STREETS around Canterbury University could have speed limits lowered. The city council is looking at reducing the limit to 30km/h along parts of the Uni-Cycle cycleway, which will include a neighbourhood greenway through Fendalton. The cycleway runs from the university through to the central city with reductions proposed for Hinau, Miro and Ngahere Sts. The lowered limit is to allow for a safe shared space between bicycles and vehicles. The speed limit would also be supported by the design which includes various traffic calming measures to further encourage slower speeds. •Turn to page 3

Rico Syme, who made his UC Championship debut from the bench helped seal a late win over St Andrew’s with a brilliant piece of footwork and acceleration. The school posted an equally sharply taken photo opportunity on its Facebook site (see page 1) of the moment Syme started his 50m run which enabled his team to draw level and give first-five Alex Harford an easy conversion to win the match. The UC Championship is an amazing breeding ground for young rugby talent and no doubt Syme’s debut will put a little bit of pressure on the CBHS incumbent. That of course is no bad thing whatever the sporting code is. – Barry Clarke

Lower speed limit plan •From page 1 At the last city council meeting ViaStrada senior traffic engineer and transport planner Glen Koorey said they should consider lowering speed limits across the city. The former Canterbury University transport engineering senior lecturer said the changes would improve motorist, cyclist and pedestrian safety. “There’s a lot of crashes where the Glen Koorey likelihood or the severity could have been reduced greatly if you got the speeds down. We know from the evidence that you drop the speeds from 50km/h to 40km/h, 40km/h to 30km/h, the risk of serious injury or fatality goes down dramatically.” Dr Koorey said in Hamilton, speed limits in school zones had been reduced. He said that could be done here. •Residents can make submissions opposing or supporting the limit changes on the city council’s website

In Brief SPORTS FIELD WORK BEHIND SCHEDULE Work re-turfing sports fields at Tulett Park, Casebrook, is six weeks behind schedule. For four weeks contractors couldn’t get a power or water supply and a further two weeks were lost due to poor weather. Physical work on the park has been completed, but while the grass is re-grown, it will not be ready for sports teams until the end of July. BUILDING DEMOLITION The city council is seeking tenders for the demolition of 122 Caledonian Rd, St Albans. The property will become the site of the new car park for the St Albans Community Centre. THIRD LANE FEEDBACK Public feedback is being sought on plans to construct a third lane on the Northern Motorway. The Papanui-Innes Community Board expressed concern about the extra lane’s impact on traffic through Belfast, Northcote, Casebrook, Papanui and St Albans. The extra lane has been proposed as a way to deal with the congestion problems on the motorway for commuters from North Canterbury. The public can make a submission on the Ecan website until July 13.

Your Local Views Bullying on the rise Ilam Labour candidate Anthony Rimell writes about bullying in schools, particularly in the north-west Bullying in our schools has hit the headlines lately, with one parent publicly protesting the bullying of his daughter at Waimairi School. Following this dramatic protest, I was contacted by other parents saying that their children had also been bullied at the school. Parents from other primary schools in the area have told me their children are being bullied too. A number of school principals have spoken up in defence of the efforts of schools to deal with bullying. For example, on June 1 the Halswell School principal described bullying as a complex issue. Many parents at Waimairi have also praised the efforts of the principal to combat bullying. The principals are right – bullying is a complex issue. And I believe they are doing all they can to combat it. But the fact is that bullying is on the rise and parents are concerned at the long-term impact

of bullying on their children. Clearly something has to be done. We cannot accept our children being harmed this way, we need to get to the root causes. And precisely because it is a complex and challenging issue, I believe it is vital that outside support be brought into our schools. That’s why I believe we must place a mental health team in every school – regardless of decile rating. Bullying does not happen in isolation. Something causes it – in the life of the person bullying, or in wider factors (such as the long term emotional impacts of the earthquakes). This issue and others like it, need to be addressed urgently. Our children are suffering. Our teachers are there to teach. We need to give them – and the dedicated principals battling to ensure our kids get the education they deserve – all the help they need. Specialist mental health teams in schools are a must.

News Time capsule found By Julia Evans DID YOUR family live in St Albans 150 years ago? A time capsule buried in 1920 at the St Albans Community Centre was found during its recent demolition. And now the St Albans Residents’ Association is looking for any relatives of the community centre’s founders. Previously known as the St Albans Library, the centre was founded in 1867. And a time capsule was buried on July 31, 1920, by the Mayor Henry Thacker. The existence of the 97-year-old Emma capsule, now Twaddell with the city council, wasn’t known until it was found. Residents’ association cochairwoman Emma Twaddell said they are hoping to have more input into the city council’s plans to open it and want to find relatives to make a more special celebration. However, she said the community wasn’t even aware of the

city council’s discovery until it asked to hire out the community centre. “They should have come straight to us and see how we want it to happen,” Mrs Twaddell said.

But the group is still eager to work with the city council and Papanui-Innes Community Board on the opening. At its meeting on May 19, the board recommended a function be organised at the community centre with local schools, the residents’ association and members of the St Albans Community Centre rebuild working party.

Mairehau park home to hazardous material By Julia Evans HAZARDOUS materials have been found in a Mairehau park. Asbestos fibres, old landfill material and other “unsuitable materials” were found during a city council ground investigation of Westminster Park. But while the 6ha park has several football and rugby fields, city council operations manager for neighbourhood and sports parks Al Hardy said these materials were not found near the pitches. They were found over the east side of the park around a drain, which is set to be upgraded. “There were traces found in the area of the drain, but this material will not be disturbed in the

construction process,” Mr Hardy said. The work planned includes a sports field surface and irrigation upgrade during the summer of 2018. Mr Hardy said the city council doesn’t know how long it has been there but it won’t be exposed during park upgrades. The other unsuitable material found was hard fill, such as concrete. A report to community boards by city council parks and project management team leader Rod Whearty said engineers Tonkin and Taylor completed the preliminary ground investigation along Westminster Park drain when the hazardous material was discovered.

Community centre decision THE CITY council will consider bringing the rebuild of the Shirley Community Centre forward at its meeting today. City council staff have said it could be brought forward to the 2018-2019 year from the 20212022 and 2022-2023 years to demonstrate the city council’s commitment to providing appropriate community facilities

in the area. Last year the centre was one of many city council projects that was put on the back-burner, much to the frustration of the ShirleyPapanui Community Board. The centre on Shirley Rd closed after significant damage during the February 22, 2011, earthquake and was demolished in October 2012.

By Julia Evans WHAT HAPPENS when Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack (of the beanstalk fame) and Rapunzel meet? That’s the story Papanui High School is tackling for this year’s musical production. Into the Woods, a Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine classic, is an amalgamation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Teacher and director Daniel Scowcroft called it a dark comedy. “It looks at growing up and

some of the challenges we face on the road to adulthood,” he said. “There are some hilarious moments that I have seen a hundred times and still laugh at. While you let your guard down laughing, reality quickly sets in and you will see the characters struggle with some majorly difficult events.” The central characters, the Baker and his Wife, are desperate for a child and on instruction from a witch, they go into the woods in the hope of fulfilling

their wish for a family. The subsequent adventures twist and turn on a journey of joy, love, loss and adventure. Students look forward to this biennial opportunity to experience creating a full scale musical production. By Julia Evans FOUR SELWYN House pupils have won boasting rights and two rather large trophies in an international problem-solving competition. Year 8s Emma Cawood, Emily Cox, Hermione Murden and Hannah Berrill were ranked second and fourth in the world in two categories of the Future Problem-Solving International competition. Their middle grade second spot was for the “presentation of an action plan” category, which involved presenting an action plan to judges about a global issue. Teams were given a roll of tape, pens and pencils, coloured paper, pipe cleaners, a magazine, paper towels, tin foil and a garbage bag and were asked to create a performance. They were also ranked fourth in the world for the middle grade “global issues problem-solving” booklet category, the main round of competition. Future problem-solving is an international education programme which develops creative, critical and thinking skills. Participants researched a series

of global topics and a six-step creative problem-solving process. The girls then applied their topic and creative problem-solving knowledge to address an issue presented in an imagined situation and create a booklet to solve it. They travelled to the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, United States, to compete at the start

of June and returned to school yesterday with medals and two trophies. Students and pupils from Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Portugal, Singapore, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States competed in the five-day competition between June 7-11.

Fendalton car parks stay Businesses influence final decision By Julia Evans FENDALTON business owners are relieved that parking outside their premises won’t be removed. Elizabeth Fry, owner of The Cook Shop on Holmwood Rd, said she’s thrilled the FendaltonWaimairi-Harewood Community Board did not approve a new pedestrian island that would take away six parking spaces. “We’re pleased it’s being maintained,” Mrs Fry said. If the parking was revoked, she said she would have lost her walk-in customer base. “It’ll kill us . . . the reality is it’s putting all these businesses in real danger of having to close their doors,” Mrs Fry said. But the board went against the city council’s recommendation and moved a motion to keep the intersection as it is. The board’s decision came after Mrs Fry organised a petition of 336 signatures opposing the loss of parking. Ilam MP Gerry Brownlee,

board chairman David Cartwright and city councillor Jamie Gough also met with Mrs Fry in May to address concerns raised by the petition. Said board deputy chairman Sam MacDonald: “This is one of those things that gets the council in trouble. It costs ratepayers money that could be spent somewhere else. It doesn’t appease the residents and it is imposing something unnecessarily,” he said. “We’re really focused on the council spending money where it should be spending and this was one of those examples where it

wasn’t. We didn’t feel it was being spent in the right way.” The board queried why the work had been prioritised over the Harewood, Gardiners and Breens Rds intersection. “If we’re going to be spending nearly $100,000, we should be spending it in a community that actually wants it,” Mr MacDonald said. Residents Roy Bickerstaffe and Stuart Gowland made deputations to the board and said they did not want the P10 parking spaces outside their properties further down Holmwood Rd.

EVEN WITH more than 76,000 members worldwide, many people haven’t heard of this group. But recently the Soroptimist International of Christchurch celebrated the long service members over the last 68 years. Special recognition was given to Maureen Lough, who was president of the club during the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Certificates were presented to those who had given over 10 and 20 years of service. And certificates, badges and a bouquet flowers presented to the four members whose combined service topped 327 years. The Soroptimist’s have supported groups such as Riding for the Disabled,

the Westburn School Music Scholarship, the women’s shelter at the Christchurch City Mission, Bellyful and Girl Guides since 1949. Mrs Flitcroft said the group is currently working on a knitting project for Plunket and another project weaving bedrolls out of recycled plastic bags. Cotwold pupils get on their bikes with $15,000 grant By Julia Evans THE BIKES in Schools programme is one step closer to being run from Cotswold Primary School. The Fendalton-WaimairiHarewood Community Board has earmarked $15,000 to go towards the programme at the Bishopdale school. The aim is to provide children with easy access to bicycles. The school is looking to purchase a fleet of more than 50 bicycles of four different sizes and helmets. They will also build a bike track around the school field and a storage facility. Of the $72,000 needed, the school has raised $56,000

already. The board’s contribution pushes that to $71,000. The track will be open to 500 Cotswold pupils during the school day and to the community after school hours and on weekends. Local sports clubs, preschools and kindergartens will also have access to the track. Board deputy chairman Sam MacDonald said the it was fully behind the programme. Mr MacDonald said the best part of the plan was that it would benefit the wider community as well as the school. “The thing is with the city council giving away money like that is it should

be beneficial for the whole community,” he said. The school also plans to hold duathlons and bicycle races. More than 65 schools across the country have worked with the Bikes in Schools Charitable Trust to implement the programme. However, Cotswold will become only the second school in the city to run it, alongside Rawhiti School in North New Brighton. Medbury’s fundraiser for Syria PUPILS FROM Medbury School went running to raise money for Syria. As part of the school’s community service programme, the pupils ran a 12-hour fundraising initiative last week to support the World Vision 40 Hour Famine. Modelled on the Relay for Life,

the walk went from 6am until 6pm and raised $22,000 to help support the refugee crisis in Syria. All year 1 to 8 pupils, together with staff members, participated in the event. Friends and family were invited to participate and the pupils

were also encouraged to walk or run outside of school hours. Amos Pilgrim, Medbury’s head of community service, with the support of the four year 8 house leaders, Alexander Speight, Jasper Johnson, William Law and Ben Kuruvilla, organised the fundraiser.

As physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk explains, when our muscles tighten this can refer pain to many of the areas around the face and head. Dehydration can be the catalyst for tightening the neck muscle (SCM), which causes pain in the

ear, forehead and around the eye and jaw joint areas. Tightening of the temporalis muscle can refer pain to the teeth, which can be confusing when the person visits the dentist to have it checked and the dentist can’t find a reason for the recurring pain. Teeth grinding at night and teeth clenching during the day, are also a major cause of muscle tightening. Physiotherapy treatment for these problems, is based on deactivating

the ‘trigger points’ through handson massage therapy, to relax the muscles, which is the least invasive and a very effective form of treatment. Dry needling is another technique used for muscle relaxation, but is only used with the client’s consent, Ietje says. “We release the muscles to give immediate relief and at the same time work on the cause. For example, we have a feedback headband that is worn at night to help people to learn not to clench their teeth while they’re asleep. We also work

on the client’s cervical or neck part of the spine, where overuse can cause muscles to tighten, creating pain.” Teaching self-management of stress is an important aspect of the clinic’s treatment, as well as teaching breathing techniques, which go hand in hand with managing stress. The gym is open to the public for regular specialised classes for people with ailments such as diabetes, osteoporosis, vascular problems, and those who face difficulties following a stroke.

SPORTS Gymnast’s debut on world stage has her wanting more North-west teams put

By Andrew King IN ONLY her first outing at an international tournament, Strowan gymnast Brooke Teear finished sixth in the trampoline – and the buzz of it has left her wanting more. The 14-year-old competed in Melbourne at the Australian gymnastic nationals recently, and said she was happy with the way she performed. “It was my first time representing New Zealand in the junior international 15-plus age group. I competed well and I am happy with my result,” she said. Now she wants to experience more competitions. “I am now working towards making the New Zealand team who are travelling to Bulgaria for the world age group championships,” she said. The team travels to Europe in November. For that to happen, she said she will have to work on a couple of things. “I am currently working on my landing. As I need to make sure I am landing more accurate in the red zone to get no deductions in points,” she said.

Directions

Combine flour with salt in large mixing bowl. Cut in butter with pastry blender or two knives until mixture is size of small peas. Stir in just enough cold water to form a dough. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 200 deg C. Grease four (11cm) individual tart pans or a larger pan. Divide dough into four portions and press onto bottom and up sides of prepared pans. Line with

Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,

hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

Any activities they have done as a family, they can continue to do here.” For example, the village put on a Mother’s Day lunch, with the families joining in, she says. Residents are given a monthly calendar with all the upcoming activities. Activities include the exclusive Ryman Triple A exercise programme, which is tailored for residents’ differing levels of health and mobility. There is also housie, knitting groups, happy hours, movies, and more, so all interests are catered for. They also have their own ‘Ryman Delicious’ menus. The winter menus are full of hearty, warming food for the cooler season. Every six months, there is a relatives’ meeting for each area of the Ngaio Marsh Village, attended by the team of management and activity coordinators, at which the families get to know the staff and are updated on any future plans. The Ngaio Marsh Retirement Village in Papanui has a wonderful team of dedicated people, all of whom ensure that residents receive the care they require as their needs change. A key member of that team is Clinical Manager Jesney Johney. Coming to New Zealand with extensive post-graduate nursing experience in her home country of India and in the United Kingdom, where she worked as a senior caregiver in a dementia unit, Jesney joined Ngaio Marsh three and a half years ago as a Registered Nurse. This was after completing a cap course to gain New Zealand qualifications and also gaining a National Certificate in Infection Control. After two years she was promoted to the position of Hospital Co-ordinator and a year later was again promoted to Clinical Manager, a role in which she is responsible for 155 residents and 159 staff at Ngaio Marsh. “Jesney has a strong medical, surgical and aged care background and we are delighted to have her as the Clinical Manager at Ngaio Marsh,” Village Manager Anna Thomson says. Jesney says she has loved being at the village right from the start, and was warmly welcomed by the whole team when she arrived. “I didn’t know anyone in Christchurch so for the first two weeks I stayed in a serviced apartment here until I found accommodation.” For Jesney, working with the residents at Ngaio Marsh is both enjoyable and satisfying. “Elderly people are the community’s most vulnerable and they need support and help. For me it’s inspiring to help and support them. I love all of them,” she says. “Jesney is also very good at working with the residents’ families,” Anna says. “She has a unique way of communicating with residents and their relatives. She has a calm nature and is very good with helping residents settle in.” A new app, myRyman Care, which is due to be rolled out in August, will not only see paper files disappear, but will also revolutionise the way the team works at Ngaio Marsh, Anna says. Jesney agrees. “There will be a tablet in every room with all the information about the daily care of the resident. There will be different levels of access – for residents, and

Choosing the right heat pump for your home

Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit, most homes include at least one heat pump, if not a whole heating solution. They can provide cheap, clean heat and are much more convenient than a log burner as you just need to press a button. But how do you decide what is best? Choosing the right sized heat pump is key to ensuring optimum comfort levels. Every situation varies and it is therefore important to get professional advice from heat pump experts. The range varies from wall mounted high walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems, ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted central heating systems allowing you to have a very discreet way of heating your whole home to a constant temperature throughout. Firstly, you must select a heat pump that is suitable for the size of the space you wish to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area taken into consideration but also, insulation, building orientation, windows and ceiling space. Secondly, the location of your heat pump is also extremely important. The cheapest installation is a back to back where the outdoor unit is positioned directly behind the indoor unit however this is not necessarily always the best option. It is vital that the indoor unit is positioned in a place that will not be

constantly blowing on you. Also important, is the location of the outdoor unit. Most people do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly in their outdoor entertaining area or right outside their bedroom window. Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands have come and gone over the years but there are a number of manufacturers who provide reputable and reliable products. All brands vary in their energy efficiency, quietness of systems and price, so it depends on your application as to which will be most suitable. The facts about home ventilation Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. Traditional domestic ventilation systems are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from outside via the roof space and force the stale air out through gaps around windows and doors. The incoming air from these systems has to be heated or cooled to keep the house warm in winter or cool in summer. The Smooth-Air HEX390 is a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It extracts air from the house and at the same time brings in fresh air. These two streams of air pass through a heat exchanger, which warms incoming air in winter and cools in summer if air conditioning is being used. MULTI-talented New Zealand based singer, songwriter, guitarist and vocal coach, Stuart Clarke headlines alongside well known tribute star Paul Madsen in a Superstar Show at the Hornby WMC this Friday (23rd June). Presented by Madsen Promotions, the Superstar Show features Paul performing superstar tributes to the BeeGees, Eagles, Queen and Neil Diamond with Stuart completing the superstar lineup with Johnny Cash classics. Stuart has been involved in the New Zealand music scene for more than 20 years. During this time public performances have included Auckland’s Christmas in the Park (TV3), Tauranga Jazz Festival, Clevedon Jazz

Festival, Auckland Sky City Casino, and Rhythm and Vines. He has shared the stage with many national and international acts such as Trinity Roots, The Black Seeds, Hollie Smith, John Butler Trio, and Donovan Frankenwreiter. He has been nominated for a B-Net Music Award, as well as recording collaborations released on Warners Music. Blessed with a wonderfully rich bassbaritone voice comparable to Johnny Cash, Stuart performs the music of Johnny Cash to perfection. The Superstar Show takes place at the Hornby WMC this Friday 23 June 2017. Show starts at 8pm. Tickets $20 on sale at the club office, Carmen Rd, phone 349 9026.
