Oldest collegian flew secret war missions „„ By Julia Evans AT 101-YEARS-OLD, Naylor Hillary will be the oldest collegian at the St Andrew’s centenary this weekend. Like many of the college’s 14,000 previous students, he has had an interesting past. Mr Hillary is one of the last living veterans of the Royal Air Force’s Tempsford 138 Special Duties Squadron, which he was a navigator for in World War 2. THe squadron specialised in dropping resistance fighters and their supplies behind enemy lines in a Mk IV Short Stirling. Its existence was so classified, it wasn’t

even acknowledged until 1989, and the full story has still not come to light. At the end of last year Mr Hillary was awarded the French Legion d’Honneur medal (right) by the French ambassador for his services. He doesn’t talk about it much – life is a lot quieter for him now. He reads the paper each morning, takes long walks and goes to church every Sunday without fail. THere’s an All Blacks jersey hanging on his wall signed by Richie McCaw. Mr Hillary’s grandson organised it for his 100th birthday. He was chuffed, he watches the rugby whenever it’s on. But Mr Hillary said his career really began when he started attending St Andrew’s in 1929. “I had three older sisters so mum and dad packed me off to board at St Andrew’s to toughen me up,â€? he said. THe cold showers, morning runs around the school paddock and open air sleeping quarters did the trick, he said. •Turn to page 4
