BISHOPDALE History behind the event The idea to hold the festival was the result of a Community Conversation, hosted by the Fendalton/Waimairi Community Board in 2012. This meeting was a chance for residents and community groups to meet together to share ideas and goals for their community. The people spoke about wanting some fun days, focused on family and community events, where neighbours could meet neighbours and all families, no matter their size, culture or circumstance could meet together to celebrate their area. Together the Christchurch City Council staff work closely with the Bishopdale Community Trust to plan and deliver the now annual event to the Bishopdale area. The Bishopdale Community Trust are dedicated to the enhancement and support for the Bishopdale community and welcome visitors at their community centre located at the Sundbye House, 100 Farrington Ave. At the community centre they offer a wide range of services and events to the neighbourhood, with a special emphasis on activities for families and seniors.

History behind the neighbourhood The suburb is named after the three Bishop brothers, James (1826–1910), Robert (1827–1909) and William (1829– 1903), who bought land in the area in 1858 or 1859 and established pipfruit orchards. Initially, the area was called Bishopsdale, but the second ‘s’ was dropped from the name. Part of Greers Road (the section between Harewood Road and Sawyers
Arms Road) was formerly called Bishop’s Road. It was renamed in 1948 to avoid confusion with Bishops Road in Papanui and Bishop Street in St Albans. Area Total - 0.9531 km (0.3680 sq mi) Population (2013) - 2,424 Density - 2,500/km (6,600/sq/mi)
