1080 factory gets green light

A controversial 1080 factory in Rolleston has been given the go ahead, much to the consternation of residents who opposed it. Pest Control Research has been approved for non-notified resource consent to build the factory in the Izone business park by the district council, after independent commissioner Michael Chrystal ruled the effects would be less than minor. However, Mr Chrystal’s assessment has failed to satisfy 1080 Free Rolleston, a residents group which gathered almost 2500 signatures for a petition in opposition to the factory. “I guessed that this would be the likely outcome because the New Zealand Government is ultimately behind 1080 approvals. It’s all about money, and has nothing to do with what the people want,” he said. “I pray to God nobody gets poisoned.” Mr Chrystal was satisfied that measures proposed by Pest Control Research to control the handling, manufacture and storage of hazardous substances and address other security concerns meant the effects for the public would be less than minor. He noted that the site was 400m away from the nearest residential land. Mr Evans was worried that the factory’s presence would affect Rolleston property values. “Now we apparently have a 1080 plant in Rolleston, regardless whether or not we want one. I hope the investors lose their entire investment, lock, stock, and barrel.” Pest Control Research managing director Malcolm Thomas declined to comment.

COMPLEX CREATIONS: West Melton brothers Joshua, 15, and Johan, 13, Esterhuizen will put their years of experience with Lego to good use when they take part in an international robotics competition in the United States, in two weeks time. The brothers will be representing New Zealand in the First Lego League Razorback Invitational Tournament in Arkansas, from May 14-17. They earned the right to do so by taking home one of three champion’s awards at a FFL tournament held in Auckland last year. The competition will involve more than 15 countries and also many teams from the US. There are three parts to the competition, which involves building and programming an autonomous robot, researching a science project based around modern-day learning and teamwork. Joshua and Johan’s mother Angelique said both boys enjoyed robotics. “Their age difference causes them to engage with robots in different ways and their different ways of thinking has served them well in coming up with good ideas and design choices for their First Lego League endeavours.”

Rules to address Not another ponytail John! water quality rubber-stamped BY TOM DOUDNEY New rules to turn around Selwyn’s declining water quality and quantity have been passed with few changes, in spite of earlier criticisms from farmers who feared the limits set were too harsh. Variation 1 of the Land and Water Regional Plan was accepted by Environment Canterbury (ECan) on Thursday. The variation introduces new policies, rules, and limits to manage water quality and water quantity in the Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere catchment, with emphasis on the long-term health of Te Waihora. Federated Farmers North Canterbury dairy chairman Cameron Henderson said nutrient limits proposed in the draft version of the variation hadn’t changed but that had been expected and farmers were “coming to terms” with them. “From what we can see it’s going to cost farming to probably achieve that target. We are not sure how much yet but a lower target would have been more achievable, certainly.” Commissioner Peter Skelton said reaching this point represented a significant milestone towards addressing the serious issues in one of

the most challenging catchments in the country. “Continuous improvement will be needed over time, so a programme of action will be developed to implement the solutions package over the next 20 years.” Professor Skelton said it was especially gratifying to see the significance to Ngāi Tahu of Te Waihora/ Lake Ellesmere and its margins being recognised in Variation 1. “The identification of a Cultural Values Management Area means consent applications in this area will specifically need to take into account Ngāi Tahu values,” he said. Variation 1 introduces catchment limits for losses of nitrogen from farming activities and point source discharges – community sewage and industrial processing activities. It sets limits on abstraction from surface water and groundwater in the zone, and minimum flows on rivers and streams. It also seeks to reduce allocation from ground water over time, and new takes are prohibited. Variation 1 provides the first subregional section in the proposed Land & Water Regional Plan to be fully developed. The Variation will be subject to an appeal period of 15 working days but is already legally in effect.

Water and walnuts worth Frank Brenmuhl recently became the new Federated Farmers North Canterbury provincial president. He spoke to reporter Tom Doudney about his walnut farm, why he has two titanium knees and the pub fight that broke up his band. How long were you farming on the West Coast for and what sort of farming were you doing over there? We started dairy farming on the West Coast in 1984. We kept the farms on the West Coast and moved to Canterbury in 1996 and had share milkers on the home farms. That was when we bought our property with the walnuts and we sold out of the dairy farms around 2003 or 2004. And of course the place in Canterbury you moved to was Aylesbury. What was the reason for the move? We had been farming cows for

quite a while. I had a car accident and my knees were playing up so spending a long time in the shed milking cows wasn’t doing them any good. It was a lifestyle choice. Can you tell me about the car accident? I had a driver pull out who effectively went through a stop sign and into the side of my van and I ended up crashed into a power pole with a broken hip and damage to both knees. That must have been pretty scary. Yeah, I now have two titanium knees. You have got one of New Zealand’s largest walnut orchards with more than 4500 trees, I understand. Is that your whole business or do you do other types of farming as well? I did farm advisory work for about 15 years and stopped doing that about five years ago. That was kind of an unexpected role to get into. And of course I was flat out with Federated Farmers National for a while [as dairy chairman]. What is running a walnut farm like? Do you get a busy period during the harvest? Yes, right now! Then is the rest of the year a bit

In town they don’t pay for all the pumping costs of all the infrastructure to get their water to them – or they do but as a collective with the council paying on their behalf.

getting worked up over Would it be fair to say that you feel there are a lot of urban people, or perhaps environmentalists, making comments who don’t necessarily have a good understanding of the situation with water and farming? I think we are having too many debates that are ideologically driven without much substance in terms of having a good background in understanding what affects the demand we are having – 98 per cent of the water still goes out to sea and so what we are talking about here is agriculture taking about two per cent of water, and that is ‘available’ water if anyone wants to talk about ecological low flows. It’s an ideological thing instead of looking at the facts and saying ‘what are the consequences of the decisions that I am insisting that other people make.’ You seem like someone who is not afraid to be outspoken, is that something that has served you well over the years or has it got you in trouble? I tend to be reasonably circumspect in what I say but if a spade needs calling a spade I’m going to call it a spade. I have always believed that the best form of communication is one that is straight up and honest and people understand where I am coming from. I was sitting down doing the wages in the painting business and I said to my wife, ‘I am paying my staff more than I am earning. Why am I doing this?’ And I just decided on a career change. My dad was a watch maker and he believed that you couldn’t start with nothing and end up owning a farm. There are many of us who have done that in the dairy industry. My first job was working on a farm at Masterton so I started at the bottom and worked my way through. It was possible then and it’s still possible today. There are people doing it every day. I was at the Dairy Industry Awards Trust provincial awards night the other week and it was really good to see the young people still continuing to move through the industry and make great strides. Was it daunting to begin with, trying it make it as a farmer after you gave up the other business? I had a plan. I had contact with a Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry farm adviser Tom Sewell. I used to teach his daughter guitar. I was talking to Tom and he said it was possible to start with nothing and end up owning a farm. The advice he gave was this: Farm work for two years, farm manager for one year, share milker for two years, and then a ballot farm on the West Coast of the South Island. Have you played any sports? Not since college really. Actually I spent more time playing in bands

in pubs than I did on the sports field. What instrument did you play? I played guitar and sang. What sort of songs did you play? Anything that was in the top 10. We used to learn three new songs a week. What made you give that up? There was a massive fight in the pub one day. We were a resident band playing Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. We had done that for 18 months and then there was a big stoush in the place and about 30 or 40 people got beaten up so the bar manager said ‘that’s it, no more bands.’ Then I went farming and had no time to play. What pub was that? That was the New Levin Hotel in Levin. Since you stopped playing in bands do you ever break out the guitar and sing, at a social gathering for example? I haven’t done so for quite a few years now. What you’re not busy with the farm, what are some of your other interests? I have been Amy Adams’ electorate chairman for the last three years and really it has just been that and looking after the orchard here, really. Amy has obviously done quite well here, has that been good working for her? It has. We are very lucky to have someone of Amy’s calibre here in Selwyn.

New Rolleston school going ahead BY TOM DOUDNEY The latest new school to be announced for Rolleston has been given the thumbs up by the community. The Government recently broke the news as part of pre-budget announcement which included a total of $244 million to be invested in new schools, school expansions and additional classrooms around New Zealand. The school will have a roll capacity of 750 children for years 1 to 8, and is forecast to open in January 2017. Rolleston Residents Association

chairwoman Lynley Shaw said the new school was great news. “It’s good to see that they are noticing the growth and they are getting prepared,” she said. Rolleston School principal Andrew Morrall said the announcement was outstanding news and anything which helped cater to the growing number of school age children in town was good. “We have got 765 [pupils] at the moment which is about 40 odd [pupils] up on this time last year,” Mr Morrall said. “The trend is there and I don’t expect it to change.”

Rolleston already has Rolleston School, Clearview Primary and Rolleston Christian School, while West Rolleston Primary will open next year and the high school, Rolleston College, will also open in 2017. Mrs Shaw said the focus now needed to go on making sure the social facilities were in place to cater for the needs of the youth population. “Rolleston is a great place for bringing up young families. “We have got the aquatic centre and we have got the skate park but you visit those places and they are being highly used by teenagers.”

Celebrating those who died in World War 1 With SelWyn librarieS www.selwynlibrary.co.nz

Many of fallen soldiers’ World War 1 claimed the lives of about 18,000 New Zealand soldiers, while a further 41,000 were injured or fell ill. To honour those from Selwyn, a project was undertaken by Selwyn Libraries to identify, research and record every soldier whose name was recorded on a World War 1 memorial in the district. To mark the centenary of the conflict, the Selwyn Times continues its weekly series, Soldiers of Selwyn. • Private Samuel Davis Weastell Samuel David Weastell was born on June 13, 1887, at Glentunnel, to George and Eliza Weastell. Before enlisting, on May 31, 1916, he was a shop assistant for his brother, Joseph, in the store at Glentunnel. His brothers ,Walter and Marmaduke, also served in the war. Weastell was assigned to the Canterbury Infantry. He arrived in Devonport, England, on November 18, marching into Sling Camp on the same day. He must have found the sights of England interesting for on December 10 he was AWOL for a couple of hours in Salisbury and was given 72 hours’ detention. He left for France with the Reserve group on January 7, 1917. Weastell was posted to 1st Battalion in the field and later killed in action on June 1, 1917, aged 32. The New Zealand Division was involved in preparations for the Battle of Messines. He was buried at La Plus Douve Farm Cemetery, Belgium, and is remembered on the Malvern County and South Malvern war memorials.

• Sergeant Frederick Dutson Moss Frederick Dutson Moss was born on April 11, 1879, to William Alfred and Mary Ann Moss. He is recorded on the 1911 electoral roll as a farm labourer at Hororata. However, he obviously had an inventive mind for in November of 1912, he applied for an American patent for a new handle fastening method. At the time of his enlistment he was a farm manager for the Remount Department. The War Office had requested the New Zealand Government to send two veterinary mobile sections and two veterinary hospital sections to Egypt. Suitable men were selected for the various duties which were to be done under veterinary officers, and were trained at a remount depot, which was established at Upper Hutt. Moss enlisted on November 10, 1914, and was assigned to the New Zealand Veterinary Corps, the No 2 Mobile Vet Section. He was promoted to sergeant on December 1 shortly before embarking with the Second Reinforcements for Suez, Egypt. He was attached to No 1 Australian Light Horse Brigade at Zeitoun on January 1, 1916. It was reported that he took a chill which led to a fatal illness.

He had taken part in some very arduous operations, and was for two months almost continuously in the saddle. He died on November 27, 1916, of pancreatitis and heart failure. Moss was buried in the Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt, and is remembered on the Hororata War Memorial, although his initials are given as F. G. • Private Richard John Locker - 21702 Richard John Locker was born on November 27, 1889, at Greendale, to Richard John and Mary Locker. Locker was working as a farm labourer at Hororata before enlisting on May 2, 1916. He was assigned to the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 16th Reinforcements and promoted to company cook on May 4. He embarked on August 21 for Devonport and was sent to France on November 15. He seems to have continued as cook because on December 19 he was charged with the loss by neglect of one spoon and had to pay 4p for the cost of replacement. Locker was sent to hospital on April 10, 1917, with mumps and discharged 10 days later. He died on June 7, 1917, at Messines, with the 2nd Company, 2nd Battalion Canterbury Infantry. They had been under canvas at Canteen Corner before moving to the Auckland trench during the evening of June 6. Zero hour was 3.10am and they duly advanced across no-man’s-land. At some stage, Locker was killed in action, his body either unrecovered or unidentified.

His name is on the Messines Ridge Memorial to the Missing, as well as the Malvern County and Hororata war memorials. • Rifleman Alfred Arthur Jonathan Boyce – 24/695 Alfred Arthur Jonathan Boyce was born on February 16, 1895, to Frederick and Mary Elizabeth Boyce. Boyce was working as an engine driver at Aylesbury before enlisting on May 28, 1915. He had previous military experience having served with the Mounted Rifles, the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry. After having surgery for varicose viens, he left for Suez with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade on October 9, 1915. Boyce suffered an acute bout of appendicitis in March 1916 and was hospitalised in the General Hospital in Cairo. He recovered and was discharged on April 17 and attached to the training battalion. A month later, he was transferred to France and the Western Front where he fought through the Somme battles. On February 25, 1917, he was promoted to Lance Corporal. Boyce was killed in action on June 7, 1917, during the Battle for Messines, where more than 700 soldiers were killed in four days of fighting. His body was not found or identified. His name is recorded on the Messines Ridge Memorial to the Missing and the Malvern County War Memorial. • Private Ernest Joseph Carter Ernest Joseph Carter was born in London on June 22, 1887, to Dr Howard B and Kate E. Carter. Carter was working as a labourer at Greenpark before enlisting on December 15, 1915. He was assigned to the 12th Reinforcements of the Canterbury

Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal on March 10, 1916, and transferred to the machine gun detachment a month later. He embarked for Suez on May 1, 1916. After a month, he left for Southampton. He marched into Sling Camp on August 9 by which time had reverted to the rank of Private. On September 18, Carter was posted to the Machine Gun depot at Grantham and proceeded overseas with them on October 31. He was killed in action on June 7, aged 29, during the battle for Messines. His company had been detailed to advance with the 1st Brigade. Carter is buried in Wulverghem-Lindenhoek Rd Military Cemetery, Belgium, and remembered on the Greenpark War Memorial. • Private George Henry Cross George Henry Cross was born at Greenpark on July 31, 1893, to John and Grace Cross. He had previous military experience serving with the 13th Territorial Regiment. He was farming at Weedons before enlisting with his brother, Hubert Ellesmere, on April 4, 1916. They were assigned to the 15th Reinforcements, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, and embarked for Devonport on July 26, 1916. In October, they were sent to France. On March 12, 1917, Cross was admitted to hospital with scabies, a common complaint of the time. He was sent on to Northumbrian Casualty Clearing Station for

bodies never recovered Casualty Clearing Station for treatment. Cross re-joined his battalion on March 23 and was killed in action on June 7, 1917, aged 24. Hubert Ellesmere was wounded severely by a shell on the same day. He suffered a gunshot wound and compound fracture to his left arm but, after treatment, returned to New Zealand. Cross’ body was not recovered or identified and his name is recorded on the Messines Ridge Memorial to the Missing and the Springston War Memorial. He is also remembered on the family gravestone in Bromley Cemetery, Christchurch. • Rifleman Samuel John Gudsell Samuel was born on March 16, 1884, to James and Annie Gudsell. He married Mabel Huston at Tinwald on April 13, 1905, and by the time he enlisted, they had three children, Samuel John, Mabel Annie, and Arthur Albert. Gudsell had worked as a general storekeeper and farm labourer before buying his own farm at Dunsandel. He sold the farm to enlist. In his spare time he played for the Dunsandel Cricket Club. Gudsell enlisted on May 8, 1916, and was assigned to the 16th Reinforcements. He embarked for Devonport on August 19. He was sent to France on November 15. A month later he was posted to the 4th Battalion Rifle Brigade, B Company and joined them in the field. Gudsell was absent without leave from April 13-6, 1917, when the Rifle Brigade spent a fortnight of intensive training in the Tilques area. This was the second time he had been AWOL and he then experienced the harsh discipline of the army. He was tried and sentenced to

28 days of the humiliating field punishment number two. This consisted of the convicted man being shackled in irons for up to two hours a day, although unlike Field punishment No 1, he was not secured to a stationary object. While undergoing this punishment he absconded on May 10 but gave himself up two days later. He was given another 30 days of field punishment number two as a result. However, Gudsell was killed in action on June 7, 1917, aged 34, during the first day of the battle for Messines. The 4th Battalion was tasked with the capture of the village together with the trenches running round its eastern outskirts and to the north and south. Gudsell’s unit, were to pass through Messines and attempt to secure the trenches beyond. Even though he had been killed in action, the army was not to be thwarted, so his pay was docked to make up for his uncompleted punishment. Although his burial was reported on June 31, his body was not found or identified and his name is inscribed on the Messines Ridge Memorial to the Missing, as well as the Dunsandel and Ashburton war memorials. • Sergeant Alexander Peter McRae Alexander Peter McRae was born on February 9, 1890, to William and Margaret Gordon McRae. He was head teacher at Lakeside School and had previous military experience with the Officers Training Corp at Canterbury College.

McRae enlisted on October 13, 1915, and was assigned to the Rifle Brigade, 3rd Battalion. He embarked for Suez on February 5, 1916 and then, in April, was sent to France. He was promoted temporarily to Sergeant on October 16 and the promotion was confirmed on March 7, 1917. McRae was killed in action on June 7, 1917, aged 27, during the battle for Messines. He was buried near where he fell and although directions to his grave were recorded, his body was not found or identified. His name is on the Messines Ridge Memorial to the Missing, as well as the Leeston plaque of the Ellesmere County War Memorial and the Ashburton War Memorial. • Rifleman Cordiner Newlove Cordiner Newlove was born on February 4, 1887, at Dunsandel, to Mark Henry and Margaret Newlove. For many years he worked on his father’s farm in Southland. He also owned a team and did contract work in the Rakaia and Methven areas. Two years before enlistment he bought a farm at Lauriston which he would sell for the purpose of joining the 16 Reinforcements. He was notable locally for his height, as it was reported that he stood 6ft 2in in his stockings. Newlove enlisted on May 3, 1916, and was assigned to the Rifle Brigade, 7th Reinforcements. He embarked for England on August 20 and, after arrival, left for France on November 15. He was posted to A Company on December 8 and killed in

action on June 7, 1917, with the 4th Battalion, aged 31, in the battle for Messines. In 1944, in a farewell speech to Newlove’s departing airman nephew, Mr Sheat referred to Rifleman Cordiner Newlove, and commented that he had been held back from serving in the trenches in the war on account of his height but had persisted in his endeavours to serve in the front line where he eventually made the supreme sacrifice. He is remembered on the Southbridge plaque of the Ellesmere County War Memorial as well as the Dunsandel and Ashburton war memorials. • Private Hursey Lawrence Rapley Hursey Lawrence was born on October 16, 1895, to Joshua and Mary Jane Rapley. He was brought up at Lakeside and before enlisting was working as a labourer. He had previous military experience having served with the 13th Regiment, North Canterbury. Lawrence enlisted on July 24, 1916, and was assigned to the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 19th Reinforcements, C Company. He was promoted to Lance Corporal at Featherstone camp on August 4. Whilte at Featherstone, he fell ill with influenza and was admitted to hospital for four days from August 17. He did not recover completely for he was also hospitalised for influenza when back at Trentham in September, this time for five days. However he was able to embark for England on November 15. On arrival, he was reduced to

the rank of Private, leaving for France on March 1. On May 25 he was attached to the 2nd Battalion, Canterbury Infantry Regiment. He was killed in action on June 7, 1917, during the battle for Messines, aged 22. He is remembered on the Ellesmere County War Memorial’s Leeston plaque and the Ashburton War Memorial. • Private John Lester Tomlinson John Lester Tomlinson was born on February 28, 1896, to Frederick and Annie Jane Tomlinson. Tomlinson had previous military experience as he was serving with the K Company Coastal Defense Unit. He was farming for his father at St Albans before enlisting on May 31, 1916, and being assigned to 17th Reinforcements, J Company. He embarked for Devonport on September 25 and left England for France on December 8. Tomlinson joined the 2nd Battalion Otago Regiment in the field on January 7, 1917, and was posted to the 14th Company. He fought with them for the next five months but was killed in action, aged 24, on June 7, the first day of the Battle of Messines. He is buried in the Messines Ridge British Cemetery and remembered on the Lincoln Roll of Honour. ▌READERS’ ▌ LETTERS • In response to the article Trucks prompt safety concerns in April 14 issue, I would like to remind drivers that there should not be two vehicles (trucks or cars) passing a cyclist on a narrow road. It is not just a nicety, but a requirement in the road code to “wait for a clear space before passing a cyclist on a narrow road.” This is one of several rules in a section of the road code devoted to sharing the road with a range of other users and it is also a regular advertising theme. The Selwyn district contains an extensive network of roads – nearly 2500km – that carry a wide range of people and vehicles at any time. They are all entitled to be there, even if not every carriageway has been designed to allow for level of traffic it is currently carrying. The only solution in the short term and the cheapest in the long term is for every road user to show respect and courtesy to other users and please share the road. – Sarah Walters, deputy mayor • I fear Colin Knaggs of NZ Transport Agency fails to grasp the point of Steve Young’s letter in the April 21 edition of your esteemed newspaper. flashing, someone can approach the intersection from Buchanans Rd, note the 100km/h signs just prior, turn left or right onto State Highway 73, immediately accelerate to 100km/h and hence risk a ticket for exceeding 70km/h, even though they were never notified of the temporary speed limit reduction. Logic would suggest that since the lights flash whenever a vehicle approaches the intersection from Buchanans Rd, there should be permanent 70km/h signs on

• It is not surprising that the Remuneration Authority has recommended increases out of line with inflation and well above the average (Pay increases proposed for mayor, councillors, Selwyn Times April 21). I do not recall the authority ever doing anything different. What does surprise me is the deputy mayor saying councillors are not paid enough. Perhaps the solution to this is that the mayor and his deputy refuse the increases and ask that the

It is quite sad that the higher the salary paid, the higher the percentage increase granted with the end result being an ever growing income gap. Bridge club celebrates 40th

The Lincoln Bridge Club’s two longest standing members Ans Kraak and Francis Fox cut the cake as the club marked its 40th anniversary. The club’s inaugural committee meeting was held on March 16, 1975. Originally part of the Ellesmere Country Club, it later moved to the old Lincoln Community Centre, and more recently to the Lincoln Event Centre when it opened in 2011. The club has a membership of about 50, with members coming from Leeston, Rolleston, Prebbleton and Halswell, as well as more locally in and around Lincoln. The anniversary was attended by 44 members.

Mrs Kraak is the only original member still with the club and she gave some reminiscences of the last 40 years. She has served on the committee for many years, was president from 1991 to 1999 and on her retirement from that role was elected a patron. She has donated a cup for the winners of the annual pairs competition in memory of her late husband, Hubert Kraak. The first winners of the Hubert Kraak Cup were Jenny and Peter Story. The club plays duplicate bridge on Monday afternoon and Thursday night. Beginners’ classes are held on Tuesday nights. New members are welcome

Selwyn Community Board news The Board recently held its first away meeting at the West Melton Community Hall and representatives of the local community committees were in attendance. Members were asked about the proposed underpass at West Melton and questions were asked about graveyard repairs following on from the earthquakes. Following on from the meeting, the public were invited to share a meal with the members. The Board has recently allocated a number of grants. One of the grants was to Scout members to attend the Australian Jamboree at the end of 2015. Funding was granted to an individual towards costs of attending the Interprovincial Athletics Competition at Easter. Another individual was granted funds to attend the World Archery event in Arizona in April and a further grant was made to an individual who is currently participating in the World Challenge Nepal Expedition in Nepal. The ANZAC Poppy project that the Board is facilitating has been distributed to the local primary schools and Day Club. The Board will hold its bi-annual Volunteer Awards on 17 June 2015 during the week of the Volunteer. Nominations are now open and forms are available from the Council Secretary on 347 2800. If you know of anyone who is deserving of a Volunteer Award please fill out a nomination form. We would also like to let the wider Selwyn Central community know that the Community Board has grants available to support community groups and individuals. The New Zealand Transport Agency has lowered the speed limit on State Highway 73 through Springfield. The change took effect from Thursday 23 April. The Transport Agency’s Highway Manager Colin Knaggs says there has been significant development in the town during the last few years which means the previous 70km/h speed limit on the highway was no longer appropriate. The new 50km/h area begins 180m south-east of Tramway Road and runs through to 265m north-west of Pall Mall Street.

Returning to work After An injury? Whether or not the injury happened at work

• Liffey exhibition A new exhibition opening at Lincoln’s Down By The Liffey Gallery tomorrow will focus on getting on with life after the earthquakes. ‘Cracking On’, featuring the work of Maria Lee, Cecilia Freire de Mance and Alan Gunn will run until May 24. The gallery is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10am-4pm.

Some people mistakenly believe that rest and reduced activity (including time off work) will accelerate or help recovery after an injury – largely because of an historical and incorrect concept that extended bed rest and/or immobilisation helps to heal injuries, relieve pain, and recover patient function. However, evidence now clearly indicates that prolonged rest may be harmful – that it not only delays recovery and increases the risk of chronic pain, but increases the risk of adverse complications from prolonged inactivity Many people also believe that work and workplaces are dangerous for people who are temporarily impaired. But there is evidence that the contrary is true: it is healthier to be at work than at home when recovering from the effects of injury. Ideally, injured workers should remain in their preinjury roles or return to them as soon as possible. A prolonged period of incapacity may cause them to lose their jobs, making it more difficult to re-enter the workforce. Some people will need to readjust to work with a permanent impairment, while others may suffer such severe effects from their injuries that they can’t return to work at all. However, where injuries are minor and self-limiting, the effects of unemployment are likely to far outweigh the effects of the injuries themselves. In addition, the longer someone is off work, the less likely they are to return. Physiotherapy New Zealand was one of the signatories to the recent consensus statement on the health benefits of work. Physiotherapists are some of the key providers of the ACC Stay at Work programmes, working closely with the GP and employer to achieve a sustainable return to work. The role of a return to work provider is to assess the clients work situation, and in context with the nature of their injury, specialist requirements, workplace health and safety requirements and medical certification is to establish a return to work pathway that ensures a safe and sustainable return to work for the client.

• Renting in New Zealand A free information session for people who have moved from overseas to live in Selwyn will focus on renting in New Zealand. The session will be held at Lincoln & Districts Community Care, 16 Lyttelton St, on Friday, 5.30-8.30pm. Attendees will learn about legal requirements, paperwork, landlords’ responsibilities, tenants’ protection and their own obligations. Childcare will be available. People are asked to bring some food to share with others. Food from your own country would be welcome.

What does the assessor do? To carry out a workplace assessment the assessor will: • •

Analyse the demands of your job Assess your work environment, including the equipment and tools you use • Help identify potential suitable duties • Recommend modifications or equipment to help with ongoing injury-related needs • Assess your injury to decide if you need any other support to return to work • Suggest a timeframe for returning to your usual job • Identify barriers to return to work and make recommendations on how to address these. To help gather this information, the assessor will meet with you and your employer.

• Selwyn Gallery exhibition The Selwyn Gallery will have some new work on show from this Friday: Paintings by Stephanie McEwin and collage and paint assemblages by Sarah KentishBarnes. Ms McEwin is a figurative painter, currently interested in the subject of ‘bathers’. This exhibition, entitled Good Vibrations, references Slim Aarons’ famous photographs from the 1960s, as well as other favourite sources, including family photos and bathing images from multimedia. Last year, Ms McEwin won first place in the Christchurch Art Show and has since won scholarships to complement her studies. Ms Kentish-Barnes is a mixedmedia artist. Trained as a printmaker, she applies the printmaking ethos of layering to whichever medium she uses. In this exhibition, entitled Post hoc ergo propter hoc, Ms Kentish-Barnes uses paint and col-

Basketballer has focus on US BY TOM DOUDNEY

POISED: Angus McWilliam wants to play college basketball in the United States.

Eighteen months of getting up at 4.20am and a tonne of hard work have paid off for a 6ft 7in (2.04m) teenager who dreams of playing college basketball in the United States. Angus McWilliam, 15, has been selected for the Mainland Eagles basketball team and their educational tour of the United States in December. To achieve his goal of playing college basketball in the United States he is currently studying not only for NCEA in New Zealand but for the SAT exams which are part of American college entry requirements. Angus, who lives near Darfield, has been playing since he was eight and has been representing Canterbury at age group level for several years. He has been part of the Canterbury Basketball Academy for the last 18 months and in January found out he had been picked in the Mainland Eagles – a selection of talented young players from around the South Island. Angus said the United States trip was something he had had his eyes on but thought he would be lucky to achieve in year 13, let alone now. When he got the email saying he had been picked, he couldn’t believe his eyes.

REACHING FOR IT: Angus McWilliam uses his height to his advantage. “I could hardly sleep that night. I mean its not like you get these opportunities often, I was over the moon,” he said. Being part of the academy has meant not only getting up early for training four times a week but giving up nearly every social activity, from spending time with friends to family birthdays, so that he can train on Saturdays and Sundays. For the last three years, Angus has played for two teams a year. At his high school, Middleton Grange, he plays for both the under 17 and under 20 teams with players who are often three or

four years older than him. He also referees and coaches basketball on Friday and Saturday nights to earn money to help save his parents some of the fees associated with his heavy commitment to the sport. His busy schedule has limited his ability to fundraise for the trip which is expected to cost him $6000. Angus is in the process of signing up with College Recruiting in order to make himself visible to American college coaches and potentially secure an athletic scholarship. The Mainland Eagles pro-

gramme is specifically intended to help South Island basketball players get into the United States college system. The team will play several tournaments which will develop their skills and give them exposure to college recruiting scouts. The team will also watch the San Antonio Spurs play in an NBA game and see a training and season game of the Runnin Rebels from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. College basketball is often seen as a stepping stone to the National Basketball Association competition. “As a kid I always dreamed of sinking the game-winning shot or throwing down the fast break dunk in the NBA Finals, and today that dream remains still very much at the front of my mind,” Angus said. “I know my chances of making the NBA are very slim but then I think ‘why not?’ Steven Adams has done it and Tai Wynyard is aspiring to achieve the same goal, so why can’t I? All I have to keep in mind right now is just keep training hard and reaching for my dreams.” Angus was also a promising football player, representing Canterbury at age group level before giving it up to focus on basketball.

I work with people to help them change their behaviour towards food and physical activity. What’s really neat to hear is the change in the way the Shape Shifters are talking. They are excited about going to the gym and being regularly active. They also talk about food differently. They are comfortable and food isn’t controlling them, they are in control of what they eat and of their choices. Not rigid control such as you would expect with a strict ‘diet’, but flexible control, able to make a healthy choice most of the time. We are so lucky to have the Lincoln University Rec Centre and the Franks Brothers Selwyn gym involved. The Lincoln Rec Centre and the experience and passion of personal trainers, Penelope, Jean and Chris, are fantastic and making a huge difference to the people they are working with. It’s great to see the positive change they have inspired. In addition, the classes that the gym offers means there is a good variety and something for everyone. Everyone at the Lincoln Rec Centre makes you feel welcome and comfortable and encouraged.

Our nutritionist Sally has been supportive in understanding what works and what doesn’t for me. I haven’t really given up anything. It is more about balancing and often substituting or tweaking ingredients so I (we) can enjoy our favourite dishes, and being aware of what I am eating and of course how much (portion size). My goals for the first month incorporated drinking more water, eating fruit - I have found an amazing smoothie that I thoroughly enjoy each morning - and being mindful of what foods I eat and when – and yes having a fat day is okay! My exercise has increased not because I have to, but because I want to. Slowing down has always been hard for me, and putting everyone and everything else first became the norm. I have just started finding time for “me”, which I have needed. In summary I have noticed positive changes, which are easy and manageable. The weekly catch-ups keep me on track also.

ell it’s been about eight weeks now since we started the Shape Shifters programme. The first four to six weeks appeared a breeze. We were all very keen and eager visiting the gym regularly, pounding the treadmills and row machines religiously as a warm up prior to lifting a few weights which Simon at the Lincoln Uni Rec centre had organised for us as a program. Even adjusting our intake and quantity of food seemed to be going well. Using tools and food groups which Sally had supplied made it all easier to tell yourself do I really need this. The leftovers on the kid’s plates are getting a wide berth, which was hard to pass up before, going in the bin, (it’s hard changing habits of a lifetime) but hey what I have learned so far is that small sacrifices today will pay off in the long run. Those late shifts snacks have gone from, “yum a butter chicken pie at the BP service station would be nice right now” to “oh that’s right I’ve got a banana and hummus and crackers in my work bag”, and that’s why it is so important to be organised if you are trying to lose weight.

was thrilled to be selected as part of the Shape Shifters Group for Selwyn. On meeting with them all in February we have a common goal and all for different reasons. What is inspiring is “one boot doesn’t fit everyone” so we all have our own program. I had my challenge set for 2015 which has been made easier now with the expertise of a nutritionist, personal trainer and a gym membership. After having photos taken and seeing where I am at now, it makes me even more determined, albeit that I am older, it may take longer for me to achieve my goal. With great support from the family and fabulous friends, I kick-started this six-month programme. The direction and support from the Shape Shifters team has helped set up strategies to reach my weekly personal goals. The key for me is making “small changes” and being able to look at each day knowing what I did right versus wrong and how I felt.

Portion size and planning meals and food in between meals so that you don’t grab the wrong type of food, is what I have learned most so far - and hey, I have had some days where I eat the wrong things but not as often as I used to. The exercise is coming along nicely and I am really enjoying that. I am definitely getting fitter and hopefully stronger to the point where I feel guilty if I don’t do something everyday even if it is just a walk around the block. The key now is to keep it going and change from a ‘see’ food diet to actually looking at what’s actually going in my mouth.

’m now six weeks into the Shape Shifters program and it has been a bit of a rollercoaster, with some things going well, some things improving and some things that need to be tackled. Up until six weeks ago I was going to the gym, but due to work commitments and laziness I was lucky to get in three days a week. Now I’m getting up to five sessions in a week. During this time I’ve been going to see Grant at Franks Brothers Selwyn which has been fantastic. Grant pushes you just far enough to push the boundary, but not so far as to hate the process. I’m now at the point where I am getting fitter and stronger, blown out the cobwebs and I now want to exercise. One of my major downfalls has been travel for work. While away I often have a cooked breakfast, a catered lunch, meals out, which include a couple of beers and dessert. All this catering and temptation resulted in the scales trending up. To get around this, I have found a few strategies such as no more take-a-ways for dinner,

cut down on the beer at dinner, only have dessert every second night and don’t go back for seconds at lunch time. For the next few weeks I am going to focus on reducing my sugar intake, which is still far too high.

wouldn’t exactly call it a derailment, just maybe the train was diverted to another station for the past two weeks – a journey which saw an increase in bottom sitting and lack of movement. I’m talking about the impact of school holidays, combined with working from home plus trying to squeeze in the exercise. My personal trainer Penelope Sole at the Lincoln University Recreation Centre, had already given me strategies to eliminate this as an excuse. They involved a trampoline, a dining room chair and a table leg. Sounds exciting but I can assure you anyone witnessing this combination of exercises would likely turn their head away quickly! These were simple exercises that didn’t require a lot of time, just a time specific burst of energy to get the heart rate up and the fat burning. But did I follow this contingency plan? No, I did not. I dug my head in the sand and used it as an excuse. However there are some important lessons I have learned from these two weeks. Firstly, I am a group exercise person. I like to exercise around other people – often their vigour and energy provide me with motivation. This is probably why I really enjoy the exercise classes at the Lincoln University Rec Centre so much – even though at times this 40-plus body looks slightly out of place with the 18 to 20-yearolds with their tight buns and perky bits as we join in Penelope’s Body Attack class. They are starting to see results after two months of work and the change you see physically and mentally is a great credit to them - I’m only the drill sergeant. Great work, team!

I was really careful with what I ate...most of the time (apart from a leftover Easter chocolate and peppermint cheesecake that was calling from the fridge). Sally always gives great guidance in the 80 per cent/20 per cent rule. As long as you are eating really well (healthily) for 80 per cent of the time, then you are probably doing okay. I am now back into the full swing of resuming the normal programme. So those poor young girls will just have to put up with me and my wobbly bits for a long time to come.

FOOD ZEST Y PORK CHOPS WITH BUTTER BEAN MASH

Your family won’t turn their noses up at chops when you present this clever combination, and the butter bean mash could even be a healthy vegetarian meal on its own. Ingredients 1 Lemon, finely grated rind and juice 2 Tbsp Fresh rosemary, chopped 4 Pork chops, trimmed of fat 700g Potatoes, peeled and quartered 400g Butter beans 2 Tbsp Sun-dried tomatoes, finely chopped, in oil

FRESH FEIJOA SALSA SINGAPORE CHICKEN

Serves 4 Kecap manis (sweet soy sauce) is available at Asian stores and some supermarkets.

2 Tbsp Brown sugar ⅓ cup Kecap manis ½ cup Water 2 Tbsp Lemon juice ½ cup Mint leaves

Ingredients 2 Tbsp Oil 2 Onions, sliced 600g Boneless chicken thighs, cut into thirds 1 Red chilli, sliced

Directions Heat the oil in a wok or frying pan until hot. Add the onions and stir for 1 minute or until they are slightly browned. Add chicken and chilli and stir-fry for a further

2 minutes until the chicken starts to brown. Add the sugar and stir through for 30 seconds, then add the kecap manis and water and continue to cook for 5-8 minutes until chicken is cooked and the sauce starts to thicken. Stir through the lemon juice and mint. Serve with steamed rice and a green vegetable.

Directions Heat the grill to medium-high. Mix the lemon zest and juice with the chopped rosemary, pour over the pork (trimmed of fat) and leave for 10 minutes to infuse. Season and place under the grill for 15 minutes until cooked, turning once and spooning over more marinade. Meanwhile, bring a pan of salted water to the boil, add the potatoes and cook for 10 minutes. Stir in the drained beans and cook for a further 3 minutes. Drain, mash together with the sun-dried tomatoes (finely chopped and in oil) and 1/4 cup of cooking water, then serve with the pork and some steamed green beans.

This refreshingly zesty salsa makes a particularly good accompaniment to a spicy chicken curry. It’s good on sandwiches with cold meats too. Ingredients 1 handful Dates, pitted 2 cups Feijoas, peeled ½ cup Pistachio nuts, toasted

Directions Roughly chop feijoas and dates. Add pistachio nuts, orange zest, coconut, lemon juice and coriander leaves. Season, toss together and serve.

While still continuing his rugby career, he obtained a Sports Science degree at university and it was while he was overseas working as a sports and conditioning coach for a professional AFL team when he was introduced to CrossFit. After returning to New Zealand, the opportunity came up to buy the gym on Jones Road with his business partner Michael Baker, and they decided it would be great to offer the people of Selwyn all the benefits of the CrossFit programme. Grant had played rugby against the Franks brothers, Ben and Owen, so he had a chat to them about opening under the Franks Brothers banner in Rolleston. Now, Grant and Michael, who are also passionate about the great benefits of CrossFit and the Franks Brothers’ ideals, have opened Franks Brothers Selwyn on Jones Rd, Rolleston. “What’s great about CrossFit is that it really relates to people of all levels. Tasks for the cooler temperatures

There is always plenty to do in the winter garden and it’s a much more pleasant time to be working outdoors than during the heat. Here are some timely tasks for winter: Lawn care in winter Grasses will stay a better green if they are fed with a good quality lawn fertiliser. Many weeds establish themselves in the lawn when it’s weakened by cold. Examples are Onehunga weed, cotula, clover, hydrocotyle and creeping oxalis. Moss in lawns can be spot sprayed. Winter’s the ideal time to lime the lawn to keep the soil sweet and the grasses happy. Winter pest and disease control Treat caterpillars on winter veges with low toxic sprays. Check for borers in trees. Clear away debris and spray exposed holes. Spray deciduous plants with lime sulphur after their leaves fall. This helps clean up fungal spores and some insect pests. Do the same (lime sulphur) to roses immediately after pruning. Watch for aphids on new growth in late winter. Winter pruning tips Cut out old canes from multiplestemmed plants like abelia and buddleia. Prune deciduous plants (such as crepe myrtles). Don’t, however, prune spring bloomers or you’ll prevent

All about aphids Andrew Maloy explores the intricacies of the ubiquitous aphid UBIQUITOUS: “Being or seeming to be everywhere at once”. It’s an appropriate description for these insects which are often referred to as greenfly. There are reported to be 120 or so species of aphids in New Zealand, and they come in a wide range of colours including various shades of green, yellow, brown, black and grey. They are soft-bodied insects, with the pearshaped adults being usually around 3mm long, with spindly legs. They feed on a wide range of plants by poking their needle-like mouthparts into the sapstream of soft, new growth (both stems and leaves) and directing the sweet sugar-laden sap into their digestive system. The waste product of this process comes out their rear ends as ‘honeydew’, drops of clear, sugary liquid which is a source of nutrition for ants and other insects. Ants collect honeydew and take it back to their nests to feed their young, and will protect aphid colonies from predators much as farmers protect their cows. Honeydew dripping from aphids can also encourage unsightly black sooty mould fungus to grow over leaves and stems. Aphids have an intriguing life cycle in which the males of the species play a minor, or virtually nonexistent, role. Many aphid populations consist solely of females which give birth to live young without the need

for fertilisation, a process is known as parthenogenesis. Another point of interest is that when a population has plenty of room to expand and no shortage of food, all the young are wingless. High population density or a scarcity of food triggers the birth of winged young, which will leave home to start new colonies elsewhere. Adult female aphids can produce several young each day, and within a short period of time these offspring also start reproducing with the result that large populations can build up very quickly. If you look closely, or use a magnifying glass, you can

actually see large ‘mother’ aphids surrounded by their offspring. You may even see young aphids being born. Once there is a good population of aphids in your garden, you will also start to get insects that love to eat or parasitise them. Several species of ladybirds and their larvae feed on aphids, as do lacewing and hoverfly larvae, and insectfeeding birds like silvereyes. Several fungal diseases affect aphids and it’s quite common, on some plants, to see groups of dead aphids that have succumbed to fungal infection, especially in cool, damp weather. Woolly apple aphids form small colonies and surround themselves with a white cottony substance. Although they can sometimes be mistaken for mealybugs, on closer inspection it is relatively easy to tell them apart. If you squash woolly aphids, you will find the juice from their bodies is a rather unique purple colour and will stain your fingers.

any aphids which may be in your garden, there are other approaches you can take. Aphids’ soft bodies can’t stand any rough treatment so with small populations you can run your fingers over affected shoots and leaves to squash them. If that doesn’t take your fancy you might choose to spray. Most general insecticides, including several low-toxicity fatty acid sprays like Nature’s Way Insect Spray, will control aphids. hanks to Peugeot, recently my wife and I drove the length of State Highway 1 in their new 308 Active hatch to see just how far we could go on one tank of petrol, 53 litres. Now just before Christmas, I extolled the virtues of fuel efficient driving, so this was a test to see if the theories were right! Okay, I hear some will say he’ll drive like a ‘nana,’ (no offence to any of the lovely nanas I know), well much to the contrary where the car needed ‘welly’, it’s got it. Where it didn’t, we cruised in the sweet spot, around 98kph as you would. Mind you, there are a few drivers in Dunedin who would attest to just how quick this small engine is – a PureTech 1.2 litre, three cylinder turbo with six speed auto could pull away at the lights! Our five-and-a-half day trip saw stops in Rolleston, Dunedin, Invercargill, Oamaru and Kaikoura with plenty of breaks in between. Interestingly, on day two, we had to contend with two houses being shifted, one south of Oamaru and the other at Edendale in Southland right outside what must be one of the largest dairy factories around. didn’t have to look for a pump again until about 10km south of Balclutha on the way back up the island. We achieved our goal of equalling or beating Peugeot’s figure of 5.2l/100km for the Active 308. We returned 4.8l/100km on the first tank, covering 1103km. Our overall score after 1887km was 5.1l/100km. I guess it goes to prove that using sensible techniques when driving show that it’s entirely possible to achieve good fuel economy figures no matter what the terrain is like. A quick reminder of some of the driving techniques: • Look well ahead so you can anticipate. • Have the tyres correctly adjusted. • Use inertia where able and don’t overload. • Caress the brakes, don’t stomp on them, and use them judiciously. • Ensure your vehicle is well-tuned. • Keep up to speed; slowing unnecessarily uses fuel because the inertia lost has to be regained. • Drive smoothly and reduce the need to brake in a reactionary way or accelerate aggressively. • Be aware of how much you are pressing the accelerator.

e’ve all had the problem of a steamed up windscreen. With the sun beginning to lower as winter approaches, especially in the morning, keeping your windscreen clear is a must. The best demisting solution is to use your air conditioning! We usually think air conditioning for cooling, but many are not aware that it also works when the heater is on. The air conditioner, in conjunction with the heater, produces hot, dry air helping to dry moisture in the car. Turn the air conditioner on to high and direct the airflow to the windscreen. This can quickly help evaporate the water vapour that has condensed on the screen; air conditioning in your vehicle is the fastest solution to clear forward vision. Refrigerant circulates throughout the system indefinitely. But unlike your domestic refrigerator, an automotive air conditioner does have a lot of external factors that can cause a system to operate poorly or lose efficiency such as vibrations and continuous expansion and contraction of hoses and pipes. It is recommended that your air conditioning system is serviced every two to three years. It’s not a lengthy job, usually around 30 minutes for a check and re-gassing again about a 30 minute job. During a routine service done at Newlands Auto Electrical, the receiver drier, which is a canister containing desiccant, is replaced and the system is pulled into a deep vacuum. This effectively “boils off ” any moisture left so the system can be re-gassed as needed. If this service is not done, the receiver drier could eventually become saturated and unable to remove further moisture. You’ll know if there’s a leak in the system because it won’t cool things down. You will need to take the vehicle to a specialist repairer such as Newlands and have the system pressure tested and assessed properly. Just gassing up the system without repairing the leak will eventually cause more extensive and expensive damage.
