Fears have been raised over the future of one of Addington’s most notable landmarks. The earthquake-damaged Addington Water Tower, which was built in 1883 and provided water for the Addington railway workshops until its closure in 1990, may be too costly to repair. It is another potential blow to Addington’s heritage past, after it was revealed plans to develop the Wood Brothers Addington Mill had fallen through earlier this year. The water tower was not insured before the earthquake and is currently closed. Keith Brown, who worked at the Addington railway workshops his whole working life, said: “It would be

Athletic club requests grant to build new track By Max Towle Christchurch’s best athletes will no longer have to travel to Timaru for training and competition if a proposed all-weather running track in Opawa gets the go-ahead. The Port Hills Athletic Club is seeking permission from the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board to build a 400m running track to replace its grass track at Hansen Park. The city was left short of athletics venues after the demolition of the earthquake-damaged QE II stadium. Port Hills president Gary McIlory said the council were in full support of a new running track. “We were originally going to just put in a sprint track, but they convinced us to make it a full 400m one,” he said. “It will be something that services the whole city– that’s the point.” The South Island Secondary Schools Athletic Championships will be held in Timaru next month. Community board chairman Paul McMahon said young Christchurch athletes should be able to train locally. “We are so short on athletics infrastructure right now,” he said. “We have some very able athletes here, we just have to give them the best facilities.” Mr McIlroy said the proposed track would be used for both training and competition purposes. “We’ve just got to get funding to

The school will field three new teams this year, bringing their total number of players to 92. The school’s current cricket gear is almost 15 years old. Principal Alan Harrison said the gear was in sad array and was delighted to get new, safer gear to reward the school’s hardworking players.

Author sees bright future for New Three years ago Ray Jenner wrote a book about New Brighton’s history after attending a New Brighton Primary School reunion for the class of 1957. The Burwood retiree has spent the last two years compiling photographs for the book New Brighton: 1951-1965 As Seen Through the Eyes of an English Immigrant. Max Towle spoke to him about his life and the future of the east. Hello Ray, first can I ask what inspired you to write this book? It was after my primary school’s 53-year reunion. I thought there was so much to write about, it would be a shame not to. 53 years! Did you recognise everyone? No of course not. Every so often a new person would walk in and we would whisper “who’s he?” or “who’s she?”. But there were some great friends there who I hadn’t seen for years and years. Were you born in Christchurch? No, I was born in England but moved over with my family at a young age just after the war. I went to New Brighton Primary School then Linwood High School which is now known as Linwood College. Did you have a happy childhood? I did, yes. I remember very clearly that we lived on Bower Ave in the 50s and on the street also lived Dick Motz, a New Zealand fast bowler, Frank Shuter, the speedway rider, and another chap who was also a racer. Me and my dad used to go up to Cust every year and watch the New Zealand Grand Prix. There was one race where this chap didn’t do

so well and finished near the back I think. Well, that night I went over to his house and told him and his wife “he just wasn’t good enough”. Did you get in trouble for such a cheeky remark? No, I was only eight at the time so they took it in good humour. At least that’s what I thought, but he never raced again. I thought it may have been because of me. Sounds like quite a street. Anyone else notable live in the area? Actually yes. I remember we also lived near the mother of Marise Chamberlain, the distance runner who won bronze at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. What is your memory of New Brighton in the 50s and 60s? Oh it was a quite fantastic place. Back when it had the monopoly on Saturday trading, you could barely move on the main street it was so

historic: Ray Jenner holds a copy of his book. busy. It really was the hub of Christchurch. But tragically of course it’s all gone downhill since then. Perhaps my fondest memory was marching down Seaview Rd every week with the Drum and Pipe Band. Everyone at the primary school would do it and it was great fun. Where did you work when you left Linwood High School?

Well the Post Office Savings Bank in central Christchurch were looking for new workers so a bunch of us from Linwood went down there to try and get a job. I remember I was standing in line and the boss asked the girl in front where she was from. “Well I was born in England and . . .” she said, but the fella stopped her right there and said: “I don’t like

PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN people from England, get out”. Well of course I was next in line and from England, so I made sure not to say that when I was asked. Ha ha, there’s nothing wrong with people from England. How long did you work at the savings bank? Around 30 years until I left in 1992.

Brighton One of the main themes of your book is adapting to the city and the area as a migrant. What was that like? Well of course there are some people like the fella at the bank who had a problem with me, and others who were fine. There were difficulties both ways I think and the area could be quite segregated back then. Of course it’s all fine now. How long did it take to put the book together? Oh about two years on and off. I had some help from Burwood-Pegasus Community Board member Tim Baker trying to get all the old photographs of the area. That was probably

the biggest challenge. But I finished it on new year’s eve last year and now it’s out. I love New Brighton and had a great time researching all the old businesses. What do you think the future holds for the suburb? Well it’s in a transitional state, just like Christchurch is, but I think we’ll be fine. As fewer buildings are knocked down and more new ones go up, we’ll really start to appreciate what a great future we’ve got. Do you go to the local events? Yes, me and my wife have been to the sandcastle competition, kite day, and every Saturday fair.

The city council has signed off on a $50,000 loan to the Cashmere Tennis Club. The money will be used to refurbish changing rooms, toilets, and a shower block at the club. Club president Guy Armstrong said he was delighted with the city council’s decision. “The last time any sort of work was done on those facilities was in about 1978 or ‘79,” he said. “I mean you wouldn’t leave your toilet or your shower in your house for that long so we think the money loan is deserved.” Mr Armstrong said the club’s ap-

plication for the loan had been put in before the Christmas period. “It’s been a long process, but now that both the SpreydonHeathcote Community Board and council have signed off we’re good to go.” The loan has been granted as part of the city council’s Community Loan Scheme which has over $2m available for new applicants. Cashmere will be required to pay back the money over the next 10 years at 4.5 per cent interest. An assessment of Cashmere Tennis Club by the Council Financial Services Unit found it had “sound financial systems” and was confident it would have no issues paying the money back.

CHAMPIONS: Cashmere Technical Football Club celebrate after winning last WINNERS: Cashmere Technical Football Club president Bill year’s Chatham Cup. Cowan and defender Dan Terris accept the award for club of the year at the 2014 Hadlee Sports Awards.

Starting football season from scratch By Max Towle It’s back to the grind for Cashmere Technical Football Club after an historic year. Cashmere won the Club of the Year award at the 2014 Hadlee Sports Awards last month after a Chatham Cup-winning season. The club broke a 22-year hoodoo for Canterbury clubs beating Auckland club Waitakere City 3-1 in the cup final at English Park. Cashmere also finished runners-up in the Women’s Premier League. But with the new season looming later this month, it’s currently

burpees and long-distance runs on weeknights at Hillsborough Domain for the players. “The gloss from last year has definitely gone,” said men’s assistant coach Paul Nicholls. “It’s going to be a case of starting from scratch for the team and trying to do it again,” he said. He said the award was the final icing on last year’s cake. Cashmere defender Dan Terris collected the club of the year award at the Hadlee Sports Awards on Valentine’s Day. He said the players were chuffed to be honoured in such a way. “It’s a massive achievement

for the club considering the sporting prowess in Canterbury,” he said. “It was a real good night seeing all the well-known sporting people there.” Cashmere Technical is one of the biggest sporting clubs in the South Island, boasting over 1400 members. Football development manager Fred Simpson said the award was not just for the Chatham Cup win. “It definitely goes deeper. We’ve had such a great season at so many levels,” he said. season over after a final round 3-1 loss to Waitakere City last Sunday, Cashmere coaches will now try to persuade their star players to return to the south city club. “We’re unsure right now with how many of the Canterbury United boys will play for us this season,” said Mr Nicholls. “But we’ll have a deep pool of players to choose from whatever happens.” Cashmere Technical kick off their Mainland Premier League title defence with a match against Halswell United at English Park on March 22.

Appearances are improving on the southern side of town. The Koru Skin and Cosmetic Medicine Clinic has moved from central Christchurch, to 31 Colombo St. This will make it much easier for Southern and Hills residents to access skin cancer checks, as well as cosmetic skin assessments and treatments.

T

he Clinic is led by Dr Heather Jefferies, an experienced Cosmetic Physician. Dr Jefferies has a special interest in the detection and management of skin cancers and has many years of experience in managing skin cancers, as well as other skin problems. “New Zealand sun is harsh. Many of us suffer the effects of too much sun exposure – whether it be skin cancer, or just an acceleration of the ageing process, such as early wrinkle formation, poor skin texture, or excess pigment deposition. These problems are all manageable and generally can be easily treated” says Dr Jefferies. “Feeling confident in your appearance is as important to your overall wellbeing as keeping your body fit,” says Dr Jefferies. Just as sessions with a personal gym trainer can give your exercise regime a boost, a specialised skin assessment and individualised treatments can jump-start peoples’ beauty regimes, or boost them to a new level. “Many people think of bad Hollywood examples when they think about wrinkle

treatments and facial fillers, but the specialty of Cosmetic Medicine has changed dramatically in recent years”, says Dr Jefferies. Treatment techniques have advanced and improved, and Dr Jefferies believes many people now simply want to look younger and more refreshed, rather than looking like they have “had work done”. An intensive New Zealand training

programme for cosmetic medicine doctors now ensures high standards of treatment and care from Cosmetic Physicians. In addition, the approach to Cosmetic Medicine has shifted from a single treatment which focuses on one part of your face, to one that provides an overall approach to managing your appearance. Dr Jefferies believes it is essential for patients who are considering injectable wrinkle treatments or facial fillers, that they have these performed by experienced doctors. “This optimises the results, as well as minimising any risks”, she says. Treatments offered today by Cosmetic Physicians have been soundly researched and have well established outcomes, so that you can be guaranteed of the effectiveness of a treatment.

“Your face is unique. Trust your injectable wrinkle treatments to an experienced Cosmetic Physician.” - Medical Director Dr Heather Jefferies

UNITED: Students from Tamariki School took a trip to Corsair Bay to commemorate the February 2011 earthquake memorial. Students and their families paddled in kayaks, canoes, and a waka, and had the opportunity to sail in a yacht. The day came about because the Tamariki School community wanted to commemorate the earthquake with a positive and fun family event.

National Railway Museum member Colin Dash said the tower held great significance for the area. “It’s been on the skyline for longer than anyone can remember,” he said. “If it came down, it would be so unfortunate.” The city council’s heritage recovery programme says the tower “does not fall under the ordinary meaning of memorial and therefore is deemed not to be covered under the heading of statues, memorials, fountains and the like”. However, the tower is currently stable and is at 68 per cent of the national building standard, a better rate than many other devastated heritage sites. According to the recovery programme, the next step is to gauge the cost of repairing and reopening the tower and confirm its intention to proceed to consultation. City councillor Phil Clearwater said assessing the future of the tower was difficult because there is no insurance money. He said the tower had not yet had a full assessment and council staff had not put it up for funding. He said he hoped the tower could be saved. The tower is concrete, with timber floors on both the ground and first floor levels. Writing for the New Zealand Historic Places Trust in 2001, heritage historian Melanie Lovell-Smith said “[the tower] is important as the last remaining physical link to the Addington Railway Workshops, which had once been the largest industrial concern in the South Island”. It was registered as an historic place category 1 in 1992.

HEALTH & BEAUTY Rewiring the brain for people with

Parkinson’s disease I

f you have Parkinson’s disease, you cannot afford to underestimate the benefits of exercise. Being sedentary is one of the fastest ways to see your symptoms get worse. To be the best you can be at every stage of your Parkinson’s disease, review your exercise program and consider a new Parkinson’s program called PD Warrior. PD Warrior has been designed to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease which affects parts of the brain responsible for initiating and co-ordinating movement. “Exercise needs to be a front line defence for people with Parkinson’s disease. PD Warrior aims to re-wire the brain to allow everyday moments and activities to be performed with greater ease,” said Melissa McConaghy, co-founder of PD Warrior and

True

specialist neurological physiotherapist at Advance Rehab Centre. “Just like your muscles benefit from cross-training, your brain also benefits from being challenged and surprised. “Advanced Rehab accredited physiotherapists found that the right kind of exercise can improve the functioning of brain pathways not already destroyed by the disease. We already know that inactivity in people with Parkinson’s disease can lead to further and faster deterioration of the brain’s function.” Purposeful movement can combat the loss of motor control seen in Parkinson’s disease, and PD Warrior combines a high effort, intensive workout with a challenging combination of movements and mental strategy. It is aimed at people with early

stages of Parkinson’s disease with the aim of slowing down the progress of the disease. “PD Warrior is loads of fun and can get very loud with plenty of variety to keep people engaged. You get to connect with like-minded people who want to help fight your symptoms,” says Laurie. The PD Warrior programme has been available in Australia at Advance Rehab Centre since 2012 and initial results have been impressive. It is now available here in Christchurch. Muscle People Physiotherapy clinics at YMCA Hereford Street and

Bishopdale are the first people to bring this innovative programme to New Zealand from Australia. The first step is an assessment at Muscle People to determine whether you are suitable for the programme before joining a high energy circuit class. For more information about PD Warrior visit www.pdwarrior.com or if you are interested in an initial assessment telephone the friendly team at Muscle People at YMCA Hereford Street on 961 0236 or Bishopdale on 360 3606.

Science alive under 5 fest Science Alive Under 5 Fest

SOUTHERN VIEW

March 7-13

– a great opportunity to learn alongside your little one!

Science in early childhood

T

O

Joint feature with Barnardos

he Science Alive Under 5 Fest on March 7 to 13, at the Table Tennis Canterbury Stadium, 294 Blenheim Road (opposite The Warehouse), will provide children with a unique opportunity to explore, experiment and play with science. “We started running the Under 5 Fest in 2011, just prior to the February earthquake. The Fest was such a huge success that we were determined to keep it running, despite the demolition of our building,” shares Science Alive CEO Neville Petrie.

Discovery and exploration

Preschoolers are natural scientists. They are curious and keen to test out their ideas using all sorts of interesting materials. The Science Alive Under 5 Fest will give children the chance to explore hands-on science, and experiment with sound, air, light, magnets and much more.

Following own interests

Te Whariki, the NZ early childhood curriculum, highlights the importance of active exploration, where children have the opportunity to follow their own interests. By ‘playing’ in science, children have the opportunity to develop individual ideas, and to take risks and test those ideas.

ut comes a nest... a collection of bird puppets... a small container of ducks... a book about birds and nests. A gaggle of wideeyed three-year-olds sit, and already the questions start. “Oh what’s that?” asks a child. “How does a bird make a nest?” asks another. A Barnardos teacher pulls various bird theme resources from a Science Alive Science Starter Sack, and the learning continues. Children from Barnardos Kidstart Early Learning Centres Richmond and Te Puna Oraka gather around, curious and involved. The questions are individual, the responses are collective. “How does a bird make a nest?” asks a girl. “With sticks,” replies a boy. “But how do they stick them together?” inquires the teacher. “They use Sellotape,” the girl replies. “But they don’t have hands,” pipes up another child. Hands-on science is a great example,

where children can talk, think and discover scientific ideas through individual and group exploration.

Learning together

The NZ approach to education favours learning together. Coming to the Science Alive Under 5 Fest will allow children to question, discuss and explore scientific ideas with their peers, siblings and the adults around them. Adults will also enjoy the festival and leave with plenty of ideas for further learning at home.

Learning doesn’t stop at the Fest

Science Alive is a not-for-profit organisation centred on bringing hands-on science into the community. Science Alive have a comprehensive library of resources for parents, teachers and caregivers to hire. Go to www.sciencealive.co.nz, or contact (03) 365 5199 or info@sciencealive.co.nz.

A heating/cooling system

tailored to your needs

T

he team at Enviro Master Ltd can help keep you cool this summer either at home or work. Enviro Master supplies, installs and services all the leading brands including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin. This means our team can show you which system and brand will best suit your needs. Would you like to maximise the number of days you can use your swimming pool? Heating your pool can do this and one of the most cost effective ways is with a water heat pump. Enviro Master Ltd can supply, install and service your swimming pool heat pump, providing you with a comfortable, extended swimming season. Servicing your heat pump is extremely important to ensure that it is working as effectively and efficiently as possible resulting in a healthy, hygienic heat pump, lower power bills and greater comfort. But beware, not all cleaning companies are equal. We are constantly hearing of people being charged huge amounts for servicing and all they are getting is a heat pump clean. We at EnviroMaster, are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period.

It is important to remember, when selecting an installer, the manufacturer’s warranty does not cover the installation and consumers could be responsible for any repair or damage caused to the system due to poor installation. Enviro Master’s five-star installation guarantee ensures correct installation, and a demonstration so customers have an understanding on how it will best meet their needs. For a free in home consultation, call Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our showroom at 41A Shakespeare Rd, Waltham, Christchurch.

Kitchen extraction

O

pen plan kitchens are becoming an increasingly popular choice in homes across New Zealand. They allow a family to spend quality time together without infringing on each other’s personal space and activities. However, you really have to consider all the activities that will take place in the room, and how they can work together in harmony. Preparing meals, watching television, surfing the net, doing homework, paying the bills, relaxing with a magazine and chatting with friends – you have to make sure these can all happily co-exist in your open plan kitchen. Therefore, you need good kitchen extraction so that smells do not permeate the whole open plan room, and you also need to consider the noise of the range hood. “Smooth-Air Products presents a range of standard and custom options to help you achieve a healthy, clean-air kitchen – one with less smell, less steam and markedly less noise”, says national sales and marketing

Selected models have savings up to $800 off the recommended retail price!

manager Vince Atkinson. “We don’t build the rangehood shell – we leave that to the designer and homeowner, who know the exact look they want. Instead, we offer custom extractor inserts to a high level of specification,” Atkinson says. “These are designed with powerful fans set in the ceiling, or on exterior walls, out of earshot from living spaces. Systems can be configured to any shape – including a cupboard – giving a broad range of design options.” Smooth-Air Products also upgrades existing hoods, inserting quieter, more efficient mechanical elements. Standard inserts for flatpack kitchens are another design option from the company. “Our simple, day-to-day goal is to create near-silent, fresh-air solutions for a range of modern interiors,” says Vince. For further details, contact Smooth-Air Products, phone 0800 Smooth (766 684). Website: www.smooth-air.co.nz.

Astaxanthin improves our quality of life

M

ore and more research studies are showing astaxanthin to have numerous health benefits. Astaxanthin (pronounced “asta-Zan-Thin”) is a natural fat-soluble antioxidant extracted from marine microalgae that is grown in fresh water. It gives salmon and flamingos their pink colour. It is considered to be one of the most powerful antioxidants known with up to 550 times the antioxidant activity of vitamin E. Astaxanthin helps make the skin look younger, helps diminish age spots, freckles, wrinkles and damaged skin. It acts as an internal sunscreen, increasing the time in the sun before sunburn occurs. Injuries, arthritis, disease etc, all cause inflammation in the body leading to pain, poor health and even death. Astaxanthin greatly reduces inflammation and recovery time. If you take astaxanthin after hard physical activity where you would normally

feel sore the next day, most people find they are pretty much fine the next day. It is therefore great for people that work or train hard. Astaxanthin has shown itself to be one of the best supplements for recovery from nerve injuries including RSI and OOS. In fact most problems seem to come right much quicker with astaxanthin. Astaxanthin improves cholesterol quality; helps prevent cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis of the arteries. It also helps protect and heal the eyes and protect and improve brain function. Some research has shown it to help protect against cancer as well as slowing the growth and spread of certain cancers. Astaxanthin helps increase strength, energy and endurance. It provides powerful antioxidant support for the whole body with surprising protection against the ageing process. Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy. Phone 388 5757.

Miracle weight loss fruit

A

n extract of a small pumpkinlike fruit called garcinia cambogia from India and Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight management and overall health. In fact many have found it to increase fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. TV’s Dr. Oz has said it is the most effective and fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss. Even without exercise and diet changes many have found it beneficial, although even better and quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise and an improved diet. The extract of this amazing fruit is called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels in the brain that help control mood and sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of strokes and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits.

It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid. To obtain reliable results it is important to take a product that contains a standardized extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more. Pop into Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton and talk to our naturopath and medical herbalist, or one of our helpful natural health advisers. Phone: 388 5757.

Roast special, 7 days "We have introduced a new section to our buffet - an International Foods counter where we will feature different world cuisines. It starts this week with a Taste of Italy," says Margaret Wong, general manager. Running for the next few months, a select choice of Italian style soups, entrees, and mains with feature on this special section within the regular buffet each day, with Italian menu items changing every few weeks. Other countries will be featured on the new International Foods counter as the year unfolds, so watch this space for some exciting, authentic dishes.

CAFÉ SPECIALS

With every visit, his fanbase has become larger and larger: from under 7000 people in 1978 to over 60,000 in 2009 every concert sold out and surpassing all records for international comedians in NZ. This time round will be no exception. He's funnier than ever and he'll be on his very high horse as he regales audiences with the humour that's filled his head since his last visit. A recent critique from the UK ...."Like no other, BILLY CONNOLLY turns our everyday life experiences into stunningly funny situations, carrying his audience from one irreverent story to another until a collective exhaustion sets in! ... "It's great to have Billy back for a comprehensive 12-city tour,” says promoter Ian Magan. “In the 36 years he has visited New Zealand, Billy has become a true friend to Kiwis who love his irreverent and topical humour. Billy Connolly plays one show in Christchurch on Friday 25th April at the CBS Arena. Tickets at Ticketek.

Additional to the new International Foods counter launching with a Taste of Italy, the buffet will also be celebrating Ireland's St Patrick's Day by adding some traditional Irish flavours to their extensive selection. "St Patrick's Day falls on Monday 17th March this year, but we will be celebrating the event with some special Irish dishes on our dinner buffet Saturday 15th, Sunday 16th, and Monday 17th March," explains Margaret.
