SUPERCAR, SUPER COVER

Not all insurance brokers are the same. Meet SCD’s exclusive partner, Berkeley Insurance Group...

T

here is now a new option for SCD members when it comes to motor insurance.

Our exclusive insurance partner, Berkeley Insurance Group are one of the UK’s leading Chartered Insurance Brokers and we met up with their CEO Tim Maxted to ask him a few questions: What is the biggest mistake SCD members make when buying car insurance? It’s not really a mistake, more a lack of understanding of how insurance works. We see some really smart people making some basic errors in how they arrange their insurance, usually because no one has ever given them the right advice. Having spent often considerable sums on their car, they leave it at risk by not insuring it properly. Price isn’t always the indicator of quality in the insurance market. Obviously if you are paying a really low premium for an expensive car, common sense tells you something isn’t right. But often we see people paying far too much for a basic policy – because they haven’t used a specialist market. Doesn’t it cost more to use a broker? No – in fact you will probably find you save money. You will also have the confidence that you have the right cover, which could save a huge amount in the event of a claim and of course you will save time too, which is a cost in itself. You’re a Chartered Insurance Broker what does that mean and why should I use one? Well, I suppose the real question is why use a broker at all? As a broker our job is simple; we make sure you get the right cover at the very best price. We have access to a wider range of insurers including some very specialist markets. We will also manage your insurance arrangements for you, leaving you free to do other things and of course if you need to make a claim – we take care of that too. As for a Chartered Insurance Broker – only firms who can demonstrate high levels of professionalism, capability and ethics are awarded Chartered status. It’s your guarantee that you are dealing with the best the insurance market has to offer. So why wouldn’t you use one? Why shouldn’t I buy my car insurance online? There are some really great online providers and if you have a standard car and want basic cover, online could be a really good option. But for performance or higher value cars there are better and more specific solutions. You may also find you are buying the wrong cover – for example standard policies may not cover you for business use, or they might exclude some of the SCD activities by classing them as a ‘rally or time trial’. This could leave you uninsured. As your broker we would talk to you about these sorts of issues and make sure you are properly covered. Can I insure my personal cars on my company fleet policy? Absolutely and many of our clients do this. The key is to use an insurer that provides appropriate cover for the type of car being insured. A number of our specialist markets will issue policies in the company name and include privately owned cars. There can be some real advantages in doing this.

8

The other option for people who have a number of cars is for us to arrange a personal fleet policy – again there can be some real benefits in this. When I buy a new car should I buy the gap insurance? I won’t be popular when I say this, but motor dealers make a good return by selling gap insurance. Usually as a broker we can get a much better deal should you need gap cover. However, many of our clients don’t buy gap insurance as we provide ‘Agreed Value’ on their motor insurance policy. This means we set the value of the car on day 1 of the policy and if it is written off or a total loss, you receive 100% of that value – even on day 365. Again this shows how the right advice can save you a significant amount of money. Do you only provide car insurance? As one of the largest privately owned Chartered Insurance Brokers we insure virtually everything and anything. The largest part of our business is insuring companies and real estate. Many of our household and motor insurance clients are actually the owners or managers of the companies we insure – although different teams act for them in each area, we can provide an holistic service. What is the most expensive car you insure? We have a number of the usual suspect high value cars, but it’s likely to be one of the classic cars we insure that has the highest value – probably one of the C-Type Jaguars at a bit over £5M. Most importantly, what car do you drive? I’m a big fan of Bentley Motors and currently enjoying a Mulsanne. It has great performance and you can take a few friends and luggage along with you, and of course it is beautifully crafted. What is your dream car? It really is just a dream at the moment as it is yet to go into production, but the Bentley EXP 10 Speed Six is utterly stunning. If SCD members want to find out more how should they get in touch? The best thing to do is to call 0116 261 4747 or email SCD@berkeleyinsurancegroup.co.uk and don’t forget to mention that you are an SCD member.

CHARTWELL:

50 YEARS YOUNG

C

hartwell is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The Prestige Accident Repair Facility, which started life behind a bakery repairing Rolls Royce factory vehicles, has been operating out of state-of-the-art facilities on Pride Park for twelve years. It has major plans to continue growing its 50-strong shop, which boasts many manufacturer approvals including Ferrari, Bentley, Aston Martin, Porsche, Tesla, McLaren, and Maserati to name a few. The stunning glass and chrome Facility broke new ground in bodyshop design when it was built and twelve years later its contemporary, good looks have stood the test of time. Landscaped gardens, spacious parking, a 2,000 sq ft reception with deep leather sofas and coffee shop wow customers as they arrive at the facility. Chartwell was one of the first bodyshops to specialise in aluminium repairs and still has the largest independent twelve bay aluminium and carbon fibre repair facility. Equipment and tooling is top of the range and it has also invested in a bespoke Vehicle Accident Damage Appraisal (VADA) unit equipped with diagnostic and vehicle assessment technology to ensure the safety and highest standards of repair. Chartwell actively follow the latest technologies and developments to master them as quickly as possible. This isn’t always easy but it has been a guiding principle that has served the company well for many years. The investment doesn’t stop, in last two years alone Chartwell have seen investment levels in tooling and training similar to the levels experienced when the company built the industry leading site just over twelve years ago. This often surprises people, probably because of the

12

transparency and unknown or less obvious nature of some of the new technologies we have to deal with. Technologies such as radar automation, lane change warning systems, battery technology’s and multi-material usage in body structure. These developments require specialist training bespoke tooling and an entire revisit to the way cars are repaired and diagnosed after an impact. This is all before we consider the wonderful range of exotic colours and finishes now available. Chartwell have invested heavily into paint technologies to ensure it is possible to reproduce the required result as intended by the manufacturer. The company has won numerous industry and business awards over the years and in 2010 was ranked 12th in the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For. Staff welfare is a focal point and as well as regular training and personal development programmes, there are generous staff benefits, more aligned to a blue chip company than a traditional bodyshop. Plans are now well underway for the staff to celebrate Chartwell’s Golden Anniversary with a huge party. “We’ve seen enormous progress in vehicle manufacture and technology in 50 years and no doubt the next 50 years will continue to see rapid change again,” said Chris Brightmore, CEO, Chartwell. “We’ve worked hard to achieve our premier position in the industry and are proud of our staff who share our values for delivering exemplary customer service. Everyone at Chartwell is looking forward to the big party we’ve planned to celebrate this Golden Anniversary.” Visit www.chartwells.net for more information.
