Talk of the Town . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League contest against our friends from Flixton. I hope our visitors had a good journey to visit us, enjoy the hospitality they will be offered whilst here and have a safe return home after an enjoyable game. As the famous saying goes a week is a long time in politics, well the same is true of football as my notes last week were slightly more upbeat as we sat at the summit of the league table after our win here at Edge Green Street over AFC Liverpool. After back to back defeats and poor performances against Atherton LR and Stone Dominoes in FA Cup and League action respectively we are now looking to get back on track against our visitors this afternoon. Whilst we have had injuries and playing unavailability blighting the last couple of matches the disappointing thing has been the downturn in performances and I am sure that Jimmy and the lads will be eager to get back on the park and make amends this afternoon. Flixton have had a decent start to the season with two victories over Ashton Athletic and Congleton Town a draw against Runcorn Linnets and a defeat against Bootle all on the road since the opening day of the season. The side seem to be coping well with the loss of the league’s leading scorer last season Ashley Mullholland who has moved to Altrincham and must not be underestimated this afternoon.

THE MILLHOUSE

Finally, congratulations to Town stalwart Iain Dyson who if fit and selected for this afternoons contest will be making his 250th appearance for the club and in an era when loyalty seems to be a bygone ethos this is a great achievement. Since his first appearance for the club way back in August 1999 against his future club Ramsbottom United Iain played out the season at Town before moving on to pastures new and returned at the tail end of the 2005/6 season and has been with us since then despite many approaches from various clubs. A St Helens Town man through and through, the club will be marking this feat with a presentation to “Dyce” before the game this afternoon. Let get behind Town this afternoon and hopefully cheer them onto three points.. Enjoy the game. . . Jeff Voller

In Town Today . . . Flixton Football Club were formed in 1960 and have enjoyed a spectacular rise since. They began as an amateur side in the Manchester and Wythenshawe League and in 1963 switched to the Lancashire & Cheshire League, winning the third division at their first attempt. In 1973 Flixton moved to the Manchester League and into their present home at Valley Road. They were runners up in the Manchester League in 1979, 1982 and 1986. Having transformed their facilities Flixton were accepted into the North West Counties League Third Division in 1986 and finished as runners up in their first season. That year they also reached the final of the Manchester Premier Cup and the semi-finals of the Divisional Cup. In 1987 the League was reorganised into two divisions following the departure of a number of clubs to the expanding Northern Premier League. Flixton were placed in the new Division Two and won promotion again as runners up, this time to Ashton United. Flixton finished their first season in the top flight in the top half of the table, helped by the goal scoring of Gary McDonald who ended the season as the leading goalscorer in the League. The next step forward for Flixton was the erection of floodlights in 1989 and in 1993 they reached the last 64 in the FA Vase for the second consecutive season. The season 1993/4 was a disappointment, with relegation back to the second division. Determined to reverse the downward trend and turn things around, Flixton appointed Dalton Steele as manager for the following campaign and this proved to be an inspired move. The club immediately won promotion back to Division One as Champions and reached the final of the Division Two Trophy. The same season saw the completion of their £500,000 clubhouse. In 1995/96 Flixton gained promotion to the UniBond League by winning the title with a seven point advantage over Newcastle Town. Winning the Division Two title and Division One title in consecutive seasons was a remarkable feat. Burscough stopped Flixton completing a “double” by defeating them in the League Cup final at Gigg Lane. Flixton’s first season in the UniBond League, 1996/7, saw them reach the third qualifying round of the FA Cup, losing to Morecambe, and the 3rd round of the League Cup with a defeat at Accrington Stanley. The club were shocked in November 1996 when Dalton Steele resigned after two highly successful seasons. Reserve Team manager Alan McGreevey was appointed as Steele’s replacement and he guided Flixton to a respectable 13th place. At the end of the season, McGreevey resigned following a dispute with the club. Dave Morris was appointed the new manager and he brought in Chris Nicholson as his assistant. After a run of poor results and performances, the duo were dismissed. Alan McGreevey was reappointed with a mandate to stave off relegation which he did and the team finished 17th, ensuring McGreevey kept his job for the following season. The 1998/9 season saw an improvement with the team finishing in 16th place. The turn of the century saw Flixton experience their worst season for seven years. McGreevey was sacked and Dave Garner brought in from Salford City, but he could do nothing to stop the rot and the team were relegated back to the North West Counties League. Kevin Aston was appointed the new manager for the start of 2000/1 season, With the team struggling back in the North West Counties League, Aston was relieved of his duties and Dave Norman brought in. . . . Flixton Football Club missed out on a second relegation in two seasons when a final day 1-1 draw with Leek CSOB saved Flixton but relegated Leek. 2001/2 started just as badly for the club and Norman resigned to be replaced by Dave Mitten. Results didn’t improve until January when Dalton Steele returned to the club as manager. Flixton still ended the season in a relegation position. However, with changes in the UniBond League meaning that no clubs were relegated, Flixton were saved from relegation. The 2002/3 season started well enough, but in October Steele left for the second time to take up a position at Altrincham. Gary Thomas took over but an awful run saw them slump to the bottom of the table. In March the clubs main financial backer pulled out, the manager resigned and a number of first team players left the club. Tony Henderson was appointed manager but he could not save them from relegation to Division Two. In 2004/5 they were found guilty of player irregularities and had 21 points deducted. The club secured promotion in 2005/6 finishing second behind FC United. They had a slow start to the season, but ended it in fine style, going on a sixteen game unbeaten run. On top of that Flixton won the Division Two Trophy, defeating Winsford United 2-1 at Trafford. The team also reached the semi-finals of both the League Challenge Cup and Manchester Premier Cup. The 2006/7 season saw them finish 13th in Division One their best North West Counties League finish since winning the title back in 1996, this was further improved upon last term when Flixton finished in 8th place. In 2008/9 the management team and majority of players left half way through the season. The new Action from last season’s home game v Flixton management team of Lloyd Morrison and Steve Hardy had to quickly bring a new team in from scratch and did well to avoid relegation, finishing in 20th place. 2009/10 saw the Manchester outfit spend the majority of the season in a comfortable mid table position before finishing in sixteenth position. The Valley Road boys had a difficult start to the 2010/11 term but always looked likely to avoid the drop with free scoring Astley Mullholland in their starting line-up. The striker netted 42 goals in all competitions as Flixton finished 17th in the Premier Division. The hotshot has moved to Alrincham in the offseason but how will the Valley Roaders cope without his goal return this term?

A word from the Dugout . . . Hello and welcome to Edge Green Street for our third home game of the season in the North West Counties Football League. May I take this opportunity to welcome our opponents today Flixton FC who have made a reasonable start to season sitting in tenth place after four games. The last couple of games have not gone the way we would have hoped and the defeat on Tuesday night at Stone Dominoes not only saw us return home pointless but also carrying a raft of injuries. The tackle on Kav was needless and very dangerous; I remember Ian Langton suffering the same sort of tackle a few years back at Blackpool Wren Rovers FC and it finished his career. The referee did say that he had made a mistake and should have sent the player off and like our luck at the moment the said player scores the opening goal a couple of minutes after the tackle. To be honest in both games we have been well off the pace and not really deserved anything out of the games. We have seemed lack lustre and sluggish and need to get that zest back in our play sooner rather than later. We will hopefully have two or three players returning for today’s game from holidays and injury so that in its self should pep us up and hopefully we will get the correct response from the lads today. Back to today’s game and more importantly today’s opponents Flixton who have had wins at Congleton and Ashton Athletic, a draw at Runcorn and one loss to date at title chasing Bootle, tells us we are in for a very tough afternoon. With Brian Mathews knocking the goals in on a regular basis we will need to be on our guard at the back. So we will need to give Flixton the respect they deserve, but on the other hand we need to be dominant and force our game and our pattern of play upon them and not let them get a foothold in the game. It’s vitally important that we start on the front foot and compete for every ball as if our life depends on it. So let’s all get behind the lads and hopefully get the result we desire. Finally let’s hope all the players, officials and supporters of both teams enjoy the game and the hospitality on offer this afternoon and we see one or two of you again on Tuesday night against Bootle FC for our next home league game.

A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this NWCFL Premier Division tie against our friends from Flixton FC. Let’s hope their players, committee and supporters have had a pleasant journey and enjoy our hospitality. I’d also like to extend a warm welcome to today’s match officials Messrs. Walker, Doherty and Bates and today’s match sponsor Johnsons Toyota Liverpool and our match ball sponsor Auto Perfection. The last week has been a tough one for Town with two successive defeats against teams who had not made the best start to the season! Last Saturday saw Town dumped out of the FA Cup at the first time of asking when Atherton LR came to Edge Green Street and departed after a 0-2 win. Town had their fair share of the game with great chances in both halves but once again against the Crilly Park outfit failed to turn possession and chances into goals. Looking to bounce back Town made the lengthy journey to Stone Dominoes on Tuesday evening and unfortunately it was much of the same as our hosts belied their poor start to the league season by running out 2-1 winners and in doing so record their first league win. Stone took an early lead and constantly looked dangerous on the break but Town hit back with a excellent dead-ball strike from Karl Brown. Stone hit a late winner with a strike which took a wicked deflection to beat the impressive Dale Newbrook, but to be fair the score line flattered us! I know we had a few faces missing and a couple of lads carrying knocks but it was a poor showing from the lads and they will know they must improve dramatically if we are to earn the points this afternoon. It’s not all doom and gloom as ten points from the opening five games is a great return and if Jim and Andy can get a settled side we can get back to winning ways. Iain Dyson (pictured right) was away on holiday in midweek missing the Stone game and as a consequence he will make his 250th appearance for Town this afternoon. The details of Iain’s time at Town are printed elsewhere in today’s programme. There will be a presentation before kick off as the club marks the occasion and presents Iain with a replica shirt embroidered with the details of his achievement. Today will see the first 100+ Club draw which will take place in the clubhouse after the game. We’re close to our 100 members which will mean prizes around £150, £75 and £25 if all payments are made. It’s not too late to grab a chance to win one of the three prizes - please see Andy Langley at today’s game. Enjoy the game and please give the lads your vocal support and encouragement - see you back here next Tuesday when Bootle are the visitors. Match Report & Photos . . . Saturday 20th August 2011 The FA Cup, Extra Preliminary Round St Helens Town 0-2 Atherton LR Town fell at the first hurdle in this years’ FA Cup after a disappointing performance against an Atherton LR outfit who had frustrated St Helens on their previous meeting at Crilly Park eleven days earlier. The opening chance fell to the visitors when Chris Lomax struck a free kick on the left goalwards but Dale Newbrook was alert to the danger and tipped the strike over the bar. Moments later at the opposite end of the field James Gardner went on a surging run shaking off his marker before powering a well struck effort off the right hand upright with the goalkeeper beaten. A good passing move on 12 minutes saw Leon Williams advanced down the left before finding Carl Addison centrally but his effort was held easily by Joe Brobbin in the LR goal. Further pressure saw the hosts carve out chances for Shaun McKeegan who fired just over the bar and Frazer released Gardner who got to the edge of the box before finding Williams but he scuffed his effort and the chance was lost. The visitors took the lead on 20 minutes from a needlessly conceded corner the ball was sent in from the left by Alex Gavan and it was met on the front post by the unmarked James Fogg who headed home from 6 yards out. Town almost levelled three minutes later when Gardner’s right wing cross found Addison and his goal bound effort was cleared off the line by Gareth Cook. With half an hour on the clock Williams was on the end of Ian Roby’s cross from the left but he could only steer his effort wide of the left hand post. Matters got worse for the hosts on 33 minutes when some poor defending saw Lomax presented with the ball near the right hand edge of the Town box and he advanced before finding Fogg whose snatched shot squirmed into the Town net. The hosts started the second half on the front foot as they looked to reduce the arrears. An early cross by Roby saw Brobbin collect just before Williams who would have headed home. On 53 minutes Anthony Hansard sent a right wing free kick into the box which Iain Dyson met and his header went just wide of the right hand upright. Moments later Addison sent a ball into the box from the right wing which just evaded the slide of Williams centrally when any connection would have seen him reduce the deficit. With the hour mark passing Town still pressed forward Williams had a headed effort held by Brobbin and McKeegan had a deflected effort held by the stopper. On 76 minutes with the game becoming more and more stretched as Town tried to get back into the tie there a Town attack followed by a quick LR counter. Williams sent in a left wing corner which broke to Dyson on the far post his effort was cleared off the line. A counter was initiated with Fogg linking with Dale Slater he found himself one on one with Newbrook in the Town goal but the stopper turned his shot wide with his foot. The corner saw the ball break to Papis Gaye on the edge of the area and his effort cannoned off the crossbar and behind. The closing stages saw Williams beat his man on the edge of the area but Brobbin held his effort and Karl Brown linked with Hansard on the left with the latter sending a dangerous ball across the six yard box which Brobbin got a touch to but the loose ball broke just behind Williams and the chance was lost. Town will know that they will have to improve at Stone Dominoes on Tuesday if they are to maintain their unbeaten start to the league campaign. Match Report & Photos . . . Tuesday 23rd August 2011 NWCFL, Premier Division Stone Dominoes 2-1 St Helens Town The frustrating week got worse for Town as they fell to their first league defeat as they went down to Stone Dominoes this evening. Town dominated the possession in the opening exchanges and as has been the scheme in the recent matches failed to turn this into goals. The first chance of the contest fell to the hosts who took advantage of Town dwelling on the ball with Anthony Marshall released Ryan Greene whose effort was pushed wide of the target by Dale Newbrook in the Town goal. Steve Allen was lucky to stay on the park after an horrendous late challenge on Town wing back Michael Kavanagh and whilst he was off the pitch receiving treatment the hosts took advantage of his absence as Allen ghosted in at the far post to turn a Shane Reaney cross from the left home. The lead was short lived as after another late challenge this time on the edge of the “D” Karl Brown stepped up and sent the free kick over the wall and into the top right hand corner of the net to level matters. There was to be one more chance for each side before the interval, the first saw Town’s Brown deliver a dangerous corner from the right which Leigh Miller in the Stone goal just managed to claw from under his bar and a defender completed the clearance. Stone’s chance also came from a corner on the right which was sent into the box and after a goalmouth scramble the ball was cleared to safety. The second half started with the sides exchanging attacks Stone caught Town on the counter when Reaney got down the left and sent a ball towards Ryan Greene on the edge of the box and he shot just wide of the right hand upright. At the other end Carl Addison linked with Kavanagh on the right and he sent a cross into the box which took a deflection and looped towards Leon Williams it took an age to get to him and his resultant shot just wide. Moments later Addison fed Brown on the edge of the box and his effort was held on the bounce by Miller in the Stone goal. Stone then threatened when Allen profited from some poor defending but his shot from 6 yards out was turned around the post by Newbrook. Town were on the attack again when another foray forward was stopped by foul means and from the set piece skipper Shaun McKeegan headed wide of the right hand post. The topsy-turvy nature of the game continued as the hosts had a shot from a corner cleared off the Town line and Town’s Ian Frazer shot from the edge of box went over the bar. Town’s Williams did well to carve out an opening when he received the ball from Addison on the edge of the box with his back to goal and he quick turn and shot shaved the outside of the right hand post. Stone’s Reaney then had a golden chance to put the hosts into the lead but he could not apply a powerful enough touch and Newbrook held his effort. As the contest reached it closing stages Miller just managed to punch a dangerous free kick into the box away with Williams in attendance and Reaney got away from his marker before drawing a fine save from Town’s Newbrook to deny the striker. However on the next move the host were to win the contest with the aid of a massive deflection. Reaney tried his luck from 25 yards and as he was closed down the effort took a big touch off the Town man closing him down and this diverted the shot up and into the top right hand corner of the net. In added on time Rob Smith did well down the right wing and delivered a cross into the box which found Williams and the strikers effort was heading on target only to be deflected behind by a defender with the resultant corner being easily cleared and Town making the trip back to Merseyside empty handed. Stone Dominoes; Miller, Edwards, Ray, Marshall (C), Curley, Hutchinson, Greene, Lowndes, Allen, Reaney, Matthews. Subs Not Used; Marren, Hodson, Williams. St Helens Town; Newbrook, Kavanagh (Smith 80), Morgan, Dunne, Flood, Glover, Frazer, McKeegan (C), Brown, Williams, Addison (Ledger 84). Subs Not Used; Roby, Gardner, Hansard.

Iain Dyson - 250 Not Out . . . As mentioned elsewhere in the programme Iain Dyson celebrates his 250th game for St Helens Town this afternoon in a superb career that has spanned over a decade for the club. Iain made his Town debut back on the 14 August 1999 at Hoghton Road, Sutton in a home fixture against Ramsbottom United in a 3-1 win; his first goal was at Mossley on 11th September 1999 in a 1-1 draw. Iain went to play for a number of NWCFL clubs including Congleton Town and Ramsbottom United where he was, and still is, very well respected. Iain has been club captain, stepped in as acting manager on a couple of occasions and has had a brief stint as manager but for now he’s concentrating on another milestone - 100 goals for Town - just requiring another twelve for the club. Iain will be hoping to become the only player to have represented the club at Hoghton Road, Knowsley Road and the new St Helens Stadium (in due course) and I am sure everyone at the club wishes him continued success - starting with a goal or two today maybe?! Iain’s full playing history at St Helens Town is detailed below: League
