Head Coach Kori Stephenson

The list of accomplishments for Kori Stephenson just keeps on growing, including a national championship in the mix.

Stephenson, and her staff of assistants Sam Stevens and Ben Nelson, completed the journey begun a year prior when they helped guide a freshman-dominated roster to a second place finish at the NJCAA Division II national championships.

Using an outstanding core of returnees from that squad, plus a mixture of important new faces, the T-Birds took the ultimate final step when the captured the national title by beating the event’s first and second seeded teams on successive nights, culminated by a thrilling, 82-72, win over Highland (Kan.) in overtime to culminate the 201314 season.

That completed a 28-5 season, the most wins and best overall record in school history. It was also MCC’s sixth consecutive 20-win season and third straight Region I championship.

The year before, the T-Birds, featuring a very young lineup with four freshman starters, finished the season with a 27-6 record and a No. 2 national ranking. After capturing their second straight Region I title they then won their first three games at the NJCAA finals before finally falling.

Stephenson is the face of MCC Women’s basketball, having served the program as an assistant since 1999. She has compiled a 325-162 record in her 15 years entering this season and her teams have won at least 20 games in 11 of the last 13 seasons.

Originally from Forsyth, Montana, Kori graduated from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City, SD in 1998, earning a BA in Interdisciplinary Sciences. As a member of the Hardrocker’s women’s basketball team, she played for longtime head coach Barb Felderman, earning 1st-team NAIA All-American honors, three NAIA na tional tournament appearances and holding the all-time scoring record from 1997-2000 with 1,934 points. She is a member of the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Kori had been the top assistant at Mesa since 1999 during which the Lady Thunderbirds finished 7th in the nation in 2001-02 at Hagerstown, MD and 5th in 2004-05 in Phoenix, then fifth in 2011-12, second in 2012- 13 and first in 2013-14.

During Kori’s tenure at Mesa, more than 30 players have gone to play at NCAA Division I, II and NAIA schools throughout the country. With extensive recruiting efforts throughout the Valley she has established a range of upcoming talent.

Coach Stephenson will look to

consecutive time this season. Coach Kori lives in Mesa with her husband Brian and their two sons..

Assistant Coaches

During the course of Mesa's great run of women's basketball success in recent years, a crucial factor has been the presence of assistant coaches Sam Stevens and Ben Nelson. They have helped guide the T-Birds to a national championship, runner-up finish and six Region I titles.

SAM STEVENS

Stevens attended MCC from 1999-2002 and assisted the T-Birds from 2001-2004, first as a practice player and later as an assistant alongside Kori Stephenson and under head coaches Pam Olerich and Robin Schamber. He worked with the team that went to nationals in the 2001-2002 season which placed seventh. He also helped recruit many of the players that placed fifth at the 2004-2005 NJCAA tournament in Phoenix.

Stevens graduated cum laude from Arizona State University with a BA in Anthropology in 2004. He then returned to New Mexico and taught middle school PE and served as an assistant boys basketball coach at Navajo Pine High School. While there he helped the Warriors reach the regional finals in 2004-05 and the semi-finals in the 2005-06 New Mexico state basketball tournament finishing with a 49-9 overall record.

In 2007 he graduated with a master’s degree in Education at the University of California-Berkeley. He wrote a paper titled Athletics and Academic Achievement, which studied sports in secondary and post-secondary institutions and their impact on the development and maintenance of academic skills and critical issues within athletics.

Stevens taught fundamental skills camps and coached for the Utah Flight Basketball Academy in Lehi, UT but returned to help with the T-Birds upon accepting his current position as an academic advisor at ASU in Dec. 2007.

BEN NELSON

Nelson is originally from Frederic, Wisconsin and has been coaching basketball for many years.

He earned his undergraduate degree in 2003 at the University of Wisconsin - Superior and currently teaches online at Primavera High School and works for Youth Advocate Programs, Inc.

Nelson earned two Master's degrees in 2010 and 2011. His first came under the Sport and Exercise Science curriculum from Argosy in Phoenix. His second came in the Mental Health Counseling forum also at Argosy.

After moving to Phoenix in 2008 for grad school, Coach Nelson began teaching Introduction to Sport Psychology at Mesa CC.

WILLIE YOUNG

Veteran coach Willie Young has recently joined the MCC coaching staff.

Young, who also works in the Mesa Student Support Office, is no stranger to T-Bird basketball. He has been a part of the women's staff since 2013 and assisted the men's team from 1994-98. He also has an extensive background. He also has extensive experience in junior college basketball away from MCC. He was a second team All-American at North Idaho J.C. He then moved on to Northern Arizona where he was an honorable mention all-conference choice in 1980-81.

Young even has ACCAC experience having been both head coach and assistant with the men's program at South Mountain CC from 1988-92.

At the high school level he was both head girls's coach and assistant at South Mountain from 1999-2002, was head coach at Desert Vista from 2002-04, assistant at Gilbert from 2004-06 and Fairfax from 2010-12 where the team won its first playoff game ever.
