Tigers Look For a Fresh Start In 2011 Outlook Under first-year Head Coach Tommy Laurendine the “new look” Tigers will begin the 2011 season with a good mix of new and familiar faces. The Sewanee roster returns 40 letter winners from a year ago, which include five SCAC All-Conference selections from 2010 and the team’s leaders in receiving, passing, rushing, and tackles. The Tigers hope that returning experience will rub off on a young Sewanee squad that welcomes 32 freshmen to the Mountain. With the combination of youthful enthusiasm and veteran leadership Sewanee will look to a number of players to contribute to its success in 2011. “Heading into this season I’m very happy with how hard our kids have competed during all our practices,” said Laurendine. “We have a lot of confidence going into this season. If we can stay healthy I really expect our kids to surprise some teams as we move forward this fall. We’ve talked all year about what it’s going to take for us to build back this program. Sewanee has a great tradition and I want every one of our players, from the captains to the newcomers, to believe that they are a part of something bigger than just themselves.” Offense After running multiple offensive sets a year ago, Sewanee will enter its first contest running out of the Triple Option. “Overall, the players have bought into what we are trying to do on offense,” said Laurendine. “We are the type of offense that is going to keep possession, make first downs, and control the clock. We feel that if we can limit turnovers and keep our ground game moving, we are going to have a chance to wear teams down by the fourth quarter.” Sewanee will bring a mix of veteran seniors and young newcomers into its new formation. Up front the Tigers will look to a number of freshman to make an impact along with seniors Andrew Taylor and Andrew Gordon at the right 4|

tackle position. Also returning along the front five is sophomore center Connor Lewis, sophomore Jake Fojtick at right guard, along with senior Max Jones. All upperclassmen will be relied on heavily with a pair of freshmen Brandon Miller and Tanner Potts anchoring the remaining left guard and left tackle spots. Behind the men in the trenches, Sewanee returns sophomore quarterback Lee Schurlknight and senior fullbacks Sergio Acosta and Zeke Wilson. A season ago Schurlknight led the Tigers in total offense with 1,089 combined yards, while Wilson earned all-conference honors after rushing for a team-best 621 yards and three touchdowns. “Our offense is centered around the positions that Sergio, Zeke, and Lee play,” said Laurendine. “All three have had a great camp this August. With Lee being a young QB I’m glad we have a lot of senior-led players like both our fullbacks who will be able to lead this new system as we move forward.” Also in the backfield for the Tigers will be returning running backs junior Jase Brooks and senior Ben Cleveland. Both ball carriers had an impressive first month of practice and should see a significant amount of touches this fall. Even with the Sewanee offense going with more of a ground attack this season, the Tigers will still have plenty of options to spread opposing defense out through the air. The Tigers return a number of receivers including sophomore Chad Morehead, who led Sewanee in 2010 with team-best 25 catches for 201 yards. Defense On the defensive side of the ball first-year defensive coordinator Brian Newberry will hope to utilize the Tigers’ speed in his new 3-4 scheme. With Sewanee lacking some size up front, the Tigers will look to defensive ends Will Law who earned second-team all-conference honors a season ago —

and freshman David Garcia to improve on the Sewanee’s 11 sacks in 2010. At the linebacker position, the Tigers are highlighted by a pair of strong defenders, in junior J.P. Bordeaux and senior Zac Atkins. Both players combined for 155 tackles and four fumble recoveries a year ago. “J.P. and Zac are the leaders of our defense,” said Laudendine. “Like our offense we are a little young up front so I we expect our linebackers to make good fundamental tackles when they get to the ball.” In the secondary, the Tigers return first-team all-conference safety Alfonzo Knight who will look to lead the defensive backs again. A year ago, Knight led the Tigers with team-best 101 tackles and four interceptions. Opposite of Knight will be junior safety Murphy Walters, who saw significant playing time a year ago. Anchoring the corner positions for the Tigers will be freshman De’Nard Ford and junior JD Crabtree. Crabtree returns after a strong sophomore season in which the first-year starter totaled 58 stops and three pass breakups. On the other side, Ford earned the starting nod after impressing coaches early in camp with his quickness and natural playmaking abilities. Special Teams After losing two-time all-conference kicker Geoffrey Marolda, the Tigers will now look to junior Trey Knighton for its field goal and extra point duties. Knighton enters the season with little experience, however the third-year Arab, Ala., native had a strong showing during the teams three weeks of practice and first scrimmage. The strength of the special team play should be in the host of returners that the Tigers return this fall. Senior Ben Cleveland — who led the Tigers with 364 kickoff return yards last season — will share duties with junior Jase Brooks, as well as sophomores Chad Morehead, Chuck Winfield, and Parks Kingery.

2010 Review

After being named the 30th head coach in the Tigers storied history, Tommy Laurendine begins his reign as the program’s leader and offensive coordinator in 2011. An Oak Ridge, Tenn., native, Laurendine comes to Sewanee from The Citadel, where he served as the offensive coordinator in 2010. In addition Laurendine coached the quarterbacks and fullbacks for the Bulldogs. Before his stint at The Citadel, Laurendine served as the offensive coordinator, quarterbacks and fullbacks coach at NCAA Division II Lenoir-Rhyne College for two seasons. In 2008, his offense improved by more than 126 yards per game and finished the season ranked fifth in Division II in rushing, averaging 295.3 yards per contest. In 2009, Laurendine and the Bears averaged 294.3 rushing yards per game, finishing the year with the second best rushing average in Division II. Prior to Lenoir-Rhyne, Laurendine served as the offensive coordinator at Washington & Lee University in 2007. During his time with the Generals, he coached quarterbacks and wide receivers. Laurendine also served as the Generals’ offensive coordinator from 1995-1997. From 2001-2006, Laurendine

was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Southern Arkansas University. While at Southern Arkansas, Laurendine’s offenses set a combined 18 school records and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2003. The 2005 squad broke records for total offense (4,677), rushing attempts (630), first downs (250), touchdowns (44), rushing offense (296.4 ypg), total offense (425.2 ypg), scoring offense (29.7 points per game), and single game yardage (615). He also spent the 2000 season as SAU’s assistant head coach, offensive line coach, and team academic coordinator. Laurendine also had coaching stops at the University of West Alabama (1997-2000), Northwest Whitfield High School (1994-95), and West Georgia College (1991-94) as a graduate assistant. Laurendine is a 1990 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne, where he earned a

B.A. in education. While at L-R, he was a two-year starter at quarterback and was named the 1988 and 1989 South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and was a 1989 Domino’s NAIA Player of the Year Finalist. Laurendine was team captain in 1989 and led the Bears to a conference championship in 1988. A two-year letter winner, he was inducted into the L-R Hall of Fame in 2008 and the South Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame in 2008. He holds school records in career completion percentage (58.3), single-season total yards (2,409), and career total yards (4,064). Laurendine began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Lenoir-Rhyne from 1990-1991, before earning his master’s degree in physical education from West Georgia College in 1992. He and his wife, Shawna, have two daughters, Alexa, 11 and Lakin, 6.

Brian Newberry enters his first season at Sewanee as the Tigers new defensive coordinator. Newberry will head up the Tigers defense and linebackers, while also serving as the menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s golf coach during the spring.

Wide Receivers

Adrian Norris enters his fifth year as an assistant coach for the Tigers. Norris will coach the wide receivers. In addition to his football duties, he also assists Head Coach Scott Baker with the Tiger baseball team. Norris is a native of Crawfordsville, Ind., and a 2006 graduate of DePauw University. While at DePauw, he was a four-year letterman in baseball and was named first team All-SCAC both his junior and senior years. As a senior, he was team captain and was named All-Tournament. Coach Norris is a 2002 graduate of Crawfordsville High School where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. Prior to coming to Sewanee, Norris worked with mutual funds for American Funds in Indianapolis.

2010 Review

Ossie Buchannon is entering his third year as the defensive backs coach for the Tigers. Buchannon is a 2005 graduate of Samford University in Birmingham. Prior to joining the Tiger staff, Coach Buchannon spent two years as a financial services representative for MetLife in Birmingham. As a player at Samford, Buchannon was a four-year letterman. He was team captain and MVP as a senior. While playing for the Bulldogs, Buchannon earned enough receptions to rank third on the Samford all-time receptions list. After college, Coach Buchannon played professionally for one year with the Birmingham Steeldogs Arena Football team.

Before coming to the Mountain, Newberry served as the defensive backs coach at Elon since 2007. During his time with the Phoenix secondary, Newberry led five Elon players to All-SoCon honors, while ranking fifth in the nation (FCS) in total pass defense in 2009. Previously, Newberry served as the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. In his time at Washington and Lee, Newberry helped the Generals to one of the most successful threeyear periods in the history of their football program. During that span, the Generals led the ODAC in total defense, scoring defense, pass efficiency defense, rushing defense and takeaways all three seasons. In 2004, Washington and Lee ranked second in the NCAA-III in rushing defense, and 22nd in total defense. In 2006, the Generals ranked ninth in NCAA-III in pass efficiency defense. Prior to his stint at Washington and Lee, Newberry spent time as a coach at Lehigh University and Southern Arkansas. As a player, Newberry was a twoyear letterman at defensive back for Baylor University, graduating in

Offensive Line

Chris Shank enters his second season with the Tigers. After coaching the defensive line in 2010, Shank will now switch to the offensive line this fall. Shank comes to the Mountain from Muskingum, where he served as an assistant coach in 2009. While at Muskingum, Shank was responsible for coaching the tight ends. During his tenure, one of his tight ends was named All-Conference. Prior to his stint with the Muskies, Coach Shank was an assistant coach at Lehigh University from 2005-2008 and also served on the staff at Heidelberg from 2003-2005. At Lehigh, Shank coached the offensive line and the tight ends. He served as the defensive line coach for Heidelberg. Shank graduated from Muskingum in 2003 with a B.A. in physical education. As a player on the Muskie football team, he earned All-Conference honors as a tight end his senior year. He was also was awarded the Scholar Athlete Award from the Columbus Chapter of the College Football Hall of Fame. In 2005, Shank earned a master’s degree in education from Heidelberg.

Head Strength & Conditioning Coach, Defensive Line

Taylor came to Sewanee from Samford University in Birmingham. While at Samford, he spent two seasons as the assistant strength and conditioning coach and as an assistant for the defensive line and special teams. He also coached football and baseball at Pleasant Grove High School near Birmingham in 2005 and 2006. As a player at Samford, Taylor was a team captain in 2004 and received the Team-Me Award. He also served as president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A Sylacauga, Ala., native and former Sylacauga High School multisport letterman, Coach Taylor resides in Sewanee with his wife, Heather, and their daughter, Mikayla. Heather teaches physical education at St. Andrew’s-Sewanee, where she also coaches middle school basketball.

Josh Taylor enters his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Tigers. After coaching both the defensive line and linebackers this past couple of seasons, Taylor will now concentrate his efforts on the defensive ends and tackles in the Tigers new 3-4 scheme. In addition to his football coaching duties, Taylor also serves as the head strength and conditioning coach for Sewanee’s 400-plus student athletes.

Sewanee earned its fourth season opener in the last five years with a 33-14 victory over Earlham on Sept. 9. Six Tiger players earned SCAC honors including Alfonza Knight (First Team), Zac Atkins (Second Team), Max Jones (Second Team), Geoffrey Marolda (Second Team), Will Law (Second Team), and Zeke Wilson (Second Team). In addition to their success on the field, Sewanee football student-athletes earned honors in the classroom with 18 Tigers earning All-Academic SCAC awards. Former senior Still McLain earned All-SCAC Sportsmanship honors for 2010. Rising senior Zac Atkins earned SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors after Sewanee’s 33-14 win at Earlham during Week 1. Atkins tallied seven tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception and recovered a fumble in the victory over the Quakers.

Max Jones (OL) — As the anchor to the left side of the offensive line, the 6-4 junior paved the way for running backs Zeke Wilson and Curtis Johnson all season for Sewanee. Behind Jones, Sewanee finished over 1,600 yards on the ground in 2010. Overall, the Roswell, Ga., native helped double the Tiger rushing attack a year ago.

Zeke Wilson (RB) — After Wilson earned the primary ball carrier spot early in 2010, the junior back led the Tigers with an impressive 621 rushing yards on 147 attempts. After bruising his way to a 4.0 yards per attempt average, Wilson amassed three touchdowns with a 58.1 yards per game average. The Snellville, Ga., native best performance of 2010 came against long-time rival Rhodes, with 103 yards on 25 attempts.

Alfonza Knight (DB) — After earning All-SCAC Second-Team honors a season ago — as a linebacker — Knight continued his promising career, as the Tigers only 2010 First-Team SCAC honoree. The junior ranked second in the league in tackles per game (10.1) and total tackles (101), trailing only behind two-time SCAC Defensive Player of the Year Will Hawkins (Millsap). The Nashville native led the league with four forced fumbles, while producing three pass breakups, two interceptions, and four tackles for a loss.

Now entering its 21st season the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference has named an All-SCAC team in each sport since the fall of 1991. The conference’s coaches in each respective sport select members of each team annually after the completion of each season. Heading into the fall of 2011 Sewanee has placed a total of 75 members of its football team on the SCAC First-Team.

Will Law ( DL) — The first-year starter made the most of his opportunities with 28 tackles at defensive end. The 6-3 junior was a key member of the Sewanee defense that finished second in the SCAC in Red Zone defense. The Jacksonville, Fla., native compiled 4.5 tackles for a loss, one fumble recovery, and a quarterback hurry.

About the SCAC The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), now in its 21st year, was formed under its present name on April 25, 1991. SCAC: The SCAC currently has 12 member institutions in eight states: Sewanee, Centre (Danville, Ky.), Rhodes (Memphis, Tenn., originally known as Southwestern), DePauw University (Greencastle, Ind.), Hendrix (Conway, Ark.), Millsaps College (Jackson, Miss.), Oglethorpe (Atlanta, Ga.), Austin College (Sherman, Texas), Colorado College (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Southwestern University (Georgetown, Texas), Trinity University (San Antonio, Texas), and Birmingham-Southern College (Birmingham, Ala.). In June, 2010, DePauw announced it will leave the SCAC for the North Coast Athletic Conference effective July 1, 2011, for all sports except football. They will join football in the NCAC effective July 1, 2012. The SCAC is governed by the chief executive officers of the member institutions and sponsors championships in 20 sports, 10 for men and 10 for women. The group is known as the Board of Directors, which meets twice a year and is ultimately responsible for all policies of the SCAC. Beginning: The league was originally founded as the College Athletic Conference (CAC) on Sept. 1, 1962 by five southern institutions having similar backgrounds and athletic interests. CAC Charter Members: Sewanee (Tenn.); Centre College (Ky.); Southwestern (Tenn.); Washington University (Mo.); Washington & Lee (Va.) NCAA Div. III: The 12 SCAC institutions are all Division III members of the

CAC/SCAC Football Champions National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and abide by the Division III requirement of not awarding scholarships for athletic ability. All financial aid received by student-athletes is needbased or merit-based scholarships. Purpose: The SCAC was formed to foster participation in sports “solely because of interest in and enjoyment of the game.’’ The member institutions encourage organized competition in intercollegiate sports among teams representative of their respective student bodies. They also underscore the essential worth of athletics within the framework of a liberal arts education. Championships: The SCAC sponsors championships in 20 sports, with 10 for men and 10 for women. Railroad Bell: Conference supremacy is determined each April by awarding points to each institution, based on how each school finishes in the standings of the 20 championship sports. The symbol of conference supremacy is a 300-pound railroad bell which was donated by the Norfolk and Western Railway. The bell, known as the “President’s Trophy,” is a traveling award and goes to the school with the best overall sports record (based on the points standings) for the year. The University of the South won the Railroad Bell in 1976 (co-winner) and 1980. Administration: The SCAC is administered by commissioner Dwayne Hanberry who maintains the league office in Suwanee, Ga.

The strong football rivalry of SewaneeRhodes dates back to 1899, but since 1954 the two Tennessee schools have battled each fall for possession of the Edmund Orgill Trophy. Edmund Orgill (1899-1983), who appropriately was born the year the crossstate rivalry began, had close ties to both schools. He was a trustee of Rhodes and the chairman of the Board of Regents at Sewanee, 1951-53. A 1920 graduate of Virginia, Mr. Orgill received honorary degrees from Rhodes and Sewanee in 1954. He was elected mayor

of Memphis in 1956. Trophy Inscription: The Edmund Orgill Trophy is presented annually by Southwestern of Memphis and the University of the South at Sewanee to the winner of each yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s football game as evidence of their esteem for and gratitude to a man whose benefactions to them are measureless. Initiated on November 13, 1954. (Note: Rhodes was called Southwestern until 1984). Rhodes won that inaugural game in November of 1954 in Memphis and each team has had a six-game win streak. The record is 27-29-1 in favor of Rhodes in the Orgill Trophy series, and Sewanee leads the overall rivalry, 41-35-3.

Beginning: Founded by leaders of the Episcopal Church in 1857, Sewanee is owned by 28 Episcopal dioceses in 12 states and is governed by 20 regents and 155 trustees. Undergraduate Studies: The University’s College of Arts and Sciences has an enrollment of 1,500 men and women who select from 36 majors. Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa are among the national leadership and scholastic honorary organizations at Sewanee. This nationally recognized education has provided Sewanee students with the tools to become successful in career and personal choices for over 150 years. School of Theology: Officially opened as an Episcopal Church Seminary in 1878, The School of Theology is one of 10 accredited Episcopal seminaries in the United States. Current enrollment is 70 full-time graduate students who are pursuing master’s degrees and more than 50 students enrolled in doctoral and advanced degrees during the summer session. Sewanee serves nearly 10,000 students a year (lay and ordained) through its Programs Center, which offers Education for Ministry (EfM) and continuing education programs. Henry Phillips, and Frank Juhan — came to the Mountain as teenagers between 1898 and 1910 and left the Domain as legends. Nearly a half century later, coach Shirley Majors, father of Tennessee greats Johnny and Bobby, came to Sewanee (1957-1977), continued the tradition, and molded the Tigers into a small college power with two unbeaten teams and six conference titles. The Sewanee football field was dedicated as Benjamin Humphreys McGee Field at Homecoming, Oct, 22, 1977. Prior to that date, it was known as Hardee Field, named for Lt. General William J. Hardee, an officer in the Confederate Army. Best known as “Ug’’ McGee, the Greenville, Miss., native was a 1949 Sewanee graduate and a devoted alumnus, athlete, regent, and trustee. McGee, who died in 1975, was a two-year lettermen in football (1946, 1948) and was also a member of the Order of Gownsmen and the “S’’ Club.

McGee Field on the 13,000-acre Sewanee campus in southern middle Tennessee is the South’s oldest college football field (among NCAA schools) in its original location and the fourth oldest in the country. Open for business on Nov. 7, 1891, Sewanee lost that first home game with intra-state rival Vanderbilt (22-0), but overall has won 65% of its games (258-148-11) in 116 seasons before the home folks on Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau. Along the way, the Tigers have constructed 49 perfect seasons and posted 128 shutouts at McGee Field. The first 50 years (1891-1940) on the Mountain produced an impressive slate of 106-15-9 (85.0%). Within that first half century was a near perfect run of 51-0-4 from 1894-1913, including 32 straight wins (1901-1911), with Georgia, Tennessee, and Mississippi State among the fallen foes. A 7-6 loss to Georgia in 1914 barely slowed the Tigers as they were 29-4-3 at home the next 12 years. Now 60 years removed from its last battle with a major college foe — a 6-0 home loss to Fla. State; Oct. 22, 1949 — Sewanee is still winning at home at the NCAA Division III level. A charter member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Tigers’ “home field advantage’’ has been a catalyst for 12 small college conference titles, including three in the past 20 years, the most recent in 2000. While McGee Field is tops in seniority South of the Mason Dixon Line — Georgia Tech’s Grant Field, built in 1913, is second on the list — a trio of NCAA Division III New England schools known as “the Little Three’’ took to the gridiron before Sewanee. Originally known as Hardee Field — re-named McGee Field at Homecoming 1977 — the home turf has been the setting for fall afternoon heroics of 38 All-Americans and a trio of future Hall of Famers. From the opening pitch of the first Sewanee varsity baseball game in 1875 to the success of our current varsity athletes, teams, and coaches, the rich sports heritage of the University is known nationwide. With a long list of undefeated teams, All-Americans, and national scholarathletes, Sewanee continues its impressive athletic accomplishments into the 21st century. One of the highest honors for those who represent the varsity athletics program is induction in the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame’s purpose is to give lasting recognition to those individuals and teams who have made exceptional contributions to the achievements and prestige of the University in the field of athletics and who have continued to demonstrate in their lives the values imparted by intercollegiate athletics. Athletic Training Room The athletic training room staff at Sewanee housed in the Fowler Sport & Fitness Center consists of two certified athletic trainers who use a 2,000-square-foot treatment and rehabilitation center to service the nearly 400 student-athletes in 20 varsity sports. The head athletic trainer is Ray Knight who is in his tenth year in this position at Sewanee after serving as an assistant athletic trainer here on the Mountain in 2000-01. Knight is assisted by Danielle Green and Matt McGraw.

Josh Taylor serves as head strength coach for over 400 Sewanee varsity athletes competing in 24 varsity sports. In his fourth year at Sewanee, Taylor also serves as the football linebackers coach and defensive coordinator. The 50' x 40', 2,000-square-foot weight room is located in the Fowler Sport and Fitness Center. Weight training is an important and vital part of the athletesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; overall fitness program here at Sewanee. The Fowler Center also has an exercise area with handball and racquetball courts and a variety of exercise machines.

Seven Sewanee coaches have won championships in the 114 seasons of football on the Mountain. Shirley Majors won six championships from 195777 and was 93-74-5 (55.5%). Others to win championships were Harris Cope (1), who was 43-18-7 (68.4%) from 1909-1916; Horace Moore (3), who was 38-42 from 1978-86; John Windham (1), who was 45-61 (44.8%) from 1996-2006; Bill Samko (2), who was 35-27-1 (56.4%) from 1987-93; Billy Suter (1), who was 22-3-3 (83.9%) from 18991901, and JG Jayne (1), who was 5-3-1 (61.1%) in 1897 and 1898. William White coached eight years from 1946-53 and was 38-23-3 with a 61.7 Horace Moore winning percentage. On April 7, 2011, Tommy Laurendine was hired as the 30th head coach in Sewanee history. Laurendine takes over the program from former Tiger standout Robert Black who led the program for the previous four seasons. As of 2011, the Sewanee football program has provided 28 individuals and three teams (1899, 1958 and 1963) that have been inducted into the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame. Described by some football analysts as one of the best teams ever, the undefeated 1899 Sewanee football team is accorded that lofty ranking, not just for its 12-0 record, but for its mid-season train ride into history. A remarkable five wins in six days — all on the road and all by shutouts against Southern powers — has placed this Sewanee team in an elite class. Preceding football legends such as the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame of the 1920s, Fordham’s Seven Blocks of Granite of the 1930s and LSU’s Chinese Bandits of the late 1950s, the Iron Men have written their own place in gridiron history. The men of Sewanee proudly carried the school’s banner that fall and the “S’’ on their purple jerseys was as familiar to opponents from North Carolina to Texas as Superman would be in the mythical city of Metropolis a half century later.
