Sewanee Coaching Staff SCOTT BAKER Head Baseball Coach, 12th Year, 27th Overall Atlantic Community College (N.J.), A.A., 1980 Salisbury State (Md.), B.A., 1982 Georgia Southern, M.Ed., 1986 In the 11 years that Scott Baker has been at the helm of Sewanee baseball, the program has seen drastic improvements ON and AT the field. Since Baker’s arrival on the Mountain, the Tigers have set school records for wins in a season, conference wins, have qualified for the SCAC tournament for the first three times in school history, and have compiled more wins than in any 11-year span in school history. By virtue of a 16-4 win over Hamilton (N.Y.) College on March 20, 2009, Baker became the winningest coach in Sewanee baseball history, surpassing the legendary Shirley Majors’s previous mark of 106 victories. Baker has also overseen an almost complete renovation of Montgomery Field. With the assistance and generosity of so many parents, followers, and fans, the Tigers now boast a facility that includes: an 80 ft. by 36 ft. roofed-in hitting area, infield sprinkler system, spacious dugouts, handmade wooden benches, textured block backstop wall with netting, new sod and a laser graded infield, six-foot fencing with windscreen and capping surrounding the entire field, new bleacher seating, reconstructed bull pens, artificial turf in front of the dugouts and in the on deck areas, new foul poles and a new scoreboard. Additionally, the Tigers have had 105 All-SCAC Academic selections, two Academic All-District picks, five All-Region choices, 19 First Team All-SCAC, 14 Honorable Mention All-SCAC performers, and one SCAC Freshman of the Year winner since 2001. Much of this can be attributed to Baker’s insistence on one thing, that his players give their best efforts in everything they do at all times. During his 15 years as an assistant coach at Georgia Southern University, Baker helped the Eagles to 521 wins, seven conference championships, and a trip to the College World Series. His duties included 13 years as recruiting coordinator, serving as third base coach and 6

handling on-field responsibilities for hitting, offensive strategy, catching, and outfield play. Administratively, “Bake” oversaw scheduling, academic monitoring, travel coordination, equipment, and daily practice planning in addition to recruiting. Under Baker’s direction, GSU successfully signed 14 All-Americans, 26 All-Conference selections, and 35 drafted players, including three who reached the major leagues. During that span, “Bake’s” recruiting classes were ranked in the top 30 in Division I eight times. The Eagles also claimed four Conference Players of the Year, three GTE Academic All-Americans, and four Freshman All-Americans. The Linwood, N.J., native was promoted to associate head coach under ABCA Hall of Fame Coach Jack Stallings in 1994. One season later, GSU reached No. 7 in the national polls and fell one game short of the CWS. Prior to his stint at Georgia Southern, Baker coached for a pair of seasons at his alma mater, Mainland Regional High School in Linwood. Baker also managed at New Market and Harrisonburg in the Shenandoah Valley (Va.) Collegiate League for two summers (1987-88). His playing career highlights include being team captain in high school and a four-year starter in college. Mainly a catcher, he was all-league as a prep and in two of his four seasons of college ball — at Atlantic Community College (N.J.) and then Salisbury (Md.) — his teams advanced to post-season play, falling one game short of the NCAA Division III World Series in his junior year. He has been a speaker at various clinics around the southeast, and is a six-time guest instructor at the New York Baseball Academy. He was coordinator and staff member at the Georgia Southern Teaching Baseball School and has traveled as far away as Aruba for a series of camps and clinics. Scott is the author of numerous articles published in national magazines on fundamentals, teaching, fund raising, and the psychology of coaching. He holds an associate of arts degree (1980) from Atlantic Community College where he graduated with high honors, a social science degree (1982) from Salisbury State, and a master's in counseling from Georgia Southern (1986). Baker married his high school sweetheart, the former Jeanne Smith, in 1983. They have two sons, Scotty, 25, and Kyle, 21. The Bakers live in Winchester, Tenn. 2012 SEWANEE BASEBALL

ADRIAN NORRIS Assistant Coach, Fifth year In just his fifth year on the Domain, Norris has made a big impact on the Sewanee baseball program. In addition to coordinating recr uiting , Norris also serves as third-base coach and works with the Tiger catchers and hitters. He is an assistant football coach for the Tigers as well. A native of Crawfordsville, Indiana, Norris is a 2006 graduate of SCAC opponent DePauw University where he earned his degree in economics. A four-year letterman at DePauw, Norris was

named first team All-SCAC his junior and senior years. He was team captain and an All-SCAC tournament selection his senior season. After a year working in the mutual fund industry, Norris turned to his love of sports and came to Sewanee in the fall of 2007. While at Crawfordsville High School, Norris lettered in baseball, football, and basketball. He is single and lives in Sewanee. “Norris’ contributions and abilities as a coach get better every year,” Head Coach Scott Baker said. “Not only has he taken on more and more responsibility at practice and during games, his work ethic is tireless, evidence of that being the strong recruiting class we assembled this season (20 frosh in the class of 2015). We are fortunate to have such an outstanding young man with us.”

From 1875 through 1922, Sewanee fielded a baseball team in 46 of those years. Those teams compiled a record of 136 wins, 144 losses and four ties. There was no baseball team in 1919 and 1920, or from 1923 through 1959. In 1961, the legendary Shirley Majors provided the rebirth of baseball on the Mountain and began the “modern era” of Tiger baseball.

The University of the South (known simply as “Sewanee” to students, faculty, staff, and friends) offers an unmatched educational experience in an extraordinary place of life and learning. The Sewanee experience is characterized by a challenging liberal arts curriculum, serious intellectual engagement between faculty and students, and one of the largest and most beautiful college campuses in the world. The University and The School of Theology are located on a 13,000-acre campus known as “the Domain,” which sits atop the Cumberland Plateau in southern Middle Tennessee between Nashville and Chattanooga. BEGINNING: Founded by leaders of the Episcopal Church in 1857, Sewanee is owned by 28 Episcopal dioceses in 12 states and is governed by 20 regents and 155 trustees. UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES: The University’s College of Arts and Sciences has an enrollment of 1,478 men and women who select from 36 majors. Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa are among the national leadership and scholastic honorary organizations at Sewanee. This nationally-recognized education has provided Sewanee students with the tools to become successful in career and personal choices for over 150 years. THE SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY: Officially opened as an Episcopal Church Seminary in 1878, The School of Theology is one of 10 accredited Episcopal seminaries in the United States. Current enrollment is 73 full-time graduate students who are pursuing master’s degrees and more than 50 students enrolled in doctoral and advanced degrees during the summer session. Sewanee serves over 7,500 students a year (lay and ordained) through its Programs Center, which offers Education for Ministry (EfM) and continuing education programs. INVOLVEMENT: A broad range of extracurricular activities for students include intramurals, fraternities and sororities, the Sewanee Outing Program, Chaplaincy Outreach Program, Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and the Senior Citizens Program plus the Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service.
