2012 Preview 2011 REVIEW Sewanee finished with its best record since the 2005 season. Overall, the Tigers were second in the league in total rushing (231.5 ypg). Additionally, Sewanee was fourth among all SCAC teams in scoring (23.5 ppg) and third in scoring defense (19.5 ppg). Individually, head coach Tommy Laurendine was named the 2011 SCAC Co-Coach of the Year, while two Tigers earned All-SCAC First-Team honors. OUTLOOK Once again, the Tigers will be young. Sewanee opens its 2012 season with 29 freshmen and 21 sophomores. After a surprise 5-5 season a year ago, expectations for Sewanee are high. To match or better last year’s results, the Tigers will have to defeat some tough opponents this fall. Sewanee opens the season with home games against Puget Sound and Washington and Lee. The Tigers will then head on the road the first time against Maryville, on September 15, and against Austin College, a week later. The Tigers open the tough month of October with home games against Willamette and Centre, before heading back on the road with trips to Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern. Finally, Sewanee closes out its season with home games against rival Rhodes, for Homecoming, and against Trinity, on Senior Day. OFFENSE Sewanee returns dual starters in juniors Lee Schurlknight and Curtis Johnson. After a successful 2011 season, both signal callers should play a larger factor in 2012. Combined Schurlknight and Johnson added 14 touchdowns, 841 rushing yards, and 757 passing yards in 2011. Despite the graduation of 2011 seniors Zeke Wilson and Ben Cleveland, the Tigers return a strong nucleus of quality running backs. Led by sophomore Barrett Goodson and seniors Jase Brooks

4|

and Sergio Acosta, Sewanee is expected to run a lot this fall. After finishing second, last season, among SCAC teams in rushing per game, Sewanee added to its backfield this offseason. With the additions of Devonte Jones, Andy Moots, and Cody Daniel, the backfield is expected to be a place of strength in Sewanee’s triple option offense.

SPECIALIST The Tigers return both kickers from last season. Senior Garrett Schlosser is expected to handle all field goals, extra points and kickoffs, while fellow classmate Trey Knighton is scheduled to punt. Last season, Scholosser was 4-of-6 on field goals including a long of 46 yards against Millsaps.

Finally, one of the largest factors of success this season will be the play of the men in front of the running backs. Despite not having a lot of depth at this position, the Tigers do have a number of talented offensive linemen. After paving the way for running backs all last season, the key for this group will be to stay healthy. Sewanee returns starter Brandon Miller, who started every game at left guard in 2011.

In the return game, speedy junior Quentin Jones and De’Nard Ford are both expected to handle most punts and kickoffs.

DEFENSE Led by two seniors linebackers and three returning defensive backs, Sewanee will look to build on a defense that thrived in a new 3-4 system last fall. With no senior starters on the defensive line, the Tigers hope that freshman A.J. McMullen, sophomore Quillan Synder, and junior Justin Taylor will gain experience quickly. Behind the young, but talented defensive line, will be a strong group of linebackers. Senior starters J.P. Boudreaux and John Davenport return after they combined for 97 tackles last season. Also, junior Dave McKeithen, who was second on the team last season with 53.5 tackles, and sophomore J.P. McDonnell are expected to see significant playing time. Anchored by seniors J.D. Crabtree and Murphy Walters, along with sophomore De’Nard Ford, the secondary returns three players that combined for seven out of Sewanee’s 13 interceptions in 2011.

After being named the 30th head coach in the Tigers’ storied history Tommy Laurendine began his reign as the program’s leader and offensive coordinator in 2011. In his first season at the helm, Laurendine guided Sewanee to its best season since 2005. With more overall wins than the Tigers had in its previous four seasons, Laurendine was honored as the SCAC Co-Coach of the Year. In his first year on the Mountain, Laurendine turned around a program that had averaged just 10.4 points per game in 2010. A season later, the Tigers finished fourth in the SCAC in scoring (23.5 ppg) and third in scoring defense (19.5 ppg). Additionally, Sewanee finished second in the SCAC in total rushing (231.5 ypg) while defeating long-time rival Rhodes for the first time since 2005. An Oak Ridge, Tennessee, native, Laurendine came to Sewanee from The Citadel, where he served as the offensive coordinator in 2010. In addition Laurendine coached the quarterbacks and fullbacks for the Bulldogs. Before his stint at The Citadel, Laurendine served as the offensive coordinator, quarterbacks, and fullbacks coach at NCAA Division II Lenoir-Rhyne College for two seasons. more than 126 yards per game and finished the season ranked fifth in Division II in rushing, averaging 295.3 yards per contest. In 2009, Laurendine and the Bears improved to 294.3 rushing yards per game, finishing the year with the second best rushing average in Division II. Prior to his stint at Lenoir-Rhyne, Laurendine served as the offensive coordinator at Washington & Lee University in 2007. During his time with the Generals, he coached quarterbacks and wide receivers. Laurendine also served as the Generals’ offensive coordinator from 1995-1997. From 2001-2006, Laurendine was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Southern Arkansas University. While at Southern Arkansas, Laurendine’s offenses set a combined 18 school records and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2003. The 2005 squad broke records for total offense (4,677), rushing attempts (630), first downs (250), touchdowns (44), rushing offense (296.4 ypg), total offense (425.2 ypg), scoring offense (29.7 points per game), and single game yardage (615). He also spent the 2000 season as SAU’s assistant head coach, offensive line coach, and team academic coordinator. Laurendine also had coaching stops at the University of West Alabama (1997-2000), Northwest Whitfield High School (1994-95), and West Georgia College (1991-94) as a graduate assistant. Laurendine is a 1990 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne, having earned a bachelor of arts in education. While at L-R, he was a two-year starter at quarterback and was named the 1988 and 1989 South Atlantic Conference

Offensive Player of the Year and was a 1989 Domino’s NAIA Player of the Year Finalist. Laurendine was team captain in 1989 and led the Bears to a conference championship in 1988. A two-year letter winner, he was inducted into the L-R Hall of Fame in 2008 and the South Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame in 2008. He holds school records in career completion percentage (58.3), single-season total yards (2,409), and career total yards (4,064). Laurendine began his coaching career as a student assistant coach at Lenoir-Rhyne from 1990-1991, before earning his master’s degree in physical education from West Georgia College in 1992. He and his wife, Shawna, who serves as the head volleyball coach at Sewanee, have two daughters, Alexa, 12 and Lakin, 7.

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR New defensive coordinator Tom Evangelista joined head coach Tommy Laurendine’s staff in the spring of 2012. The arrival reunited Laurendine and Evangelista, who previously coached together at West Alabama in 1997-98. Before Sewanee, Evangelista was

with that job for 18 months prior to changing his role with the team. In 2005 and 2006, his defense ranked among the NCAA Division I-AA leaders in every major defensive category. His special teams were near the top as well, and his kickoff coverage team led the nation in 2004. From 2002-2004, Evangelista was a graduate assistant/secondary assistant at Clemson University. There he worked with the secondary and was a special teams position coach. Evangelista was part of two bowl teams, the 2002 Tangerine Bowl and the 2004 Peach Bowl squad who defeated then No. 6 Tennessee, 27-14. In 1999, Evangelista took over as the secondary coach at the University of West Georgia. The following January, he also undertook the duties of defensive coordinator. Then, one year later, he was tabbed as the defensive coordinator, linebacker coach, and recruiting coordinator. During the 2000 season, his defense led the Gulf South Conference, giving up a mere 19.0 points per game and 299.3 yards of total offense. The team also ranked among the NCAA Division II statistical leaders in every major defensive category. Evangelista’s first full-time coaching assignment came at the University of West Alabama in 1997 after spending nearly three years at West Georgia College as a graduate assistant, tight end coach, and defensive assistant. While at UWA, Evangelista coached the defensive backs and called the defenses for the Tigers during the 1997 and 1998 seasons. In addition to his valuable experience on the field, Evangelista has also directed the Tommy Bowden Youth Camp from 2004-2006. An active member of the American Football Coaches Association since 1994, Evangelista earned his B.S. in mathematics and computer science

Prior to PC, Evangelista served nearly three years as the special teams coordinator and corners coach at nearby Furman University. During that time, he was responsible for game plan preparation and coordinating three phases of the special teams. His special teams squads ranked among the NCAA Division I-AA statistical leaders. Evangelista coached William Middleton to All-American honors in 2008 and saw Middleton selected in the fifth round of the NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons. Prior to his time in Greenville, S.C., Evangelista worked as the defensive coordinator and linebacker coach at South Carolina State. He initially started as the special teams coordinator and secondary coach, filling in

Additionally, Sewanee had finished with the third most interceptions (13) in 2011. Individually, former player Alfonza Knight was a three-time All-SCAC safety under Buchannon while two other defensive backs earned All-SCAC Second-Team honors last season. Buchannon is a 2005 graduate of Samford University in Birmingham. Prior to joining the Tiger staff, Coach Buchannon spent two Buchannon years as a financial services representative for MetLife in Birmingham. As a player at Samford, Buchannon was a four-year letterman and was team captain and MVP as a senior. While playing for the Bulldogs, Buchannon earned enough receptions to rank third on the Samford all-time receptions list. SAA FOUNDING VALUES The Southern Athletic Association is committed to fostering athletic competition and cooperation among academically selective, residential liberal arts colleges located in the southeastern region of the United States. The geographic focus will result in reduced travel time and fewer missed classes, while still allowing for a strong conference of like-minded institutions, all of which integrate competitive athletics into the whole of the student’s educational experience.

Orgill Trophy Games: Sewanee-Rhodes Series

The strong football rivalry of SewaneeRhodes dates back to 1899, but since 1954 the two Tennessee schools have battled each fall for possession of the Edmund Orgill Trophy. Edmund Orgill (1899-1983), who appropriately was born the year the crossstate rivalry began, had close ties to both schools. He was a trustee of Rhodes and the chairman of the Board of Regents at Sewanee, 1951-53. A 1920 graduate of Virginia, Mr. Orgill received honorary degrees from Rhodes and Sewanee in 1954. He was elected mayor

of Memphis in 1956. Trophy Inscription: The Edmund Orgill Trophy is presented annually by Southwestern of Memphis and the University of the South at Sewanee to the winner of each year’s football game as evidence of their esteem for and gratitude to a man whose benefactions to them are measureless. Initiated on November 13, 1954. (Note: Rhodes was called Southwestern until 1984). Rhodes won that inaugural game in November of 1954 in Memphis and each team has had a six-game win streak. The record is 29-28-1 in favor of Rhodes in the Orgill Trophy series, and Sewanee leads the overall rivalry, 42-35-3.

The Sewanee football field was dedicated as Benjamin Humphreys McGee Field at Homecoming, Oct, 22, 1977. Prior to that date, it was known as Hardee Field, named for Lt. General William J. Hardee, an officer in the Confederate Army. Best known as Ug’ McGee, the Greenville, Miss., native was a 1949 Sewanee graduate and a devoted alumnus, athlete, regent, and trustee. McGee, who died in 1975, was a two-year lettermen in football (1946, 1948) and was also a member of the Order of Gownsmen and the “S’’ Club.

COACHES

McGee Field on the 13,000-acre Sewanee campus in southern middle Tennessee is the South’s oldest college football field (among NCAA schools) in its original location and the fourth oldest in the country. Open for business on Nov. 7, 1891, Sewanee lost that first home game with intra-state rival Vanderbilt (22-0), but overall has won 66 percent of its games (261-150-11) in 117 seasons. Along the way, the Tigers have constructed 49 perfect seasons and posted 128 shutouts at McGee Field. The first 50 years (1891-1940) on the Mountain produced an impressive slate of 106-15-9 (85.0%). Within that first half century was a near perfect run of 51-0-4 from 1894-1913, including 32 straight wins (1901-1911), with Georgia, Tennessee, and Mississippi State among the fallen foes. A 7-6 loss to Georgia in 1914 barely slowed the Tigers as they were 29-4-3 at home the next 12 years. Now 60 years removed from its last battle with a major college foe — a 6-0 home loss to Fla. State; Oct. 22, 1949 — Sewanee is still winning at home at the NCAA Division III level. A charter member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Tigers’ home field advantage’ has been a catalyst for 12 small college conference titles, including three in the past 20 years, the most recent in 2000. While McGee Field is tops in seniority South of the Mason Dixon Line — Georgia Tech’s Grant Field, built in 1913, is second on the list — a trio of NCAA Division III New England schools known as the Little Three took to the gridiron before Sewanee. Originally known as Hardee Field — re-named McGee Field at Homecoming 1977 — the home turf has been the setting for fall afternoon heroics of 38 All-Americans and a trio of future Hall of Famers. The three hall of fame inductees — Diddy Seibels, Henry Phillips, and Frank Juhan —

The Iron Men of 1899 “The Tigers from Tennessee’s Sewanee went 12-0 in 1899, but that’s not why this team is No. 1 on his alltime Southern list. Sewanee took the ultimate road trip, playing five games in six days, all on the road. And not only did the Tigers win them all, but all five games were by shutouts.” In Southern Fried Football: The History, Passion and Glory of the Great Southern Game, author and Atlanta Journal-Constitution sports writer Tony Barnhart. Described by some football analysts as one of the best teams ever, the undefeated 1899 Sewanee football team is accorded that lofty ranking, not just for its 12-0 record, but for its mid-season train ride into history. A remarkable five wins in six days — all on the road and all by shutouts against Southern powers — has placed this Sewanee team in an elite class. Preceding football legends such as the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame of the 1920s, Fordham’s Seven Blocks of Granite of the 1930s and LSU’s Chinese Bandits of the late 1950s, the Iron Men have written their own place in gridiron history. The men of Sewanee proudly carried the school’s banner that fall and the “S’’ on their purple jerseys was as familiar to opponents from North Carolina to Texas as Superman would be in the mythical city of Metropolis a half century later. But far from comic book super heroes, the “Iron Men” of Sewanee posted some legendary wins against those Southern opponents that fall.

In 2012, the College Football Hall of Fame named the 1899 team the greatest college football team in history.

COACHES

From the opening pitch of the first Sewanee varsity baseball game in 1875 to the success of our current varsity athletes, teams, and coaches, the rich sports heritage of the University is known nationwide. With a long list of undefeated teams, All-Americans, and national scholar-athletes, Sewanee continues its impressive athletic accomplishments into the 21st century. One of the highest honors for those who represent the varsity athletics program is induction in the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame’s purpose is to give lasting recognition to those individuals and teams who have made exceptional contributions to the achievements and prestige of the University in the field of athletics and who have continued to demonstrate in their lives the values imparted by intercollegiate athletics. The reward of competition through sports, the importance of good sportsmanship, and the desire to succeed through hard work, discipline, and teamwork, have proven to be of value in the lives of the men and women who represent Sewanee varsity athletics.
