TO V O L U M E O N E

When locally owned businesses invest in one another, good things happen. The inaugural Scout Guide Boulder brings together a community of entrepreneurs, taste makers, culture creators, leaders, adventurers, innovators, and caring people. Whether you are a long-time Boulder resident or visitor to our county, these exceptional people will help you live your best life in Boulder. I wish I could introduce you personally to each individual in this book. I love listening to the stories of their personal passions, goals for their businesses, family histories, or the reasons they love being a Boulderite. Use this book to make discoveries. Hold onto it as a keepsake or share it. When you visit these business owners, who care so much about one another and our way of life, tell them The Scout Guide sent you.

Boulder loves a good adventure, which puts Southern Arizona high on our list of trending Scouted Destinations. We sat down with The Scout Guide Tucson & Southern Arizona’s Editor-Owner, MaryAnn Wittmann, to get an insider’s view on visiting the wonders of the Sonoran Desert.

Follow MaryAnn as she ‘Scouts the Southwest,’ connecting people to the best locally owned businesses at thescoutguide.com/tucson and @tsgtucson

MARYANN’S FAVORITE REASONS TO VISIT It’s a true oasis. “I love sharing why Southern Arizona is so special. Showcasing the raw beauty of the Sonoran Desert, especially hiking amongst the majestic cactus in the Saguaro National monument, is at the top of my list. Our surrounding mountain ranges are full of off-road adventures; or bicycle the 130+ miles of multiuse bike path known as ‘the loop.’ Vitamin D is never in short supply with in Tucson, and we’re home to unparalleled tennis, golf, and health and wellness destinations.” The culinary scene. “Eating local in Tucson is a world class culinary experience. In 2015 we were the first US city awarded the UNESCO City of Gastronomy designation for having the nation’s longest agricultural history, distinctive food traditions, and an innovative local food system. As Editor of TSG Tucson & Southern Arizona, I love collaborating with Tucson City of Gastronomy, the nonprofit organization managing the UNESCO designation and growing a sustainable desert community through Tucson’s creative food culture.” The arts and culture. “Our arts and culture festivals draw visitors from across the globe. Most notably, the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show—held annually for the last fifty years in February—is hosted at forty-five locations throughout Tucson.” Also, the Tucson Festival of Books takes place for two days every March on the University of Arizona campus, and is the 4th largest book fair in the US. Downtown Tucson’s El Presidio Park transforms into one of the largest free festivals in the country during the first weekend of May for the Tucson Folk Festival, featuring regional musicians on five stages. My other favorite annual events include the Tucson Rodeo, Tucson Modernism Week, and the All Souls Procession. The school spirit. “This is Wildcat country…Bear Down, Arizona!”

PLANTING LO CA L R O OTS In Boulder’s forward - thinking cannabis space, Chris Woods’ leading voice stands out. One of the godfathers of the industry, and founder of Bouder- based Terrapin Care Station, Chris’ leadership in the sector dates back to the “Wild West” days before licensing. Fifteen years later, Chris represents one of the few remaining original cannabis companies to stay privately owned. Chris realized early on that if he were to maintain an independent spirit and have Terrapin punch above its weight, then he would need to do what other entrepreneurs have been unable to do; maintain his mission- driven leadership of Terrapin. This allows Chris and his team to plant local roots while supporting thriving communities. Terrapin has contributed more than $1.3 million to over thirty local nonprofits in keeping with this mission. Today, Terrapin operates six vertically integrated dispensaries in Colorado and has taken its brand national with operations in Pennsylvania. Over the life of the company, Terrapin has operated in five states, while also acquiring licenses in two others. What separates Chris from the entrepreneurial pack is prudence, allowing him to expand only where it makes sense and where Terrapin can align with community goals. At the heart of Terrapin is a desire to serve local communities. Terrapin Care Station and Chris make Boulder their home and workplace, with two locations in Boulder and four more across the Front Range. In pursuing our goal to bring together the best of Boulder’s locally owned businesses, we found that not all cannabis companies are equal. Terrapin invites you to visit their Boulder flagship on Folsom Street and experience local roots. When you shop locally, you’re shopping with your heart and with pride.
