COSTA MESA PARKS AND COMMUNITY SERVICES

New Year – New Activities – New Goals! Whether you’re looking to make new friends, find a new hobby, hit new strides in your fitness, or advance your skills in an activity that you already enjoy, the City of Costa Mesa has what you’re searching for! The Parks and Community Services Department has multiple class and program offerings for this winter that will meet your needs and your goals for the 2017 year. Costa Mesa youth are fortunate to have so many options to choose from. Our classes offer both physical activities as well as educational opportunities. We are continuing the Happy Feet Running Club that focuses on becoming healthier and stronger while having fun. In addition, youth basketball and youth cheer are also returning for even more enjoyment. We will be offering language and arts classes that are suitable for children of all levels. Teens will be excited to hear that the Teen Center program’s special events will be continuing throughout the year. This means more movies, more parties and more art! Make plans to attend our Valentine’s ‘Hearty Party’ on February 10 – it’s a can’t-miss experience! We know our adults are looking forward to the pool re-opening so that they can continue with their lap swim routines. The wait is almost over as the renovation is scheduled to be complete by mid-January. In the meantime, don’t forget to check out the Downtown Recreation Center’s open gym program that allows you to sharpen your basketball and volleyball skills, dance, or take yoga and boot camp-style classes. Also, check out our new futsal (indoor soccer), basketball and softball leagues. With so many activities to participate in who could resist joining in the Costa Mesa Community Run to prepare! Costa Mesa seniors have nearly unlimited recreational opportunities. The Costa Mesa Senior Center is the place to be if you’re looking for something new. Fitness, computer, and enrichment classes are all in addition to card and domino games being held weekly, bi-monthly movie days, and on-going trips, how could anyone get bored? Bring a friend or make one there – there’s so much to enjoy! Membership is free for ages 50+! The New Year invites us to better and challenge ourselves, but I’d like to invite you to do so by joining in the community we’ve all built. With so many activities, you’ll be able to keep up with your goals all year long. Please join your neighbors in participating in any of these activities our City has to offer our youth, adult, and senior communities. Brett Eckles, Chairman

“The Parks and Community Services Department is committed to enhancing the community through the delivery of innovative recreational programs, quality parks and facilities and services that promote social, physical and emotional well-being. “

Pesticides and Fertilizer  Pollution: Pesticides that are designed to be toxic to pests can be equally lethal to marine life.  Solution: Never use pesticides or fertilizer within 48 hours of an anticipated rain event. Use only as much as is directed on the label and keep it off driveways and sidewalks. Dirt and Sediment  Pollution: Dirt and sediment can impede the flow of stormwater and negatively impact habitat as it travels through waterways and deposits downstream. Pollutants can attach to sediment, which transports to waterways.  Solution: Protect dirt stockpiles by covering them with tarps or secure plastic sheets to prevent transport by wind or rain. Metals  Pollution: Metals and other toxins present in car wash water can harm important plankton, which forms the base of the aquatic food chain.  Solution: Take your car to a commercial car wash where the wash water is captured and treated. Pet Waste  Pollution: Pet waste carries bacteria through our watersheds is eventually washed into the ocean. This poses a health risk to swimmers and surfers.  Solution: Pick up after your pets!

Trash and Debris  Pollution: Trash and debris enters waterways by wind, littering and careless maintenance of trash receptacles. Trash on roadways also enters the storm drain system and flows into the ocean.  Solution: Don’t litter and ensure trash containers are covered. Litter prevention is much more efficient than attempting to treat trash in stormwater discharges. Come to one of Orange County’s many locations for Coastal and Inner-Coastal Cleanup Day, held in September. Motor Oil/Vehicle Fluids  Pollution: Oil and petroleum products from our vehicles are toxic to people, wildlife and plants.  Solution: Fix any leaks and keep the maintenance up on your car. Use absorbent material such as cat litter on oil spills, then sweep it up and dispose of it in the trash. Recycle used motor oil at a local Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center. To report a spill, call the Orange County 24-hour Water Pollution Problem Reporting Hotline at 1.877.89.SPILL. For more info, visit costamesaca.gov/waterquality

An Orange County park open year round, the Talbert Nature Preserve has nearly 2,000 acres of scenic landscape, perfect for Costa Mesa locals and visitors that want to get outside. A great spot for hiking, biking, jogging or even just walking the dog (yes, the preserve is dog friendly!), the preserve acts as a botanical garden, wildlife refuge and exceptional recreational facility all at once. Picnic tables at the end of the base of a trail from Fairview Park is where you’ll likely find Costa Mesa locals spending time on the weekends. Talbert Nature Preserve is located on Victoria Street in Costa Mesa between Pacific Avenue and the Santa Ana River. The Talbert Nature Preserve is divided into two sections; the North Talbert Preserve is roughly 91.5 acres and the South Talbert Preserve is approximately 88.5 acres.

 It’s amazingly well-maintained in a peaceful setting across from the Costa Mesa Tennis Center

 Motor skills challenges set this park apart from others – there are pedestals to navigate, balance beams, platforms, standing pedal pushers, and tunnels

Wetlands

Bark Park 890 Arlington Drive | Costa Mesa | (714) 754-5041 Bark Park is an area where the public can take their dogs and legally allow them to run and play off-leash. With nine different trails stretching over nearly 3 miles (6 miles round trip); the Talbert Nature Preserve is one of few open space areas left in Central Orange County. With only 100 feet in elevation, the Talbert’s trails are great for beginner hikers or families with younger children. Hikers can continue through the Nature Center to reach the Santa Ana River Bicycle Trail, which continues on to the Pacific Ocean and nearby Newport Beach. Wildlife in the preserve consists mostly of birds, including great, snowy egrets and mallard ducks. You might also see small animals like squirrels and rabbits – and beware of coyote visits at night.

DOG LICENSE APPLICATION Why should I license my pet? The Law It is the law! Both the State of California and the City of Costa Mesa require residents to license their pets.

Your Pets Ticket Home Pets that are licensed have a better chance of being returned to their owners.

Animal Safety and Wellbeing Licenses help enforce rabies vaccines and encourage the spaying and neutering of pets, which greatly benefits your pet and the community.

Be a Responsible Pet Owner

Senior Citizen (62+) Discounted Fees

Here are some reasons why you should adopt your next pet.

Requirements

TO SAVE A LIFE! Not just one, but two lives. When you adopt you save the life of the pet you take home and help make room for another one to be cared for. IT’S A GREAT DEAL! Most adoption fees already include the costs of microchipping, spaying/neutering and up-to-date vaccines. VARIETY! Animal shelters have a wide variety of pets to choose from, more than 25 percent of which are purebred. If you have a particular breed in mind, check both your local shelter and breed specific rescue groups. SUPPORT ADOPTION! Adopting stops the exploitation of animals. If you do decide to purchase a pet, make sure you find a reputable breeder. The breeder should allow you to meet both parents of your soon to be pet, and be able to provide you with the animal's complete health history. IT’S GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT! Adopting helps combat overpopulation. Over 80 percent of animals in shelters are there because of owner neglect. Adopting is ecofriendly and recycled pets are the best kind!
