Provenance: Purchased from Fabergé by Her Imperial Majesty Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna. In Fabergé’s ledgers, described as being in the Louis XVI style, with green and opalescent enamel. It was acquired by Her Imperial Majesty Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna on 3 July 1902 for 240 roubles. The Tsarina gave it to her eldest sister Princess Victoria of Battenberg, later Victoria Mountbatten, Marchioness of Milford Haven, born Princess Victoria of Hesse. Thence by family descent.

Rare and unusual trefoil-shaped Fabergé crystal clock. The crystal panel is centred with a circular silver-gilt and white enamelled dial with Arabic numerals, set with a bezel of green enamelled laurel with diamonds and backed with a scroll gold strut. Attached to the dial are three smaller ribbontied laurel wreaths mounted with red cabochons and diamonds.

A similar rock crystal clock from the collection of Frank Sinatra was auctioned at Christie’s, New York, December 1, 1995, lot 56.

Large and very rare Fabergé nephrite desk clock in neo-rococo style with movement by H. Moser & Cie. An asymmetrically cut translucent nephrite panel is set within a silver rocaille border and centred by a black and white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and openwork gold hands. The dial is surrounded by an opulent Louis XV-style silver mount cast and chased with scrolls and flowers. The top of the composition portrays an amorous couple: a young musician entertaining a lady with a lap dog. The piece is supported on a scrolled silver strut and comes with a fitted leather case.

A varicoloured gold and silver-mounted square clock resting on its point, the surface enamelled in translucent green over concentric engine-turning applied with ribbon tied garlands of flowers, the bezel set with seed pearls, the border with a chased leaf motif, the circular strut with straight legs and applied scroll motifs, engraved with Cyrillic inscription and a feathered arrow.

Rare and unusual gold and silver-gilt square desk clock enamelled in translucent pale blue over a guilloché ground and applied with gold foliate scrolls and four rosettes; further within a white guilloché enamel frame painted with interlaced green laurel garland and red ribbon; the white enamel dial with black Arabic numerals with gold openwork hands and a pearl bezel.

The clock comes from the collection of Farouk I, King of Egypt (1936-1965), one of the twentieth century’s most prolific Fabergé collectors. It was part of his extensive collection and among the pieces seized by Nasser’s Republican government and subsequently sold in March 1954 in Cairo.

Rectangular desk clock with blue guilloché enamel and a silver beaded border; the bezel with a silvergilt beaded rim; the white enamel dial inscribed with black Arabic chapters and gold openwork hands.

The clock was originally purchased by Nancy Leeds, a wealthy American heiress eventually known as Princess Anastasia of Greece and Denmark (1878 – 1923). Mrs. Leeds was one of Fabergé’s most prolific customers in London. Her collection included clocks, cigarette cases, animal carvings, flower studies and frames.

Mrs Leeds first married George Worthington and then William Bateman Leeds (1861-1908), known as the ‘tinplate king’ and owner of ‘Rough Point’ the former Vanderbilt mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. Celebrated for her extravagance, she resided at 41 Grosvenor Square when in London and entertained royalty with the aid of Lady Paget who acted as social sponsor. In 1920 she married Prince Christopher of Greece (1888-1940). The following year her son, William B. Leeds, Jr., married Princess Ksenia of Russia, daughter of Grand Duke Georgi Aleksandrovich.

A carved nephrite cover, hinged, framed with two-colour gold border chased with laurel leaves, further decorated with enamelled Russian and French tricolour flags and set with four large diamonds at the corners; the upper-left corner applied with gold and enamel coat-of-arms of St Petersburg encrusted with rose-cut diamonds, surrounded by coats-of-arms of Schlüsselbourg, Tsarskoe-Selo, Peterhof, Yambourg, Novaya Ladoga, Gdov, and St Petersburg. The folio contains a presentation letter to the French President, in French, signed in 1897 by the nobility representatives from St Petersburg and the seven local districts, finely decorated with medallions and arabesques, also with a note in Russian. The French President at the time was FrancoisFélix Faure (1841-1899). He contributed greatly to Franco-Russian relations and helped solidify the alliance with Russia by receiving Nicholas II and the Tsarina in Paris in October 1896.

The President’s reciprocal voyage to Russia took place in August 1897. The nephrite folio and the document were presented to the French President on his arrival in St Petersburg. The letter expresses gratitude to the President for his warm welcome to the Russian Navy in 1893 and the dazzling reception prepared for the visit of Tsar Nicholas II and the Tsarina to France in 1896.

An ovoid shape nephrite bowl in Neo-Renaissance taste with a red gold openwork handle finely decorated with scrolls enamelled in white opaque, translucent red and green, further applied with three turquoise flower heads and surmounted with a large table-cut sapphire and four diamonds, each in a raised black enamel collet, the underside of the handle finely engraved with foliate strapwork and finished with two scroll supports.

The Neo-Renaissance style is restricted in Fabergé’s oeuvre to a small number of showpieces, all by the chief workmaster Mikhail Perkhin, such as the Renaissance Egg presented by Alexander III to his wife Maria Fyodorovna in 1894, now in the Fabergé Museum in St Petersburg, the rock crystal vase from the collection of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II and the rock crystal charger from the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg. A similar kovsh in nephrite is in the Treasury Room

Provenance:

In 1935, the bear appeared in a photograph of the collection of Fabergé animals of Lady Zia Wernher, a morganatic daughter of a member of the Russian Imperial family. Most likely, the bear belonged to Lady Juliet Duff who exhibited a Fabergé ‘obsidian bear’ in the London exhibition of Russian Art in 1935.

Both pieces are stamped as shown on the interior of the detachable back plates of the cutters.

The hinged swivel-shaped handle with deep green guilloché enamel on both sides with neo-classical gold ornaments. The mirror design is illustrated in Golden Years of Faberge, Drawings and Objects from the Wigström Workshop by Ulla Tillander-Godenhielm (Alain de Gourcuff, 1999). The sketch with the mirror appears on page 73, accompanied by a handwritten number 12536 and the date 21/VII 1911.

A rare and important kovsh, the carved rock crystal body engraved with delicate strapwork and floral garlands, the prow features a chased and engraved gold mount set with a single cabochon ruby and diamonds, a gadrooned gold stem supports a finial of chased acanthus enclosing a diamond-set pinecone, the chased gold handle shaped as elaborate foliate scrolls and set with bands of diamonds and six cabochon rubies, centred with a large octagonal portrait diamond.

The tapering fluted cylindrical body of the glass vessel is fitted with a wide silver rim and flat hinged cover; the handle is formed as a naturalistically cast and chased lizard and subtly attached to the glass. The lizard’s arched back forms the body of the handle, while its splayed feet secure the handle to the silver lid and the glass base.

Cut-glass decanters with silver-gilt mounts, the cylindrical necks chased with acanthus leaves above girdles of laurel leaves, the hinged covers with narrow Greek key pattern border and pine cone finials atop an acanthus leaf quatrefoil, the spouts engraved with monogram MBT, applied below the necks with laurel leaf swags, the angular handles with applied ribbons and further decorated with three projecting buds.

Silver dinner plate with the rim chased with an oak leaf wreath, and the cavetto engraved with an Imperial doubleheaded eagle; inscribed on the reverse in Cyrillic: “August 16, 1874-1899 from Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna”.

Grand Duchess Xenia (1875-1960) was the elder daughter of Tsar Alexander III and sister of Tsar Nicholas II.

Silver and silver-gilt flatware set in Louis XVI-style with ribbon-tied reeded stem, comprised of 120 pieces. The end of the spoon with the ribbontied rim. Each piece incised with a coat of arms (shield with three lilies and a deer, surmounted by a military helmet with flags and a deer above). The set contained in a large original oak fitted hinged case with a lock, lined with creamcoloured suede. Inside the lid is stamped with a black double-headed eagle and a text ‘K. Fabergé, Moscow, S. Petersburg, Odessa’. Large pieces stamped in full K. Fabergé with the Imperial Warrant, and smaller items are marked with the initials KF.

20-piece silver-gilt tea set comprising a teapot, a sugar bowl, a creamer, 12 teaspoons, a tea strainer, a lemon fork, sugar tongs, and a sugar shovel. Silver-gild on stippled ground, decorated in multicoloured shaded cloisonné enamel with floral pattern. Contained in the original hinged oak fitted case, lined with satin and velvet. Stamped with the Fabergé trademark on the inside of the lid with the Imperial warrant.

The set comprises seven pieces: teapot, covered sugar bowl, cream jug, sugar sifter spoon, lemon fork, caddy spoon, and sugar tongs. Contained in the original wooden fitted box lined with dark red velvet with matching silk in the recesses; the cover lined with oyster silk printed with the retailer’s trademark: ‘K. FABERGE, MOSCOW, S.PETERSBURG’ in Cyrillic with Imperial Warrant above. The pieces are of squat ovoid form with shaded polychrome cloisonné enamel eagles amidst profuse foliage and flowers in pink, green, yellow, foiled red, and shades of blue on a cream ground, edged with turquoise enamel bead borders, mother-of-pearl insulators, and finials, richly gilt interiors.

Silver vase of tapering form with gilt interior, chased to the front with a vacant decorative cartouche with stylised cornucopia at the base , the lower body chased with a frieze of leaf motifs on the ground of raised beads and edged with bands of bead and scroll motifs, these motifs repeated   on a chased band around the circular foot, the neck rim with a band of cabochon-set garnets centring rectangular panels decorated with stylised berries, the domed cover with stylised, scroll-chased finial.

Silver table bell realistically cast and chased as a miniature replica of the “Tsar Bell” in the Moscow Kremlin. Its surface shows all the details of the original Tsar Bell from the Kremlin including the part that cracked and fell off. Tsarina Anna appears on one side, her dress is overstamped with a Russian double-headed eagle. The upper part of the bell contains two oval icons of Christ surrounded with seraphs.
