Classroom Resource Enrichment Grants

Classroom Resource Enrichment Grants (CREGs) aim to provide supplementary funding for teachers with limited classroom budgets and demonstrated need in the Arabic classroom, QFI will award Classroom Resource Enrichment Grants (CREGs) throughout the 20172018 academic year. CREGs are intended to provide sustainable resources and materials, ideally to serve the classroom for multiple years. CREGs will be awarded quarterly throughout the academic year, and teachers are encouraged to reapply if they did not receive one the first time.

Scarlett Middle School Dearborn, Michigan | Teacher: Shaima Basuni This year, Scarlett Middle School was awarded a CREG grant, which it used to purchase a set of doumbeks to supplement its Arabic language classroom activities by adding a musical element. While music is an an integral part of learning a language, Scarlett Middle School’s students have the chance to engage with it directly.

The doumbeks are very helpful for my third grade students for learning about Arabic music, and to experience playing an Arab musical instrument outside of the Arabic classroom. The impact of the grant is huge. This is the first class in the whole district to implement Arabic music and instruments. Next school year they will also have an assembly for the whole school and the community to show off their talents using the doumbeks. Other schools in the district are witnessing the result of connecting Arabic Language and Music, and If the project is successful, the district’s future plan is to make it a requirement for all third graders to play the Arabic drums as part of their music curriculum.

Peck Elementary Chicago, Illinois | Teacher: Mariam Ali Peck Elementary used its CREG to bolster the cultural element of its Arabic program, showcasing the diverse array of traditional clothing and food throughout the region. This included the setup of a traditional Arabic majlis as a study area in the classroom. Through the grant, students not only learned about Arab culture themselves, but were able to showcase what they learned to the entire school.

Through this grant, my students were able to learn about and understand the diversity of the Arab world. They were able to try wearing different types of traditional outfits, and present them in a fashion show which they enjoyed very much. They are looking forward to presenting another fashion show to a new audience at Peck Elementary’s art gala. We also researched and learned about different types of Arab foods. We purchased enough food to feed all of my one hundred and twenty students, their teachers and attending parents. The food consisted of chicken kebabs, rice, hummus, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, falafel, pita bread and baklava.

The Elizabeth Learning Center Anaheim, California | Teacher: Arwa Gharaibeh This year, Scarlett Middle School was awarded a CREG grant, which it used to purchase a set of doumbeks to supplement its Arabic language classroom activities by adding a musical element. With the grant that I received from QFI, I was able to purchase supplemental classroom material such as the Arabian Sinbad Arabic learning box set, an Arabic Scholastic book box, and the Dino Lingo Arabic learning set, which includes flashcards, CDs, posters, and DVDs. Additionally, we purchased traditional attire for a Dabkeh performance, which we performed in front of an audience of 400. The clothes are being stored so we can use and share them again next year with the new incoming kindergarten teacher.

Lindblom Math and Science Academy Chicago, Illinois | Teacher: Fadi Abughoush Lindblom Math and Science Academy used its CREG funding to take its students on a cultural field trip, where they visited a mosque, a restaurant, and other local stores run by the local Arabic-speaking community.

I am a high school Arabic teacher working with students in the innercity. At our school, we only offer Chinese and Arabic as foreign languages. It is amazing to witness how many of my students have taken on the challenge of learning Arabic and are always looking for ways to further their knowledge of the language. I think that students should be able to discover more of the cultural aspect of the Arabic language. This grant helped fund a field trip to the Mosque Foundation and Al Bawadi restaurant. I took my Aber Virtual Exchange Class students on a field trip by bus to the Mosque foundation, where they listened to a small lecture from the Imam about the Arab community in the southside of Chicago and answered the students’ questions. After that we will walk around in the neighborhood where the students visited many local Arabic stores and practiced speaking in Arabic.

Qatar Foundation International awards Teacher Initiative Grants to enhance Arabic programs and promote excellence in the classroom. Arabic teachers working in U.S. public or public charter schools may apply for funding to purchase books and materials; host cultural events or workshops; take students on field trips; or attend professional development conferences.
