You can’t read an article about the labor force in general and manufacturing, in particular, that doesn’t reference the labor shortage. Covid exacerbated this, especially with a stream of Baby boomer early retirements (with an estimated 2.4 million Americans deciding to leave the workforce during the pandemic), but there are systemic issues that are more responsible for the labor shortage, and won’t go away, as Covid has.

Fertility rates play a role in our labor shortage. To maintain its population, fertility must stay at a “replacement rate” of 2.1 children per woman. America’s fertility rate has been declining for decades, and today it is 1.66—a level so low that legal immigration can no longer make up for the shortfall.

What can be done to alleviate this pain business owners and managers are experiencing? There is a model outside of the US, in Japan, that offers insights into how to help with this.

In the past decade, Japan has expanded its labor force by around 4.2 million even as its population has fallen by more than three million. To meet its labor needs, Japan found a way to engage three groups that had been under-represented in the country’s employee base, traditionally dominated by prime-age—25 to 54—men.

• Older workers. Japan understood that many older workers looked to find ikigai— translated as “purpose”—from their work. They found that more than 40% of Japanese workers in their early 60s wanted to continue working part-time after 65 and that more than 60% of employers were able to hire them. In response, Japan raised the eligibility age to 65, and they amended laws to require employers to provide opportunities for employees up to 70.

For older workers who want greater flexibility or a different line of work, the government set up a network of “Silver Jinzai” centers that offer retraining and placement services. At a given time, roughly 700,000 seniors are registered with one of the centers. Adjusted for population, this would be roughly equivalent to the U.S. discovering more than 1.8 million job-ready workers.

• Women. Increasing the number of female employees in Japan has required government support. Today, companies with more than 300 employees must report on their female labor force. And it’s working, as the labor-force participation rate among prime-age female workers in 2021 exceeded that of the U.S.

• Foreign workers. Japan has long had a training program for foreign workers from developing economies, and today this program provides workers for lowskill, low-pay roles in the Japanese economy. A 2018 law created a pathway for 260,000 to 345,000 guest workers across 14 industries.

Japan’s example shows how necessity can change attitudes. It’s important to note that government policy alone didn’t drive change. According to a 2019 survey, nearly 70% of Japanese firms had devised their own plans to tackle labor issues.

U.S. business must incorporate talent that has long been neglected. In the U.S., that means finding ways to employ workers who lack traditional credentials or who have been marginalized by such factors as poverty, substance abuse and criminal records. As in Japan, success for the business community will lie in promoting labor where it can be found today, not where it was in the past. First Light F-35 Helmet Test A Success

The Federal Reserve reported that industrial production in March rose 1.4%, returning to growth after an unseasonably stormy February knocked it down 2.6%. The report shows total industrial production rose 2.5% at an annualized rate during the first quarter of 2021 despite the losses endured in February by manufacturing, mining, and utilities companies.

Motor vehicles and parts production, which fell 10% in February, rose 2.8% in March but remained depressed by a persistent shortage of semiconductors. Most durable goods indexes rose between 2% to 3%.

The industrial production gauge includes productivity in three sectors: manufacturing, mining, and utilities. Manufacturing production (which excludes mining and utilities output) rose 2.7% in March after falling 3.7% the month before. Mining production improved 2.7%, while utility output fell 11.4% thanks to unseasonably warm March temperatures. Manufacturing output rose 1.9% at an annualized rate.

T.J. Davies Company, Inc. was started in 1965 by Thomas Davies. Tom originally named the company Deb-Sher Machine after his two daughters, Debra and Sherry. He later changed the name to T.J. Davies Company.

Soon after Tom finished his service in the United States Navy, he moved his family to Cleveland, Ohio, where he took a position with Swagelok, a well-established fittings manufacturing company. After working briefly at Swagelok, Tom’s parents gave Dad a small loan to start his company. Fred A. Lennon, Tom’s boss and founder of Swagelok, contracted with the new company to manufacture parts for them. After serving in the Vietnam War, Uncle Russell (one of Tom’s younger brothers) joined the company.

The company started as a “job shop,” making various products, including retention knobs for Mazak.

In August 2018, Tom passed away, leaving the business to the next generation. Although Tom is no longer here, the company’s values, mission, and vision remain the same. His daughters have been making strategic changes to grow the business. The first order of business was to purchase a much larger building so they would have room to grow; the move was completed in December 2021. Next, a new website was launched, updated branding, and a new 132page catalog. Collins Metal Finishing (CMF) opened its doors in 1968 in response to the plating needs of the burgeoning manufacturing scene at the time. It was the brainchild of businessman Robert Wilkinson and electroplater John Collins.

Over the years, CMF grew in both size and complexity, finding its niche in Anodizing and Electropolishing supplemented by a variety of similar, “less complex” services.

In the late 90s, John’s son, Mike, took over his position while Robert’s daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Chuck Garcia, took over his responsibilities.

Under the direction of these three, CMF left its original location— a shack built during the WWII era— and opened a 5,000 sq. ft. facility with modernized equipment and environmental protections.

Grandson of Kathy and Chuck, Gavin Garcia (now 26 years old), grew up often accompanying his grandfather to work. Intrigued with how the various processes worked and

enamored with the finished products, he began working at the shop the day after he turned 16. Gavin is pictured above. With brief stints working various other jobs, he always worked either full or part time at Collins until the time he graduated ASU in 2021. A couple of weeks later, he began training to take over for Chuck and Kathy amid Chuck’s battle with cancer. On May 10, 2022, Chuck passed away at the age of 69, two days shy of his 70th birthday.

From then on, Gavin began his tenure as Director, working to continue the legacy of his grandfather.

Over the course of the last year, with Gavin at the helm, CMF has introduced a new logo, modernized their system, and expanded their electropolish services by introducing a brand-new line to satiate the demand of the semiconductor and medical industries.

Virgin Galactic Prepared To Launch To The Edge Of Space

Virgin Galactic, the suborbital space tourism company founded by British billionaire Richard Branson, is gearing up for its first flight to the edge of space in nearly two years.

The flight will carry two pilots and a crew of four Virgin Galactic employees, the company announced. The company expects it will be the final test run before Virgin Galactic can open up rides for paying customers after years of promises, missed deadlines, and Branson selling off a huge chunk of his original stake in the company.

Virgin Galactic had appeared poised to begin commercial operations after it launched Branson to the edge of space alongside three crewmates in July 2021, a flight that came less than two weeks before Branson’s rival Jeff Bezos conducted his own flight to the edge of space.Several deadlines for the company’s expected return to space have passed. At one point in early 2022, the company was

targeting as early as last October for its first commercial missions. At the time Virgin Galactic went public in 2019, it had also been touting plans to start commercial service in 2020.

“We are making good progress on validating the enhancements made throughout 2022, and we remain on track for commercial service in Q2 of this year,” CEO Michael Colglazier told investors during the company’s latest earnings call on February 28, 2023.

Virgin Galactic conducted several test flights before Branson’s flight in 2021. But since then, the company has flown only one test flight of VSS Unity, which sent the space plane gliding through the air but did not attempt to fire up the plane’s rocket engine.

The company has sold about 800 tickets total, including 600 at prices ranging from $200,000 to $250,000 and 200 more at $450,000, which is the current ticket price.

Virgin Galactic is competing directly with Bezos’ Blue Origin in the suborbital space tourism business. Since Bezos’ flight in July 2021, the company has since completed five additional crewed flights to space. Blue Origin’s operations, however, have been on pause since an uncrewed flight of its New Shepard rocket exploded in September 2022.

Six people will be on board Virgin Galactic’s VSS Unity space plane for this month’s test mission. They include two pilots — CJ Sturckow and Mike Masucci — as well as four Virgin Galactic employees who will ride in the passenger cabin. Those four are Jamila Gilbert, a New Mexican native who works in the company’s internal communications; Chris Hume, a flight sciences engineer and the son of Jamaican immigrants; Luke Mays, an astronaut instructor and former NASA employee; and Beth Moses, the company’s head of astronaut training, who has joined two prior flights. Lockheed, Airbus Pick GE Engines for USAF Tankers

The proposal to supply the A330-based LMXT strategic tanker aircraft as an interim replacement offers domestic supply and logistics advantages for the U.S. Air Force.

Lockheed Martin, with input from Airbus, selected GE Aerospace’s CF6-80E1 propulsion system for the LMXT strategic tanker, which Lockheed has proposed as the “bridge” tanker, to fill the U.S. Air Force’s refueling needs until a replacement is chosen for the Boeing KC-46A tankers.

The USAF is deciding how to address its current refueling requirements – either by purchasing new LMXT aircraft or by continuing purchases of the KC-46A. It’s

not expected to conduct a full program replacement for its air refueling needs – referred to as the ‘Next Generation Air Refueling System – until 2035, or possibly later.

The LMXT is a based on the Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT), which is in service for multiple U.S. allies, including Australia, Canada, France, South Korea, the U.K., and several others.

Earlier, Lockheed and Airbus committed to manufacture the LMXT aircraft in Mobile, Ala., and Marietta, Ga., and Airbus will produce the LMXT’s aerial refueling boom system in western Arkansas.

Lockheed’s engine choice came in a competitive process, it said. Reportedly, the GE Aerospace design emerged ahead of the Rolls-Royce Trent 700, and Lockheed noted production of the GE engine will support over 3,000 U.S. jobs in more than 25 states. And, because CF6 engines are already in place on various USAF platforms, the LMXT is already part of a “supply chain and existing knowledge base that can translate to increased mission readiness rates,” according to Lockheed’s statement.

GE’s CF6 engine is an established design for wide-body aircraft. The CF6-80E1 variant was designed specifically for the A330, offering nearly 70,000 pounds of thrust and 15% greater fuel efficiency, according to GE Aerospace.

“America’s tanker fleet will play a critical role in meeting future mission requirements. This means the LMXT must use capable and proven technologies, such as the MRTT strategic tanker and GE Aerospace’s CF6 engine,” stated Lockheed Martin Aeronautics EVP Greg Ulmer.

Cactus Materials, A Tempe Semiconductor Maker Led By Former Intel Manager, Ready To Start Production

An Arizona semiconductor company has quietly started production at its new Tempe fabrication facility.

Cactus Materials, a 10-year old company led by CEO Rafi Islam, focuses on products for self-driving cars, 3D sensing for facial recognition, medical imaging and other markets.

Islam spent 12 years working at Intel Corp. and most recently held the title of processing engineering manager for the technology giant, according to his LinkedIn page. The company will operate two fabs across a 40,000-square-foot space in Tempe.

“We are entering a new era of bringing back manufacturing in technology to the USA. Silicon Valley advances and products are no longer only in the San Francisco Bay Area anymore,” Islam said in a statement.

Cactus Materials touted the emerging talent pool at local universities and the emerging ecosystem of the semiconductor industry as reasons to do business in Arizona. The White House has designated Phoenix as a workforce hub to help meet the demand for qualified and diverse talent in semiconductors, renewable energy and electric vehicles.

Over the next five years, Cactus Materials said it intends to make further upgrades at its facility and invest up to $300 million. The company had previously been

awarded grants from NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy and has applied for funding earmarked for the semiconductor sector through the CHIPS and Science Act.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Commerce opened the application process for the first round of CHIPS Act funding, which consists of $39 billion in incentives to build new factories and expand production nationwide.

More than 300 semiconductor companies across 37 states have applied for incentives for commercial fabrication, packaging, research and development. The CHIPS and Science Act has earmarked more than $52 billion toward revitalizing the nation’s semiconductor industry.

Dozens of semiconductor suppliers have made plans to operate in the Phoenix region and Pinal County.

U.S Solar Market Registers Best First Quarter in Industry History

The U.S. solar industry installed 6.1 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity and had its best first quarter in history, according to the US Solar Market Insight Q2 2023 report released. The record quarter was driven in large part by supply chain challenges abating and delayed solar projects moving forward.

Due in part to the strong first quarter numbers and a surge in demand from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Wood Mackenzie expects the solar market to triple in size over the next five years, bringing total installed solar capacity to 378 GW by 2028.

The IRA has also spurred a surge of new manufacturing announcements, with domestic module capacity expected to rise from fewer than 9 GW today to more than 60 GW by 2026. At least 16 GW of module manufacturing facilities are under construction as of the end of Q1 2023.

This quarter, the Biden administration provided some clarity on how the landmark law’s adder credits will be applied.

The law contains new credits that can be used in conjunction with the solar Investment Tax Credit, like the domestic content, energy communities, and low-income adder credits. In particular, the energy communities and low-income adder guidance will help drive solar and storage investment in underserved communities.

While the IRA has already catalyzed major investments in solar manufacturing and deployment, challenges remain with the implementation guidance for the domestic content adder credits in the near-term.

The utility-scale market rebounded from a difficult 2022 with a strong first quarter and a record 3.8 GW of installed solar capacity.

This quarter, more module importers were able to satisfy the documentation requirements under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA). This enabled more solar equipment to

make it to project sites and allowed the industry to build out its long pipeline of delayed projects.

Despite rising interest rates and economic headwinds causing customer hesitancy, the residential segment installed 1.6 GW of solar capacity in Q1 2023, a 30% increase from Q1 last year. The residential market segment is on track to add 36 GW of solar over the next five years, growing at an average annual rate of 6%.

The commercial market also had a record first quarter, with 391 MW installed, putting the segment on track for 12% growth in 2023. Meanwhile, the community solar segment installed 212 MW, a 13% decrease from Q1 2022 due in large part to ongoing interconnection challenges.

Manufacturing growth can be seen around the Phoenix metro area and beyond, from an LG battery plant in Queen Creek to the massive Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) semiconductor factory in north Phoenix to electric vehicle manufacturers cropping up in Coolidge and Casa Grande.

Yet another manufacturing project was announced in March by EVelution Energy with plans to open a cobalt processing facility in Yuma County for use in electric vehicle batteries. The plant will be the first of its kind in North America.

Arizona In Midst Of High-Tech Manufacturing Transformation

When manufacturing jobs began leaving the U.S. and heading overseas beginning in the 1980s, general wisdom concluded those jobs were gone for good.

But while U.S. manufacturing may not be what it was in its prime, it could be making a comeback thanks to a talented workforce, federal and state investments and Arizona’s wide-open spaces.

In Arizona, approximately 70% of projects in the Arizona Commerce Authority pipeline are manufacturing-related, including expansion of existing operations, and the

Arizona’s manufacturing boom owes its success to a talented workforce and a variety of state and federal investments.

The state, educational institutions and corporate partners encourage talent needed to fill jobs in the growing manufacturing sector.

Central Arizona College, for example, has partnered with LG to help train workers to staff the $2.8 billion plant in Queen Creek, which is expected to create 2,800 jobs.

A similar program exists through Estrella Mountain Community

College, training students to become semiconductor technicians.

“We need to grow these pipelines to get workers into this industry,” said Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, a vocal supporter of technical training programs.

Kelly has also been supportive of President Joe Biden’s various programs encouraging manufacturers to bring production back to the U.S. — programs such as the CHIPs and Inflation Reduction Act, which have boosted Arizona’s manufacturing sector as companies seek to benefit from federal grants and other investments.

While the U.S. manufacturing sector is still a long way off from what it used to be, Arizona’s manufacturing boom will help decrease dependency on foreign production, stabilizing U.S. supply chains, creating good-paying jobs and contributing billions of dollars to the economy. By

Raytheon wins fresh contract to build hundreds more Sidewinder missiles for US, foreign militaries

Raytheon’s Tucson-based Missiles & Defense division will be building hundreds of new Sidewinder aircraft missiles under a $263.72 million contract modification, one of several recent deals the company has landed in recent weeks.

The AIM-9X Sidewinder missile is a joint project of the U.S. Navy and Air Force, and Raytheon has been a part of it for more than two decades. This contract modification calls for Raytheon to build 571 of the rockets for the U.S. Air Force and Navy as well

as for foreign military customers. Work is expected to be finished in August 2026.

The Navy will receive 91 of the Sidewinders, while the Air Force will receive 257 and foreign customers will receive 223. Those foreign customers were not identified.

Raytheon describes the AIM-9X Sidewinder as a “triple-threat” missile that can be used on several different aircraft and can be used for air-to-air, surface-attack and surface-launch missions without modification. The new orders are for the Block II variant, which Raytheon says has improvements for handling and safety and electronics updates.

In addition to the tactical missiles, the contract modification also calls for delivery of 48 training missiles, and a large amount of support equipment such as containers, target detectors, guidance units and more.

Why International Companies Are Choosing To Invest In Arizona

Last year, Taiwan-based chip company Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing

Co. (TSMC) announced plans to expand its footprint in north Phoenix from $12 billion to an estimated $40 billion to build its massive U.S.-based semiconductor hub — one of the largest foreign investments ever made in U.S. history, and the largest ever made in the state.

The TSMC plan may be the biggest example of foreign investment in Arizona but it should come as no surprise that foreign investors have taken notice of Arizona, which is quickly emerging as a thriving hub for global commerce.

“We’ve come into a place where we’ve never been before in foreign direct investment,” Mackay said, adding that foreign investment in the state is now primarily focused on advanced manufacturing, especially semiconductors, batteries, electric vehicles and biotechnology.

Last year, expansion projects were announced by companies such as Switzerland-based Nestle, which announced a $675 million investment to build a factory in Glendale, and South Korean electronics giant LG Energy Solution, which invested $1.4 billion to build a high-tech battery facility in Queen Creek.

Foreign investors are attracted to the state for many of the same reasons domestic companies are flocking to Arizona: the state’s favorable regulatory environment, strategic geographic location, availability of land, amenable climate and a built-in talent pipeline to draw a skilled workforce.

Another big draw has been government programs aimed at strengthening U.S. supply chains by bringing high-tech manufacturing back to the states. The CHIPs Act, for example, was among the reasons TSMC decided to expand its Arizona operations, said Senator Mark Kelly, who championed the CHIPs Act and called the TSMC investment “a big win” for Arizonans.

Foreign investment isn’t just a boon for Arizona’s economy, it’s also a job creator. The TSMC fabrication plants (fabs) in north Phoenix alone will create 21,000 construction jobs and will employ an estimated 4,500 permanent workers. Today, foreign investment provides jobs for more than 133,500 workers in the state.

Experts anticipate recent highprofile investments will only make Arizona a more attractive destination for foreign investors.

A 30-year partnership with Goodyear shows how businesses can work with New Mexico’s national laboratories

In 1993, Sandia National Laboratories and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. signed an agreement to collaborate on research to help develop technologies used by the Akron, Ohio-based tire company. Thirty years later, researchers at the national laboratories put together a computer model to simulate tire noise in electric vehicles — the latest work in the two organizations’ three-decade-long partnership.

The agreement signed between the laboratories and Goodyear is called a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement, or CRADA. CRADAs allow technologies and research conducted at the laboratories — like the labs’ computational simulation technology, which models situations that are difficult to test in the real world — to boost private businesses.

“[Goodyear] would rather not do physical tests if they can do numerical tests,” said Gregory Bunting, Ph.D., the technical point of contact for Sandia’s partnership with Goodyear. “They would like

to do new designs and new capabilities without huge upfront costs, and use all of these capabilities that we’ve developed historically.”

But Goodyear isn’t the only company that has relied on research and technology at Sandia for its own development. Technology transfer and partnerships with private businesses are part of the labs’ mission, said Joel Sikora, a manager of technology partnership agreements at Sandia.

It’s one of the ways, he said, that Sandia can be a boost for New Mexico’s economy. “It excites everybody at the laboratory, the ability to be involved in something that isn’t mission related but that they can see in their day-to-day life,” Sikora added. “It’s a positive for both sides that way.”

There are some other laboratory programs that private businesses inside and outside of New Mexico can take advantage of, including CRADAs.

One is the Technology Readiness Gross Receipts initiative, which graduated from

a pilot program into a five-year initiative through a bill passed by the state legislature in March 2022. That program, abbreviated to TRGR, helps companies that have existing licenses or work agreements with Sandia or Los Alamos National Laboratories take their technologies to market with up to $150,000 in financial assistance.

Advanced hCMOS Systems, an Albuquerque-based startup formed in early 2022, is one local company that’s used the TRGR program. A report on the program notes other New Mexico businesses, such as Build With Robots, mPower Technology Inc. and Pajarito Powder, have participated in the TRGR initiative.

A sensor used in an ultrafast X-ray imager is inspected under a microscope at Sandia National Laboratories. Advanced hCMOS Systems wants to commercialize that imaging technology, and it’s received some support from the Technology Readiness Gross Receipts initiative to do just that.

Another is a program for New Mexico small businesses, funded by state gross receipts taxes, that devotes between $20,000 to $40,000 for laboratory researchers to support businesses’ needs.

“In talking with my peers at other labs, there are very few programs that I believe are as good, and certainly as mature, as what we have in New Mexico,” Sikora said. “So, there are a lot of really great opportunities for small businesses.” Businesses

ranging from large companies like Goodyear to nascent startups like Advanced hCMOS Systems can leverage different capabilities and technologies that already exist at the labs, Sikora said.

“We’re not here to compete with industry,” Sikora said. “We’re here because … there are complex problems that no one else is able to solve or require machines or — in the case of Goodyear — very specific physics codes.

Companies can request to partner with Sandia through forms on the labs’ website. Sikora said he and his team receive the requests and then point businesses to the right partners within the labs.

The cross-application of technological and research expertise can be a boon for private businesses — but it can help the labs’ own development, too.

Arizona On Track For Impressive Solar Industry Growth

The solar energy sector continues to gain strength in Arizona, with robust growth anticipated in the coming years, according to a new industry report. That outlook comes along with good news for the sector nationwide, according to the US Solar Market Insight Q2 2023 report released recently by the Solar Energy Industries Association.The latest data shows that the industry had its best first quarter ever, with 6.1 gigawatts of solar capacity added nationwide.

In Arizona, 6,457 megawatts of capacity was added to the grid during Q1, giving the state a No. 5 ranking in the nation for total megawatts installed, at 6,457 MW. The report projects that Arizona will rank No. 4 five years from now, with 10,651 MW installed by 2028.

Right now, solar makes up 9.82% of Arizona’s electricity, with enough capacity to power 984,047 homes. In 2022, $1.5 billion was invested into solar, helping to bring the total value of the solar market in the state to $16.5 billion. The price for solar installation has continued to go down as well, and in Arizona it’s 54% lower than it was a decade agot.

Currently, 368 solar companies operate in Arizona, the report found — with 76 manufacturers, 171 installers/ developers and 121 other companies. Those businesses

account for 8,278 jobs in the state.

Still some questions around solar industry credits

On the national level, the report found that supply chain challenges have tapered off and the federal Inflation Reduction Act’s incentives for the industry have started to kick in. However, questions about the credits remain for the industry and have prevented the law from having its full impact, the report’s authors said.

“As the Inflation Reduction Act begins to flex its muscle and drive demand, the U.S. solar and storage industry is eagerly awaiting further guidance on some of the most impactful pieces of the law,” said Abigail Ross Hopper, SEIA president and CEO, in a statement. “Timely, specific, and workable implementation guidance from the administration will have a major impact on our success in both the near and long-term.”

The report also indicated that the issues related to the credits, the fact that the U.S. lacks manufacturing capacity for crystalline silicon solar cells, and a lack of clarity on the rules for the residential market, combine to keep the law’s full impact from being felt so far.

Industrial Leaders See Tailwinds: Manufacturers Show Optimism

A new survey shows manufacturers see a path through the economic doldrums and remain more upbeat than other leaders about volatility and business conditions in 2025. The trends are Parker Hannifin Corp.’s friends. CEO Jennifer Parmentier said the company’s new multi-year goal of organic growth between 4% and 6% is within reach in part because of the manufacturing investment wave driven by electric vehicle and battery projects as well as the longer-term dynamics of electrification and aerospace growth.“We’re there when they’re prepping the land, we’re there when they’re building the factory and we’re there when they’re putting all the equipment in the factory,” Parmentier told analysts about the headline-grabbing projects planned or already underway.

Even though the Institute for Supply Management’s widely watched Manufacturing PMI index is on a seven-month streak of contracting, a lot of manufacturing leaders are entering the second half of 2023 confident about what’s beyond the

next quarter or two.They recognize the burden of higher interest rates, the weight of pandemic-era inventories that haven’t been worked down and the ongoing struggle to find qualified workers. The top priorities for many leadership teams are clear: Protect margins and, relatedly, improve operations—hence their investments in automation and other technological tools. But, according to a recent report from Forbes, manufacturers think they can get their arms around what’s needed to thrive in the coming years. The study, which focuses on sources of current and expected volatility, showed that manufacturing leaders are more optimistic than their peers across the economy.

While financial risks such as top-line growth and access to capital are expected to become more precarious among all of the 1,001 large-company executives surveyed between now and 2025, only 31% of industrial leaders see them being problems in two years versus 44% of all respondents. Similarly, today’s crucial pain points of talent and supply chains—57% of manufacturing leaders cite each as sources of volatility—are expected to quickly recede: Only 23% of manufacturing respondents expect labor to be an issue in 2025 (versus 43% among all respondents) and 29% (versus 41%) think

the supply chain will still be a headache then.

“Manufacturers tend to be more optimistic because they’ve seen this type of thing before,” said Andrea Meinardi, managing partner of the manufacturing group at Crowe. “They’ve had to reinvent themselves— often with small tweaks—but there’s never a steady state.”

How and Why to Welcome More Women to the Skilled Trades

Advocating for young girls and women to explore welding, machining, additive manufacturing and other industrials careers can benefit women and the companies that will employ them.

It looked like an erupting volcano, says Celia Reyes when describing watching her dad weld for the railroad and in their garage when she was a kid. When she decided to follow in her father’s footsteps in pursuing the same career path, she would be met with a number of challenges.

In a starting class of 150 students at Tulsa Welding School, Reyes was one of only two women; she later graduated with only 10 others from the class.

“I had a lot of people tell me in the class there, since there were so many guys, they’re like, ’What are you doing here? You’re not supposed to be welding. You’re supposed to be at home cooking and cleaning and having kids,’” she says. “I’m like, ‘No, I’m here to do what you do. And I’m here to learn.’” In the professional world, Reyes says she still had to prove herself to her colleagues, despite her training. “It was a struggle. Definitely. Since it’s such a male-dominant industry, you just have to keep on going.”

Regardless of the obstacles they may face, Reyes is on a path to show that women can have successful and fulfilling careers in the skilled trades. “It’s rewarding because you make good money, and it makes you feel good.”

According to the American Welding Society’s weldingworkforcedata.com, just 5% of welders are women. Reyes says running into another woman in welding is like seeing a unicorn.

So, how do encourage more women to get involved in these careers? Additionally, what can companies and women gain from increasing representation in skilled trades?

Chris hasn’t just perfected his God-given gift of precision manufacturing through his employment at several machine shops over the past 30+ years — in his words, he has learned nearly as much from teaching students.

In fact, while working full-time for a machine shop during the day and studying at Gateway Community College in the evenings 2 decades ago, Chris was offered a job at the college. Though his job offer was for a lab technician, Chris’ boss soon learned that Chris would be a superior instructor in the program, and this was the beginning of his teaching career.

Chris’ business life has always been extremely full, working full time and either going to class in the evenings or teaching, so it wasn’t difficult for him to make the decision to open his own machine shop.

His company, named Manna Integrated Technology, and shortened to MIT, was founded in 2012. Its name has a biblical reference. Manna is, according to the Bible, an edible substance which God provided for the Israelites during their travels in the desert during the 40-year period following the Exodus and prior to the conquest of Canaan. Chris says he selected this name for his company for a couple of reasons; he is a Christian living in the desert, and he was almost 40 years of age.

Today, MIT is a full-service machine shop, and the company manufactures, modifies, and repairs prototype and production parts for a wide variety of industries such as Industrial/ Commercial, Semi-Conductor, Firearms, Defense, Renewable Energy, and Offroad. MIT specializes in machining all materials such as stainless steels, titanium, tool steels, as well as other

metals such as aluminum, brass and plastics.

Today, their facility, at >5000 square feet, is equipped with the latest in Haas CNC machining technology. They have six vertical machining centers (4 & 5-axis capabilities), one Horizontal Machining center with a pallet pool, one CNC turning center with live tooling, and various other support equipment. Chris says they also have full 3D CAD and CAM capabilities and offer support in engineering and additive manufacturing.

In his early years of business ownership, and up to COVID, Chris managed his business while teaching at GateWay Community College then at the Western Maricopa Education Center, abbreviated to West-MEC. His schedule was grueling: take the children to school and then head to his shop, work there for several hours before heading over to West-MEC to teach until 6:30 pm, then head back over to his shop to work until well into the evening. In those years, it was a rare treat for his family to have dinner with Chris. Chris says, “I now have more time with my family and I can bring my kids up as the next generation of machinists.”

Chris Hansen, MIT’s Business Manager from Ellison Machinery, says, “Chris has been purchasing Haas machines from us since he opened for business. With his expertise, he

can machine on a mill or lathe, he is as expert at 5 axis machining as he is on a horizontal machine. But it wasn’t until he left teaching and MIT became his full-time endeavor, that he began purchasing larger and more elaborate machine tools.”

Bridgeman says, “I’ve worked with Haas machines for my entire adult life, and with all the Haas machines we have today, they hold up very well. We’ve had very little downtime with them — in fact our oldest 10-year-old Haas machine, a VF2-SS (SuperSpeed) Vertical Mill, is still going strong.”

Two years ago, in 2021, Chris upgraded his shop with a Haas VF4-SS, a 5 axis Vertical Machining Center.

Chris has long known that a horizontal machining center would be, in his words, a ‘game changer’, but he wasn’t prepared to make the investment until last year. The Haas EC 400 Horizontal Machining Center he recently purchased is equipped with 7 pallets and a 100 Tool Carousel. Hansen says, “Designed for high-volume production and unattended operation, the new Haas EC-400 is faster, more compact, more rigid, and more capable than ever before. It features a larger work envelope, faster rapids, full 4th-axis pallet indexing, and much better chip management.”

The Haas EC 400 acquisition has indeed been ‘a game changer’ for MIT. “We’re migrating a lot of work from the Haas VF4-SS to this workhorse, and it has totally eliminated the need for a 3rd shift”, he says. With the EC 400, MIT closes the business at 10 pm, and the horizontal machining center runs through the night.

Bridgeman adds, “The Haas EC 400 automates probing, tool breakage and making adjustments; we load the tombstones and when I go home at night, I can monitor progress remotely. There is literally no opportunity for downtime with our EC 400, because even when you are loading parts, the machine is still running other parts.”

Chris says that the difficulty finding employees was a key driver for his investment into the Haas EC 400 Horizontal Machining Center. “I am ready to order my 2nd machine”, he adds, “since this one has fundamentally changed our business.”

What else is MIT planning for? Chris says the company began the process of certifying to ISO 9001/ AS9100 Revision D, with an expected completion this year. He adds, “We are called on by our customers to do prototype / R&D parts that are often quite complex, and we do this well. But we are also ready to take on more production work, particularly since we are running lights out.”

Due in part to the strong first quarter numbers and a surge in demand from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Wood Mackenzie expects the solar market to triple in size over the next five years, bringing total installed solar capacity to 378 GW by 2028.

The IRA has also spurred a surge of new manufacturing announcements, with domestic module capacity expected to rise from fewer than 9 GW today to more than 60 GW by 2026. At least 16 GW of module manufacturing facilities are under construction as of the end of Q1 2023.

This quarter, the Biden administration provided some clarity on how the landmark law’s adder credits will be applied. The law contains new credits that can be used in conjunction with the solar Investment Tax Credit, like the domestic content, energy communities, and lowincome adder credits. In particular, the energy communities and lowincome adder guidance will help drive solar and storage investment in underserved communities.

The utility-scale market rebounded from a difficult 2022 with a strong first quarter and a record 3.8 GW of installed solar capacity. Maker Of Blimp-Like Hybrid-Electric Cargo Airship Taps Honeywell Phoenix For Generator

Phoenix-based Honeywell Aerospace will supply power for a blimp-like airship that is expected to handle heavy loads in less accessible areas for a variety of industries.

A 1-megawatt generator made by Honeywell was selected by Flying Whales Quebec — which is based in France and Canada — to be integrated into its new LCA60T hybrid-electric airship that is currently under development.

The Flying Whales craft is a 200-meter-long hybrid-electric vehicle able to carry 60 tons of cargo. It can load and unload from a stationary hovering position and was originally designed to carry renewable wood from remote areas. It is now conceived as a transport option that can move heavy loads at low cost with no ground constraints for a variety of logistical applications such as loading and unloading cargo ships or assisting in disaster zones.

Honeywell’s generator system was chosen for its power density and efficiency and its suitability for piloted and autonomous flight. It can also be used as a

motor without modifications for electric propulsion engines, Honeywell said. In the Flying Whales craft, the generator will be integrated with a gearbox and a turbine that uses jet fuel and sustainable aviation fuel. The generator will supply power to the electric engines in a system that works similarly to one in a hybrid-electric automobile.

“Honeywell’s 1-megwatt generator is a perfect fit for a transformational aircraft like the LCA60T,” Dave Marinick, Honeywell Aerospace president of Engines & Power Systems, said in a statement. “Our generator is four times as powerful as any other generator flying today, and at unmatched power density. We believe in creating a more sustainable future for aviation, and our work with Flying Whales is helping bring that future to life.”

The Phoenix company said its generator passed its first round of testing in May 2022, and said that its results have been more impressive

as testing has continued. The most recent tests in late 2022 revealed that the generator operated continuously at 1,000 kilowatts at 1.06 MVA (or 1MW) power levels, Honeywell said.

“This important collaboration completes and strengthens our Canadian consortium to develop and manufacture our high-power turbogenerator. Today, we are building in Canada the expertise and technological advancements for tomorrow’s aeronautics,” said Flying Whales CEO Arnaud Thioulouse.

Help From ASU, Could Help Chip Industry Attract More Workers

In addition to potentially speeding the development of more advanced chips and chip-making technology, Applied Materials Inc. planned $4 billion research-and-development center could help the semiconductor industry in another important way — by attracting desperately needed new workers.

Applied’s announcement this week of the new center, dubbed Equipment and Process Innovation and Commercialization, or EPIC, comes as the chip industry faces a significant labor shortage. Nationwide, plans to expand semiconductor facilities could create as many as 27,000 new jobs, according to research from Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology. But there aren’t enough students studying in chip-related fields to fill all those positions.

As part of Applied’s fanfare for EPIC this week, the Santa Clara-based company announced a partnership with Arizona State University, and its plans received endorsements from UC Berkeley and other prominent U.S. engineering schools.

Through the partnership with ASU and other colleges, academic experts will be able to conduct research at EPIC, which will be located in Sunnyvale, alongside people who work in the industry, Applied said. The company also plans to help schools develop their own “satellite” labs on their campuses with up-to-date equipment.

Such opportunities will likely generate excitement and interest among potential students, experts say. They could also help address one of the big shortcomings universities have faced in trying to train new chipmaking experts — such institutions often haven’t had the equipment needed for that job.

“It’s very exciting to see us taking a hand locally in bringing back some of this commitment to innovation and research,” said Heidi Eisips, an adjunct faculty member at San Jose State University.

To be sure, not all the jobs needed in the chip industry require advanced university degrees. Many prospective chip factory workers can get the training or certifications they need for such jobs at community colleges, Vice President Kamala Harris noted on May 22 in a discussion with chip industry executives at Applied’s Sunnyvale campus.

Raytheon Wins Fresh Contract To Build Hundreds More Sidewinder Missiles For US, Foreign Militaries

Raytheon’s Tucson-based Missiles & Defense division will be building hundreds of new Sidewinder aircraft missiles under a $263.72 million contract modification, one of several deals the company has landed in recent weeks.

The AIM-9X Sidewinder missile is a joint project of the U.S. Navy and Air Force, and Raytheon has been a part of it for more than two decades. This contract modification calls for Raytheon to build 571 of the rockets for the U.S. Air Force and Navy as well as for foreign military customers. Work is expected to be finished in August 2026.

The Navy will receive 91 of the Sidewinders, while the Air Force will receive 257 and foreign customers will receive 223. Those foreign customers were not identified.

Raytheon describes the AIM-9X Sidewinder as a “triple-threat” missile that can be used on several different aircraft and can be used for air-to-air, surface-attack and surfacelaunch missions without modification. The new orders are for the Block II variant, which Raytheon says has improvements for handling and safety and electronics updates.

In addition to the tactical missiles, the contract modification also calls for delivery of 48 training missiles, and a large amount of support equipment such as containers, target

detectors, guidance units and more.

Phoenix Named As One Of Five US Workforce Hubs Focused On Manufacturing Jobs

In the past few years, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has upped its investment in Phoenix to $40 billion, Intel has progressed on a $20 billion expansion in Chandler and a handful of battery manufacturers have made plans for the region such as South Korea-based LG Energy Solution’s $5.5 billion expansion in Queen Creek.

The Biden administration has been passing significant incentives for industries the U.S. is competing for including semiconductors, electric vehicles and energy. The Biden administration said it will work with local officials, employers, unions, community colleges, high schools and other stakeholders to create a talent pipeline specific to the region’s needs and to expand apprenticeship programs, career and technical education programs and supportive services for underrepresented students and workers.

The other four metros named as regional hubs include Columbus, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Baltimore and Augusta, Georgia; most of which have also seen significant expansions in different manufacturing sectors. In addition, 16 cities, including Tempe, were selected for a new Good Jobs, Great Cities Academy by the White House to launch workforce initiatives that will leverage local partnerships and upskill and reskill workers.

Wes was raised in Farmington, New Mexico and in the days when he was growing up, oil & gas were where the jobs were. Wes attended auto body classes through

his high school and found a road he liked, using his mind and hands to make something. After high school Wes moved from Farmington to Albuquerque where he worked full time as a mold tech and also went to school full time studying computer-aided design. making things with his hands and his mind. He became very good at both.

In the machine shop, Wes learned all of the ins and outs of a machine shop, and as time progressed, he was tasked with learning G codes to programming the CNC machine tools. This became an internship with Wes writing and reading G code like it was a story in a newspaper, and the end of the story was a finished machined part. This machine shop Wes worked in had all the latest machining equipment and all the latest metrology and tools for making aerospace parts. Wes learned more with a ‘hands on’ approach than he did sitting in a machining course classroom at the time. After looking back on the first few machine shops he worked in, his jump to a career in manufacturing was the right choice. Wes worked in a few other shops in Albuquerque before deciding to move to Arizona in 2010 where he landed a programming job at a large aerospace shop.

Wes’ passion and high-tech capabilities came in handy when his new employer chartered Wes with setting up a state of the art manufacturing facility that could run lights out, with horizontal and 5-Axis machining centers, loaded with mass quantities of cutting tools and an automated pallet changing systems. While employed at the aerospace machine shop, Wes worked with Bao Nguyen, an experienced and gifted machinist, who was the company’s mill lead.

Bao had grown up in Vietnam and came to the United States when he was 20 years of age. Bao’s father had served in the army in South Vietnam, and as part of the Indochina Migration and Refugee Assistance Act signed by Congress in 1975, Bao and his entire family were assisted in their immigration to the USA.

When Bao came to the US, he didn’t have a background in machining. Interestingly, like Wes, Bao first embarked upon a career in automotive technology, where he studied at Glendale Community College. While enrolled in the program, Bao realized he didn’t like automotive technology, and he felt he would better enjoy machining. Bao credits owner Joe Waltek of Waltek Manufacturing, where he remained employed for 6 years, with having taught him about all facets of precision manufacturing. When Bao left Waltek Manufacturing, he met Wes at the large machine shop in the valley.

As they worked together, a mutual respect was born and grew to the point where they were talking with each other about starting their own precision machine shop. Bao says, “Owning my own business was truly going to be my American dream.” How fortunate that Wes and Bao have very supportive families - Wes’s wife Katie and 3 children and Bao’s wife Donna, also with 3 children – enabling the two to pursue the American dream of business ownership.

Tech Five is Launched

Wes and Bao launched Tech Five Machining in 2016 purchasing three main machine tools, one of them being a 5-Axis machine. Bao says, “While we were interacting with many machine shops in our previous employment, we recognized that a good percentage of them didn’t have 5 -Axis machining, and we believed that Tech Five Machining could fill a void in the market.”

Wes said, “From the time we launched the business we have always been in the black, never in the red, and sales have grown year over year since. We didn’t have a professional salesperson so we depended on word of mouth to grow the customer base. We would invite a new customer into our shop, show them how we were going to take care of them with our top name brand machine tools, state of the art metrology, and very progressive technology and they would tell their friends.”

Strong business growth has allowed Tech Five to buy more advanced brands of

Kris Tvedt, owner of The Supercharger Store and his employee, Deana Kelly, run a machine shop specializing in semicustom supercharging engines with centrifugal superchargers — from 3000 HP race car engines to 400 to 1000 HP high performance street cars to 80 HP side by side UTVs.

The Supercharger Store clearly makes some cool parts, particularly if you are into racing. What makes this company really outstanding, given the complexity of the parts they make, is that neither Kris nor Deana had any experience in machining when they first started.

They aren’t machinists but between the 2, there are 3 engineering degrees – Kris has a bachelors and master’s in mechanical engineering, both earned at the University of Arizona. Deana has a degree in chemical engineering, earned at Arizona State University.

Both employer and employee share a passion for racing, and it is actually at a race car event where the two met, and Deana made the decision to join Kris at The Supercharger Store. “I got tired of sitting in a cubicle all day”, Deana says.

The company wasn’t founded by Kris. Rather, he purchased the business after working at a number of companies, all in Tucson, including Hughes Aircraft, Raytheon, Automated Tooling Systems, Allied Signal (now Honeywell), Vanguard Automation, and Kaman Aerospace. He holds a patent for “Fixed-Source Array Test for Calibration of SAL Seeker” (You’ll have to ask him more about what this means).

The Supercharger Store has been in business since 2003, and in 2015, Kris purchased it. Today, the company builds semi/custom power adders for race cars, supercharger kits for the hobby market, and resells superchargers for modern cars. When Kris bought the business, all manufacturing was outsourced. “We ran the business outsourcing for the first couple of years but found that we had to buy parts in larger quantities than we needed as the needs of the market quickly change and we would end up with lot of excess inventory”, Kris says.

Kris made the decision to purchase his first CNC machine. He was at a friend’s local shop visiting when Richard White, owner of White’s Niche Products (WNP), came by to check on his customers’ Milltronics machines. Kris and Richard got to talking, and Kris made the decision to purchase

his first CNC machine, the Milltronics VM5020GP.

Two years ago, Kris added a 2nd Milltronics machine to the business, a Milltronics SL12, a heavy-duty cast iron slant bed lathe. Richard says, “The Milltronics SLII Series machines feature robust true slant bed castings, linear motion guide roller ways, direct coupled ball screws, and the 9000 Series control, and they are ideal for production.”

“Today, we’ve gone from buying most components to machining almost everything, and the accuracy and repeatability is phenomenal”, Kris says, adding, “Once we get our recipe perfected, the surface finishes on our products are outstanding.” The company has made some upgrades to its Milltronics VM5020, including adding 4th axis capabilities as well as probing. What’s next? Kris says, “We are looking for ways to take more full advantage of the Milltronics machines we have, and we are looking for lights out solutions.”

Futuro Houses sells first UFO house kit to customer in Roswell, NM

US Lighting Group Inc. is shipping the first kit to build one of its UFO-style houses to — wait for it — Roswell, near the U.S. military base that has long been associated with sightings of unidentified flying objects.

The Ohio-based maker of Cortes Campers travel trailers and Fusion X Marine speedboats has sold one of its Futuro Houses LLC shell kits to a customer near Area 51, the company said in a statement.

Sales of Futuro Houses kits and Cortes Campers trailers are expected "to drive record sales this year and next," said Anthony Corpora, CEO and president of US Lighting, in the statement.

US Lighting Group reported sales of $1.1 million for the year ended Dec. 31, up more than 16 times from $67,000 in 2021. The company that sold its first Cortes Camper in 2022 reported a loss of $9 million, or 9 cents a diluted share, last year.

US Lighting is beginning by selling kits for the houses that can be

customized for buyers or distributors, Corpora said.

"In the future, we will sell fully equipped, selfsustaining homes that are functional as well as aesthetically designed," he said.

US Lighting makes its UFO houses out of carbon fiber core material and molded fiberglass instead of wood, so they are easy to transport and assemble, Corpora said.

These materials also make the houses durable and "impervious to mold, mildew, rot, rust or decay," he said.

Once assembled, Futuro House shells offer 600 square feet of space, making them a fit for off-grid or conventional housing, businesses and rental opportunities, US Lighting said.

The company is developing a dealer network and direct-to-consumer marketing channels to sell the house kits, and eventually finished houses that include interior walls and appliances. In March, CEO Corpora said US Lighting plans to sell the shell kits for $179,500 and finished houses for $279,500.

Blue Origin, Lockheed Martin Team Wins $3.4B NASA Moon Lander Contract

Blue Origin, which recently opened its Phoenix metro office, and Lockheed Martin Space have joined forces to win a $3.4 billion contract to build a second, reusable lunar landing system for NASA that will ferry astronauts between a waiting spacecraft and the surface of the moon.

The space agency’s selection ends a two-year lobbying effort by the National Team, led by Jeff Bezos’ Kent, Washingtonbased Blue Origin, to have its lander included in NASA’s Artemis moon missions.

NASA had previously selected Elon Musk’s SpaceX to build a lander slated to land the first Artemis astronauts — and the first woman — on the lunar surface as soon as 2025.

The space agency awarded a second lander system contract to encourage the participation of other aerospace industry partners and spur more innovations to help establish a lasting presence on and around the moon, said Bill Nelson, NASA administrator. The lander will fly astronauts from a NASAfunded outpost in lunar orbit, known as the Gateway, down to

the moon’s surface and then back.

Blue Origin’s system, dubbed the Blue Moon lander, is being designed to carry four astronauts and 20 tons of cargo to the surface for missions. Developing the lander for the first missions will cost close to $7 billion, possibly more, based on the public-private model NASA is pursuing.

Industry partners will invest at least as much of their own money as NASA will pay toward the lander, said John Couluris, head of Blue Origin’s lunar lander program, who estimated Blue Origin will contribute more than $3.4 billion.

Blue Origin opened its new Phoenix facility in April. About 100 people have been hired for the Phoenix office. Blue Origin expects to hire hundreds more to fill positions in engineering, mission design and software for launch vehicle and space system programs.

Blue Origin and Lockheed Martin Space have worked together on designs of lunar lander systems since 2019. The National Team winning the lander award includes Boeing Co., building the docking systems; Draper Labs, designing navigation and avionics; Pittsburghbased Astrobotic building cargo storing and Honeybee Robotics designing cargo offloading systems. Jefferson County-based Lockheed Martin Space is building a spacecraft that’s separate from the actual landing craft. It’s a vehicle known as the Cislunar Transporter, that will fuel and refuel the Blue Moon lander in space.

The National Team’s 52-foottall Blue Moon is scheduled to land astronauts on the fifth Artemis program mission in 2029.

Lockheed Martin Space is already the prime contractor building the Orion capsules, deep-space spaceships that NASA will use on all of its missions flying astronauts

Elon Musk’s company proposed using the Starship spacecraft it’s developing to serve as the landing craft that astronauts board at the Gateway.

NASA had said it would award two lander contracts from among three bidders then, and later pick which of the two lander finalists to use on the Artemis III mission that will return U.S. astronauts to the moon’s surface.

Instead, citing limited funding from Congress, NASA selected only SpaceX’s lowest-price proposal over the other bidders. The National Team’s proposal was said to cost NASA several times more than what SpaceX proposed.

Bezos’ company tried unsuccessfully to reverse the space agency’s decision. NASA, after securing more lander funding from Congress, opened bidding for a second lander in September.“We want more competition,” Nelson, a former senator who flew aboard NASA’s Space Shuttle, said. “We want two landers. Hit with a Price Increase? Seven Tips for Negotiating with Suppliers

Price increases come in all shapes and sizes from suppliers and in ways you might not expect.

The last couple of quarters have been particularly busy for price increase asks across the board, with nearly every supplier, all industries, looking to shore up margins. Material prices, exchange rates, shipping capacity problems—the sales pitches for increases shared these common themes. The resulting strain on supplier-customer relationships can last for years and put all business at risk.

Michelle Liu, operations leader, is CMD’s lead negotiator for price discussions. Assuming a supplier comes at you with an “across the board” increase, here are a few approaches she considers.

1. Listen -If the negotiation starts off tense, let the supplier vent. By doing so, you gain a special advantage by showing empathy. We’ve found that by allowing suppliers to express their emotions, they will eventually come around to a rational state for a business discussion. Then both parties can listen better, and you can shift the conversation from feelings to facts. Be authentic and genuine, so the supplier feels you are reasonable and not trying to take advantage of them or avoid their point of view.

“Retail sales are up, and sectors such as transportation, logistics, warehousing, and construction are performing extremely well,” Arora added. “Right now, business owners are confident in the future of their firms. August is typically a slow month for loan volume, but that wasn’t

2. Unpack the BOM - Review commodity price trends and divide each bill of materials (BOM) into material types. Recently, commodity prices are at historic highs for many metal and plastic categories. If your assembly is mostly metals, which metals? The increase should not exceed the historical movement for specific metals in specific categories, and should not apply to portions of the assembly that have seen no price movement for months. Facts are friends.

3. Carve out SKUs - Sort your product line into baskets. One approach might be to segregate the increase to lower-volume parts where there may be more margin to work with. Try to protect higher-volume parts were margin may be thinner. Lock in on prices, in writing, for as long as possible.

4. Make it temporary - Like a gas surcharge in the transportation industry, carve out the price change as a separate line item and keep your historical contracted pricing the same. Ensure the supplier knows you’ll debate this topic periodically to understand why it must be kept a bit longer or removed. Make the discussion data-driven. Before the end of each meeting, set the next review date.

5. Determine timing - We’ve seen situations lately where suppliers will argue that the price changes apply for POs shipped weeks ago. Carve out what applies when. We recently successfully argued an increase should apply only

to orders placed after a certain date, to allow enough time to work upstream and requote end customers.

6. Be a historian - In general, suppliers aren’t keen on long range planning. So when hit with tariffs, raw material increases, etc. - they may not have a plan to handle disruptions. They often forget what they have committed to in a contract. So be a historian - go back to the contract. If and when the conversation gets emotional, bring it back to facts and the contract. Be fair, but facts driven.

If applicable, remind suppliers of situations when you took an increase and didn’t ask to share the burden. In recent history, this happened with a client of ours who absorbed the tariff on a specific product a few months ago, and successfully asked the supplier to absorb this latest round of increases related to plastic material pricing. In a partnership, everyone should share the burden.

7. Explain your costs - Suppliers often overlook logistics, warehousing, fulfillment, marketing, sales, and many other costs of bringing a product to market. Currently, transportation times and costs are at historical highs and most deals are quoted FOB in the port closest to the supplier. The brand owner bears responsibility for all transportation costs and working capital during transit time – both of which in recent months have more than doubled. Make sure the supplier understands you are absorbing these higher costs and you’re looking for a partner to share the burden. Open the supplier’s eyes to the costs they don’t see.

Communicate up - Make your end customers aware of the pressure you’re under. While lone voices asking for help may lose business based on price, an entire chorus of voices has a different impact and gives end customers a feel for global market pressure vs. a one-off.

The Bottom Line - In our experience, it may take several rounds of discussions before arriving at a final agreement. And even then, as our opening example illustrated, decisions are often not final. Make sure the agreement is in writing with clear instructions. Communicate the changes with your AP team and once the next round of invoices land be sure to review them carefully to confirm the agreed-to decisions were reflected. If suppliers think they can get away with something, they will try (sorry to sound cynical but we’ve it seen all too often).

While it may be tempting to threaten a supplier with taking business elsewhere, supply chain switches are often unrealistic for many reasons, and suppliers know that. Think hard about what the supplier means to your business and bottom line as you approach every price conversation, with thoughtful attention.By:

NASA: Psyche Asteroid Mission On Track For October Launch

NASA is progressing toward an October launch of Psyche, an approximately $1 billion science mission to orbit a metal-rich, main-belt asteroid that could provide new clues about the Earth’s core and planet-forming processes across the universe.

This is according to an update from an independent review board (IRB) convened last year to assess factors that contributed to a delay in the initial August 2022 launch plan. The slip led to a 19% increase in the development cost, to $814 million from $682 million, according to NASA’s 2024 budget request, and had an impact on other planetary science missions.

Psyche’s launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center now is planned for between Oct. 5 and 22.

The development effort is being led by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Arizona State University and Maxar Technologies. While tha panel traced many of the concerns to institutional issues at JPL and the center’s governance by Caltech, the COVID-19 pandemic also contributed.

The journey to Psyche, a 141-mi.-wide (226-km) chunk of rock, iron and nickel in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, is to include a 2026 Mars flyby. This will be a gravitational assist to set up arrival at its target asteroid destination in August 2029. The arrival will start a 26-month science phase as the Smart car-sized Psyche probe circles what may once have been the core of a larger planetary body that lost its outer layers

through impacts with other asteroids and comets.

Psyche also will exercise and demonstrate technologies of value to deep-space exploration, including efforts to establish a sustained human presence at the Moon under the Artemis program to prepare for expeditions to Mars.

Those include a Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) system that will test the use of lasers to communicate with mission support teams on Earth, in addition to the standard radio communications. DSOC data from the spacecraft will be encoded in photons, or light particles, for transmission.

Psyche also will employ solarpowered, xenon-fueled Hall thrusters for electric propulsion, a fuel-efficient technology for deep-space exploration.
