Business conditions dictated that the show was postponed a number of times and wasn’t next held until 1935, once again in Cleveland. The 1935 show was a success, but it was a long 12 years before the next show occurred. The first post-war show was scheduled for Chicago in 1947, at the Dodge Tucker Plant. Interestingly, at this show, all machines were required to be painted the same shade of ‘machine tool gray.’ The next show, in 1955, was held at International Amphitheatre in Chicago. As in the previous show, ma chine tool gray was the order of the day in 1955.

Originally called the National Machine Tool Builders Exposition, the first show occupied 63,000 square feet and attendance topped 12,000. Just 2 years later, in 1929, its attendance exceeded 25,000. These initial shows took place in the Cleveland Auditorium.

At IMTS 2022, you discover the latest innovations in digital and traditional manufacturing, experience more than 15,000 new machining technologies, and find processes that will help solve their manufacturing challenges and improve efficiency. This IMTS will feature more then 2000 booths spread across 9 Pavilions covering more than 1 million square feet of exhibition space. I encourage you to attend IMTS. You will be amazed by the latest and greatest in machine tool technology. If you have never before attended, be prepared to exceed your 10,000 step goal. And don’t expect a bunch of gray machines! Until next issue, I wish you the best, and God bless our troops and front line workers.

Many of us will be attending IMTS, the largest and longest-running industry trade show in the Western Hemisphere, held every other year at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois. The show, which first debuted 95 years ago, in 1927, wasn’t always held every other year nor was it always held in Chicago. In fact, its history, particularly in its early years, is quite interesting.

Corner In our industry, we can quickly ascertain current busi ness conditions by asking metals recyclers and metals salespersons how their business is going. If machines are busy, there are more chips to recycle and shops are buying steel and other materials in robust quantities. Machine tool sales should also be a good indicator of the market, though they are more impacted by business owners’ confidence in market conditions not just today but into the near future. Today, despite all of the uncertainty in this world, machine tool sales forecasts remain strong. According to Machine Tools: US, a report recently released, machine tool shipments are expected to advance 7.2% annually to 2025 from a low base in 2020, caused by the pandemic. The report states that supply chain issues will encourage ongoing reshoring efforts. Automation will also encourage onshoring efforts, as higher labor costs in the US will become less of a factor. Improvements in automation technology will also encourage purchases of new machines as a means of reducing labor costs.

In 1960, with the computer revolution in its early stages, numerical control was a hot topic at the Machine Tool Exposition, which was held in Chicago’s International Amphitheater.

The 1972 International Machine Tool Show was the first show on a two-year cycle, and the first show to utilize the facilities of McCormick Place.

Mazak Puts the Strategy in StrategicDevelopmentWorkforce

Each month 3 to 4.5 million employees quit their jobs, which costs their employers about 33% of the worker’s annual salary to replace them. Fortunately, the bulk of the reasons for such employee turnover is preventable when companies take a truly strategic approach to their workforce development programs. In taking just such an approach here at Mazak, we revamped our workforce development program by first focusing on some key aspects. Those included job descriptions, compensation and business vulnerabilities along with our efforts in recruitment and retention. In evaluating job descriptions, the key is to determine the necessary skills and talents needed for each position as PARTS MADE IN AMERICA ON-TIME

Related accessory products to be seen will include; LK’s new SLK20 blue light line laser scanner; a new LK surface roughness probe; and a new LK FREEDOM V2 measuring arm with rotary indexing table. For more information: www.lkmetrology.com

Part of our planning was not only to look at succession, but also to realize business vulnerabilities per each department. These can include things like age, lack of talent and how to overcome them. This then leads to what actions have already been taken, if any, and what actions will be planned and executed. Not taking a strategic approach is like plugging a hole in a dam as opposed to evaluating the whole dam to find out why the hole developed and how to prevent others from developing. You have to ask where are the weaknesses and where do we need to reinforce. Our strategy, when it came to compensation, was simple and straight forward. We wanted compensation packages that were competitive and would attract new talent as well, and we wanted to position Mazak as a company that doesn’t just offer a job, it offers a career.

Thank you to each of you for the support you provide personally and the support that your companies to provide to the manufacturing ecosystem in Utah. Every single day you are out doing your best to help manufacturing. It’s kind of what we get paid for but it’s evident that it’s more than that for each of us.

At Mazak, we credit veterans as essential to our ongoing hiring efforts and our ability to move past the skills gap that challenges companies throughout the manufacturing industry. With 18 new veteran hires in 2021, the our staff now includes 87 veterans in departments ranging from field service and parts to production and purchasing. For more information, visit: www.MazakUSA.com.

During Covid, we didn’t lay off any employees, but we also didn’t hire a new employees. Then business picked up fast with surging customer demand. So we had to go into a heavy recruiting mode to gain the manpower to keep pace. We successfully got the workforce to a level that was needed through internal promotions and new hires, many of which included military veterans.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock – and you haven’t been –you are fully aware of the need to recruit, train and retain more people in the machining industry. The NUNTMA exists for a number of reasons but none are even close to the importance of the topic of workforce development. So now to the ask. NUNTMA is working towards supporting the Skills USA competition for the State of Utah on a much larger scale. NUNTMA will support the competition with all of the many aspects connected to it (Developing the Test, Working with the Schools, Providing Judges, etc.).

Here’s What The Company Says When Congress passed the CHIPS and Science Act, authorizing subsidies for the semiconductor industry, it raised a big question for one of Boise’s largest employers. Will the subsidies entice Micron Technology Inc. to expand near its headquarters in Idaho? Or will it go elsewhere in the U.S., perhaps to the Texas capitol’s booming tech hub?

Micron is the only DRAM manufacturer in the U.S. The country gets most of its chips from Taiwan. The legislation approved by Congress authorized about $52 billion to induce computer chip manufacturers to build fabs, according to The Washington Post.

“So big, we call it a mega-fab.” Fab is short for fabrication, semiconductorthemanufacturingplantswhere DRAM, dynamic random-access memory, and NAND flash memory are produced.

Micron says its mega-fab will employ 3,000 to 5,000 people, including engineers, operators and permanent construction workers. Non-Micron jobs created as a result of the fab would bring the total to about 10,000, the company says. If the company were to construct the plant in Idaho, it would represent a return of sorts to the days Micron manufactured chips on its Boise campus. Micron ended manufacturing in Boise in 2009 and increased production at other fabs, mostly abroad. It sold its fab in Lehi, Utah, to Texas Instruments in 2021. “Micron was founded in Boise in 1978,” he said. “It was our first

The process technology is developed in Boise, with the chips manufactured elsewhere. Still, about 7,000 people are employed in the Treasure Valley, Beard said. Many of them are highly educated scientists and engineers from around the world. ”I anticipate that we would start constructing sometime within the next year,” Beard said. “And again, it will depend on how long it takes the (U.S.) Department of Commerce to set up the Micronprogram.”later clarified that it expects to see U.S. fab construction, but not necessarily its own, begin within the next year. Beard said he also expects other memory makers to start building their own fabs in the same time frame with the subsidies available in the CHIPS and Science Act.

The rocket’s upper stage released the spacecraft and the satellite arrived at its orbit 19,300 miles above the earth. Ground controllers acquired its first signals three hours and 43 minutes after launch. Colorado Laser Tech Company Strikes Spac Deal To Go Public, Raise Up To $434m

The company sees uses for the lasers in electronics manufacturing, battery fabrication for electric vehicles, and 3D printing for aerospace and other industries. It builds the lasers into production machines that can automate welding processes.

“Looking to the future, supersonic travel will be an important part of our ability to deliver for our customers,” said Derek Kerr, CFO of American Airlines. “We are excited about how Boom will shape the future of travel both for our company and our customers.”

Nuburu has shipped 36 laser systems so far to 26 customers in “large, global industries,” according to a company investor presentation.

By Greg Avery – Denver Business Journal

Boom Supersonic CEO and founder Blake Scholl has said the company projects selling Overtures at about $200 million each, meaning American Airlines’ base order is for planes that could be worth $4 billion.

“Our goal at TWND is to partner with a founder-led company that has a large addressable market and is positioned for rapid and sustainable long-term growth based on its technology, innovation and industry leadership,” said Chris Hollod, CEO of Tailwind, in a statement. He called Zediker a visionary and said Nuburu’s lasers will be critical to 3D printing, electric mobility and aerospace the same way that picks and shovels were in the gold rush.

Colorado-Based Boom Supersonic Lands Order

“We are proud to share our vision of a more connected and sustainable world with American Airlines,” Scholl said in a press

Overture airliners are being designed to fly twice as fast as typical passenger jets today, carrying between 65 and 80 passengers and cutting international travel times in half.

Forth Worth, Texas-based American Airlines paid a deposit to secure up to 20 of Centennial-based Boom Supersonic’s Overture aircraft, and the order holds the option for American Airlines to add another 40 planes, the companies said.

From A Major U.S. Airline

Boom Supersonic, a startup developing an airliner flying faster than the speed of sound, has landed another order from one of the biggest U.S. air carriers.

Having as much as $434 million in funding will help the company ramp up its growth and look at making mergers and acquisitions to expand the business.

American Airlines contract indicates a growing interest in the company’s airplanes for civilian supersonic travel.

Boom Supersonic aims to have the first Overture aircraft fly test flights in 2026 and its first commercial airline routes flying in 2029. Boom recently finalized overall designs for Overture. The company projects the aircraft will be able to fly Mach 1.7 over water.

Overture jets are expected to make flights from San Francisco to Tokyo take six hours, or Newark, New Jersey, to London three and a half, Boom Supersonic says.

The Overture aircraft are being designed to use sustainable aviation fuel, lowering the aircraft’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Boom Supersonic has been developing partnerships to develop its planes both for passenger airlines and for use by the U.S. military, recently forging an agreement with defense contractor Northrop Grumman to help flesh out designs for military variants of the planes.

Last year, United Airlines paid a deposit on an order for 15 Overture planes with an option to buy as many as 35 more. Including an order from Japan Airlines, Boom said it had 70 aircraft ordered prior to the American Airlines deal, the company says.

Supersonic flights are restricted over land because of issues of planes’ sonic booms. But Boom Supersonic projects there will be 600 international routes its planes could fly on and make global travel more convenient.

Mark says that there is a very large community of manufacturing technology educators – spanning a global footprint of more than 4500 schools, training centers, colleges, and universities – who leverage the capabilities and technologies of the Haas machine tools. He adds, “Additionally, we are able to help with the next generation of machinists through the Gene Haas Foundation. It was established in 1999, by Gene Haas, founder and owner of Haas Automation, Inc. The Gene Haas Foundation donates millions of dollars every year to manufacturing education and the community. “We’ve been buying machines from MMT Productivity for nearly 2 decades – both Haas and Makino machines. More recently, we’ve been buying tooling from them. We’ve just had so many positive experiences working with MMT Productivity over these years. If we ever have a problem with a machine, they consistently take care of the issue in a timely manner. We trust MMT Productivity, and we value their dedication to doing things right. We recognize that MMT Productivity takes very good care of their employees; not only do we respect this, but we also appreciate that this means that their high retention provides their customers with a highly experienced team. I highly recommend MMT Productivity to anyone.”

Hear From Some Of MMT Productivity’s Customers

Just over a year ago, we started purchasing tooling from the MMT Productivity Tooling Division, and we also started using their ‘Fast Track!‘ vending system. I was leery prior to using this system due to previous issues with other vending style systems. I took the chance with the Fast Track! and it has been outstanding for our company. We aren’t having any problems that have come up with competing systems, and I am looking to add abrasives, accessories (i.e., safety glasses) to the tooling that we are already using our Fast Track! for. Since installing the Fast Track!, as Shop Manager, machinists rarely come to me saying we’re out of a particular tool, and this means that we aren’t wasting time either programming a workaround with new tooling or worse, we don’t have a machine idle while we wait for the new tool to come in. It is really advantageous that MMT Productivity can offer both machines and all of the accessories, supplies, and service that go with machining.”

“I’ve been working with MMT Productivity for many years and have purchased 8 Haas machines, both lathes and mills. Our relationship with the MMT Productivity is great; they are responsive whenever we have an issue with hardware or software. We believe in maintaining our machines, because we recognize the cost of a machine going down, so we contract with MMT Productivity for their Preventive Maintenance program.

“As we’re in a cutting edge industry, being able to respond to customer demand is vital. Having a partner like MMT Productivity is essential to our business success. The service, reliability, and quick response from the MMT team is great! Together, we find solutions to our basic and complex problems every time. I’ve appreciated the availability of product too, there is tremendous value in having our products locally.”Geoff, Air Squared

Lockheed Martin Space has been landing work helping the military manage the GPS satellite fleet from the ground.

The company spent $80 million building a GPS III satellite production facility on its campus.

The satellites improve signal power, accuracy and jamming-prevention capabilities for military use and have other features that previous GPS satellites did not.

Lockheed Martin landed a $581.6 million contract from the Space Force to provide engineering services and support for operating the four generations of GPS satellites that the military currently has in orbit.

Lockheed Martin Space has been designing and building the modernized GPS III satellite fleet since 2008, when the company landed contracts to design and manufacture the first 10 upgraded GPS III satellites for the Air Force.

In 2018, Lockheed Martin Space won a second contract adding production of up to 22 additional GPS III follow-on satellites, what became known as GPS IIIF. The contract included a series of options for ordering satellites that could make the work worth as much as $7.2 billion. The GPS satellites have transitioned to being part of the Space Force, the newest branch of the U.S. military.

Last fall, the U.S. Space Force awarded the company a contract worth $737 million to build the 15th, 16th and 17th of the newest GPS III satellites there.

The GPS engineering and operations support work will be carried out largely at Peterson Space Force base, in Colorado Springs, and in Los Angeles, which is home to the headquarters of Space Systems Command.

Lockheed Martin’s Colorado Business Wins GPS Contract Worth Hundreds Of Millions

Lockheed Martin Space has won several contracts to help operate the fleet of GPS satellites the military maintains in orbit, many of which, if not most, were built by the company.

It’s the prime contractor manufacturing the GPS III and GPS IIIF satellites in a giant cleanroom facility at the company’s campus near Waterton Canyon.

The fleet still includes operating satellites from the GPS II generation of orbiters, some of which Lockheed Martin Space built and some of which were built by Boeing Co. As the GPS III fleet is launched, the constellation is transitioning to being operated using a ground-control and data management system that was designed and established by Waltham, Massachusetts-based Raytheon Technologies Corp. at its offices in Aurora.By Greg Avery – Denver Business Journal

High-End Colorado Stereo Speaker Maker

“Music lovers today have so much at their fingertips,” said Matthew Webster, YG Acoustics’ chief technology officer. “It has been driving growth.” By Greg Avery –Denver Business Journal 23012Address602.539.9591Oursales@metzfab.comEmail:Phone::N15thAve,Phoenix, STEEL FABRICATION MetzFab Industries provides custom metal fabrication and CNC-automated machining for a variety of industrial groups. Based in Phoenix, Arizona, we serve businesses across the U.S..

The 25-employee YG Acoustics has been building some of the most expensive stereo speakers made and selling them through high-end audio dealers to customers around the world since 2002. YG Acoustics is known for high-quality construction, clear sound and eye-popping price tags. It’s that last part YG is trying to change — a little. The company’s Peaks speaker series, starting at $8,000 for the small Cairns speaker pair and $25,000 for the full-sized Summit models, is an entrylevel price for the company. That’s more accessible than its legacy speaker systems, which can cost $1 million. Only a handful of companies make speakers as high-end as YG Acoustics, but there is a definite global market among audiophiles for them, Huntley said.

A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain • 25 • Sept / Oct 2022

YG Acoustics’ highest-priced speakers typically sell to affluent audiophiles who’ll invest in a listening room in their house and in their vacation homes.

The availability of high-fidelity streaming music on demand has been leading to expanding interest in stereo gear to a new, larger generation of audiophiles.

An Arvada maker of very high-end stereo speakers has been expanding in the hope of landing its products in more people’s homes. YG Acoustics expanded to make its new speaker line from its 20-year-old location in an industrial park off Interstate 70 and Wadsworth Boulevard, and it added a new listening room where it can demonstrate just what the company’s speakers can do. That recently meant filling the space with music that sounded as clear and enveloping as if the dual drummers of a Joe Bonamassa recording were in the room and revealing the strain of Adele’s vocal cords on another song.

The purchase entitles Royal Gold to a stream of royalty payments from the gold and minerals production on 300 square miles of what’s known as the Cortez Complex, and a neighboring area known as the Fourmile development project, which is not yet being mined.

The Cortez Complex is being mined by Nevada Gold Mines, a joint venture of the two largest gold miners in the world, Barrick Gold, which operates the mines, and Denver-based Newmont Corp, which owns 38.5% of Nevada Gold Mines. The two companies formed the joint venture in 2019 to make their neighboring gold operations in Northern Nevada more efficient and to end a hostile takeover bid of Newmont that had been mounted by Barrick.

Barrick reported 115,000 ounces of gold production at the Cortez Complex in the first quarter of 2022, and it’s expected to produce between 480,000 and 530,000 ounces for the full year of 2022, according to Barrick. The Artemis I mission is ready to launch. That’s the result of NASA’s Flight Readiness Review. The review was an in-depth assessment of the preparedness of the 322-foot-tall (98-metertall) stack, consisting of the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft, currently sitting on the launchpad at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The uncrewed Artemis I will launch on a mission that goes beyond the moon and returns to Earth. Once it launches, the spacecraft will reach a distant retrograde orbit around the moon, traveling 1.3 million miles (2.1 million kilometers) over the course of 42 days.

The Orion spacecraft will travel farther than any spacecraft built for humans has ever flown, reaching 40,000 miles (64,000 kilometers) beyond the far side of the moon, according to NASA. There are no humans onboard, but Orion will carry 120 pounds (54.4 kilograms) of mementos, including toys, Apollo 11 items and three mannequins.

Autonomous Mower Company To Choose Between Colorado, Florida, Texas For Production Plant

ongmont’s Scythe Robotics, which developed a self-driving, commercialgrade lawnmower, will choose between locations in Colorado, Florida and Texas for a large-scale production plant, the company’s founders said.

Morrison said that Scythe is currently building out a small-scale production line in Longmont. It’s hiring a manufacturing engineer to set up the factory, as well as positions for its supply chain and assembly line. Scythe so far employs 45 people, about 30 of whom live in Colorado, and the production line will gradually increase those numbers. For its larger-scale manufacturing facility, Scythe will decide between expanding in Longmont or opening a new plant in either Austin, Texas, or Miami, Florida. Scythe plans to base its decision on the cost of establishing a production facility in each area, as well as the local labor markets.

“Asaudience.Millennials

One way to gain traction with Millennials is to provide access to tools they want to use, not simply those required to do their jobs, Wells said. “Millennials want to work that are

“We’re keeping our options open,” he said. “We’ve got offices in Texas and Florida, but our engineering is here in Colorado, and we’d love to co-locate the manufacturing with the engineering so that those two sides of the company can work really closely.”

Millennials’ technology expectations have been shaped by smartphones, Facebook and digital media – in other words, by easy and ubiquitous connectivity. It’s not surprising, then, that traditional manufacturing systems can seem as retro as waiting for dial-up internet to connect. And that’s bad for the manufacturing sector, because its skills gap is looming large.

Modern and accessible tech

move into the manufacturing environment, there’s a certain expectation that the technology they are interacting with will work the same as what they grew up with,” said Matt Wells, product general manager for automation software at GE Digital. “The entire generation expects that data will be available to them anytime, anywhere, even outside of the plant. If they need access to information, they don’t want to call someone; they want to pull out their phone and see what’s going on.”

Their mower, the Scythe M.52, is a 1,100-pound, allelectric mower that’s outfitted with sensors and cameras that allow it to cut in straight lines and respond to the presence of humans, animals and other obstacles. The company has seen interest from landscaping businesses across the country that maintain large properties, such as parks, school campuses and office and housing developments, Morrison said.

Manufacturing’s image problem is complex and in, some aspects, based on false assumptions. But one real obstacle is that some manufacturing systems can seem antiquated, and it’s an issue that many manufacturers and related organizations are already addressing.

The Colorado Economic Development Commission voted unanimously on July 27 to offer Scythe Robotics a $372,000 incentive to build a 50,000-square-foot facility in Longmont. However, the company is about two years away from establishing a facility of that size, and it’s keeping its options open, said Jack Morrison, a co-founder of Scythe.

“Over the next couple of years, as we scale from dozens of machines this year to over 100 next year, to thousands a year after that, we’ll continue to evaluate our options as we set everything up for really large scale production,” Morrison told Denver Business Journal.

Scythe already has offices in both Texas and Florida. When the company was still in stealth mode and developing its technology, Morrison and his co-founders were advised to test their prototypes in Florida, where the air is humid and the grass thick. The difficult mowing conditions helped the company hone its product to work in all environments, Morrison said.

According to the Colorado Office of Economic

Scythe expanded to Texas in 2020 to test the prototype in a different climate. It was also a strategic move, because Texas has large swaths of landscaped area and many potential customers, Morrison said. A few Texas landscapers were Scythe’s first customers to receive and use the mowers this year.

Scythe began accepting orders in October 2021, and it has since garnered reservations for 7,000 mowers. It’s already filled the number of reservations it can accept for 2022 and most of 2023 and plans to work from 2024 to 2026 to fulfill its backlog.

Longmont remains Scythe’s largest office, and its engineering staff is located there. A benefit to expanding within Colorado would be to keep its engineering and manufacturing teams together, Morrison said.

Forward-looking companies and organizations in the manufacturing sector are working to update systems so they better align with the ease and accessibility of user experience so pervasive with personal technology. Traditional manufacturing platforms – for example, manufacturing execution systems and supply chain applications – are being redesigned with new mobile interfaces, cloud capabilities and modern-day dashboards to make what has historically been perceived as arcane into something far more friendly and familiar to a tech-savvy

A joint study by the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte Consulting projects a surge of nearly 3.5 million open manufacturing jobs created over the next decade. Some of the empty slots will come by way of retiring baby boomers, while others are related to new positions created as a result of natural business growth, the report found. What the report also predicts: As conditions stand now, 2 million of those jobs will go unfulfilled. In other words, the need for the manufacturing sector to appeal to Millennials – the generation typically defined as those born between 1981 and 1997 – is both critical and a very tall order. Indeed, manufacturing still has a negative image among younger generations, experts say. In a 2015 public perception of manufacturing study, also by The Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte, respondents ages 19 to 33 ranked manufacturing as their lowest preference in terms of potential career choices.

How Millennials’ Technology Expectations Can Help Save Manufacturing

Maxar is hiring at its bay area sites as it handles a growing number of satellite construction jobs there, both for its own WorldView Legion earth imaging satellites and building orbiters and hardware for other companies.

By Greg Avery – Denver Business Journal

“We have the capability to easily incorporate these functionalities into a relationship with it,” he said, ”and, because they are San Jose-based, it offers our talented employees the opportunity to join its team within the same geography.”

The Westminster-based space technology and manufacturing company is sending 123 jobs involved in the assembly of some satellite radio frequency and electronics hardware in Palo Alto, California, to a dedicated space nearby in San Jose in a facility owned by contract manufacturer Sanmina Corp., which will become the workers’ employer.

The Sanmina factory is about 12 miles away from the Maxar site in Palo Alto. Maxar employs about 2,000 people in the area, with manufacturing plants of its own in Palo Alto and San Jose. The manufacturing partnership is unique to the radio frequency and electronics assembly group in Palo Alto and is being done in part because Sanmina Corp. is set up to handle what Maxar needs, Vivanco said.

The jobs being moved are mostly assembly technicians with some engineering, software and procurement jobs also being transferred over to Sanmina Corp., according to documents filed with the California state economic development office.

Westminster-Based Maxar To Outsource Some Satellite Manufacturing Jobs

“These are not layoffs,” said Fernando Vivanco, a Maxar spokesman. “Maxar will have a consistent, on-site presence at Sanmina Corp. with a dedicated Maxar development lab and workspace, which will help facilitate the success of this partnership.”

Maxar Technologies will start transferring dozens of jobs in one of its satellite factories to an outsourcing firm, shifting the employees and assembly of some components to another company.

The company today called Maxar acquired its presence in Palo Alto and San Jose a decade ago when it bought longstanding commercial satellite manufacturer Space Systems Loral, or SSL. Maxar or its predecessor companies have built 92 commercial satellites for companies such as SiriusXM, EchoStar and others. The business recently won a contract from Melbourne Florida-based L3Harris Technologies to build 14 satellite bodies for a Defense Department satellite network for which L3Harris is a prime contractor.

The transfer of positions involved ending a total of 125 jobs at Maxar and all but two of the Maxar workers in those positions being offered employment at Sanmina Corp., according to filings made to California’s state economic development arm under the federal Worker Assistance and Retraining Notification act.

Maxar employs 5,000 people nationwide. It manufactures satellites and robotics in California, designs and develops space technology and flies satellites from the Denver metro area, and develops artificial intelligence and data technologies from Washington, D.C.’s suburbs.

Development and International Trade, a larger facility would bring 394 jobs to Longmont. The company would hire engineers, manufacturers, sales and operations professionals at an average salary of $116,881, which is 157% of the average annual wage in Boulder County.

The transfer of jobs is slated to start Sept. 5, which is when Sanmina Corp. will officially become the workers’ employer, according to Maxar’s WARN Act notice.

The Army is budgeted in its five-year plan to start a competition for the radar in fiscal year 2017.

When asked about the outlook for the future, MCI-EFI survey respondent Dave Fate, CEO, Stonebriar Commercial Finance, said, “The resilience of the equipment leasing and finance industry continues to demonstrate itself during 2022. Over the decades the industry has overcome and prospered through recessions, a financial crisis, and a global health pandemic. We are all now faced with the challenges of supply chain disruption, inflation, labor shortages, and the ‘noise’ that accompanies the upcoming midterm elections in a few months. Regardless of these challenges, the industry always performs well. I am happy to report that SCF is on a record pace for new business volume and profitability this year, and our portfolio continues to perform exceptionally well.”

None expect to hire fewer employees, down from 3.7% in July.

The Army concluded that upgrades and replacement radar options take nearly the same amount of time to field. The baseline Patriot would reach initial operational capability in fiscal year 2027, upgraded Patriot in early fiscal 2028, MFCR and MFCR with surveillance capability in late fiscal ‘28. G/ATOR would take the longest to reach initial operational capability, according to the slides, reaching the milestone past fiscal 2029.

The analysis considered the baseline option of a Patriot system with an AESA radar, a Patriot AESA radar with three antenna arrays (enabling Patriot to see behind itself), a multifunction fire control radar (MFCR), an MFCR with a surveillance radar, and the Marine Corps’ Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar (G/ATOR) made by Northrop Grumman.

The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation (the Foundation) releases the August 2022 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI) . The index reports a qualitative assessment of both the prevailing business conditions and expectations for the future as reported by key executives from the $900 billion equipment finance sector. Overall, confidence in the equipment finance market is 50, an increase from the July index of 46.1.

Equipment Finance Industry Confidence Improves

To focus the study, the Army made several assumptions. For one, it assumed that any alternative could be fully integrated into the AIAMD network. Raid vignettes were designed to represent a single battery’s capability.

• When asked, 25.9% of the executives report they expect to hire more employees over the next four months, up from 18.5% in July. 74.1% expect no change in headcount over the next four months, a decrease from 77.8% last month.

51.9% believe business conditions will remain the same over the next four months, down from 63% the previous month. 33.3% believe business conditions will worsen.

• When asked to assess their business conditions over the next four months, 14.8% of executives responding said they believe business conditions will improve over the next four months, an increase from 3.7% in July.

ISO 9001: 2015 / AS9100 Revision D Certified

• 7.7% of the survey respondents believe demand for leases and loans to fund capital expenditures (capex) will increase over the next four months, a decrease from 11.1% in July. 76.9% believe demand will “remain the same” during the same four-month time period, an increase from 55.6% the previous month. 15.4% believe demand will decline.

• 7.4% of the respondents expect more access to capital to fund equipment acquisitions over the next 4 months, down from 11.1% in July. 85.2% of executives indicate they expect the “same” access to capital, an increase from 81.5% last month. 7.4% expect “less” access to capital.

The G/ATOR system — which would need 118 months to move through the acquisition cycle — was assessed as having high schedule risk in both the technology maturation and risk reduction phase (TMRR) and the EMD phase. The program could see schedule slippage, the Army predicts, anywhere from 14 to 18 months.

To assess capabilities, alternatives were weighed against the most stressing tactical ballistic missile threat to the front, according to the document.

Overall, the Army determined the baseline Patriot option had the highest operations and maintenance costs. However, the Patriot upgrades stay within the Army’s cost target and would show improvements over the baseline option in addressing Replacementthreats.alternatives with X-band interceptor communication arrays were determined to be the most costly, exceeding Army cost targets. But they “have the most improvement” over the baseline Patriot, according to the slides.

G/ATOR’s average procurement unit cost is between $147 million and $254.6 million, MFCR is predicted to cost $223.9 million per copy and the MFCR with a surveillance radar is estimated to cost $326.4 million.

August 2022 Survey Results: The overall MCI-EFI is 50, an increase from the July index of 46.1.

The Army also evaluated the cost based on 91 procured radars — four prototypes and 87 production assets — and 485 launchers consisting of four prototypes and 481 production assets. The service figured the program schedule would reach initial operational capability ideally by fiscal year 2026 and procurement quantities would stay at 15 battalions as described in a Nov. 7, 2014, materiel development decision.

The Army looked at the risk and the cost associated with each alternative in order to fully integrate them into its future Army Integrated Air and Missile Defense (AIAMD) Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS). Northrop Grumman is developing and will field IBCS — the brains of the future missile defense system — in fiscal year 2019. And the analysis considered the growth potential for each option to defend against an evolving lower-tier threat, according to the slides.

focus on carbon emissions also has bolstered the need for closer-to-home supply chains. Carbon pricing mechanisms and taxes recently implemented in the European Union and elsewhere will further reduce the appeal of extensive cross-border supply chains, Barclays economists wrote in a recent note to clients.

To be sure, globalization has been a tailwind for investors and large companies for much of the past 30 years, particularly U.S. firms. Increased trade across borders boosted profits and productivity and allowed countries to focus on the goods and services they were best equipped to produce. Globalization has also provided multinational companies with new customers and new pools of low-cost Butlabor.the Covid-19 pandemic, which snarled supply chains worldwide, pushed many executives to think about bringing their business closer to home. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which upended commodities markets, is another motivator.

The U.S. government is also luring companies back. The Chips and Science Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, both passed this month, provide tax breaks and other incentives for building and investing in manufacturing centers for goods such as semiconductors, electric vehicles and Investors’pharmaceuticals.increased

Barclays found that large S&P 500 companies are recruiting more in their home countries and slowing cross-border M&A activity.

U.S. Companies on Pace to Bring Home Record Number of Overseas Jobs

So is the possibility of a conflict between China and Taiwan, which produces the chips used in smartphones, personal computers and cars.

The 350,000 reshored jobs expected this year would far exceed the roughly 265,000 jobs added in 2021 and would be more than 50 times the 6,000 jobs reshored to the U.S. in 2010. The Reshoring Initiative tallies company announcements of head-count increases for positions that were previously held in other countries, new positions in industries that had little to no U.S. presence and positions created in the U.S. from direct investment by companies based in other countries. However, the broad shift might not be an outright win for blue-collar American workers. Increased capital spending suggests many companies could be looking to replace overseas workers with technology rather than with U.S.based workers, according to Bank of America. Capital expenditures are often investments in equipment or technology that automate the tasks of workers.

American companies are on pace to reshore, or return to the U.S., nearly 350,000 jobs this year, according to a report published Friday by the Reshoring Initiative. That would be the highest number on record since the group began tracking the data in 2010. The Reshoring Initiative lobbies for bringing manufacturing jobs back to the U.S.

Over the past month, dozens of companies have said they had plans to build new factories or start new manufacturing projects in the U.S. Idaho-based Micron Technology Inc. announced a $40 billion expansion of its current headquarters and investments in memory manufacturing. Ascend Elements said it would build a $1 billion lithiumion battery materials facility in Kentucky. South Korean conglomerate SK Group said it would invest $22 billion in a new packaging facility, electric vehicle charging systems, and hydrogen production in Kentucky and Tennessee.
