Here in the US we face many challenges, including:

What do we have to be thankful for?

Feature Articles......................................................1,26-27

For one: war. The last significant military engagement on U.S. soil happened in 1890 at the Battle of Wounded Knee. With vivid images and details that are available to us real time, we are able to see the horror of war happening now in 2 parts of the world, the Ukraine/Russia war that is more than 18 months old, and now the Israel/Gaza invasion. Just imagine what it is like to live in utter fear for the safety of you and your family. In this country, we are relatively safe, and yes, we do have a lot to be thankful for. In the Old Testament, thanksgiving was fundamental in the life of God’s people. The temple liturgy provided offerings of thanksgiving and praise and sang psalms regularly of thanksgiving to God. In the New Testament, thanksgiving is the heart of the Church’s life. The word eucharist means thanksgiving, and the very center of the Church’s worship of God is when, in remembrance of all His salvific acts in Christ, the faithful “lift up their hearts” and “give thanks unto the Lord.” Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated on various dates in the United States, Canada, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Liberia, and unofficially in countries like Brazil and the Philippines. Here in the US., Thanksgiving is a holiday in which we are celebrating the harvest and other blessings of the past year. Americans generally believe that their Thanksgiving is modeled on a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people. Rather than just being a day where we eat too much and strategize our Black Friday sales plan of attack, we should go back to our historical and spiritual roots as we give thanks to God. There has never been a time I can recall where it has been more important to stop and reflect and to be thankful for what we have, and to embrace, respect and celebrate our differences and our diverse cultures. I think as US citizens we can all strive to be more tolerant. I wish you all a beautiful Thanksgiving and end of year and let me end with a Thanksgiving Prayer. Oh, God, when I have food help me to remember the hungry; when I have work, help me to remember the jobless; when I have a warm home, help me to remember the homeless; when I am without pain, help me to remember those who suffer; and remembering, help me to destroy my complacency and bestir my compassion. Make me concerned enough to help, by word and deed, those who cry out for what we take for granted.—Samuel F. Pugh In closing, God bless our troops and I wish you wondefull holidays and continued success.

FEED THE BEAST

Automation keeps the NHP running. Day and night. Nothing is sweeter than the sound of a spindle making chips, especially when it’s the high-performance spindle found on one of our NHP Series of Compact Horizontal Machining Centers. These workhorses can handle whatever you throw at them, and are always asking for more. That’s where our Linear Pallet System (LPS) comes in. It feeds the NHP around the clock, which leaves nothing but pallets upon pallets of precise, ready-to-ship parts. And if floor space is a concern, the Rotary Pallet System (RPS) will fit right in.

Announcements & Releases platform that streamlines, simplifies and expedites access to capital for small manufacturers, supporting job growth and economic development in a challenging market environment. “Manufacturers must automate and advance if they are to meet customer needs and create jobs. However, financing new technologies amid rising interest rates is challenging,” said CAMA President Tim Heaton. “Our new access-to-capital tool matches the manufacturer with the most suitable lender, taking time and guesswork out of the loan search process, while allowing businesses to spend more time building the products that make Colorado strong.” FirstBank, Key Bank and DreamSpring are among the community lenders partnering with CAMA to launch the initiative, noting that the new tool assists their organizations in supporting Colorado’s smaller manufacturing businesses. “We know manufacturers are vital to our economy but often deal with workforce and capital challenges,” said Kristen Bernhardt, president of FirstBank’s Northwest Market. “We look forward to helping them find solutions to efficiently operate and grow their business and see the [access-to-capital] program as one of several ways we’re able to accomplish that.” Edmond Johnson, board chair of DreamSpring, president/ A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

CEO of Premier Manufacturing and a member of CAMA, said: “This collaboration between CAMA and DreamSpring will result in many micro and small-business manufacturers gaining access to capital — money they can use to advance technology-driven manufacturing in their facilities.” The new access-to-capital platform cuts costs for new customer loan origination by nearly 70% and cuts acquisition costs by half, while almost entirely eliminating application rejections, said Luther Branham, co-founder and managing director of ACT. “ACT provides quick access to the best lending product, interest rates and terms through technology that is easily scalable across different organizations,” Branham added. “We’re launching the platform with CAMA and its lending partners and will be adding more industry sectors and programs that support small businesses as we grow, focusing on underserved and often overlooked markets and communities across the United States.” Continued page 12

Announcements & Releases Colorado small manufacturers can access the lending platform through CAMA’s website. After answering a few key questions, applicants are matched with lending programs that best meet their needs. Based on the results, applicants then specify where they want ACT to refer their application. Rob Kraft, ACT’s co-founder and chief technology officer, said the digital platform was designed with direct input from small businesses and community lending institutions. “The platform is highly configurable, allowing us to be responsive to customers and developments in the marketplace,” Kraft said. “We can make adjustments to the system within minutes, unlike other financial technology platforms that can require hours or days to update.”

The docked spacecraft have served as lab space for the station, launched satellites and been used to help boost the ISS to a higher orbit. Voyager Space, a holding company that has acquired and integrated smaller U.S. space businesses, is working on Starlab as a commercial space station developed in time to replace the ISS when it’s de-commissioned from orbit late in this decade. NASA awarded Starlab $160 million in late 2021 as part of a program helping develop private-sector space stations for launch into orbit by 2028, the expected end of the ISS’s designed lifespan. The Starlab project passed a significant design milestone with NASA this summer. The Starlab space station project is being led by Nanoracks, a Houston-based company majority owned by

Foundation Projects Growth in Equipment and Software Investment; Raises GDP Forecast to 2.3% After a strong second quarter, equipment and software investment growth is expected to slow over the remainder of the year, according to the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation’s Q4 update to the 2023 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook. The report, released today, revised its annual estimate for equipment and software investment growth to 3.0%, most of which occurred during the first half of the year. As a result, the Foundation raised its annual GDP forecast to 2.3%. The Foundation’s report is focused on the $1.16 trillion equipment leasing and finance industry and highlights key trends in equipment investment, placing them in the context of the broader U.S. economic climate.

Nancy Pistorio, Foundation Chair and President of Madison Capital LLC, said, “The Q4 update reports that the U.S. economy posted another quarter of solid growth in Q2, as inflation has returned to a more tolerable—though still elevated—level, and the labor market remains strong. Looking at the Foundation’s forward-looking Momentum Monitors, most of the 12 verticals’ current momentum readings are below their historical average, suggesting relatively weak near-term investment growth. The good news is that more than half of the industry verticals are recovering or emerging, suggesting that investment conditions should improve next year.” Highlights from the Q4 update to the 2023 Outlook include: •

The U.S. economy expanded at a 2.1% annualized rate in Q2, decreasing slightly from Q1 but defying concerns of a summer slowdown or downturn. The labor market has shown remarkable resilience to higher interest rates, and as a result the odds of a soft landing have risen. However, the near-term horizon remains cloudy and headwinds continue to build, including rapidly rising consumer debt and its potential impact on spending.

Equipment and software investment expanded at a 5.3% annualized rate in Q2 after contracting in Q1. However, credit availability continues to tighten and many businesses have adjusted expansion plans in anticipation of slower economic growth later this year. As a result, the Foundation’s investment growth forecasts are modest for both Q3 (1.2% annualized) and Q4 (0.5% annualized).

Microreactor Being Tested For Use At Idaho National Laboratory The first new reactor in four decades to be used at Idaho National Laboratory is currently being tested before being put to use. A prototype of the electric-powered MARVEL microreactor is undergoing tests by the U.S. Department of Energy, the developer of the 12-foot-tall machine. The reactor is being built to help advance new reactor technologies, the department said in a statement, and should be operational at INL by 2025. “The MARVEL project underscores the potential of human innovation to address pressing energy security and climate challenges facing modern society,” said Yasir Arafat, the chief designer and project lead for MARVEL, in a statement. PCAT, and is being conducted for the first time in New Freedom, Pennsylvania, at the Creative Engineers, Inc. manufacturing facility. “This PCAT demonstration is an important step in that process and will help validate and benchmark tools we use to accurately predict how the reactor will perform,” Arafat said. Creative Engineers “installed the PCAT back in May and loaded the system with sodium-potassium and lead-bismuth coolants to demonstrate heat removal from its electrically heated core,” the statement read. The Department of Energy is collecting new data on the coolant flow and temperature readings to make sure the reactor performs as it should. MARVEL is expected to generate 85 kilowatts of thermal energy and will operate within INL’s Transient Reactor Test Facility, “connected to the lab’s first nuclear microgrid.” A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Growing Aerospace Company Finds Denver-Area Home For HQ And Satellite Technology Factory A Colorado space company has decided where it will establish its headquarters and satellite antenna factory — a location where it expects to grow as the company expands to employ hundreds of people. Tendeg, based in Louisville, leased a 100,080-square-foot building in the Bolder Innovation Campus to become its advanced manufacturing facility and headquarters location. The move adds to the two buildings it has been using in the neighboring Colorado Tech Center industrial park. “Our unique deployable antennas for satellites have gained extensive traction for both Government and commercial programs,” said Gregg Freebury, founder and CEO of Tendeg, in a statement. “Most of our contracts will be supporting a constellation of satellites. Consequently, we need to build a state-of-the-art facility for our growing team and increase our production rates.” The company makes mesh antennas used on satellites and other spacecraft. It has been winning customers like Lockheed Martin Space and supplying satellites used commercially and in programs funded by the federal government This spring Tendeg attracted a $4.9 million tax rebate incentive package from the Colorado Economic Development Commission based on it adding as many as 451 jobs in the state in the next few years. It also received economic incentives from the city of Louisville. Tendeg was searching for what facility could house much of that growth and allow it to expand its small-satellite antenna production. CBRE brokers Erik Abrahamson, representing Tendeg, and Jeremy Kroner, representing landlord United Properties, finalized getting Tendeg a multi-year lease for the 1350 S. 96th St. building. “This transaction is the latest indicator of how the aerospace market in the northwest corridor continues to grow,” he said in a press release. Tendeg’s lease announcement came a few days after Capella Space Corp., a San Francisco-based space technology company with an office in Louisville, announced it is doubling its presence in the city by leasing 32,000 square feet in a flex-industrial building the Colorado Tech Center. That company plans to add as many as 150 new jobs as it expands its synthetic-aperture radar small satellite production. Tendeg has been in business for over 20 years. It expanded to a second building the CTC industrial park only a few months ago.The company employs about 75 people today. Its neighbors in Louisville include Sierra Space, a multi-billion-dollar space business building its Dream Chaser space planes in the Colorado Tech Center. Sierra Space has also established a flight operations center in the industrial park. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

The Bolder Innovation Campus — built last year — has a second 100,000-square-foot building for which brokers are seeking tenants. The development is part of a wave of new industrial developments being built near the major transit corridors of the metro area.Tendeg’s lease was part of 2.9 million square feet of second-quarter industrial leasing that took place in the Denver metro area, CBRE market data says. That’s a 73% increase above first-quarter leasing volumes, the company says.

A Colorado-born space company landed new capital.Louisvillebased Sierra Space raised $290 million in Series B capital, bringing its valuation to $5.3 billion. Sierra Space is most commonly known for its work on the Dream Chaser, the first winged commercial space plane. Sierra Space has raised $1.7 billion since it spun out as a subsidiary of Nevada-based Sierra Nevada Corp. in April 2021. Sierra Space says this is the largest amount of capital raised across Series A and B rounds by a commercial space business. This fresh injection of capital comes at a time when the space company is just months away from the first flight of its Dream Chaser spacecraft. The Dream Chaser is designed to deliver scientific research materials and cargo to the International Space Station.

LV Swiss Is Honored With The Prestigious ‘Utah’s Rural Business Of The Year’ For 2023 If you have done business with LV Swiss, it should come as no surprise that the Governor of Utah’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) awarded LV Swiss the prestigious “Utah’s Rural Business of the Year for 2023” . The GOED award recognizes companies in Utah’s 25 rural counties for their outstanding achievement, growth, impact in their community, job creation and innovation. LV Swiss has been nothing short of stellar in all of these categories, and the longevity of their

employees is a tribute to this, with 25% having worked for the company for more than 10 years.

LV Swiss’ success dates back to 2009, when the privately held high tech contract manufacturing company was founded by the 3 owners, Paul Klein Jr., CEO; Darren Darren, Richard, and Paul Jr. Hatch, CFO; and Richard Hoffman, President. Each brought unique expertise to the new entity. Paul Jr. has extensive knowledge of running large corporations in Silicon Valley, Darren brought an invaluable software/technology design background, and Richard had the vast knowledge required to run a precision machine company. The complimentary skillsets each of the founders brought to the start-up is instrumental to the company’s success. The manufacturing entity, based in Southern Utah, in the city of LaVerkin (near the entrance of Zion National Park), offers Swiss Screw machining, precision CNC machining, milling, turning, custom prototyping, centerless grinding and customized tooling on demand.

It is AS9100, ISO13485 (for medical device customers), and ISO9001: 2015 certified, and its ITAR Registration enables the company to do business with US Government entities.

These certifications have all facilitated LV Swiss’s ability to engage with a number of Fortune 500 companies in the Medical, Aerospace & Defense, Communications/ RF Connectors and Industrial Products. Several customers rely on LV Swiss for their precision, small A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

(diameters starting from .018), and high precision (+/- .0002) parts, ranging from prototype to production. All 3 owners remain active in the company today, and they have assembled a team of managers to run the day to day operations. Paul Klein III, North American Sales and Marketing Manager, joined the company more than 2 years ago, bringing sales, marketing, industrial distribution and general management expertise from his previous employers. Jeff Christiansen, Director of Operations, came to the company over a decade ago, armed with a strong manufacturing background, and with expertise in the medical device field. In his previous employment, Jeff had substantial experience in Swiss Screw machining which has proven to be a major asset to LV Swiss. Compliance Manager Suzann Christiansen brings 30+ years of expertise in the medical device manufacturing industry, and today, she not only manages compliance with all certification programs, but Paul III commented that “She is flawless in raw material management.” Paul Jr. (CEO) commented, “We are a cost effective supplier to many large corporations, and this is facilitated by our location in Southern Utah, which affords us lower cost production and support. Even so, we intuitively recognize that we must do more for our customers than our competitors do if we expect them to continue to partner with us and to help us to achieve our growth strategy. We must deliver high quality parts at a competitive price to our customers; we must deliver them faster and more seamlessly than others do. It has to be easy to do business with LV Swiss.” Richard (President) indicated that, “We’ve added equipment, software, and warehouses to shorten our delivery times and improve our control of the manufacturing process. As an example, we have an in-house toolmaker who supports our customers who need custom tooling to build their parts.

Our centerless grinding capabilities mean that LV Swiss can grind raw material to a customized size rather than wait for the raw material vendors to do this. Our local warehouses enable us to maintain substantial inventory of materials – which proved invaluable to our customers during and after COVID when material shortages were rampant.” Jeff adds, “Our purchase of the 2 Haas Mills meant that our customers using our Swiss Screw machining services didn’t have to go to another supplier to get their parts CNC machined.” He continues, “We have long term contracts in place with a number of our large customers, which can afford them JIT inventory, Kanban and a consignment programs.” Jeff says that a few years ago, several of LV Swiss’ customers changed their ordering patterns to more JIT. “Instead of 50,000 piece orders, we were seeing more frequent, lower volume orders, often in the low thousands. As our Swiss type machines with automatic bar loaders are optimized for large quantities, we had to rethink the Swiss machines that would support this new business model.” Jeff is the resident Swiss Screw machine expert at LV Swiss, and he knew from years of working with the Star Swiss type automatic lathes that they were an ideal machine brand for smaller quantities. Today, 13 of the 20 LV Swiss’ Swiss Screw machines are manufactured by Star. Jeff says, “Where in the past we could do 4-5 set-ups per week with our older machines, with our newer Star machines we are doing 15-20 set-ups in the same timeframe.” In addition, LV Swiss utilizes Tornos/Deco Machines for High Volume, tight tolerance, small diameter parts.

Today, lead times at LV Swiss are exceptional — truly better than the industry standard. Based on LV Swiss’s sophisticated Software Systems and Quality Performance Tools, , LV Swiss performs at the highest levels of the largest companies in the world. Today, many of their customers trust them with real time access to their portals, and LV Swiss has visibility to when their parts are being used, which then signals the company to build more parts to replenish the inventory. They also built an In-house tailored MRP system which is routinely applauded in its sophistication by LV Swiss’ customers. The LV Swiss Quality Management System is another key differentiator for its customers. Darren (CFO) says, “We offer fully integrated in-process ‘Critical to Quality’ (CTQ) labs, as well as fully compliant AS9102 First Article reporting. Our Quality Department utilizes such equipment as Keyence Optical Comparators, Hexagon CMM, hardness testers, and laser micrometers.” The GOED Award includes a key metric of ‘Impact to the Community’ in its awards criteria. LV Swiss recognizes its responsibility and opportunity to both give back to

Jeff and Paul III the community and to help to fill the pipeline of next generation machinists. As such, both Jeff and Suzann are members of a Southern Utah Manufacturing Association, with Jeff as Vice President. The company also has donated machines and materials to the Dixie Technical College in St. George, Utah, where both Paul Jr. and Jeff participate on the Advisory Board. Paul III commented “What sets LV Swiss apart from the competition? We are not just a CNC / Mill Machine Shop. We are a hightech, advanced CNC and Mill Machine Shop with technicians who deliver the highest quality parts. Our advanced in-house software technology gives realtime, up to date information on the progress of every part. It traces the manufacturing of a part from drawing to engineering to manufacturing to shipping, and finally to delivery.” LV Swiss is honored to be this year’s GOED’s Utah’s Rural Business of the Year recipient. If you haven’t done business with them, you should make the call to see what they can do for you. Prepare to be delighted with high quality precision parts short lead times, delivered at a competitive prices. For more information, contact them at: (435) 635-1482 or visit LVSwiss.com.

These Are The Top Concerns For Small Businesses As 2024 Approaches Optimism declined for small-business owners over the past three months, but they still feel better than they did a year ago. That’s one of the big takeaways from the September NFIB Small Business Optimism Index. The index found the percentage of small-business owners expecting better business conditions over the next six months dropped six points from August to a net negative 43%. That’s 18 points better than last June’s reading of 61% but the index remains at recession levels. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

28 • Nov / Dec 2023

The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index decreased half of a point in September to 90.8, marking its 21st consecutive month below the 49-year average of 98. About 23% of owners reported inflation was their single most important problem in operating their business, unchanged from last month and tied with labor quality as the top concern. Inflation and tight labor markets have remained the chief concerns among small-business owners over the past two years, but they are also concerned about sagging sales. “Owners remain pessimistic about future business conditions, which has contributed to the low optimism they have regarding the economy,” said Bill Dunkelberg, NFIB Chief Economist. “Sales growth among small businesses have slowed and the bottom line is being squeezed, leaving owners few options beyond raising selling prices for financial relief.” More than 9 of 10 businesses that are hiring or trying to hire reported few or no

qualified applicants for the positions they were trying to fill. That’s up 3 points from a month ago. Drilling deeper, 27% said they have no candidates at all, which is up 6 points.

far this year. A net 8% reported their last loan was harder to get than in previous attempts.

Despite those lingering obstacles, the NFIB offered a few positive signs for businesses.

As we’ve noted, evolving credit conditions have many businesses looking to alternative sources for capital — including public and private grants, nonbank lenders and others.

Nearly 60% of respondents reported capital spending outlays in the past six months, which was up 1 percentage point from August. Additionally, 24% of companies plan capital expenditures in the next six months. And, despite high-profile layoffs that are hitting the technology and banking sectors, small businesses are still hiring. Small-business owners’ plans to fill open positions remain elevated, with a net 18% planning to create new jobs in the next three months, which is up 1 point from August

Other notable findings from the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index:

Businesses aren’t expecting things to improve in the short term.

• Forty-three percent of owners reported job openings that were hard to fill, up three points from August and remaining historically high as owners can’t hire enough workers due to few qualified applicants.

The percentage of respondents expecting easier credit conditions over the next three months declined to a net negative -10%. That’s tied with May 2023 for the lowest point in the past five years. Only 23% of respondents said their borrowing needs were satisfied over the past three months, which is the lowest point so

• A net 23% plan to raise compensation in the next three months, which is down three points from August.

Credit conditions are still posing a challenge for small businesses, thanks to both higher interest rates and banks getting more cautious with their lending. The net percentage of businesses paying a higher interest rate compared to three months ago tied a five-year high of 26% in September.

In all, the state and local incentives package could then total over $40 million, depending on the final local match.

Referred to as “Project Danish,” the turbine company plans to build a two-mold blade manufacturing facility that it expects to be in operation for at least 20 years, according to OEDIT. The company also wants to build a warehouse, administrative building, blade workshop, post-molding workshop, and a “Centre of Excellence” that hosts training programs for employees. The company would also set up a waste management system to dispose of its own manufacturing waste. At an average salary of $59,600, the new job roles would include operators, maintenance, engineers, finance and more. The company already has 610 employees outside of Colorado and is also considering Texas and North Dakota for the new project. It is rare to offer both job growth and strategic fund incentives at the state level, but OEDIT staff recommended both tools be used because of the company’s strategic location in Pueblo, its size and its ties to sustainability and the manufacturing sector. They also said it can be difficult to find localities that

can come forward with a sizable local match, which the strategic fund dollars rely on. Shaw said that Pueblo established a cash incentive fund decades ago that will allow the locality to offer about $16 million in cash incentives. Those have to go toward capital investments such as land, building equipment or rent abatement, he said.

Sick Of Colorado’s Worker Shortage? New Alliance Invites Businesses, Industry To The Table A group of five business-focused organizations has launched a new coalition that aims to ease lingering workforce shortages in Colorado, a problem that nearly half of the state’s businesses say has prevented them from filling open roles. The coalition named five ways that they intend to work with post-secondary education and government entities to improve the state’s workforce pipeline. It’s calling on business and industry leaders to reach out now with opportunities to further discuss their goals.

Do You Have A Passion For Manufacturing?

Colorado continues to have about two job openings for every unemployed person, a challenge that has persisted as one of the top concerns for the state’s business owners this year.

Want To Help Machine Shops In The Rocky Mountain Region To Gain Exposure Through Advertising?

While more than 90% of jobs in Colorado require some kind of post-high school education, just 50% of high school graduates attended a college in 2020, she said. More than that, only 15% of the state’s working-age population has earned a credential higher than a high school diploma but lower than a bachelor’s degree — the kind of credential needed for about half of all Colorado jobs.

BLAZING SPEED INCLUDED. INTRODUCING THE NEW

VARIAXIS C-600 With its robust C-frame construction, lightning-fast 4.5 second chip-to-chip tool changer, double-ended tilting table and enhanced rapid traverse rates – which add up to shorter non-cut times for the lowest part-cycle times – the VARIAXIS C-600 handles the most demanding jobs with its flexible, automation-ready design and a new MAZATROL SmoothAi CNC made for 5-axis machining. And it can handle what your rotary table HMCs take multiple setups to do in as few as one.
