Editors Corner Steve Jobs stood in front of the 2005 Stanford graduating class and said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do,” but how does enjoying your work really lead to success in the workplace? It just makes sense that being happy at work and loving what you do is an overall productivity booster and enhances performance. People who enjoy their jobs are more likely to be optimistic, motivated, learn faster, make fewer mistakes, and make better business decisions. And as an employee or a business owner, arguably, one of the biggest advantages you can have over your competition is actually enjoying what you do. Loving your job is not just an added bonus to success, but it is often an important precursor. If you enjoy what you do, working at it is easier, and your motivation to improve is natural, rather than forced. In a perfect world, each of us would have entered into a field that we have always been drawn to, and we would live happily ever after doing exactly what we have always envisioned. The reality, however, is that most of us will find ourselves doing things that we didn’t exactly envision for ourselves. That is okay, because often what we thought we were drawn to in a career at a young age isn’t what we’d find fulfilling years later. I purchased the magazine 16 years ago after a career with large tech corporations, including Intel, Motorola, and AT&T. I never imagined I would love or find success in publishing a precision manufacturing magazine. And yet, I can say that these past 16 years have been my most enjoyable work years ever. I own the magazine, so perhaps the mere fact of ownership translates into higher satisfaction and a love for the profession. But it is more than that…writing about small machine shops and putting together a magazine is about the closest job I could have that I could liken to a hobby. We’re finishing up 2021 and while I am not advocating changing jobs, if you are truly unhappy, it is likely the prudent thing to do. We all know that loving work is a good thing, but few people take the necessary steps required to make the change. In fact, a Gallup poll suggests that 70% of Amerian workers aren’t engaged with their work. In our post pandemic environment, there has never been a better time to find a new job, one that you love. Who knows, it could even be a new position within your current company. Remember, the highly successful are outworking their competition. This added effort and productivity is essential. You will not reach levels of greatness if you do not work at it. Period. This work is not easy, but those who enjoy their jobs will be more motivated to put in the work. In closing, I wish you all the happiest of holidays and a fantastic 2022. Do what you love, not just in life, but in your work. We spend too many hours doing it year in and year out to not find it rewarding. Until next issue and next year, I wish you the best. And as always, God bless our troops, our Front liners, and our manufacturing industry.

Announcements & Releases Groundbreaking for Industrial Supply Company’s New Location in Elko, Nevada Held In November Last month, Industrial Supply Company began construction on a 12,000 square-foot permanent home for its branch location in Elko, Nevada. Founded in 1916 in Salt Lake City, Industrial Supply has been serving the mining, construction, and other industries in northern Nevada since 2012, when it first began leasing its current space on Industrial Way in Elko. Randy Evans, Industrial Supply Company’s Co-Chair and President of Construction, Mining, and Safety, said that the new facility is an important step in the company’s nine-year history with the community. “Our goal has always been to be a true local provider to the industries in and around Elko, and as our customer base has grown, so too has our commitment to the city,” said Evans. “Our new building is an investment in this community, and an indication that we will be here for a long time.” Since it first opened its Elko location, the branch office has grown to include 12 full-time employees who serve about 200 customers. Providing more than double the amount of square footage the company now has, the new building will be better able to meet the needs of the company’s existing customers, and to serve more businesses in the future. Industrial Supply’s Regional Sales Manager, Tyler Whipple, noted that the larger building will allow the company to increase the amount of inventory it has on hand, such as hard-to-find items, personal protective equipment, and key products that support critical mining and maintenance operations. “This past year has taught us the value of having supplies near where they are used, and this new facility means that our customers know they can get what they need when they need it,” said Whipple. In addition to increased warehouse space, the new building will include a dedicated room in which industry specific safety and other trainings can occur. A large front counter area will provide space for resources and customer support. “This new building will put Industrial Supply in the best possible position to support our customers in northern Nevada, invest in the community here, and meet our pledge of superior customer service,” said Mr. Evans. Industrial Supply Company has served the construction, manufacturing, mining, government and industrial community since 1916. This Utah based maintenance, repair and operational, and production (MROP) distributor has seven locations in the Intermountain West, which serve Wyoming, Nevada, Utah and surrounding areas. Northern Utah Chapter of the NTMA (National Tooling & Machining Organization) Says Check out our upcoming events! The pandemic has really put a damper in the way we function today ; our industry is not exempt. Besides the human aspect that has touched every one of us, the consequences are that many shops are struggling to stay afloat because of a broken supply chain that has affected materials, tooling, deadlines, shipping, the delivery of consumer goods in general and the availability of skilled workers. What are we going to do about it? When a situation doesn’t typically favor our way or we are either powerless or too lazy to do anything about it, we resort to complaining. Complaining is not the answer, it solves nothing! It makes us unhappy and turns everyone off. So, on the topic of skilled workers, can we start developing new ones? Let us look at what is out there and how we can affect the situation in a positive way and really do something about it! I serve on advisory boards and visit schools. The main comment I hear is that the industry is not doing enough. Machine shops are not reaching out to the schools enough. My vision, as I serve on the NUNTMA board is to create a network of likeminded shops, schools, machine and tooling vendors and suppliers that have a stake in the game. If we all start investing time and expertise and start collaborating to train, teach, expose, and incentivize the younger generation to see machining as a great career, good things will happen. But it is an uphill battle. Trying to get the state tech colleges to teach the same curriculum or at least be on the same page is like wanting lube oil to mix in the coolant tank without issues. Government financial support and unrealistic expectations Announcements Con’t Next Page

Announcements Continued are not on par with what is needed to produce machinists. School districts invest funds in archaic technologies because they do not know better. It is challenging indeed. What if we went to instructors, deans of manufacturing, CTE heads and government reps and voiced our concerns and offered our advice and help? Could we attend classes and job and STEM fairs and make presentations on what a machine shop looks like today? Gone are the days of the oily, greasy, noisy, unsafe machine shop. How many people really know that? I strongly believe that today’s shop is nothing like your grandpa’s shop. It is up to all of us to promote it! So, reach out to the nearest school and offer the CTE groups help. Present and offer shop tours. You never know what or who will come out of these efforts. Of all the people I have met and voiced my concerns to and offered to help, I have yet met one that doesn’t welcome the help. Also, great relationships are created, and doors begin to open when shops work hand in hand with educators.

Do you have an apprenticeship program where you are willing to train and pay young prospects without expecting immediate results? Do you have enough toys (Robots, automation, 3D printing, CMM’s, CAD/CAM, solid modeling, vision systems and such) to entice the Nintendo

The Hurco Control has the flexibility you need for the high mix of parts that comes through your shop. Equally powerful for NC and Conversational Programming (with the added bonus of NC/Conversational Merge), the Hurco Control reduces setup time so you can make more chips. Whether you’re a baby boomer, a millennial, or a Gen X-er, time is money. Even though Bob (left) and Charley (right) are from different generations, they are both machinists who appreciate the importance of CNC technology that’s designed to make shops more productive and more profitable. generation to come and give machining a try, just because it is COOL? If not, then maybe it is time to start investing in the next generation of machinists. Skills USA and the National Robotics League are two other areas we can make a difference. They are no longer viewed as the junior Olympics of machining. In my involvement with these young people competing the last few years, I see a lot of potential for future machinists. So, check these programs out and support them. Seeing the awe on their faces when they create CNC code or move models around or make chips fly on a CNC, well, that is priceless. Whenever you find yourself repeating the same complaint about the labor shortage, STOP! And start getting involved. Build bridges, reach out, promote machining, hire young potential, invest in technology and people, teach, serve, and help those instructors that are trying to develop new machinists. We are in this together! Do Something about it! Your next machinist may be as close as your nearest school. PUMA GT Series: A Classic Htc Design That Machinists Depend On What do a Ford Model T automobile, Levi’s jeans, Moby Dick and just about any Beatles song have in common? They’re all considered to be “classics” – items judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and an outstanding example of their type. By that definition, the PUMA GT Series has to be considered a classic in the field of machine tools. If It Ain’t Broke… A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

14 • Nov / Dec 2021

Introduced in the 1980s, PUMAs have proven to be real workhorses in the manufacturing industry. Today, thousands of them can be found in shops big and small across the USA. Customers are big fans of the older machines and when the time comes for replacement or expanding shop capacity, they want a machine that gives the same feeling of confidence. No worries. The PUMA GT Series fits the bill, spec for spec. Basically, it’s a brand-new version of the PUMA they bought 15 years ago. For those reasons, we get a lot of repeat orders. A lot. Just like earlier models, the PUMA GT Series machines have boxway design that dampens vibrations and feels right at home with heavy interrupted cutting. All are also available with live tooling capability. We have added a few technological upgrades, like a brand-new FANUC controller with iHMI and Doosan EOP package. The GT series has never been decontented (had features removed) as other machine tool builders might do to make their machines more cheaply. The consistency of quality and standard features are greatly appreciated by our customers. Who Buys One (or More)? Besides replacing older machines, given the range in bed sizes and chuck sizes of the PUMA GT series (see the complete lineup), they’re likely to find a new home anywhere. It’s truly a universal machine. One first tier automotive company owns over 150 of them. They’re great for small shops just starting out, too. The PUMA GT’s compact footprint and intuitive usability make it an instant hit with owners and operators.

Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 Chip Shortage Has Manufacturers Turning to LowerTech Models Manufacturers struggling with a shortage of semiconductor chips are finding workarounds, executives said, redesigning products, shipping uncompleted units and focusing on older, lower-tech models. After pushing for years to add digital features like screens and wireless connectivity, makers of appliances and vehicles are reversing, temporarily, to continue supplying products to dealers and consumers amid a shortfall in semiconductors that industry officials project will last into next year. Boss Products typically used hand-held controls with computer chips to angle snow truck blades. The company, which is owned by Toro Co. TTC -0.26% , hasn’t been able to find enough chips. So employees started looking for ways to use fewer of them. Some remembered that joysticks, without computer chips, were used to control these features until electronics became affordable and commonplace. “Let’s go back to the old design,” said Rick Rodier, a Toro executive. “It still does the job. It was done this way for 30 years. It was reliable. It was fine. It was just a little more cumbersome to build and assemble.” A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

2021

As the global supply-chain snarl has evolved from a short-term blip into a long-term challenge, some companies are redesigning their products and shifting production lines as they work to counteract the chip shortage. Manufacturers say broader supply-chain issues and the lack of computer chips won’t be solved in the near term. “It’s not going to go quickly away overnight,” said Marc Bitzer, chief executive officer of appliance maker Whirlpool Corp. The semiconductor shortage has weighed on car production this year and is spreading to other sectors, hitting makers of glass and paint who supply industries that use computer chips. T3 Motion, which makes electric stand-up vehicles for airport and university security officers, is redesigning its products to use fewer computer chips and electronics. William Tsumpes, the company’s CEO, said instead of multiple components to control features like batteries, lighting and sirens, the redesigned vehicle will use a centralized, integrated board with a single processor to control all the parts of the vehicle. This move will eliminate the other

Ed Wernsing, who owns an appliance store in Litchfield, Ill., said a washer manufacturer he works with is changing production plans because of the computer-chip shortage. Alliance Laundry Systems LLC told customers in an October memo that it was suspending production of four of its Speed Queen models to focus on increasing output of others. Mr. Wernsing said the company is continuing to make two washer models: a top-of-the-line version and a pared-down model that has fewer electronic components.

We are a full service job shop, providing as much or as little project involvement as required – from tool and die design to finishing and assembly.

Alliance Laundry Systems said it was working hard to increase production volumes. On the Speed Queen website, the simpler model is described as being like a “classic washer at grandma’s.” Source: WSJ

This year, as the country continues to face a labor shortage, celebrating those who have chosen careers in manufacturing during Manufacturing Month is especially important. According to a 2021 study conducted by Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute, the manufacturing skills gap could result in 2.1 million unfilled jobs by 2030. While the COVID-19 pandemic has certainly played a role in the industry’s present worker shortage, there are still 5 million fewer Americans working in manufacturing now than there were 20 years ago. If this trend continues, the worker shortage has the potential to cost the U.S. economy up to $1 trillion by 2030. We can’t just look at this from a cost perspective; a manufacturing labor shortage also can cause detrimental physical impacts to the country. As a manufacturer and leading technology grid innovator improving power reliability and delivery worldwide, S&C Electric Company and its team members know the impact a single piece of equipment can have on the power grid. The equipment manufactured by the team at S&C helps keep the lights on for neighborhoods and critical infrastructure around the world. It is crucial for electric utilities to have access to this equipment to maintain power delivery, especially when faced with severe weather. A manufacturing worker shortage has the potential to impact equipment suppliers’ ability to meet utility demand. This could mean longer and more A Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

frequent outages, further impacting the lives and safety of residents across the country. This is a repercussion the country can’t afford. Over the same 20 years that manufacturing jobs have declined, manufacturing capabilities have advanced at an impressive rate. With the addition of technological improvements and automated systems, manufacturers can do more than ever. These advancements have also changed what manufacturing jobs look like. While we continue to see a worker shortage in the manufacturing industry, the industry itself is growing. New jobs are opening every day because companies are increasing their output. Some of the biggest misconceptions regarding manufacturing jobs are the work is dirty, the day-to-day role is repetitive, and automation is obsoleting the need for manual roles. Despite an increase in automated systems, people are still a critical component of the manufacturing process. Automation Continued Page 20

nization is actively recruiting women into its program and women are involved in implementing the program as well. WFW, a state-licensed 501(c)(3) nonprofit school, offers two courses, Machining for Warriors and Welding for Warriors, which provides certification after four months of training. In addition to these courses, there are paths to a variety of credentials in advanced manufacturing. IndustryWeek spoke with the group’s director of operations, Keshia Javis-Jones, as well as Bria Bohanon, currently a student in the welding program. Attracting women to the program sometimes is just a matter of communication, Javis-Jones points out. “While there are more women in the program now than when I first joined, I think it’s the way that you communicate how veteran’s skills can transfer into career opportunities, is how we can bring in more women.” The opportunities for women are many, says Javis-Jones. Not only can they perform jobs that are hands-on like welding and machining, but there are managerial opportunities in manufacturing as well. A Different Interview Approach To recruit veterans into manufacturing, the interview process needs to be altered. “It’s very important for employers to understand that a candidate has not done job interviews for a long-time, especially if it’s someone who had a full military career. Companies ask very specific questions, looking for a particular answer, but the candidate might not understand that. It would be better to let the candidate talk about their skills and how they handled their responsibilities.” She also recommends that potential employers widen their views. “While someone might have come through an infantry program and trained on weapon systems, it doesn’t mean that’s the only skills set they have. Many have responsibility for millions of dollars worth of equipment and everyone is trained to be leaders, whatever role they have.” Javis-Jones points out that in the many conversations she has had with HR representatives across manufacturing companies she advises having a conversation, not an interview, and this will lead to finding the right person for the job. In the military, there are very specific steps to move up in the ranks. Each person knows exactly what they have to do and the time frame. This might not be the case for manufacturing companies and so Javis-Jones recommends offering a detailed layout of what the first year will look like and what expectations are of them. “This

method would help a veteran plan a path at the company understanding what their milestones and goals are of within that company. Career planning was top of mind for Bohanon. After four years in the military, working with missile systems, she was deciding if she want to continue in the military or pursue a different career. “I enjoy working with my hands and after doing research, taking personality tests and looking at a variety of options, she chose to earn a certificate in welding through Workshops for Warriors. She had six months on her military contract when she started the program deciding that she wanted to go straight from the military to her new career. And she has a career path planned for herself. After a few years of experience in welding, either in the automotive or aerospace sector, she wants to become a certified welding inspector. After that, she wants to become a welding engineer. While women might first think of a career in welding, Bohanon met an army welder even before she started her military career. “I didn’t even know there were women welders, so she sparked that little interest in my head and four years later, I was able to think about that again.” Moving into the Field Three times a year, WFW, holds a career fair at their San Diego location. Due to COVID-19, some of the fairs were virtual. Companies that recruit, as well as support WFW, include BAE Systems, Boeing, Dassault Systemes, Ford, General Dynamic, Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co., United Technology and many others. “It’s important for manufacturing companies to know that, although we’re located in southern California, this population is willing to travel for the right career opportunities,” says Javis-Jones. “They’re used to being relocated Another consideration in terms of a career path, is understanding the financial situation that veterans are in. “While most candidates are thinking about salary, for a veteran pretty much the whole dynamic of their life is changing and that of their family as well. This is a new concept for them since in the military many things are taken care of for them.” So clearly understanding benefits will be an important factor in making a decision to choose manufacturing as their next career. Spreading the word to women veterans that manufacturing is a great next career for them, is at the top of JavisJones’ to-do list. “We are making progress in attracting more women to the field and I feel we will continue to see more women enter the field.” By: Adrienne Selko, Industry Week A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

In 2019, Lockheed Martin Space won a second contract adding production of up to 22 additional GPS III follow-on satellites, what became known as GPS IIIF. The contract included a series of options for ordering satellites that could make the work worth as much as $7.2 billion. The GPS satellite constellation, started under the U.S. Air Force, supplies location signals used in civilian timing and navigation as well as for military uses.

Their signals are the backbone of a multibillion-dollar civilian industry using location-based services, and the satellites supply signals the military uses for precise navigation, missile guidance and targeting, and other capabilities. The option Space Force exercised this fall is the first time more than two GPS III satellites have been ordered at once. The $238 million per-satellite cost also is less than what Space Force has been paying. In October 2020, when the Space Force exercised a contract option for two satellites, it paid $255.5 million each for the 13th and 14th GPS space vehicles, nearly 6.9% more than those just ordered.

Space Force spends $737M on Colorado-made GPS satellites Lockheed Martin Space will build three more global positioning satellites for the military under a $737 million contract option the U.S. Space Force. The Jefferson County-based space company, a division of Bethesda, Maryland-based Lockheed Martin Corp., will build the 15th, 16th and 17th GPS III satellites at its headquarters campus. Lockheed Martin Space has been designing and building the modernized GPS III satellite fleet since 2008, when the company landed contracts to build the first 10 upgraded GPS III satellites. The satellites improve signal power, accuracy and jamming-prevention capabilities for military use and have other features that previous GPS satellites did not. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Early in their development phase, the U.S. military spent nearly double that much for each satellite. Starting with the 13th GPS III satellite, the orbiters will be made using a new combat version of its LM-2100 satellite body, which, among other improvements, is designed to make future in-orbit satellite servicing possible. The GPS IIIF’s anti-jamming capabilities for the military on those future satellites can also be made 60 times more powerful in focused geographic areas, an ability that meant to help in combat zones.

The GPS satellites are a core program for Lockheed Martin Space, one involving hundreds of workers at the company’s headquarters campus southwest of Denver and elsewhere.

THE FUTURE OF CNC

Lockheed Martin Space built an $80 million facility on its campus that’s dedicated to GPS III satellite production. The company has been the sole provider of the military’s modernized GPS satellites. Earlier GPS satellite production for the Air Force seesawed between Lockheed and Boeing. After Lockheed Martin Space ran into delays building the first GPS III satellites, the U.S. military explored competing bids for the 22 satellites that became the GPS IIIF contract. Ultimately, that work stayed with Lockheed Martin Space when it won the 2018 contract.

Metalformers Continue to Experience Supply Shortages and Other Challenges Metalforming companies anticipate little change in business conditions during the next three months, according to the November 2021 Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) Business Conditions Report. Prepared monthly, the report provides an economic indicator for manufacturing, sampling 105 metalforming companies in the United States and Canada. PMA’s November report shows that 55% of metalforming companies predict no change in general economic activity in the next three months (increasing from 48% in October), 25% forecast an increase in activity (compared to 27% in October) and 20% expect a decrease in activity (compared to 25% last month). Fifty-nine percent of respondents reported an increase in lead times, compared to 58% in October. “PMA members are experiencing brisk business activity but continue to face challenges sourcing needed raw materials,” said PMA President David Klotz. “PMA is concerned with the continued steel supply shortages, which will now only be exacerbated with the new infrastructure bill signed into law earlier this month. In addition, we are concerned that the

deal reached this month between the United States and European Union that replaces the Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs with a tariff-rate quota could lead to market manipulation and allow for gaming of the system that could put our members and other small and medium-sized manufacturers at a disadvantage. Our team in Washington, D.C., will continue to advocate for the termination of these unnecessary and damaging trade restrictions on steel and aluminum.” Metalformers expect a slight dip in incoming orders in the next three months, with 31% forecasting a decrease in orders (compared to 25% in October), 36% predicting no change (compared to 43% last month) and 33% anticipating an increase in orders (compared to 32% in October). Current average daily shipping levels rose in November, with 49% of survey respondents reporting an increase (compared to 41% in October), 31% reporting no change (compared to 32% last month) and 20% reporting a decrease (compared to 27% in October). Four percent of responding metalforming companies had a portion of their workforce on short time or layoff in November, the same percentage reported the previous two months. Equipment Finance Industry Confidence Higher in November The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation (the Foundation) releases the November 2021 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI). The index reports a qualitative assessment of both the prevailing business conditions and expectations for the future as reported by key executives from the $900 billion equipment finance sector. Overall, confidence in the equipment finance market is 64.6, an increase from the October index of 61.1.

When asked about the outlook for the future, MCI-EFI survey respondent Dave Fate, Chief Executive Officer, Stonebriar Commercial Finance, said, “While I believe the equipment leasing and finance Industry will always perform well through various cycles, the last few months have shown a number of interesting data points. Strong corporate earnings continue to drive the equity markets. The current rise in Inflation rates is alarming and seems like it will be with us for a while. Continued issues with the lack of skilled and non-skilled labor are the number one concern of most of our customers. Supply chain issues are causing real disruption and seem to have no viable plan to alleviate them. The rest of Q4 and into Q1 will be very interesting as we navigate through year-end closing in our industry and the Christmas holiday season.” November 2021 Survey Results: The overall MCI-EFI is 64.6, an A Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain • 2

With The Help Of Federal Agencies, U.S. Manufacturing Can Get Smarter And More Competitive Ever since 2006, when the term was first used at a National Science Foundation workshop on cyberinfrastructure, business writers have been full of praise over the glowing promise of “smart manufacturing” — the idea that if you appropriately integrate a whole series of advanced digital systems, you can dramatically improve every aspect of a company’s operations. Smart manufacturing is a lofty goal and sometimes difficult to grasp, both because its constituent technologies are quite complex and because the concept itself is continuing to evolve in terms of what it is and what it does. Nevertheless, it is an aspiration shared by many in the business world. And it is one being quietly embraced by the U.S. government as part of an emerging national economic strategy. An important part of the effort to make American manufacturing more globally competitive has been the formation of government-funded institutes during the last few years. Their missions involve various aspects of developing a toolkit that will be needed to advance domestic productivity and lower the costs of manufacturing. The Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII), for example, was created to enhance U.S. manufacturing productivity, global competitiveness and reinvestment. Nearly 100 of the U.S.’s top companies and institutions, including Microsoft, Honeywell, Johnson & Johnson and my company, have partnered with CESMII to accelerate their smart manufacturing goals. Members come in all shapes and sizes — from system integrators to product vendors, end users, academic organizations and Fortune 500 companies — and have reaped the benefits of smart manufacturing, including reduced energy costs, improved performance and increased agility. If success in global competitiveness is going to be determined by whoever has the lowest labor costs, the U.S. is doomed to failure. The only way for it to grow sustainably and compete effectively is by making U.S. manufacturing smarter. The U.S. can win by outinnovating its competitors, not by starving its workers. What you’ll discover if you have high levels of automation and run your supply chains intelligently, is that cheap labor is not the deciding factor in being competitive; there are much bigger areas of operation where savings are available. Automation here is very important. At the same time, however, the way supply chain MANUFACTURING SW • 55 • Nov / Dec 2020 managementA Zis taught and practiced in the 2

Register at nuntma.org/upcoming-events U.S. is flawed. It is largely predicated on two defective principles: first, that you should seek out the cheapest labor abroad; second, that you should reduce your inventories to the point where just-in-time delivery eclipses the need for you to invest in reserves of material supplies and component parts. Why are these principles flawed? Consider what Covid-19 did to supply chains. By seeking out and locking in suppliers from low-cost regions overseas, American supplier capacity was essentially hollowed out, leaving U.S. manufacturers no alternatives when their overseas vendors’ personnel got sick. Then, when those suppliers became unable to deliver, the lack of inventory essentially shut their customers’ factories down. In other words, supply chain mismanagement made U.S. manufacturers much more vulnerable to serious disruption and considerably less resilient than they really needed to be. And it is a failure that many large companies are privately acknowledging. While federal initiatives have been created to build a smarter, more competitive American manufacturing sector, there are ways that U.S. manufacturers can help themselves to innovate

and level the playing field with global competition. Companies must take steps to digitally transform their operations by emphasizing smart data capturing systems. Simply having the data is useless, which is why manufacturers need to adopt technology that can standardize and contextualize the data across locations and data silos. By giving data context, manufacturers will have the proper insights into their material flow which will help reduce errors, predict trends and set them on the path to achieving smart manufacturing goals. Additionally, companies must embrace advanced technologies such as machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) if they want to keep a competitive advantage. Businesses need to leverage ML and AI to become more predictive and agile across their manufacturing operations. But finding the right talent to oversee AI and ML initiatives is proving difficult, especially given the current labor shortage across the United States and specifically in manufacturing. None of this, of course, should deter companies from accelerating their digital transformation as the benefits far outweigh the risks of inaction. Today, we stand on the cusp of an epochal industrial revolution, one that’s happening thanks to U.S. government agencies, as well as manufacturers who are educating themselves on the steps needed to innovate their operations and thus become more competitive. The impact of this won’t be felt overnight, but with the help of federal agencies and a willingness from manufacturers to embrace digital technology, I am confident that American manufacturing will become more globally competitive. The October consumer inflation report from the Labor Department showed prices for washers and dryers were up 30.1% last month from the pandemic’s start, with prices for furniture up 12% and prices for new cars and trucks up 11.3%. Further, shortages of some manufactured items are creating inflation elsewhere. The dearth of new vehicles has made it hard for rental-car companies to restock their fleets, which is a big part of why it cost 49.2% more to rent a car or truck in October than before the pandemic. Fewer new car purchases by rental companies in particular has led to fewer available used cars, and used car and truck prices have risen 44%. For a lot of people, the argument that these price increases are transitory has worn thin. Policy makers and economists were saying that supply-chain problems would be starting to ease this fall, and now they are expected to persist until next year. With inventories low and what appears to be a lot of unsated demand out there, it is easy to imagine prices continuing to go up. But imagining that supply-demand imbalances will persist, and then finding that they won’t, is a common occurrence. Pig breeders and cattle ranchers have regularly responded to high prices with production increases that initially aggravate shortages but then lead to gluts in the so-called hog and cattle cycles that drive huge swings in pork and beef prices. A similar dynamic occurs in shipping costs, and ship prices. And back in May, when prices were surging, it didn’t seem as if framinglumber prices were going to fall by more than half—but then they did. In the year ahead, even slight relief of some supply-chain issues could have significant effects. For example, there are a lot of partially built vehicles that car makers have parked around the country which will be rolling into dealerships once necessary chips are installed. In a recent note, the Bank for International Settlements pointed out that the

building of precautionary stockpiles of components by some manufacturers might be exacerbating shortages—a phenomenon that might also paint a false picture of underlying demand. Earlier this fall, many retailers were imploring consumers to get their holiday shopping done early, lest supplies run out, yet last week Walmart, Target and TJX all said they are well stocked for Black Friday. Another place inventories might be higher than readily perceived is in people’s homes and driveways. Adjusted for inflation, consumer purchases of durable goods—long-lasting items including bicycles and television sets—rose 7.7% last year from 2019, and in the first nine months of this year were up 26.6% versus two years ago. Even pent-up consumer demand for new cars might be less than seems apparent: While production problems have pushed new car and truck sales well below their 2019 levels this year, exclude fleet sales to rental companies and the like, and they are only down a bit. If Covid-19 risks continue to diminish in the months ahead, allowing people to resume more of their prepandemic activities, more spending might be shifted away from goods toward services. Lower Covid-19 risks would also help alleviate some supply-chain snarls, especially in countries outside the U.S. that are major sources of manufactured goods and components. At the least, prices for some items could stop rising and become drags on inflation. And prices for some goods, such as used cars—which have accounted for about a percentage point of the 6.9% increase in overall consumer prices—could fall. By this time next year, inflation might not seem like nearly as big a problem as it does right now. Source: WSJ A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Gold Giant Becomes First To Use Self-Driving Trucks In Mine But Experiences Bumpy Transition Self-driving trucks are now hauling ore at mining gi a nt N e wmont Corp.’s biggest gold mine in Australia, completing a $150 million transition to using autonomous vehicles started there last year. It’s a first for a gold mine worldwide, a change the Denverbased company (NYSE: NEM) predicts will increase efficiency and extend the life of the mine. But using self-driving haulers hasn’t come without difficulties. Newmont this month began fully switching to using 36 large, autonomous haulers made by Peoria, Illinois-based Caterpillar Inc. at the Boddington gold mine in Western Australia. Tom Palmer, Newmont president and CEO, called it an accom32 Nov / Dec

Boddington was Western Australia’s largest gold producer in 2020, delivering 670,000 ounces and 56 million pounds of copper. The mine employs 2,000 people southeast of Perth. A handful of open pit mines digging other materials have made similar switches, but Newmont is the first gold miner to start relying on autonomous haulage.

We offer a variety of services, including:

A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

“The scale and long life of our operations enables Newmont to implement leading technologies to promote both safety and productivity,” he said in a statement. “We look forward to leveraging this project and our commissioning experience at our other operations and projects around the globe.”

2021

The operation is moving fewer tons out of the mine to be processed than was hoped, some of which is related to adjusting the new autonomous haulage system in difficult conditions, the company said. Adopting self-driving at Boddington came during a stretch of unusually severe weather and rain for the region, Newmont said, and there were operational delays related to moving deeper into the pit mine. Boddington is now expected to produce 140,000 fewer ounces this year than the 830,000 ounces the company previously projected, a nearly 17% reduction. Newmont has previously forecast an eventual 35% or larger financial return on the autonomous-hauler investment, because they will make the mine operations more efficient and extend the life during which it’s economically viable. Palmer noted that the autonomous system adoption was completed on time and under budget, and he said it will rate as a proud achievement in the company’s 100-year history. “The record implementation of this project is a tremendous example of Newmont’s trademark ability to set and achieve ambitious goals,” he said. Newmont said it would work with mine employees and unions to retrain haulage truck drivers at Boddington to work on keeping the new autonomous system running smoothly. The company operates major gold mines and claims in Australia, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Suriname, the Dominican Republic and Ghana. It employs about 35,000 people worldwide and is the world’s largest gold producer by volume after a pair of multibilliondollar transactions in 2019 that reshaped the global gold industry By Greg Avery – Senior Reporter, Denver Business Journal.
