Customer-Centric Is The Renewed Focus At Phoenix Heat Treating

“Success is still too often defined as having a college degree, and that often results in the lack of investment in career and technical education programs,” said U.S. Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez.

Investments in apprenticeships pay off for not only workers and employers, but also taxpayers. Increased spending on apprenticeship programs is more than offset by higher tax revenues and reduced spending on public-assistance programs and unemployment insurance.

Bypassing an expensive, lengthy degree program and opting for an apprenticeship program that propels a learner toward a hands-on career has many benefits. and in addition to practical training, these programs can foster an entrepreneurial mindset in students. These programs can help nurture self-reliance, creativity, and a proactive approach to problem-solving – all of which are qualities that empower individuals to run their businesses confidently.

The bipartisan National Apprenticeship Act of 2023 will invest more than $3.85 billion over 5 years to increase access to apprenticeship programs. The proposal would create nearly 1 million new apprenticeship opportunities on top of the current expected growth of the apprenticeship system. It would also yield $10.6 billion in net benefits to U.S. taxpayers in the form of increased worker productivity and decreased spending on public-assistance programs and unemployment insurance.

According to the Department of Labor, 93 percent of people who complete an apprenticeship are employed upon completion, earning an average wage of above $77,000 annually in their first years. Additionally, businesses earn $1.44 back for every dollar invested toward their apprentices in a registered program.

By increasing investments in the national apprenticeship system, the National Apprenticeship Act of 2023 will also begin to bring America’s investments in apprenticeships in line with countries around the world. The U.S. spends only about 0.1 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) on workforce training and employment programs, while our peer industrialized nations spend roughly six times as much as a share of GDP.

I scoured the internet looking for apprenticeship programs in our field of precision manufacturing. Lockheed Martin is promoting their ‘Advanced Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship Program (AMTAP), touting “No degree, no problem”, and they have opportunities in PA, AL and CO.

BASF also advertises its North American Apprenticeship Development Program (NAADP), and states that you can work at a number of its manufacturing plants. Surprisingly, there weren’t more Fortune 500 companies advertising their apprenticeship programs.

Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are often seen as models to emulate in the world of apprenticeships, and they do a superior job of helping to create a positive perceptions of them. We would do well to learn from these models, particularly with respect to helping parents and students alike to see the enormous benefits of a career in a manufacturing. Q3 Update to the 2023 Economic Outlook Forecasts 0.9% Expansion in Equipment and Software Investment and 1.6% GDP Growth as Recession Looms

The first test of a new, lightweight F-35 helmet was successful, according to the prog ram office, a promising sign that the Pentagon can qualify and implement all three fixes to the jet’s escape system by the end of the year.

The report, released today, reveals that economic growth in Q1 was stronger than

Highlights from the Q3 update to the 2023 Outlook include:

The U.S. economy has been stronger than anticipated driven by a robust labor market and resilient U.S. consumers. Inflation has improved but remains above target, and a looming credit crunch and slower global economic growth remain significant headwinds.

Equipment and software investment growth is struggling amid volatile industry conditions at the midway point of 2023 after decreasing by 4.5% in Q1. Although conditions may have improved somewhat in Q2, they are far from ideal. As a result, the annualized growth forecast for equipment and software investment is just 0.9%.

The manufacturing sector’s measures of activity have held firm in recent months with solid production and sales in Q2. However, several leading indicators point to weakness later this year, including reduced demand from abroad, though the recent boom in manufacturing construction is a notable exception that should continue.

Main Street has held its own during one of the most turbulent periods in recent economic history. However, a growing share

of small firms are reporting weaker sales, tepid capital investment plans, and rising borrowing costs. The looming credit crunch expected later in 2023 is likely to disproportionately impact small businesses.

The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady at its most recent meeting, the first such pause in the current tightening cycle. However, Chair Powell and the FOMC have made it clear that their work is not done and that additional rate hikes are likely later this year.

The industrial production gauge includes productivity in three sectors: manufacturing, mining, and utilities. Manufacturing production (which excludes mining and utilities output) rose 2.7% in March after falling 3.7% the month before. Mining production improved 2.7%, while utility output fell 11.4% thanks to unseasonably warm March temperatures. Manufacturing output rose 1.9% at an annualized rate.

$1 Billion Battery Complex In Buckeye Secures Most Of Funding Needed For Construction

Idaho-based KORE Power Inc. is expected to receive an $850 million loan from the U.S. Department of Energy for its new battery factory in the Phoenix metro.

The battery cell developer announced recently that it has received a conditional commitment for the loan through the department’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) program, which provides loans for eligible vehicle and qualifying components manufacturing.

The funds will be put toward the construction of KORE Power’s battery cell manufacturing facility called KOREPlex, which will total 1.3 million square feet in its first phase near State Route 85 and Baseline Road in Buckeye, about 40 minutes west of downtown Phoenix. The first phase will represent an investment of more than $1 billion and produce 6 gigawatt-hours of high-density cells to support electric vehicles and energy storage systems in the U.S. using nickel manganese cobalt and lithium-ion

iron phosphate.

The company has been working through the application process for the federal program for the past two years and has to meet certain requirements to close on the loan, which is expected to happen sometime this year.

Last year, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that was signed into law removed the $25 billion cap on the total amount of ATVM loans that were established under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 and appropriated $3 billion that will remain available through 2028 for the costs of ATVM loans, according to the Department of Energy.

“The goal of this legislation at the IRA level and associating processes and programs is to make sure we’re bringing U.S. companies with U.S. product to deliver those products to U.S. users,” Jay Bellows, president of KORE Power, told the Business Journal. “This has been our direction from the very beginning, is having U.S. battery manufacturing here so we’re not dependent on the rest of the world.”

The new battery factory has been in the works for several years including a two year-long search for a site. KORE started site work on its property in Buckeye along State Route 85 at the end of last year but now plans to move forward with vertical construction after the massive federal loan is secured. Construction of the facility will bring 700 jobs and is being led by Yates Construction.

KOREPlex is expected to start production by the end of 2024 or early 2025 and could eventually expand to 2 million square feet and 18 gigawatt-hours annually as demand for product increases.

After he first picked up a phone call in his grandfather’s office, Andres Sisneros knew he was part of a company bigger than himself.

Since the 1950s, his family’s company, Sisneros Bros. Mfg., has had a legacy in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry in New Mexico.

Sisneros, who is currently the president of the New Mexico-based company, believes their “revolutions” materialized with word-of-mouth projects as the catalyst.

He first cites the example of his company’s work with Walmart, which started with a conversation at a bar in Texas. Sisneros said a contractor for the Walmart Supercenters frustratingly expressed his need for industrial suppliers and received a recommendation in return.

“This guy is like, ‘I think I know somebody in New Mexico [where] we just bought ductwork, maybe you should give them a try.’ And next thing you know, we’re getting pretty much every single Walmart Supercenter in the Southwest,” Sisneros said.

Where a bar in Texas opened the door to the industrial sector, a contractor observing work done at one of the Walmart Supercenters in the mid-1990s started their journey in industrial ductwork.

He was impressed by Sisneros Bros.’s work in volume control dampers and reached out with an opportunity to work on Intel’s job site in Rio Rancho, Sisneros said.

After outshining a direct competitor in Oregon in delivery, quality and price, Sisneros Bros. built a valuable relationship with the tech giant for

California Aircraft Parts Provider Unical Moves Headquarters To Phoenix Metro

Unical Aviation Inc., a leading aircraft parts and components provider, has relocated its corporate global headquarters out of the greater Los Angeles area to the Phoenix metro with plans to hire 80 new employees.

Unical, which serves the global commercial aerospace market, started moving into the newly developed Falcon Park 303 facility in Glendale earlier this year after securing a full-building lease in 2022.

In addition to housing its corporate operations, Unical will use the warehouse to store 85 million aircraft parts and components and is expected to start filling customer orders and shipping from Glendale this summer.

It is also looking at adding Part 145 repair operations at the location in addition to its existing 80,000-square-foot Part 145 repair station in Mesa. Between its Glendale and Mesa locations, Unical will employ about 250 people total including the 70 to 80 new employees it plans to hire across warehouse, finance, aircraft repair, human resources and IT positions.

Unical is the first tenant for Falcon Park 303, which includes a second building that totals about 326,018 square feet and was developed by St. Louis-based US Capital Development. Andy Markham, Mike Haenel and Phil Haenel of Cushman & Wakefield are the leasing brokers for the industrial project.

Unical Aviation consolidated a few California locations to Glendale but will keep its footprint in California with its tear-down facility that’s located in San Bernardino and employs about 60 people.

Industrial absorption, or the space leased minus what was vacant, totaled 1.5 million square feet in the second quarter of 2023 in the Phoenix metro, a decrease from the previous quarter’s 4 million square feet, according to CBRE Group Inc.

The vacancy rate also increased from 3.3% to 3.4% over a quarter across the metro but in the southwest Valley submarket, which has the lowest rental

rates in the area, the vacancy decreased to 2.9%, CBRE data shows.Earlier this year, the Glendale building fully leased to Unical sold to Cohen Asset Management Inc. for nearly $82 million.

The Arizona Technology Council and SciTech Institute said the state’s technology industry started with aerospace and defense manufacturing.

ASM America buys land in north Scottsdale

Last month, ASM America Inc., the Phoenix-based U.S. arm of an international semiconductor equipment supplier, purchased nearly 24 acres near the southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Loop 101, according to real estate database Vizzda.

ASM America bought the land for more than $33 million, which amounts to more than $1.38 million an acre, from Hayden Loop 101 Investors LLC, an entity connected to Scottsdalebased De Rito Partners Development and Van Tuyl Cos., according to the Arizona Corporation Commission.

ASM America purchased the land in an all-cash deal, according to an affidavit of property value recorded on Aug. 15 in Maricopa County.

Adapting to New Possibilities

Iver Bowden, a partner and designated broker at De Rito, confirmed the deal and told the Phoenix Business Journal that ASM America worked with Jonathan Keyser of Valley tenant brokerage firm Keyser Commercial Real Estate on the deal.

It isn’t immediately clear what ASM America plans to do with the land. The company supplies wafer processing equipment to computer chip manufacturers.

ASM America’s headquarters is at 3440 E. University Drive near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which is its only location in North America. ASM has offices across Asia and Europe, including its headquarters in the Netherlands, according to its LinkedIn page.

In 2020, the 130,000-square-foot, two-story Phoenix building that’s home to ASM America sold for $27 million to Los Angeles-based Mapleton Investments.

Futuro Houses sells first UFO house kit to customer in Roswell, NM

US Lighting Group Inc. is shipping the first kit to build one of its UFO-style houses to — wait for it — Roswell, near the U.S. military base that has long been associated with sightings of unidentified flying objects.

The Ohio-based maker of Cortes Campers travel trailers and Fusion X Marine speedboats has sold one of its Futuro Houses LLC shell kits to a customer near Area 51.

Sales of Futuro Houses kits and Cortes Campers trailers are expected “to drive record sales this year and next,” said Anthony Corpora, CEO and president of US Lighting, in the statement.

US Lighting Group reported sales of $1.1 million for the year ended Dec. 31, up more than 16 times from $67,000 in 2021. The company that sold its first Cortes Camper in 2022 reported a loss of $9 million, or 9 cents a diluted share, last year.

US Lighting, which exhibited a Futuro Houses model at this spring’s Cleveland Home and Remodeling Expo in Cleveland, is beginning by selling kits for the houses that can be customized for buyers or distributors, Corpora said.

“In the future, we will sell fully equipped, self-sustaining homes that are functional as well as aesthetically designed,” he said.

US Lighting makes its UFO houses out of carbon fiber core material and molded fiberglass instead of wood, so they are easy to transport and assemble, Corpora said.

These materials also make the houses durable and “impervious to mold, mildew, rot, rust or decay,” he said.

Once assembled, Futuro House shells offer 600 square feet of space, making them a fit for off-grid or conventional housing, businesses and rental opportunities, US Lighting said.

The company is developing a dealer network and directto-consumer marketing channels to sell the house kits, and eventually finished houses that include interior walls and appliances. Mesa Semiconductor Equipment Manufacturer Proposes New Building Near Falcon Field Airport

The owner of Western Semi Solutions is looking just down the street to build a new East Valley facility.

The company, which has been in business for more than 25 years in equipment manufacturing to support the semiconductor industry, is proposing to build a new 75,000-square-foot industrial building on a 5.7-acre site on the northwest corner of McDowell and Greenfield roads in Mesa.

Western Semi Solutions has an existing site at 2692 N. Norfolk, which is directly north of the site of the proposed building and minutes away from Falcon Field Airport.

Western Semi Solutions is owned by Steve Javinett, who purchased the vacant parcel in September 2021 for just under $2 million, according to real estate database Vizzda.

Since the start of the year, Western Semi Solutions’ new building has been making its way through Mesa’s city channels. The city’s planning and zoning board recommended approval of the project in May.

The project was then introduced at Mesa City Council

on July 3 and now is set for final approval at a July 10 meeting.

Western Semi Solutions is working with ADM Group Inc. as the project architect and applicant for a rezoning approval with a planned area development overlay and a site plan review.

Western Semi Solutions joins several other firms that support the semiconductor industry and have recently opened or announced plans to bolster operations in the East Valley.

In the last month, Moov held a grand opening for its new office at 100 Mill on Tempe Town Lake; Cactus Materials started production in two fabs; and Foresight Technologies looks to double its headcount and will expand its facility to support the development and production of high-purity fluid delivery equipment.

Elsewhere in the East Valley, Benchmark Electronics Inc. in March opened its 64,000-square-foot precision technologies facility in Mesa that will create 100 jobs; Edwards opened a 200,000-square-foot space in Chandler that could create 500 new jobs earlier this year; and Virginia-based Bechtel opened an office in Chandler to serve manufacturing and technology customers with a focus on semiconductors and electric vehicles.By Ron Davis – Phoenix Business Journal

Becoming the most customer centric heat treater in the country is a lofty goal but one that Phoenix Heat Treating has its sights set on. Phoenix Heat Treating (PHT), located in the heart of Phoenix, Arizona, has served various industries since it opened in 1963. Originally established in a 700 square foot space, PHT has grown to two buildings totaling 43,000 SF on 4 acres of land. PHT is a legacy of knowledge passed down from many generations, going back to the late 1800’s and the blacksmith trade. Charles Wesley Sr, was a Prussian Swordsmith. Charles immigrated to the U.S. in 1887 and opened his first heat treating facility in 1915 in Milwaukee, Wesley Steel Treating. He was also one of the founding members of the Metal Treating Institute. Charles’ grandson, Chuck Hushek, moved his family to Phoenix in 1957 and opened PHT in 1963. This year, the company is celebrating their 60th year of service in Phoenix and is run by its 2nd generation owner, Peter (Chuck’s son), and his son, Charlie Hushek. Heat treating is in their blood!

Not only does generational practical wisdom get utilized in their processing strategies, but Peter is also a degreed metallurgical engineer. It is estimated that less than 15% of commercial heat treaters have a metallurgist on staff. It is this combination of experience that has given Peter the nickname of Metal Whisperer. They have developed a reputation for being able to solve difficult processing scenarios and often receive parts from across the country from customers looking to achieve outcomes that they have otherwise been unable to achieve.

Charlie says that Pete understands metal from the inside out and it makes perfect sense to him. Early on, Charlie didn’t plan to join the family business as a 5th generation heat treater. In fact, he studied construction management in college, and pursued this passion building hospital rooms after graduating from college. A couple of years later, Pete asked his son to join the business, and Charlie left construction management. He first worked 2nd shift unloading baskets from furnaces. Charlie moved from this arduous task to day shift; first in the shop, then in customer service, then into other departments, learning

how Phoenix Heat Treating operated in every aspect of the business. Charlie moved into the General Manager position when the company lost their General Manager to Covid. Charlie was instrumental in the new ERP implementation, Pete says.

Charlie excels at a number of things, including communication with customers, suppliers and employees and a comfort level with adopting new technologies. “There is always a learning curve for family members working together but we seem to have found our stride and we actually enjoy working together. We have developed a respect for each other’s strengths,” said Charlie.

Phoenix Heat Treating has carved out a niche in the heat treat industry for doing the difficult orders but also for the wide variety of processes they are able to perform. Raytheon Wins Fresh Contract To Build Hundreds More Sidewinder Missiles For Us, Foreign Militaries

Raytheon’s Tucson-based Missiles & Defense division will be building hundreds of new Sidewinder aircraft missiles under a $263.72 million contract modification.

The AIM-9X Sidewinder missile is a joint project of the U.S. Navy and Air Force, and Raytheon has been a part of it for more than two decades. This contract modification calls for Raytheon to build 571 of the rockets for the U.S. Air Force and Navy as well as for foreign military customers. Work is expected to be finished in August 2026.

The Navy will receive 91 of the Sidewinders, while the Air Force will receive 257 and foreign customers will receive 223. Those foreign customers were not identified.

Raytheon describes the AIM-9X Sidewinder as a “triple-threat” missile that can be used on several different aircraft and can be used for air-to-air, surface-attack and surface-launch missions without modification. The new orders are for the Block II variant, which Raytheon says has improvements for handling and safety and electronics updates. In addition to the tactical missiles, the contract modification also calls for

delivery of 48 training missiles, and a large amount of support equipment such as containers, target detectors, guidance units and more.

Besides the Sidewinder deal, Raytheon Missiles & Defense has also received the following contracts in recent weeks:

• Raytheon was awarded an indefinite-delivery/indefinitequantity contract of up to $621,400,000 to maintain the equipment, facilities, and personnel for upgrades, repairs and other work on Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicles that are designed to protect the U.S. from long-range ballistic missiles.

• Raytheon was awarded a $10,052,688 contract with the Air Force for support services for the High-Speed AntiRadiation Missile targeting system, including repairs.

• Raytheon was awarded a $15,988,766 fee modification option on an earlier Navy contract for Standard Missile-2 Block IIIC low rate initial production.

• Raytheon was awarded an $88.68 million modification to a previously awarded Missile Defense Agency prototype agreement, allowing the defense contractor to continue to develop and refine its Glide Phase Intercept (GPI) concept. The Glide Phase Interceptor project is a joint effort between Raytheon and Northrop Grumman. The two companies won enhanced contracts for that work in the summer of 2022, and a contract modification this past spring. BHS Kinetic Of Singapore Sets Up First North American Office At Skysong Development

Another international company working with semiconductors sees an opportunity in setting up shop in metro Phoenix.

BHS Kinetic, a Singapore-based firm, has opened its first North American office at SkySong 1 in south Scottsdale. The company has been in business in Asia since 1975.

“This new U.S. operation will allow for BHS to support its semiconductor clients in the country with installation of equipment,” said David Tan BHS Kinetic General Manager. “It also strategically positions BHS to expand its transportation and warehousing service lines.”

Tan said the company has just a handful of people working locally working out of a small office space. Down the line, Tan said the company will look to add between 30-50 employees and could eventually expand its office footprint.

“BHS’s presence at SkySong will undoubtedly contribute to the growth of the region’s already flourishing semiconductor ecosystem, creating new opportunities for collaboration and job creation,” said Scott Cooper, Scottsdale’s acting economic development director, in a statement. Tan said the company worked with the Greater Phoenix Economic Council to make

connections in the local market and helped find its first office in the United States.

“The addition of BHS Kinetic into our region will contribute to a crucial element of the semiconductor ecosystem that is rapidly growing in greater Phoenix,” said GPEC President and CEO Chris Camacho in a statement. “With its new home at SkySong, BHS is at the center of regional research and technology.”

The White House has designated Phoenix as a workforce hub to help meet the demand for qualified and diverse talent in semiconductors, renewable energy and electric vehicles. Nippon Express U.S.A., a Tokyo-based logistics company that specializes in the semiconductor sector, recently established a new Mesa warehouse.

The entire SkySong project is expected to have an economic impact of $58.2 billion over the next 30 years, according to a study completed by Elliott D. Pollack & Co. in 2021. SkySong is a public-private partnership with Plaza Cos., ASU University Realty, Holualoa Cos. and the city of Scottsdale. A sixth building is in the cards, but the developers need between 100,000 to 140,000 square feet of the building pre-leased before moving ahead on construction.

SkySong 5 broke ground in July 2018 and was completed the following summer. Beyond SkySong 6, there are some possibilities for smaller office buildings that could be build-to-suit for tenants near SkySong 1, located on the northeast side of the development. SkySong 1 broke ground in 2007.

Solar and Storage Companies to Add Over $100 Billion to U.S. Economy as a Result of the Inflation Reduction Act

Since the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) passed one year ago, U.S. solar and storage companies have announced over $100 billion in private sector investments, helping bolster the American economy, according to new analysis released today by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA).

Solar and storage manufacturing is now surging in the United States, as 51 solar manufacturing facilities have been announced or expanded in the last year.

“The unprecedented surge in demand for American-made clean energy is a clear sign that the clean energy incentives enacted last year by Congress are working,” said SEIA president and CEO Abigail Ross Hopper.

“This law is a shining example of how good federal policy can help spur innovation and private investment in communities that need it most. We are unleashing abundant clean energy that is creating jobs and capable of delivering affordable, reliable power to every home and business in this country.”

These new and expanded solar factories will invest nearly $20 billion into American communities and will amount to 155 gigawatts (GW) of new production capacity across the solar supply chain. These announcements include:

• 85 GW of solar module capacity

• 43 GW of solar cells

• 20 GW of silicon ingots and wafers

• 7 GW of inverter capacity

By 2026, the U.S. will have over 17 times its current manufacturing capacity across modules, cells, wafers, ingots, and inverters when these announced factories are in operation, which is enough to supply a majority of solar projects expected to be built in the U.S.

The company was founded by Fred and Josephine Drawert over three decades ago; and at the time Fred was a 54 year old experienced Journeyman Tool & Die Maker. Fred had earned his Journeyman card through a 4 year apprenticeship at Ford Motors in Chicago. He responded to an ad from AiResearch/Honeywell and the Drawert family made their move to Arizona in 1966.

Over the next couple of decades, Fred continued to hone his manufacturing skills, until one day, in 1988, he and Josephine made the decision to be in business for themselves. The company, which they named ‘Tooling Molds West, Inc.’ opened for business in a 600 square foot space, which was a portion of the building that one of Fred’s previous clients owned. Fred says, “We gave them a discount on their parts and they gave us the space.” He adds, “Josephine and I were employee #1 and #2, and our space was so small that when I was working, graphite dust would go all over her, the paperwork and her desk.”

land next door to where they were renting in Tempe. There they custom built where they reside today, in their 10,000 square foot facility.

Fred says, “In the early days we were just a mold making business, and when some of our customers, including Motorola, asked us for help with parts that needed to be machined, we made the decision to expand with machining. Some of our first machines were the Haas VF-1 vertical mills, which we still machine on today.”

David and Linda transitioned to running the business in 2000, and at the time, the company owned 3 CNC mills, 2 which were Haas, as well as 2 EDM machines. They grew the business to where they now have 9 Haas CNC mills, 1 EDM, 1 CNC EDM and 2 Haas CNC Lathes. David said, “We have amazingly talented, highly skilled engineers, machinists & mold makers that make this a successful family business.” The industries they serve are military, aerospace, semi-conductor, automotive and entrepreneurs.

While David manages the machine shop, Linda handles all the office responsibilities. She was instrumental in the company’s certification to ISO 9001: 2015, NIST compliance and working towards achieving Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC), which is fast becoming a Department of Defense (DoD) requirement.

David and Linda are preparing the next generation to keep the company strong and continue to grow into the future. Josh has proved his machining and programming abilities. Jesse, is the general manager and David’s eldest son. While Jesse has experience in machining, he finds much more enjoyment in the office. He takes his job seriously while he learns the presidential responsibilities. Both sons started early as teenagers helping here and there in the business.

David says, “Haas does such a good job of training future machinists on their machines, with the Gene Haas Foundation which subsidizes the purchase of Haas machines into educational institutions. When I first started at Gateway Community College, all the machines but one were Haas machines, and everyone

fought to get the Haas machines. This helped me to learn the Haas machines and made me comfortable purchasing them for our business.” David says, “We recently added capacity for our customers with the Haas ST-20Y lathe with live tooling. It is a rigid machine, with a large bar capacity, superior cutting performance, and a host of productivity-enhancing options.”

Lucid Cuts Prices On Electric Vehicles

Lucid Group Inc. cut the price of its Air electric vehicles, just ahead of the company’s release of its second quarter financials, which fell short of Wall Street expectations.

The move by the electric vehicle maker follows similar recent EV price-cutting moves from Tesla and Ford as part of a limited time offer. Lucid reduced the retail price of its Air Pure sedan from $87,400 to $82,400. It also slashed prices of its Air Touring and Grand Touring by $12,000 each to $95,000 and $125,600, respectively, according to the company’s website.

Lucid’s price cuts could be a sign the company is facing a problem with demand amid rising competition in the electric vehicle industry, Barrons reported. Lucid’s lower prices for its Air Pure sedan puts the company in competition with Tesla’s Model S sedan, which starts at $88,490.

Tesla slashed prices for its Model S luxury sedan earlier this year, while Ford Motors also cut prices of its electric F-150 Lightning trucks in July and its shares dropped 6% in response, according to Barron’s.Lucid is planning to introduce more affordable electric cars to challenge Tesla and its price cuts could give an indication of whether buyers are willing to switch brands, the Barron’s report noted.

Lucid, which manufactures its electric vehicles south of Phoenix in Casa Grande, has struggled to increase sales since last December when

it offered a 10% discount for customers to reinstate lapsed orders, the Business Journal previously reported.

Lucid reported in July it delivered 1,404 cars in the second quarter, falling short of the 1,873 projected by Wall Street. It produced 2,173 cars at its Casa Grande facility in the second quarter, compared to 2,314 in the first quarter.

Lucid said, however, it’s on track for a production target of delivering more than 10,000 cars this year, though it recognizes it still has “work to do to grow our customer base.”

“During our second quarter, we achieved several major milestones, including signing agreements to enter into a long-term strategic partnership with Aston Martin,” Peter Rawlinson, Lucid’s CEO and CTO, said. “We look forward to exciting new products in the second half of this year, including the planned start of production of the Lucid Air Sapphire and the Lucid Air Pure real wheel drive, plus the highly anticipated unveiling of our new SUV, Lucid Gravity, forthcoming in November.”

Recession Worries Are Fading For Many Businesses. But One Number Isn’t Budging.

After months of uncertainty and recession fears, business leaders are showing more optimism about the economy. But their confidence in their own company’s performance isn’t showing similar gains.

That was a big takeaway from the JPMorgan Chase 2023 Midyear Business Leaders Outlook, which found 45% of midsize business leaders anticipate a recession before the end of the year, down from 65% six months ago. Meanwhile, the percentage of midsize business leaders who were pessimistic about the global economy fell from 60% to 39% in the latest survey.

The increased confidence — which comes as the stock market has been on a hot streak — bodes well for the remainder of the year. Many businesses had been worried that economic concerns would spark cutbacks in spending and lead to revenue challenges at a time when companies are faced with a credit crunch and thinner access to capital.

But increased confidence in the global economy hasn’t directly coincided with confidence in their own businesses. About 67% remain confident in their own

company’s performance for the next year, about the same as six months ago. Additionally, 52% are expecting increased profits, only a slight uptick from 51% six months ago.

Ginger Chambless, head of research for JPMorgan Chase Commercial Banking, said consumer spending and other tailwinds led the economy to a stronger first half than expected. In turn, that has reduced recession expectations. That’s not to say it’s all positive news.

Price problems linger

Inflation continues to be a major concern for midsize businesses. About 79% said the cost of doing business has risen in the past six months, although that is down from 91% six months ago.

The sentiment comes as overall inflation declines from the 9.1% yearover-year increase in the Consumer Price Index seen in June 2022. The

Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 3% year-over-year increase in the Consumer Price Index for June 2023. That compares to a prepandemic range of 1% to 2.5%.

About 75% of business owners said they were likely to continue to raise prices to mitigate costs.

Despite some national signals of a softening labor market, talent remains an issue for many businesses.

About 22% of businesses cited labor shortages as their biggest external threat, followed by inflation and competition.

“I think it’s very consistent with what we are seeing in the macro data as well — continued strength in the labor market,” Chambless said.

Marcum-Hofstra CEO Survey also shows confidence

The latest Marcum-Hofstra University CEO Survey also showed a noticeable uptick in optimism in the last few months, with the biggest gains in construction, professional services and technology sectors — while the health care and retail sectors saw a dip.

The percentage of CEOs who said they were “very concerned” about a recession dropped from 46.5% in November 2022 to 26.4% now. The percentage of CEOs expressing no concern about a potential recession grew from 6.3% to 15.6% over the same time.

“Our latest CEO survey shows that optimism is on the rise, but it’s clear that these leaders are keenly aware of the challenges ahead,” said Jeffrey Weiner, chairman and CEO of Marcum. “From managing economic uncertainties and grappling with talent shortages to mitigating the impact of rising operational costs, CEOs will need adaptability and grit in this fl uid business landscape.”

Even with optimism about the overall economy rising, concerns remain about the job market.

About 75% of Americans surveyed in an April Morning Consult poll said they are worried about layoffs. About 44% were worried about job losses at their own company specifically, and 39% were worried about losing their own jobs.

However, jobseekers are still seeking out new jobs and big career changes, according to CompTIA’s Job Seeker Trends tracking survey, which reported that 27% of the labor market reported actively pursuing a new job or career change in the past 90 days. Denver Precision Products Announces New Machinery Purchases

Maxeon Solar Technologies Ltd.’s announced it was making its first expansion into the United States in Albuquerque, promising to bring 1,800 new manufacturing jobs with it. New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said the facility would bring in upwards of $4 billion in economic impact over the next decade.

It’s a big deal for Albuquerque and a bigger deal for Mesa del Sol — a development to the south of the city that promises to be a center for economic drivers.

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said part of the reason for the quick timeline was Maxeon’s commitments to its shareholders. He added Albuquerque and New Mexico’s ability to move at the fast pace Maxeon needed was a core reason for their decision to land there.

The bulk of these manufacturers are small businesses, the report found, with 86.5% employing fewer than 50 workers.

Though the workforce’s sector took a hit early in the pandemic, with more than 2,500 jobs lost from Q4 2019 to Q3 of 2020. the industry “surged back,” the report states, with manufacturing representing the second-largest number of all jobs from August 2020 to August 2021.

Sandia National Labs has been a partner with Maxeon in the past, mainly to test the company’s solar panels. Mulligan said one of the company’s leading scientists, in fact, did his postdoctoral research at the labs.

Maxeon branched from San Jose, California-based SunPower Corp. in 2020. The company currently has plants in Mexico, Malaysia and the Philippines.

The state’s top manufacturing-related cluster was boat building and repairing, which represents 5,111 jobs, followed by precious metals, at 2,826 jobs.

“This is, to our knowledge, the single biggest reflection of the national policy with respect to re-shoring that we discussed with the president,” Keller said. “This is the first example in America of a company coming from Asia back home to America.”

The state “doesn’t make it easy to do business,” Steve Perry Sr., vice president of Darlington Fabrics, said in the report. “But our proximity allows us to help each other. We have access to our legislators and a great support network.”

Scottsdale-Based Crow Industries Looking To Build Robotic ‘Labor Force’

A Scottsdale-based robotic systems startup is among 10 companies nationwide that recently completed the Techstars Industries of the Future accelerator program.

Crow Industries, which specializes in using robots to collect data from extreme environments for mining and defense applications, spent more than three months in the hybrid accelerator, splitting time between Scottsdale and the program’s headquarters in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Techstars Industries of the Future is intended for early-stage startups focusing on emerging technologies in artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, climate and clean energy tech, future of work and mobility.

Crow Industries met with more than 70 mentors and gained additional expertise in business development, product-market fit and raising capital during the Techstars accelerator program, said James Crowell, founder and CEO of Crow Industries.

The program culminated with a demo day event in Knoxville where Crow Industries pitched the company to potential investors, he said.

Crow Industries is building autonomous robots to boost production and improve safety in the mining sector and other applications.

The company developed an advanced 3D mapping robot called “Fenris” that collects several types of data 10 times faster than traditional methods, Crowell said.

The company aims to create an autonomous robotic “labor force” by installing sensors and control systems on haulers, loaders and excavators that mining industry workers can control and supervise even when off-site, he said.

“We’re starting with advanced mapping robots and then working our way up to earthmovers over the next couple of years,” he said.

Prior to launching Crow Industries in 2018, Crowell specialized in development of polar, maritime, volcanic and space systems at research laboratories and NASA. Crowell said his idea for the company was initially sparked by his passion for space exploration and settlement.

“In order to be able to expand humanity beyond Earth, you have to be able to move all society and the first piece of that is mining.” he said. “... But the space industry is a long way off from being able to do large-scale mining operations on the moon or Mars, so as we were trying to figure out our path forward, we realized that there’s actually a lot of problems in the terrestrial mining industry. That’s where we kind of modified our approach and realize that we can become a really great mining company.”

Crow Industries, which was an Inno Pick category finalist for AZ Inno’s 2022 Fire Awards, has five employees and operates a workshop in Scottsdale.

The company, which has been bootstrapped aside from some angel investment and $120,000 from the Techstars accelerator, is planning to open a pre-seed funding round in the coming months.

Crow Industries completed the goto-market version of its advanced 3D mapping robotic technology and is looking to grow its customer base of mining companies in the Southwest, Crowell said.

“That’s our big push right now. We’re focused on reaching out to mines here in Arizona and throughout the American Southwest to help them with their exploration campaigns,” Crowell said. “Then, as we’re doing that, we’re building out our autonomy platform that we hope to start beta testing next year.” By

$322.5 Million Army Contract For Versatile Missile System

The U.S. military has awarded a $322.5 million contract to Raytheon Land & Air Defense Systems for tube-launched missiles for the U.S. Army.

Under the contract, the Tucsonbased division of Virginia-based defense giant RTX will produce tube-launched, optically tracked, wireless-guided 2B missiles for the Army, with work scheduled to be completed by the end of September 2026.

The missiles are part of Raytheon’s TOW weapon system, which the company describes as a longrange precision system that ground forces and others can use against tanks and other armored, wheeled and amphibious threats in any environment or condition. The extended-range missiles can be fired from a variety of launchers.

than 40 international forces and has been integrated on more than 15,000 ground, vehicle and helicopter platforms, Raytheon said. The company also said upgrades to the system mean it will be in use beyond 2050.

Raytheon was the only bidder for the contract, which was solicited online and announced Aug. 15.

On the same day, the Army also awarded a joint venture between Raytheon and Lockheed Martin a contract modification worth just under $117 million for lightweight command launch units for the Javelin missiles.

The two companies have been working together on the Javelin system, which is used by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps — as well as by foreign military clients — and is described by RTX as a guided munition that can be carried by a single soldier and used against vehicles, bunkers and caves.

The contract modification follows an earlier pair of deals in June worth nearly $71 million and a pair earlier in the year worth more than $32 million.

Raytheon, Northrop Grumman Win $81M Contract For Hypersonic Missile Work

Raytheon and Northrop Grumman, which have been working jointly on a hypersonic weapon concept, were awarded an $81 million follow-on contract from the U.S. military for continued work on the project.The joint effort centers around the Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept, or HAWC, for the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency and the U.S. Air Force. The two companies, both major players in the Arizona defense contracting scene, have been collaborating on the work since 2019, and have already completed multiple successful test flights.

Raytheon has its major missile manufacturing operation in Tucson. Northrop Grumman, also based in Virginia, has major operations in Chandler. Nearly all of the new work will take place in Tucson.

The latest deal will focus on reducing risk for future air-breathing hypersonic systems, said Raytheon, which is leading the project. The team will build and fly more HAWC vehicles and use data from earlier stages of the program to improve the weapon’s design and manufacturing, Raytheon said.

The HAWC vehicle’s overall design has been overseen by Raytheon, and Northrop Grumman has provided the scramjet engine. During testing, the HAWC has reached

speeds greater than Mach 5, or 5 times the speed of sound, for more than 300 nautical miles as it reached altitudes > 60,000 feet.

Scramjet engines work by using high vehicle speed to forcibly compress incoming air before combustion to achieve sustained high-speed flights — thus they are described as “air-breathing.” They run on a widely available fuel and don’t need onboard oxidizers, both of which make for a safe, efficient and tactically sized longrange hypersonic weapon.

The contract modification brings the total cumulative face value of the contract to $352.95 million from $271.95. The HAWC project will also bring airframe and engine design benefits to the U.S. Air Force’s Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile, or HACM — another joint project of Raytheon and Northrop Grumman, which were awarded a nearly $1 billion contract in September to develop.

Don Bevers started welding shortly after he graduated High School, and his racing career began just about the same time. Fast forward to 2006, nearly 50 years later, and Don was attending a Performance Racing Industry (PRI) trade show, a show held in Indianapolis, Indiana, that features the newest parts and technology. It is at this show that Don saw CNC machines in action, and in his words, “I was mesmerized with them.” In fact, when Don returned to Arizona, on a trip up from his hometown of Tucson to Phoenix, he met with machine tool dealers. “I wanted a used machine that I could purchase economically, and that I could convert to a CNC machine”, he elaborates.

One of the machine tool dealers Don met with was Richard White. “Richard helped me to see that purchasing a new machine, an economical one, would be the best decision.”

I mentioned that Don is a welder and race car driver. Today, Don is an NHRA record holder and remains active in the sport. Back in 2007, when the large machine was delivered to Don’s shop, which is located in the garage of his home, Don did not have any experience in machining. “With Richard’s help, I mastered the machine in a short time”, Don says. He adds, “I’ve seen the controls of other machines, and the Milltronics control is so much easier, so much more user friendly. This helped me to become proficient with the machine quickly.”

Once Don started machining manifolds on the Milltronics machine, he recognized the difference in quality versus his earlier manifolds. “I was building them out of sheet metal and it was not only extremely laborious, but the end product was not aesthetically pleasing”, he says, adding, “I even had a long term customer tell me that he could tell the day I transitioned from hand building to building parts on the Milltronics machine.”

Why International Companies Are Choosing To

Invest In Arizona

Last year, Taiwan-based chip company Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. announced plans to expand its footprint in north Phoenix from $12 billion to an estimated $40 billion to build its massive U.S.based semiconductor hub — one of the largest foreign investments ever made in U.S. history, and the largest ever made in the state.

The TSMC plan may be the biggest example of foreign investment in Arizona but it should come as no surprise that foreign investors have taken notice of Arizona, which is quickly emerging as a thriving hub for global commerce.

Arizona’s biggest trading partners remain Mexico and Canada, but in the last four or five years, Arizona has begun attracting the attention of European and Asian investors, said Christine Mackay, Phoenix’s economic development director. “We've come into a place where we've never been before in foreign direct investment,” Mackay said, adding that foreign investment in the state is now primarily focused on advanced manufacturing, especially semiconductors, batteries, electric vehicles and biotechnology.

Last year, expansion projects were announced by companies such as Switzerland-based Nestle, which announced a $675 million investment to build a factory in Glendale, and South Korean electronics giant LG Energy Solution, which invested $1.4 billion to build a high-tech battery facility in Queen Creek.

Foreign investors are attracted to the state for many of the same reasons domestic companies are flocking to Arizona: the state’s favorable regulatory environment, strategic geographic location, availability of land, amenable climate and a built-in talent pipeline to draw a skilled workforce. Another big draw has been government programs aimed at strengthening U.S. supply chains by bringing hightech manufacturing back to the states. The CHIPs Act, for example, was among the reasons TSMC decided to expand its Arizona operations.

Foreign investment isn’t just a boon for Arizona’s economy, it’s also a job creator. The TSMC fabrication plants (fabs) in north Phoenix alone will create 21,000 construction jobs and will employ an estimated 4,500 permanent workers. Today, foreign investment provides jobs for more than 133,500 workers in the state.

The surge of foreign investment in Arizona shows no signs of slowing down. As more companies set up shop in the state, they will contribute to job creation and economic growth, further cementing Arizona's status as a top destination for global commerce.

New Accelerators Across Arizona To Provide Advanced Training In Emerging Industries

Arizona workers outside of the state’s main urban centers will have more opportunities to get advanced technical skills training thanks to a pair of new accelerators announced by Gov. Katie Hobbs.

The first two programs, called Future48 Workforce Accelerators, are launching in Kingman and Yuma. They will be overseen by the Arizona Commerce Authority and are established in partnership with higher education and industry participants.

The accelerators are part of a $30 million investment by the state in 2022 to create up to six advanced manufacturing training facilities around the state in partnership with community colleges.

Hobbs’ office pointed out that manufacturing employment increased by 12% between 2017 and 2021, with demand continuing to increase thanks to expansions in sectors such as semiconductors, biosciences, battery and automotive, aerospace and defense, renewable energy and others.

Yuma’s accelerator is being launched in partnership with Arizona Western College along with TRAX International, the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground, General Motors Proving Grounds, the Gowan Co., Allo Fiber, D&H Electric, Sunday Electric, Yuma Electric and others.

Training there will focus on electrical technology, advanced manufacturing, broadband fiber optics, and solar installation in support of the region’s aerospace and defense industries.

A 5,600-square-foot expansion of the Wellton Manufacturing Training Center on the AWC campus will be built and is expected to be completed in 2024.

In Kingman, Mohave Community College is partnering on an accelerator that will support manufacturing, transportation and mining industries. A 30,000-square-foot facility will be built at Kingman Airport and Industrial Park and is expected to be completed in early 2025.

Industry partners for the Kingman accelerator include NUCOR Steel, Kingman and Mohave Manufacturing Association, Progressive Pipe, Arizona Sommers Cooling and Heating and others.The Future48 Workforce Accelerators are modeled after a program in Pinal County called Drive48. That program is a collaboration between

Virgin Galactic Expects 5 More Spaceflights In 2023

Virgin Galactic said it expects two spaceflights out of New Mexico’s Spaceport America in the third quarter of 2023 and three in the fourth quarter, following the space tourism company’s first private astronaut flight planned for later this month.

Doug Ahrens, Virgin Galactic’s chief financial officer, said that those five flights would be a mix of private astronaut and research missions. Virgin flew its first commercial research mission in late June with a crew of two Italian Air Force officers and one Italian researcher, a flight that had been delayed for years.

It’s now readying for its first private astronaut flight with three passengers, alongside a Virgin Galactic astronaut instructor, set to fly into the upper reaches of the Earth’s atmosphere on board its spaceship, VSS Unity. Virgin announced in mid-June the window for that flight opens Aug. 10.

Private astronaut missions are expected to bring in around $800,000 in revenue per flight for the company when fully occupied with four private passengers, Ahrens, Virgin’s CFO, said on the call. He added the company pulled in approximately $2 million in revenue in the second quarter and expects revenue of around $1 million in both the third and

fourth quarter of 2023, with capital expenditures of between $10 million and $15 million in the third quarter.

The bulk of Virgin’s growth in capital expenditures comes from the construction of the company’s spaceship assembly facility near Phoenix, Arizona and technology used in the design process for its Delta-class spaceships, Ahrens said. Virgin first announced the assembly facility last summer.

Those Delta-class vehicles are set to be the next generation of Virgin Galactic spaceships, enabling the company to fly more often once operational. Colglazier, Virgin’s CEO, has previously laid out a timeframe that would see initial testing of Delta-class spaceships in 2025 and the first of those spaceships in commercial service by 2026. He said that timeframe hasn’t changed; Virgin’s Arizona assembly facility is projected to be operational next year.

While general sales for seats on board VSS Unity are on pause, Colglazier said Virgin could reopen sales in “successive tranches” once the company’s Delta-class ships are closer to service. By

The Obituary Was Being Written For ‘Entrepreneurship.’ Then Covid-19 Happened.

New businesses are still going strong in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic — and economists see it as a sign of a resurgent innovation economy.

For years before the pandemic, Census data and other sources showed a decline in new businesses and a series of headlines that decried the “slow death of entrepreneurship” and “the mysterious death of Entrepreneurship in America.”

And the data reflected that — a stagnating number of new business applications every year, with the number of “highpropensity” new businesses, which the Census Bureau defines as those likely to create new jobs in the future, declining over time.

But the massive disruption brought about by Covid-19 reshaped the entrepreneurship landscape overnight. That, combined with increasingly lower costs to start a business and more Americans willing to take the risk, led to a massive surge in new business formations.

In July 2020, after millions of Americans were thrown out of work, new business formations spiked to 552,214, the highest month recorded by the Census Bureau since its data began in 2004. And while business formations have not been as strong as they were in 2021, Census data showed roughly 5 million new businesses

formed in 2022, up from about 4.5 million in 2021 and far above the 3.5 million before the pandemic.

In recent months, the Census Bureau has recorded more than 400,000 new business applications; before the pandemic, it was rare to crack 300,000. In June 2023, there were 465,906 new business formations, up from 438,798 in May and up from 427,241 the previous year.

Luke Pardue, a senior economist at payroll and benefits provider Gusto Inc., said the surge in new business formations is less of a blip and more of a sustained and higher plateau. That surge was driven not just by people seeking to capitalize on the Covid-19 disruption or from being suddenly unemployed, but by a diverse group of entrepreneurs more willing now than ever to take the leap into business ownership, he added.

And a breakdown of new business applications by county across 2022 shows much of the American South and Southwest is benefiting, too. The top 10 major American metro areas in terms of new businesses per 1,000 residents is dominated by Southern cities — with Miami at the top, followed by Atlanta and Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville in Florida.

contrast to the same data from 2010, which showed much of the new business formation was in the Mountain West and Pacific Northwest, although Florida still was a hot spot.

In many respects, the new business application data mirrors the socalled “great migration” of people moving from expensive coastal cities to cities in the American South and Southwest, although Pardue said that is not the biggest contributor to new business formations in those areas.

“It paints a picture not necessarily of people who had a business up in New York and are moving to Atlanta but people who live there who are really taking advantage of these opportunities and disruptions,” Pardue said.

But, Pardue said, the sustained surge in new businesses should not be underestimated — and has reversed a long decline in innovation.

“This is a huge deal, to see the return of entrepreneurship in America,” Pardue said. “It took a once-in-a-century, a once-in-a-generation pandemic that sparked a surged in entrepreneurship and dynamism, and we are starting to see that dynamism take hold as people take advantage of opportunities that they might not have had in the past.”

More companies are hiring workers on a contract basis, which often means that person is a small business.

“All of this stuff is coming together,” Richardson said. “You are seeing a lot happen that does present opportunities for dynamism, and I think we are just getting started with that.”

But there is a danger many workers will be left behind as the skills needed to survive in a new economy continue to outstrip the workforce, Richardson said. She said fewer prime-age adult men are participating in the workforce, and the number of well-paying jobs that require only a high school degree are fading away.

American Manufacturing Might Be Hitting A ‘Supercycle’ As Spending Skyrockets

Defense and technology firm

Leidos Holdings Inc. is spending $31.7 million to build a new manufacturing hub for its security systems in North Charleston, South Carolina.

The 150,000-square-foot-facility is the third of its kind in the United States and built with the express goal of bringing the company’s manufacturing abilities back to the United States. It will produce items for the company’s infrastructure customers, including in aviation, shipping ports and border crossings, when it is completed in 2024.

The Leidos project is among hundreds of manufacturing projects popping up across the country, partially the result of a series of massive spending bills passed under the Biden administration that has created the potential for what some experts are calling a manufacturing “supercycle” and manufacturing resurgence.

Spending has continued to rise as legislation such as the CHIPS Act, the Inflation Reduction Act and the sweeping infrastructure legislation passed within the last few years continue to pump money and tax credits into manufacturing and related projects.

“Investors are about to be schooled on of one of the most enduring but unappreciated facts of economic life: that no country in the world — including China — attracts as much foreign direct investment as the U.S,” said Joseph Quinlan, head of Chief Investment Office Market Strategy for Bank of America Corp., in an analysis. “We highlight this unknown known because, yet again, the world’s top corporations are beating a path to the U.S.”

He stressed a number of fundamentals that are helping drive the return of manufacturing spending to the United States, including U.S. personal consumption spending, with Americans accounting for 30% of global consumption, despite making up only 4.5% of the population. America is also a relatively easy place to do business with a large, skilled labor pool, transparent rule of law and cheap energy costs, as well as low corporate tax rates, Quinlan said.

That’s on top of what Quinlan called “mega-legislation” that’s unlocked hundreds of billions in extra spending. “America’s manufacturing base is on the cusp of a transformational do-

over, and foreign firms want to be part of the action,” Quinlan said. “This requires that firms be ‘inside’ or ‘in-country’ to qualify for massive government incentives from both the federal and state levels.”

Companies are scrambling to rethink and rebuild their global supply chains after the pandemic, and the U.S. has become the destination for foreign corporate investment, with the country drawing in 23% of total foreign direct investment, up from 15% one year ago. China’s share was a distant second, Quinlan added.

“We believe the U.S. is in the early stages of a manufacturing supercycle pivoting around renewable energy, electrical vehicles and batteries/charging stations, and semiconductors, in addition to rising spending in more traditional areas like ports, highways, grids, airports and the like,” Quinlan said.

He dismissed concerns about a potential “manufacturing recession” because industrial and other stocks have underperformed the broader stock market recently, saying the industry should take the long view as it takes years to spin up manufacturing.

And there is broad, bipartisan support for American government support of U.S. manufacturing, with 70% of Americans wanting the government to do more to bring back manufacturing to the United States, according to polling conducted by Morning Consult for the Alliance for American Manufacturing.

About 82% think the federal government should offer incentives to relocate their factories to the United States and 78% said the federal government should be required to buy American with its own purchases.

“American voters have made it clear that the federal government must do more to bring valuable manufacturing jobs back to the United States,” said Scott Paul, president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, in a press release. Overall,

cities and states across the country have been working to seize on the manufacturing moment after a long period of decline in some portions of the country. An analysis by the McKinsey Global Institute says restoring manufacturing growth could boost America’s GDP by 15% over the current decade, potentially creating 1.5 million new jobs.

And while the Biden administration has focused on the number of manufacturing jobs created — about 800,000 over the past couple of years — experts see an industry in which automation, technology and specialization will produce fewer jobs overall, but those positions will be higher paid.

That’s part of a long-term trend, with the share of manufacturing jobs as a percentage of the overall economy shrinking from a peak of roughly 39% in the 1940s — the height of World War II — to roughly 8.4% in January 2023.

Ongoing efforts by the U.S. manufacturing industry to develop the workforce of tomorrow received a significant boost with the announcement by the U.S. Department of Labor of $183.8 million in workforce development grants to help create and promote partnerships among educational institutions, companies and trade associations. The grants, together with the Labor Department’s announcement of plans to award an additional $100 million in grants to further promote apprenticeships, were applauded today by the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA) and the Precision Metalforming Association (PMA).

“There will be an estimated two million vacant manufacturing jobs by 2025 and the industry cannot close this gap on its own,” said PMA President David Klotz. “The federal programs announced today mean that the government is listening to our message that, for manufacturing to continue to drive the U.S. economy, this country must invest in helping manufacturers attract and train the next generation of workers. We encourage Congress to provide funding to expand these types of programs.”

“We are proud that in Arizona, NTMA is a recipient of one of the Labor Department’s workforce development grants,” said NTMA Interim President Doug DeRose. “NTMA and its chapters have made workforce development a top priority issue for more than a decade and these grants will help our efforts to close the skills gap in our industry. We applaud the Trump administration for continuing to make manufacturing and closing the skills gap top priorities.”

The Labor Department also made public a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to establish a process for the Department to advance the development of industry-recognized apprenticeship programs (IRAPs) that would enable manufacturing associations and others to apply to

the federal government to obtain the ability to certify apprenticeships themselves.

NTMA through its National Tooling and Machining Association Foundation and PMA through the Precision Metalforming Association Educational Foundation have spent millions of dollars over the years supporting workforce development programs and providing grants throughout the United States to attract, train and retain workers in the manufacturing industry. The associations look forward to working with local partners and national stakeholders such as the National Institute for Metalworking Skills to promote manufacturing careers, train American workers and develop a next generation of manufacturers.
