“Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.” — Henry Ford The glass is half full or is it half empty? I’ve taken time to listen to customers, suppliers, and colleagues. How do you see things looking for the remainder of 2022 and into the next few years? Some see a negative outlook with no end in sight. Others see activity, increased quoting, and are encouraged by this with expectations of better years going forward. Countless studies have shown that optimists do better in school, are more successful in their careers, and even live longer than pessimists. So, the question is this – Is optimism genetic? To some degree, it seems optimism is an inborn trait, a hidden but important part of some lucky people’s genetic code. Like several unpleasant mental states, such as depression and antisocial behavior, a tendency to optimism can be inherited, it seems. Several research studies have found that optimism runs in families, though none of the studies can determine which gene or brain chemistry is responsible. Still, the thinking habits we learn early on in life may be a far more important influence, many psychologists attest. Optimistic thinking is just an activity, like swinging a tennis racket or riding a bicycle. The area known as cognitive psychology is built on the premise that if you change the way people think, you can change their emotion and eventually their behavior.

Environmental or genetic or both? The most important thing to note is that we can all learn to be optimistic.

Kim Carpenter Gene Wirth

Optimists, psychologists agree, usually think that problems are outside of themselves, that problems aren’t permanent, and that only a small part of their world will be impacted. Pessimists, meanwhile, tend to believe that problems are their fault, permanent, and likely to impact most of their day to day life.

Optimism is more than just a positive mental attitude. It is not constantly saying positive things and hoping they will come true. True optimism is a frame of reference that governs how you look at the world. Optimism means having expectations, that for the most part, things will eventually turn out okay. Being optimistic means that you really believe you will be able to accomplish everything you want to do.

Denver A ‘Rising Star’ For Rapid Growth In Tech Jobs Amid Pandemic Denver has emerged as a rising star in the battle of the tech hubs, part of a trend of remote work expanding s o m e u rban opportunities that’s happening alongside the continuing dominance of coastal superstar cities. While established locales like San Francisco, Seattle, New York and Austin, Texas, continue to rule the tech employment sector, Sun Belt and Heartland cities like Denver and Dallas also have seen a significant surge in tech jobs over the past five years, a study by The Brookings Institution found. In 2020, amid the coronavirus pandemic, tech sector employment growth slowed in the biggest, most dominant tech centers while nearly half of the nation’s 83 other large metro areas saw their rates increase. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

6 May / June 2022

Overall, nine rising star cities — Denver; Atlanta; Dallas; Miami; Orlando; San Diego; Kansas City, Missouri; St. Louis and Salt Lake City — increased their share of U.S. tech job postings from 14.5% in September 2016 to 16% at the end of 2021. The report found that Denver, along with Miami, had particularly vibrant growth in hiring ads during the Covid-19 pandemic and added tech jobs at an annual growth rate in excess of 3%. Tech sector employment in the Denver-AuroraLakewood metro area grew from about 50,000 in 2015 to 64,000 in 2019, and despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, Denver’s tech employment continued to rise at a steady pace from 2019 to 2020, climbing 4.6% to around 67,000. The metro area has proven its ability to attract tech talent. Commercial real estate and investment firm CBRE’s 2021 Scoring Tech Talent report ranked Denver No. 12 overall in tech talent across North America based on an analysis of 13 metrics ranging from tech graduation rates, tech job concentration, tech labor pool size, and labor and real estate costs. The CBRE study found that Denver’s tech sector employment gain was driven by young talent A2Z MANUFACTURING SW •

moving to the city, and that local employers have been able to keep tech wages competitive, with an average pay of $107,481 ranking ninth highest in North America. Still to be seen is whether the shift to remote work during the pandemic will have a long-term effect on the geographic shift in tech employment. Some large tech employers such as Google are asking some employees to return in-person, with Google planning on a hybrid work week involving two days remote. Brookings cited forecasts that show that work patterns at least in the near future will likely follow a hybrid pattern requiring that tech workers appear in-office two or three days a week, limiting their ability to fully exit from established hubs. The U.S. Department of Labor recently reported that one-third of companies increased remote work for some or all of their employees during the pandemic, and that 60% of those companies expect to make those changes permanent after the pandemic ends. But Brookings said that while more widespread acceptance of remote work in the tech sector over time could lead to greater dispersion of workers and tech activity, and the shift to remote work during the pandemic may have played a slight role in job growth in the rising cities, the flow of workers away from high-cost metro areas has been modest thus far and does not seem to forecast a wholesale decentralization of tech. Leadership on Point: Managing through the Generational Divide It’s hard to keep them all straight – the Silent Generation, baby boomers, Gen Xers, GenZers, baby busters, millennials, iGen, Gen Alpha. Regardless of what you call them, or who falls into which generation, the issue is the same. How do we lead multiple generations in the workforce with different values, work styles and motivations? I am increasingly working with manufacturing companies in need of navigating culture issues that arise from a multi-generational team. Those leaders who understand the differences each generation brings to a workplace can learn to create a culture where all generations flourish together. Joe Yanda, a Gen Xer at 45 years old, is CEO of Lakeside Foods—an industry-leading producer of frozen and canned vegetables in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. He stepped into the CEO role in May 2021 and is the fourth generation of family members to run the company. Joe, who is one of our clients, is challenged with both managing older generations on the board, and the younger ones in the workforce. “I personally love engaging a broad range of generations for key discussions about where the company is heading and how the culture feels,” Yanda told me. “I get a kick out of hearing their perspectives because they are so different from my own.” What Are the Major Differences Between Generations? Hierarchy & Chain of Command: The differences in values and motivations show up in many ways in the workplace. For example, how people relate

to the hierarchy and chain of command. Younger generations don’t understand the traditional hierarchy within a company, something Yanda has observed. They wonder why they have to start out in a cubicle and work their way up the ladder to a large office with a nice desk. “It doesn’t make sense to them and it’s not what motivates them,” said Yanda. “In the past, employees would also be hesitant to come to me as the CEO with concerns or questions. Now I see a lot of younger employees coming to me directly if they have a concerns and questions.” Indeed, that can be hard for their managers and others who feel the chain of command is important to follow and a rite of passage to be able to talk to the CEO directly. Desired Culture & Workspaces: There are also differences in what is desired in the culture, including the office space. “The younger generation has such a different perspective of even the office space they would like to have versus a baby boomer or Gen-X’er,” explains Yanda. “They want flexibility in where they work, how they work and even the furniture they work in. As we redo our office space, we need to take all of these perspectives into account.” Work-Life Expectations: Perhaps one of the most challenging differences to navigate is that younger generations are often described as not as “loyal” to their company as previous generations. However, what if this was not really about loyalty at all, but more about the expectations younger generations have about the work experience? This difference often gets labelled as a lack of loyalty, which misses the bigger picture. Younger generations also have different expectations about work-life balance and the amount of flexibility that is offered to them. In terms of the evolution of organizations, expecting, or even forcing, more flexibility is not a bad thing. These are positive shifts in an organization’s evoluContinued next page A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

It’s easy to label younger generations as “difficult” or “less loyal” when in reality they are helping us grow and change our companies for the better. Perhaps they are only less loyal when viewed through the lens that is the mindset of older generations. They are redefining what loyalty means at work. Having multiple generations in a workforce is an opportunity to grow an organization’s collective thinking and capabilities. Younger people challenge the status quo of the longer-tenured employees. In return, more experienced employees have a lot to offer to younger generations. Leaders can’t expect only one generation to change to suit the needs of the other. It has to be a give and take if the entire organization is going to benefit. At Lakeside Foods, “Our oldest employee manages our youngest employee and does a fabulous job,” says Yanda. “This manager is the textbook example of how to be open and listen and make others feel empowered, heard, and that what they are doing is important. It’s partly his personality, but he also places a high value on mentorship and passing his legacy on to the younger generation.” The principles for managing multiple generations are really the same principles of good leadership. We have to be flexible, create meaning, resolve conflicts constructively, and be willing to listen to each other. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

Lakeside Foods embarked on its cultural journey after its leadership found “some of the older workers were having trouble managing some of the younger employees and having them feel valued and heard,” Yanda said. “They had different values and motivations.”

At Lakeside, like at many long-standing manufacturing businesses, working overtime and “doing whatever it takes” is a badge of pride. Legacy employees are accustomed to forfeiting their personal lives during the summer vegetable pack season. However, the younger workforce is not willing to do that and feels there is “something wrong with it.” This can leadFootprint to tension between the Sow Compact different generations. a handful of mostly coastal cities and urban areas. But that’s beginning to change according to a new report from the Washington D.C.based public policy think tank Brookings Institution. It tracked the growth and change of the tech sector, defined as a group of “advanced industries” such as computer equipment manufacturing, software publishing and data processing. Researchers say the changes seem to be driven by the pandemic and rise of remote work. The report found job growth has slowed in some of the biggest tech “superstars” like the Bay Area and Seattle and increased in other midsized and smaller markets, including “smaller quality-of-life meccas and college towns. One of the beneficiaries is Ogden, which had a 7% increase in tech-related jobs between 2019 and 2020, the report found. That’s more than any other region in the state.

L3Harris Is Developing Missile Warning And Missile Defense Capabilities To Address Today’s Rapidly Evolving Threats As quickly as technologies advance worldwide, global threats continue to rapidly increase. Missile capabilities have expanded, with continued and accelerated development of long-range and ballistic missiles. Of increasing concern, however, is the development of a new generation of missile technology. Within this new generation of missile technology exists the potential for hypersonic glide vehicles, which are highly maneuverable and travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5, making them extremely difficult to detect. “Hypersonic glide vehicles do not follow the same deterministic trajectory as preceding ballistic technology,” said John Holder, Missile Warning and Defense (MWD) Chief Systems Engineer, L3Harris. Previous defense architectures, which counted on being able to predict where A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain•

the missile would land based upon initial launch trajectory information, are no longer viable options.“Beyond their high maneuverability, low heat signatures during various phases of flight make the missiles very hard to detect through the atmosphere from space,” Holder continued. Developing an architecture and technology that address these threat capabilities (both current and projected) has been the primary focus of the L3Harris MWD team. L3Harris has an extensive, 60-year history in the design, build and test of both geosynchronous and low earth orbiting weather and climate instruments. Among these are the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) instruments, which are the most sophisticated meteorological imaging instruments ever built for operational weather forecasting.

InCalibration fact, they are the only weather instruments that provide Half Page A2ZMan.indd 1 flexible, custom scanning that is configurable on-orbit. “We observed that these instruments had the sensitivity and performance capability of detecting launches from orbit,” Holder said. “This led to significant company investment to develop accompanying on-orbit algorithms that supported detection and tracking of these missiles through the multiple stages of flight and potential atmospheric conditions.” The MWD system architecture contains many overlapping layers and phases that support different functionality throughout the various stages of missile flight. The system begins with initial detection (launch), extends through tracking, and finally concludes with targeting/engagement (fire control) prior to the missile reaching its intended target during its terminal phase. “L3Harris’ recent focus has been on the detection and tracking phases of the MWD system architecture, identifying key technology required to support these critical functions,” Holder said. Overall, L3Harris has identified four key requirements that are guiding the technology being developed to effectively support these targeted phases of the MWD system: •

Real-time, on-board processing that is capable of immediately detecting and tracking threats under a multitude of different geometries and atmospheric conditions. Open design architecture that supports rapid evolving performance in a schedule-driven, cost-constrained environment.

“Mitigating emerging threats is our number one priority,” Holder said. “We need to respond quickly and ensure that our solution is cost-effective and easily proliferated, while in an open architecture that will allow the design to evolve easily as lessons are learned and threats evolve.” L3Harris continues to dedicate and prioritize investments to address MWD architecture and technology needs. Upon completion of the on-orbit algorithm performance demonstration, further investments were initiated for the development of a proliferated low earth orbit (PLEO) technology centered around the MWD algorithm. In December of 2021, the SDA approved L3Harris’ missile-tracking satellite design at the Tranche 0 Critical Design Review (CDR), affirming L3Harris’ satellite build plans and technology. L3 Harris’ Successful ‘Eye’ Integration, Extreme Testing Enabled James Webb Space Telescope Images L3Harris Technologies engineers integrated a complex system of mirrors on NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, then simulated the harsh conditions of space to rigorously test the functions, ensuring the successful capture of ancient light providing insights into the universe’s origins.

After integrating the complex system of mirrors, a team of L3Harris engineers performed a series of optical tests using a cryogenic vacuum chamber at NASA’s Johnson Space Center to assess the telescope’s ability to operate in harsh space conditions. The recent successful image capture proves the L3Harris integration and testing paid off, paving the way for this scientific progress. “There are no second chances one million miles from Earth,” said Ed Zoiss, president, L3Harris Space and Airborne Systems. “Accurately replicating the environment where the Webb telescope would operate and testing it with increasing fidelity and complexity here on earth was essential to building confidence it would perform flawlessly to support this important scientific mission.” The telescope reached its orbit at the second Lagrange point Jan. 24, one month after launch. L3Harris engineers integrated the mirrors for the Optical Telescope Element (OTE) - the eye of the telescope observatory, as well as installed the Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM) into the OTE structure, resulting in such precise alignment. The OTE will collect light to create sharp images of deep space and light from atmospheres of exoplanets never seen before. The ISIM holds the four science instruments that will gather light delivered by the telescope and produce images and spectra.

USTR Reinstates Hundreds of China 301 Exclusions The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has reinstated over 350 exclusions to the Section 301 tariffs on Chinese goods. Following a review of 549 exclusions which began last October, USTR announced on March 23, 2022, that the administration would reinstate 352 exclusions to apply retroactively from October 21, 2021, through the end of 2022. USTR “may consider further extensions as appropriate,” according to the notice. USTR categorized the review as a “targeted tariff exclusion process” and only considered granted and extended exclusions and not any previously granted exclusions that were never granted an extension, previously denied exclusion requests, or new exclusion requests. This was not a restart of the exclusion process but the finalization of those pending requests from October 8, 2021.

Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 US Competitiveness Unlocks Reshoring Opportunities Resilient supply chains are fundamental to our national security and economic prosperity. The pandemic-induced collapse of global supply chains has launched a national movement to strengthen domestic manufacturing. Longt e r m m anufacturi ng growth depends upon U.S. competitiveness and reshoring. With carefully chosen process improvements, strategies and new technologies, manufacturers can increase capabilities, capacity and innovation, leading to new levels of efficiency and quality control. Building a competitive advantage will unlock more reshoring opportunities. U.S. firms can gain a competitive advantage by investing in advanced manufacturing technologies and processes. Smart manufacturing, also known as Industry 4.0, encompasses coordinated physical and digital processes both in factories and across supply chains to optimize operations. smart factory technologies have seen an increase in production output (10 percent), capacity utilization (11 percent), and labor productivity (12 percent). A survey of C-suite executives revealed that 60 percent say digital transformation will be their most critical growth driver in 2022. These “smart” opportunities can increase competitiveness to enable more reshoring. One such company is defense contractor Lockheed Martin. The company’s electronics assembly plant in Lufkin, TX, has adopted the IPC-CFX standard, a software standard that facilitates machine-to-machine communication, to achieve an ultra-secure, IIoT-based smart factory. “There are so many opportunities for the enhancement of manufacturing through the smart use of data,” says Jarrod Webb, manufacturing robotics engineer at Lockheed. Automation is another weapon for costcompetitiveness. Sorrento Therapeutics, a biopharmaceutical company, knows that. The company is constructing a new U.S. production facility in San Diego. What Comes After the Big Semiconductor Announcements? In his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden called Intel’s $20 billion initial investment in semiconductor manufacturing in central Ohio “the ground on which America’s future will be built.”Construction begins this year on that first phase, and if subsequent phases go forward, eight semiconductor manufacturing facilities total could rise on that 1,000 acre site, with an investment totalling $100 billion.

in improving the U.S. supply chain, in terms high-end, high-performance and similar types of circuits. So maybe the next question is, where are they going to be packaging and testing these products? Because if they have to send that overseas, it really doesn’t help the supply chain as much as it should.

Granahan talked with IndustryWeek about what the Intel plan and other plans like Taiwan-based TSMC’s expansion in Arizona mean for semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. long-term.

As technology becomes more advanced, it’s less about actual labor cost, and more about the technical expertise to actually manufacture and build the products. These factories, once they’re up and running, will be producing chips for 20 plus years, at least. And so, as we move into the latter part of this decade, next, having that assembly and test capability in the U.S. will be a really strong calling card for U.S. supply chain base.

IndustryWeek: Will these announced expansions solve the problem of the semiconductor shortage, or will there still be holes in the supply chain?

What sorts of roles and training are needed for these new semiconductor facilities?

Granahan: [Intel’s expansion plan] takes a pretty major step forward

Granahan: It will be operators, basically

hourly individuals that will definitely need training, but a lot of that training can be on the job. Then there will be technicians, the next level up in terms of education. Most will likely need a twoyear degree or some type of associate’s degree. And then from an engineering perspective, there will be a range of bachelor’s, master’s as well as Ph.D.s that will be in in the facility, working on the device structures working on the process technology, working on advanced process flows and equipment. The good news is this will be an opportunity for people who don’t necessarily have a college degree.

Do you think the CHIPS Act ($52 billion in government f u n d i n g t o g ro w t h e U S semiconductor industry) must pass before these expansions are fully realized? The CEO from Intel said that [passing the CHIPS act] wouldn’t impact his plans, but it might accelerate his plans. I’m hoping the funding can go toward areas that are cashstarved. To draw a contrast, if you look at Intel’s balance sheet, or Nvidia or Qualcomm, or Texas Instruments, or Analog Devices, or any of these large U.S.-based semiconductor companies, they have so much cash on their balance sheets. And that’s why you see companies like Intel moving forward on their own nickel, basically, because they’ve just got a huge stash of cash. I’m hoping that a lot of that $52 billion goes towards more advanced research so that we can stay ahead. The U.S. is actually behind; TSMC has surpassed Intel in terms

Need A Shop That Specializes In Prototypes? That is AS9100 Revision D Certified and Veteran Owned? That Offers Not Just 5 Axis Machining In-House, But Also EDM, Waterjet, and Heat Treat? Mountain View Machine & Welding (MVMW) Does All This And More!

Veteran-Owned. Woman-Owned. AS9100 Revision D Certified. ITAR and Cyber Security Compliant. Supporting Customers with Machining 3,4 and 5 axis), EDM, Certified Welding, Grinding Heat Treat, Waterjet cutting, laser engraving and complete assemblies. And….specializing in Prototype and R&D work. You just can’t find companies like this. Mountain View Machine & Welding, also known as MVMW, is a manufacturing entity tucked away in Logan, a small college town in northern Utah, less than 1.5 hours from Salt Lake City. And though Logan is by all measures a small town, parts made from MVMW are shipped throughout the United States and even internationally. Cliff Abbott, long term employee (20years) for the company, says, “Work at MVMW is always interesting. On any given day we can be repairing a manure spreader, manufacturing a component for the food industry, and making components for the F-15. We are just so diversified, both in the products we make and the manufacturing we do.” Cliff adds that the company doesn’t turn away walk-ins, and it is not unusual to have a farmer come to the shop for help machining a part. The company also manufactures a number of parts that go into mission critical defense and aerospace products. Jason Crook, owner of Mountain View Machine & Welding, Inc, began as a journeyman machinist working in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and Thiokol (now Orbital ATK). He had been a machinist and a shop foreman; yet knew he could better serve his community using his knowledge and experience with his own family-run business. And so, nearly 3 decades ago, MVMW was launched by Jason and his wife Tricia in the family’s garage with two machines. All 9 of Jason and Tricia’s children have been part of the business throughout its history, with son Rob expected to run the company in its long term succession plan. Today, the company resides in its 26,000 square foot facility and is preparing its expansion, with an adjacent 37,500 square foot building nearly complete. Business continues to be good for MVMW, and even during the years prior to and after the pandemic, it sees consistent year over year growth. Cliff says, “Jason recognizes how critical it is for us to continuously invest in technology if we want to remain competitive. We believe in supporting our customers with as much of the machining and processes done in house as possible, so that we can best control the quality and delivery.” Today, MVMW is a single source supplier to some of their largest customers. Jason says, “Our machinists

aren’t just button pushers. Every machinist we employ does their own programming, or if they are newer to the industry, they will be trained to machine and program their own machines.” Cliff says that great machinists really value the fact that Jason invests in some of the best, most sophisticated technology for the business. Jason is not only a gifted machinist, but he is also a natural as a business owner. MVMW is a great place to work, and it retains a family like atmosphere where employees want to come to work. Cliff says that Jason knows how challenging it is to get and retain great team members and treating employees as he would want to be treated helps to install employee loyalty. “Also”, Cliff adds,” Jason does a really good job of selecting customers. Over the years, we have helped to create a base of customers that come from many different industries, though we also have increased the percentage of our business that is Department of Defense (DoD) and aerospace focused.” MVMW’s planned diversification helps them to better manage through economic downturns. Both Jason and Cliff are the closest you come to sales at MVMW, though both admit they aren’t out knocking on doors. Cliff says, “The way we win new customers is almost always referrals that come to us when a current supplier can’t meet the customers’ expectations. We are called on to get the customer out of a bind, and then when we make the parts right, we win a new customer.” For many of their larger customers, MVMW is on the ‘Approved Supplier List’. Jason says that one of their larger customers years ago went through the process of reducing their Approved Supplier List. “They went from 1800 down to 600, and we made the cut for the much smaller list”, he adds.

It is clearly Jason’s philosophy to re-invest profits into the business regularly, and he frequently utilizes the IRS Section 179 deduction to help fund new capital equipment purchases. Most recently, the company purchased two new Mazak machines ,both VTC-800/30SD Vertical Machining Centers. Cliff says the VTC-800/30SD machines feature a high speed 40 Taper spindle, swivel spindle head (B-axis), full traveling-column design and two rotary tables for machining critical parts in the aerospace industry. He says that thanks to the additional axis, MVMW can reduce the total number of machining operations for significant increases in productivity. He adds that the dual synchronized rotary tables create two separate work areas with full 5-axis simultaneous machining. Cliff says the new machines are well suited for the missle launcher project the company is supporting. When you need complex parts, including Aerospace and Defense parts done right, utilizing the best machining technology available, you should contact MVMW. Not only do they accept R&D and prototype projects, but it is also their specialty. Contact them at : (435) 755-0500 or visit mvmwinc.com A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

ELFA President and CEO Ralph Petta said, “MLFI25 participants end the first quarter of the year very favorably: new business volume continues to surge and portfolios are performing extremely well. This, while inflationary pressures, the war in Ukraine and supply chain disruptions continue unabated. With the Fed increasing short-term borrowing rates now and into the foreseeable future, business owners—both large and small—are choosing to lease and finance their critical equipment needs.” Mike Jones, President, CIT Business Capital, a division of First Citizens Bank, said, “Strong performance in the ELFA survey—for both month-over-month and yearover-year results—highlights the continued strength of the economy and the appetite of the business community for equipment financing to drive their growth. These positive results come even as ongoing supply chain issues delay some deliveries. Overall, the results are very encouraging for the balance of 2022, as end-customers show their determination to compete by investing in the latest equipment to power their businesses forward.”

NASA Moon Lander On Schedule For ULA Vulcan Rocket Debut The robotic lunar lander that Centennial-based United Launch Alliance will fly to the moon in the debut mission of its new rocket is nearly ready for its scheduled liftoff late this year. Astrobotic, the Pittsburgh company building the lander, held an unveiling at which it announced the project should be ready in Cape Canaveral, Florida for the fourth-quarter blastoff. The U.S. Space Force has contracted ULA to fly 60% of national security space launches over the next five years on Vulcan. The first certification flight will be Astrobotic’s Peregrine lander and the second, scheduled to follow soon after in early 2023, is expected to be the maiden flight of the Dream Chaser space plane built by Louisville-based Sierra Space. To keep Vulcan on schedule, ULA has gone far enough to design and build a mass simulator — a dummy payload — it could fly on a Vulcan as one of its two certification missions, Tory Bruno, CEO of ULA, said during an industry conference in Colorado Springs earlier this month. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

24 May / June 2022

That could help keep Vulcan on schedule for military missions, but ULA wants to avoid flying a dummy payload. Each flight of a Vulcan rocket is expected to cost about $100 million. Astrobotic, as a 160-employee company, has never launched a lander before, and it has experienced some schedule delays of its own. Whether its Peregrine lander would be ready in time to make ULA’s late-2022 launch timeline hasn’t been publicly known. ULA would only say it had confidence in Astrobotic and ULA would have its rocket ready when the lander needs it. Astrobotic’s unveiling made it look likely the lander will make its expected launch date. The Peregrine lander will go to environmental testing in a couple months’ time and then, if everything checks out, head to the launch pad to be integrated with the rocket later this year, Thornton said. ULA expects by mid-summer to have received fullyqualified flight versions of the two BE-4 rocket engines that will power each Vulcan rocket and will then install them on the Vulcan built for Astrobotic’s mission. ULA has been waiting on the engine delivery from Kent, Washington-based Blue Origin since last year. The BE-4 engines are about a year later than the latest Bruno had been aiming for, he said, but the added months of testing on non-flight versions of the engines suggest the BE-4 will perform even better than Bruno hoped when ULA selected it for Vulcan. NASA picked the Carnegie Mellon University spinoff’s moon lander for a $79.5 million award that same year. The lander is designed to carry several payloads, some NASA’s and some for commercial customers, to the lunar surface as part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Service. It’s the first of seven scheduled CLPS program missions

to the moon. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson spoke enthusiastically about the project, saying Astrobotic’s Peregrine lander is setting the stage for a series of NASA missions around the moon that will culminate with the landing of the first woman on the moon in mid-2025 under the Artemis program.

A CONTROL FOR EVERY GENERATION.

“We are going back to the moon first with a commercial lander,” he said. The Peregrine lander’s payloads include instruments they will try out on the moon and use to refine the design of instruments NASA plans to send to the moon’s south pole region in 2023 and scout for water ice. opportunities here and workforce talent. Moog Inc., an East Aurora, New York-based manufacturer of space hardware with contracts to build small satellites for classified federal programs, this month opened a 29,000-squarefoot manufacturing space in Arvada. The 13,000-employee business has a presence in 26 countries but chose to expand here because it’s where the growth made sense, said Hallie Freeman, site director and head of Moog’s space vehicles unit. “The Denver aerospace market is so strong,” she said. “We are able to find incredible talent.” The facility almost quadruples Moog’s space in the metro area, adding to its Golden location and giving the 60-employee operation room for its planned hiring of 20 more people. Beyond Gravity, a Zurich, Switzerland-based defense and space manufacturer formerly called RUAG, was known in the U.S. for making rocket fairings that protect satellites and being a key supplier to Centennial-based United Launch Alliance. In the past four years, the 1,300-employee company established a Denver-area office and added a dozen employees, including its global vice president of innovation and its global business development head work. It’s trying to hire 60 more people between its Denver and Alabama sites. The opportunities connected to big companies like Lockheed Martin Space, Northrop Grumman, Ball Aerospace, Sierra Space and ULA are growing and drew Beyond Gravity to Denver, said Mike Allen, the company’s vice president of innovation.

Colorado’s space industry ranks as the second-largest space economy among U.S. states.

“We want to support those customers and their projects,” he said.

It’s not just the marquee aerospace contractors and commercial space giants that are dramatically expanding in Colorado.

It’s expanding because of those opportunities and the possibility of working with smaller companies in the area doing innovative things, he said.

The industry’s growth is prompting companies that have typically been suppliers in space to build a bigger presence in the Denver metro area too, citing the growing business

But it’s the space industry’s growth in the past five years that is without precedent, with industry employment expanding 30% and its annual payroll topping $5.2 billion Space Colorado says. The effort to recruit space companies to Colorado has more often become helping companies after they’ve decided Colorado is the place they want to grow, said Vicky Lea, director of aerospace and aviation for the Metro Denver Economic Development Corp. Freeman, of Moog, and Allen, from Beyond Gravity, both have worked in the industry for years in Colorado. The state is on the leading edge of an industrywide transformation, they say. “We’ve seen more change and growth in the past five years than I’ve seen in the rest of

my time in the industry,” Freeman said. Allen attributes it mainly to the emergence of highly-capable small satellites which, coupled with much cheaper rocket launch costs, makes companies able to create a viable business case for new capabilities in orbit that once wouldn’t have made sense. It’s transforming the industry and slashing the amount of time it takes for innovations to emerge and reach orbit, he said. By Greg Avery – Denver Business Journal

Teledyne, Sierra Space and Nissan Designing Lunar Terrain Vehicle for NASA Te l e d y n e B r o w n Engineering announced that it is l e a d i n g a team including partners Sierra Space and Nissan North America, to design the crewed Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) that will support future exploration on the moon. With almost seven decades of space hardware design and development experience, Teledyne Brown Engineering will lead the effort providing program management, engineering, manufacturing, integration, operations, and the power system. The company recently designed, built, and delivered the first of 3 Launch Vehicle Stage Adapters, an almost 30 foot wide, and 30-foot-tall section of NASA’s Artemis Vehicle, scheduled for initial launch early this summer. In addition, Teledyne Brown Engineering’s continuous efforts to propel technology in space resulted in the design, development, and operation of the MUSES platform, one of the first commercial initiatives using the International Space Station. As the Prime Contractor, Teledyne has performed Payload Operations Integration work for NASA for 20 years for Space Shuttle missions and currently for International Space Station payloads. US Air Force and Boom Supersonic Enter into Strategic Partnership

Overture will carry 65–88 passengers at twice the speed of today’s airliners. Designed to run on 100% sustainable aviation fuels, Overture is expected to be the first large commercial aircraft to be net zero carbon from day one. The supersonic airliner is set to enter manufacturing in 2023, roll out in 2025, and begin flying passengers by the end of the decade. The new Air Force contract represents a further widening of government efforts to ensure that the U.S. remains at the forefront of supersonic commercial development. Additionally, a derivative of Overture could offer the Air Force a future strategic capability in rapid global transport and logistics. Potential users and applications include executive transport; Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance; Special Operations Forces; and the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF).

April 2022 Business Conditions Report: Metalformers Report Steady Business Despite Supply-Chain Challenges Metalforming companies forecast little change in business conditions during the next three months, according to the April 2022 Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) Business Conditions Report. Prepared monthly, the report provides an economic indicator for manufacturing, sampling 108 metalforming companies in the United States and Canada. PMA’s April report shows that 63% of metalforming companies anticipate no change in general economic activity in the next three months (increasing from 58% in March), 19% expect an increase in activity (compared to 24% last month) and 18% predict a decrease in activity (the same percentage reported in March).

Boom Supersonic, the aerospace company building the world’s fastest and most sustainable supersonic airliner, announced it has entered into a three year strategic partnership with the U.S. Air Force valued at up to $60 million. The Air Force awarded this contract to Boom through its innovation arm, AFWERX, and its AFVentures division, which is designed to accelerate commercial technologies. Known as the Strategic Funding Increase (STRATFI), the STRATFI contract awarded to Boom is one of the program’s largest investments and a significant commitment to the future of supersonic aviation. The STRATFI contract will accelerate research and development on Overture, Boom’s commercial airliner. A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •
