The American dream was held in high regard and viewed as “the ideal that every citizen of the United States should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative.” This was a beacon to immigrants, and this bright light was warm to the immigrant’s souls, it gave them hope, and put a fervent desire of fire in most all of their hearts. Is the American Dream alive and well today? In fact, research suggests that an amazing 1.4 million startups were founded between June and September 2020. That’s the biggest number than any other quarter in history! So, with figures like this, it’s easy to say that the American dream is very much still alive and well. It certainly seems like this is the place to be if you want to set up a new business. Part of the reason for this is that the USA has very friendly business tax rates, making it as easy as possible for people to start businesses.

Aem Launches “Faces Of Manufacturing” To Rally The Men And Women Of The Industry Around Pro-Manufacturing Policies Urges Congress to Immediately Pass the Bipartisan Innovation Act The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) today unveiled “Faces of Manufacturing,” a new initiative designed to rally the 2.8 million men and women of the equipment manufacturing industry in support of pro-manufacturing policies.The centerpiece is a 90-second video featuring 22 equipment manufacturing workers urging their peers to speak with one united voice and tell elected officials to “create jobs, grow the economy, and keep the industry strong.” AEM will deploy the video, along with supportive digital and print materials, to equipment manufacturing facilities across the country to make sure that supporters make their voices heard and advance policies that help strengthen manufacturing in America and the communities it supports. ASSP Foundation Awards $251,000 In Scholarships And Grants The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) Foundation is awarding $251,000 in academic scholarships and career development grants to 133 individuals to help them achieve their educational and career goals in the occupational safety and health profession. “For over 30 years, our Foundation has helped thousands of students and professionals continue their education in workplace safety and health,” said ASSP Foundation Chair Trish Ennis, CSP, ARM, CRIS. “The consistent support from donors shows that safety and health careers are vital in helping to protect workers everywhere.” The 2022 awards include more than $225,000 in academic scholarships for 100 graduate and undergraduate students preparing for or supplementing their occupational safety and health careers at 48 colleges and universities. The ASSP Foundation is awarding more than $25,000 in career development grants to 33 safety students and professionals who are working to advance their careers through certification, conference attendance and similar learning opportunities. Career development grants will continue to be awarded throughout the year. “Presenting career development grants year-round is new for us, and we’re excited about that enhancement because it increases access to funding and training for individuals throughout the safety field,” Ennis said. Several corporate donors support the awards, including the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, Canadian National Railway Corporation, Draeger, FabEnCo, Google, Lancaster County Industrial Safety Council, Liberty Mutual Insurance, L’Oréal, Texas Safety Foundation and UPS. Big as the project is — with a companion 59-mile segment and related infrastructure, the price tag is around $2.2 billion — it’s just one of dozens around the country that experts say is needed to decarbonize and grow electricity generation in the face of climate change. Among the others that Portland-based PacifiCorp is eyeing: the 300-mile Boardman-to-Hemingway line, a project with Idaho Power that would run mostly through northeast Oregon. That project is in the late stages of regulatory approval, but for PacifiCorp’s Energy Gateway South line, it’s all systems go after the U.S. Bureau of Land Management on Thursday issued a notice to proceed. The line will run from southeastern Wyoming, where PacifiCorp is expanding wind power, through a portion of Colorado to central Utah, where solar power is growing.

The Biden administration called the approval a “significant milestone” in its effort to expand and upgrade the grid and enable a transition from fossil fuels to clean energy sources. Berkshire Hathawayo w n e d PacifiCor p operates in six states, with about a quarter of its electricity sales coming in Oregon, where the company operates as Pacific Power. Even before Oregon adopted a

2040 100% decarbonization mandate last year, PacifiCorp said new transmission was a vital component to a plan to add thousands of megawatts of new solar and wind power to its system. That means the company will almost certainly ask regulators to put some of the costs in Oregon rates when the assets go into service, expected in late 2024. Just this week, the Oregon Public Utility Commission issued an order that acknowledges the Energy Gateway projects as reasonable action items in PacifiCorp’s resource planning, based on what is now known, even as it nodded to staff concerns that the company’s justification was initially fuzzy. With more big-ticket projects on the way, the PUC pushed PacifiCorp to do better. “In order to connect new resources to the grid, it is critical not only that transmission be built, but that the right transmission be built; the commission and stakeholders need to have sufficient information to verify that ratepayers are getting the benefits they are paying for at each stage of development,” the commission said. “Going forward, we expect PacifiCorp to provide information that allows that assessment at the outset.”

Oregon has emerged as a leading manufacturing state during the past half century—with production and employment growth routinely outpacing the U.S. average. Oregon’s share of the nation’s manufacturing gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 50 percent in the last 50 years, growing from about 1.0 to 1.5 percent of the U.S. total. Notably, Oregon’s manufacturing employment increased 14 percent from 1969-2019—U.S. manufacturing jobs declined by 34 percent during the same period. Oregon has 214,000 manufacturing jobs and the sector contributed $33 billion to the state’s GDP in 2020. The sector represents 8 percent and 13 percent of the state’s employment and GDP, respectively. A high share of state GDP relative to its share of the workforce reflects the sector’s high level of productivity. The sector got off to a strong start in 2021 Q1, when quarterly production hit an all-time high—an annualized equivalent of $35.7 billion—and exceeded production in the recession’s trough (2020 2nd quarter) by 18 percent. (Photo: GE Aviation) GE Aviation recently completed successful first testing of its Passport long-range business aviation engine using 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Ground testing was conducted with one engine over the course of two weeks in March at GE Aviation’s Peebles Test Operations in southern Ohio. The type of SAF used in the testing, HEFA-SPK (hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids synthetic paraffinic kerosene), is the most widely available SAF today and can be made from cooking oil and other waste fats, oils, and greases. Preliminary test results showed the engine performed similarly to A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

running on petroleum-based jet-A. Currently, the SAF approved for use is a blend of petroleum-based jet A or jet A-1 fuel and an SAF component with a maximum blend limit of 50 percent. ASTM International, an organization that develops technical standards, has not yet qualified 100 percent SAF. GE Aviation (Booth S93) is working with an international task force to standardize industry specifications supporting the adoption of 100 percent drop-in SAF. “As our testing shows, the Passport engine, like all GE engines, can operate on approved sustainable aviation fuel today and in the future. Our customers can be confident that the Passport-powered [Bombardier] Global 7500 can help meet their sustainability goals to reduce CO2 emissions in flight, thanks to the Passport’s more fuel-efficient technologies compared to previous-generation business jets and ability to operate on lower-carbon fuels,” said Melvyn Heard, GE general manager, Passport engine program. Heard said the Passport’s performance on 100 percent SAF was “no surprise for us” and was done more to demonstrate that capability to customers. “We don’t see any limitations on the engine,” burning 100 percent SAF, he said. GE Aviation has been actively involved in assessing and qualifying SAF since 2007. SAF can be made from a variety of substances, but, compared to fossil fuels, using alternative feedstocks and processes for SAF reduces lifecycle CO2 emissions during production, processing, and distribution. This is the latest in a series of 100 percent SAF tests by GE and CFM International, a 50-50 joint company between GE and Safran Aircraft

Engines. Other tests with 100 percent SAF in 2021 included flying 100 percent SAF in one of two Leap-1B engines on a Boeing 737 Max 8 operated by United Airlines; ground tests and flying an Airbus A319neo with 100 percent SAF in one Leap-1A engine; and flying the Boeing ecoDemonstrator with 100 percent SAF. A FedEx Boeing 777F with GE90 engines flew with 100 percent SAF in 2018 as part of Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator program.

GE’s Passport engine, which entered service in 2018, has 3 percent lower fuel consumption, compared with other engines operating in the 18,000-pound thrust class and 17 percent lower fuel consumption compared with the GE CF34-3 engine. It features blisk fan blades, high-efficiency compressor, rich-burn combustor, proprietary turbine system, and high efficiency mixer. Heard said the engine has 2-3 percent better specific fuel consumption than comparable new engines that will come to market in the next few years and that it has room for growth in terms of future increases in performance. “The engine is ready to grow,” he said. “We still do have capability that we have not completely unleashed in the engine yet.”

To date, the installed engine fleet on Bombardier Global 7500s has achieved more than 80,000 flight hours and 30,000 cycles with better than a 99 percent dispatch reliability rate. That number is expected to grow to 100,000 flight hours by year’s end with the lifting of more and more Covid restrictions. “We’re finally seeing people utilize the legs of this [Global 7500] as it was designed to do,” Heard said, noting that one operator flew non-stop from Sydney to Detroit in 2019, a distance of 8,255 nm, and that such trips are again becoming more commonplace.

Dispatch reliability is enhanced via the substantial enrollment of Global 7500 customers in GE’s OnPoint engine services program and the Passport’s Diagnostics Monitoring health and usage system that can transmit data in real-time to GE’s monitoring centers in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Shanghai and allows operators to download data once the aircraft returns to base. Heard notes that GE has a combined 30,000 engines under diagnostics and that it “gives us the breadth of

creating those [maintenance monitoring] tools. The Passport was recently selected to test hydrogen combustion. In February 2022, CFM joined Airbus to announce a new hydrogen demonstration program with ground and flight tests to take place later this decade. CFM will modify the combustor, fuel system, and controls of the engine to run on hydrogen. Flight tests will be conducted aboard an Airbus A380 testbed equipped with an additional pylon for the Passport engine. Heard believes a combination of advanced engine design, such as in the Passport, and alternative fuels such as SAF and hydrogen will be needed to achieve GE’s and CFM’s overall goal of improving efficiency by 20 percent. “The [Passport] engine has been the core of all [our] new development programs” in cooperation with CFM including open fan, compact core, and hydrogen propulsion, Heard said. Economic activity in the manufacturing sector grew in May, with the overall economy achieving a 24th consecutive month of growth, say the nation’s supply executives in the latest Manufacturing ISM® Report On Business®. The report was issued today by Timothy R. Fiore, CPSM, C.P.M., Chair of the Institute for Supply Management® (ISM®) Manufacturing Business Survey Committee: “The May Manufacturing PMI® registered 56.1 percent, an increase of 0.7 percentage point from the reading of 55.4 percent in April. This figure indicates expansion in the overall economy for the 24th month in a row after a contraction in April and May 2020. This is the secondlowest Manufacturing PMI® reading since September 2020, when it registered 55.4 percent. The New Orders Index reading of 55.1 percent is 1.6 percentage points higher than the 53.5 percent recorded in April. The Production Index reading of 54.2 percent is a 0.6-percentage point increase compared to April’s figure of 53.6 percent. The Prices Index registered 82.2 percent, down 2.4 percentage points compared to the April figure of 84.6 percent.The Backlog of Orders Index registered 58.7 percent, 2.7 percentage points higher than the April reading of 56 percent. The Employment Index went into contraction territory at 49.6 percent, 1.3 percentage points lower than the 50.9 percent recorded in April. The Supplier Deliveries Index reading of 65.7 percent is 1.5 percentage points lower than the April figure of 67.2 percent.The Inventories Index registered A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

The New Export Orders Index reading of 52.9 percent is up 0.2 percentage point compared to April’s figure of 52.7 percent. The Imports Index fell into contraction territory, decreasing 2.7 percentage points to 48.7 percent from 51.4 percent in April.” Fiore continues, “The U.S. manufacturing sector remains in a demanddriven, supply chain-constrained environment. Despite the Employment Index contracting in May, companies improved their progress on addressing moderate-term labor shortages at all tiers of the supply chain, according to Business Survey Committee respondents’ comments. Panelists reported slightly lower rates of quits compared to April. May was a second straight month of slight easing of prices expansion, but instability in global energy markets continues. Surcharge increase activity appears to be stabilizing across all industry sectors. Sentiment remained strongly optimistic regarding demand, with five positive growth comments for every cautious comment. Panelists continue to note supply chain and pricing issues as their biggest concerns. Demand expanded, with the (1) New Orders Index improving, supported by stronger growth of new export orders, (2) Customers’ Inventories Index remaining at a very low level and (3) Backlog of Orders Index increasing. Consumption (measured by the Production and Employment indexes) was mixed during the period, with a combined minus-0.7-percentage point change to the Manufacturing PMI® calculation. The Employment Index contracted after expanding for eight straight months, but panelists indicated improvement in ability to hire in May compared to April. to plague efforts to adequately staff organizations, but to a slightly lesser extent compared to April. Ten percent of panelists’ general comments expressed difficulty obtaining material from their Asian partners, which will impact reliable deliveries in the summer months,” says Fiore. Portland General Electric Eyes Giant Energy Storage Project By Pete Danko – Staff Reporter, Portland Business Journal A pumped-storage hydropower project is on the final shortlist in a Portland General Electric (NYSE: POR) resource solicitation, boosting its chances of becoming the largest energy storage facility in the Pacific Northwest. Not all the shortlisted projects will land contracts, but the selection could be a breakthrough for a technology that developers and advocates say is needed to enable a flexible grid that runs on renewable energy. Pumped storage works by moving water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir when energy is plentiful, then releasing it down through electricity-generating turbines in a closed-loop system when demand rises. The identity of the shortlisted project remains confidential, but Portland Business Journal reporting strongly points to Swan Lake Energy Storage in Klamath County. to developer Rye Development, could generate around 400 megawatts of power for at least eight hours. It would dwarf the largest existing energy storage system in Oregon, a new PGE facility that uses lithiumion batteries that can generate 30 megawatts for four hours. Rye has been marketing Swan Lake to potential energy off-takers for several years, and utilities have begun to put generic projects in their long-term integrated resource plans. Still, the technology, although well established, hasn’t been deployed in the U.S. in recent decades. Many pumped storage projects wither in the face of environmental hurdles, and there are economic challenges. Capital costs are high, and markets aren’t set up to value the capacity and ancillary services projects can provide. Long construction timelines also make projects difficult to fit into utility solicitations. That’s led utilities to turn to batteries, which are much easier to deploy but have limitations. Michael Rooney, Rye’s vice president of project management, confirmed Swan Lake’s bid into the PGE request for proposals, but declined to comment on whether the project was or wasn’t selected. PGE said it could not reveal the names of projects on the shortlist.

PGE aims to address capacity shortfall The PGE solicitation was intended to address a generating capacity shortfall beginning in 2025 with a combination of renewable resources and non-emitting resources that can deliver energy when needed, called dispatchable capacity.

While he was mum on Swan Lake’s status in the RFP, Rooney said the shortlisting of a pumped storage project by a major utility was a positive sign.

On the renewables side, the shortlist includes both standalone solar and wind projects, solar and wind colocated with battery systems, and projects that bring together all three. The dispatchable resources include several standalone battery facilities ranging from 50 to 200 megawatts, along with the pumped storage bid.

“We believe that this shortlist confirms many of the messages that our project has been communicating through years of IRP and RFP work,” Rooney said. “Specifically, the Swan Lake project can be the cornerstone of Oregon and the broader Pacific Northwest’s 100% clean energy economy by unlocking a long-duration, clean energy solution to the region’s abundant wind and solar.”

That bid is for 197 megawatts of power, half Swan Lake’s output, which is technically 393 megawatts. Rye sounded confident it could find more customers.

Rye continues to lead development of Swan Lake after the company and then-partner National Grid sold the project to Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners in November 2020. Copenhagen also acquired an even larger Rye-National Grid pumped storage project, just off the Columbia River near Goldendale,Washington.That project is still in the permitting phase.

“Given the size of the Swan Lake project, the development team is prepared for multiple approaches to offtake including participation in RFPs up and down the West Coast,” Rooney said. “This approach gives the project an incredibly flexible path to the offtake required to construct the facility, ultimately helping to meet the capacity needs of utilities and customers in the region. By Shawna De La Rosa – Reporter, Puget Sound Business Journal A recession may eventually arrive, say economists, but for now Washington’s economy is white hot, according to a WalletHub report released Monday. The personal finance website ranked the Evergreen State’s economy the best in the country based on three criteria: economic activity, economic health, and innovation potential. Utah, California, Massachusetts and New Hampshire rounded out the top five. Among Pacific Northwest states, Oregon was No. 9 and Idaho was No. 13. The worst-performing state was West Virginia. Washington topped the charts in several categories that contributed to its ranking, said Julie Gonzelez, a WalletHub analyst, in a message to the Business Journal. “The almost 6% increase in the number of nonfarm payrolls and the over 4% rise in the labor force are other indicators of economic health,” Gonzelez said. “Washington’s economic well-being is also demonstrated by the high median annual household income, low foreclosure rate, as well as the educational attainment of recent immigrants.” The state also has the most independent inventor patents per capita and the highest amount of research and development investments per capita, Gonzelez said. The number of inventor patents per 1,000 working-age residents also contributed to Washington’s high score for innovation potential. “Over 8% of the state’s jobs are in high-tech industries and more than 10% of jobs are STEM,” she said, referring to science, technology, math and engineering fields. King County recently reached an all-time low unemployment rate of 1.9%, according to state data. Experts attribute the low unemployment to the rapid economic recovery from the pandemic. Job gains are being seen across the workforce spectrum. According to data from IT trade association CompTIA, Seattle had 44,618 tech job postings January through April, up 40% year over year. One local commercial real estate expert isn’t losing any sleep over a potential economic slowdown. “Our region is so resilient because our jobs market is so strong,” said Brandon Lawler, broker with Kidder Mathews who specializes in

multifamily transactions. “Even if a recession hits, we have already have the drivers and the job market in place to get through it smoothly.”

King County, State Unemployment Rates Fall To Record Lows The unemployment rate hit a record low in King County, according to the state Employment Security Department. The news comes as many employers look to ramp up hiring. By Joey Thompson – Reporter, Puget Sound Business Journal The crunch for workers is reaching historic levels. In April, King County’s non-adjusted unemployment rate hit 1.9% — the lowest ever recorded for the county, according to the state Employment Security Department. In Snohomish County, the April unemployment mark dropped to 2.3%, another all-time low. At the state level, it’s the same story, as Washington’s unemployment rate dropped to 3.5%. “This is historic,” Anneliese VanceSherman, a regional labor economist for the department, told the Business Journal. “If we were just to have this in isolation, it’d be a head scratcher, but there’s context to this. We’ve seen this building up.” The record low figures, she added, come amid an economic rebound from the Covid-19 pandemic that has outpaced typical recessions, from which recoveries are usually gradual. In tune, employers across virtually every industry — from hospitality to health care to education — are working to ramp up operations. But with a limited applicant pool, competition for labor remains high, and many businesses are struggling to meet the renewed demand. “Basically, they’re facing the challenges of a weak economy and the challenges of a strong economy,” Vance-Sherman said. “It’s the worst of both worlds.” It’s unclear how long the shortage will last, Vance-Sherman said. The

pandemic created a gap between the size of the workforce and the overall population, which typically rise in tandem. When the workforce dipped amid the pandemic, the population continued to climb. Additionally, demand for both child and elder care is keeping some people from reentering the labor market. That gap will likely affect the workforce population for years,VanceSherman said. Statewide, the unemployment rate is expected to bottom out in 2023, with a year-round average of just under 4%, before trickling up to 5% in 2026, according to estimates from the state Economic and Revenue Forecast Council. “At this point, we are tired, but we’re used to resilience and we’re used to innovating,” Vance-Sherman said. “It could mean a jobless recovery — businesses that find it difficult to hire might find justification for increasing investments in technology, or lead to restructuring.” A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

A Friendship Stronger Than Steel… and a legacy to be proud of Lin Pryor (pictured on the right side of this page) and Oscar Moreno (pictured below) worked together at Ryerson Steel and Metal West in the late 80’s and through the 90’s. They both cut their teeth in the steel business, and they worked side by side to build a reputation for delivering results for their customers. Lin loves to tell the story about how Oscar was given the toughest sales territory in the market; a territory that no one else wanted. Oscar accepted the challenge and through hard work and dedication, turned it into a territory that generated over a million dollars per month in revenues. Oscar’s philosophy was to service the heck out of every account, not just the big ones. More importantly, he understood the value of relationships and people doing business with people. Big O Metals was founded on this philosophy and still embraces it today. L i n ’s a n d O s c a r ’ s friendship went beyond work; their families were very close, and they spent a lot of time together. You could say that two families essentially became one. Among all the things they had in common, Lin and Oscar shared a love of sports. Oscar was a fitness buff and he worked out on a regular basis. At one time, he held a record for bench pressing 410 pounds. He also loved playing organized sports, but his passion was playing hockey. His competitive nature and muscular build made him a formidable guy on the ice. One night, after finishing a match, he hit the showers where he died tragically 38

of a heart attack due to an undiagnosed heart condition. At 36 years old, Oscar was gone, leaving behind a wife and two young daughters. In the wake of his death, a common friend of both Lin and Oscar named Kent Grahl stepped in to make sure Oscar’s family was taken care of, even making sure that Oscar’s daughters would receive a college education at no cost to them or their family. Kent and Oscar had been friends since grade school, and it was Oscar who had first introduced Lin to Kent. The importance of this introduction wouldn’t be fully known for many years to come. Oscar and Lin had always talked about starting their own steel service center one day. A few years after Oscar had passed, Lin decided to make their dream a reality by starting his own company. To honor his friend, Lin named the company Big O Metals for Big Oscar. Ta k i n g o u t a home equity loan and with an additional financial investment from Kent Grahl, on January 23, 2006, Big O Metals was born. Needing a logo that matched the name, Lin’s son, Aaron Pryor, took it upon himself to draw one. The company’s original logo depicted an “O” with two muscular arms in honor of the company’s namesake. In the early years, Lin sold steel, sheared steel, packaged steel, drove a truck to deliver steel; if it had anything to do with steel, Lin did it. As the company gained momentum,

Big O Metals added a 72” wide x ¼” Corrective Leveling Line to its operation. This piece of machinery has been a game changer for both the company and its customers. Having the ability to store material in coil form to be cut in house to standard or custom lengths, in a short period of time, is a huge benefit to many of Big O’s customers. It isn’t unheard of for BOM to put up a coil, level it into sheets, and deliver those sheets the same day if a customer is in desperate need of the material.

A FRIENDSHIP STRONGER THAN STEEL

Lin hired Christi McCuiston, who was with Metal West at the time, to take over all the planning, forecasting, and purchasing of steel. Christi jokes that in her first months, she was only allowed to buy 40 tons per month. Lin also hired Shawna Noyes, from Reliance Steel, to hit the streets as the company’s first outside salesperson. The early efforts of both Shawna and Christi have had a lasting impact on Big O Metals, and they are both still with the company today. As the company continued to grow, Lin saw both a need and an opportunity to diversify into value-added fabrication services. Starting with a shear and then a press brake, Big O Metals began to take on more and more fabrication work. Soon it added a dual head plasma machine, then additional press brakes, shears, saws, and a turret. In 2016, BOM took a large leap forward by adding a 4kw laser. Again in 2018, the company stepped up its game by adding a 500ton press brake with sheet followers, Wila precision clamping, auto crowning, and a 6-axis backgauge. In May of this year, the company took another huge leap forward by adding a state-of-the-art 20kw laser with a material automation system. This asset is part of Big O Metal’s ongoing commitment to intentionally design its operations to better serve and support the needs of its customers. In combination with its fabrication capabilities, in 2014,

David Watkins, General Manager of Big O Metals, is one of the primary architects of its current business model. Bringing over 30 years of production and manufacturing experience to the company, he has been able to expand on Lin’s vision of pairing value-added services with BOM’s existing steel service center capabilities. Robots don’t give a damn about your feelings, and that bothers people working with and around them. “We have been making algorithms that make robots greedy and jerky,” said Melonee Wise, vice president of robotics automation at Zebra Technologies. And by jerky, she’s not talking about sudden, jarring movements. She’s talking about machines acting like overly groomed kids in ’80s movies with their collars flipped up. “They see everything as a goal or an obstacle.” Speaking at a panel discussion at the Automate trade show in Detroit Wednesday, Wise explained that robots have broken free from their cages—first with collaborative robots (cobots) that could safely work alongside people and more recently with the explosion of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) that roam factory floors performing various tasks. That robotic evolution was evident on the show floor. A decade ago, Automate was dominated by fixed, 6-axis robots, conveyor systems and other pieces of hard-infrastructure automation. Immediately preCOVID, cobots were the hot items with startups and established leaders showing off such models. The problem, as Wise put it, is that the robots are doing exactly what they were programmed to do. That was fine when they were caged up and didn’t interact with people. Now that they’re roaming free, people need to feel comfortable around them, so the robots need some lessons in etiquette. For more than a year, Wise’s team has been rewriting algorithms to focus on social cues. Some things are minor—Americans tend to walk on the right side of sidewalks and paths, and pass slower-moving people on their left sides. Robots were flipping a coin every time they chose where to drive and on which side to pass. The result—people didn’t like working near them because they felt rude or off. Other behavior cues are more complicated, such as knowing that it’s okay for the robot to keep moving toward a person in the robot’s path, as long as that person is moving in a predictable way. Ignoring social prompts isn’t just a matter of making robots feel less creepy. It’s a productivity issue. Most times, when a mobile robot

encounters an obstacle, it slows down or stops to avoid collisions, then it thinks about what it should do next and picks a new path to its destination. In one video, Wise showed that a person simply crossing in front of a robot’s path caused it to pause for half a minute then take a circuitous route to avoid where the person had been—a person who by then was nowhere near the robot. So, each of those interactions slows down the machines. “Getting rid of these weird navigation artifacts is key to the speed of the robot,” Wise explained, adding that in one test, making robots a little more aware of human behavior increase average movement speed by 51%. Liam Mongovan, a sales manager with Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR), said workers should expect to see more AMRs in the coming months as many companies are turning to such systems to relieve staffing shortages. Mobile robots can typically be deployed quickly, making them an attractive short-term solution. “It’s a quick solution to the three Ds—dirty, dull or dangerous,” Mongovan said.With companies having so much trouble finding people, many are choosing AMRs where they once used forklift drivers or people sorting boxes for delivery. “We’re talking about hours per day. How many hours of labor can you move from people to robots? That becomes how many people you can redeploy in your factory to do more valuable work,” he added.

People with several robotics companies said the large numbers of AMRs didn’t surprise them at this year’s show, much in the same way that the large numbers of cobots weren’t a surprise at IMTS 2018 or Automate 2019. Even before the pandemic, companies were seeing success stories from manufacturers using AMRs to automate the shipping of tools or supplies to workers on assembly lines, route pallets of good to shipping docks and perform simple production tasks such as drilling holes in work pieces. Wise said the industry’s direction is clear—more companies will offer more mobile options, putting more workers in the paths of moving robots. As that happens, the current algorithms and safety protocols will hamper productivity, hence her group’s focus on human-robot interactions. On the plus side, her research projects have been boosting robotic performance without radically redesigning hardware. On the downside, teaching a robot decent shop-floor manners is really hard. “It’s taken a year of research with engineers to navigation algorithm experts to show these improvements,” Wise said. “So, it’s not simple or easy, but it doesn’t involve redesigning everything else or adding expensive new components.” A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •

While the sprawling multimodal facility in Hannibal, Ohio—which sits on the Ohio and West Virginia border—achieved commercial operation in October 2021, efforts to kick off its GE 7HA.02 gas turbine’s transition to hydrogen combustion began in earnest earlier this year. A test to combust an initial blending of 5% hydrogen and 95% natural gas fuel successfully completed on March 30 demonstrated that capability, said the plant’s owners, Fortress Transportation and Infrastructure Investors, and Grosvenor Capital Management—Labor Impact Fund. The test is part of a project spearheaded by Long Ridge Energy Generation, Black &Veatch, GE, NAES, and Long Ridge’s engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor Kiewit to integrate hydrogen fuel blending at the plant without disrupting its power production for PJM Interconnection. The project’s key aim was to create an operational regime for hydrogen blending of 5% maximum hydrogen by volume in preparation for the next phase, which could involve blending of 20% hydrogen. GE implemented the project’s scope of supply, including its hardware design and procurement, as well as the GE Mark VIe and distributed control system modifications. The blended fuel’s injection into the gas turbine’s combustion system marks a substantial triumph for gas power technology, Jeff Goldmeer, director of Emergent Technologies at GE Gas Power’s Decarbonization division, told POWER. “It’s definitely GE’s first HA machine to start using hydrogen, and it may be the first H-class machine anywhere in the world to start using hydrogen,” he said. A Demonstration with Deep Implications Hydrogen integration in a gas power plant is a complex undertaking that requires careful assessment of the gas’s safety challenges, Goldmeer noted. While GE has successfully tested hydrogen blends on other classes, HAclass machines—which are much bigger—have larger fuel requirements, Goldmeer explained. “So it’s great that we can actually start to learn real lessons from the real world about how to use hydrogen, especially as we start talking about this on an HA [machine],” he said. The 7HA.02 combustion turbine—a model GE debuted in 2017—is already “innately capable” of burning 15% to 20% hydrogen by volume given its DLN 2.6+ combustion system, he noted. Crucial to this effort, however, are aligning the differences in the combustion properties of hydrogen and natural gas, as well as impacts to all gas turbine systems, and to the overall balance of plant. “The 7HA.02 at Long Ridge has not been modified for hydrogen,” Goldmeer said. “When we talk about going to 50% or 100% hydrogen, then we’ll start needing to see changes in the combustion system, primarily on the gas turbine, and changes in the balance of plant to handle much more hydrogen.”

The pilot “will test varying concentrations of green hydrogen in its fuel mix to determine how the system responds and learn how different blends affect greenhouse gas emissions,” GE said. Findings are expected to be shared with the industry, “with the hope of influencing adoption of green hydrogen by other states and nations,” it added. In another much-watched demonstration announced last year, GE will pilot an F-class dual-fuel gas and hydrogen plant at EnergyAustralia’s 316-MW Tallawarra B Power Station in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. As POWER has reported, that project will demonstrate how the coal-rich nation could accelerate its energy transition using gas. GE meanwhile last December bagged a contract to supply two GE 9HA.01 gas turbines for Harbin Electric Corp.’s Guangdong Huizhou combined cycle power plant in China. That 1.34-GW project will be expected to burn a blend of up to 10% of hydrogen by volume upon operation start in 2023. However, how many turbines will be able to achieve 100% hydrogen by volume will be highly dependent on hydrogen supply. “It’s one thing to say ‘I’ll burn a certain percentage of hydrogen,’ but if you can’t get it, or if you can’t get it reliably, or can’t get it with a fuel price that’s sustainably viable, economically,” that affects overall ambitions, Goldmeer noted on Friday. “Whether it’s viable because the price of hydrogen has come down, or you get a subsidy on the fuel price, or a subsidy on your electricity tariff, burning hydrogen has to make sense economically.”That could take regulatory or policy support, he noted.

Yet the commercial firms continue to attract major investment by venture capitalists and government agencies. In April, Venus Aerospace, a two-yearold Houston-based startup seeking to build a hypersonic airliner, closed a $20 million Series A funding round by Prime Movers Lab, a venture fund for startups hoping to create businesses from scientific breakthroughs. The Series A round added to a $3 million seed investment in Venus Aerospace that closed in March 2021. Two months earlier, a consortium of venture funds invested $29 million in Destinus SA, a Switzerlandbased startup founded by a Russian entrepreneur, that is developing a hydrogen-powered, hypersonic freighter.

Washington-based Radian Aerospace exited stealth mode a month before Destinus, raising $27.5 million in a seed round to develop a single-stage-to-orbit spaceplane, with letters of intent worth $1.5 billion for a range of potential services, including satellite launches, space station resupply and point-to-point transport.

The wave of new startups follows long-term efforts by Stratolaunch, SpaceX and Reaction Engines to field airborne satellite launchers, orbital transport ships and spaceplanes. In terms of attracting investment,Atlanta-based startup Hermeus has been the most successful.The company’s plan to develop a series of hypersonic vehicles—starting with the Quarterhorse demonstrator, which could be spun off into a revenue-generating testbed or operational system—has attracted $126 million in venture capital funding, including a stake by RTX Ventures and another investment by the U.S. Air Force worth up to $60 million. In all, nine commercial companies have raised more than $424 million in funding and contracts for hypersonic projects, along with another four startups that have yet to announce fundraising results.

The projects cover many different types of applications, ranging from satellite launchers and space transports to experimental testbeds. Not surprisingly, the diversity of applications is supported by an eclectic mix of operational concepts and propulsion technologies. History suggests the path to fielding a successful hypersonic vehicle is daunting. President Ronald Reagan’s “Orient Express” vision for a Mach 25 airliner ended in failure in 1990, with the cancellation of the Rockwell X-30 National Aero-Space Plane as budget estimates soared and technical concerns mounted. Subsequent efforts in the mid-1990s to field the McDonnell Douglas Delta Clipper and Lockheed Martin VentureStar fell victim to NASA budget cutting. A more recent attempt to demonstrate the potential for commerceoriented spaceplanes requiring a hypersonic reentry capability also failed, but not for any technical or cost reason. In 2017, DARPA picked Boeing over several bids by small companies for a $146 million contract to design and launch the XS-1, an experimental spaceplane that could release small satellites in orbit. But Boeing decided to walk away from the program in January 2020, a decision that came as the company was coping with the grounding of the 737 MAX and costly setbacks by other commercial and military programs unrelated to the XS-1. Despite the series of government-funded failures, the commercial imperative for many types of hypersonic vehicles is clear.

For example, the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stimulated demand for access to Earth orbit by reducing launch costs to as low as $2,938 per kilogram to low Earth orbit, according to the company’s standard rate card for launches in 2022. Although proven to be reliably reusable and highly successful, the Falcon 9 rocket remains burdened by certain inefficiencies inherent to any rocket, such as requiring a propellant mixture composed of likely 70-80% liquid oxygen. By switching to an air-breathing, hypersonic vehicle that is reusable, some of the new commercial startups hope to make a profit by dramatically lowering launch costs still further. Space Engine Systems, a Canadian startup, expects the ramjet-powered Hello-2 vehicle to launch small satellites to low Earth orbit for $950 per kilogram. Ohio-basedVelontra, meanwhile, has a similar objective for the Bronco, a reusable satellite launch system powered by a turbine-based combined-cycle engine. But the business model for commercial hypersonic flight remains challenging. Airbus and Boeing have sometimes struggled to make a profit on subsonic airliners. Air France and British Airways enjoyed profits from Concorde operation through most of its career, but the unexpected cost increases of developing the supersonic airliner would have driven the manufacturing team into bankruptcy without funding by the French and British governments. Attempting to deliver a profitable, hypersonic-speed, passenger transport, such as the Hermeus Halcyon, puts a lot pressure on the business case. A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST •
