Phoenix’s population grew from 1.4 million people in 2010 to 1.6 million in 2020, a rate of 11.2 percent, according to the Census Bureau. The increase has been fueled not just by immigration and sun-seeking retirees but also by the arrival of tech companies and middle-class families from California and other more expensive parts of the country seeking more affordable housing. The Phoenix metro area continued to sprawl outward into the desert, with outlying suburbs such as Buckeye growing by nearly 80 percent over the past 10 years. But Phoenix is also growing up, booming with new condo towers and rowhouses filling in the downtown. All this growth has raised anxieties about how the region will supply enough water for all the new residents and their yards when brutal droughts and hotter summers are draining rivers and reservoirs. The population boom across Phoenix and surrounding Maricopa County has also translated into a political shift. President Biden narrowly won Arizona’s 11 electoral votes last November, eking out a win in what had once been a reliably Republican presidential state. Even before the pandemic, they were leaving major cities like New York, Los Angeles,

In 2019, 5,958 millennials migrated to Phoenix, according to SmartAsset, which used the most recently available US Census Bureau data. The migration meant that 23% of Phoenix’s population was millennials. In April, CNBC reported that the trend of moving to Phoenix continued during the pandemic, citing data shared by LinkedIn and U-Haul. “Young, wealthy people are increasingly opting to put down roots in Arizona, a sign of the changing demographics that challenge the state’s longstanding reputation as a haven for retirees,” Insider’s Natasha Solo-Lyons wrote in July. “In particular, the capital of Phoenix ... has attracted relocators from coastal and Midwestern cities seeking a cheaper, more laid-back life.” A2Z MANUFACTURING WEST COAST

Only 52 U.S. companies remained on the Fortune 500 list from 1955 until 2019. And, one could argue that manufacturing is facing one of its largest disruptions—digital transformation—in modern history. “My prediction is that half of all American manufacturers will close their doors in the next 10-to-15 years,” says Jeremy Frank, CEO of KCF Technologies. Franks says he has heard loud and clear what’s going on with the sector as a board member of National Association of Manufacturers, a board member of the Hydraulic Institute, an active participate in a local MEP and by working with manufacturers including the world’s largest automotive companies. Of course, he doesn’t want to see that happen, so he formed his business in 2000 with the vision of “solving problems through the convergence of technology and people.” It’s the combination of these two essential components that will “save” manufacturing, he says. It’s very personal to Frank. At a recent company event he recalled, with emotion, how the factory where his grandfather worked, Westinghouse in Mansfield, Ohio, shut down and is now an empty parking lot. Avoiding that fate is his life’s mission. While his company advises manufacturers on what technologies will make them more efficient and able to stay in business, he’s calling for a public policy that ensures the vibrancy of the sector. He points to one plan that isn’t hitting the mark. The American Jobs Plan Initiative aims to creates job, but not the right ones. Frank says, “Simply creating more jobs is short-sighted and does nothing to address the manufacturing skills gap—specifically, the need for workers who can manage Industry 4.0 technology.” However, there are some government-backed plans that work very well. Frank points to the model of the Small Business Innovation Research program (SBIR), which invests in entrepreneurial companies. Each year the government sets aside around $3 billion for external R&D to small businesses. This program, along with the Small Business Technology Transfer program, which the SBA calls America’s Seed Fund, allows small businesses to explore technology with the goal of commercialization. “It’s a competitive process and has proven to be successful,” Frank says, noting that his company received $1 million in 2004 and today is a growing, thriving company. He thinks this program should be expanded. “We should be putting 10 times that number into small businesses as they create the majority of the jobs. And these are the companies tapping into the technology which will solve the knowledge gaps as well as create technologies of the future.”We also need to rework our education systems, says Frank. “It’s very hard for a two-year community college to be able to change quickly enough to match the expanding technological skills needed.” That’s why more employers are creating internal programs for on-thejob training.

“If education policies are not flexible enough to allow students to explore various pathways,” Curry says, “students may ultimately bypass even the best workforce development opportunities. I came across the idea of pursuing technology as a career by chance after already embarking on a serious course of post-secondary studies. If I was exposed to technical or STEM programs before college, I would have landed on my pathway much sooner.”

M e t a Platforms Inc.’s has preleased another Spring District building in Bellevue, this time taking 213,000 square feet, project developers Wright Runstad & Co. and Shorenstein Properties said Monday. The news comes five days after Meta (Nasdaq: FB), owner of Facebook and Instagram, said it would lease more than 700,000 square feet in Sunnyvale, California, near the company’s Menlo Park headquarters, as well as space in another Bay Area city, Burlingame.Together, the California leases total more than 1 million square feet, Bloomberg reported. Building 13 is the fifth Spring District building that Meta has leased in the emerging neighborhood.

NBBJ designed Building 13 and BNBuilders is the general contractor. Construction of the nine-story structure will start in 2022 with completion expected in 2024, the developers said. The five buildings total over 1.4 million square feet. Those, along with Meta’s offices in Seattle and Redmond, total 3.2 million square feet.That would be enough for more than 18,000 employees based on a commercial real estate industry space-per-employee standard. That’s well above the more than 7,000 employees Meta has in the Puget Sound region, so the new lease is the latest signal that Meta plans to grow significantly more here. Last year, after the purchase of the REI headquarters, Meta said it had 5,431 employees in Washington state in 2019. Nearly 1,175 available jobs in the Puget Sound region are listed on Meta’s website. In addition to Meta’s presence and the Global Innovation Center, the 36-acre Spring District has over 800 apartments. Here’s What’s On Aerospace Leaders’ Minds As 2021 Comes To A Close The demand for air travel and the planes to enable it returned in 2021 almost as suddenly as it declined the year before, leaving jet makers and their suppliers scrambling to adapt to the change of pace. As the year comes to a close, aerospace leaders forecast continued demand — and competition — from China, and are looking for ways to secure precarious supply chains and workforces.While sustainability has emerged as a top priority for the industry, manufacturers are divided on where to invest and how soon those strategies will bear fruit. Here are some top takeaways from conversations among industry and government leaders this fall:

China’s ability to perform quick pivots under its command-and-control leadership could give its manufacturers an edge as it grows to take on Washington’s “considerable” industry base, he said. That said, the relationship doesn’t have to be adversarial, Heck added. “I don’t think we should look at China as the enemy. But I do think we should look at them as our fiercest competitor and that we have to take that very seriously.” China likely won’t have the same outsize demand for commercial jets that it has in the past two decades, senior aerospace analyst Richard Aboulafia said in a recent virtual forecast. While its relationship with the West is changing as it prioritizes its fledgling domestic industry, Chinese jet makers are still heavily dependent on Western technologies from engines to avionics, which is likely to keep them at the table.

sheet to do so used the pandemic-driven recession to “buy up capacity they don’t have,” she said. Around 65% of the global aerospace giant’s costs come from its supply chain, which is still catching up to demand from the recovering airline industry. In response, Boeing created an internal team to better understand its 5,400-factory supplier network, which produces billions of parts that need to be delivered “just in time” to meet its production rates, she said. Those rates have increased to 19 planes per month by the end of the third quarter, the company said in its recent earnings call, and its inquiries have indicated its supply chain can support the 31 planes it plans to produce per month by 2022. Rising costs Rising labor costs are the most “organic” form of cost increases and a leading indicator of the inflationary pressures manufacturers are likely to see in the coming months, Aboulafia said.

While long-term pricing contracts could mask the trend in the short term, costs for materials have risen over the past several years while commercial jet prices have stayed stubbornly flat, squeezing profit margins for Boeing and Airbus. Sustainability investments Infrastructure is the watchword for sustainability efforts, aerospace leaders said. While manufacturers are game to develop technologies ranging from sustainable aviation fuels to hydrogen and battery-powered electric propulsion, each one will require huge investments to enable mass production and delivery, said Jon Gordon, co-founder of Hawthorne, California-based Universal Hydrogen. “The infrastructure problem is tremendous, but it can’t be the excuse anymore,” he said. “We don’t have time.” While sustainable technologies could take an unusual form — like the hinged wing that helped Boeing increase fuel efficiency on its 777X — fuel reduction and SAF are only an interim measure, he said. United Flies World’s First Passenger Flight On 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel Supplying One Of Its Engines

From the outside, there’s nothing unusual about the Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet operated by United Airlines that flew from Chicago’s O’Hare to Washington’s Reagan National Airport with 115 people on board yesterday. But the plane made history. It was the first commercial flight with passengers on board to use 100% drop-in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for one of the aircraft’s two engines. “Today’s SAF flight is not only a significant milestone for efforts to decarbonize our industry, but when combined with the surge in industry commitments to produce and purchase alternative fuels, we’re demonstrating the scalable and impactful way companies can join together and play a role in addressing the biggest challenge of our lifetimes,” said United CEO Scott Kirby, who was on the D.C. flight.

The jet used a pair of LEAP-1B engines developed by CFM International, a 50-50 joint company between GE and Safran Aircraft Engines. GE has also been researching the use of SAF in its engines. Recent flights operated by Etihad Airways and British Airways used a fuel mix containing SAF, and GE Aviation is also working with Emirates on plans to test 100% SAF in 2022. Currently, international standards following the process developed by ASTM International (which develops technical standards) permit airlines to use a maximum of 50% SAF in commercial flights. So on this demonstration flight, United operated one of the plane’s two engines on 100% conventional jet fuel and the other one on 100% SAF — about 500 gallons in each engine. The SAF used by the jet was “drop-in” ready, meaning it is interchangeable with conventional Jet A and Jet A-1 fuel and requires no modifications to engines or airframes.This also makes it compatible with the existing commercial fleet and the existing fuel distribution and storage infrastructure. “These molecules don’t know where they come from,” says Gurhan Andac, GE Aviation’s engineering leader for aviation fuels and additives, about the difference — or the lack thereof — between SAF and conventional jet fuel. Andac, who was also on board the United flight, has played an important role in researching biofuels and synthetic fuels for engines and promoting their use. He also chairs an international task force to develop standardized industry specifications supporting adoption of 100% SAF. GE Aviation’s SAF testing includes several industry-first flight tests: the first SAF

commercial demonstration flight (2008), the first SAF transatlantic flight of a large freight commercial airplane (2011), the first 100% SAF military jet flight (2016) and, earlier this year, the first use of power-to-liquid (PtL), in which renewable electricity is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, then the resulting H2 is used with captured CO2 to synthesize liquid hydrocarbon fuel. Besides CFM, United partnered on the flight with Boeing, Virent — a subsidiary of Marathon whose technology e n a bl e s 1 0 0 % drop-in SAF — and World Energy, the world’s first and North America’s only commercial SAF producer. United says it has made the largest commitment of any airline to the transition toward SAF. Last spring it launched the Eco-Skies Alliance program, in which a list of 29 corporate partners and counting have collectively contributed toward the purchase of approximately 5.7 million gallons of SAF this year alone. This is enough SAF to eliminate approximately 53,000 metric tons of GHG emissions, or enough to fly passengers over 372 million miles. Sustainable aviation fuel can be made from any of 60 different feedstocks — among them plant oils, algae, greases, fats, waste streams, alcohols, sugar s, captured CO2 and other alter native feedstock sources and processes. The Department of Energy estimates that the United States alone has the resources to produce 50–60 billion gallons of SAF per year. For context, commercial airlines will use about 57 billion gallons of fuel by the end of 2021, down from a peak of 95 billion gallons in 2019, according to Statista. By switching from petroleum to SAF — when you take into consideration the entire life cycle of the fuel — the aviation industry could reduce its carbon contribution from fuel by up to 80%, according to industry associations the Air Transport Action Group and the International Air Transport Association. But so far, only a fraction of 1% of the fuel consumed in aviation is SAF.To spur more investment in SAF and create more supply, demand must first grow, which is why United hopes the flight will set an example for others to follow. “Drop-in SAF is something our industry can adopt now to begin making inroads on our commitment to be net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” says Gaël Méheust, president and CEO of CFM International. “Along with our parent companies, GE Aviation and Safran Aircraft Engines, we applaud United for taking this bold initiative and look forward to even greater cooperation in the future.”

Manufacturers Concerned About Workforce, But Optimistic About 2022, Marcum Report Says More than two-thirds of respondents to accounting and advisory firm Marcum’s new manufacturing survey said recruitment is their biggest concern going into 2022. Forty percent were concerned about workforce training, and about 34% were worried about retirements. Health care costs were also a concern for 37% of respondents, and 31% had their eyes on higher taxes. But despite challenges, 77% of respondents were optimistic about the coming year . And about 80% were expecting higher revenues. A little more than half of respondents — about 54% — planned to grow their staff in the next year, the report said. Finding skilled labor ranked in the top three priorities for 72% of respondents. Other top priorities included cutting costs, increasing the use of and investing in technology, and entering new markets.

To attract employees, more than 80% of respondents said they planned to increase wages and/or benefits. COVID-19 had an impact on manufacturers, with 60% reporting lower revenue in 2020 than in 2019. And about 46% said the pandemic would permanently change how the company managed workforce safety measures. Forty percent said it would change how they manage the workplace environment, and 40% said they’d “do more with less,” the report noted. In 2020, nuclear power accounted for 56.8 per cent of Ontario’s electricity generation, compared to 24.4 per cent for water (hydro), 8.7 per cent for wind, 6.4 per cent for natural gas and 2.4 per cent for solar. While disposing of nuclear waste has always been a challenge, one SMR can prevent up to two megatonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually. OPG, a Crown utility, said the project would create 700 jobs during development, 1,600 during construction and manufacturing, 200 during operations and 160 when it is eventually decommissioned after about 60 years. “Nuclear is a key proven zero emissions baseload energy source that will help us achieve net zero as a company by 2040, and act as a catalyst for efficient economy-wide decarbonization by 2050,” said Ken Hartwick, OPG’s president and chief executive officer. Blueprint For The World: Ontario Picks GE Hitachi To Build New Generation of Small Nuclear Reactors In Canada

The project, which sources say will cost several billion dollars, would be Canada’s first commercial SMR and should be up and running by 2028.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG), the largest power supplier in Ontario, selected GE Hitachi to build the first SMR at Darlington, the only site in Canada currently licensed for a new nuclear reactor. “We’re excited to move forward with GE Hitachi and develop something here that all of us can be proud of and perhaps showcase to the rest of the world on how a new nuclear project can be done really well,” Hartwick said during a press conference.

Unlike the nation’s existing nuclear stations, the new reactor would not use Candu technology.

Last week, the province of Ontario selected GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy to build a grid-scale SMR and bring it online by the end of the decade.

Hartwick said that nuclear power will help OPG achieve its net-zero carbon emissions goal as a company by 2040 “and act as a catalyst for efficient economy-wide decarbonization by 2050.” Todd Smith, Ontario minister of energy, said that OPG “has taken the time and a lot of work to ensure that it selected the technology that best fits the unique characteristics of the Darlington site” and deliver Canada’s first commercial grid-scale SMR before the end of this decade. “This really is exciting news,” he added. and growing nuclear supply chain.” GE Hitachi has already started building partnerships with many local companies and suppliers to make this a success and with First Nations Power Authority (FNPA), an organization developing energy projects serving Canada’s Indigenous people, to tap into talent inside Canada’s Indigenous communities. GE Hitachi is currently seeking to hire and train field service technicians, who could be among the first global operation and maintenance experts trained on the BWRX-300 reactors. An SMR is defined as a reactor that produces up to 300 megawatts of electricity. GE Hitachi is now developing the BWRX-300, which, in addition to its selection in Ontario, is under consideration for projects in the U.S., Poland and Estonia. But GE Hitachi also wants to help Canada become the first global center of excellence for this technology. “Canada has significant nuclear energy sector experience and is a global leader in the commercial nuclear power industry,” says Lisa McBride, GE Hitachi’s country leader for SMRs in Canada. “We are looking to leverage the expertise in Canada and build on that for the future of SMRs.” Heather Chalmers, president and CEO of GE Canada, said that GE was “committed to tackling the world’s toughest challenge. Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin leads one of three teams to share $415.6 million in design contracts. Also granted funds were Houston-based space infrastructure company Nanoracks ($160 million) and aerospace and defense giant Northrop Grumman ($125.6 million). Blue Origin announced plans in October to develop the Orbital Reef in partnership with Colorado-based Sierra Space, along with The Boeing Co., Arizona State University and others. The project would combine Sierra Space’s Large Integrated Flexible Environment (LIFE) expandable fabric habitats with power and structural hardware from Blue Origin. The awards cover around 40% or less of the cost of each of the three design programs, with the companies footing the bill for the remaining costs, said Phil McAlister, NASA’s director of commercial spaceflight. The contracts include milestones for critical design review, testing and hardware demonstrations that will provide a “clear measure of progress and quality” and reduce risk, McAlister said on a conference call with media members Dec. 2. The company said it plans to launch two satellites this month, with another four scheduled to go up before the end of the year. That would bring its constellation up to 12, allowing the company to take imagery at hourly intervals. The company is seeing its strongest growth from U.S. and foreign government customers looking to pair imagery with artificial intelligence, O’Toole said. BlackSky has around 168 employees across office in Seattle and Herndon, Virginia, and is the primary customer for Tukwila-based satellite maker LeoStella, in which it has a 50% ownership stake. The company went public through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company in September, ending with around $197 million in proceeds after paying off some of its debt. Between a 10,000-square-foot location in Dixon and the new location in West Sacramento, Cummins has 80 employees working in the region, and it plans to hire more next year, Davis said. Cummins has an option for more space in West Sacramento should it need it.

The alternative power innovation center will work on developing, testing and perfecting hydrogen fuel cells to power big trucks and busses, which need further range and faster refueling than battery-powered engines allow.

“We think a lot of the innovation in the zerocarbon space is here,” Davis said, adding that a lot of the early adapters of the technology are also in California.

Some of the innovations the center will work on include developing the best fit of fuel cells and battery for specific applications.The center will also develop and test power management to make the vehicles work optimally without being too large or heavy, Davis said.

The Califor nia Fuel Cell Partnership was also attractive because it has a hydrogen fueling station on site, she said. Cummins has been a longtime member of the California Fuel Cell Partnership, an industry advocacy group founded in 1999. Cummins, which was founded in 1919, makes truck and train engines,

In heavy equipment, the fuel cell powers the battery, and, in some cases, the fuel cell also powers the vehicle directly, such as in the case of a heavy truck climbing a steep grade.That kind of system management requires sophisticated software, which Cummins is also developing and testing. The West Sacramento location will also work on converting customer trucks to fuel cell systems, it will provide and install fuel cell systems for original equipment manufacturers and it may make its own vehicles at the center, Davis said.The center also has a testing center for engines and powertrains. Lockheed Martin is part of a consortium now contracted by NASA to design the Starlab commercial space station, as part of the agency’s Commercial Low-Earth Orbit development program. Starlab will be the anchor for NASA’s initiative to promote the commercial space economy and provide scientific and crew capabilities prior to the retirement of the International Space Station. Starlab, unveiled in October, will be owned and operated by Nanoracks, a commercial space-services provider whose major stakeholder isVoyager Space. Those two companies are the other participants in the Starlab consortium. In addition, Starlab backers see it as a destination for space tourists. Space research is the primary proposition, with four laboratories: a biology lab, plant habitation lab, physical science and materials research lab, and an open workbench area. The space station – to be built by Lockheed – will be a large, inflatable habitat with a separate metallic docking node. At 340-m3 it will house four persons, with a 60-kW power and propulsion element and a large robotic arm for handling cargo and payloads. NASA’s investment will be supplemented by “customer pre-buy opportunities” and public-private partnerships. The agency will have the opportunity to purchase crew and payload services on Starlab through separate services contracts with Nanoracks. “Starlab is the confluence of Lockheed Martin’s rich space expertise and history, Nanoracks’ innovation, and Voyager’s financial savvy.This team is equipped to aid NASA on its mission to expand access to LEO and to enable a transformative commercial space economy,” stated Lisa Callahan, v.p. and general manager, Commercial Civil Space at Lockheed Martin.

New Report Makes Case For More Support For Oregon Manufacturers Oregon manufacturing is everything from microchips to fish and chips, and its importance to the state is growing at a crucial time, according to a new report published Wednesday by state business groups. “Oregon punches above its weight for manufacturing,” said Angela Wilhelms, president and CEO of Oregon Business and Industry, which commissioned the new manufacturing study along with the Oregon Business Council.“I think what the report really illustrates is the breadth and the scope of manufacturing impact in Oregon,” Wilhelms said. The sector spans areas from technology to the food industry and, according to the report, could grow further as companies bring parts of the supply chain closer to home and government support for domestic manufacturing has bipartisan backing. “A state that was not known for manufacturing a half-century ago has emerged as a growth leader,” the report’s authors write. “As the country rebuilds its domestic manufacturing capacity during this decade, Oregon finds itself in a competitive position to grow jobs in a sector recognized for its competitive compensation and training opportunities.” Among the reports findings: • • •

Oregon’s 214,000 manufacturing jobs contributed $33 million to state GDP in 2020. Oregon’s share of the total national manufacturing GDP grew 50% from 1% to 1.5% in the last 50 years. A 10% increase in state manufacturing output would support 66,000 new jobs and generate $800 million in state and local government revenue.

Wilhelms singled out that last statistic. “That’s extraordinary,” she said. “We should be thinking about ways to get there, we should be thinking about ways to support our manufacturing industry broadly and allow them to realize that growth.” Among the r e p o r t ’s takeaways for policy makers should be workforce training to help manufacturers hire and grow, making usable land zoned and available for manufacturing development, and looking at how layers of permitting and regulatory policy affect the sector. By Stephen Hannemann When needed, it’s always a great feeling when seeing a restroom door open! But upon my approach on a recent day, I found the door open but the room occupied. A man was on his knees with rag in hand cleaning the commode. I immediately stepped back out of view and watched. This individual was not doing a slipshod piece of work! He was cleaning and polishing every nook and crevice of that porcelain throne. From obscured observation, I realized he was concentrating intently and performing his task purposefully. The man was in his early to mid-20’s. I supposed when he was in high school his aspiration was not to be a janitor. I might be wrong. But I witnessed a man doing a job to the best of his ability – exceedingly well above and beyond any requirement the job called for. I had a humbling learning experience in that brief five to ten minutes while I watched and waited for this young man to finish. I don’t know if this individual enjoyed his work or not, but clearly, he put his heart into his labor. I love what I do, meeting and helping people, selling the services of the companies I represent, writing, and speaking on occasion. But there are times when I know that I am not giving 100%. The man I watched humbled me, but also inspired me. It led me to think: What if people in every job, vocation, or career, gave a 100% effort? If husbands made a 100 % effort in their marriages, if fathers and mothers gave 100% effort as parents, if managers gave 100% effort for their employees and the employees gave 100% and expressed their gratitude in the workplace – what would our world look like? I know, it’s a pipe dream, but you don’t have to be a “Somebody” to inspire people. I learned that on a trip to the restroom in a grocery store a few weeks ago. Oh, by the way, I have never been in a cleaner restroom. This past year my articles have been about the transforming power of a positive attitude in the workplace.
