I have the pleasure of introducing to you another issue of the Praga Journal that talks about many exciting things. The Praga brand was founded 110 years ago and manufactured a vast number of automobiles, trucks, buses, motorcycles, airplanes, military and agricultural machinery and vehicles during its time. In this issue of the Praga Journal, we bring you an overview of these amazing 110 years, as well as some recent news. YouTuber Jon Olsson rigorously tested the Praga R1R; he took it for an epic 1,800 km test drive around Europe, and also tested its performance on snow.

DANIEL SLIVA CEO of IPKarting

The IPK Praga karting factory made many technical advancements and established amazing partnerships. Our young drivers can start in one of our junior teams racing in international races. They can then continue with our team in other karting categories, progressing to the shifter class and going directly to the single-seater Formula 4 thanks to the collaboration with well-established teams like Cram Motorsport. The Praga Alfa multi-purpose aircraft enjoyed its premiere at the Aviation Show. Since 1907, when Praga was founded, many incredible stories and achievements have come to fruition, lots of things are happening right now, and much more is yet to come. Enjoy reading the new Praga Journal.

PRAGA CARS AT AUTOSPORT INTERNATIONAL 2017 Praga Cars recently attended the Autosport International show in Birmingham for the third time. Autosport International is the acclaimed Racing Car Show. The biggest Motorsport show. 4 days of all motorsports from the fastest and craziest cars to the biggest motorsports celebrities. If you like motorsports, this is the event to add to your calendar and this year’s edition was no exception. Our stand’s size has increased since the last year. It included the Praga R1T and R1R. The R1R is the very car in which Jon Olsson recently drove over 1800km and many fans of the Swedish Freestyle skier recognised the car immediately. We offered visitors to sit in the R1T which was an enjoyable experience for all. Some people noting that “it feels much bigger once you’re inside” and others saying “its actually very comfortable”. One visitor even called it the highlight of the show for him. Our R1 simulator was also part of our stand. Running driving simulator Asetto Corsa, which recently added the Praga R1 as downloadable content, the simulator was a huge hit with the fans often seeing queues of people waiting for their turn to feel what it’s like to drive the Praga R1. The simulator started its life as a full carbon monocoque used for the R1 crash test for homologation. As it sustained little damage during the rigorous testing, it found a new purpose in form of a simulator. The first two days of the show are mostly for industry professionals and gave us a chance to meet new potential suppliers, dealers and a number of other people to discuss future Praga projects. The weekend being the public days is far busier and it was during these days that we had crowds of people surrounding the stand. It was great to meet so many people and speak to everyone who was interested in the cars. Each year, when we attend the show, the response from the public just gets better and better and we look forward to seeing everyone again in 2018!

AK-Racing e.K. „AK-Racing e.K., is a well known and established company in Germany. It was founded in 1978. Peter Wendl, the owner of the company made his first experience with the industry in 1970, when he became a kart driver. He participated at several national and international races. Due to the fact that he was driving with IAME engines and also had a goodcollaboration with Bruno Grana, he decided to sell IAME spare parts at the track. This was the beginning of AK-Racing e.K.! In 1982, Peter Wendl became a representative of karting for the ADAC, the „German Automobile Club“. This helped a lot to establish new series to Germany. His biggest success was the introduction of the IAME X30 Challenge at the ADAC Kart Masters a couple of years ago, Germany’s biggest karting series. Peter always had a good connection to the Praga brand and therefore it was just a matter of time when both companies will start a collaboration. If you are searching for a reliable and fast developing partner in the chassis area it is a very tough job.

RAGA IS DEFINITELY TOP NOTCH IN THOSE AREAS.

In 2017, AK-Racing finally became a member of the Praga familiy which was a logical step into the right direction. This grants the possibilty to deliver a well known chassis and high quality spare parts made in Italy to the customer. Including a fast delivery time, which is rare in the business.“

PETR PTÁČEK JR. WELCOMES ETERNA AS A NEW PERSONAL SPONSOR Accurate timing is everything in motorsport, so Petr Jr is delighted to confirm prestigious watchmaker, Eterna, as one of his new personal sponsors. The Swiss brand, leader in the timepiece design and technical innovation since 1856, has welcomed Petr to its family of ambassadors and the 14-year-old will wear a watch from Eterna’s ’Kontiki’ collection as he continues his 2017 programme of European and world championship races in karting’s category KZ2. Eterna (www.eterna. com) is delighted that a young, determined and highly-rated driver of Petr’s calibre has joined its ranks and is looking forward to establishing a long and successful relationship. Petr said: “As a young racing driver, it’s fantastic to be entering a unique partnership that stands for precision and performance – two of the things you need if you want to be successful on the race track.” “I recently visited the Eterna headquarters in Switzerland and was really impressed by what I saw. I’m looking forward to wearing my new ’Kontiki’ watch when I race across Europe and I’ll work hard to make sure my partnership with Eterna is a successful one.”

IPKarting signs contract with XERAMIC Kart Lubricants This year XERAMIC® Kart Lubricants celebrates the 20 years anniversary in karting and recently signed a sponsor contract with IPKarting. CEO Ton Koebolt: “We are very happy with this 5 years sponsor agreement with IPKarting, especially because they are growing very fast in the world of karting due to their product quality, marketing strategy and performance”. “For the past 20 years XERAMIC® has been the leading company in the kart lubricants and it is a privilege for us to be related to IPKarting”. XERAMIC® Kart Lubricants was founded in 1996 and soon became one of the leading brands in karting. It was mainly the passion for the sport that brought this company the status of number one for many years. Continuous research and development of new materials as

well as long-term testing in laboratory and on the karting track ensures that the XERAMIC® brand stands for quality. The 2 different XERAMIC® 2T Karting Oils, the famous Castor 2T Evolution and the SynMax 2T Oil, are used by famous engine manufacturers, engine tuners and racing teams all over the world. Recently the Dutch based company introduced the new XERAMIC® Kart Chain Lube. “We received the feedback from the market that there was a big demand for a very sticky chain lube which works under all weather conditions and circumstances”. “Unlike other brands we only introduce new products once not just us but mainly our customers are fully satisfied with the performance of the product”. “It took us almost 1 year to say that the XERAM-

IC® label can be placed on this product”. Successfully launched on the KartMesse Exhibition in January this year Ton Koebolt says “Proudly we can say that this is the best chain lube we have ever produced and therefore the best chain lube in the world”.

DOUGLAS WHEELS – DWT RACING:

Proudly providing Praga’s O.E. Karting wheels! Our designers, engineers & racers collaborate to create the best possible off-road race wheels. Over 20 years of evolution of design innovation, metallurgy and forming processes have created second to none wheels in the terms of performance and features. DWT ALUMILITE wheels have won more championships than any other wheels on the market. With thousands of dealers around the world that offer our great products made in USA, you’ll have no problem finding what you need. In the early days of kart racing, our founder (3 times National Karting Champion) Douglas Henline found limitations in the wheel technology of that day. In his pursuit of performance, he devoted himself to designing and manufacturing a new breed of superior wheels. His passion, dedication and

engineering skills led to the founding of Douglas Wheel in 1991. After almost two decades of innovation, industry leadership and a staggering number of championships in multiple forms of motor sports, DWT continues to lead the way in performance wheel technology. Though rich with history, we are always evolving by expanding our product lines, manufacturing processes and rigorous testing procedures in the U.S.A. In our ongoing quest to keep building the best products possible, we have developed unique manufacturing processes by combining our own proprietary forming techniques with conventional material shaping and molding methods. Each piece that we produce undergoes a series of state of the art processes to assure and maintain that revered DWT dependability. As always, we are devoted to producing the best performing wheels on the planet. We are proud to be manufacturing our LITECAST (cast aluminium) line of wheels in the U.S.A. •

TECHNICALFEATURES

IPK Technical

FEATURES Development and research in IPK never stop. Supported by races and track tests of Praga Karts, Formula K and OK1 racing teams, company’s engineers have developed a number of innovations regarding several components, which have not just been modified to improve performance, but also, in many cases, analysed to improve ease of use and increase driver safety.

2017 13

FRONT AND REAR DISC BRAKES The IPK braking systems disc brakes have been completely revised, both from a design point of view, as well as the material from which they are made. Following extensive research and testing, IPK technicians confirmed the choice of a type of material with better properties that increase performance. The new material combines with the new disc design, featuring new generation surface grooves and holes.

THE CHANGES ALLOW: -Increased braking force -Decreased disc and pad wear -Uniform braking under all conditions -Increased braking control The new discs are compatible with the IPK group’s braking systems, being identical in size and having the same fixings as the previous versions.

BRAKE PAD SAFETY SCREWS IPK has always paid the utmost attention to detail in its products, starting from the braking system, both for maximum performance and to ensure the best safety possible. The safety aspect is what actually led to the introduction of Seeger and self-locking nuts on brake pads. This innovation is more reliable than the previous method, which only involved a split pin.

FLOORPAN The new floorpan designed by IPK differs from the previous version in the way it is attached to the front of the chassis: while the old model was only attached at two points, the new version has three points. The attachment points, placed at the centre and sides of the front of the kart, allow a greater number of set-up solutions, as well as increased safety.

2017 14

TECHNICALFEATURES

ROTAX DD2 The Rotax mono-brand has always been one of the most widespread and popular in the world of karting. IPK, with Praga chassis, has been a partner of the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals since 2012, which is a proof of the great harmony between the Austrian engine manufacturer and the IPKarting group. For the start of the new season, IPK engineers have developed several upgrades capable of improving the chassis used in the Rotax DD2 class. The Rotax 125 DD2 is a motor with a chainless transmission, featuring a two-speed gearbox controlled by levers positioned directly on the steering wheel. Launched in 2002, the engine required a chassis that was fully dedicated to the class: IPK employed all of its know-how to produce a kart capable of translating the power of the DD2, Rotax brand’s flagship engine, into a high-speed performance. The improvements for the new season especially concern the accessories, redesigned for easier and more effective use on the track.

DD2 ENGINE SUPPORT The engine support for the Rotax DD2 class has been completely revised. Previously, the engine was attached to two steel plates welded to the body. Now, however, the engine is attached to the chassis using aluminium supports. This solution greatly reduces the vibrations generated by the engine and, importantly, improves the performance and lifespan of the chassis, because it allows the frame to „function“ better mechanically.

DD2 SILENCER SUPPORTS Another innovation for the Rotax DD2 class regards the silencer supports. The new components are newly designed and are made of different materials than those used in the past. These characteristics provide several advantages: -Increased range of adjustments -Increased strength and lifespan -Increased elasticity, to better absorb exhaust vibrations

DD2 REAR BUMPER SUPPORTS Compared to the previous model the rear bumpers for the Rotax DD2 have been changed completely. New components are no longer directly welded to the chassis, but bolted on. The new system provides several advantages: -The supports can be changed -Chassis performance improves with reduced rear end stiffness -Reduced risk of the frame being damaged in case of a collision

DD2 NEW AIR FILTER SUPPORT PLATE A simple, but very clever modification was implemented in the new air filter support plate for the Rotax DD2 class, featuring an increased number of attachment points, so that the filter could be attached to the chassis safely in any position.

Together in PRAGA, from the first kart to cars

From the first attempt in karting to driving a car one day. This is the dream of all the boys who come to motorsport. So far, however, finding someone who could support, improve and advise pilots throughout such an exciting and challenging path was not easy. Thanks to prestigious partnerships, Praga is now able to do so, providing a range of services and opportunities that introduce young drivers to motorsport and accompany them to the threshold of professionalism. Fully realising the importance of the first contact with the world of karting and the special needs of younger drivers, Praga dedicates its full attention to them, thanks to a team specifically dedicated to the 60 Mini class: the Praga Kart Junior Team. The following step, for those who start in this class, is possible thanks to Racing Team Praga, which is involved in all national and international classes of karting: from the OK-Junior to the more powerful KZ, passing, of course, via the OK. The Praga drivers are among the protagonists of all of the most important events in the calendar, supported by a team with some of the most experienced and expert professionals in the paddocks and covered by a top level organizational structure. Up to 14-15 years of age, karting is the ideal environment to improve as a driver and learn all the tricks of the trade. However, in order to continue afterwards, it is necessary to take the „ leap“ forward to cars: this is difficult, both due to the need to adapt to a new driving style and, above all, the difficulty of finding a team that suits your characteristics and capabilities. This is not the case of Praga drivers, who, even in this case, have access to a fast track that was established, precisely, in 2017, thanks to an agreement between Praga and Cram Motorsport - a team with a long tradition, which has looked after such drivers as Massa, Maldonado, Kanaan and Valsecchi, just to mention a few. Through this partnership, the official colours of Praga can also be found in the world of cars, with participation in the races of the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth, which races on the major Italian racetracks and, indeed, may be the ultimate springboard for launching a career as a driver. Starting with karts and ready to achieve the most prestigious goals. Always with Praga.

FORMULA 4 also sees the involvement of Praga

Thanks to an agreement with Cram Motorsport, single-seaters in Praga livery will also take part in the next Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth. A prestigious partnership that adds another element to the value chain of an organisation that, beginning with the preparatory kart classes, is able to chaperone the progression of its drivers, step by step, to motorsport. „Project“. This has always been the key word behind decisions made by Praga. A brand with a history spanning more than a century, but which looks to the future with a continuous desire to improve and add important elements to continue its winning paths. This is the precise reason for the recent agreement signed with the Cram Motorsport, a major Italian company based in Erba, in the province of Como, that has been operating for over 15 years in the major preparatory formulas created for drivers who start in karting and strive for a career in motorsport. From 2017, Cram Motorsport and Praga’s know-how and techni-

cal means will combine to take on an adventure that will see single-seaters with the well-known white and blue Praga livery competing on the prestigious circuits of the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth. The agreement makes Praga unique in motorsport, since its vast organisation will comprise a value chain capable of accompanying drivers right up to the threshold of professionalism. If, on the one hand, the aim of the new Rotax Junior Sport class, a result of cooperation between Praga and Rotax, is to provide youngsters with new opportunities to get closer to motorsport, the partnership with Cram provides a natural entry point to the world of single-seaters for drivers who, having been brought up with team Praga, are looking for a way to continue to nurture their talent during their professional development. It is a very prestigious and traditionally successful path, with the team currently led by brothers Simon and Gabriele Rosei able to

2017 19

boast a trophy room containing 14 championship titles and 107 victories. It also has a list of drivers which includes Felipe Massa, Pastor Maldonado, Tony Kanaan, Ben Hanley, Davide Valsecchi and Jaime Alguersuari. The enthusiasm for this new adventure is mutual: Praga is proud to expand its range of activities in motorsport, positioning itself as one of the most attentive and active organisations for young talent. Cram, for its part, is excited to embark on a new adventure that will allow it to develop more drivers in a highly technical and formative environment. In addition to championship F.4 races, the new partnership will lead to other promotional initiatives featuring single-seater in Praga colours, which could take part in certain track events or be used in tests as a prize for Praga’s most deserving drivers.

RACEREPORT

PRAGA TAKES 3RD OVERALL at the Red Bull Ring Photo: Petr Frýba

Team Aschoff had announced earlier this year that they would take part in the full DMV GTC. Due to other priorities for their team, they had decided to miss the race at Red Bull ring and therefore missed out on some important points for the series. Luckily with support from the Praga team, both manpower and horsepower, they were able to take part in this exciting race with one of our factory R1Ts. They would be joined by our works driver Aleš Jirásek in a second R1T. The race weekend consisted of two 30 minute sprint races and one 60 minute endurance race. The Dunlop 60 endurance race was a joint venture between the DMV GTC and FIA CEZ, this assured a packed grid of serious machinery, 35 cars in total. Amongst others the race featured a Pagani Zonda, Renault RS01, Lamborghini Huracans and a gaggle of other GT3s. To say the Red Bull Ring is less than ideal for the Praga R1T is quite an understatement. The track is one long straight leading into a tight corner after another. This type of track favours high-horsepower over high-downforce. Some cars feature more than twice the power of the Praga. Nevertheless, we still have our eyes set on the podium finish.

QUALIFYING:

Friday was qualifying day with quali for all three races spread throughout the day. The first of the sprint races saw the qualifying in the morning, albeit late enough for the air temperature to rise to 22 degrees. Aleš put his car on P4, recording a lap time 4 seconds faster than last years best lap at this track. The improvements made over the winter are clearly paying off. Lap times improved throughout the day and the second round of qualifying gave us our best results. P3 going into the second of the sprint races. This is really the best possible result for this track with this competition. The last of the qualifying was for the Dunlop 60. Getting a clean lap for qualifying among 35 cars is not easy and a full course yellow brought the session to an early end leaving us in a respectable fifth place on the grid.

RACE:

Race 1 saw Aleš starting P4 and Max Aschoff on P15. Aleš held his position trough the entire race and a retirement of the leading Zonda endured Aleš a podium finish in the first race of the day.

2017 21

As Max moved his way up the pack an exciting battle occurred between Max and Alois in the 911 GT3R with Alois pulling away on the straights and Max catching up in the corners and especially in the second more complex half of the track where the Praga had a downforce advantage. Max would finish P13, two places higher than his starting position was. “I got under the wing of Alois Rieder for some laps, which made him nervous. He made one or two minor mistakes. At first I was not close enough, but then the opportunity came to overtake, I do not know where I got it, I think it was in turn 2.” Max Aschoff. Despite the weekend off to a good start with a podium finish in the first race, Race 2 saw the unfortunate retirement of Aleš in the R1T. The blow-off valve was not releasing the pressure as it should. This gave lots of power, but only for a short time as the gearbox is not made to handle the amount of torque that was being put through it. Despite the efforts to repair the gearbox the weekend was over. The car had a good prospects for two more podiums throughout the day which made

the retirement even harder for Aleš. “Of course, I am sorry for our retirement. I believed in a duel with the leading pair – Pagani Zonda and Lamborghini Huracan – at the later stage of the race, when we usually take advantage of the consistence of our speed. In the end, the supercharger vent membrane clogged up, causing that the torque increase led to the breakdown of the gear shaft of the transmission,” Aleš Jirásek explained his retirement on Saturday. Max and Aleš would go on to share a car for the Dunlop 60 endurance race. They would start 19th on the grid and have to slowly work their way up through the pack. They would gain 10 places over the course of one hour and finish 9th overall and 5th among the DMV GTC cars. “It´s a pity that due to the failure of the vehicle number 29 we could not start from fifth position Aleš had achieved in the qualifier; we could try to win. Red Bull Ring is not the right track for our car, so apart from the breakdown, we are very satisfied with our results,” Jiří Lojan CEO of PRAGA Cars.

RACEREPORT

Praga R1T:

2x P1at

Most DMV Praga competed in the DMV GTC race at Most Autodrom last weekend. It was the second time this year Praga took part in the series after racing at the Red Bull Ring earlier this year. Again, we joined one of our customers also in the R1T who is competing in the full series. As opposed to the Red Bull Ring, Most Autodrom is a track that favours the lighter more downforce oriented cars such as the Praga. The race would also be the home race for driver Aleš Jirasek. The race weekend consisted of the usual two 30-minute sprint races and one hour long endurance race. We took the opportunity to do some testing for our upcoming improved turbo system for the R1T. We came away from the weekend with some important data and improvements for the next test in the coming months. We also tested new uprights and front suspension set-up that also gave some valuable improvements. Due to some schedule changes Friday consisted of qualifying and the race for the Dunlop 60 endurance race and qualifying for R1 of DMV GTC. Aleš qualified in 4th place for the endurance race. During the race

he took the lead from the R8 LMS after around 20 minutes however we chose to stay on the same tyres after the mandatory 120 second pitstop whereas the R8 changed to new tyres. This gave no chance for Aleš to maintain the lead and he finished in second place with Max Aschoff also in a Praga R1T right behind him. Two Pragas on the podium for the first race was a good start to the weekend. We missed qualifying for R1 and Aleš would have to start from the back of the grid. The car was ready however for R2 qualifying on Saturday and Aleš set a very impressive 1:31.079 to put himself on pole for the last race of the weekend. R1 saw Aleš starting from the back of the grid in P14. He quickly made his way up the grid and finished in a very impressive P1. For most of the race Tuple lead the race in the unrestricted Audi R8 LMS but Aleš took the lead with 10 minutes left to go of the sprint race. Aleš dominated R2 and stayed out in front for the entire 30 minutes.

2017 23

GTC Aleš had this to say about the weekend, “Almost everything went well for us during the race weekend. The main target was testing of some new parts on the chassis and obviously we wanted to be the first car under chequered flag. We were second in Dunlop 60 minutes race, which was good, because we did not use new tyres and we still could achieve a pretty good speed. Than we won both sprint races on Saturday including qualifying with time 1:31,0, which is the new record for Praga in Most. Especially the first race I really enjoyed, because we missed the quali and we had to start from end of the field, so it was a race full of close overtakings. I have to say big thanks to everyone in Praga and wish them nice upcoming summer holidays.” A near hat-trick of P1 finishes for Aleš in the Praga R1T only leaves room for improvement in the upcoming races. Praga will take part in the FIA-CEZ at our home track, Slovakia Ring. See you there!

DAY 1

Prague to Monaco The story of the most epic road trip starts here in Prague. An eight day road trip covering almost 6000km. And for the Praga R1R, more than 1800km. So far the furthest the R1R has ever travelled in one stretch. One person comes to mind when recruiting a driver for such an event. Jon Olsson. World class freestyle skier and notorious enthusiast for cars. There may be no one else in the world who has more experience with “Le Mans prototype” styled cars for the road. Two Gumball 3000 rallies with his Rebellion R2K and four more with various other supercars means he has more than enough experience with endurance driving and this makes him the perfect test driver for this trip. The ultimate test drive and with the ultimate test driver. Of course the story would not be complete without a visit to the place where the R1R feels most at home… The track. We start the 14 hour drive to Monaco with coffee in every cup holder, snacks in every compartment. The hours as well as the borders pass quickly. Germany - Austria - Switzerland - Italy. We drive into the darkness, the mountains, the fog. As we approach Monaco well into the early morning hours we stop to admire the view from the hills of the

Côte d’Azur. The lights of Monaco await the R1R. However this will not be the first visit for the R1R to Monaco. No, the R1R is becoming kind of a regular to this country. In 2015 the visitors of the Grand Prix weekend had the opportunity to see the R1R for the first time. As we pull into the hotel just off Casino Square we roll the R1R out of the trailer. As tempting as it is to ask the valet to “park it up front” we spare him the service and drive it up ourselves. The valets in Monaco have seen almost every super sport car you can name so it’s not surprising that not much gets their attention. But, they haven’t seen anything quite like the R1R ever before and are instantly intrigued by what we have driven up to their 5-star hotel. A spot that would normally be reserved for a Rolls Royce a Bentley or perhaps a Ferrari is now occupied by a full blown race car. We check in for a few hours sleep before the big day.

DAY 2

Monaco to Barcelona We wake up to what seems like a summer day compared to the weather we left behind in Prague. The Christmas decorations

2017 27

around casino square seem somewhat out of place with the Riviera sun beating down on them. We take the R1R out for a short cruise through Monaco and drive the obligatory F1 track. Then we pass the hairpin and take a left detouring from the F1 track and pass the Grimaldi forum. We pass the Ferrari, Rolls Royce and McLaren dealers. The streets are filled with people taking pictures of the R1R. We turn around and head towards Casino square. The valet takes a little convincing but eventually allows us to park the car outside Cafe du Paris for just long enough to drink a quick espresso. Compared to the F1 and Top Marques weekend Monaco feels eerily quiet. Nevertheless, the R1R attracts attention of a crowd wherever it comes. We bring the car back to the hotel in order to swap the seat for the next driver, Jon Olsson. “Holy motherf***ing s**tballs“ is Marcus’ initial reaction to seeing the R1R. “What is that?” asks Marcus. “This is our ride to Marbella” Jon says with a smile on his face. “Are you kidding me?!” Markus says repeatedly “you gotta be kidding?!”. We greet the pair and do a quick run through the car. Jon takes the first seat in what will become his new home for the next 3 days. He is pleasantly surprised with the seating position in the car, even stating it’s perfect for his back. Marcus and Jon

jump in and follow us out onto Casino square. We head to Jon’s apartment and he takes the opportunity to use the now empty trailer to bring his mountains of ski equipment with him to Marbella. We finish loading the trailer and pick up Janni. Jon in the R1 and our factory driver Tomas in the safety car quickly disappear into the Monegasque tunnels. We convoy along the Cote d’Azur with the R1R turning every head as the sun sets in the hills. We pull up for the first fuel stop a few hours into the journey. Jon gives his first impressions of the car and notes there is a problem, he really wants it! As we are filling up, a Mercedes-McLaren SLR pulls up next to us. A car that would usually be quite a sight but in the presence of the R1R it looks somewhat less exciting. We go from fuel stop to fuel stop. Despite being in Spain it is after all mid-December and the R1R prototype does not yet have a heater. Jon brings out his race suit for warmth and looks more like he is ready for his next stint at Le Mans than a commute home. We arrive at the W Hotel in Barcelona after midnight. Jon still somehow manages to look full of energy as he talks to his camera. He ends the day as we do and we all get some of the much needed rest in preparations for an even longer drive tomorrow.

2017 28

2017 29

DAY 3

Barcelona to Marbella We start the morning swapping out the single seat for the double seat configuration so that Jon may have some company for the next 1000km he is about to embark on. The swap goes quickly and is ready before everyone has finished their breakfast. Once the swap is complete Marcus and Jon get comfortable together in the car and in the meantime a crowd has gathered to see the car depart. Marcus is far from the smallest person to ever sit in the R1R and yet he says “there is plenty of space, this is comfy!”. We leave Barcelona and almost immediately Jon gets pulled over by the police. Not for speeding or reckless driving but just for the police to confirm that the car is really road legal. They can barely believe it when Jon hands over all the appropriate documents and they are soon on their way, but not before the policemen get a quick picture of the car. Jon and Marcus cruise along the Spanish highways stopping only for fuel and Red Bull. About halfway into the trip, Janni switches seats with Marcus. Janni is not noted for being the avid car fan that Jon is, however, she is still excited for the trip as she says “now I’m going to sleep!”. With the sound insulation minimal in the R1R to keep weight down sleeping in the car is no easy feat. She stashes the car with snacks saying “you can fit everything in this car.” Some miscommunication and a heavy foot sends Jon and the support car in two very different directions. Although still with the same destination the support car heads inland and Jon and Janni take the scenic coastal route. This means Jon and Janni are alone with the car for the next 6 hours. Normally, this would not be an issue, but with the car being still in a prototype phase and facing the fact that it has never been driven to this extent, it leaves us wondering if he will make it home and hoping not to hear of any incidents on the radio. The pair battle the cold well into the night even stopping for a jacket and scarfs at a petrol station. They drive on and eventually arrive home late but safe. Jon navigates his way up the very steep driveway managing to avoid scraping the front splitter. The car held up and did its job of putting a smile on the face of anyone who gets inside. Jon is officially in love with the car and he gives a speech to his audience about the philosophy of the car, which could not have been better even if we had written it ourselves. A true car enthusiast who truly understands this car, and feels the urge to say he is looking forward to his chance to stretch the legs of the R1R on Ascari in the coming day.

2017 30

DAY 4 -5 Marbella - Ascari As we pull up to Jons house we realise we’ve been followed. Some of Jons dedicated followers have spotted the car and recognised it from the Vlogs. Jon comes down to greet us and invites the fan to join us to Ascari in the morning. An early start to the next day, we head to Ascari. Even the road that leads to Ascari already feels like a race track. The winding road in the Spanish mountains makes it hard to wait for the track to start racing. For those who are not familiar with Ascari, it is a race track located around 30 minutes from Marbella. Once you arrive you are reminded more of a luxury health spa than Spa Francorchamps. Despite being a “race” track there are no actual races held at Ascari. It is a relatively new and unique

concept. A resort for those uber rich to come for fun and to let off some stream on the track. A multitude of various sports cars and race cars are housed within the premises, ready for their owners to show up and put some track miles on them. Ascari is easily among the most beautiful tracks in the world and the Spanish mountain scenery is spectacular. It’s quickly apparent that we are not alone at the track. Full sized race day trailers fill the parking lot along with sports cars, GT3 cars and even an LMP2 car has shown up for the open day. One of the few chances during the year where non-members get to try their cars on the Ascari circuit. The track is still damp from the night before but with a full circuit of cars it doesn’t take long for it to dry up. We check the tire pressure once again and Jon sets out on the track. His first laps in the Praga go well as he takes it easy and starts to get a feel for the car as the track dries. As if the view of the track from the ground wasn’t spectacular enough we take off to

2017 31

the skies in a helicopter to get a bird’s eye view of the Praga on Ascari. The Praga looks like a hot wheels car from the helicopter as the pilot does spins and dives desperately trying to keep up with the Praga. After some morning practice in the Praga Jon decides its time to start comparing lap times. He uses his time in the Radical with slicks of 2:22 as a reference. After a few hot laps he sets a 2:21. A personal record for him. With traffic on every lap, the same road tyres with which he drove from Monaco and even more potential in the car there are certainly improvements to be made to that time. But as far as the track day cars go his time is nothing less than impressive. As Jon promised days ago, Marcus receives his belated birthday surprise in a form of laps behind the wheel of the R1R. With Jon in the passenger seat, they hit the track. Needless to say with Marcus’ lack of experience in track cars he is taking it slowly and enjoying his experience at the wheel of the R1R. Jon sums up the day at Ascari by saying the Praga is an incredible car and he can’t believe he drove the car from Monaco to Marbella, then directly on the track and set the times that he did. He gives the car a measly 9/10. Noting that it doesn’t get full points because it’s not his and it doesn’t have camo yet.

DAY 6

Marbella – Prague As we arrive to Jon’s house to pick up the car for the last time, we sit and discuss the journey and get valuable feedback from Jon. After all the main job of a test-driver is to convey to the production team how can be the car improved. He does this brilliantly and we leave with many ideas of improvements for the final product. We roll the car down the driveway and up into the trailer. The car gets a few solid revs for good measure as its way of saying goodbye. Jon says his last goodbye (for now) as we lock up the trailer. Jon will miss the car but hopefully it won’t be long before they meet again. For Jon, the experience is over. For the Praga team, on the other hand, we still have a long journey ahead back to Prague. As Marcus noted, no, we are not crazy enough to do the 2750km trip home in the R1R.

As we reach Prague, the R1R loaded in the trailer, safety car packed and ready to go, it starts to sink in. 6000km, eight days, eight sleepless nights and one experience of a lifetime. This will undoubtedly be a trip that will go down in Praga history. Just as our colleagues today share stories from the very early days of Praga over 100 years ago. Perhaps 100 years from now Praga colleagues will be sharing stories and rumours that surround the week to come.

1 R a g a r The P ENTERS d l r o w l a the virtu Text: Hannes Danielsson

Assetto Corsa, created by KUNOS Simulazioni, is a driving simulator known and loved for its accuracy in simulating a real racing experience. It was released on Steam for PC back in December 2015 and over 1.4 million copieshave been sold since. It offers a wide range of cars to drive from the newest GTs and supercars, classic road and race cars to prototype racers and now the Praga R1. It offers the chance to drive these cars on some of the best tracks in the world from Brands Hatch to Red Bull Ring and the “green hell also known as Nordschleife. Tracks are scanned using laser technology to ensure incredible accuracy. The simulator offers a meticulous attention to detail from driving mechanics to the engine sound, realistic driving feel and vehicle data directly from the manufacturers. It brings new aspects of racing, not seen in the virtual world before. Among others this includes flat spots on tyres and active aero. These important physical aspects are crucial for making the most realistic driving simulator and add to the immersive experience that is racing the Praga R1 in Assetto Corsa. Racing on some of the world most renowned circuits player gets the opportunity to see the R1 on tracks where it can be oftene seen in real life.

2017 33

2017 34

The Praga R1 was released for Assetto Corsa in August 2016 as a downloadable content in the tripleDLC package, along with the Ferrari LaFerrari FXXK and 488. In the good company the Praga R1 was a welcomed addition to the already extensive collection of open formula cars, track cars and hyper cars available in the game. Assetto Corsa allows a number of different modes to explore. This includes career mode, single and multiplayer modes. The latter being the most exciting where players can experience a virtual R1 CUP. Immediately fans started to get creative uploading videos of themselves driving the R1 in game, uploading new fan made liveries

available for download and the 3d model was even extracted from the game data and added to GTA V. Implementing the complex driving physics of the Praga R1 is no easy task and it took some time to perfect it. The work to model the car and perfect the geometry alone took around 8 weeks. This can only be started once all the necessary information has been collected and revised which also takes time. This includes 3D models for basically every part, all technical specifications, set-up, videos of hot laps and more. The guys at KUNOS Simulazio-

2017 35

ni go through huge amounts of data to ensure every aspect of the R1 is represented accurately in the simulator. Together with our factory racing driver, Aleš Jirasek, the developers at KUNOS Simulazioni worked to create multiple iterations before they had perfected the characteristics of our light weight racer. Aleš was able to test the car in game and based on his wealth of experience racing the R1 he could articulate the driving feel and give valuable feedback to the developers. Even the engineers at KUNOS Simulazioni creating the 3D models were surprised how fast the car was in the game. One engineer said “The suspensions gives me great feedback I think it

must be a fantastic car, congratulations!” and “1.8G sustained?! Wow that thing is FAST!”. Work on creating the Praga R1 began at a time when the engineers at KUNOS Simulazioni were exceptionally busy and had a long list of cars to be prepared for the game. Patience was necessary but the final product was well worth the waiting and is enjoyed by us at PRAGA Cars, those who try our simulator at car shows and of course you at home.

The PRAGA

R1R

gets cold feet Text: Hannes Danielsson Photo: Oskar Bakke

After a quick glance at the Praga R1R, many people would think that it is a pure-bred race car with serious compromises for the road. We at Praga Cars together with Jon Olsson have set out to prove this wrong. Back in December of 2016, Jon drove the car from Monaco to Marbella. An 1800km journey covered in only two days and topped off with a day at Ascari where Jon set his personal lap record. Well, why stop there? The famous Team Galag have organized The Snow Tour. A small rally consisting of close friends all sharing a passion for extraordinary cars. The rally starts in Copenhagen and would finish in Arvidsjaur where a two-day ice track driving event awaited.

2017 37

Arvidsjaur is a cool town 1500km north of Copenhagen and often sees temperatures as low as -30˚C. It has become a haven for large car manufacturers to conduct winter testing of models ranging from super sports cars to luxury SUVs. The grueling conditions of winter in Northern Sweden offer the opportunity to drive these cars to their limits and often beyond. Does this sound like the kind of place to drive a pure-bred race car? If you said yes, you may be Jon Olsson. The tour starts in Copenhagen. On the night of February 25th, the Bella Sky hotel in Copenhagen sees one of the most eccentric gatherings of cars you could possibly imagine. The Praga R1R is in good company. Joined by the Batmobile, a Mercedes AMG GT3, a classic Porsche 911, BMW M6 and a Ford Focus RS. The Praga is used to being the centre of attention whenever it shows up outside of a hotel, however, this evening it has some competition. The harsh wind and rain make it almost unbearable to snap even a single shot of the line up at night, so it will have to wait. In the morning a crowd has gathered, thankful for seeing some slightly better weather. Jon jumps into the car, not before about 100 selfies with fans. With his previous experience with the car in mind, he has decided to wear multiple layers to keep himself warm. The convoy departs and makes its way into the Öresunds tunnel. Famously the tunnel/bridge that connects Copenhagen to Malmo. As you exit the tunnel onto what you expect to be Swedish land you find yourself on a bridge that appears to spawn from the ocean. The dark clouds barely cover the tips of the bridge towers. The forecast shows better luck ahead and everyone crosses their fingers. Checks across the Swedish border go surprisingly smoothly and the cars make their way up through the south of Sweden. We hit our first fuel stop around one and a half hours into the journey. Fuelled with both petrol and coffee the crew hits the road. Not knowing exactly where we are going everyone follows the cars in front of them and eventually make it to the lunch stop in Jönköping. A huge crowd has been eagerly awaiting the arrival of The Snow Tour. Despite only a single Snapchat sent from Team Galag giving away the exact location. People swarm the car as Jon comes to a stop outside the Bada Bing Burger joint. Many enthusiastic fans stay to chat with us about the car. Time passes and realizing we’ve been too busy chatting and haven’t eaten, we get into our cars and hit the road in search for the next place to get some food. As Jon drives the slightly mundane inland Swedish highways up to Stockholm, the sun sets. Yet again a crowd is waiting in suspense for the cars to arrive. Only few hours behind the schedule the crew arrives one by one to the Berns hotel. Whereas the rest of the cars will spend the night outside the hotel the Praga has a date at Wrapzone. The signature Jon Olsson look is the notorious winter camo and a winter camo wrap for the R1R is long overdue. As the car gets a good clean in preparation for the wrap we wait for the wrapping team to arrive. Only to find out the „team“ already has. One guy, Andreas, is set to spend an all-nighter in order to finish the wrap by the morning. The car may look small but with the aerodynamics as its key design factor its surface area is equal to that of an Audi Q7. With our sceptic hats on, we watch Andreas doing his work. Only one hour in and we are starting to think he may actually put this off.

2017 38

We, as opposed to Andreas, plan to get some sleep before our next stint en route to Arvidsjaur. In the morning we head back to the Wrapzone to pickup the car. Eight hours it took to wrap the car and it looks all business. Jon is super excited as he shows up to the hotel to see the R1R in its new clothes. To his delight, a young fan greets him with gifts. Not some typical gifts, rather Red Bull and a pillow. As he puts it „a pillow in the Praga is like water to a man in the desert“. He invites the young fan to join him in the Praga. We make our first fuel stop of the day where the ride for the young fan ends, we leave to our lunch stop hoping that Jon’s new found friend has some way to get back to Stockholm. Jon’s childhood home is the destination for the day’s lunch stop. A typically Swedish home in a typically Northern Swedish town. Mora, where Jon grew up and the place that made him the skiing legend that he is today. Hosting a group of crazy people and having a Batmobile and a race car parked in your driveway is not every mother’s idea of a family luncheon, but it’s something his parents surely have come to expect. Jon slides up to the house where the local kids are awaiting his arrival. The group is treated to a stack of pizzas and a Swedish “fika” or coffee and cookies. His dad shows us around the garage where the Olsson memorabilia is kept. Ranging from his very first pair of skies to his signature pro skies. Also in the garage is his dad’s Porsche 911, given to him

by Jon, complete with a Club Sport setup. He tells us he regularly does road trips in the car even driving to Monaco to visit Jon. Jon’s father warns us for the roads ahead. The narrow, icy and moose prone roads of Northern Sweden are less than ideal for a cavalcade of cars such as these. But then again, that’s kind of the point, isn’t it? The group makes it to Östersund with a thankfully uneventful trip. Though the road doesn’t get easier from here. Yet again a crowd waits at the hotel for the cars to arrive. Jon does his usual meet and greet with the fans and disappears to his hotel room. The following day comes with a much-needed lie in for Jon as the Praga is due to get some spikes. Yes, Jon drove all the way to Östersund without spikes. Dubbed tyres in our size are not easy to come by on a late notice. However, we managed to find a guy here who might just have a set. We experiment with a few different sizes and eventually settle on a set. Despite being the smallest spikes possible for a road legal tyre they will stick to the ice better than those it was wearing before. We take the opportunity to get some spikes for the go kart also. Oh, did I forget to mention we have a go-kart with us? And not one of your runabout weekend rental karts neither. This is a Praga KZ1 top tier racing kart. A six-speed shifter, 55hp, 245km/h top speed kart. This may be the fastest and most fun of everything on the ice, but more of that to come. As morning comes, we prepare to hit the road once again. It’s clear that there is a new arrival to the group. Not a car though,

2017 39

rather a helicopter. In order to get the sickest shots on the road, a helicopter is a must have. The chopper tails the cars for an hour or so and after getting all the shots and needed fuel it falls back. The chopper and the R1R head off to do a short photo shoot. Our factory driver Tomas is instructed to drift the car around the chopper a feat that would prove challenging even to the most experienced drivers. Tomas pulls it off for the first try and allows for some amazing photos. Batman may have super human powers, but running on diesel is evidently not one of them. This super-blunder puts the tour many hours behind schedule but spirits remain high in excitement for the days to come. As night falls so does the temperature. Not a problem for most of us. For Jon however, it’s no pleasure cruise. The words „I told you so“ spring to mind as Jon reenacts his journey for us in the hotel lobby. He turned down our previous offer for electrically heated socks and now it is something he regrets. Now warmed up, he notes it was the coldest drive of his life. With outside temperatures reaching -15 and the in-car heater turned off, it’s no surprise. Despite the cold Jon praises the entire team for building a car of this build quality, reliability and performance. The next morning the crew makes the short trip to one of the many ice tracks in the area. What is normally an Audi Experience

track is now hosting a group of cars like no other. We start preparing the kart. Filling fluids, mixing oil and gas for the two-stroke engine. Jon puts on the helmet and takes a seat in the kart. We give him a push start and off he goes. Seeing the Batmobile, R1R and kart simultaneously drifting the oval is somewhat surreal. On the oval, the R1R was not so eager to get any dramatic tail-waving action. Even Fredrik Åhlin, WRC rally driver and the instructor for the day, struggled to keep the back end out without spinning. The laws of physics simply won’t allow it. The extreme lightness of the car matched with the low speed and grip of the ill-studded tyres is not a combination that works here. However, it’s a very different story on the high-speed circuit. Here downforce comes into play, and play it does. Reaching speeds up to 200km/h on the ice the R1R has finally found its place up here in the North of Sweden. One by one the cars end up beached in the snow. In fact so often that we ran out of tow rope to pull the cars out. People are forced to dig the cars out by hand and shovel. As we near the end of the day the instructor has had enough digging for one day and after releasing a Q7S from the snow shouts “no more drifting we’re going home”. So that was the end of it. A six-day excursion crossing almost the entire length of the country. Both car and driver enduring the tough winter conditions in a car made for the track and both with an epic story to tell. The Praga R1R has conquered the North, but the list of places to drive is long and the R1R saga is far from over.

PRAGA power

causing a racing revolution in South Africa PRAGA celebrates one year in South Africa after being introduced to the market in mid- 2016 by the IKart/ PRAGA SA karting team. Text by Fatima Moolla Goolam and photos by Werner Viet (track) and V (pits) South Africa has a relatively small but significant karting community who take their racing very seriously. This has been proven over the years by our drivers winning multiple world championships.

With just over 200 karters driving chassis from the OTK group, CRG and Birel among others it was very exciting to bring the PRAGA brand onto the circuit locally. Exciting yes, easy no, not easy at all, but over the past year all the effort is starting to pay off with PRAGA growing steadily in the market. The brand which actually speaks for itself has over this short space of time been received well by our drivers in all classes. Impressed by the PRAGA karts performance, reliability, quality and attention to detail, our drivers put in the time and laps to make it happen and because of this we have seen multiple podium places and a championship win in our first season.

As a team we were honoured to have Cash van Belle, PRAGA factory team manager, down in Cape Town this April to assist our young drivers at round two of the Nationals. This bold step gave the drivers a confidence boost and saw significant lap time improvements by the end of the race day. As Cash put it himself, the coastal circuit at Killarney, Cape Town is a “difficult track. We know, and this is why we needed and appreciated the time taken to come down to help and assist us. It is this personal relationship and access that we have in the PRAGA team in Italy that makes all the difference. >>

The 110 years of Praga

Praga is one of the oldest automobile manufacturers in the world. The brand was born more than one hundred and ten years ago and it has been producing cars and trucks for various purposes since the year 1907. Many vehicles gained great reputation during several domestic and international racing events and expositions – but this reputation stems mostly from brand’s numerous customers. During the years of the First Czechoslovak Republic, Praga began with production of planes, military vehicles (including several light tanks), motorcycles and agricultural machinery. Praga therefore participated in the technical and industrial growth of the first half of the 20th century. As a celebration of Praga’s 110th birthday, we prepared this in depth overview of Praga history…

Praga since 1907 Praga brand was founded almost 110 years ago and managed to manufacture a vast number of automobiles, truck and bus vehicles, motorcycles, airplanes, military and agricultural machinery and vehicles during the time of its existence. Several models were introduced in every sphere of its production, some soon earning fame and popularity which helped to gain a good reputation in the eyes of the public. Praga’s history is remarkable especially in the first half of the 20th century, the period during which the company manufactured models in every mentioned area of production, thus acquiring a respectable spot in the general history of vehicle and aircraft production.

07

1907 – 1919 The Beginning

Praga enters the field of automobile industry at the end of the first decade of the 20th century. The first serially manufactured model is Praga V Charon which is followed by models Alfa, Grand and Mignon; and precisely these three vehicles will become quickly the distinctive cars of the company. Their production is launched in the beginning of the second decade and Praga’s success is channelled mainly thought their production and popularity. The second decade is also marked by an extensive production of truck vehicles – and it is just this type of production which is continued by the company for almost 90 years. Praga trucks are demanded considerably during the WWI by the army because they are able to provide logistics and transport even under difficult war conditions. The war also postpones the production of previously mentioned automobile models which is reinstated in the early 20s.

Motorcycles and motorsport Naturally, the company’s scope of activity is not limited only to automobile production. Praga continues with production of truck and bus vehicles as well as agricultural technology. Moreover, the first official motorcycle Praga 500 BDS is put into serial production by Praga’s experienced construction engineer J. F. Koch. The bike proves to be the most popular in a sidecar variant; 500 BDS also participates successfully in several racing and expedition events. The growing success of Praga in this decade was challenged by the Great depression at the turn of 1920s and 1930s. However, we shall see that even these difficult circumstances did not diminish the position of Praga in the years to come.

1920 – 1929 Roaring twenties

During the 1920s, Praga focused mainly on automobile production – and Praga is surely remembered mostly for models manufactured during these times. The company continues to produce proven Alfa, Grand and Mignon types, making several technical and design alternations to produce vehicles tailored to current needs of the market. A new type Piccolo is introduced in 1924; this vehicle serves as a substitute for gradually growing Praga Alfa and represents more affordable vehicle which became instantly popular among wide scale of customers. We may even say that Praga Piccolo represents Praga’s most popular automobile in the pre-war market.

1930

1920s

Praga agriculture Praga began to manufacture motor ploughs in 1913 and continued with it until 1925 with the total of three models produced. Since they proved to be capable of a good fieldwork, the number of produced vehicles topped one thousand and rose even more after several factories purchased licenses for these motor ploughs.

1930s

Multifarious thirties The beginning of the 1930s is marked by the Great Depression, which impacts all the areas of industry in the Czechoslovak lands. At the same time, 1930s represent probably the most diverse period in the company’s production. Praga continues to manufacture the already existing models and develops new models Baby, Golden, Lady and Super Piccolo (an enhanced alternative of previous Praga Piccolo). First Praga motorcycle 500 BDS is followed by a new 300 BCS; with these two being the only bikes serially produced until the late 1990s when Praga Enduro is introduced to the market.

Praga continues with the production of truck and bus vehicles as well, later introducing type TOT, company’s first trolleybus. However, the biggest event is the development and production of Praga aircrafts, which began during these years. The main representative in this category is probably Praga E.114, a single-engine sport airplane, sometimes referred to as Air Baby. Another novelty in company’s portfolio is the production of light tank vehicles which foreshadows the grievous times of the WWII. Praga light tanks were in armies of Sweden, Ethiopia, Romania, Iran, Peru, Switzerland, Latvia and Czechoslovakia.

2017 49

40 1940s

Second World War The Second World War brings subordination of the factories to the German occupation forces. Praga’s experienced engineers and employees are forced to labour in German factories while new manufacturers hope that their work in Praga will prevent the Nazis from sending them abroad. Praga’s factories are producing military vehicles and machinery – mainly consisting of light tank LT mk. 38 and transport vehicles. This production is affected by several acts of sabotage by patriotic employers.

1940s

Second World War Praga still manages to produce some automobile vehicles, including models Alfa, Piccolo and Lady, along with some truck and bus vehicles. During an allied bombardment in 1945, nearly 90% of company’s production sites are severely damaged. Therefore, Praga moves to Vysočany after the war, where another ninety-seven Praga Lady vehicles are produced and mark the end of automobile production of Praga for a long time. In the years to come, Praga focuses only on production of truck and bus vehicles.

2017 50

1950s – 1980s Trucks and utility vehicles

Praga is strictly focused on the production of truck vehicles since the late 1940s. Two very popular models are manufactured: Praga V3S, an all-terrain truck and utility vehicle produced at first for military purposes, but soon becoming a frequent choice for civil purposes as well. The second model is S5T which is a road alternative to V3S. Owing to their reliability and variability, these two models are quite widespread and it is not hard to meet the V3S on Czech roads even today – partly because this model has been in production for incredible timespan of almost forty years. After further rearrangements of the car industry in 1964, Praga’s factories are commissioned to produce transmission components for a majority of Czechoslovak truck vehicles. Therefore, Praga does not return to the sphere of its own construction and production until the 1990s.

2017 51

1990s

Enduro bikes Praga manufactures a motocross and enduro motorcycle in the late 1990s. For this sole purpose, the company hires several experienced engineers of Jawa Strašnice. First prototypes are then introduced in 1997 and the production of ED 250 starts the following year. The bike was later available in a homologated option suitable for road traffic. Even though “Enduros” represent only a small chapter in the book of Praga’s history, they achieved success even outside of the Czech Republic. Let us mention at least two racing achievements: Phil Converse who came second in Motorcycle Cross Country Series in the USA with his Praga ED 250 in 1999 and Martin Lind who reached the 7th place in the world championship with his Praga ED 610 in 2000.

1990s

Truck vehicles Praga also reinstates production of truck vehicles, manufacturing several types capable of movement in difficult terrain conditions. Type UV 80 is followed by several models branded with names of cars from the beginning of the 20th century: ALFA TN and UN, GOLDEN and (later) GRAND. These vehicles are mainly used by the authorities for several purposes including road maintenance and by the fire brigade.

PRAGA ALFA premiere at Aviation Show

2017 53

On 3 and 4 June, at the Pardubice Airport, visitors to the 27th year of the Aviation Show experienced the premiere the new SM-92TE Praga Alfa multi-purpose aircraft. Both days, Praga Alfa was present on static stands among world-famous air crafts. More than twenty-five thousand visitors attended the event, and there was a large number of those who were interested in the new Praga Alfa, not only in terms of flight performances but also because the Praga brand returned to the sky after almost seven decades. Concurrently, the well-preserved historical type of Pra-

ga E-114 Air Baby was also presented on the Aviation Show. In the mid-1930s Praga Air Baby became the first Praga aircraft that expanded not only in Czechoslovakia but also in several countries of Europe and the Middle East. Although it was only a static demonstration, visitors present at a nearby home airport in Hradec Kralove were very surprised when the crew with the Praga Alfa, using the reverse propeller, conveniently pulled back from its place on the stand directly to the runway.
