The Fall Fashion Issue... The September Issue is always one of our favorites for many reasons. Fall signifies a new season, new trends and a celebration of what is to come for plus size fashion. This year we have seen many changes, some good and some not so good. One of the most exciting things to happen is the collaboration between Lane Bryant and top designers Isabel Toledo, Sophie Thealett and Lela Rose. We are seeing a return to glamour and sophistication in plus size fashion. Someone that knows a lot about fashion and glamour is our guest editor, Susan Moses. Susan has been in the industry for over twenty years and has worked with celebrities such as Queen Latifah, Wynonna Judd, Kathy Bates and Jill Scott to name a few. Her love for fashion is apparent as you view our fashion editorials with our cover model Anita Marshall and super model Katya Zharkova.

Last, but not least, PLUS Model Magazine has a new addition to the family. Our very own Beauty Editor Tara Taylor and stylist Spry Lee Scott are new parents to baby Bryce. We wish you all the best. Have a wonderful month!

#plusmodelmag

As we enter the last few month’s of the year look out for some great opportunities. We have a model search coming up, another Real Woman, Real Model feature, giveaways and much more. Keep up to date with us daily at www.plus-model-mag.com

And speaking of love‌ Australian brand City Chic is officially in the U.S.A. with a total of 5 stores to be opened in the Southern California area. If you are not familiar with the brand, we guarantee once you try them, you will be hooked. Trendy clothing with a focus on fit and quality is the best way for me to describe this brand. Check them out at www.citychiconline.com

Fashion is for everyone, whether you are young or old, plus-size or thin. Clothing is a way for us to express ourselves, and with all the exciting plus-size brands marketing to us we should be more excited than ever to show our support to those who are showing us the love.

take over is officially in full effect.

There are so many runway trends that I am excited about this season, including some of the tried and trues- plush statement furs, shearling, neutrals, ultra lux grey, and wanderlust, but I am also loving some of the unexpected fall trends that have taken over the scene- 60’s mod, head to toe knitwear, vibrant color blocking, and sheer evening dresses. My favorite part of a brand new fashion season is seeing all of the colors, patterns, textures and silhouettes of the season translated to plus size fashion.

In this month’s issue, the fashion and beauty team has brought you the inside scoop on the hottest “straight from the runway” trends with tips on how you can add them to your closet RIGHT NOW! Our Shopping & Fashion Editor, Alissa has highlighted 8 of the seasons most wearable runway trends that you will definitely be coveting for fall, and our fashion contributor, Danimezza is getting us ready for cooler weather with her picks of the chicest plus size coats to give your winter wardrobe a jumpstart!

On a beauty note, we have taken beauty inspiration straight from the fall 2014 haute couture and RTW shows and highlighted all the must-have makeup, hair and nail trends of the season, and gathered the top beauty products to help you effortlessly achieve the look for everyday wear! Last but not least, I have opened up my closet and shared with you “8 Items I Added to My Wardrobe for the Fall Transition”. Versatile and wearable in endless outfit combinations, these 10 items will have you slaying your fall ensembles!

Happy fall, happy fashion, happy shopping! I hope this issue inspires you to have fun with fashion and to “think outside the fashion box”!

Electric Lip Gloss

My makeup preference is always soft and casual and I can’t live without my lip-gloss. Avon’s Electric Lip Gloss is affordable and effective. “Flirt” which is a soft pink gloss is my favorite.

MAC Bronzing Powder

I love this powder yearround. It gives me just a touch of color and I use it daily.

KISS Everlasting French Nails

As a busy mother of two I rarely get a chance to sit in a salon and get a manicure, and as a model I need to have my nails done when I get those last minute bookings. So I usually have 2 packs in my house and one in my car. I can have a French manicure in less than 5 minutes for less than $10. Also the key is to get the “Real Short” version, which looks so natural you will never go back to tips or acrylic again.

Nivea Skin Firming Hydration Body Lotion with Q10 Plus

I always get questions on what I use on my skin and the truth is for the last 5 years all I have used is Nivea Skin Firming Hydration Body Lotion with Q10 Plus. I honestly feel my skin looks tighter and my cellulite (YES I have it too) have diminished greatly after using the lotion. I use it every morning after my shower and I rub it all over my body. Also the scent is amazing. You can really skip your perfume in the morning.

Conair You Curling Wand

This is the best thing since sliced bread. I love curls and this wand is the best curling iron I have owned. It’s not at all expensive, but it works like a pro. For anyone who has struggled with curling their own hair… trust me this was invented for us.

artistic, and sometimes just plain weird, however, we love it nonetheless. Every season I go to fashion week and when I watch the shows, I am always looking for those pieces that can translate into my everyday life. The clothes coming down the runway are often styled for dramatic effect, but when you really look closely at a designer collection, you can see how individual pieces would fit into your lifestyle.

The designer collections for the fall 2014 season really speak to the woman who aspires to be dashingly well dressed every single day. From Marc Jacobs to Oscar De La Renta, designers focused on bold prints, rich hues, and pieces with loads of embellishment. Trends such as leopard print, dark winter florals, and 60’s mod are all easy to wear and incorporate into your personal style.

Runway to reality... we have broken down some of the most wearable 2014 fall runway trends, and translated them to plus size, so you can create a perfectly fabulous fall wardrobe.

Not only can it add a little sizzle to your mood but also to those around you. I’m talking colour therapy for those dreary days. Bold yellows, soft pastels and even statement

with you wherever you go.

If you love deeper shades then feel free to rock those too. Pay attention to the cut of the coat to add drama to your silhouette, as well as mixing up different textures for a totally touchable outfit.

The fall transition can be a tricky wardrobe time. The fall trends are calling your name, but the weather is still screaming summer! I have a hard time maintaining my excitement when I see all the fresh new styles hitting my favorite stores. I want them in my hands now and I want to wear them NOW! The key to putting together successful ensembles during the summer to fall transition all comes down to one thing… versatility! If we are going to swipe our credit cards for those chic fall pieces, they should be items that not only can we wear NOW, but that will be versatile in our closets throughout the fall/winter seasons. Here are 8 chic items that I have recently purchased for my fall transition wardrobe that will easily take me from the warm winter months, into fall’s cooler weather…

Open Weave Sweater

The perfect sweater solution for the fall transition. Lightweight and breathable for warm days, with just enough coverage to keep off the chill of the night air. Open Weave Sweater by MICHAEL Michael Kors

How long have you been blogging? I launched my blog in July of 2012 and it has grown very quickly since then. I’ve already had the opportunity to collaborate with several brands and have a few upcoming projects in the works that I am really excited about! I am currently working on redesigning my site and it will be ready for re-launch in September. I love that through blogging I’m able to share my personal style, connect with great people that I may not have otherwise and inspire curvy women to experiment with fashion. As a devoted PLUS Model Magazine reader, I was THRILLED when you reached out to me for this feature. Where do you love to shop? Honestly, I shop everywhere, although I do have my favorite ‘go to’ places! As a rule, I mix a lot of high and low brands and have pieces from everywhere like Saks Fifth Avenue and Forever21 in my closet. As a part-time fit model, I’m all about great fit, fabrics and style, regardless of where I shop. Recently, I’ve been loving Eloquii, Asos, Torrid, Single Dress, TBags Los Angeles, Igigi, Bloomingdales, SimplyBe, and they just opened a City Chic store in LA! Rachel Pally is my ‘go to’ brand (ask anyone who knows

Where do you obtain your fashion inspiration? I get inspiration from everywhere but ironically, I work for a fashion trend forecastingservice(WGSN),whichpredicts the trends up to two years in advance. I am constantly getting inspiration from there in addition to bloggers of all sizes, visual merchandising displays, shopping, events and being out and about in LA.

#plusmodelmag

How would you describe your fashion aesthetic? A huge part of my fashion aesthetic is influenced by the weather in LA. It’s a mix of a boho chic vibe and contemporary style. I love to wear maxi dresses and denim. While I definitely follow and experiment with different trends, I always stay true to my personal style and wear what I feel best in!

plus-model-mag.com | sep 2014

What Fall Fashion Trends are you looking forward to wearing? I am really looking forward to wearing crop tops, luxe layers, casual maxi dresses and playing around with the sporty chic look. I’m also loving some of the shades of blue for fall and a few of the bright accent colors!

me and they will tell you I practically live in her stuff)! I also shop a lot of straight size stores like Banana Republic, GAP and BCBG because sizes tend to run larger. For shoes and accessories, I love Barefoot Tess, Zappos, Nordstrom, Banana Republic, Top Shop, Bloomingdales and Zara. Feel free to ask me for suggestions anytime!

industry are continuing to improve. Designers are creating amazing pieces for us with the same integrity and fabrication they infuse into design for missy and contemporary. Luxe leather, tweed, wool crepe, shearling, midi lengths, a-line with flounce, monochromatic dressing, and very modern silhouettes, are all fabulously available in plus! I may sound a bit over zealous, but I have been riding the plus industry rollercoaster for many years and it’s wonderful to see that profound change has come. What we have to do is support the designers and companies that are creating what we have been asking for.

It has been beyond exciting serving as the curator for this issue because I had racks of beautiful options and three amazing plus models to bring the pieces to life. Shooting “Fall In The City” with cover girl Anita Marshall was our fashionable homage to one of the most glamorous city’s in the world “New York, New York” And “Modern Mix” featuring Katya is a clash of unexpected textures, patterns and pieces. The “Global

Muse” featuring Iman is a portrait of how different cultural influences can be worn together and live harmoniously in fashion. As we were shooting I starting thinking, if only we could all live on this planet in harmony like a big afro and a beautiful Roberto Cavalli Kimono…always the dreamer.

The September issue is a glimpse of all the beautiful options that are available for you this season. I am Susan Moses, and it is and will always be my pleasure to speak to you visually. As you read the magazine and look at the visuals I implore you to remember this: “Real style is never right or wrong. It’s a matter of being yourself on purpose”- G. Bruce Boyer

Enjoy!

whose career is soaring. In an industry where you can be here and gone tomorrow, we are sure Anita will be around for many years to come. Get to know our cover model Anita‌ Maddy: When you were growing up, what did you want to be? Anita: As a child I never thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up. I enjoyed being a kid and had no desire to grow up. For some reason I was so caught up in freeze tag and mini 4-wheelers, I didn’t realize I would eventually grow up.

Maddy: At what point did you decide to try your hand at modeling? Anita: I did try once, in 2010. I tried out for a modeling show and I was told I was too large. After that, I kind of gave it a rest. Years later one of my co-workers put the bug in my ear and I promised that I would give it another shot. I sent my photos into my now agency (Dorothy Combs Models). They saw something in me because they told me they wanted to sign me to their board! Maddy: I consider you to be a natural in front of the camera; watching you on set is like watching art. Did modeling come naturally to you? What have you done to perfect your craft? Anita: Modeling is something that has to be perfected just like basketball, dancing or cooking. When I first started modeling I was good, but jobs and practice made me even better. The one thing that helped me the most was being open to constructive criticism. Maddy: Part of modeling is being humble enough to accept rejection. How did you learn to deal with this part of the business? Anita: Rejection is going to happen whether you are willing to accept it or not. I learned that rejection isn’t personal. You may not fit into someone’s sample size, they may want a blonde, or you just might not be what they had in mind for a certain project but want to use you for something else. Just know if you aren’t ‘right’ for one job, 10 others come knocking.

Maddy: You are very popular on social media… how has social media helped your career? Is there a downside to social media? Anita: With 25,000 followers on Instagram and meeting the amount of friends allowed on Facebook, social media has been a great asset to my career. I even had a few clients find out about me through social media. I have had a positive experience utilizing Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Maddy: It’s no secret that the plus size industry is still struggling with size diversity when marketing to plus size women. As a curvier model, how do you feel this has affected you? Anita: A persons size does not hinder what they can do in front of the camera, it is what they believe they can or cannot do that does. If you are comfortable with your body it translates onto film. Maddy: You are adored by many plus size women who you inspire to be happy in their own skin. How do you feel about the term “plus-size”? Anita: The term plus size is what you perceive it to be. I know what I am and a term cannot define it. There is so much more to us (women, men and children) than “plus size,” so I do not allow the term to have a negative nor positive affect me. No one should ever let a label define who they are. Maddy: What’s next for Anita? What are your ultimate goals for your career? Anita: I’m not quite sure what is next for Anita, but I know I will get out of this universe what I put into it. My ultimate goal is to reach and inspire as many people as possible. I want people to be able to identify with me and be able to say, “I see a part of me in her”.

catching up When Russian model Katya Zharkova first reached out to me years ago, neither one of us knew how our lives would intertwine and create history in the plus size industry. Nearly three years after we went viral with our feature, “Plus Size Bodies, What’s Wrong With Them Anyway?”, Katya has made it her mission to bring body positivity to the women back home and for plus size women to be socially acceptable. Maddy: After your feature in PLUS Model Magazine went viral, you have been very vocal about diversity in the industry. Can you tell us about how you feel as a size 14 plus size model and what you would love to see happen in the plus size industry?

If it is means that I’m a couple of sizes more than fashion models, then I am PLUS not minus. The only issue is that it’s still very hard to find clothing in plus sizes that are trendy in size 14+ in Russia. Katya: IT IS A BIG COMPETITION HERE. Before you decide to move, there is a lot to think about... 1) Are you ready to do everything you can to be the best version of you? 2) There are already many models here; you can’t expect that just because you moved here clients will hire you. Be ready for competition. 3) Think about how you look and make sure your image and pictures are polished. 4) Improve your skills and learn English. 5) Know that it can take months or even years for you to catch a break. It all depends on how badly you really want this. Follow Katya... @KatyaZharkova on Instagram Click to follow on Facebook

#plusmodelmag

Q. As an aspiring model I’m often asked to do

shows for free?

A. Aspiring models that are not signed usually do free local shows and television segments for the industry, you should choose opportunities based on how well they are connected in the industry. If you are doing shows and not getting anything from it then what is the point? Before deciding, find out if the plus industry is supporting the show, and if there will be press or bloggers in attendance. If the networking opportunities and exposure are worth it, then do it. Eventually you will have to decide when you go from free to paid opportunities.

Q. I recently visited a well-known modeling agency in California and I was surprised to see that the owner of the agency was also a model and currently on campaigns. Is this a normal practice, I did not leave with a good feeling... I mean, who wants to compete with the owner of the agency for jobs?

modeling side-by-side with the women they represent. There is no law that states this cannot be done, so I think it’s up to you to decide whether this is something you are personally comfortable with. If you are not, then move on and visit an agency where you will feel comfortable. Q. Can you be too tall for plus size modeling?

A. Most models are not beyond 5’11, however there are always exceptions. If you are an amazing model in front of the camera you may find that people will make an exception for you.

Q. I’ve read a lot about Fit Modeling after your last Modeling 101 feature. I believe my measurements are good for this type of modeling, but after some research I realized there are not many fit companies in Iowa. Would I be able to work as a fit model but live outside a city like NY or LA?

plus-model-mag.com | sep 2014

#plusmodelmag

A. I had to reach out to a few agencies to find out how they handle this. In summary, fit agencies may be in big cities but the jobs can be anywhere around the world. The key to being a successful fit model is to sign with a good agency and keep your measurements consistent. You can have a NYC agency and work for companies in other states and reside outside of NYC. With that being said, you will have to travel to be signed by the agency and at times you may have to travel to meet with clients... so make sure you save those frequent flier miles. NYC when I was looking into getting involved with it. The clients and work are just not there in Philly. NYC is the hub of the modeling industry and to see how far plus modeling has come in recent years is really inspiring. I found a great team to work with and they really have worked very hard to help me find success, while also truly acting in the best interest of their models. I have never come across bookers that are more passionate. I’m so thankful to Malissa, Todd and Nikki at Bicoastal Models!

Tiffany: Finish this sentence: The plus industry is...

Megan: leveling the playing field! I am so happy that women of all sizes are finally being represented in mainstream media and I am proud to be part of it. I was told so many times that I would not be able to find success outside of that 0-4 size range and I always felt stifled. Plus modeling has opened the doors for so many women that never thought they could carry out their dreams because of their size. The plus industry provides such a refreshing wake-up call; curves are sexy and beautiful.

Tiffany: Who are your some of you favorite plus designers, models, bloggers or celebrities?

Megan: My favorite designer is Carma Koma, probably because the clothes are just so edgy and rocker-chic. They have a fun, young and sexy “badass chick vibe that I LOVE. I also really like Leona Edmiston because her work appeals to the girly side in me.
