the black issue In November 2013 Naomi Campbell, Iman and Bethann Hardison created the “Diversity Coalition,” whose goal is to end runway racism and shed light on the lack of diversity in the fashion industry. Their open letter to the Council of Fashion Designers of America stated the lack of diversity on the runway with statistics, and listed the designers who were guilty of not using any or only one, model of color. The letter received media attention around the world and created conversation. Almost two years ago I sat down with a group of plus size models in NYC after a photo shoot. The conversation on my half of the table had turned from idle chitchat to the lack of ‘working’ black models in the plus size industry. The models pointed things out that I had not realized, and it made a great impression on me.
PLUS Model Magazine celebrates the industry, it’s fashion, models and the women who wear the fashions. Could there be a serious lack of diversity beyond the size issue? I polled 5 agencies in the United States who either have a ‘plus’ division or are boutique agencies, and here is what I found. Out of 313 models... 45 were Ethnic (Hispanic, African American, Indian, Asian) Of the ethnic models... Only 15 were brown skin girls Take a look at any plus size fashion website and look at the campaigns, do you see many non-white models? The models I was speaking to were not asking why THEY were not working more, but why are there far less black models working today than in the past? Over the past two years I have spoken to working mothers, entertainers, models, students and even grandmothers, all of whom recognized the fashion industry is a fantasy and is aspirational. One young woman shared her struggle with accepting her dark skin and wishing for many years that she was lighter. After a health scare due to skin lightening creams she is now on the road to living her best life and has a strong support system around her. To that young woman and the countless others who have or are struggling with embracing the color of their skin, we embrace you and encourage you to love the skin you’re in. You Are Beautiful! Once again you have put out a wonderful magazine! I always look forward to reading everything. When it comes to plus size women, I have always been under the impression that “PLUS” size started at size 14, but this is going back to 1988 when I got my first job in clothing. Anything smaller was considered “NORMAL”. Why must society, mainly clothing designers, tell us what is plus size? We are who we are. Tanya, thank goodness that’s an easy fix! You are going to want to choose colors that are richer in and deeper in tone. Stay away from colors that have a white base like pastels and those that are light and frosty. Think deep bronzes, jewel tones and rich plums.

The moment she steps out onto the runway during Full Figured Fashion Week® there is instant euphoria. Liris Crosse, “The Body” as she is affectionately called, has been a plus size model for over a decade. In this month’s issue we sit down with Liris to talk about her views as a working African American model.
Maddy: To those that do not know your story, can you tell us how you got started in the plus size modeling industry?
Liris: I went to a Model Search America convention. I got 4 call backs from Seventeen Magazine, Michelle Pommier, Elite & Zoli. They all loved me, but wanted me to lose weight. I tried to lose weight although I was a curvy 6-8. I went back for a 2nd convention & only one agency gave me a callback & that was Nova Models in Baltimore.
I was enrolled to start college at Bowie State and told my parents I wanted to move to NY to do commercial modeling. They said okay, they would give me a year to try it out. I moved on Christmas Day of that year, since we were already coming up for the holidays with my mom’s side of the family.

I met with Susan Georget and she loved me. I saw the women on the board and they looked like me and had natural bodies, but were exquisitely gorgeous. I didn’t know plus modeling existed then; I found out at that meeting. They offered me a contract that day and the rest is history. Maddy: Did you notice any differences with being a new Black model? Liris: I’ll say that starting out, I didn’t notice color as much because I was a smaller plus model and I was young. I thought that many times I didn’t get jobs because they felt I was too young. It wasn’t until years later that I noticed race playing a part. I observed it first working as a model for hip-hop videos. There was this shift in the girls they were using. They all seemed like mixed, Brazilian or Latina models. Maddy: We surveyed five agencies that have plus size model boards and out of 313 models, 45 were ethnic and 15 were visibly African American. Why do you think we do not have more African American plus size models being represented? Liris: I think we don’t have more visibly black models on boards because bookers feel like the clients aren’t using them, so why flood a board with more Black girls when they will complain about not working? Maddy: I have come to realize that the clients are the one’s holding the cards. If they ask, then the agency will provide. Liris: If the clients use them, then the bookers will have them. I feel it really starts with the designer/brands/companies and of course, the consumers being vocal about it.

Liris: When the agencies opened after the holiday, I went to one open call at Images. They said I was pretty, but needed to lose weight yet again. I said, you know what, I know Model Search America said to call them if I was ever in NY so maybe I should go get direction from them. A lady by the name of Leah McCloskey met with me, saw my photos and said I’m going to send you over to an agency that has women that look like you. She sent me to Wilhelmina; they had a 10-20 board at the time.

Maddy: That was a huge risk to take. How soon after moving to NY did you get signed?

I had an interesting experience once with someone in the plus industry. I was at a fashion show where there were mostly African American models on the runway. When I asked the person how they liked the show, they said, “Well, I was not aware this was an ETHNIC show.” I won’t say what my immediate reaction wanted to be, but I did compose myself enough to ask why she thought it was an ethnic show when many of the top plus size retailers were involved. She said to me, “Well, I meant it was mostly Black models.” How do we change this way of thinking? Liris: Well, let’s get into this, Maddy. The thing is most Black models aren’t working and will do whatever they can to get seen by major brands, even if the show is non-paying. Most of the White models are signed and their agents forbid them to even walk in those shows. Maddy: So basically we go back to the fact that if we do not have the brands and designers asking for and booking Black models, than they have to try and create their own opportunities. Maddy: Models are followed, have become role models and are admired by many women from young to old. What message does this send to the customers when they do not see visibly African American models? Liris: The message it sends is that you really aren’t important, or take what I give you and be happy. I find it interesting that brands will hold events and invite a lot of the African American bloggers and journalists, but not have one single Black model on their site or in their campaigns, yet they want them to blog about their products and get the sales from their followings. Maddy: This is a GREAT point. This also stands true with size. Bloggers will put an outfit on and sell it on their body, but companies will not put
Liris: A lot of brands are scared to use Black models because of that very same stigma you are talking about. They don’t want their brands to be labeled BLACK/URBAN/ETHNIC, so what does that imply, huh? That’s why you see a lot of Black models trying to work for indie designers who make great clothes, but let’s be realistic they don’t pay the money that major brands can pay. We want to make good money, too. LOL Maddy: In 2013, Iman, Naomi Campbell, Bethann Hardison and Diversity Coalition wrote an open letter to the CFDA about the lack of diversity on the runway. Iman went as far as to say that there were MORE Black models working in the 1970’s than in 2013.

Clearly, this is a serious issue in the fashion industry, both straight size and plus. Liris: First, I want to say that what Bethann, Naomi & Iman did was brilliant and powerful. I thank them for taking a stand for equality and diversity! I have looked up to all three women over the years. When I saw the campaign they did, it made me think about how this is also happening in the plus industry, but no one is speaking out about it! I have posted about it numerous times on my social media just to start a conversation about it and it’s like people are scared. Truth can be scary for some at times. Just like Naomi said, I don’t feel that companies are racist, but the act of what they are doing by not using Black models isn’t right. There are some AMAZING Black models out there who should be working a lot more. They call me “The Body” or the “Naomi of Plus” but there’s no major lingerie or swim brand I work for. Why is that? Maddy: We do need more ethnicity in the fashion industry. If you are selling to all of us, we should be represented! Liris: I research the clients and they don’t have anyone who looks like me (color-wise) on their sites or catalogs. My agent has sent out my card and they either don’t respond or say I don’t fit the look for the brand. The fashion industry is the only place where you can be discriminated against, but it can fall under ‘personal choice’. I must say thank GOD for brands like Ashley Stewart! I am proud to have a great working relationship with them. They are a prime example of racial diversity and size diversity. Maddy: For African American aspiring models that are reading this interview, what is your advice to them?
Liris: For the models reading this, I say, don’t give up, change is coming! Just continue to put your best foot forward and give them great material so eventually they can’t deny you. Just keep giving them your best; they will get it sooner than later. Maddy: For brands and designers reading this interview, what is your advice to them? Liris: For the brands I say, please don’t ignore the African American models or just the minority spending dollar, period! There are some amazing models out there of all races, who want to work. Maddy: Sydney’s Closet is a very well known special occasion and bridal dress company. How did working with them prepare you for other clients? Lauren: Working with Sydney’s Closet offered me hands on experience on what clients expect from models. They also offered me a lot of advice about working in the industry.
Maddy: What advice would you give to aspiring models who are serious about being agency represented and work as a plus-size model? Lauren: I always urge aspiring models to follow PLUS Model Magazine for amazing tips and pointers. If you’re truly serious about getting your hands dirty in the industry then start off with getting professional shots done. Start submitting yourself to legit and professional events, runway shows, and agencies. Without professional photos and/or experience you have no base, which is crucial. You never know who may just get back to you... I know I didn’t.

Tiffany: In addition to modeling, you’re a blogger! What is your blog about?
Kelly: Yes! My blog is www.KellyAugustine.com, and I share my personal style, fashion news, beauty & natural hair tips as well as my life in NYC. I’m also currently pursuing branding and I’ll be including that more in the blog. I’ve been blogging for almost five years now and it’s been such a gratifying experience.

Tiffany: What is one thing you would change currently in the industry?
Kelly: I think there needs to be a firm reevaluation of what “plus size” looks like and how that diversity is displayed. The industry is stuck in an uncanny catch 22 - retailers use smaller models so consumers accept that image as perfection, though in reality a lot of us have guts, rolls, and dimples. When designers try to use larger models, much like SWAK’s campaign in the January issue of PMM, consumers don’t
like it, even though she looks more like them.
