Get to Know Ashley Graham... Ashley Graham was born in 1987 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Discovered in a mall, she started modeling at the age of 12. Throughout her career, she has done everything from editorial, catalogue, runway, commercials and movies. Ashley is well known for her work as a lingerie model for the plus-size clothing store Lane Bryant. In 2010 she starred in the infamous commercial that was controversially banned from television, causing a lot of media attention. Ashley has been featured in fashion magazines such as Vogue, Glamour and Latina. In addition, she has appeared regularly in several Levi’s and Marina Rinaldi campaigns. Her list of clients include Lane Bryant, Target, Hanes, Bloomingdale’s, Evans, Nordstrom, Macy’s, Addition Elle, Anna Scholz, Liz Claiborne, Torrid, Elomi Lingerie, Old Navy and many more. An active role model, she has spoken at numerous high schools to teenage girls about body image and acceptance. In 2007, Ashley appeared in MTV’s Made Show in which she was a coach for a girl striving to be a plus size model. In recent years, she has also participated in several humanitarian missions to South Africa with The Temba Foundation. An accomplished speaker on the topic of fashion and the modeling industry, she has been invited on numerous talk shows including the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Entertainment Tonight and CBS News and interviewed on NPR about plus size modeling. She also acted in the 2010 feature film ‘Dirty Old Town’. In collaboration with Canadian brand Addition Elle, she has now developed her own lingerie line, launching in November 2013. October was a whirlwind of a month! It was National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and our annual ‘Love Your Body’ issue launched. With that, it was definitely a month full of empowering news and stories as well as fall fashion being in full swing. It was also a reminder that we should all take the best care of ourselves that we can. It all starts with loving yourself as you are, flaws and all. Change is good but loving yourself is something you have to do daily and not 5-15 pounds from now. Live healthy, be active, educate yourself and get those mammograms. Lately my foundation isn’t looking smooth on my skin. There are some dry flakey patches and as a whole it looks dull. Because of that I find myself wearing more makeup to compensate, but then THAT just looks worse! What can I do to make my skin look better AND on a budget? - Imani from Brooklyn, NY The good news is there ARE some inexpensive ways to improve your skin and the great news is you will see an immediate change! Buy a box of baking soda. Every evening massage a quartersized amount onto your dampened face for 60 seconds in a circular motion. Avoid your eye area. The baking soda naturally softens your skin while the granules gently buff off any dead skin cells, leaving your skin smooth to the touch. While you’re at the store picking up your baking soda, grab a bottle of apple cider vinegar. This is going to be your morning toner. The malic and lactic acids gently exfoliate and help to eliminate acne and rough patches while balancing your pH to give you that glow we ALL desire. My biggest pet peeve is when I can see any underwear line. Not just on your bottom, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m primarily talking about your bra line. You know, that hard line that cuts into your boob, the spillage over your cup, ill-fitted back that accentuates rolls and lines. Lingerie is the foundation to your outfit. Your lingerie has to be right in order to make your outfit look its best. I consider myself a lover of lingerie, and a woman who has come to know that it all starts with the bra. A quick look around the room makes it seem almost obvious that women have not been educated on how a proper bra should fit them. Let me lend a helping hand. The band is the most important part of a bra because it is the main structure supporting your breasts.

The band should not be able to stretch more than two inches off your back. If so, it is too big. Additionally, your straps should not be digging into your shoulders. If this is happening your band needs to be smaller. If your breasts are spilling over, simply go up a cup size. To find your cup size, subtract the band circumference from the measurement of the fullest part around your breast. The corresponding sizing chart will then give you your size. Now that you’re armed with this information, allow me to make you aware of something else. I’m excited to announce the launch of my lingerie line in collaboration with Addition Elle. They are a Canadianbased fashion plus size retailer with an extraordinary reputation in bra fit. This is a dream come true! I can’t express how amazing it is to have designed a sexy, glamorous, supportive line of lingerie and have the joy of sharing it with all of you. I have created a 14-piece collection of bras, panties and sexy chemises inspired with a vintage feel with a beautiful pallet of blush and black. Each piece was inspired by bras in my personal wardrobe that I fell in love with. I love showing women how to bring out their inner sexiness and help them realize that beauty comes from within and sexy is a state of mind.

Can you tell us about how you began your modeling career?
My modeling career began 10 years ago when I did a test shoot with a photographer in L.A. He decided to bring my pictures to Nous Model Management and they signed me right away as a straight sized model. Yep, I was a size 2. Even though I was a teenager I quickly learned how tough this industry could be. I went to lots of castings, but worked very little. In 2006 a friend of mine told me I should move to New York because it would be better for my career. With the encouragement of my family I did just that. I signed with a boutique agency in N.Y. called Images. Once again it was more of the same, lots of castings, but not enough work to sustain myself. During this time I had done a lot of soul searching, I had been suffering from an eating disorder for years and decided to get healthy. I realized I was making myself sick to be “skinny” for a career that I didn’t even really have. I was going to quit modeling all together when the same friend that told me to come to N.Y. said, “Don’t stop modeling, just do plus size!” I thought the idea was silly, but figured it wouldn’t hurt to try. And the rest is history!
What do you love most about your career?
I love that my office is a set or location that could be anywhere in the world on any day of the week. I get to travel and see so many places, that I wouldn’t have otherwise. PLUS-MODEL-MAG.COM / NOV 2013

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I am a plus size model, from a small town in Suffolk but have lived in London since I was 17. I am obsessed with the British seaside and want to become an ice cream lady when I retire. I have been a club promoter, DJ, host, vintage clothing seller, barmaid, Photographer and have taught art lessons to young children with behavioral problems and autism. My inspiration in life comes from my wonderful grandparents Sybil and Geoff. I am obsessed with baby pink houses and one day will own my own art deco seaside dream house.
I read you have a degree in photography? Can you tell us about your passion for the art and how you moved on to become a model?
I have a first-class degree in photography, although I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take one photo in my final year. I fell in love with the idea of archiving, restoring and reprinting unwanted family albums and imagery, which I found whilst sourcing vintage clothing in rag factories all over East London. I guess my love of photography is the idea of storing memories in visual form, and the thought of all these beautiful memories I found going into the rubbish dump, gave me inspiration to produce and exhibit of art work. Although modeling came to me by total pot luck (scouted in a pub whilst dancing to Diana Ross) I guess one of the reasons I enjoy doing it, is that I will have some nice photographs to show my children and grandchildren once I am older, bringing back to the idea of archiving of lives in photographic form. #PLUSMODELMAG

You exude confidence, sexiness and seem like the life of the party. How do you keep a positive body image?
Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very sweet of you, thank you. I guess my confidence comes from the wonderful people I surround myself with. Happiness is the key to everything in life.
I love following you on social media primarily because I enjoy the way you dress. Can you share your top go-to designers or brands?
I wear mostly second-hand vintage I find from different thrift shops, car boot sales and charity shops. My favourite place to buy from is Madam Popoffs Vintage Emporium in Margate, England.
With the industry under scrutiny about the size of models getting smaller and smaller, your curvy shape is very much appreciated by plus-size customers. Do you feel any pressure being one of a handful of working models beyond a size 12-14?

Not at all, I feel proud. I like my body shape, there are a few lumps and bumps, which I could smooth out, but I am real. I am not a mannequin. I don’t feel the pressure as I’ve been lucky to have been offered jobs based on me as a person rather than a size on a tape measure. We are not all a number.
What is your advice to aspiring models who are looking to take their careers to the next level?
Learn to love and believe in yourself. Don’t let people walk all over you, be nice to people and never give up.
You have been seen in numerous magazines, a new TK Maxx commercial and represented by three of the most reputable agencies; what is next for Felicity?
I want to come to America. I’d like to collaborate with a designer on a fashion project and last but not least do things which provide happiness.

PMM [modeling] This Month a Reader Asks... Should aspiring models take professional photos before visiting an agency? Here’s the thing… each agent has a particular look/looks they want each of their models to portray. If you plop the money down without any direction you may get an agent interested in you, but they will have you reshoot with the looks they feel are the best to represent you and the agency. Plus, I’ve seen some comp cards from non-professional models trying to break into the business and either every shot looks the same or they are so stylized that it looks like the model is playing dress up from someone’s closet. So in my professional opinion, it is better to save your money because to start in the modeling business takes money; it is an investment in your small business. It is the kind of business where you have to spend money before you make money. If you are an actress and have a strong headshot, you can use this for your meetings or mailings. If you don’t have a headshot, don’t go run out and get one. When I was an agent’s assistant, some girls that we signed brought in pictures that a friend had taken. They just happened to be taken with really good lighting and the girls looked fresh, simple, beautiful and above all PHOTOGENIC. What made you decide to become a plus size model? I wanted to show that curvy women can be sexy and stylish. Today so many girls think they have to be skinny and I want show them that women can be happy with her curves. I think young girls need new role models and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why I decided to become a plus size model.

What has been your experience being as an aspiring model in Germany? All the feedback I’ve received has been very positive from friends, family and the people in the industry who are around me. Sandy Dietrich, a plus size model from Germany, has been really helping and supporting me. Of course pursuing this isn´t always easy, but if you have a great team around you then you’re bound to succeed.
