Editor’s Letter

OQHA members, It is hard to believe 2018 is coming to a close. The year has come and gone very quickly. As I reflect back on the events of 2018, I am overwhelmed with how grateful I am to be a part of OQHA and the All American Quarter Horse Congress. This has been another year in which I have had the pleasure of working with so many outstanding people and organizations during the Congress and with OQHA. Working behind the scenes of all the exceptional events has been a remarkable experience which shows me that without the countless efforts by many dedicated individuals, we wouldn’t have been able to make this year such a success. Throughout the year, I have had the privilege to have involvement with the OQHA Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet, Annual Picnic, and several of the remarkable horse shows around Ohio where I continue to meet so many more wonderful faces of OQHA. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the OQHA staff and directors for their never-ending support, encouragement, and assistance throughout the year. Thank you to everyone that made 2018 such a memorable year, and I look forward to what is in store for 2019!

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

RECORD BREAKING YEAR

EMMA GORE

8

Ohio Quarter Horse News

The All American Quarter Horse Congress has a new record holder for the most awards ever won as a youth in a single year. Emma Gore, 10, of Croton, Ohio won the Youth 11 and Under All Around, Level 1 13 and Under High Point, Level 1 Youth High Point and Youth All Around with her horse My Only Good Shoes. This is Gore’s first year not showing in the Small Fry division where she won Small Fry All Around in 2016 and 2017. Gore did not think she had a chance at beating out the 15-18 year olds to win the Youth All Around. “I’m just surprised and excited that I did it,” she said.

Complete list of placings through Congress below. First Place: Youth Horsemanship 11 and Under Level 1 Youth Western Pleasure 13 and Under Youth Hunt Seat Equitation 11 and Under Second Place: Youth Showmanship 11 and Under Youth Western Pleasure 11 and Under Third Place: Level 1 Youth Showmanship 13 and Under Level 1 Youth Hunt Seat Equitation 13 and Under Fifth Place: Level 1 Youth Horsemanship 13 and Under

Gore has only been riding My Only Good Shoes in the show arena for one year and the pair are already leaving their mark. “I want to come back next year and win it all again, but I don’t know if I will be able to,” Gore said. With several more years ahead of her she has plenty of time to defend these titles and add to her collection of trophies, saddles and ribbons. “Jennifer and I are very proud of her and what she has accomplished this Congress,” said Judd Paul, Gore’s trainer. Congratulations Emma!

Candidate for President

Please describe what you do for a living. I, along with my wife Melissa, own and operate Mil Max Training Center. I am a professional horse trainer and Farrier. I am also an AQHA and NSBA judge. I also do clinics in the United States and internationally.

What is your educational background? I am a high school graduate from West Muskingum High School in Zanesville, Ohio. I went to farriers school in Oklahoma City at Oklahoma Farriers School. Please discuss your past and current involvement with OQHA. I have many years of experience with OQHA. I am currently Congress Tri-Chairman, chairman of the Executive Committee and the Awards Committee. I have been on most every committee on the board throughout my years of service. Please state your involvement in any other equine organizations or other charities, community activities or civic organizations. I am President of the Eastern Ohio Quarter Horse Association where we offer 3 horse shows a year. In the past year I have presented educational clinics at the Level 1 Championships, Canada, and New Zealand.

OQHA Nominees

Brent Maxwell

If elected to serve as President, I will continue to support the organization to my current level and then some. This position would allow me to work with the tri- chairman that orchestrate the Congress. I would be an asset to this team. As an exhibitor and judge I meet people from all over and listen to ideas or opinions that they have about the Congress. I’m very open minded and bring what other exhibitors, vendors, farriers, breeders, trainers and vet clinics have to say to the table, regardless of my opinion. That’s just who I am. I want to see the Congress remain the greatest horse show in the country and see our members continue to receive the benefits of OQHA membership.

What do you feel should be OQHA’s top three priorities in the next 2-3 years? The Congress will always be the first priority as it is our life source and provides us with the means to be a leader in the industry. As part of that priority we need to keep in mind that the horse show is what brings all the rest of it together and continually work to improve the show environment. Finally I want to keep the members’ programs going strong. I was in on the front end of our member incentive money where we give $100 certificates at the Ohio shows and have been an advocate to keep it. We also have an elite awards program and I’d like to see that continue along with the support of our Youth World and Congress teams.

If you are a current OQHA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OQHA during your most recent term. If you are not currently an OQHA officer or director, describe what you will contribute to OQHA if elected. I am fortunate enough to have been consecutively elected every term as a director. I am very involved with OQHA. Starting the year with the awards, I help coordinate the year end awards for the annual banquet. I attend the monthly meetings on a regular basis and extra meetings involving the executive committee. I help with the annual golf outing and I helped with admissions at the Congress events and also with the team tournament parade of teams.

Candidate for Director

Please describe what you do for a living. Our family owns a testing laboratory for the medical device industry. I also own B.G. Blooms, a floral design studio specializing in weddings and special events.

What is your educational background? B.A. – University of California, San Diego; J.D. – University of San Diego Please discuss your past and current involvement with OQHA. Since 2004, I have been a director with the Ohio Quarter Horse Association. In that time, I have held many offices, including First Vice President, and tri-chair in 2017. With honor, I served as a member of the executive committee for 5 years. My favorite responsibility at OQHA has been coordinating the Congress Lecture and Demonstration Series for the past 15 years. Other committees I have chaired or served on include: Scholarship/Golf Outing, Public Policy, Commercial Exhibitors, Rules, and Membership. In 2016, I made all of the victory bouquets that were awarded to every Congress Champion in honor of the 50th Anniversary of our great show. In 2018, I enjoyed a new experience at the Congress, that of a commercial exhibitor. My Flower Studio, B. G. Blooms, had a booth in Congress Hall, which allowed me to walk in the shoes of our commercial exhibitors every day, all day, for the entire show. I felt the excitement of the trade show, and experienced financial success for my first year. On the flip side, I also experienced the stress of the hours required to staff the booth for such a long show. The incredible camaraderie that is developed among vendors in your “neighborhood” of the trade show is something I was pleasantly surprised by, and truly enjoyed. It was also very impressive to experience the excellent service provided to vendors from OQHA Staff Member Lisa Martin, as well as Scotty Perone’s Expo Services Office.

For the past 15 years I have been a board member, and currently serve as the President of the Board of Education for the Otsego Local School District, the public school district near our home in rural Bowling Green, Ohio.

Also served on Commercial Exhibitors, Rules, and Animal Protection/Fire/Safety. Please discuss how you think we can increase and retain OQHA membership. Serve as many facets of the equine community that enjoy the American Quarter Horse as possible. I think we do a great job of this through our horse shows, and trail ride. We need to keep our youth program strong, as the youth are the future of our industry, while at the same time provide enrichment to our amateur exhibitors who are the backbone of every horse industry. What do you feel should be OQHA’s top three priorities in the next 2-3 years? 1. group of competitors, addressing their concerns, and helping to improve the Barrels and Poles portion of the Congress. I have also actively participated in my other committee assignments, working on selecting scholarship recipients, helping at the golf outing, selling programs at the Congress, helping choose year end awards, as well as make decisions for the annual banquet. I will continue to work hard on any and all committees to which I am assigned, as well as attending monthly OQHA meetings. I will work hard to learn from the experience around me, and contribute all that I can.

What do you feel should be OQHA’s top three priorities in the next 2-3 years? 1. OQHA has been diligently working with state government and non traditional sponsors to ensure the continued success of the Congress. While currently in a positive position, we need to continue this mindset to secure the future of the Congress and our association. 2. Continuing to expand the horizons of OQHA is vital. Examples of this are the trail ride, the Southern Belle, OQHA foundation, etc. OQHA must be open to new opportunities and keep up with technological advances, while maintaining the position of promoting the American Quarter Horse. 3. Continuing leadership into the future must be a priority. Raising up new leadership within our current ranks is important and continuing to bring in younger leaders to gain experience and ensure the future of OQHA I have an undergraduate in education from the University of Akron and a Masters degree in counseling from Akron as well. Also, for increasing and maintaining membership OQHA needs to keep expanding it’s reach to new groups. The competitive trail riding is a great example of this. I would love to see this expand to contesting in the future as well as other disciplines. The level one shows are also a great way to introduce new riders to our association.

The 2018 Mercuria NCHA World Series of Cutting helped ring in opening weekend at the Quarter Horse Congress with Don’t Stopp Believin scoring 226 points in both the Open and the Non-Pro Finals, securing him the two championship titles. The 7-yearold stallion owned and shown by Phil and Mary Rapp of Weatherford, Tex. won $21,369

from the Finals, boosting his earnings to more than $400,000. Zoe Woodland, the 2017 Bridleless Cutting Open Champion, returned for a second title but this time with no saddle or bridle on Peptos Instant Style, owned by Abby Prachar. Throughout the month, the lecture and demonstration series gave attendees 21 different opportunities to learn from experts in the equine industry without leaving the grounds. The series successfully offered topics not typically covered elsewhere in the equine show world. On Saturday, October 13, Freestyle Reiners brought the crowd to its feet as Dan James took home the NRHA Open Freestyle Reining Champion title riding Don Magnum. Over the course of the month,

Ohio NYATT Team Brings Home Division I Champion Title

Youth from state and regional Quarter Horse associations across the U.S. and Canada gathered for the largest National Youth Team Tournament in the world at the All American Quarter Horse Congress Sunday, October 21. This year’s National Youth Activity Team Tournament (NYATT) hosted more than 60 teams and offered a new division of competition. Division I is a team entered in eight to fourteen NYATT classes while Division II teams are entered in one to seven NYATT classes. This split is only for the awards ceremony so that each division competes for separate top ten division awards. Each team may consist of 1-14 riders, with no more than two members competing in each of the seven NYATT classes: Barrel Racing, Horsemanship, Hunt Seat Equitation, Hunter Under Saddle, Reining, Showmanship and Western Pleasure. To determine overall team standings, points are awarded for each individual’s efforts in every class, with first place receiving 10 points, second place nine points, and so on. In the Division I, the Ohio Quarter Horse Association NYATT team claimed top spot with 118 points, including first place wins by Ellexxah Maxwell in Showmanship, Kylee Wiseman in Western Pleasure and Olivia Tordoff in Hunter Under Saddle. Northern Ohio QHA took second with 52 total points and Southern Ohio QHA followed with third and 51 points. In the first year of Division II, the Oklahoma QHA team earned first place honors with 49 points, including a third place by Brody Galyean in Western Pleasure, while Illinois QHA took second with 43 points and Rocky Mountain QHA and North Carolina QHA tied with 21 points for third.

As we look back over the year with the Buckeye Reining Series, we are filled with a sincere appreciation for everyone and every horse that was a part of our shows. 2018 was another year of growth, stellar competition and good family friendly fun for the Buckeye Reining Series as we watched our original vision of growing the sport of reining in Ohio and east of the Mississippi become a true reality. Reining is thriving again in the state of Ohio and while we work countless hours to put the Buckeye Reining Series shows on, it is you, our sponsors, competitors and spectators that make all of this possible. We launched some new programs this year including the $30,000 Run For The Bucks and the Year-end Rookie/Green Continental Saddle give away. Purse sizes were increased and we awarded a horse trailer for the first time in the Coughlin Automotive Futurity at our August show and across all three shows in our ancillary classes. A mare division was added to the August Futurity and new divisions were also added to the Leonard Truck & Trailer No Entry Fee Derby show. In addition, we hosted the first ever Ranch Horse Futurity with $5,000 in added money during our August show. The Buckeye Reining Series offered a total of $215,950 in added money throughout the series in 2018 and awarded more than $100,000 in prizes. In addition, we added some new hospitality events throughout the season. A breakfast was offered at our May show for everyone in attendance, youth activities increased and even included a large gaming trailer for youth of all ages to enjoy during our August show. Shopping opportunities with all of our many vendors grew

this year as new businesses came to display their goods at our three events. Where we saw a desire for more, the BRS found a way to make it happen in 2018. Thank you to all of our sponsors, big and small, that make great things like this possible. Your belief and support of the Buckeye Reining Series enables us to continue to grow, think outside the box and offer new and exciting classes and programs each year. As we are planning for the 2019 season, we are excited to soon announce more new programs and activities that will debut next year. Growth was also seen in our exhibitor numbers and the distances many traveled to compete at our shows throughout 2018. This year, competitors traveled from twenty-eight states and five countries to run for a piece of the prize money and bevy of awards. AQHA class sizes grew substantially this year with 203 AQHA reining points earned and 45.5 AQHA Ranch Riding points earned throughout the season. Youth class sizes were huge and many of the top youth riders in the country and their horses could be seen showing off their talents in the show pen at the BRS. Thank you to all exhibitors, your family and friends that attended the BRS shows in 2018. Your competitive spirits, great camaraderie and love of everything BRS is what breathes life into each and every aspect of what we do. When everyone is having a good time, there is no limit to the great competition and fun that can be had by all. With that being said, we cannot wait to announce the new and exciting things we have planned for 2019. First and foremost is the awarding of all of our 2018 BRS Series Awards Winners and the excited presentation of the first ever $30,000 Run For The Bucks winners! The Awards Series Celebration will be held April 6th, 2019 during our April show. Until then, stay tuned for more news and updates to come and make plans to attend our shows in 2019; April 4-7th, May 23-26th and August 15-18th.

EOQHA would like to congratulate their 2018 NYATT Team on a great showing at the Congress. The EOQHA banquet will be held at the Virtues Golf Corse in Nashport, OH on January 12, 2019, we will be sending out more information in the near future. Just as a reminder all year end awards must be picked up by you or a representative at the banquet. EOQHA will be hosting a new show for 2019, it will be April 27-28 at the Champions Center in Springfield, OH. We will also have shows April 6-7 and September 6-8 at the Ohio Expo Center. Congratulations to all exhibitors on a great 2018 show season and good luck in 2019.

What a great year! In January of 2018 my husband Greg and I decided to make the leap of building a Horse Obstacle course, not knowing exactly what the year would bring. I am truly amazed at the turnouts that we had and it was my pleasure seeing everyone come and grow over the season. We cannot thank OQHA enough for backing us for our first season! I truly believe the 26 new (and all the old) OQHA members really enjoyed themselves with new adventure of a top of the line Mountain Trail Obstacle course. We are already looking into expanding our park for the 2019 season, be sure to check it out next year and be a part of this new addition of OQHA with mountain trail obstacle course High Points accumulating at Creek Side Horse Park. We can’t wait to see you all at the banquet in February! Congrats to all! Cynthia Bauman Creek Side Horse Park

Anneleise Ritzi

OQHA Queen Candidates

College: I am currently a junior at The University of Findlay. I compete on Findlay’s Western IHSA team and am pursuing majors in the Western Equestrian Studies program and English General Writing. If you were OQHA Queen... If I was OQHA Queen I would continue promoting qualities of inclusion and uplift the many factors of our association that makes it great such as our large youth association, the expanding OQHA Foundation and our famous show, The All American Quarter Horse Congress. Thoughts on the Congress Queen Contest... The Congress Queen Contest exemplifies the characteristics every young woman should have the opportunity to possess. The different portions of the contest such as the test, the horsemanship pattern, and the interview prepare each contestant for their Congress Queen reign. If I was the Congress Queen, I would be sure to share the passion for the Quarter Horse breed with every person I met and create lasting connections that would exemplify what OQHA strives for in our equine community. What makes you unique/sets you apart from other contestants? I started showing Quarter Horses late in my youth years and had to discover the many areas of this industry myself so I believe I will have a special insight on how to branch out and reach people outside of our current established membership.

Alexis Taylor

College: I recently graduated from Stautzenberger College in Brecksville, OH from their veterinary technology program with an Associate of Applied Science degree. Recently, I accepted a full-time position at Charles River Laboratories in Ashland, OH as a research technician. My future educational plans are to continue my science degree, which will allow me to advance to higher positions in this research company. Throughout my college career, I made the Dean’s List during each semester of my schooling, while also holding the President position of the Student Chapter of Stautzenberger’s National Veterinary Technician Association.

If you were OQHA Queen... If I was given the privilege of representing OQHA as their queen, I would like to create another fundraiser for the Equestrians with Disabilities Foundation. I feel that it is very important to be a queen with a cause, so I believe it is important to utilize my resources toward helping equestrians with disabilities. Besides fundraising efforts, I would plan to attend local open and 4-H shows to spread the knowledge of OQHA and to encourage membership. Along with local shows, I would attend events such as the All-American Youth Horse show, YEDA shows, the Ohio State Fair, all Ohio Quarter Horse and Ohio affiliate shows, and journey to the AQHYA World Show to support the talented and dedicated Ohio youth. Thoughts on the Congress Queen Contest... The Congress Queens Contest has been a tradition that young women dream about since 1968. The contest challenges the participants to be a role model by showing poise both on and off a horse, while also encouraging knowledge through the written examination. This contest is an opportunity that every young horsewoman should experience at least once. From the connections you make within the industry to the lifelong friendships you embrace, the contest challenges you to push yourself to become the individual you strive to be, making it the most empowering journey anyone will experience. What makes you unique/sets you apart from other contestants? From a small child to a young adult, I have grown up within OQHA, with my fondest memories being surrounded by fellow horsemen. With my life experience, I know how the major shows run and can answer countless questions of the industry to the best of my ability. I was raised by a family who loves Quarter Horses as much as I do; thus, spreading love and knowledge of this breed and industry to those who may not understand it is a precious task that I am willing to take part in.

Please discuss how you think we can increase and retain OQHA membership. The biggest impact we can have on our industry and increasing OQHA membership is to focus on the pipeline for youth members. We must be present where youth are – in schools – so that we can compete with other activities like Lacrosse, Dance, Soccer, Cheer, etc. We should partner with programs like YEDA and IEA to provide a pathway from trying, leasing and ultimately owning a Quarter Horse. Why can’t horse showing be a varsity team sport like soccer or basketball? What do you feel should be OAQHA’s top three priorities in the next 2-3 years? 1) Focus on pipeline to provide an entry point and path to OQHA membership and Quarter Horse ownership. 2) Leverage the strength of OQHA and talents of our leaders across state affiliates – we are one OQHA. There are opportunities to work better together to support our members. 3) Continue to invest in the Congress and other premiere shows in Ohio.

pancake breakfast at the congress and many other events. Please discuss how you think we can increase and retain OQHA membership. I think that we need to focus more on what the members of Ohio are interested in and how they see the future of OQHA and OAQHA. Although the association values tradition, I feel the industry is changing and the association needs to change with it in order to keep members and attract new ones. This could include more focus on what the Ohio shows offer as well as how the shows are run. I believe the association would benefit from having other events to attract other individuals rather than just having horse shows as the main focus.

What do you feel should be OAQHA’s top three priorities in the next 2-3 years? I feel that member retention and new members should be on the top of the list. I also feel that there should be more focus on giving back to the community as well as working with local charities to raise money. This could be within the industry, but I feel there is a great benefit to going outside the industry as well.

If you are a current OAQHA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OAQHA during your most recent term. In addition to being OAQHA’s Secretary, I was able to be involved at our Little Buckeye & Buckeye Classic horse shows. We also hosted our annual Pancake Breakfast during the Congress benefitting St. Jude’s Research Hospital and will be volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Please discuss how you think we can increase and retain OQHA membership. OQHA can host a membership drive that offers referral bonuses. It’s easier & more effective for a current member to tell someone they know about the benefits of a membership than the organization trying to market the membership program. You can also give incentives/discounts to OQHA members during the Congress. What do you feel should be OAQHA’s top three priorities in the next 2-3 years? 1. Continue to improve our horse shows while keeping the exhibitors as the top priority & focusing on quality over quantity – we want to make horse showing fun for the average exhibitor. 2. Increase involvement with the organization from Ohio’s amateur eligible members. 3. Finding more ways to get involved within our community & volunteering with charity organizations.

Heather Duer

Please discuss how you think we can increase and retain OQHA membership. Membership is waning in many different activities, not just equine ones. To retain and increase membership you must give members and exhibitors a reason to participate, a reason to care and a reason to come back. For some that will mean adding incentives, sponsors and new classes to our shows, for others it will be increasing educational and service opportunities. What do you feel should be OAQHA’s top three priorities in the next 2-3 years? OQHA should build on its strong show foundation, while growing its amateur membership base and expanding service to Ohio communities.

Please discuss how you think we can increase and retain OQHA membership. Membership in my opinion is tied to participation, love of the sport and affordability as well as age. We lose to many members once they are no longer youth as well as in the 14-18 ages. We need to focus on how to make things more competitive for more participants during their youth years as well as once they move to become adults. Can we create a lesser membership with certain benefits, I am not sure, but would love the opportunity to brainstorm new innovative ideas? How can OQHA lead the way with different classes that stress ridership not cost What do you feel should be OAQHA’s top three priorities in the next 2-3 years? 1. Grow Membership – we need to embrace the 4-H World and recruit members via established clubs. I would purpose utilizing the youth membership to host 4-H clubs during a show event and walk them through the entire show process, while the adult membership host meet and great with the parents. Providing some detail cost breakdowns, provide transparency into the sport as well as trainers, with biography details, in their town. Many people are interested in the sport, they just don’t know how to get started and what they are getting into. Maybe even hold Q&A session at larger shows for parents to learn about the benefits of OQHA. 2. Retain Membership - Come up with innovated programs to keep the membership alive and the young adults involved in the sport. They may not be able to show, but how can they participate. 3. Increase Affordability – horse showing is expensive, are their opportunities to secure some corporate sponsors for specific activities, such as stall fees, entry/show fees. I think we have untapped resources that if approached correctly might help offset some cost to allow more access to the sport.

What is your educational background? I attended Capital University where I was a four-year letterman of the varsity women’s volleyball team. the majority of OQHA approved shows. I have also helped volunteer for OAQHA at shows like the Buckeye.

What do you feel should be OAQHA’s top three priorities in the next 2-3 years? 1. Giving back to the youth. I think it is wonderful that the youth entries are free at the Little Buckeye, but we need to work harder to provide them with guidance and help with things like internships, scholarships, etc. so they may financially be able to continue to show. 2. Membership and how to create new, exciting ways to get people to join and attend shows. I understand that in order to provide opportunities, we need to increase membership and entries to enable us to have funds. 3. Increase member activity. By this I mean getting youth/ amateurs to not only join OQHA and go to the shows, but to attend meetings, talk to people at shows, be a part of committees, etc. For example, volunteered for the Buckeye this summer, and the number of amateurs willing to help with entries, run the gates, and several other tasks was amazing! The more ideas/creative input on how to help with current issues facing OQHA and the industry as a whole, the better!

We can work to increase membership by promoting shows hosted across the state, by advocating for individuals and families to be a part of the organization that can give them a voice, and the comradery of fellow horse enthusiasts What do you feel should be OAQHA’s top three priorities in the next 2-3 years? To continue to promote the Quarter Horse across all divisions of showing, owning, breeding, and raising. FOUNDATION The Ohio Quarter Horse Foundation continues to impact the youth in our great state. This year, the Congress Classroom was in its third year, with more students utilizing the resources than ever. One of the resources is tutors. The use of tutors allows students to have an excused absence from school, which makes it possible for them to participate longer at Congress. This year the Congress Classroom saw an expansion of the tutoring program to include teachers with advanced degrees. As 2019 nears, it is time to think about the Foundation’s scholarship program. The scholarship program assists approximately 20 students annually. Jillian Channel shared how thankful she was for her scholarship. “Not only has the scholarship helped support my higher education, but has also kept me involved in the Ohio Quarter Horse Association,” she said. “Take advantage of all this association has to offer. I encourage all eligible youth members to apply.” Lauren Diaz used her scholarship at Auburn University where she is in her senior year. “The endless opportunities that have been presented to me would not have been possible without the unparalleled support of the Foundation,” she said. These beloved animals draw everyone together to share the love for the quarter horse. The Foundation would be thrilled to see every eligible high school senior apply for a scholarship this year. Details on the requirements to apply for the scholarship may be found at OhioQuarterHorseFoundation.com. Application materials are due to the Ohio Quarter Horse Office no later than February 15, 2019. If you want to help support the Ohio youth, who are the future of our industry, you can make a tax-free donation at OhioQuarterHorseFoundation.com.

OQHYA Nominees

Natalie Hilty

Candidate for President

How are you currently involved with OQHYA? In 2017, I servied as the OQHYA reporter. For almost every show, I wrote up an article that included a brief summary of the show, particular successes of the show, high point winners, and so on that would be posted on the OQHA website as well as the OQHA Facebook page. I had a fellow director/officer help me with interviewing random exhibitors at that show. I attended every meeting last year and gave a brief report on my latest articles and where everyone could read them. Since 2014, I have served OQHYA as a director and this past year, reporter, and chaired several committees that have helped expand my knowledge of OQHYA. Attending every meeting and being actively involved in this association has better prepared me for the position I’m running for now. It is truly an honor to serve within OQHYA and every minute spent working with these wonderful people is always worth it. Explain your current involvement with horses: (Do you show? What classes do you show in? What’s your horses name? List any accomplishments you have in the show ring.) I show my horse, Rock On Mr Cool, aka Rocky, in the English all-around events (HUS, equitation, showmanship, halter, and sometimes horsemanship). My favorite class to show him in is always the Hunter Under Saddle. I’ve had him since January of 2017 and in that show year, he proved to be such an amazing horse for me. We ended the year winning the Novice Youth Equitation in the nation, were reserve winners in the Novice HUS nationally and had multiple top-ten national awards in the novice division, as well. We were also OQHA’s Novice Youth reserve all-around winners, OQHA’s halter horse of the year, SOQHA’s Novice Youth all-around winners, and EOQHA’s Novice Youth all-around winners with wins in individual classes among OQHA and each affiliate, as well. Last year was not one to forget! Are you involved in any other horse-related organizations? If so, please list them and state your level of involvement: I’m also involved in SOQHYA, EOQHYA, NOQHYA, and OMIQHYA. SOQHYA and NOQHYA director in previous years and I’m planning on running for a position in SOQHYA this upcoming year. Please state your involvement in any extracurricular activities and any charities or community activities: Apart from riding horses, I also play tennis for my school,

attend church, am involved in 4-H, Food and Fashion Board, student council, and as a hobby, I love photography. For my Food and Fashion Board, student council, and my upcoming induction into National Honor Society, I am involved in several community activities under those organizations that expand from canned food drives to the Books N’ and a Blanket project to 4-H fashion reviews and so much more. I love photography and playing tennis for my hobbies and hope to expand my involvement in them over time. Concerning my photography, I have been lucky enough to be asked to take pictures for GoHorseShow Magazine’s articles and re-caps during Congress and the AQHYA world show in previous years. If you are a current OQHYA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OQHYA during your most recent term. I was OQHYA’s reporter in 2017 and was a director for two years prior. I have chaired and co-chaired several committees as both a director and reporter and have wrote articles on Ohio shows as OQHYA’s reporter. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? 1)Increasing of involvement from parents. The huge workload being put on our advisor(s) to make the opportunities for our youth happen is a lot for one or two people to handle. If we, the youth, can get our parents involved in planning trips, organizing meetings, contacting AQHA concerning the World Show, planning the Congress Youth Bash, we could spread the workload and not have to put so much stress on such few people. Along with relieving the workload, this idea would also be beneficial in bringing new ideas to the table for everything listed above and more. I believe this needs to be addressed and promoted as we welcome a new advisor in the year of 2019. 2) Recruiting of new members. Although this idea is brought to our attention nearly every year, it’s time we thought of some new ideas as to promote the OQHYA and benefits of being involved. Referring to my first priority, if we can get parents involved with their new and fresh ideas, we would have more outlets like the places they work, those kids’ schools, their sporting events, etc. to promote OQHYA. 3) Expand our educational opportunities. We could bring the “Congress Classroom” to bigger shows like the Madness, the Buckeye, the AQHYA World Show, and even promote it enough for it to be apart of shows out of state. Ideas like these bring in more exhibitors not worried about missing school because they can get their work done without too much stress. I think we should continue to make opportunities like this available to our youth and in turn, possibly increase our membership and attendance at shows.

How are you currently involved with OQHYA? I have previously served as the OQHYA Vice President, and I have also been a director for 11 years. I have chaired several committees throughout my time serving OQHYA. These committees included scrapbook, rules, nominating and media. I have served on social, fundraising, and World Show stall decorations and t-shirt committees, as well.

If you are a current OQHYA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OQHYA during your most recent term. I currently serve as a director and I feel that I contribute experience, I have been a member of the association since I was 4 and attending meetings since I was 5. I’ve had the honor of watching the association grow and was able to learn the importance of having an open mind when running an association. If elected I personally promise to give my full attention to our association and make sure it continues on its growing path to success. I also promise to keep an open mind and listen to all of our members when making decisions.

I also represent the National Snaffle Bit Youth Association as their pesident as well. The past 4 years I have been involved with IEA where I ride for Autumn Rose Farm Equestrian team. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? 1-As always MEMBERSHIP! I felt the need to capitalize this to stress its importance. The need for new membership is greater every year as we have more and more youth moving out of the age division. We need to encourage new members of any age to continue to allow our association to grow. As the leaders of the association it is our personal duty to ensure the continued growth and excellence of our association for our future leaders. 2-Social/Community Service- I believe that we should work on putting together more social outings as a group while also helping the community. A social aspect is really hard to get at horse shows when were all working hard. A priority of mine is to get youth of all ages and all disciplines together to get to know each other a little more. It’s important to be more outgoing as we welcome new and old members alike. 3- Scholarships- As more youth leave us every year I think promoting more scholarship opportunities would be beneficial as not only thanking our older members but incentive for our younger members. Scholarships are an easy way to give back to our own association while also promoting it.

Explain your current involvement with horses: I nationally qualified and attended the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 Youth World Show in Reining. to have a Honors or AP diploma when I graduate. Last year, I received a very prestigious award from the Celebration of Excellence at Dublin Jerome High School. If you are a current OQHYA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OQHYA during your most recent term. I hope we can reach out to people from 4-H and The All American Youth Show to show them that we are more than just youth who show Quarter Horses. I want to represent OQHYA by explaining you do not need a horse to be a part of the association. You can join the Hippology Team, Judging Team or the Speech Contest at the World Show and Congress. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? 1. Expanding as an association by encouraging more youth to become involved in OQHYA and make our association more known to the non-horse world. The growth can also help us create more successful fundraisers and bring new ideas. 2. More members can lead to more active involvement in committees and larger turnouts at meetings. I believe introducing OQHA and OQHYA to the nation can benefit us by working together with other youth associations to make a bigger impact on nearby cities. 3. We can host large fundraisers and do more extensive community service like volunteering at local hospitals and animal shelters. These volunteering activities can help us accumulate larger sponsorships for raffles and events we can host in the future.

activities and any charities or community activities: Over the last five years, I have been very involved with Dreams On Horseback, a nonprofit organization that gives therapeutic horseback riding lessons to children and adults with special needs. I love it because it allows me to share my passion with a group of people who would not otherwise be capable of experiencing it. I am also an advocate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), which is a charity that I hold close to my heart because I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when I was three years old. If you are a current OQHYA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OQHYA during your most recent term. I have been a Director for two years, and I have contributed many ideas to OQHYA regarding various aspects of the Youth World Show, our monthly youth spotlights, and fundraising. Reaching out to new members in order to grow as much as possible, and I believe that the best way to do so is through getting them involved with the organization. 2. Fundraising improvements. We have had success in the past, but it is always good to develop new ideas for bringing money to the organization. 3. Give back to the community. We always participate in programs such as re-ride, but there are so many other ways that we could help out as well. We are fortunate enough to get to be a part of such a great organization, and there is no better way to show our love for what we do than by extending it to others.

shown the all-around. I have been invited to the Youth World show three times and have shown at the Congress four times. At the Congress I have come home so far with three finalist and two top fifteens. I have also attended the L1 Championships twice, first year receiving bronze champion, second receiving sixth place. Please state your involvement in any extracurricular activities and any charities or community activities: I give back to my county by being on the 4-H Food and Fashion Board. On the Food and Fashion Board we set up decorations and tear them down for events like 4-H fashion shows and we help out with any miscellaneous work involving our 4-H county. I am an active member in the Global Impact STEM Academy FFA program. I am currently the Sophomore Class President for my school and I encouraged our school to take a trip to the All American Quarter Horse Congress this year. I also represent our class in personal growth. I enjoyed being in Student Council in middle and elementary school and was induced in the National Junior Honors Society.

What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? I really believe that reaching out to schools is so important. I recently reached out to my school and showed my principal, FFA administrator, and some other teachers how important AQHA is and why it should be an event they look into. My school took an Ag trip to Congress and saw my other world and how special it is. They liked the trip a lot and are considering taking it next year. Reaching out to schools makes a good impression and encourages more to be members. I think OQHYA should push harder to show kids how great the Y.E.S. Conference really is. Taking Ohio to that conference shows we want to be active and involved in our association. We also should encourage a lot more kids to run for an officer position and show them the benifits.

If you are a current OQHYA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OQHYA during your most recent term. I will contribute many important qualities such as time management, organization, and enthusiasm to the organization. I have held many leadership positions through my youth career, so I have the ability to manage my time in an efficient manner all while being organized and effective. I have always promoted effective communication and team involvement. I intend to continue my eager involvement through my participation in OQHYA. I have learned through my roles to take charge, be creative, innovative, exciting and responsible. I hope to use these qualities to contribute to the Ohio Quarter Horse Youth Association. I am excited to become a part of a group that has the same burning passion for the horse breed we all have come to love. I want to surround myself with those people and bring enthusiasm with me as we all are very engaged in the functions of the American Quarter Horse Association.

What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? OQHYA Top 3 Priorities: 1. Shared education is a key commitment. Youth work can support this through providing valuable opportunities for young people to build upon their learning, to learn new skills, to develop new relationships and to develop themselves. The more opportunities children and young people have to learn and work together in a sustained and meaningful way, the more they will develop positive and inclusive attitudes towards one another 2. Increase members engagement in the association- This could be in the form of inviting members to meetings or playing a fun game at the meeting or social event where members could get to know the OQHYA officers and directors while making OQHYA feel like a welcoming experience. It could also be having officer members attend other Associations meetings. Why not invite youth that are already involved in other associations to the Ohio Association? If they are already attending another association, they may have an interest in attending the Ohio Association as well. This could broaden the youth involvement with youth that are already engaged in the industry. 3. Invest in Skills that will Endure. Our world is ever changing. But, it takes one person, one moment one change to make a difference in the world in an association. The Quarter Horse world is always changing – it is progress it is life. So, why not have the youth that are willing to take an active roll work with the parent organization to develop those skills. Have the youth treasurer work alongside the OQHA treasurer or have a media person volunteer for the youth organization to work alongside the media individual of OQHA to learn skills and to increase or bring new ideas to that area.

What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? I believe in the next 2-3 years OQHYA top priorities should be, getting more youth members involved with the activities OQHYA provides. This is because I believe that the more the youth members are involved the better our organization will be. I believe another priority should be to raise more money, because there are many members of OQHYA, and we as youths are given so many opportunities, we should make it a priority to give back to organizations that have made us who we are today. The third priority should be, focusing on community service. I strongly believe we should make this a priority because, it is always good to give back to society, and help others.

If so, please list them and state your level of involvement: I am currently not participating in any other horse related activities, but last year I participated in YEDA and was on a top placing team. My involvement with YEDA was a positive experience and I made new relationships with some amazing people. This gave me a pathway to meet new people in the Quarter Horse world as well.

Please state your involvement in any extracurricular activities and any charities or community activities: One thing I am participating in is a extensive program through my school to help me become a teacher. Through this program I spend a majority of time helping younger students in first through third grade, and I create/ teach lessons in classes. If you are a current OQHYA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OQHYA during your most recent term. If I were to become a director, my priority would be to help contribute to new ways we can get new people to join OQHYA. This would include going to different horse organizations around me and informing people about the different opportunities we have to offer. I would also work with my fellow directors and officers to come up with new ways to keep the youth connected. What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? OQHYA’s top three priorities should include more memberships, better connections with other states, and make the youth more aware of the opportunities they are offered. If we can increase the amount of membership OQHYA, then we can expand the amount of youth showing, and it would also help provide more people with interaction with the Quarter Horse. If Ohio stays in better connections with other states, we can expand the love for Quarter Horses and be able to accomplish much bigger goals. Finally, we need to make the youth aware of the opportunities they have offered to them. To use myself as an example, if I wasn’t already friends with existing members of OQHYA, I would not know about the amazing opportunities there are, or even be running for a position as director.

What do you feel should be OQHYA’s top three priorites in the next 2-3 years? 1. I believe that OQHYA should continue to work on getting more youth involved. We should bring more attention to other opportunities for youth who love the American Quarter Horse but may not be able to show, such as judging team, hippology, and speech contests. 2. I enjoy the educational portion of the OQHYA meetings and I feel we should continue this! Not only do we learn about the American Quarter Horse, but also about the real world. 3. From this past year it seems that the team was successful in fund raising and that those funds were used effectively. I believe we should do more. Our saddle fundraiser and 50/50 tickets at Congress were successful.

Are you involved in any other horse-related organizations? If so, please list them and state your level of involvement: I am a director for Southern Ohio Quarter Horse Youth Association. I was a member on the OQHA NYATT team this year at Congress. Please state your involvement in any extracurricular activities and any charities or community activities: I am a member of my high school’s varsity basketball team and I also play for a club year-round (SMAC Basketball). If you are a current OQHYA officer or director, please describe how you have contributed to OQHYA during your most recent term. I have shared ideas on our committee conference calls and I also participated in our youth fundraisers etc. I helped set up our stalls decorations at the Youth World and sold tickets at the Congress.
