Dear OQHA Members,

After a once-in-a-lifetime internship with OQHA and the Congress in 2019, I knew my “dream job” was to return to work with the organization and the largest single-breed horse show in the world. After some stepping stones over the last few years, coming to work here again has truly felt like coming home.

It’s hard to believe that only 8 months ago, I received a phone call that changed my entire life! I am still in disbelief each morning as I walk through the office doors, that I get to come to work here every day for the industry that has given me so much.

I want to thank everyone who has welcomed me and helped me immensely throughout my first Congress, especially the Board of Directors and our OQHA staff, Dr. Scott Myers, Carey, David, Rhonda, and Joanne!

I look forward to a long future with the association as we head into a new year, and I am eager to see what new and exciting things 2023 holds!

I want to wish everyone Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

Dear Ohio Quarter Horse Family,

The 2022 All American Quarter Horse Congress (AAQHC) is in the books. The Leadership and Board of Directors were determined to have an outstanding show and we certainly achieved that goal! We implemented online registration, added multiple new classes and witnessed recorded numbers in exhibitors and visitors to the Congress.

With the help and commitment from our valued Exhibitors, the OQHA Board of Directors, the Tri-Chairmen, our Leadership Team, our Affiliate Associations, the OQHA staff, and so many volunteers, we worked together to earn the title of STILL THE ONE! We all need to thank our CEO, Dr. Scott Myers for being “all-in” and pushing us all to make sure this year’s Congress was a huge success. The countless hours, phone calls and meetings seemed to never end, but your commitment to OQHA and the Congress never wavered. Scott, it has been an honor to work alongside you and your team, it is your leadership that has helped make us the success we are today.

To all of you, it has been my honor to serve as your President this year and to see our association not only address challenges, but to grow and flourish. It is everyone’s passion for our industry and the Congress that helped make 2022 a huge success. I want to personally thank the OQHA Officers, Board of Directors, the Past Presidents, Honorary Directors, OQHA staff, Dr. Myers, all of the AQHA trainers, and exhibitors for supporting me! Your commitment and passion for keeping us at the forefront of our industry is beyond compare and all of you truly are the best in the business.

I also want to thank our affiliate associations for their time and effort in providing our members with incredible horse shows throughout the year. You continue to demonstrate that Ohio remains one of the most competitive states in the AQHA show industry. Your hard work has kept Ohio horse shows well attended and the best in the country. We are looking forward to even bigger events in 2023.

As a reminder, the nominations for 2023 Officers and Directors have been finalized and you will be receiving your voting ballots electronically. Please review the list of candidates and make sure your voice is heard by submitting your vote.

I look forward to celebrating everyone’s success and achievements in 2022 at our OQHA Annual Banquet. Make sure to plan on attending one of the best state association awards banquets where more than $75,000 in awards will be given to our members. The banquet is set for February 4th at the Hilton in downtown Columbus. Watch for reservation information coming soon.

Thank you all again for your commitment and passion and for reminding the country we are #STILLTHEONE!

Best regards,

GREG TORDOFF

What Leadership Means

OQHYA Member Grant Mastin and His Leadership Journey

According to the Oxford Dictionary, leadership is defined as “the action of leading a group of people or an organization.” But what does being a leader truly mean?

In more simple terms, leadership is about taking risks and challenging the status quo. True leaders motivate others to achieve something better than before. The actions of a true leader are fueled by the desire to pursue innovation, not out of obligation. A leader will measure success by their team’s achievements and learning.

Ohio Quarter Horse Association youth member Grant Mastin strives every day to be that kind of leader in his own life.

Born and raised in Jackson, Ohio, Grant inherited his passion for the equine industry from his mother, who showed as a youth and amateur exhibitor. As soon as he could, Grant began his own riding career and has found immense success in the arena. Throughout his youth career, he has won over 25 Champion and Reserve Champion titles at the American Quarter Horse Youth Association (AQHYA) World Show, National Snaffle Bit Association (NSBA) World Show, and All American Quarter Horse Congress.

Currently, Grant is in his freshman year at Texas Christian University (TCU) in Ft. Worth, Texas, and competes on his gelding Hand Made Machine in trail and western riding.

Alongside his success in the show pen, Grant has achieved many things outside of the show circuits. He has been a member of the OQHYA Board of Directors and is currently serving as Vice President for the youth association. In 2021, he decided to become involved at the national level, serving as the AQHYA Region 4 Director and as a member of the Public Policy Committee for the 2021-22 term. This past July, at the AQHYA Youth Excellence Seminar (YES), Grant was elected to the position of AQHYA First Vice President and now serves as chairman of the Public Policy Committee.

One of Grant’s priorities for this year and his role on the AQHYA Leadership Team is to increase membership involvement and educate others on all of the wonderful opportunities AQHYA has to offer. This includes YES convention, the Young Horse Development Program, and the Youth Racing Experience, all of which provide hands-on experiences and connection opportunities for youth members across the country.

The Region 4 event saw great success, with over 50 AQHYA members attending for an evening of fun amidst the busy Congress youth weekend.

Only a few months into his term, Grant has already worked to increase involvement by providing resources and encouraging youth members to become more active within their state associations, along with AQHYA. Alongside fellow officer Sydney Sargent and Regional Directors Colton Smith and Lizzi Smith, Grant held a Region 4 TopGolf event in Columbus during the Congress to provide an opportunity for youth members competing at the Congress to socialize and connect.

When asked about the leadership opportunities through both OQHYA and AQHYA, Grant detailed the many options. At the state level, youth members can serve as directors or officers within the youth association. On the national level, youth members can first serve as Region 4 Directors, which allows youth the opportunity to serve on one of five committees: Community Service, Outreach, International, Public Policy, or Youth World Show. All committees serve different purposes, but all share a common goal of continuing to grow AQHYA. After serving as a director, youth have the option to run for an officer position and, if elected, would serve as chair of one of the committees.

AQHYA 2022-23 Leadership Team

Grant’s biggest advice to younger horsemen and horsewomen is to never stop learning.

“Regardless of where you are in life or in anything you do, you can never know too much,” he says. “Having said this, my next piece of advice is to never become complacent with where you are. There is always room for improvement, and you should always look for ways to grow. My final advice is to become active with anything you can and work to make positive changes within the world.”

Grant prides himself on living by the statement “give more than I get.” That mindset has definitely served him well in becoming the true leader he is today.

2022 CONGRESS: LARGEST EVER

55 Years Strong!

#StillTheOne

On September 27, Reining classes kick-started what would become the largest All American Quarter Horse Congress in a its 55-year history. Later that week, the Ranch classes began as well. New for this year, the 3 Year Old Ranch Riding Futurity, Open Ranch Riding Stakes, Non Pro Ranch Riding Stakes, Open Ranch Trail Stakes, and Non Pro Ranch Trail Stakes, all of which were an overwhelming success. With the addition of Level 2 Trail and Western Riding classes, entries were up and the crowds were plenty. The futurity classes this year adopted a new, one-go format that granted limited riders a spot in the finals. The stakes and futurity classes also paid out over $965 thousand, amounting to a total of $3.5 million in cash and prizes awarded at this year’s Congress.

As exhibitors checked in at the Entry Office, hundreds of commercial exhibitors filled Congress Hall, Congress Annex and Kasich Hall with boots, apparel, tack, and decor. Truck, trailer, and recreational vehicle exhibitors covered every free space on the grounds for the Trade Show opening day on September 30.

The NRHA Level 4 and 3 Open Reining Futurity finals were the first major event, being held Saturday, October 1. With over $250,000 in purse money, this event is always a crowd-favorite. The Level 4 Congress Champion was Ohio native Shawn Flarida, riding Andiamoe for Arcese Quarter Horses USA with a score of 228. Taking the Level 3 Champion and Level 4 Reserve Champion titles was also an Ohio native, Jesse Gentile and Big Chex Nic, owned by Tori K. Thomas.

Throughout the month, the demonstration series gave attendees the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the industry. With topics ranging from reining to working hunter under saddle to showmanship to barrel racing, there was something for everyone!

On Friday, October 7 the Congress hosted the Professional Bull Riding (PBR) in the Taft Coliseum. Congress PBR, presented by Western Edge, kept everyone at the edge of their seats the entire night! Justin Cornwell and Cornwell Bucking Bulls produced an awesome performance at the PBR Challenger Series. The Cornwell team provided distinguished bulls, which pulled in outstanding feedback from both spectators and exhibitors! Anticipation is high as everyone looks forward to seeing the talent for 2023.

On Saturday, October 8, the Coliseum sold out for another year of the Freestyle Reining. A must-see Congress event, the Freestyle Reining is always popular among everyone who attends the show. The Congress Champion in the open division was Ohio exhibitor Keith Ceddia and Xtra Dun Step, owned by Jerry Douglas. Their JAWSthemed performance was spectacular! Taking home Reserve Champion was Ohio native Luke Gingerich and Tinseltowns Whizard. The Congress would like to thank dac Vitamins and Minerals for sponsoring the Freestyle Reining this year. In addition, dac was a huge help with the blood drive for Brady Martin, as they pledged to match cash donations up to $10,000. Ohio Quarter Horse Association and the Congress cannot thank dac enough for their generosity and sponsorship at this year’s event.

At the 2022 Congress, Dummy Roping came back bigger than ever in the Cooper Arena. Dummy roping includes children ages 12 or younger and it is split into two divisions. For the 8 and under division we crowned Brayden Pontius as Congress Champion, followed by Damon Husband as Reserve Congress Champion. Taking home the Congress bronze for the 9-12 year old division we had Kolt McGowan, with Dawson Husband taking home reserve! Congratulations to all of these kids on a job well done!

Ohio Governor, Mike DeWine, made an appearance at the Congress with his grandchildren. He had a great time meeting with the vendors and exhibitors. Governor DeWine is thankful for the Congress, as it generates an economic impact of more than 409 million dollars for Central Ohio each year!

The 2022 All American Congress Queen was crowned during the Freestyle Reining intermission, with Kylie Good from Pennsylvania Quarter Horse Association winning the title!

Thank you to everyone for your continued support of the All American Quarter Horse Congress and to all of the Ohio members who compete and visit the event. We look forward to another great year in 2023.

2022 All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen

Kylie Good

Kylie Good is the daughter of Jeffrey and Denise Good, and was raised on a small horse farm in East Berlin, Pennsylvania. She began riding before she could walk and continues to show in western allaround events and hunter under saddle with her geldings Maximum Invitation (Max) and Back On The Market (Myles).

Kylie graduated summa cum laude from York College of Pennsylvania in May 2022 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Supply Chain Operations Management while also earning her Certified in Planning and Inventory Management (CPIM) credentials prior to graduation. She currently is employed at Wolfgang Confectioners as a Supply Chain Analyst. In this role, Kylie ensures that production has what they need when they need it amidst a challenging supply chain environment.

Kylie has been actively involved in both the Pennsylvania Quarter Horse Association (PQHA) and the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA). She served as PQHYA Vice President for three consecutive years while also serving on the AQHYA Leadership Team from 2016 to 2019. During that time, she served as a Region 5 Director (2017-2019) and was elected AQHYA First Vice President (2017-2019). She also served as the AQHYA Public Policy Chairwoman for two years, and focused on educating youth on legislative issues affecting the equine industry.

After transitioning into her amateur career, Kylie had the opportunity to become the PQHA Youth Advisor, where she has been able to share her experiences with the youth and encourage them to pursue the many opportunities available to them.

Competing for the All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen title has been an aspiration of Kylie’s since she was a young girl, and the Queen’s Competition was a highlight of every Congress she attended growing up. While the shiny crowns and beautiful outfits ignited her dream to become Congress Queen, the ability to be a voice for the equine industry, the breed, and the future of the industry is what inspires her today.

Ohio Quarter Horse News 29

Dear OQHA Family,

This past year has been nothing sort of amazing. I have been fortunate enough to have been involved with OQHA since I was just a little girl.

I served on the Youth Board for several years and now I serve on the Amateur board. I was extremely honored to represent an association that has already given so much to me. I got to travel so much representing OQHA, including the AQHYA Youth World, AQHA L1 East Championship, The Little Buckeye and many other places.

The [Congress Queen] contest itself was a great experience I will never forget. I got to room with the Michigan Queen for the contest; yes imagine that Ohio and Michigan getting along. I also got to meet the other Queen contestants, all whom were fantastic young women all equally deserving of Congress Queen.

I will never be able to replicate this experience and I want to thank all those involved and those who gave me help along the way. I hope that I made my association proud and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for us all. I sincerely thank our association for making my dreams come true.

With Love,

NEW ELECTRONIC VOTING

The Ohio Quarter Horse Association will introduce electronic balloting for the 2023 Open, Amateur, and Youth elections. Election Buddy will be used for electronic balloting, which will meet all of our needs and provide a secure format for our elections. Members can vote by email or text using their computer or mobile device. Members will receive a link, associated with their OQHA membership, via email and text. Members will be able to choose their most convenient option. The automated system will only allow members to submit one ballot.

To ensure voter security, Domain Keys and Sender Policy Framework ensure email notices reach each voter and are not marked as spam. Personal voting keys are created and used once using 256bit encryption - the same as major banks. Two factor authentication sent to their phone will be required. All voting choices are confidential and cannot be linked to the voter.

Look for your election ballot in your email inbox in early January.

CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT GEORGE SEANOR

OCCUPATION

I am currently the General Manager of The Ruhlin Company’s Industrial Division, responsible for the coordination of all construction activities, and earned my Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from The Ohio State University. Stark County has been my home for my entire life where I live with my wife Pat on a small farm that we share with our horses and pets.

Contribution to OQHA

I have been an OQHA board member for 7 years serving on many committees. Currently I am a Congress Tri-Chairman, First Vice President, chairman of the executive committee and member of the Congress Trail, OQHA finance, rules, horse show advisory and long-range planning committees. As chairman of the building committee, I oversaw the renovations to OQHA’s headquarters. I have also been the Congress Trail Coordinator for the past 18 years.

If elected I would contribute directly to the operations of OQHA, to Congress as Tri-Chairman, as well as serve on committees that I feel are important to the longrange success of OQHA: finance, rules, long range planning and horse show advisory.

Top 3 Priorities for OQHA

The 2022 Congress is behind us and its success was a result of hard work by the OQHA staff and Board of Directors. We faced unprecedented challenges this year and will continue to face challenges in 2023. Successfully navigating the challenges by the Board and Staff is critical to a successful 2023 Congress.

It is important that we continue to strengthen OQHA financially, to involve qualified directors and staff to accomplish our goals.

I work for Covia Corporation, a mining company that produces high purity silica sand for Industrial and Energy Markets. My current position is Director of Sales for Industrial Markets.

I have provided ongoing support to the OQHA as President and have served on several OQHA and Congress Committees. I have also supported the many initiatives to improve the overall health of the organization, from asset improvements to Finance Committee support. Our family supports the Congress Class Room, The OQHA Golf Outing, Friends of the Reining and the OQHA Foundation.

Top 3 Priorities for OQHA

1) Continue to impact the value of being a member of the OQHA with improved membership benefits, annual awards and continued support for our youth programs.

2) Continue to improve the All American Quarter Horse Congress experience from the prospective of the exhibitors, vendors and visitors. We need to continue to evaluate the class offerings at the Congress to stay current with the horse show trends. Evaluate the Vendor list at the Congress and pursue new vendors for improved revenue and sponsorship. Lastly, we need to make sure we are making the visitors experience the best it can be. Improvements in the live events would enhance the visit.

3) Develop a plan to add a new stall building to the Fairgrounds. Improvements need to be made at the facility and a new stall building would be a great first step to start the improvement process.

As President I intend to continue to help promote and grow our organization and the interests of the members and exhibitors. This year we are focused on giving back to our 600+ amateur members in various new ways.

Increase & Retain Membership

Membership is waning in many different activities, not just equine ones. To retain and increase membership you must give members and exhibitors a reason to participate, a reason to care and a reason to come back. For some that will mean adding incentives, sponsors, and new classes to our shows, for others it will be increasing educational and service opportunities.

As 2nd Vice President, I have been active in assisting the other leadership in continuing to improve our responsiveness to the members of OAQHA, along with exploring different ways to promote our organization and the sport in general.

Increase & Retain

Membership

We need to continue our efforts to create incentives for being a member of the OQHA. There are a number of competitors who live and compete in Ohio, without becoming members of OQHA. We should continue to explore options to bring these competitors into the OQHA family.

The first priority should be to find different ways to give back to the competitors. This will lead to the second and third priorities. Keeping the current members, while increasing the number of new competitors that choose to join OQHA.

I look to continue to bring a new outlook to our association. I am a more recent amateur and I think it is in the best interest to our association that we continue to evolve and change just as our industry does.

Membership

I always believe that we need to continue to draw new membership in. However, I think that this is a much easier task when we give back to the members that give so much to us and give them a reason to encourage new and current members to get more involved. We need to make sure our membership knows just how much impact they can have on the future of our association.

OQHA needs to continue to evolve and make changes in an ever changing industry to stay up to date on doing the best we can for our members, We also need try and be more inclusive in our vast majority of members. We have such a large member base with so little of it really involved. Finally we need to make sure that fun is always included in what we do. The majority of our members do horses as a hobby or a getaway from everyday life so we need to ensure that they enjoy their time with us and want to come back time and time again.

Top 3 Priorities for OQHYA

1. Involvement

2. Engaging and interactive youth meetings

3. Organization

OQHYA’s top priorities should be involvement, engaging and interactive youth meetings, and organization. I feel very strongly that all youth should be involved in our great organization therefore we have a strong and inclusive environment. I want the youth to look forward to our meetings. Having engaging and interactive meetings will help get a variety of people involved with new ideas. Another priority is organizing. Having organization and advanced planning will help people stay involved and informed on what is coming up. If we are organized the process will run smoothly and be enjoyable for everyone. As those are 3 priorities there are many more.

Last year I served as the 2022 President. It was an amazing experience and I was honored to represent and lead OQHYA. I learned a great deal and worked closely with our youth advisor to accomplish our goals. I also served as the reporter on the OQHYA Board in 2020.I currently show the All Around Events with my horse Whata Moonlite Ride (Bob), the Hunter Under Saddle with my horse N A Heartbeat (Val), and If it Ain’t Southern (Cam) in the Western Please and Western Riding. Top 3 Priorities for OQHYA

I believe that the Top 3 priorities for OQHYA should be: more youth involvement, getting to know all of the members, and communication.

What will you contribute?

I have been a member of OQHYA for 6 years and a Director for the last two years. I want to be your President for several reasons. First of all, I want to make sure that all of the OQHYA members feel like they are part of a group or extended family. I want us all to know and cheer for each other and understand all of the different disciplines that we all love. Secondly, I will do my best to be very organized with upcoming information and requirements. I love to be organized and have a schedule. I will be sure to communicate every event in a timely manner so that we all have time to prepare and attend. Finally, since I am just a Junior, I would be able to be your President, if you choose, for 2 years. This would help us build on our tradition, communication, and organization of OQHYA! Please vote me, Kennedy Dorsey, as your OQHYA President.

Top 3 Priorities for OQHYA

I think OQHYA’s top three priorities should be number one getting the younger kids even more engaged in meetings and horse shows. Number two, I know this isn’t in OQHYA’s control but we could contribute to the conversation, is that the Walk Trot All Arounds earn something in the year end events. Last but not least I think that OQHYA should prioritize even more communication. I understand we have Instagram and Facebook pages but sometimes things slip through the cracks and people get left out.

What will you contribute?

I believe I will contribute a younger exhibitor’s stand point on things. With me being a director last year and sitting in on meetings and understanding more and more things I think I would bring a great contribution to OQHYA by seeing the other side of things as a younger member sitting in on meetings and hearing even younger exhibitors’ problems and concerns.

The Ohio Amateur Quarter Horse Association (OAQHA) would like to extend another heartfelt thank you to those who supported our events at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress.

This year’s annual pancake breakfast benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital fed over 700 individuals! We brought back delivery service using two crickets graciously donated by Lakota of Ohio. Through meals, deliveries and generous sponsorships we were able to raise $5,500, a significant increase over last year!

Working together with the OQHA Foundation and NSBA we hosted a blood drive in honor of Brady Martin, the son of lifetime OAQHA member Kristin Martin & her husband. Donors provided 81 pints of blood, and we were able to raffle off over $24,000 in donations to blood donors. More importantly, it raised awareness for the nationwide blood shortage, importance of supporting our equine community in a time of need, and showed what an amazing support system we have not only in Ohio, but across the country.

We would like to wish good luck to OQHA members at the 2023 AQHA World Show! Please visit www. OAQHA.com to see the member spotlights representing Ohio in OKC.

OAQHA is excitedly planning for 2023, which includes our popular The Little Buckeye horse show in July at Garwood Arena, as well as some other member-focused incentives. We have some very exciting things in the works for 2023, so make sure to follow our social media for up-to-date information. We look forward to seeing you at a meeting soon.

Ohio NYATT Teams Win Big at the Congress

Each year, the world’s largest National Youth Activity Team Tournament (NYATT) is held at the All American Quarter Horse Congress and attracts teams from across the United States and Canada.

The 2022 NYATT hosted 41 teams and offered two divisions of competition. This split is only for the awards ceremony so that each division competes for separate top ten division awards.

Each team may consist of 1-14 riders, with no more than two members competing in each of the seven NYATT classes: Barrel Racing, Horsemanship, Hunt Seat Equitation, Hunter Under Saddle, Reining, Showmanship and Western Pleasure. To determine overall team standings, points are awarded for each individual’s efforts in every class, with first place receiving 10 points, second place nine points, and so on.

In the Division I, the Ohio Quarter Horse Association NYATT team claimed the second spot behind Michigan Quarter Horse Youth Association.

Ohio Michigan Indiana QHA took 6th place, Southern Ohio QHA won 8th place, and Northern Ohio QHA placed 14th.

The Eastern Ohio QHA team took home first place honors in the Division II! The team is advised by Heather Sands and consisted of Cheyenne Brand, Jocelyn Canter, Carolyn Craddock, Payton Kiphart, Piper Kiphart, Addison Leonard, and Gabriella Madison Lohrenz.
