President’s Letter

Dear OQHA Members, As I reflect on this year, there is no doubt that 2020 will be the most memorable. We started the year with one of the largest attended OQHA Awards Banquets in February. We got started into the new show year before COVID-19 hit us and would immensely change our showing schedules and lifestyles. I want to thank all of the affiliates for their creativity and dedication to move forward and still provide our members with a place to show by adapting to change, making the best of a bad situation. The extra amount of work and time that it took to move forward did not go unnoticed. Your efforts made it possible for members to compete and still obtain the number of shows needed to have awards for the 2020 show season. With that said, due to COVID the Awards Banquet had to be cancelled in the fashion that we are used to. We will now be mailing awards to all exhibitors in the form of a gift card. All-Around and Hi-Point award winners will be contacted individually. The cancellation of the All American Quarter Horse Congress was one of the hardest decisions the association had to make this year. Despite all efforts to have the Congress, everyone’s safety and the financial risks to exhibitors, vendors, staff, and the association were too great to risk having the event. I was looking back at the spike in COVID cases during the fall, and believe we made the right decision. We are now moving ahead with plans for 2021 and anticipate the Congress to be bigger and better than ever. I want to thank Dr. Scott Myers and the OQHA staff for all their time and for being able to adapt during COVID shutdowns. Your dedication to this association does not go unnoticed, and your ability to adapt to change and be efficient is commendable. As I finish up my second year as President, I would like to say what an honor it has been to lead this association. Although COVID put a damper on things, we learned that we could adapt. We incorporated zoom meetings into our meeting schedule to keep directors informed and keep moving forward through the constant changes in the environment around us. The association is healthy and ready to move into 2021. I hope the holiday season allows you to be surrounded by family and friends, ten at a time, of course! Stay safe, and see you in 2021. Best regards,

BRENT MAXWELL OQHA President

Amazing Road to Recovery

DUANE PIPER On July 27, Duane and Heidi Piper woke up to one of the most unexpected challenges they have ever faced in their 44 years of marriage. After showing at the Ohio Madness, they were on their way home when the first tragedy struck. “We witnessed our beautiful daughter-in-law being broadsided by a car running a red light as she was driving the truck pulling a six-horse trailer loaded with horses,” Heidi recalls. “The sight was horrific and scared us terribly.” After a very stressful night, they awoke to something even more unimaginable. “Duane was showing signs of a stroke. I called 911 immediately, and within minutes the squad arrived,” Heidi remembers. “It was obvious he was having a stroke.” Duane was immediately rushed to Riverside Hospital, where it was determined he had a blood clot. Because the doctors believed the stroke might have started during the night, the only option they gave them was to remove it. Heidi told us that he started to hemorrhage during the process, leading to swelling in his brain, and three days later, they had to remove a portion of his

skull to allow for swelling and reduce further complications. After Duane’s hospital stay, he was admitted to a rehab facility for three weeks of therapy. “To me, therapy simply implied he would be coming home able to take care of himself with a little help,” Heidi remembers. “Little did I know what would be needed. After six weeks, the portion of his skull removed was replaced with a synthetic piece, and then, he was ready for outpatient rehab.” Piper says the Ohio Health Rehabilitation Center in Upper Arlington, Ohio, has been crucial to his recovery. “I take him at least three times a week and often for two sessions a day. Unfortunately, his insurance does not cover all of his necessary therapy,” Heidi told us. “But thanks to many wonderful friends and organizations like NSBA, EOQHA, SOQHA, NOQHA that have stepped in to help us, I can say we are on the road to recovery.“ Heidi says there are no words adequate to express the family’s overwhelming gratitude for the outreach and support they have received from their horse-loving family. A GoFundMe was set up by a family friend that has raised over $50,000. Piper says they are always being surprised with things that aren’t covered by insurance but also pleased with what they have covered.

“Thanks to the generosity of so many, we are doing okay. We set a goal to be mobile enough to make the trip to the historic 2020 AQHA World Show as our first big outing since this happened,” Heidi said. “Duane and I wanted to be with the wonderful friends we have made and missed so much. We made it and it was awesome! This may be the best therapy ever. I call it equine therapy.” Heidi adds, “The prayers from all over our industry and beyond, along with the financial generosity, make us just want to be better and do better as we move forward.”

20 2 0 OQH A QUEEN GRACEON EHRMAN

Hi y’all! I wish I were writing to you all about all of the excitement and fun experience at the 2020 All American Quarter Horse Congress; however, that is unfortunately not the case for this year or post. I know we could all go on and on about how much we missed the Congress and all its bestowals upon us, like the friendly faces, crisp fall air, tough competition, and of course fantastic shopping. Let us not linger on what was lost and highlight some of the greatness since the last time I wrote to you. I had the opportunity to attend the AQHYA World Show in August, and I must say - it was just as fun being there to present awards and mingle with the industry’s youth as it is to be there competing! Ohio’s youth DID NOT disappoint. I wish I could count and list all of the ribbons, globes, and trophies that the Ohio youth brought home, but you would be here reading for hours if I did! While I was there, I got to hang out with the ~sweet & cool~ Ohio youth over an ice cream social that was so graciously sponsored by Buckeye Nutrition. It was such an honor to get to reward all of the hard-working kids (and parents & trainers!) and their horses with a little treat. I want to wish a Happy Holidays to all of you and your families. I can’t wait to see everyone down the road in 2021! Best, Graceon Ehrman, 2020 OQHA Queen PHOTOGRAPHER : SARA LEHMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

I have an MBA in marketing and

strategy and have held several positions in corporate strategy at three Fortune 100 companies.

Current Involvement I have been involved in all aspects of the Quarter Horse industry for over 40 years. As a youth I showed in 4-H and was a 4-time varsity letterman on my high school equestrian team - showing showmanship, reining, western riding, hunt seat equitation, trail, jumping and western horsemanship. After attending the Clark Bradley Horsemanship School in 1986 I knew I would always own, breed and show quarter horses. My goal is to continue to find innovative ways to improve and sustain our industry.

Top 3 Priorities for OQHA 1) Since horse showing is such a critical component of the quarter horse industry in Ohio, we need to focus on securing a centrally located facility where we can ensure sustainability of our shows. 2) Another way to ensure sustainability, is to focus on affordability by making our operations as efficient as possible and by making smart long-term investments. 3) I believe we need to expand our reach and increase awareness of our sport across Ohio. We need to reach out to other horse organizations and even attract non horse owners by welcoming them to experience the American Quarter Horse in a way that is low cost and low risk.

REGRETFULLY CANCELLED

32 Ohio Quarter Horse News

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2021 We remember the morning when we heard the news. The leaders of the Ohio Quarter Horse Association cancelled the All American Quarter Horse Congress. We all knew it was the right choice, but our hearts hurt. The worldwide pandemic, COVID-19, stripped 53 consecutive years of consistency, tradition, and dreams from us. OQHA sadly announced the cancellation of the 2020 Quarter Horse Congress due to strict mandates put in place by Ohio’s Governor. “Hearing all the concerns from the local and state health departments and the CDC, it was the right decision to make to keep people safe and healthy,” said Dr. Scott Myers, CEO of the Ohio Quarter Horse Association. In the face of adversity, the quarter horse industry and Congress family took the news in stride, celebrated the memories, and looked forward to the good times ahead. Dr. Myers added, “It is disappointing to all who worked tirelessly in preparation for this year’s Congress, and I want to thank you for your continued support personally. I look forward to the biggest and best Congress ever in 2021.” The horse industry persevered during a difficult season, but next year, we will no doubt be back and better than ever. In the most simple of terms, the Congress is magical. To explain it accurately, no one could do it in less than 28 days. However, Congress lovers challenged the feat. Past Congress competitors posted memories and photos on several social media platforms during the last few months, reminiscing about how they missed and look forward to the Congress in 2021.

During the days of what would have been long days, tireless nights, and priceless moments with the horses and people we love, the Equine Chronicle’s Brittany Bevis wrote, “The smell of a Sweet Shop cinnamon roll wafting down the Midway. Fall foliage fluttering down the pathway leading to the Denny Hales. Setting up of elaborate stall decorations in the Gilligan. Waking up at 3 am to snag a coveted practice spot. Discovering a myriad of treasures in the Trade Show. Laughing and joking with friends you haven’t seen in years. The anticipation as the competition draws near. An epic performance completed with perfect execution. The thrill of victory or just a personal best. These are some of our favorite memories each year at the Quarter Horse Congress. Sadly, none of us will be headed to Columbus, Ohio, this year due to the pandemic. However, the Congress WILL be back. The horses and exhibitors WILL return once more. And perhaps next year, it might mean just a little bit more. Sincere thanks to the many loyal Congress sponsors, exhibitors, and supporters. We are in this together. Our industry is strong and rest assured, the Congress be here in 2021.” She’s right. The Congress will be back. The magic will once again grace the Ohio State Fairgrounds, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, unique experience that is THE CONGRESS. The OQHA family hopes everyone who has the ambition to walk into a Congress arena is already dreaming of their next ride and a chance to walk out a Champion. Keep riding, keep dreaming, keep loving horses, and each other. We’ll see you in 2021.

CONGRESS TRAINER AWARD PROGRAM Brought you by Tribute Equine Nutrition

With the cancellation of the 2020 All American Quarter Horse Congress due to COVID-19, to say that many usual Congress attendees were looking to the month of October with disappointment was an understatement. That’s why Tribute Equine Nutrition approached the Ohio Quarter Horse Association with the desire to bring some joy back to October. Together, the partners launched the 2020 Congress Trainer Award Program brought to you by Tribute Equine Nutrition. The program presented a $1,000 award to a different trainer each day that the 2020 Congress would have run, September 29 through October 25 - to 27 different trainers in all. Congress competitors were invited to nominate their trainers by completing a brief entry

form. Clients shared how they benefited from working with their trainers, why the trainer was a worthy recipient, and shared a significant memory from a past Congress. Paul Kalmbach Jr., President of Tribute Equine Nutrition, shared, “As a partner of the Congress for many years and competitors ourselves, the Tribute team understands what this event means to all those involved. We feel very fortunate to work with the Congress team to bring some joy to the equine community and remind all of us that we are in this together. I couldn’t wait to hear all the stories about your trainers and your equine partners that make this event so special!”

D ’ON OFRI O FAMILY MARK, JENNIFER, BELLA and GRIFFIN The D’Onofrio family resides in Upper Arlington, Ohio. Mark D’Onofrio is an Orthopedic Surgeon in Lancaster, Ohio, at Ohio Orthopedic Center. Jennifer D’Onofrio is a physical therapist, though she has taken a few years off to focus on traveling with their children and allow them to pursue their passions. Jennifer has a daughter, Bella, who is 16, and a son Griffin who is 15. Both children attend Upper Arlington High School. “My husband and son are not horse crazy like Bella, and I are, but they are always supportive, financially, and emotionally. My son is also passionate about soccer and snowboarding and keeps me busy traveling with him in the winter months to freestyle snowboarding competitions around the United States. Bella also competes in alpine downhill ski racing. Both of my children play school and club soccer. We love to be busy traveling and competing constantly. A lot of

times, we divide and conquer but always seems to find a way to make it work,” Jennifer explained. Jennifer D’Onofrio chose to be a member of OQHA because she enjoys getting to know other Ohio exhibitors and trainers. “It truly feels like a large extended family. I love that we are part of the Ohio Youth World Show Team and enjoy cheering on fellow Ohio members at all the major shows. At the Youth World show, when Bella was named Reserve World Champion, she chose to have her win photo with all of the Ohio Team members she could find because they were her biggest cheerleaders and were so supportive. It is a photo and moment I will never forget,” Jennifer remarked. The proximity of the Ohio Shows allows the D’Onofrio family to be involved in multiple activities. It is not unusual for them to spend the morning at a horse show and

Getting to share this passion with Bella is invaluable to me. She showed at Congress in two different arenas at the exact same time. That was hard.

then run out to a soccer game or vice versa. “I believe that the competition in Ohio is tough, but if you can win and compete in Ohio, you can compete anywhere, including the World Show and Congress.” The D’Onofrio family chooses to show horses because they love animals, and they love competition. “We are challenged by setting goals and working on getting better or adding events. Working toward having a true connection with the horse is reflected by the perfect ride or pattern and is always the goal. Seeing a horse progress and perform at the top of its ability is very rewarding,” Jennifer said. Any horse they purchase requires that they love attention and love treats. “My favorite part of walking in the barn is hearing the nickers that greet us.” Jennifer believes that the OQHYA benefits her daughter because she has lifelong friends that she stays connected with at shows, on social media, and hopefully for a lifetime. “They have all grown up

together. They celebrate each other’s triumphs and are there to support each other during heartbreak. The support that we received after the passing of Nearly Chocolate was truly touching and showed me just how genuine and kind the Ohio horse community is,” Jennifer remarked. “I am also excited to see her become more involved as a director and officer, as she will learn skills that will help her in her career and life, including parliamentary procedure and the structure of an organization.” The D’Onofrio family’s love of horses has helped them in 2020 by giving them something to look towards in the future. “We feel blessed that summer shows were able to return and that AQHA continued with the Youth World Show. Our horses also teach us that even if shows are cancelled they are always still happy to see us, need love and care, and depend on us whether the show goes on or not! 2020 has also taught us to not take anything for granted. You never know when it was your last ride, so be grateful for every single one,” Jennifer said.

I was delivered by Dr. Drake, OQHA’s president for the first three Congress shows.” Any equestrian knows that riding horses is more than a hobby; it’s a lifestyle. Showing horses is more than the time spent in the show pen. It’s the dedication to practice, to care for your horses, and learn to love and communicate with the horse and others who share the same love. Ultimately, showing horses is a sport that keeps giving a unique kind of experience that can span a lifetime and generations. Although many of the OQHA and OQHYA events were unfortunately cancelled due to the whirlwind of 2020’s COVID-19 virus, the Dorsey family has still been able to love their horses and continue building lifelong skills and developing an even deeper appreciation for their horses. “Being able to continue to ride our horses through this crazy year has provided us all with some normalcy. We hope to make an announcement soon on the status of the banquet. OMIQHA is also in the planning and preparation stage of our 2021 show dates. As 2020 draws to a close, it is almost certain to be remembered and defined as the year of uncertainty. Beginning with the quarantine, enduring through the social unrest, and finally the electoral confusion, some things remain certain, the passion, commitment, and resilience of the reining horse community. As many of you know, news of the All-American Quarter Horse Congress being cancelled traveled quickly and left a massive void in our hearts and horse show schedules. When The Friends of Reining approached BRS with a proposal to coordinate a significant event east of the Mississippi, the excitement was, for lack of better terms, infectious! Due to Ohio’s fluid health restrictions and pandemic protocol, the decision was made to host the show in Memphis, Tennessee, at the Agricenter Showplace Arena. With unprecedented support from The Friends of Reining, Northeast Breeders Trust, Tennessee Reining Horse Association, and our generous annual sponsors, the September 30 to October 6th event was set into motion! Featuring a full slate of NRHA classes, AQHA reining and ranch riding, a derby, and of course a futurity, the event had a little bit of something for everyone! Boasting total payouts of over $420,000, The Friends of Reining Futurity Event included the country’s highest paying pre-futurity. With a guaranteed payout of $30,000 to the Level 4 Open champion and go round monies paid by the Northeast Breeders Trust, 103 open horses and riders vied for their share of the pot.

top-five finishes in each ancillary class and awarding the top ten in each division of the aged events. Special events included an open-air draw party, a youth pinata party, and a movie night. Due to COVID restrictions, hospitality golf carts delivered doughnuts and juice in the mornings, cookies and juice in the afternoons, and pizzas on Friday evening. As 2021 approaches, we want to extend a huge “THANK YOU” to all of our exhibitors, sponsors, staff, vendors, and trainers for continuing to show your support for not only our horse show but our industry as a whole. A very special Thank You to The Friends of Reining, Clark Reining Horses, Santa Hill Ranch, McGee Farms, and Leeman Farms for allowing us the honor of coordinating such an unprecedented event. None of this would have been possible without the continued help and support of our wonderful sponsors and, of course, the exhibitors! In closing, we hope that 2021 provides somewhat of a return to normalcy. We want to invite all the familiar faces and encourage any new ones to come to join us again in Springfield, Ohio, August 19-22, 2021!

The Non-Pro Futurity also saw strong participation as 61 exhibitors competed for $65,500. Exhibitors traveled from as far away as Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, and Texas. In typical BRS fashion, over $100,000 in additional prizes were awarded for the

Increase & Retain Membership Membership is waning in many different activities, not just equine ones. To retain and increase membership you must give members and exhibitors a reason to participate, a reason to care and a reason to come back. For some that will mean adding incentives, sponsors and new classes to our shows, for others it will be increasing educational and service opportunities.

Top 3 Priorities for OAQHA OAQHA should build on its strong show foundation, while growing its amateur membership base and expanding service to Ohio communities.

Current Involvement I have been showing ever since I was a little kid. For the past four years, I’ve shown Big Country Kruzer (Kruzer) in Horsemanship, Equitation, and HUS. We have had a very successful show career together, winning multiple NSBA World and Reserve World Championships, Top Five and Top Ten placings at the Youth World Show, a Congress Reserve Championship and many Congress Top Fives, Top Tens, and Top Fifteens. Most recently, we won two World Championships at the 2020 NSBA World Show. However, my family and I recently sold Kruzer to an Amateur Select competitor. When I find my new show partner, I hope to add some new events like Trail and Western Riding to my list.

Top 3 Priorities for OQHYA 1. Membership 2. Engagement 3. Education All three of these priorities correlate with each other, and I believe if we can make progress in each area, we can set ourselves up for an extremely successful year. First off, we should focus on our membership. Gaining new members is crucial for the future of OQHYA, as well as our progress as an organization. Along with gaining new members, we also need to focus on getting our current members engaged with what we are doing. The more people we have involved the more we can accomplish for our youth. I also believe getting the parents of our youth involved can bring in more helpful hands and opinions.

Another important focus for the upcoming year is education. Education of current and new members, as well as their parents, will help with the engagement of our membership. When everyone understands what is going on and is informed of upcoming events or projects, they can get involved and help out. By focusing on these three priorities, OQHYA can continue to grow and improve our organization in many different aspects. What will you contribute? As the OQHYA President, I would use my past leadership experience as an AQHYA and OQHYA officer to engage, educate, and encourage our youth and work hard for a successful year. I want to help others become more involved in OQHYA, and I plan to work closely with my fellow officers and directors to accomplish not only my own goals for this year, but theirs as well. I want to keep OQHYA as the fun and exciting organization that it has always been and continue to better it for the future. With all that has happened this past year, it has given me a new perspective and inspired to work even harder. I can’t wait to see what this year holds for the Ohio Quarter Horse Youth Association.

showed 4-H for eight years with my Appaloosa who now has several champion titles. I will remain active this year through leadership roles. Top 3 Priorities for OQHYA Current Involvement I have shown AQHA for six years with four wonderful horses. I have also received a two time reserve national title in YEDA and IEA. I

To encourage youth to seek out leadership roles, to increase membership by setting smart goals, to inform youth of our parent association, AQHA, and all of the

programs and leadership positions it has to offer.

OQHYA Nominees

CANDIDATE FOR VICE PRESIDENT :

What will you contribute? I will serve as a resource and as a public servant for our youth by being approachable and up-to-date on current events. I will assist the president in making educated decisions for Ohio’s Youth.

CANDIDATE FOR VICE PRESIDENT : GRANT MASTIN FROM : Jackson, OH SCHOOL & GRADE : Jackson High School - Junior

Current Involvement I currently show Hand Made Machine in the trail and western riding. With the guidance of excellent training programs and my family’s support, I have been tremendously blessed to earn multiple champion and reserve champion titles at the Congress, Youth World, and NSBA World. In 2019, I achieved a life long goal of AQHA High Point in Youth Trail. I am also a member of the Southern Ohio Equestrian Team, an affiliate of YEDA. Having shown since I was five, I place the highest value on the journey to these achievements —the memories made and friendships that will last a lifetime.

Top 3 Priorities for OQHYA OQHYA could focus on increasing member involvement, fundraising and community projects. By promoting an approachable and inclusive culture, we can continue to increase the level of member involvement. I want to provide more volunteer and leadership opportunities for all ages. With the challenges faced in 2020, we have a real need to start our fundraising efforts early. We must uphold our fiscal responsibility to our parent organization, OQHA. We are all blessed to do what we do, and one phrase I live by is to “give more than I get.” We can organize our efforts and ideas to make a vast combined impact for several worthy causes and service projects in our industry and communities.

What will you contribute? As VP, I will lean on my local and state organizations’ experience to excel as a leader and mentor. I will lead by being a positive example and will take pride in representing OQHYA. Valuing members’ thoughts and opinions, I will be open-minded to suggestions to encourage collaboration and create an inclusive environment. Taking on the Vice President role, I will help and support members and fellow officers with needed assistance.

World, multiple year end high points, four world champion titles at the Palomino World Show and I’m Reserve Ohio L1 All Around for 2020. Top 3 Priorities for OQHYA Current Involvement I show in the western all around events. I have a top five title at the Congress, two top tens at the NSBA

I think that OQHYA’s top three priorities in the next year should be new member outreach, making OQHA feel more welcoming and inclusive to new members, and

creating more events and activities at weekend horseshows. What will you contribute? If I’m elected to OQHYA I’ll contribute new ideas, new perspectives and lots of hard work.

CANDIDATE FOR SECRETARY : BLAISE RUNYON FROM : Hilliard, OH SCHOOL & GRADE : Hilliard Bradley High School - Junior

Another accomplishment I am immensely proud of is earning the most points in the L1 Youth HUS in Ohio. I look forward to improving at the many Ohio shows we attend throughout the year. Current Involvement I show in the all-around with my wonderful gelding, Good As Always aka Bentley. We compete in the Horsemanship, Trail, Equitation, HUS and Perf. Halter. I’ve had him since the 2018 Congress, and since then we’ve grown so much as a team in the show pen. The 2019 season in HUS we were Top Ten at NSBA World Show, and earned two Top 15’s at Congress as well. We were also finalists in the Horsemanship at Congress.

Top 3 Priorities for OQHYA OQHYA should be greatly concerned with increasing meeting attendance, and encouraging our youth to contribute during the meetings. We could also improve upon educating our members on the necessary steps they should take to be more active, such as running for officer positions, attending the Youth Excellence Seminar, and joining us at our annual awards banquet. I think

some increase in our social media activity, and getting youth engaged on the Instagram and Facebook accounts would keep everyone informed, and greatly increase the interest in attendance and membership. What will you contribute? As a director, I would love to share ideas with the other officers to help improve the organization as a whole. The opportunity to grow and build on this community would be amazing. I would contribute a passion to expand this association to even more enthusiastic youth.

FROM : Powell, OH SCHOOL & GRADE : Laurel Springs High School - Junior

Current Involvement I show in Reining, Horsemanship, and Trail. Some of my accomplishments from 2020 are being Reserve World Champion in the L3 14-18 HUS and being third in the L3 14-18 Western Horsemanship.

My priority for 2021 is to engage more youth to become members or even running for a position. Secondly, I would love to give back to others as much as possible to help OQHA, AQHA, and our community. Thirdly, I want our youth board,s connection with the open board to grow even stronger. I believe that seeing what happens behind the scenes will make our youth board even more grateful for all that they do for us!

What will you contribute? I would promise that I would contribute hardworking and a helping hand for all youth! I believe that it is extremely important to learn from everyones point of view to make our association even stronger.

CANDIDATE FOR TREASURER : ALEXIA TORDOFF

CANDIDATE FOR REPORTER : BELLA D’ONOFRIO FROM : Columbus, OH SCHOOL & GRADE : Upper Arlington High School - Sophomore

Current Involvement Yes, I love to show! I usually compete in the all-around events with my all-around horse, Nearly Chocolate (Curly), and in HUS and Perf. Geldings with N A Heartbeat (Valentino). I recently lost my all-around horse due to a severe case of colic but will continue showing N A Heartbeat. At the 2020 AQHYA World show, I was Reserve World Champion in the L3 14-18 Equation, 4th in L3 HUS, and 8th in L3 Western Riding. At the NSBA World Show, I was Reserve World Champion in the 14-18 HUS and Equitation.

Top 3 Priorities for OQHYA OQHYA’s first priority must be the health and safely of our members. Another important priority is welcoming new members into the program. This presents with unusual challenges of virtual meetings and less social interaction at shows but we should look deeper and find more opportunities to include new members. And lastly making the 2021 Congress and Youth events the best ever. With not having Congress this year we need to focus more than ever on next years to make it the best possible.

What will you contribute? If elected as Reporter, I will contribute an interactive and easy way to keep up to date through social media. There will be a fast way to get the information needed as an OQHYA member. While also keeping the social media up to date, I will put forth my enthusiasm and excitement as an involved board member for the OQHYA. I will do my part to make sure everyone has the best opportunities possible and share their skills, strengths, and accomplishments within the organization. I want all members to feel included, welcomed, and excited for the 2021 season!

Top 3 Priorities for OQHYA Current Involvement I have been showing Quarter Horses for six years, and I have shown HUS, Equitation, and Horsemanship. I am hoping to add Pleasure and Trail before I age out of my youth years. Some accomplishments are qualifying for the world show (nationally) and competing in the judging contest at the world show. I have also received second, two years in a row, in the Boots and Jeans contest. I haven’t had any recent show accomplishments because I am working with my new horse, Harvey, and this past year was our first year showing together. I hope in the future we will accomplish some of my goals for him.

72 Ohio Quarter Horse News

I think our top three priorities should be engagement, youth numbers, and community service. Engagement is number one because, during these tricky times, I feel OQHYA has become distant. We need to make our zoom calls more interesting. A way to do this is to make virtual friendly ice breakers to engage our younger youth members. The second is youth numbers. Since we are all very distant, many feel a disconnect from our association and are not participating. Reaching out to FFA and other regional groups can also help with this! The third is community service. Our tie-blanket fundraiser is just a start, and we need to do more for the Columbus area. One of my ideas is to go to soup kitchens around the central Columbus area. This way, we can help the people around us, all while educating ourselves about the world.

What will you contribute? If elected, I will contribute a tremendous amount of ideas for fundraising and engagement. As reporter, I can reach out to local organizations about how we can help them. I will also encourage our members to do the same. Many of our members have great ideas but are too nervous about sharing in front of everyone, so I want to create a safe way for them to share their thoughts. I want to make a google form connected to our website, so it is accessible to everyone. I would also research before our meetings on things that are going on in the AQHYA world to be informed on what our association is working on. This can help inspire members to branch out and think about participating on the national scale at events like the Youth Excellence Seminar!
