Editor’s Letter
OQHA members, It is hard to believe 2019 is coming to a close. The year has come and gone very quickly. As I reflect back on the events of 2019, I am overwhelmed with how grateful I am to be a part of OQHA and the All American Quarter Horse Congress. This has been another year in which I have had the pleasure of working with so many outstanding people and organizations during the Congress and with OQHA. Working behind the scenes of all the exceptional events has been a remarkable experience which shows me that without the countless efforts by many dedicated individuals, we wouldn’t have been able to make this year such a success. Throughout the year, I have had the privilege to have involvement with the OQHA Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet, Annual Picnic, and several of the remarkable horse shows around Ohio where I continue to meet so many more wonderful faces of OQHA. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the OQHA staff and directors for their never-ending support, encouragement, and assistance throughout the year. Thank you to everyone that made 2019 such a memorable year, and I look forward to what is in store for 2020!
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

President’s Letter
Dear Ohio Members, What a pleasure it has been to serve as your President this year and to see our association shine through yet another great All American Quarter Horse Congress. Congratulations to all of the many OQHA members, from Champions to finalists, that placed among the elite group of participants that exhibit their horses at the Congress. Winter has definitely made an appearance letting us know that the 2019 OQHA show season has officially ended and it’s time to sit back and reflect on our accomplishments as well as our new goals for the next season. Make sure to plan now to attend one of the best state association awards banquets across the country where more than $75,000.00 in awards will be given to our members. The banquet is set for February 1st at the Hilton in downtown Columbus. Watch for the reservation form coming soon. I would like to personally thank all of our affiliate associations for all of their time and dedication in providing our members with some of the best horse shows across the nation. Our collective efforts as a group is what has kept the Ohio horse shows strong and well attended. Be sure to look for the 2020 show calendar as there are some changes for next year due to how the calendar dates fall. Also the nominations are in and you will be receiving your ballots in the mail for the 2020 officers and directors. Look for the candidates’ biographies in the winter issue and be sure to make your voice heard by casting your votes. Thank you so much to the 2019 board for your time and thoughtful insight that helps keep this organization moving forward and a leader in the industry. I encourage all members to reach out to any board member to answer any questions you may have or any ideas that you may want brought to the board for discussion. I also want to thank the entire OQHA staff for their assistance throughout the year to both myself and to all our membership. Your continued dedication to this association and its members goes above and beyond. I hope this holiday season will find you all surrounded by friends and family and may God bless you with your travels wherever they may take you. Best regards,
BRENT MAXWELL OQHA President

OHIO NATIVE ZIPS BOSSY CHIP MAKES HISTORY
ZIPS BOSSY CHIP Ohio is the home of champions and legends. One such legend is Zips Bossy Chip. Annie B, known as Queen B, is a 2008 bay mare by UK Mito Boss and out of a Jessies Fancy Chip daughter, Suzies Fancy Chip. After shattering the record for most youth exhibitor points with owner/rider Ellexxah Maxwell in 2017, Annie B has now broken another record when she accrued 6,039.5 points in June of 2019. Annie is the definition of Ohio-born and raised. Bred and raised by the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio, Annie was part of a university training program where two year olds are placed with equestrian studies students to be started under saddle. After working with a few different students, Annie was sold to Beckey Schooler. That following September the Maxwells purchased Annie and the pair have been a team ever since, training at Mil-Max Training Center under the guidance of Brent and Melissa Maxwell. When asked about the first time she met Annie, Ellexxah said that meeting the mare wasn’t any different than meeting any other horse. After working together for a few shows, she decided to compete with Annie in the Hunt Seat Equitation, something the horse had never tried before. Even though Annie had never seen cones or judges in the middle of the arena, Annie and Ellexxah won on both judges’ cards, despite the pattern consisting of both a hand gallop and a forehand turn, which Annie had never been asked to do before.

Annie accidentally snapped her bridle, dropping her bit, and spooking herself into a run around the warm up pen. “She promptly took off running around the makeup pen for a lap before turning at full speed and headed toward an unguarded gate that lead to a concrete aisle way. If you ask my dad he’ll say he thought I was going to die if I hit that concrete. The last second she turned and headed for the wall of the arena, she kind of rocked back on her hocks and I seriously thought she was going to jump it. Somewhere I just thought to say “Whoa” for like the 30th time and she stopped dead. I still had my hat and water bottle,” Ellexxah remembered. After borrowing a bridle from a fellow horseman, Annie and Ellexxah won the semifinals and then placed 5th in the finals of the class. “Later in the month we saw one of the judges who actually was

I
I currently manage our farm In the summer I work part
time in integrated pest management for OSU as a crop inspector.
Top 3 Priorities for OQHA Current Involvement My husband and I own a small farm and board a few horses along with growing hay. Most weekends I participate in barrel racing and pole bending events. I am also a founding member of the National Pole Bending Association and hold a national board position as their secretary and treasurer. I also produce local barrel racing events and am involved with the National Barrel Horse Association Ohio 02.
Increase & Retain Membership I currently am the contesting committee chair, and also participate on the nominating committee as well as the grievance and membership committees. For the Congress, I work to make certain that the speed events run smoothly, I moderate the youth speech and demonstration contests as well as being in charge of the morning refreshment schedule. I also serve on the lectures and demonstrations committee. I look forward each year to improving the areas in which I serve and am always happy to help in any way that I can.
The Ohio Quarter Horse Association faces unique challenges moving forward. One of which is to maintain the Congress as the premier horse show in the nation. This takes continued focus and dedication, as well as countless hours of work and planning, along with the integration of new ideas and innovations. The second is to keep our association moving forward, while mentoring new directors, thus enabling a smooth transition over the next decade. Thirdly, financial prudence must continue to be at the forefront of decisions. While we are financially stable, we cannot take it for granted. Making decisions that ensure our financial future are important. OQHA has been a model of success for many years, and can continue this path with a team of dedicated leaders.

Current Involvement Susan my wife and I own Taylormade farms located in Grafton Ohio. We raise and train our own Quarter Horses and compete locally and at the larger regional and national shows. their sanctioned shows. I try to encourage people to come and show at our shows and assure them they will enjoy it. If I see someone at a show I don’t know I try to introduce myself and welcome them. If I’m fortunate to be elected I want to be a person members can come to and ask questions, share their thoughts on the good and the things that need to be improved. I will do my best to get their thoughts and concerns presented to the board.
Top 3 Priorities for OQHA I feel protecting the integrity of our organization and it’s members is a must. We have great leadership and must continue to look ahead for opportunities that enrich the showing experience and make it affordable for all. The Equine business is an ever changing landscape and we need to remember that where people go to show is a choice and we should always strive to set a standard that people look up to and feel they will be treated fairly and with respect. I believe OQHA has a responsibility to provide the very services to its members and the other Equine organizations it connects to. The available locations for holding shows and rising costs are a major concern for both the organization holding the show and the exhibitors attending. I believe we need to look at opportunities that could address these concerns to protect the future of our organization and it’s members.

Ohio Quarter Horse News
2019 CHAPTER HAS BEEN WRITTEN The 2019 chapter has been written for the 53rd All American Quarter Horse Congress.
Reining and Cutting exhibitors kicked off the nearly month-long event on October 1 bright and early. As exhibitors checked in at the Entry Office, hundreds of commercial exhibitors filled Congress Hall, Congress Hall Annex and Kasich Hall with boots, apparel, training gear, tack, and gifts while truck and trailer exhibitors covered every free space on the grounds for the Trade Show opening day on October 4. The NRHA Level 3 and 4 Open Reining Futurity finals were the first headline event at the Quarter Horse Congress, with over $192,000 in purse money. The Level 4 Congress Champion was Franco Bertolani, riding Hollys Hijacker for Quarter Dream SRL, with a score of 226.5. Taking the Level 3 Champion title was Dean Brown and SHR Sweet Sugar Joe, owned by Robert Santagata. The pair also were Level 4 Reserve Champions, with
money earned with that title making Brown an NRHA Million Dollar Rider. The first-ever Congress Cutting Champions Challenge helped round out opening weekend, with Redhead From Denver, owned by Lindy Wells and ridden by Bradey Davis of Texarkana, Texas, taking home the Congress Champion title with a score of 153. The Non Pro Congress Champion title went to Metallica Plays, owned and ridden by Priscilla Crawley Wilson of Unadilla, Georgia. Winning the Amateur division was Sly Smooth Girl, owned and ridden by Joey Varnadore of Appling, Georgia. Taking home the Bridleless Congress Cutting Challenge Champion title was Hot Dona, owned by Jarrett and Shannon Callahan and ridden by Gabe Reynolds of Vine Grove, Kentucky. Throughout the month, the lecture and demonstration series gave attendees 15 different opportunities to learn from experts in the equine industry without

leaving the grounds. The series successfully offered topics not typically covered elsewhere in the equine show world. On Saturday, October 12, Freestyle Reiners wowed the crowd, with defending Open Congress Champion Dan James taking home another NRHA Open Freestyle Reining Champion title riding Don Magnum. Winning the Non Pro division was Friday Night Sailing, ridden and owned by Frederick Win of Wayne, New Jersey. Over the course of the month, youth members competed in various events for the chance to be named the All-Around rider at the 2019 Quarter Horse Congress. Ohio youth member Emma Gore, snagged the 11-and-Under All-Around and the All-Around Youth titles. Ohio youth member Ellexxah Maxwell took home the 15-18 All-Around title as well. Ohio Quarter Horse Association members earned 46 Congress Champion and 43 Reserve Congress Champion titles. The Congress Masters rounded out the special events on October 26 where Hay Goodlookn, shown by Andy Cochran for Capital Quarter Horses LLC won the 2019 Congress Masters Western Pleasure Champion title. Al Right Already, ridden by Beth Case and owned by Rebekah Kazakevicius, took home the Congress Champion title for the 2019 Congress Masters Hunter Under Saddle. Thank you to everyone who continues to support the All American Quarter Horse Congress and to all Ohio members who take the time to compete and visit. We look forward to having you in 2020!

Ohio NYATT Team Brings Home Division I Champion Title Youth from state and regional Quarter Horse associations across the U.S. and Canada gathered for the largest National Youth Team Tournament in the world at the All American Quarter Horse Congress Sunday, October 20. This year’s National Youth Activity Team Tournament (NYATT) hosted 52 teams and offers two divisions of competition. Division I is a team entered in eight to fourteen NYATT classes while Division II teams are
entered in one to seven NYATT classes. This split is only for the awards ceremony so that each division competes for separate top ten division awards. Each team may consist of 1-14 riders, with no more than two members competing in each of the seven NYATT classes: Barrel Racing, Horsemanship, Hunt Seat Equitation, Hunter Under Saddle, Reining, Showmanship and Western Pleasure. To determine overall team standings, points are awarded for each individual’s efforts in every class, with first place receiving 10 points, second place nine points, and so on. In the Division I, the Ohio Quarter Horse Association NYATT team claimed top spot with 91 points, including first place win by Ellexxah Maxwell and 2nd by Ryan Flowers in Showmanship, and a reserve by Isabella D’Onofrio in Hunter Under Saddle. Southern Ohio QHA took third place behind Illinois with 58 total points and Northern Ohio QHA followed with fourth and 48 points. In the second year of Division II, the Rocky Mountain QHA team earned first place honors with 35 points, while South Carolina QHA took second with 25 points and Wisconsin QHA and Connecticut QHA tied with 22 points for third.

EOQHA had a great year in 2019 we would like to thank all of the exhibitors who attended our shows and to our officers, directors, and show staff. We started off the year by moving one of our shows to the Champions Center in Springfield and it turned out to be a very good move for everyone involved, numbers were up and the weather wasn’t an issue. Our second show was held in April at the Ohio Expo center as well as our fall show in September. The fall show ended up being the largest show EOQHA has had to date with over 450 stalls sold. Thank you to everyone who came out and made our shows such a success this year. Looking forward to 2020 EOQHA will host all three shows again in the same locations as they were last year and dates will be available soon. The year end awards banquet will be held in conjunction with the OQHA banquet this year on February 1st, 2020. Be sure to stop by and pick up your awards. We look forward to seeing everybody again next year.

2019 was another successful year for the Buckeye Reining Series and we are excited to award all our series winners! Please join us for the BRS Awards Banquet March 28th, 2020 at the Champions Center. It is sure to be a great time for all! Now, what so many have been asking and waiting for… The BRS 2020 dates! In 2015, when we first launched the Buckeye Reining Series, we did so to fill a need we saw in the reining horse industry. There were many good weekend shows, but there were very few larger events East of the Mississippi that offered something for everyone; large purses, great prizes, beginner level incentives, youth activities, good food, comradery and a ton of fun to round out the package. The Buckeye Reining Series filled that need and more. For the past five years, the BRS has been a huge success with competitors traveling from all over the country to compete for large purses and enjoy all the BRS has to offer. At the end of each year, when the show season is winding down, we take time to assess how well our shows were received that year. We look at what exhibitors and spectators liked or enjoyed the most, things that we can improve upon for the future and most importantly, we look at where we believe the industry is heading and make changes to our shows based on how we feel the Buckeye Reiners can have a significantly positive impact on the reining horse industry. In 2015, we pushed our 7 & Up maturity to help grow the value and longevity of the reining horse. We also kept show retainage at only 20% for our Derby and Futurity to ensure more money goes back to the exhibitor. The popular Youth Prize Closet was started and from the very beginning the BRS awarded high quality and unique prizes to the Top Five in every class. In 2016, we launched the first ever No Entry Fee Derby to help lower exhibitor costs at a large added money event. The BRS VIP Lounge was created to show sponsor
appreciation, the BRS Youth Scholarship Program was started and the now famous Youth Party at every show was taken to a whole new level. 2017 saw $1,500 Added Open and Non Pro classes as well as the addition of a derby to our August Futurity Show schedule. Three slates of youth classes were offered during our May show and the BRS partnered with the Ohio Quarter Horse Association so points earned in AQHA classes at BRS shows would count towards OQHA’s Year End Standings as well as state qualifying for the AQHYA World Show. In 2018, we did the $30,000 Buckeye Bonus to give back to the exhibitor and show how much we appreciate your support of the Buckeye Reining Series. We also hosted the first ever Ranch Riding Futurity and added a No Entry Fee Masters division to the Non Pro Derby. In 2019, we worked with the facility to accommodate an earlier arrival date for all exhibitors without incurring a penalty. $1,000 Added Unrestricted Youth Classes were added to each show and we continue to work tirelessly to stay at the forefront of our offerings to ensure the BRS has something for everyone to come and enjoy. Looking forward to 2020, we spent a long time studying the industry and feel that focusing on QUALITY over QUANTITY is most important. There was a surplus of shows this year that have followed our lead and stepped up their game with more added money and extra incentives to draw exhibitors. Kudos to those groups and associations for helping to strengthen our industry in the Eastern part of the country! We are excited to head out on the road more in 2020 and be a part of your events. With that in mind, the Buckeye Reining Series is going to step it up once more! We will be combining our series into one major event that truly has it all! The BRS, Buckeye Reining Spectacular, will be held September 3-6, 2020 at the Champions Center. The Spectacular will have $100,000+ in added money and feature the McGee Farms Futurity! But we’re not stopping there. A derby, 7&Up Maturity, Ranch Riding classes and large AQHA classes will also be included giving you the chance to qualify early for the 2021 World Show! There will also be Weekend Bonus Awards, a new Youth Team. Tournament, $1,000 Added Unrestricted Youth Class and lots of fun, food and entertainment. This is definitely a show you do not want to miss! Mark your calendars now and keep your eyes peeled for more exciting news to be announced as we combine our shows into one great Spectacular Event!!!

What will you contribute? As the OQHYA President, I plan to lead with integrity, heart, and determination to see through another successful year as a youth organization. I hope to encourage more members to join with a passion for Quarter Horses and an interest in leadership with the help of fellow officers and directors, as well as encourage activity from current board members. I’m excited to work with a fresh officer board and definitely want to start encouraging more participation from parents, but most of all, I want this year to be fun for everyone. It’s going to be an exciting year!
