AYTEF Hosts Most Successful Tournament to Date

On Oct. 23, 2023, the fifth annual Atlanta Youth Tennis & Education Foundation (AYTEF) Regions Bank Golf Tournament took place at Dunwoody Country Club, benefiting from beautiful fall weather. This event marked AYTEF’s most successful golf outing to date and stood as its primary fundraising initiative for the year. The substantial support from sponsors such as Regions Bank, Cobb County Toyota, Universal Tennis Academy, UBS, and Krause Auto Group played a pivotal role in securing crucial funds for AYTEF. These funds will directly contribute to the enhancement of tennis and education programs for under-resourced youth at Fair Oaks Tennis Center in Marietta.

The organization offers a range of free and low-cost programs, including a developmental pathway for tennis instruction that caters to individuals from beginners to those ready for competition. The AYTEF Learning Hub provides tutoring, homework assistance, and a life-skills curriculum covering financial literacy, character development, and other essential 21st-century skills. Additionally, a virtual STEM Learning Labs program supports youth in learning coding and engaging in STEM projects. Monthly Block Party outreach events underscore AYTEF’s commitment to inclusivity, community engagement, and empowerment, prioritizing diverse and underserved communities. AYTEF employs tennis as a tool to empower under-resourced youth in academic, emotional, and social aspects,

2024 L. Keith Wood Scholarship Program Opens in February In its 7th year, the ALTA Foundation’s L. Keith Wood Scholarship program is once again offering graduating high school students who have participated in the ALTA Junior Leagues and/or ALTA Challenge Ladder and/or the ALTA START program an opportunity to receive a $2,500 scholarship to an accredited college, university, or technical school of their choice. Eight recipients with a passion for the game of tennis and representative of the at-large community of ALTA will be selected from applications submitted. All interested applicants are encouraged to apply. Award Timeline: • The 2024 L. Keith Wood Scholarship Program opens Monday, Feb. 12, 2024. 12

Author Delves into Naomi Osaka’s Journey to the Top Journalist and author Ben Rothenberg’s new book, “Naomi Osaka: Her Journey to Finding Her Power and Her Voice,” goes deep into Osaka’s upbringing, rollercoaster fame, and most importantly how her impact expands off the court, pointing towards a bright future in tennis and the wider world. The tome is a deeply reported, revealing biography of a tennis phenomenon and activist, telling the untold story behind Osaka’s Grand Slam-winning career, her headline-making advocacy for racial justice and mental health, and the challenges of a life in the international spotlight. In the book readers will learn: • Why Osaka chose to play for Japan and how she identifies with the country

Tennis Warehouse, a leading global tennis retailer, has acquired Swetka’s Tennis Shop, a well-established tennis specialty store located in Mountain View, California. This move is part of Tennis Warehouse’s plan to expand further into the retail space where there is opportunity. Known for its dedication to exceptional customer service, Swetka’s has been a trusted fixture in the Bay Area for over 50 years. Alex and Sally Swetka opened the store in 1969. Swetka’s is still family-operated by John Swetka, who has been running the business for the last several decades. Last September, Chattahoochee Country Club hosted its 29th Annual Charity Pro-Am. Every year, their tennis committee selects a local charity in the Gainesville area to benefit from the premier event. For 2023, they chose Edmondson Telford Children’s Advocacy Center. The beautiful fall weather, at the facility overlooking the lake, provided the perfect setting for this three-day sporting event. Participants, members, and staff have been raving about the camaraderie and energy provided by the professionals brought in for the event. The team format used is a combination of men’s and women’s members at different levels that play alongside a pro for the weekend. The team aspect allows and encourages members to expand their tennis circles by cheering on teammates that they typically don’t play with or know to experience a full membership inclusion feel. Members and sponsors are encouraged to come watch and dine with the players throughout the fun-filled weekend.

Tennis Express Re-Acquired by Founder Tennis Express announced recently that Brad Blume, founder of the company, has re-acquired full ownership in the retail and online business. Previously, Blume had sold a majority interest in Tennis Express to Signa Sports United (SSU) but had remained president and a minority shareholder. “Recently, several news outlets mistakenly reported that Tennis Express was still part of SSU and was involved in bankruptcy proceedings,” Mr. Blume said. “Of course, this is completely inaccurate. Acrytech Merges with ACE Sport Surfaces ATSports, Inc. Sakkari and Stephens Commit to 2024 Credit One Charleston Open Maria Sakkari and Sloane Stephens have committed to the 2024 Credit One Charleston Open, the largest women’s-only professional tennis tournament in North America, March 30 - April 7, 2024, on Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina. Named WTA 500 Tournament of the Year, the Charleston Open is the annual clay season kickoff event on the Hologic WTA Tour and is hosted at the newly renovated and modernized Credit One Stadium. Sakkari ended her WTA season ranked within the top 10 for the third year in a row. Stephens is the 2016 Charleston champion and 2017 US Open champion. They join World No. 5 Jessica Pegula, World No. 6 and 2023 Charleston champion Ons Jabeur and World No. 12 and 2019 Charleston champion Madison Keys in this year’s player field. “We have an incredible field of tennis champions already committed to play in Charleston … and ticket sales and demand for 2024 continue to outperform previous records,” said Bob Moran, tournament director. “Maria had a strong 2023 season and delivered impressive results throughout the year. We are excited to welcome her back to Charleston after a brief hiatus and we know our fans are eager to watch one of the Netflix “Break Point” stars compete on our green clay. She made the quarterfinals in her last appearance in 2019. “I am really looking forward to competing again in Charleston after my last time there five years ago,” said Sakkari. “I played well on the green clay and really enjoyed the tournament’s laid-back atmosphere. I would love to lift the Charleston trophy next spring!” Stephens has competed in the Charleston field 10 times and holds a 12-9 record. She won the tournament title in 2016 and reached the quarterfinals round in 2019 and 2021. “Charleston is absolutely one of my favorite stops on tour, and I look forward to the tournament every year. The event always has amazing crowds, and I can’t wait to be back again in April,” said Stephens. The nine-day Credit One Charleston Open showcases a singles draw of 48 players, a qualifying draw of 24 players, and a doubles draw of 16 players. The event traditionally hosts more than 90,000 attendees on Daniel Island.

ach year in November, ALTA’s leaders and volunteers gather to celebrate our great organization. ALTA Board Chair Sandy Depa called the meeting to order at the Atlanta Athletic Club and introduced ALTA Treasurer Larry Waters who stated that 2023 was another successful year for ALTA, with increased participation in all leagues. He added that the organization is in a sound financial position. ALTA’s backbone is its great volunteers — from captains, coordinators and overall coordinators, to the league VPs, the Executive Committee, the various committees, and the Board of Directors. “On behalf of all the approximate 60,0000 ALTA members, we thank you for all that you do to make ALTA the great organization that it is,” said Depa. One of the newest developments in 2023 was the introduction of the ALTA Pickleball League, which had its inaugural season this past summer. There were more than 4,000 members and 200 teams that signed up for this first season of ALTA Pickleball. In 2024, Pickleball will grow to two seasons. Last year, we also introduced a twoyear pilot program to extend ALTA boundaries. This program allows facilities outside of our existing boundaries and annexation areas to apply to become an approved ALTA facility as a two-year pilot facility. Facilities in Cherokee, Forsyth, portions of Hall, Barrow, and Jackson Counties are now allowed to have ALTA teams. We are seeing a gradual growth in the number of ALTA “pilot” teams. Emmy Powell, ALTA’s Marketing Director, plans to introduce more mar-

keting efforts to these boundary areas in 2024. Although most people know the ALTA name for league play throughout Atlanta, the ALTA Foundation, under Rita Maloof’s leadership, made a huge impact in the community in 2023. “With continued focus on ‘Building Stronger Communities,’ the Foundation increased its giving by $35,000 over 2022, awarding more than $115,000 to new and existing underserved programs in metro Atlanta,” said Maloof. New partnerships with the Shepherd Center, Center for Movement Challenges, Above the Net and others, along with an increase in the number of Title I schools supported by our START program, are catalysts for growth as the footprint of the Foundation continues to expand. As she closes out her term on the ALTA Board of Directors and the many years serving on the Executive Committee, Depa thanked all the ALTA family of volunteers that have been there to support and help. “Those who came before and after — Larry, Marla, Bob, Joyce, Bill, Debbie, Lamar, Linda — thank you for all your support, advice and friendship throughout the years. I also want to thank my family and husband, Tony, and my friends for their support through this journey. Thank you.” Depa then asked 2023 ALTA President Linda Shepherd to share her incredible year. Shepherd spoke about the Junior Pilot program, which became permanent in 2023. Our goal was to give junior players, 16 and 17 years of age, an opportunity to play in the AA adult leagues. April brought a vision to reality. After

months of a dedicated, hard-working committee, a Pickleball League was ready to hit the courts. “We had ALTA members with pickleball experience, pickleball ambassadors from around the city, and other ALTA VP’s willing to do the work to get those paddles swinging,” Shepherd said. In May, an incredible young ALTA player, Saketh Ramakrishnan, reached out to Shepherd. He had ideas on ways we could reach other junior players in the Atlanta area and introduce them to ALTA. “We were interested to hear his suggestions and asked him to work with our Junior Leagues Vice President and our marketing director as a Junior League Tennis Ambassador,” Shepherd said. Since then, he has worked with us to expand our social media to reach junior tennis players. July was exciting as we again supported and attended the Atlanta Open. With a new tournament director working with our marketing director, ALTA was featured bigger and better than ever. From t-shirts being tossed to repeated announcements throughout the week, Atlanta soon realized ALTA was where ATLANTA Comes to Play! Shepherd closed out her speech thanking the office staff and recognizing our fantastic ALTA photographer, Laura Barnard. 2024 ALTA President Chequetta Allen stepped up to the podium to talk about how ALTA will continue its strong momentum into the coming year. Al-

len says the passion she felt for tennis guided her toward volunteering with her community tennis association, the Coan Tennis Association. “It was on the courts in Edgewood, Atlanta where literally, the ball started rolling for me,” she said. “I moved from a free lesson participant to a volunteer, and on to the President of that organization.” Her enjoyment of the game led Allen to ALTA, the league that has provided her with countless opportunities to play. As a result of her league play experiences, she developed a curiosity about the organization. She says she would get ALTA’s Net News magazine, and the issue that always captured her attention was the January/February issue with the Executive Committee on the cover. “I was intrigued, and the question I would ask myself became, “How do you get on the cover?” Talk about speaking something into existence! I put a question out there and I think it’s pretty cool how God responded,” she said. In sports, we find that momentum is always essential. Regardless of the sport, you will find individual athletes or teams are either gaining or losing momentum. As you all know, tennis is no different. It is a game where momentum shifts create critical moments for players and teams. The same is true with the ALTA organization. The tone has been set by those who

have come before Allen, and ALTA has positive momentum. “Momentum is important. ALTA is no different from your tennis or pickleball teams. When our organization has momentum, we want to keep it going,” Allen said. Our boundary expansion pilot serves as a physical and visual representation of this momentum. Allen said: “My predecessors set the wheels in motion. They have cleared the route and paved the way, now it’s my job to accelerate our forward movement.” If we really want to talk about continuous, positive traction that allows for greater momentum gains, then we don’t have to look any further than the ALTA Foundation. With steady growth in their grant and scholarship awards, as well as the broadening of the START program from two to 11 schools, the foundation is strengthening legacy relationships, while expanding the ALTA brand and vision to encompass seven new community partnerships, including the iconic Shepherd Center. The foundation’s efforts are making tennis and ALTA more inclusive of all who want to participate. Allen said each of us, as well as ALTA, is a machine in motion with moving parts that require our care and attention, some labor, a bit of renewal, and sometimes a few new parts to make sure our momentum is not interrupted. “First, although she isn’t here tonight, I want to publicly acknowledge and thank my longtime friend and fellow ALTA member, Kendra Jenkins, who encouraged me to move from fangirl to tennis girl,” Allen said. Last, but not least, to the current and past ALTA Board members, Allen thanked them for entrusting her with the privilege of being the 2024 ALTA President. “I recognize that we are an organization in motion, one with great momentum that continues to be propelled forward. In a nutshell, ALTA is on a roll and in the words of Robbie Lawler, “when you’re on a roll, you want to stay busy — you want to keep that momentum going.” That is Allen’s purpose, and it is her promise to continue the actions required to keep ALTA’s momentum going. Over the years, I have served as team captain multiple times in my women’s leagues. While continuing to play tennis, I also began playing pickleball. I have been a Pickleball League coordinator since the 2023 summer inaugural season. Pickleball was new territory for ALTA in 2023, and the volunteers had to be ready for anything. “All of our coordinators in the summer season of pickleball were notable for their excitement regarding ALTA’s new sport,” said Marla Michalewicz, ALTA’s Pickleball League VP. “Sandy was available to her captains, answered questions, talked through the issues, and reached out to the overall coordinator or me when she needed clarity or support. But she distinguished herself by being available to me when I needed feedback regarding rules and procedures from the ground level. The new league presented some pitfalls for our new volunteers, and Sandy navigated those pitfalls with grace and humor. She diffused certain situations with a

Junior League coordinator and currently an overall coordinator. “We can always count on Kim to be the first to go above and beyond,” said Wendy Fee, Junior Leagues VP. “She exceeds our expectations and always steps up when she is needed most. Kim has been an asset to ALTA and a fantastic volunteer. When in her presence, you can sense a very self-assured woman who demonstrates great leadership qualities.” Annette Harlow Senior Leagues Birthplace: Durham, NC Career: Financial advisor ALTA history: This summer (2023) was my first season as a coordinator. I’m a newbie! I took up tennis late and started about 20 years ago when I left my career as a financial advisor. I’ve captained dozens of teams, including women’s, mixed, and senior leagues. Harlow jumped in with both feet and a lot of enthusiasm during her first season as an ALTA coordinator. Overall coordinator Jane Milton said, “Annette had some interesting situations come up this season and she was thoughtful at how she approached them. She would always confirm her thoughts and responses before giving them to the captains. She has a very good grasp of the ALTA

ALTA history: I first joined ALTA in the late 90s. Since 2021, I have captained a Sunday Women’s League team, served as an ALTA mixed coordinator, and helped my local tennis center create beginner ALTA teams. I am passionate about advancing ALTA’s mission, supporting ALTA captains, and engaging local community members to play more tennis. I am also incredibly honored to serve as ALTA’s Foundation Secretary for the upcoming term. Let’s go, team! John Lowell, Mixed Doubles League VP, claims Harris has been a remarkable coordinator. “To paraphrase one of her captains that I spoke with, ‘she was a coach and a teacher, and she kept us out of trouble,’” he said. “When I first spoke to Karen about becoming a coordinator, I noticed a book she carried around with her as a captain. It was more organized and complete than anything I could imagine. She talked

about her passion for making ALTA better. Well, this year, she certainly walked that talk.” Lisa Hills Senior Day Leagues Birthplace: New Orleans, LA Career: CPA, worked as an auditor for 10 years. Left the workforce to become a stay-at-home mom of two sons. Has served in various volunteer positions for the past 32 years. ALTA History: Moved to Atlanta in June 2000. Joined my first ALTA team in spring, 2002. Started at C-6, played as high as AA-3 over the years, and current level is A-7. Captained my first ALTA team in the fall of 2003. Since then, I have captained 31 seasons, including Junior Boys, Thursday Women, Sunday Women, Mixed, and Senior Women: ALTA Coordinator for Thursday Women since fall of 2007 and Senior Day Women since fall of 2022. “Lisa is a knowledgeable coordinator, and she works well with captains that have presented some major issues,” explained Joan Marcinko, Senior Day League VP. “Lisa is levelheaded, professional, knowledgeable on all ALTA rules and procedures. Lisa also is a good listener and a wonderful communicator. She is really good at calling me when any issues arise too, she always keeps me in the loop.”

Brandi Nickerson Sunday Women’s League Birthplace: Muncie, IN Career: I worked in pharmaceuticals after college and have been a licensed realtor since 2015. I achieved the Atlanta Realtors Association Multi-Million Dollar Producer Award 20152022. ALTA history: I played volleyball in college and began playing tennis through ALTA in 2015. I’ve captained and co-captained several teams and became a coordinator in the spring of 2023. This is my second season as a coordinator. “Brandi is one of our newer coordinators, but she’s done an exceptional job providing support for her captains and teams from the very beginning,” said Susan Levin, Sunday Women’s League VP. “Her enthusiasm, positive attitude, and warm personality are contagious! Brandi is knowledgeable about the rules and always eager to learn more. She enjoys the interaction with her captains, keeps them informed with clear communications, and when there have been challenges or issues needing a resolution, she addresses them with professionalism. She’s always willing to help and assist others whenever needed. She’s currently an active member in five of our ALTA leagues (2023) and has

been described by some as an ‘ambassador’ for ALTA, due to her love of tennis and for our organization.” ALTA loves welcoming new volunteers! Jerry Niemeyer Men’s League Birthplace: Des Moines, IA (before color TV) Career: I spent 35+ years in the automotive aftermarket. Prior to retiring, I worked for more than 10 years in the real estate market in Atlanta. ALTA history: I am approaching my 35th year as an ALTA volunteer. I was Chairman of the Board in 2014 and ALTA President in 2011. I was first Vice President in 2010. I also served as VP of Media and Special Programs and was the Men’s League VP in 1997-98. I have served as a coordinator in the Men’s League, Senior Leagues, and the Mixed Doubles League. This is the second time I have been honored with this award. I was Men’s League Coordinator of the Year in 2006. In 2024, I’ll be the Pickleball League VP. Volunteers who have been around for a while are extremely valuable to ALTA. “Over the years, Jerry has served ALTA in just about every role, and continues to volunteer where needed,” Men’s League VP Greg McAfee said about Niemeyer. “One thing that sets him apart is how he helps new captains learn how to be great captains by explaining the rules and keeping them on track with managing their team.”

I believe we should focus on identifying the activities that will allow us to maintain our momentum and put the most energy into those activities. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you would do? I would donate funds to my local community tennis association (Coan Tennis Association) to further our efforts to expose inner city and low-income candidates to the game of tennis. What’s the weirdest gift you’ve ever received? A power surge cord and a broken microwave. A boyfriend gave them to me for my birthday. If you had a pet parrot, what would you teach it to say? “You’ve got to be kidding me!” What item do you hope will be obsolete in 20 years? Paper files If you could meet any author, who would it be and why? Paul Coelho. I found his book, “The Alchemist,” to be very uplifting, and I would like to ask questions about how he developed the story and what his inspiration for the book was. 28

As a past president of the ALTA Foundation, I care deeply about the impact we (ALTA) can have — through the game of tennis and now pickleball — on underserved communities in Atlanta. Providing options for safe, afterschool havens and socialization is huge these days. I’m a lifelong supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and even had the opportunity to meet Danny Thomas at our home when I was a child. Finding cures and saving children…how can you not care? In another life, I’m pretty sure I was… a chopping champion. I love to cook and never follow recipes. I come up with some amazing dishes with whatever I can find in my less-thanfully-stocked kitchen. What is something you think everyone should at least try once? Wheelchair tennis! I had no idea until I was strapped into a chair the amount of upper body strength and hand-eye coordination necessary to move a chair and attempt to hit a tennis ball at the same time. Hats off to all wheelchair tennis players! If you had a pet parrot, what would you teach it to say? “YOURS!” What’s the weirdest gift you’ve ever received? Maybe not the weirdest, but the most unexpected and joyous was a year’s worth of holiday inflatable dinosaurs. The mystery boxes would show up about a week before the occasion. The weird thing about it — I still have no idea who sent them to me!

He’s witnessed first-hand most historical events in my lifetime and covered a number of these in his books. The winter league has more teams than the summer league of ’23, and I want to see that trend continue.

A Big Thank You To Our ALTA Captains

very time I think about how much work goes into getting 60,000 tennis players on the courts each season, I am overwhelmed at all that goes into this incredible ALTA tennis organization. To begin with, we have so many volunteers in this “tennis machine” that it is difficult to know who to thank first. I’d like to take the time to thank my Senior Day League captains for all that they do to get their teams registered for the season, for being creative and competitive with their lineups, for hosting visiting teams and paying court fees, and for making sure their team finishes a full seven weeks and sometimes more. A tough job indeed no matter what level of tennis you play! Being a captain or co-captain is simply not an easy job and being a team leader often can be challenging. Our ALTA captain’s manual is 49 pages long and good captains read every bit of it and share the information with their teammates. To begin with, captains need to submit their team roster before the ALTA roster deadline or give it to their club pro in a timely manner. Smart captains submit requests for review with their rosters if they have any concerns to be shared with the VP. We thank you for any information you share to make the scheduling process easier. Remember that we do check and validate what you tell us! Once the team schedules come out, a good captain always checks to see that everyone is on the roster before the first match. If additional players are needed, it is the captain’s job to find more players. As the season begins, lineups have to be made, and captains normally map out a playing schedule based on player availability. They need to know all about play-

er movement and sandbagging, too. Our ALTA website offers a great tool for captains to prepare and check for valid lineups. Organized captains plan ahead for matches, print out scorecards, and make sure someone is in charge for each match. Knowing the ALTA rules of play AND the USTA rules is a must for every ALTA team captain; a good leader knows these and helps the team get through issues during match play. A good team captain also knows what to do in case of inclement weather. Make up matches can be tough, and a captain has to know who is available and how to play a makeup without losing any points. After the match, our captains report their scores and approve scorecards in a timely fashion. That makes our senior coordinators’ jobs a lot easier! Captains, thank you for what you do for your teams! These may all sound like basic, routine captain’s duties, but add to the mix playing matches early due to holidays, addressing protests and complaints from opponents, and a lot of rule interpretations that do not always cover situations addressed in the rules! Whew! But today, as we look forward to a new spring ALTA season, we celebrate YOU, the captains in our league! It will be a fresh new season, with good exercise, great sportsmanship, comradery, and competition. Having worked with the Atlanta senior tennis leagues for a long time with both USTA and ALTA, I see so many repeat names of team captains season after season. What a gift it is to have so many of you who offer your time and talents. You ARE the backbone of our volunteer base, and we appreciate you so very much. Thanks for all you continue to do to support us playing in the Senior Day League.

lthough there is still a chill in the air, it’s time to register your team for the spring season. The deadline for roster submission is January 18. The full ALTA calendar and roster registration packet can be found on the ALTA website. Now would be a great time to renew your ALTA dues if you haven’t already and update your contact information if necessary. Captaining during the spring season can be challenging, with spring break availability and player movement. I encourage all captains to check availability for spring break week with their players. If you find you have little to no availability, please reach out to your opponents as early as possible about playing the match or just a line or two early. While most major public-school districts have the same week off this year (April 1–5), that doesn’t necessarily mean that all teams have availability

issues for that week. I encourage all teams to work together to play early if their schedules allow. Player movement rules still apply and can easily be tracked using your tracking sheet on the ALTA website. Please review player movement rules in detail before the season begins. And as always, you can reach out to your level coordinator with questions. Atlanta’s morning rush hour can pose an issue for the Thursday Women’s League. Allow yourself extra time for traffic so you can arrive stress-free by 9:15 a.m. and promptly start at 9:30 a.m. We want to be sure all our ALTA members are on the team of their choosing, so please check with all your players before submitting your roster. he spring Sunday Women’s League roster registration began on January 1. As we celebrate the beginning of another year, I look forward to our Sunday Women celebrating new friendships as we begin the ALTA spring season. Spring brings excitement and energy. It also brings spring breaks, festivals, spring showers, and Easter Sunday. Some teams will want to play matches early, while others want to play on the scheduled Sunday. Both deserve their positions to be recognized and not criticized. Both have their reasons for wanting/needing to play at a certain time. My wish is that we all celebrate new feelings around ALTA’s spring season. We all play ALTA for different reasons; we love it, and we look forward to spending our Sunday afternoons on the court with a pleasant group of ladies in a fun, competitive match. I started playing ALTA in the 1980’s, and believe it or not, spring season had Easter, Mother’s Day, and school breaks even then. I remember our team deciding who would play on Easter and who would play on Mother’s Day. We also would discuss school breaks and if parents with children would be traveling. We would give the first choice of not playing on Easter to teammates with small children and if you played on Easter, you were not expected to play on Mother’s Day. We were like family to each other, caring for each other’s children when the moms were on the court. I remember cooking out, sharing homemade delicacies with other teams, and just making it a full day of tennis fun and fellowship.

Schedules go online February 29, and the first season match is Sunday, March 17. Our last regular season match is April 28. Then, it’s on to the playoffs culminating with the AA City Finals on Saturday, May 11 and City Finals for our A, B, and C levels on Sunday, May 19. Captains should start early getting availability of team members who can play on those special days. Those teams who want to work together to play matches early can be played even before the season schedule begins. Just remember that for all lines or a portion of the match played early, normal “default” rules apply. So, it’s best to play from the top line down if the entire match is not played as a dual meet. See this rule found in Adult General Rules. IV. Dual Meets. E: The twenty-minute default rule as defined in the glossary is in effect for all scheduled matches. A defaulted match is scored as one point for the opposing team. When a match is defaulted, it must be the lowest position. If a higher position is defaulted, any win at a lower position(s) will be forfeited. If any positions are played before the regularly scheduled time of the dual meet, the above default rules apply. Teams may not agree to schedule matches late. I’m excited to take on this new task as the Sunday Women’s League Vice President. My one big ask of you is to be kind to each other. With prices of everything rising daily, being kind is free, and who doesn’t love “free?” Let’s give it a try.

Tips For Having A Successful Junior Spring Season BY WENDY FEE, JUNIOR LEAGUES VICE PRESIDENT

s a player, are you ready to play your best tennis season ever? As a team manager or coach, are you ready to lead your team in such a way that the kids have the most memorable tennis experience? Each year brings on new expectations. Many coaches and players make New Year’s resolutions which help them to have a more positive and enjoyable tennis season. You might think about taking more coaching so you can achieve your athletic goals and improve your performance. Some might concentrate on their lifestyles, such as telling yourself you will get plenty of rest the night before your match and that you plan to stretch more to prevent injuries while on the court. One resolution of mine as the VP of the Junior Leagues is to better guide the Junior coordinators who are in direct contact with the team managers and coaches. They are volunteering to help everyone have a fair and more pleasurable experience. They work hard for the team managers and coaches all season so that the players may have their best tennis adventure yet. The Junior Leagues have the largest turnaround among the ALTA leagues. The players move up through each age group until they are old enough to play in the adult leagues. It’s exciting that new players and team managers join us each season. We have four age levels: 10U, 12U, 15U, and 18U. Novice tennis players may join ALTA as young as 7 years old or even as old as 19. We want this to be a fun, friendly recreational environment, where members can play and learn how to be competitive in matches but still maintain an enjoyable, healthy experience. All this leads me to providing helpful tips for a successful spring season: No cheering/clapping/ coaching. This may seem like an unusual rule, but it is in place so that the kids play a fair match without stresses or influences from outside the courts. Although it is hard to wait until a match is over to congratulate a player, it is one of the most important rules in Junior League

play. Many of these young players are nervous and need to concentrate while learning to have fun at the same time. You can play matches early to help other teams or even your own team due to spring and fall breaks or any conflicting schedules. Just NEVER play a match LATE or after the scheduled match date and time (unless you experience a rain out). Please text or email your coordinator with any early play information; it’s best to keep things documented. Always check your roster before you play your matches. Sometimes, you think a player has been added only to find out you played someone illegally or forgot to add them. You have until midnight the night before a match to add a player. Making sure team managers use the ALTA lineup checker is essential in making sure the players’ lineup is legal (no “sandbagging”). Sandbagging is when you move a winning player or pair down in order to move a losing player or pair up in the lineup. Using the lineup checker is a free tool ALTA provides for all teams. Always exchange your scorecards before the match begins. If the team manager can’t be there, designate an adult or parent who knows the rules to step in to manage the scorecard. Have the correct balls for the specific age group that is playing: 10U–orange, 12U–green dot, and 15U and 18U use USTA-approved yellow balls. Always default from the lower position, 2S and 2D. Remember, a default at 1S or 1D results with points forfeited at 2S or 2D if played. Make sure you are on the correct court playing against the correct matched player. It seems simple, but players can end up playing against the wrong opponent on a certain line accidentally. Stay connected with fellow teammates and join the ALTA Juniors Instagram @Juniorleaguealta. Prepare Now For A Successful Spring Season

s we approach another spring Men’s League season, I’d like to give you some tips on preparing your roster, and I will answer a few questions that always come up during this period. First, for you captains: Contact all your returning players and make sure they are committed to playing this spring. Find out how much they plan to be available. This will help determine if you need to add players and to make sure you are not adding anyone who doesn’t want to be on the roster. Players: Please proactively reach out to your captain and let them know this information. Second, be sure to pay for your 2024 ALTA tennis membership. We get a lot of requests for folks to be added back on a roster when they were not included due to their membership not being paid. Third, let’s talk about leveling. Initially, your team is placed at the level based on the average of your team’s top 10 individually ranked players. If you are adding a higher ranked player, you can recalculate your team’s average and use the Roster Placement page in the roster kit to find out where your team

likely would be placed. It’s also best to get players added during the open roster period or during the roster correction period. Players wanting to be added after the schedules come out may see their ratings change higher if they played on a winning Mixed Doubles team and that might affect their ability to join a specific team. Finally, and certainly not least, this is a recreational league. Everyone wants to play tennis and have a good time. No money is on the line, no endorsements are at risk, so please be kind, courteous, and welcoming to your opponents. In recent seasons, we have seen an uptick in bad sportsmanship, and it is up to you to turn that around. If a call on the court doesn’t go your way, just remember that one point isn’t going to make or break the match or the season. Even if it does, remember you are out there for exercise, community support, and maybe a bag tag if you are fortunate. Registration for the spring season opens on January 1. So, as you are sitting around watching bowl games, go ahead and login and pay your 2024 dues and get ready for some great competition and fun in the spring.

he 2024 Wheelchair League tennis season is here! This year it will consist of five individual sessions, which include competitive matches and learning clinics over a 32-week period for newcomers and experienced players. Starting Tuesday, March 12, the ALTA Wheelchair tennis season begins at the Hudlow Tennis Center in Norcross, with wheelchair doubles matches for all levels, followed by four sessions of clinics in the month of May. During the summer (June & July) we have our annual Run/Roll competition. This is where a wheelchair player is partnered with a stand-up player.

If you are new to Run/Roll, feel free to join us at one of our clinics to see what it’s all about and keep your eye out for our Run/Roll mixer as well. As the summer comes to an end and fall begins, we will have our second, four-week clinic in August and then finish the 2024 season with more wheelchair doubles matches in September and October. During a recent match, my opponent hit a short lob, and I was at the net. The opponent was yelling “short” and “back up” to her partner. I went for the overhead but hit I into the net. I felt all of the yelling was very distracting and claimed the point due to a voice let since they were talking while the ball was on the way to our side of the court. My opponents were not happy and said it was not our point because I chose to play the ball. Who is correct?

While there are elements in this scenario in which both teams were correct, your opponents should have received this point. (Friend of Court, Part Two, Code 33 and 34). 33: Claiming a hindrance: A player who claims a hindrance must stop play as soon as possible. 34: Talking when the ball is in play: Doubles players should not talk when the ball is moving toward their opponent’s court. Any talking that interfered with an opponent’s ability to play a ball is a hindrance, and the opponent who is about to hit the ball may claim the point based on a deliberate hindrance. If the opponent chooses to play the ball and misses it, the opponent loses the point because the opponent did not make a timely claim of the hindrance. The reasoning behind this is you do not get two chances to win the point.

Evaluate And Re-evaluate Your Game

t’s a great time to re-evaluate your game. The pros have finished the 2023 campaign and after a short off-season have been training for a strong kickoff to 2024. I thought it would be fun to share some insight on how they shift gears and ramp up the intensity for a long trip to the Australian Open. The beginning of the year is mission-critical to springboard your ranking and confidence going into a long tour around the world the rest of the year. I always felt if I had a solid start to the season, it took pressure off to capture the valuable ATP points in the spring. Even if I played well but didn’t earn many wins, I put more pressure on myself at those really tough Indian Wells and Miami Open events. Adding pressure in any way is not helpful towards enjoying the tour life and performing at the highest level. These days, the pros never cease taking care of their “machine.” The body is always priority number one. There will be a “cheat meal” here and there, but going to the gym is a daily routine with a range-of-motion focus, along with resistance band training. Jumping rope with movement exercises using ladders also is common. There will be some time away from the court to refresh the mind but making sure the body stays tuned up is the priority. After about two weeks away from the court, players start hitting again with a focus in rhythm and timing. I’m really interested to see what Coco Gauff does in this area with Brad Gilbert. Gauff had a wonderful summer run that ended with a US Open victory. Gilbert, her new coach, was a massive help restor-

ing Gauff’s confidence and producing her best tennis. The fall was not that strong and the off-season is where I’m interested to see what changes can be made to the 19-year-old’s game. There will be a focus on her forehand that can be inconsistent and short during rallies. Opponents attack that side as much as possible because the Gauff backhand is lethal! I would want to know from Gauff what she thought of her forehand and what happens in her own words when it breaks down under pressure. As a coach, that would give me valuable intel on how to approach improving that side. Going over video analysis is helpful and players really learn a ton visually by watching themselves play. Do you record your strokes? This really is an outstanding tool to see what is going on with your swing. Make sure you have identified the shots you need work on and the type of balls that disrupt that swing. Video can be extremely helpful if you have a ball toss that is not reliable. To see your toss and service motion from another perspective can be valuable to improving your serve. The new year is here and enjoying the new improvements you have made to your game is so important. ny t e n n i s player that I have ever spent some time coaching wou ld know that I am a huge advocate for hitting the ball “on the full” whenever possible. When a lob goes up, players must do everything they can to hit an overhead; after all, it is the most aggressive shot in tennis and the winning percentage should be high. However, many players position themselves close to the net for putaway volleys and simply just say “Yours” and run to the other side when a lob goes up above their heads. The lob is an effective shot for multiple reasons: 1) To nullify a net player who is crowding the net. 2) To take net position away from the other team and take it yourselves (take the net over after a successful lob please). 3) Many players do not have confident overheads. 4) To find the baseline player’s backhand when lobbed over the correct side. So, ALTA players, use the lob and conversely, work on taking the overhead. JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2024 NETNEWS

Why Does Etiquette Matter?

love the etiquette aspect of tennis. I love thinking about it. It’s my main passion in life … and I’m kidding. As a teaching professional, I can sometimes take for granted the most boring (yet most important) aspects of our sport. Proper etiquette simply increases the enjoyment of tennis for everyone. So, let’s arm ourselves with a few best practices. The point of this is to increase the fun factor for you and your teams. Most of us aren’t starving for confrontation or drama, so if we are courteous, we can save everyone trouble and heartache. Here are some specific scenarios or “Did You Knows” that you may come across. Did you know: We don’t need to return obvious out balls? According to The Code (USTA’s player guide to fair play and the unwritten rules of tennis), a player doesn’t need to put into play or hit over the net an obvious fault. To do so is rude and may even be a form of gamesmanship. It slows down the pace of the match. It’s also just safer as players who hit obvious out balls may not be expecting the ball to come back. Did you know: The way we enter and exit courts matters? When you enter or exit a court, you should not disrupt the play of another court or match. Whether that court is being used for a lesson or match, one always should wait until current play is at a stopping point before asking to come through. And please close the gate when you’re coming and going. Did you know: How we watch a match matters? It can be an emotional experience to watch a match. And when things get emotional, we sometimes forget the etiquette to spectating. Essentially, we can boil it down to a few safe protocols: • Applaud good tennis not unforced errors. Unforced errors don’t need to be celebrated. It can be tough to applaud an opponent, but we should when there’s good tennis. It’s good for us. And when I hear a cheer for a double fault, I want to cry for the breach in protocol. • Players are the only ones with any input on line calls. I don’t know about you, but as a spectator I’m always right, and it’s hard to be quiet when I know I’m right. But alas, silence is golden here. The last thing anyone wants is a spectator trying to influence a call. Leave the playing to the players. • Volume control is important. Good etiquette is being mindful of your distance to the court and players, and the volume of your conversation. So, why does etiquette matter? It matters because it’s one of the aspects of tennis that makes it beautiful. Etiquette requires doing something inconvenient for yourself to be more considerate of someone else. Etiquette matters because it’s thinking of others in disguise. And we’re always grateful when others do it for us. 52

My favorite tennis memory is: Zonals as a junior for Team Southern was some of the most fun I had ever had as a tennis player — spending time at the University of Texas and competing against other top players from across the country. My favorite professional players are: Sampras, Federer, and Alcaraz. #1 reason why I enjoy teaching & coaching tennis: Contributing to the growth of a person’s athletic endeavors along with building their self-confidence is incredibly rewarding. What important tennis message do you want to promote? Tennis puts a premium on integrity, problem solving, working with others, competing, the list goes on. The only limits tennis may have are the limits I put on it. Tennis makes me healthier and I’ll always give back for that!

1 (8 oz.) container cream cheese spread 2 Tbsp. prepared horseradish 8 (4-inch) miniature pita rounds, cut in half 4-6 large, green leaf lettuce leaves, torn ¾ lb. thinly sliced deli roast beef ½ small red onion 1 avocado, peeled and thinly sliced

Stir together cream cheese and horseradish until well blended. Spread mixture evenly inside pita halves (2 tsp. each). Stuff pita halves evenly with lettuce, roast beef, onion slices, and avocado. (Add avocado slices when ready to serve to prevent them from turning brown.)

1 (3 oz.) package cream cheese, softened ½ cup mayonnaise 1 tsp. paprika ¼ tsp. salt 2 cups (8 oz.) shredded smoked Cheddar cheese 2 cups (8 oz.) shredded smoked Gouda cheese ½ (8.5-oz.) jar sun-dried tomatoes in oil, drained and chopped 14 bread slices (sourdough and dark wheat) Stir together cream cheese and next three ingredients in a large bowl until blended. Stir in shredded cheeses and sun-dried tomatoes until combined. Spread cheese mixture on half of bread slices (about 1/3 cup on each); top with remaining bread slices.

Cut the tops off the King’s Hawaiian Rolls. You can usually do this while they are all still connected. Place in a large casserole dish. Toss the meatballs in the sauce and place a single meatball on each roll. Top each meatball with a slice of cheese. Replace the tops of the rolls. Melt butter and stir in garlic powder and parsley. Drizzle or brush onto the tops of the rolls. Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil and bake 10 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 10 minutes or until the sliders are hot and the cheese is melted.

It’s A New Year And A New Winter League For Pickleball

he winter Pickleball League is on the horizon, and we are excited to get this party started. We have 40 more teams than we had in our initial summer season. Many of those teams are new to the league, and we certainly give them a hearty welcome to ALTA’s second pickleball season. The inaugural season of ALTA Pickleball ended in August at the Atlanta Pickleball Center with 18 teams receiving their awards for excelling in their assigned levels. The season was eventful in mostly good ways, but it came with a steep learning curve. There were some stumbles along the way, but that is all in the past. We heard your concerns and we have smoothed out many of those rough edges that appeared during our initial season. We have expanded the playoffs to reflect our more familiar tennis playoff procedures. All first- and second-place teams 76

will earn playoff spots. Depending on how many divisions are at your level, third- and fourth-place teams may also be eligible. Now that we have one season behind us, we have team histories to help us with team placement. We anticipate that this season will be more competitive, and therefore more fun. We have assembled an excellent team of volunteers to help you through the winter season. We have former ALTA presidents, former league vice presidents, and volunteers with more than 15 years of experience to assist you. More importantly, several of our coordinators have also volunteered with USA Pickleball. Their expertise with this sport will help all of us through this winter season. We hope you had some great holidays, but now it’s time to warm up and get the pickleball party started. Where else can you dink your way to a championship?

How to select the best shot when at the non-volley-zone BY CASEY KAY, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF RACQUET SPORTS, PIEDMONT DRIVING CLUB

hen all four players are at the non-volley-zone (also known as “the kitchen”) during a doubles match, knowing the best shot to play is essential. Due to the rules about play in this zone, there is a good amount of strategy surrounding shot selection and ball placement. Knowing the three zones and the importance of contact height In pickleball, there are three, different zones which are determined by the height of your contact point with the ball. • Red Zone – When you contact the ball below the net or below your knees. • Yellow Zone – When you contact the ball around net height or between your knees and waist. • Green Zone – When you contact the ball above the net or above your waist. Shot selection The best shot for you to play is determined by which zone the ball is hit from. If the ball is in the: • Red zone – Almost always dink and look to be patient. • Yellow zone – You have two main options: speed-up or dink. • Green zone – Look to attack and put the ball away! • Traditionally, the red and green zones require less decision-making than the yellow zone. Navigating the yellow zone When the ball is in the yellow zone, it can be tricky to know exactly which shot to go for. Generally, you have two main options: 1. Dink – A dink is a soft shot back at your opponents’ feet. You can use cross-court dinks to be more aggressive in forcing a pop up from your opponent. 2. Speed Up – A speed up is when you add pace to the ball without necessarily going for a winner. Hitting a speed-up shot takes time away from your opponent and puts them in an uncomfortable position. The goal of this shot is to generate a green zone shot that is easier for you to put away. A great target to aim for is right at someone or more specifically their dominant hand-side hip or shoulder.

In a Pickle? Here’s ALTA’s answers to your burning pickleball questions. Last season, ALTA put our team at the wrong level, and we won very few points. How do I know that won’t happen again this season? Last year, in our first season as a pickleball league, we did not have a past performance history to aid in the team placement process. Combined with the needs of the league, your team’s performance from last season will help us make a more accurate team placement.

Why does ALTA allow the use of tennis court nets for pickleball matches? Much the way the tennis league takes its lead from USTA, the pickleball league takes its lead from USApickleball.org: “One Pickleball Court per Tennis Court: The simplest way is just to lower the tennis net to 34” in the center. Lines may be taped or painted on the court for pickleball. Then the court can be used for both tennis and pickleball very easily.” Are there team or player movement violations in ALTA pickleball like there are in ALTA tennis? No. From week to week, players and teams may move freely from one position to the next. Do I need to provide new pickleballs for each home match? As long as the balls are not cracked and are appropriate for where the match is being played (indoor/outdoor), you may reuse balls. During the regular season if we tie 6-6 with our opponent, do we need to play a match tiebreak? A match tiebreak is not needed during the regular season. Match tiebreaks for the pickleball league are only used during the playoff rounds and City Finals.
