Welcome to our Summer edition...

...which is packed full of family entertainment, activities, events and day’s out. There really is a lot going on in and around Wokingham this Summer, so where to start? Well, in addition to the shows, family fun days, outdoor cinemas, children’s sports, hobbies. holiday clubs and festivals, we also have an array of local people telling their stories and sharing experiences. What an absolutely amazing community and wealth of talent, inclusivity and diversity we have in our Borough, and it has been a privilege to meet and speak with so many people over the past few weeks and who are now among the many contributors and advertisers within this Summer edition of Wokingham Local magazine!

As the front cover states our main theme for this issue is ‘Summer Food’ and while we all love barbecue, there is so much more to offer over Summer, just ask resident butcher Charlie at Stefans. His pork roast with ‘crackle’ on page 27 is a winner any day of the week. Place your orders early and leave the preparation to him, as he says... “anyway you like it’’.  Award winning Indian Kitchen ‘Bombay Story’ has authentic Indian street food as well as fine dining and just the most innovative cocktails to go with, whilst you sit back and relax, enjoying the peace and tranquil views of Peach Place. Holme Grange Craft Village introduces food and drink from the artisan shops and crafters, not to mention the famous ‘Chocolate Cafe’ in the courtyard. Have you visited yet?  Then, for the children, our latest feature by Lavender Bakery ‘Ready, Steady, (KIDS) Bake’ and our strawberry ice-lollies, both with quick  and easy recipes which are perfect for the little ones to try, and not to mention taste delicious, both just rounding off the Summer Food feast. What’s not to love?

ROYAL BERKSHIRE

Royal Berkshire - The County was given the title of ‘Royal County’ by the Queen in 1958 in recognition of Berkshire’s royal links. Windsor Castle is probably the most popular attraction for visitors while locals appear to prefer the River Thames, Chilterns and Downs.

The Royal County of Berkshire has much to offer tourists, it makes an excellent base to explore London and the South East of England being under 40 miles from the centre of London, about 25 miles from Oxford, around 60 miles to Bath and much the same to Stratford-upon-Avon however you may well find that there is more than enough to entertain you within the county during your visit.

Popular Berkshire destinations

Windsor - Home to Windsor Castle, Windsor Racecourse, Windsor Great Park and The Savill Garden, and across the Thames Eton College. As well as the draw of the Royal Castle and associated parkland there is the nearby LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort, Theme Park rides and attractions and of course lots of LEGO®.

Newbury - This historic market town has the Newbury Racecourse, River Kennet, Kennet and Avon Canal, Shaw House, Donnington Castle, Greenham Common, Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre to visit and nearby Highclere Castle to visit.

Pangbourne - a popular area, located by the River Thames, full of character and the water meadows make an excellent picnic spot. Pangbourne is said

9 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY/AUGUST 2023

to have been the inspiration of many authors and novelists including Kenneth Grahame and Jerome K. Jerome. Close by is the National Trust run Basildon Park a popular attraction partly due to its use in the filming of Pride and Prejudice. Reading - Sitting on the junction of the River Thames the River Kennet, water activities are popular, especially at the Caversham Lakes Water Park. The county town, a modern town with history, an old market town with the ruined Reading Abbey (founded in 1121) and an array of Georgian and Victorian buildings. As a university town it has a vibrant social scene. For nature lovers there is the Dinton Pastures Country Park with over 300 acres, with hides for bird watching, fishing lakes, orienteering

course and walking trails, and for those needing some fresh air there are to the West the Wessex Downs and to the North the Chilterns Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty for walks, cycling or just to sit and enjoy the countryside. www.visitingberkshire.uk

PANGBOURNE

Close to Reading, Pangbourne, in West Berkshire, is located on the River Thames and is on the opposite bank of the river to Whitchurch-on-Thames, it marks the border with Oxfordshire.

The Pang flows through the centre of Pangbourne before joining the Thames. The Whitchurch Bridge connects the two villages and nearby is Whitchurch Lock which is only accessible by boat. Today it is a charming and quaint riverside village, full of character, with individual shops, a selection of restaurants, pubs and cafes, making it an ideal place to potter. Many visitors arrive on foot along the Thames Path National Trail or you can arrive by boat, or by train. Arriving by train, the first sight is of the fabulously painted underpass at Pangbourne train station, it features bees, honeycomb and wild flowers. This was the idea of Helen Stock, who works in the Berkshire station’s ticket office. She came up with the idea to mark her 20-year anniversary of working at the station. She is reported to have said: “I wanted to brighten up the place and make it a warm, happy, welcoming place.”

10 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY/AUGUST 2023

History shows that Pangbourne was a strategic crossing point of the Thames for over one thousand years, with the earliest records from AD 844 showing it as a grant of land to Bertwulf, the King of Mercia. The monarch is prominently depicted on the village sign. Its name derives from Paega a Saxon chief, who settled here, Pangbourne means ‘Paega’s People’s Stream’. In Norman times, it belonged to Reading Abbey.

Attractions and things to do near Pangbourne

Pangbourne Meadow is a beautiful area consisting of a big grassy meadow adjacent to the tow path, while further inland there is a large field and children’s play area, including toilets. The water meadows, are a popular spot for a picnic or a stroll. It’s also the site of the annual village fete, a wonderful English tradition, including the customary WI cake stall but also the more unusual Limbo dancing competition and Dragon Boat event!

Beale Wildlife Park at Lower Basildon, a Riverside park, home to many difference species of birds as well as goats and ponies. There are also picnic areas and other great facilities fo those with small children. https://bealepark.org.uk/

Pangbourne Toll Bridge – you can’t miss seeing this bridge of wrought iron lattice work, which links the two villages. Stop on the bridge to look upstream to the lock and admire the views of the church, mill and cottages of Whitchurch, ranged on the far side of the millpond.

Pangbourne College

A co-educational private day and boarding school located in Pangbourne, Berkshire. It is set in 230 acres, on a hill south-west of the village, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The college was founded by Sir Thomas Lane Devitt Bt. in 1917 as The Nautical College, Pangbourne with the purpose of training boys to become Merchant Navy officers. It became “Pangbourne College” in 1969 and while conforming to the general lines of a British independent boarding school, retains a distinctly nautical flavour; the pupils wear naval

uniform. The Nautical College, Pangbourne became “Pangbourne College”. This also saw a shift in emphasis to a stronger academic programme, and with a civilian headmaster to replace the former post of captain superintendent. Directors of studies were replaced by the post of second master. The current headmaster, Thomas Garnier, served in the Royal Navy before switching to a career in teaching. He taught physics and was a housemaster before becoming headmaster of Pangbourne College in 2005.

HIGHCLERE CASTLE

We go behind the scenes of the real Downton AbbeyHighclere Castle, in Newbury, on the Berkshire / Hampshire border.

Highclere Castle is set amidst 5,000 acres of spectacular parkland, designed for the 1st Earl of Carnarvon by the famous 18th century landscape gardener “Capability” Brown. There are six 18th century follies framing views from which to admire the landscape. For example, Jackdaw’s Castle on the East lawns provides a charming view to the Castle, the Etruscan Temple is a place in which to sit and admire the trees on Siddown Hill, whilst the Temple of Diana looks over the lake.

The parkland and gardens are framed by a collection of magnificent cedar trees, first imported into this country in the 18th century.

ABOUT THE CASTLE

The first written records of the estate date back to 749 when an Anglo-Saxon King granted the estate to the Bishops of Winchester. Bishop William of Wykeham built a beautiful medieval palace and gardens in the park. Later on, the palace was rebuilt as Highclere Place House in 1679 when it was

purchased by Sir Robert Sawyer, the direct ancestor of the current Earl of Carnarvon. In 1842, Sir Charles Barry, who also designed the Houses of Parliament, transformed Highclere House into the present day Highclere Castle.

During the First World War, Highclere Castle was converted into a hospital for wounded soldiers run by the 5th Countess of Carnarvon. Throughout the Second World War, Highclere Castle was home to children evacuated from London.

14 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY/AUGUST 2023

There are between 250 and 300 rooms in the Castle and organised Summer tours mean you can explore the main state rooms so familiar from “Downton Abbey”. You can see some of the bedrooms after which you will follow the stairs down to the cellars and old staff quarters where you will find the Egyptian Exhibition, celebrating the 5th Earl of Carnarvon’s discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun.

It has been a number of years now since the last series of Downton Abbey was broadcast, capturing more than 180 million viewers. You can visit Highclere Castle and relive every single scene, the iconic staircase, the Chateau of Jackdaws (were Lady Edith found herself so often) and the state dining room, where so many of the Dowager Countess’ wonderfully acerbic lines were delivered by the legendary Dame Maggie Smith.

You can take a look behind the scene at Highclere Castle with Lady Carnarvon’s blog, published on the website every Monday together with information on events, tours and talks all planned for the Summer, not to mention tasting Highclere Castle’s famous gin.

HIGHCLERE CASTLE GIN

With over 57 gold and platinum awards, Highclere Castle Gin is becoming one of the most delicious gins in the world from one of the most famous and

15 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY/AUGUST 2023

much loved homes in the entire world. It is of course the spirit you have been looking for! In real and fictional life, guests from the worlds of art, music and technology as well of course royalty have celebrated at many a fine weekend party. After all, what is a weekend without gin? Created in the oldest distillery in England and led from botanicals hand chosen from the castle’s extraordinary gardens. A traditional London Dry Gin produced in an antique copper still which dates back to the 1800s.

The recipe was meticulously developed by Lord and Lady Carnarvon over two years, experimenting with botanicals grown here on the Highclere Estate and was influenced by what is grown in the Orangery as well as the gardens. The taste and style of course begins with juniper at the heart of the gin, to which is added the touch of lavender inspired by the borders in the Monks’ Garden, followed by the citrus notes led by tiny intense oranges and then lime flower.

Colours you’ll l ve with Farrow & Ball paints

From classic Ammonite to stylish Hague Blue, plus a splash of India Yellow for the Summertime, here are the best picks...

Ammonite is Farrow and Ball’s most popular neutral. It’s neither too warm nor too cool, so will work in any room no matter what the natural light situation. It’s got a very subtle grey tone that you can bring out more if paired with a brighter white like All White but without that contrast, it just looks like a lovely soft white.

Of course, we all still love grey. An enduringly popular choice for stylish bedrooms and living rooms, it is an easy way to create a tranquil and inviting atmosphere. Pavilion Grey is a cool midtoned grey - neutral enough for any room, but with a distinctive edge. Pair up with a bright cool white like Blackened for a clean, simple look.

An archway is a beautiful architectural feature that feels oh-so-inviting in a grey living room. But, if you want to have some fun, why not paint the inside of it, in a contrasting color (such as yellow) to an add a kid-friendly color pop?

These are two paint colors for the living room that work in perfect harmony together. Abstract art, jewel velvet cushions and tactile footstools all add to relaxed and free-spirited vibe. The look is unstuffy, welcoming to all and provides the perfect place for play dates.

Down Pipe! Farrow & Ball describe this colour as ‘a dramatic lead grey’. Down Pipe is the best colour option for making a statement in the hallway or bedroom, but now finding its way into living rooms, home offices and dining spaces too. We love this colour in a kitchen, just pick the Wood & Metal finish and follow the F&B guide to how to paint kitchen cabinets for a dramatic update. Deep, dark grey-black has been an on-trend colour for quite a few years now,

and shows no sign of going out of fashion. A characterful alternative to light neutrals, it works brilliantly combined with off-whites or pastels.

Blue or black? Why choose if you can have a colour that occupies a perfectly balanced space in the middle? With its unique, rich tone, it is no wonder that Railings has become a bestseller. This colour works especially well for adding character to a study or dining room, as shown above. Why not use it on woodwork and doors, too, to up the contemporary appeal? We think this is one of the best paints for those looking for a dark option.

The most popular of all Farrow & Ball colours right now seems to be Hague Blue. Everyone seems to be painting walls, floor and kitchen cupboards in this strong deep dark blue. It has a slight green undertone which lends itself to rooms that don’t get much natural light, and it also works well in smaller rooms too. Team it with a fresh, light

WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY/AUGUST 2023 20
Railings Hague Blue Hague Blue India Yellow

A very popular choice for spaces with a little less natural light, Borrowed Light Blue has a shimmering, silvery quality that will lift darker rooms, especially if they are north-facing. We especially love it used in kitchens but also in nurseries and children’s rooms. Pair it with some warm, creamy whites to add extra softness to the space.

A popular colour choice, and not just for walls, a splash of India Yellow wouldn’t go amiss in your home come Summertime. It’ll certainly grab your guests’ attention, and it works wonders in naturally dark rooms. Whether you’re thinking of using it for a feature wall, to jazz up your flooring or revive some old-looking furniture, it’s a daring choice we think you’ll love. One of the best Farrow & Ball paints for those looking to step out of their comfort zone.

Tropical Fresh

Everything we love about summer style - pops of colour, fun prints and natural elements. For a refreshingly bold update, transform your bedroom with vibrant tropical wallpaper on a feature wall. Keep the space feeling soft and cosy with a grey fabric bed and touches of pink and green.

Bright & Airy

Put away the heavy drapes from winter and instead, use sheer curtains in the summer to let natural light fill your bedroom. For a light and breezy feel, choose white sheer curtains like Voile curtains. Pair them with lightweight blackout curtains or blinds for added privacy. Keep the look airy and bright with a white and neutral colour palette throughout the room.

Mellow Yellow

Layer an oak bed with yellow accents for summer. Summer is the perfect time to experiment with a zesty pop of colour like yellow. Start small with mustard yellow bedding to bring out the warmth of an oak bed. Accessorise with similar tones, like natural wooden frames and a woven rug, to get a relaxing space.

ON BROAD STREET by

A little over 2 years ago now, I spent ‘5 minutes with’ the team at CHALK - Ben, David and Craig, and, as they are quite literally ‘over the road’ from my offices on Broad Street I thought it was time that Wokingham Local caught up with them again and asked the question ‘What has the last 2 years been like for the team behind CHALK?

The extremely charismatic Ben, who is front of house at CHALK, explained that it has been a very busy time with Jacob joining the team, who now runs the Grasshopper bar which is their cocktail bar just around the corner on Rose Street. At Wokingham Local we have held our social networking events there this year, which I have to say have been fantastically hosted by Jacob, Ben and their team. Grasshopper goes from strength to strength and Ben explains that there will be more evenings of entertainment held there over the Summer months, so keep an eye on their website for further informationwww.grasshopperbar.co.uk

26 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY/AUGUST 2023

With chefs David and Craig at the helm, serving exciting menus from breakfasts all the way through to dinner, and private dining menus also available, I asked Ben “With all the competition which is so prevalent in Wokingham town centre, what is it that keeps CHALK so busy and obviously very popular with locals and visitors alike?’’

“There is always a warm and friendly welcome at CHALK from every member of our team”, Ben explains, with a big smile on his face. He really is one of the happiest restaurateurs I have ever known, so I can totally see why his guests return time after time. “We are currently recruiting and so we will be expanding our friendly team very soon, plus, our menus are built around fresh food which results in fresh and appetising dishes that our guests really enjoy,’’ he goes on to say, and there will be a Summer menu out soon, so do also keep an eye on the website for CHALK on Broad Street. www.chalkrestaurants.com

Another addition to the CHALK family is CHALK in the park, which the team added to

their growing portfolio recently, located on Ively Road, Farnborough, just a few metres from the car park for Southwood Country Park, and on the edge of the park itself, CHALK in the Park is the perfect place for quality coffee, pastries and baked goods, lunch, afternoon get- togethers, long, cool summer drinks and more. Ben invites his guests old and new to feel free to drop in when visiting the park – or just drop in regardless! There will always be the signature warm welcome and delicious fresh food on the menu. www.chalkfarnborough.com

When I ask Ben ‘what’s next?’ for the team behind CHALK, he is emphatic that there is quite enough going on for this year at least, but with so much progress and expansion in the last 2 years I would say he has a winning formula, so “watch this space!’’

To the pan, add broth, butter, garlic, and lemon slices and cook until chicken is cooked through and sauce has reduced slightly, approx 3 minutes.

Step 4

Spoon sauce on top of chicken and garnish with parsley.

THE PERFECT Pork Roast

WITH ‘CRACKLE’

A weekend pork roast is easy to cook with minimal steps, but to get a perfect, golden crackle makes it worth waiting every minute for. Ask Charlie for the best cut of boneless pork, and the end results will be tender and juicy on the inside, while a mouthwatering crackle cooks on the outside. Charlie can score the rind for you, and once home pat it dry and leave it in the fridge for an hour uncovered, so that the rind can dry out.

How do I get good crackling... you ask?

Firstly, rub the rind with 2 tablespoons of cooking oil and one tablespoon of coarse sea salt, and rub it in really well. Season the underside of the joint also. Then, in a preheated oven, to 230’c (210 for a fan oven) blast it with high heat for 45-50 minutes. The crackle will bubble and crackle up in that time. The heat is then reduced to 180’c – 160 fan, to allow time to cook the meat underneath, allowing 30 mins for every 450g of pork for a medium cooked joint. After that, blast it again on high heat for an additional 10 minutes to get it the same golden colour you see here. Do not baste the joint whilst cooking, and once it is done, rest for a minimum of 15 minutes and ensure the juices run clear.

Potato salad, coleslaw and fresh greens are all delicious accompaniments to this flavoursome perfect pork roast with ‘crackle’!

Patatas Bravas

It’s no secret that food and culture go hand in hand. A country’s traditional dish can tell you a lot about it, and Patatas Bravas tells us that Spain makes delicious yet light food.

Patatas Bravas is a traditional Spanish tapas that has been an integral part of its cuisine for centuries. Its main ingredients are crispy fried potatoes and a spicy, light sauce on top. We bet your stomachs are growling just like ours are right now! So, let’s get to making them.

The Potatoes

Cut 4 large potatoes into two centimeter chunks. Afterward, fry them in extra virgin olive oil on the lowest heat possible just till they start getting a bit of color. Then remove the fried potatoes from the pan, and put them in the fridge to cool down. After a couple of minutes, take the potatoes out and turn up the heat as high as possible. Fry the potatoes till they’re golden brown and crispy.

The Bravas Sauce

There are many variations for the Bravas sauce across Spain, but for the most part, this is the original Bravas sauce recipe made in Madrid.

2 teaspoons of white vinegar | 2 teaspoons of chili powder | ¾ teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper

2 tablespoons of tomato paste | ½ cup of water

To the tomato sauce, add the white vinegar, chili powder, and cayenne pepper and mix them well. Next, add the water, so the bravas sauce isn’t too thick. Then, blend the sauce until it’s silky-smooth. Pour the Bravas sauce over the crispy fried Spanish potatoes and garnish with some freshly chopped coriander (if liked) and salt.

Our second Cocktail Chat in April, again hosted by the team at Grasshopper cocktail bar on Rose Street, was photographed by brand photographer Leanne Du Plessis - a BIG thank you to her for these amazing images of everyone having a great time.  There were too many attendees to mention them all individually here, however, I would like to thank our sponsor - Rory of Pratts Pods, and also a few of our guest speakers, including Abbie of ClickStyle, Ghizlane of Walfinch homecare, and the very talented and entertaining Chris of Therapycise. It was again, another fantastic evening, so much so, that I am constantly being asked when we will be hosting another. I have the privilege of announcing that we will be at the Grange Chocolate Café at Holme Grange Craft Village on the evening of the 8th of September, and a limited number of tickets are available to purchase on the ‘events’ page of our website - https://www.wokinghamlocal.co.uk/events Everyone’s welcome, you don’t have to be a contributor or advertiser with the magazine, just come along with a view to having an interest in our Wokingham Local business community, and having a fun, friendly, and great social evening with ‘like minded’ people - who knows where it will lead?  Plus, there is a complimentary glass of fizz upon arrival and canapés and refreshments (including cocktails of course) available throughout the evening.

Call the: PLUMBER

Despite working long hours and regular weekends, nearly three-quarters of tradespeople in the United Kingdom are satisfied with their jobs. According to a recent poll, and 72 % of respondents described themselves as ‘happy’ or very happy in their current position, with 70 % saying they would recommend their job or position to others.

In this issue, we put the ‘Spotlight’ on plumbers. “If in doubt - call your local plumber out!’’ It’s official: Plumbers are the happiest people on the planet. According to the findings of Boundless’ survey, plumbers were by far the happiest of all those surveyed, with an overwhelming majority expressing satisfaction with their jobs. 55% of plumbers stated that they were “extremely happy” in their lives, while not a single plumber stated that they were unhappy in their jobs. Among the hierarchy of tradespersons plumbers are considered the ‘top of the pile’ and all consider that plumbing is a lucrative trade. The reason being, that demand is always high and it’s very resistant to economic downturns. Why? Because virtually every building

will need a water system installed, repaired or maintained at some point.

Why become a plumber?

We ask training provider ‘Trade Up’

“The money and job security are great draws for those considering training to be a plumber. But plumbing is also a trade with high job satisfaction. You’ll meet plenty of people throughout the day, not to mention be the hero when an emergency call out is needed. Plumbers also keep people safe, providing drinking water and effective wastewater systems across the country. Remember you don’t have to go down the domestic route – you could work on municipal infrastructure for local authorities or even use your knowledge to help businesses design new plumbing products. In short, it’s a respected profession with huge potential. Since plumbing issues can be very complex, it will also give you the joy and satisfaction to figure out the cause and fix the problem. It requires a lot of creativity and ingenuity when you work on installing a complete plumbing system. So, yes, it is definitely a career worth considering’’ they say

40 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY/AUGUST 2023
Part 1 of our new feature, showcasing ‘Our Wokingham Local Tradespeople’

What do plumbers do?

Plumbers install and repair pipes and fixtures that carry water, gas, or other fluids in homes and businesses. They also maintain plumbing fixtures like bathtubs and toilets and appliances such as dishwashers or heating systems. Common duties of a plumber include: Installing plumbing fixtures and water and gas pipes; inspecting and testing plumbing equipment like pressure gauges to ensure they work correctly and troubleshooting plumbing fixtures and making corrections when needed. One of the most difficult things about being a plumber is the physical demands of the job. Plumbers often need to work in tight spaces, such as crawl spaces and attics, and may need to lift and maneuver heavy pipes and equipment.

When to call a plumber

The most common reason for a plumber to be called out is due to leaking pipes and taps. This may not seem as dramatic compared with

a burst pipe or boiler, but it’s just as important that you resolve them if they’re occurring on your property. Even small leaks can cause major damage over time. Those leaks can cause significant structural damage to your home and its foundation, plus you may accrue a big water bill if it is running consistently. You should also be aware of a few special cases. If you have cold water but no hot water, it may be a heater issue. If water works on one floor of your home but not another, you could be experiencing a pressure problem that is easy to remedy with the right equipment. You have no hot water? It’s normal not to have any hot water after the kids take an hour-long shower, but it’s not okay if it takes a few hours for water to warm up no matter what. You know it’s time to call a plumber about your water heater if you experience repeated problems and there never seems to be enough hot water.

So, if in doubt - call your local plumber out!

THE VEGETABLE GARDEN

Summer is the height of the growing season when the vegetable garden comes into its own. While some vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, and cauliflower prefer the cooler temperatures of spring and autumn, others such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers need hotter weather in order to thrive.

Here are the best summer vegetables to grow, along with some tips to get you started.

TOMATOES

These favourite vegetables require months of warm weather to produce a bountiful harvest and rich soil and fertilizer to thrive. Choose a sunny site and provide regular water and supplemental fertilizer for high yields. Transplant outdoors when nighttime temperatures are at least 55 degrees F. Trellis, cage, or stake to support fruits.

PEPPERS

Because of the long growing time, plants will need to be started indoors or purchased as nursery starts. Plant outdoors when nighttime temperatures are consistently 60 degrees F or above. Peppers thrive in a sunny site with rich well-draining soil. Add an all-purpose fertilizer formulated for vegetables to the soil on planting and keep plants moist. Stake or cage to support the weight of the fruit.

BERRIES

Although not vegetables, berries are a must-have addition to any edible landscape. Choose varieties that produce fruit at different times during the

42 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY/AUGUST 2023

can be grown in containers. Blueberries need at least two plants for cross pollination, while other types are self-pollinating. Make sure to research cultural needs for each type. Plant in full sun, keep well watered during summer and cover with bird netting when berries start to ripen.

CUCUMBER

A favorite crunchy addition to salads, as well as for snacking or pickling. Wait to direct sow seeds until the soil warms up to 60-70 degrees F. Train on a fence or trellis, or allow them plenty of room to sprawl. Make sure plants receive regular water

to keep fruit from becoming bitter or misshapen. Harvest frequently to encourage new fruit.

BEANS

Beans are one of the best sources of vegetative protein. Beyond the ever-popular green beans, there are other types to grow, including black, pinto, lima, and fava beans. Direct sow seed outdoors when soil temperature reaches 60 degrees F and air temperature is 65 to 85 degrees F. Pole beans can be harvested from mid-summer into autumn, while bush types can be sown every couple of weeks throughout summer. Utilise space-saving trellises and containers to maximize production.

MELONS

Melons need lots of heat, water, rich soil, and fertilizer to develop succulent fruit. Choose a south-facing site that receives reflected heat and allow plenty of room for vines to sprawl. Wait to sow seeds until soil temperature is 65-70 degrees F, or plant from nursery starts. Use heat-enhancing methods such as a cloche or black plastic to warm the soil and speed plant growth.

OKRA

A staple in Southern cuisines, okra is used to thicken soups, stews, and Creole gumbo. It thrives in warmer regions due to its extreme

tolerance to heat and drought. Edible seed pods are produced in just 50-60 days from germination. Directly sow seeds outdoors in rich, well-draining soil when soil temperature reaches 65-70 degrees F. Okra produces better yields with regular water. Harvest a few days after flowering when pods are still small.

SUMMER SQUASH

Unlike winter squash, summer squash do not store well and are best eaten fresh. Choose a sunny site with rich, well-draining soil. Plant in rows or hills and direct sow seeds when soil temperature reaches 70 degrees F. Plants need 1 - 2 inches of water per

week. Use drip irrigation to reduce the risk of foliar disease. Male flowers are followed by female flowers that bear fruit.

AUBERGINE

Plant during the heat of summer. In cooler climates, use heat-enhancing methods such as a cloche or black plastic mulch to warm the soil and speed growth. Provide sun, rich soil, and regular water. Harvest fruits when they are young.

GREENS

Greens are normally a cool weather crop. Choose varieties such as Malabar spinach and New Zealand spinach that thrive in heat. Mustard, collards, and Swiss chard are both heat and cold tolerant. Even regular lettuce can be grown during the heat of summer when given shade and plenty of water. Re-sow every couple of weeks and harvest when leaves are young. Germination rate decreases when soil temperature exceeds 80-85 degrees F. Heat-resistant lettuce varieties include ‘Jericho’, ‘Red Sails’, and ‘Buttercrunch’.

PEAS

Peas are normally a cool weather crop but can be replanted in mid to late summer. To calculate the best time to plant, determine your average first frost date, subtract the days to maturity listed on the seed packet, and allow an extra week for germination. Seeds can be soaked in water overnight to speed germination. Shade seedlings from sun during the day and mulch with organic matter to reduce soil temperature. Keep plants well watered.

SWEET POTATOES

A rich source of beta-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin C, fiber, and trace minerals. Tropical in origin, they need several months of heat to thrive. Once soil temperature reaches at least 60 degrees F, plant tuber slips in a sunny site with rich, well-draining soil. Keep moist with 1 inch of water per week. Cease watering 2 to 3 weeks before harvesting when foliage begins to turn yellow.

6 SUMMER VEGETABLE GROWING TIPS

Grow regionally: Pick varieties that will do well in your particular area. If your growing season is shorter, select types that mature faster. For hotter climates, select heat-tolerant varieties.

Mulch: Spread a 1- to 2-inch layer of compost or other organic matter around plants. This will help conserve water, suppress weeds, and cool soil temperatures.

Watering: Irrigate plants in the morning to reduce evaporation and avoid foliar diseases. Drip irrigation helps conserve water and reduces disease due to overhead watering. Proper watering is especially crucial when fruits are forming.

Provide shade: Crops such as greens, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, and beets benefit from partial shade during the hottest part of the day, particularly in warmer climates. Plant in a site that receives protection from hot afternoon sun or use a shade cloth.

Plant successively: Re-sow crops such as bush beans, beets, and lettuce every couple of weeks throughout the summer for continuous harvest. Start fall crops in mid to late summer.

Harvest: Pick crops early or late in the day. Produce will stay crisper, fresher and more flavorful than vegetables harvested during the heat of the day.

TOMATILLOS

These tart fruits are a staple ingredient in Mexican cuisine, used to make green salsa or enchilada verde sauce. Tomatillos are especially cold-sensitive, preferring soil temperatures of 70-80 degrees F. Seed indoors 4 weeks before your last frost date or purchase nursery-grown plants. Most varieties take 75-100 days to mature. Make sure to grow two or more plants for successful cross-pollination.

GARDEN Frolics

That time of year... at last!

This last couple of weeks, I am seeing A LOT of the same thing and hearing A LOT of the same reasons... low back aches and pains because you are back in the garden and yikes, there’s a lot to do and with the current weather, a lot to keep on top of. I thought, ah ha! I will put together a little piece with my top tips on how to protect your back in the garden and what a great reason to start up my newsletters again!

1. Preparation is key

You know! I know! Let’s start with the basics though! Firstly, make sure that your clothing doesn’t restrict you so you can bend and twist in those hard to reach areas. Check your shoes give you enough support and won’t mean you are constantly having to grip them with your toes.

2. This is what we all forget, including me... gardening is exercise! So ensure that you are warming up. remember, a warm up means short and quick, not long slow deep stretches, you can save that for later!

3. Using a ladder

When using a ladder or steps, make sure you are always facing it, keeping your shoulders, hips and knees pointing in the same direction. Rather than leaning or reaching, move the ladder or step regularly to keep up with where you are. Any kind of ladder must be firmly and safely planted in position and, if possible, have someone else there to keep an eye on things.

4. Invest in tech

Controversial, I know but if you don’t much care for those fine lines on your garden lawn and care more for your tan lines then get a robot mower!

5. Pace yourself

Tempting as it may be with the current changeable weather, do not go hell for leather to get the job

done and then struggle to get out of bed the next day. Gardening is instantly gratifying, focus on one job at a time, sit back and enjoy it. Try and plan your jobs so that you have more time for bigger jobs and potentially able to recruit help!

46 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JULY/AUGUST 2023

6. Work smarter, not harder

To avoid constantly bending over, consider using elevated planters. If your garden is on ground

level, you can buy a garden kneeler that can help take some of the strain off your body, back, and knees. Using a caddy can also help you easily carry around all your gardening tools rather than lifting them. If you’re someone with wrist pain, investing in compression braces can help ease the pain and thwart injuries.

Crazy, I know but if you are digging or hedging, do make sure that you swap feet because using the same leg continuously is a sure fire way of hurting your back!

Finally...

Don’t forget to cool down after you have finished, even if it’s after a cup of tea, it still helps.

If you are still struggling or suffering after gardening, it might be time to get yourself checked out. Call the clinic on 01628 879580 or you can email us info@berksclinic.co.uk Laura and the team at Berkshire Health Clinic.

I WANT TO USE MY VOICE

Two months after turning 33, I sat in the consultant’s office and heard the words ‘that little lump, is actually breast cancer’. Life as I knew it seemed to freeze and I was transported to what felt like another world.

Over the next 12 months, I underwent surgeries, hormone treatments, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. I continue to receive endocrine treatments and biyearly infusions for at least another 4.5 years, to reduce my risk for the future.

Up until the day of my diagnosis, I’d been working on finding new medicines for cancer patients, as a Global Senior Clinical Trial Manager; my job of the last 12 years. Suddenly, I was the patient. I always believed it was important for patients to advocate for themselves and for their voices to be empowered. Receiving my own diagnosis reinforced this.

There was no one more invested in my health than me, so I dealt with my diagnosis by researching and being proactive in my treatment plan. This gave me a sense of control in the unpredictability of it all. Every choice and treatment had potentially lifechanging risks and consequences. Knowing I had made informed choices at each step of the way, helped me make peace with these decisions.

From my research, I realised that only 4% of breast cancers are diagnosed in women under 40, and at 33 my risk was less than half a percent. According to statistics, I had a lower-than-average risk of getting breast cancer for someone my age, as I had no risk factors, such as family history, and was very health

and fitness conscious. I rarely checked myself and it was just by chance that I came across a lump a few weeks earlier.

I discovered that young age was negatively associated with good prognosis in breast cancer, particularly for under 35s. As most breast cancers are diagnosed in women over 50, the majority of research to help inform decision-making is tailored to this age group. It was challenging weighing up the pros and cons of treatments, without knowing how much it would benefit me as an individual. I was against the odds in getting cancer, so I decided that I would carve my own path.

As a qualified Personal Performance and NLP Coach and reiki practitioner, I merged the best of my medical research knowledge and coaching and wellness knowledge. I spoke to oncology professors and experts in integrative oncology and naturopathic nutrition, as I wanted to formulate a plan personal to me, that would give me the best chance of success. Alongside traditional treatments, I integrated meditation, dietary approaches, including fasting, and alternative therapies, such as 3-weekly mistletoe injections, to help to support my body and enhance the benefits of treatment.

Getting a diagnosis can floor you, initially I would wake up every morning with a mixture of dread, grief, fear and anxiety about the future. However, I try to be more present in the moment, feel acceptance and have a positive focus by rebuilding my health and living life purposefully.

I want to use my voice, of the researcher and the patient, where my two worlds have met, to raise awareness and further research, so that breast cancer outcomes can be just as good for younger women. I want to encourage self-checking and being aware of what is normal for your body, especially in younger women and men, where breast cancer is rarer and where there is no nationwide screening.

In April 2023, I took part in the Breast Cancer Now fashion show at the Science Museum, alongside 23 other models living with or beyond breast cancer. It was an amazing event and electric atmosphere with all our family and friends and supporters of the charity. It was an honour to be asked to be the model

speaker and to share my story, which I delivered wearing an iconic Dame Zandra Rhodes dress, whilst she was watching in the audience! I feel proud that my speech collectively reached over 52,000 people in the audience and across live stream!

If sharing my breast cancer journey prompts one person to check themselves or to seek medical help for something unusual, then I feel I’ve made a small difference.

I have always struggled with self-belief. When I was a teenager, I was ambitious and wide eyed, but this soon got suppressed by the traditional system in which I studied Indian classical dance. My enthusiasm and curiosity got misunderstood for arrogance and so I was tamed to tone it down. As the years went on, I became a better dancer but a more shy, selfconscious person. I went from being blindly confident to fearfully timid.

As I got older my emotions only became harder to manage and the more success I achieved, the more I lost another layer of confidence and self-belief. I was cautious of not letting my ego get in the way, as I had seen others in my industry do. Having learnt with renowned teachers and watched world class performers, of whom I couldn’t see anything except a bubble of ego surrounding them.

I tried to be the opposite of that; pushing myself as down to Earth as I could, wanting to be known for my humility, until I realised even that desire in itself was a subtle form of ego. I would put 100% into everything I do, only to come away feeling doubt and wondering if I had done enough.

When it came to branching out into other areas away from dance, that lack of self-belief followed. Like a silent companion lingering away in the background, reminding me that ‘I am not enough’. Occasionally I would attempt to ‘face the fear’ by

taking on a challenging situation and even feeling a sense of accomplishment, before being once again knocked down by someone’s negative comment or feedback. It was a constant rollercoaster of selfdoubt, which held me back from being true to my work. It remained present in everything I embarked on, until I discovered the root cause.

It was through my introduction to Reiki healing that I discovered the chakras (energy channels). I learnt specifically that it was my solar plexus holding me back, the radiant yellow power centre responsible for one’s self esteem. Being aware of this and meditating on it regularly allowed me to ‘let go’. Let go of my desire to be humble and let go of my desire to be confident. Instead, I focussed on simply being me. Do I have self-belief now? Well believe it or not, there are still days where I doubt myself for a fleeting moment but then I swiftly move on. I remain open minded, curious, and willing to learn. I make mistakes, but I am ready to put my hands up and say I could have done that better. When I teach, mentor or coach I feel as though I am on a journey with my student or client. I no longer see myself as the one who needs to have all the answers. When they achieve success, it’s their success not my ego’s. Equally, when they do not get the desired results, it’s because they’re not ready, not due to anything I am lacking.

I wish I could go back to my younger self and tell her that she IS enough. I wish to embrace her and say “you are going to do good in the world”. Perhaps by now she would have done more had she heard those words. Or perhaps that process of feeling small was a subtle way to magnify her...Time will tell, for now I am not focussed on having self-belief or ego - I am just being authentically me.

RORY,

IS REFURBISHED REALLY AS GOOD AS NEW?

“A refurbished device was either pre-owned or used as a display item. However, refurbished products go through the same testing process as new devices do, so any defect is found and repaired, and any faulty part is replaced. They work as well as new products but have a discounted price because of their refurb tag.

Here at Pratts Pods we are proud to announce that we are Berkshire’s only Apple certified independent repair provider, using only genuine parts and making sure every device is thoroughly tested, which means that customers receive rock solid guarantees, so yes, it really is as good as new.
