Actually, believe it or not, I’m enjoying the role as editor of your Newsletter. And so, Christmas is once again upon us. Can I say thank you for your support in sending information to me. From the President Dear Members, This past year has been very good for the association, showing how resilient we are. Everyone’s strength and determination mean we are nearly back to where we were before the pandemic, which I’m sure you will agree is amazing. I want to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate all the staff for believing we could achieve this, and a special mention goes to you, the members, for your perseverance. Well done! In particular, I would like to thank all the Examiners and the Teachers for their hard work with the examinations and competitions. BTDA AGM

It was great to see our members at the AGM. The day commenced with the annual meeting and included reports from the Accountants, BTDA Trustees, LCPA, Head Examiners, The General Secretary and President of BTDA. Michelle Hankinson was presented as a New Examiner. Thank you for attending! “It was a great day, with lots of good information to take away. The venue was beautiful, with lots of natural light. Lovely to catch up with other teachers.” Gail Nevitt

“First time in the new venue, and I must say what a beautiful setting for our day. I found the whole day from beginning to end very informative, from Miss Kathleen’s ballet to Miss Emma’s modern and everything in between, all presented very professionally. The table settings were very good, and ours was a very varied age group, giving all the topics a view from all angles. But, for me, the thing I like most about the whole day is catching up with the other teachers, hearing about what everyone’s been up to and how their schools are doing, chatting with old friends, and making new ones. So, for anyone who thinks it’s just speeches and accounts, you’d be very wrong. It’s so much more.” Debbie Corker

“This year, the AGM was held in a new setting at Winstanley House in Leicester. The venue was lovely and made a welcoming change. I had missed the last few years, so I really liked how we were put onto tables with teachers that I didn’t know, and it was an excellent way of getting to know people and comparing notes. One thing I had asked about was bringing in a contemporary section to the festival, as we have many requests for this in our area, and we all got a chance to voice any views or concerns. The lunch was lovely, and then we moved on to an informative afternoon of individual subjects.” Natalie Whitfield

“This year’s British Theatre Dance Association Annual General Meeting was held at Winstanley House Leicester, a different venue found to be accommodating and homely. It was set on lovely grounds, had plentiful parking, and, luckily, had nice summer weather. Once the formal part of the AGM was completed, there were round-table discussions focusing on topical issues related to our dance work, from which feedback was found to be very helpful in informing the continuous development of BTDA. Members found these discussions very valuable. Helen impressed us all with her presentation of how examination results are standardised. After lunch there was a presentation of teaching and learning points related to the programmes of study for Classical Ballet, Tap, Modern Jazz, and Lyrical; it was impressive seeing teachers making copious notes, often on their iPads. This was followed by the presentation of Scholarship Dances for Ballet, Tap, and Modern Jazz, which impressed us all. It was good to see the large numbers of teachers present, some of whom had travelled a considerable distance. Thank you to all of them; BTDA certainly leads the way!” Ivor James

“The BTDA AGM 2023 in September was a successful day that helped inform teachers of important updates. It was excellent as an Assistant Teacher to see so many others who share a similar passion for educating the next generation of dancers and sharing ideas in our initial around-the-table discussions. I have just completed my Assistant Teaching Qualification, which was very informative. Each core discipline had a slot to discuss changes/clarifications to the programme of Study, and this was very helpful in ensuring that our students had the correct information when entering their examinations. The new venue was excellent. It had lovely facilities and everything we needed for a successful weekend of dance.” Louisa Chadwick

Examiners scribe… In this issue, we asked Pam Charter, Kathleen Davis, and Yvonne Novelli, three of our senior examiners, to give us an insight into their longstanding careers.

PAM CHATER

Head Examiner General Graded Qualifications Hello everyone. Here, I’ll offer an insight into how my dance journey began. I trained with Sylvia Bird Dance School in Coventry. I had a very in-depth training, with AAD being our syllabus. Many years later, I went into partnership to teach, which sadly didn’t work out, but during this time, I went to the first BTDA meeting and being very impressed, I joined up; my membership number is 34. My partnership dissolved, and then in 1977 (being heavily pregnant), I started the Chater Dance Academy. At this time, I met Barbara Wood; we became firm friends and still are. We both started going over to Miss Ann’s studio for weekly classes to take our then Intermediate dance exams and worked through all the Choreography exams, ending with a full show. Miss Ann was a hard taskmaster (as I am sure you can all imagine), and after a few lessons, we both agreed we would not go anymore as we were feeling very deflated! However, I said the next week, let’s give her one more chance, so we did and never looked back. My school started to flourish, and Miss Ann gave me lots of help and guidance, which I will always be grateful for. I introduced BTDA exams to all my students. We then started on the comp scene, entering numerous comps 10

and starting to do very well on the medal ladder. After a few years, I decided to become an examiner. Fortunately, I went through the correct channels, passed all the criteria, and started to Examine. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and still do. I was then asked to become the Artistic Director for Acrobatics (a subject which I was particularly passionate about). In my time as the Head of Acro, I would like to think I helped many teachers, young and old, explore this subject within their schools and take it up on their timetable. After almost 25 years, I felt it was the right time to pass this role on, which I did in September of 2023. I was appointed head Examiner for all the Graded Exams 1-8. I was to follow in Barbara Wood’s steps, as she had officially retired (a hard act to follow). I still enjoy this role, and most of all, I still thoroughly enjoy being a BTDA Examiner. I have met so many lovely people over the years and hope to continue to do so. My career has been very rewarding, obviously ups and downs, but far more positives than negatives. The motto of BTDA is that we lead the way; that is very true, and I hope we do for many years to come. As I said, after the pandemic, we chose to either sink or swim; most of us swam, so if you have overcome that, you can overcome anything. Just believe in yourself, dream big, and don’t give up. KATHLEEN DAVIS

Head Of Vocational Examinations Where did my dance journey start for me? Well, like many of you, it was at my local dance school. Not because I had a passion for dance but for medical reasons on the advice of a doctor. Little did I or my parents realise how much this first Saturday tap class would form the foundations of the life that followed. Performance was a large part of this school’s curricula, and I would be out performing at least once a week in local North East Venues. As the years progressed, my teacher, June Moore, who remained a lifelong friend for the rest of her life, suggested I move to a more professional school. She set up a meeting for me at the prestigious Ethel Hardy School of Dance — the leading school in the North-East at that time. From there, I competed in Competitions all over England, including the famous Sunshine Competitions. I won in many dance styles and disciplines and became the ultimate ‘comp dancer’. However, my first school’s performance element was deeply rooted in me and would soon surface. While studying for my A levels, I danced in a local panto as a professional dancer. After one performance, a gentleman who was in the audience asked to see me. It turned out he was an agent from Jersey offering me a six-month contract. I was also offered a place to start at the London College of Dance and Drama in September. Great – sorted – I would do the summer season, then go to dance college. It wasn’t to be! While performing in Cabaret in Jersey, I was offered a further contract to Germany. I accepted and never went to dance college, but I was also never out of work. I went from Cabaret to television to theatre, travelled the world, and loved every minute. After many successful years, I decided it was time to return home and began teaching competition routines at a local dance school. This led to me eventually opening my own school. My love and passion, however, was still in the theatre where it all began. I WINTER 2023

developed my own youth company with my partner Ben and learned how to direct and create light shows. I worked as the resident Pantomime choreographer at the Sunderland Empire for over ten years. My pupils participate in many professional productions, and to this day, I still provide one of the teams of juvenile dancers for the panto season. During my early years as a teacher, I began to look for a more modern and up-to-date teaching qualification. I attended a BTDA meeting and was immediately hooked on the Modern work. I became a BTDA teacher, then an examiner, then a senior examiner and now Head of Vocational Examinations, which is where I am today. I have always remembered my roots — June Moore, Ethel Hardy, Ben Body, Colin Angus and, of course, Miss Ann Oliver, who have all played a significant part in what I consider a very successful career. YVONNE NOVELLI

Senior Examiner for Lower Grade/Auxiliary Examinations & Performance Awards My dance journey started at age two at Shirley Thompson’s dance school. Apparently, I would sit in everybody’s way at the studio door, watching my six-year-old sister dance. Eventually, I was invited to join the class, much to my sister’s disgust. Our mum inspired us to work hard and achieve our best, making our beautiful costumes and working three jobs to pay for our training. I remained at Shirley Thompson’s to complete my Associates with IDTA. However, I had to take time out to care for my beautiful mum, who sadly died from cancer, leaving a big hole in my heart. I competed in my final competitions at Easter 1964. The adjudicator was Peggy Archer, who called me forward in the Song and Dance Section. I didn’t get placed, but her exact words were, “My dear, you can’t sing, but my goodness, you can sell it” (quite right; I still can’t sing!). At 15, I was part of a group called ‘The Five Lovelies’ performing at the first cabaret venue in Birmingham, La Reserve in Sutton Coldfield. We danced three shows a night for ten shillings a week! It was here that I later met my husband, Lorenzo. We married in 1965, had two children, and had guardianship of my younger sister. Lorenzo encouraged me to open my own school, Novelli Stage School, starting on a Saturday morning and gradually growing to six days a week. I eventually moved from hiring church halls to hiring a bespoke dance studio. I was one of the original members of BTDA and taught all the disciplines from Preparatory to Advanced. My students also participated in the first BTDA dance competition in Houghton on the Hill, Leicestershire. I was given the opportunity to become an examiner in the early 1970s. In the 1980s, I started the BTDA Sutton 12

Coldfield Area dance competition and later organised Championship Heats and Scholarships. In the early 2000s, I became the Artistic Head of Greek. Lorenzo was always by my side at all the shows and competitions I organised. Sadly, he died suddenly in 2008, and I felt all my confidence drain away. Eventually, my family, loyal friends, BTDA colleagues, and parents from the school all helped me carry on with my teaching and examining. Since then, I’ve examined across the UK and the world. I’ve also adjudicated competitions across the UK. I’ve been involved in the accreditation and standardisation process for BTDA-regulated qualifications and appointed Head Examiner of Lower Grades, Auxiliary and Performance Awards. Former students of mine have become teachers. Laura Mercer achieved her Diploma from LCPA, appeared at Disneyland Paris and is a BTDA Principal Registered Teacher. Niki Grainger is also a BTDA Principal Registered Teacher. Miss Laura and Miss Niki are now successfully running Novelli Stage School. It is in very good hands. I’m very proud to have been a part of BTDA from the start to where we stand today. I’m also very grateful to have had the chance to travel and examine in New Zealand, China, Dubai, Malta, Portugal, Ireland and all over the UK. I’ve met many lovely people and witnessed so much hard work and talent. Thank you, BTDA, for every opportunity you have given me. After all these years, you still lead the way! OBITUARIES

September the 9th was a sad day to hear a valued, long-standing member of the British Theatre Dance Association passed away, Miss Karen Oswin (Price). A look back into Miss Karen’s earlier life, she founded the Goscote Dance School in 1985 with a huge passion for teaching and a love for dance. She possessed an incredible talent for choreography, could connect amazingly with her students and was a beautiful, elegant, and strong dancer herself. She has touched the hearts of so many people over the almost 40 years of having her school, individually loved each one of the children like her own, and didn’t keep her talents to just teaching dancing, but life lessons, self-confidence and even things like the periodic table! Miss Karen’s aspirations for Goscote Dance will live on through her daughter, best friend, and business partner, Miss Megan, who puts love, companionship, and hard work at the forefront of her teaching. The spirit, the drive, and the Goscote family will continue to live on. MISS KAREN 4 February 1966–9 September 2023

Miss Heather Fitchett an esteemed BTDA Examiner and an active member of the Classical Ballet Artistic Group passed away on Sunday 3 December 2023. Her knowledge and dedication to both dance and in particular BTDA was invaluable and she will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with the family and all the past and present students at the Fitchett Proll Dance School.

Around the schools News and reports from dance schools and academies

ROTHERHAM DANCE CENTRE — APPRECIATION FROM A PARENT TO A TEACHER

Oh, where do I start? My son, Joseph, is now 15 and happens to be autistic and has learning disabilities. But from a very young age it was obvious he had a love of music, dance and very perceptive of beat and rhythm. After a failed attempt at a franchised drama school when he was seven, we tried a small local dance school. Whilst they’d had young people with disabilities before, they’d not really had a Joseph! It took a while for them and him to get used to everything. We all have a different style of learning, don’t we? His learning style seemed to be to not even look at what was going on and then miraculously know the routine from start to finish weeks later and before anyone else. He started with jazz and progressed to tap, gym and more recently musical theatre. He has this look of pure joy when he arrives on stage. He struggles with basic comprehension of the world around him but perfects his dance routines to the joy of everyone who watches. He’s gone from being the boy who cannot stand in his line/spot to the one still

shining despite staying in his spot. NONE of this would have been possible without the dance principal Debbie Corker (Rotherham Dance Centre) and her amazing teachers, Lisa, David, Kathleen, Anita, Sophie who continue to embrace Joseph’s differences and give him opportunities others have failed to do. We’re not sure how long it will last for. The gap widens but whilst ever he gives it his all, we’ll continue. I would love for them to have some recognition. Here are a few photos over the years. In 1948 The Alison School of Dance was opened by founding principal, Audrey Alison MBE. This year we celebrated our 75th year with an Anniversary Show raising £7,440.51 for local charities. Wendy Alison Latty, principal and Hayli Jennings, Vice-principal are proud to continue in Auntie Audrey's legacy by giving everyone an opportunity to learn to dance.

EMERY STAGE SCHOOL

Congratulations Lexi who filmed for a LEGO commercial in Bulgaria which is due to be released in spring 2024. Lexi was able to show her dancing skills and got to take part in some harness work which saw her elevated and acting up to 20 feet in the air. The Commercial is due to be released worldwide in stores, television, and most social media platforms. Phoebe has been in rehearsals for the last three months and now has just started her performances in Matilda the Musical at The Cambridge Theatre playing the part of Alice. 16

We had a lovely exam session in October and our Examiner Yvonne Novelli who presented the students with their Coronation Awards. A great day by all.

BTDA Championship Final Weekend Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th November 2023

I arrived at the Peepul Centre, Leicester, eagerly looking forward to the weekend ahead. Yes, you have guessed - it was the BTDA Championship finals weekend, and I was to be one of the adjudicators alongside the legend that is Derek Hartley and the talented professional Sandy Borne. This would culminate in gruelling heats throughout the year when the winners from all areas would come together to battle it out for the prestigious title of BTDA Champion. Fifteen schools across the country represented their areas in all disciplines: Tap, Modern, Lyrical, Ballet, Acrobatic, National, Song & Dance, Character & Greek dance. Each discipline was broken into Junior, Intermediate and Senior sections. As an adjudicator, I was not disappointed. Each performer, from the youngest to the oldest, performed 100 per cent; in many cases, the adjudication job was difficult indeed. Congratulations to all the young performers, their teachers for creative and interesting choreography, and the parents for investing so well in their children. BTDA certainly does lead the way! As always, the event organisation was exceptional; the programme ran on time, and there was a super atmosphere all weekend and good banter from my fellow adjudicators. Thank you to the management and staff of BTDA for a fabulous weekend enjoying the talent of our BTDA dancers.

SANDY BORNE

Thank you once again for inviting me. I had a great few days, and it is always lovely catching up with Derek and meeting Kathleen for the first time. I thought the standard this year was very high, which made the adjudicating quite tough, but I hope you all feel we did a good job. The juniors were particularly strong, with great personalities coming through and a maturity beyond their years. I was also impressed by the boys’ overall standards, which is great to see; going forward, the world of dance needs better standards for boys in every genre. It is always a pleasure to see the talent of the young ones coming through and to listen to some great music that has been chosen — I found myself moving to the beat and even quietly singing along to many of them, which adds to the enjoyment of the day adjudicating. My one thought to all the students going forward would be… well done to all of you. You should be very proud of yourselves, but for future routines, try and find something different that makes you stand out when putting your routine together. Find all the nuances in the music (accents, highs and lows, etc.) and make it specific to that track; you are all great, so you have to find something special to make the audience remember you. I hope to see you all again soon. Meanwhile, good luck with everything in the future.

Please note the following points from Preparatory to Grade 5, which have been clarified and updated in the current POS on ExamTrack dated December 2023.

Artistic Director — Denise Moore Group Members: Jill Gough, Katie Guyton, Julie Barker Since September, myself and the artistic group members have had a number of discussions regarding where we think some adjustments can be made to the acrobatic programme of study. Whilst aware that there have been some requests to look at grades 6 to 8, we have looked at the number of schools and students that have taken these grades over the past three years and found that there appears to be a significant drop off. With this in mind we decided to focus our attention initially on the lower grades. We are keen to find out more about why the numbers drop, so we plan to

carry out a survey on all schools which will help us to focus on the areas we need to address. We are currently working through some ideas on the preparatory and primary grades and hope to be able to have something ready to show you all in February. CLASSICAL BALLET

Artistic Director — Kathleen Davis Group Members: Emma Hillyer — Julie Feechan Firstly, I would like to make you all aware that we have a new group member in Miss Julie Feechan. Both Miss Hillyer and myself are very much looking forward to working with her on the artistic team. There have been changes made to the dress code in both grades 1-5 and the Vocational Levels. This page at the front of the POS also includes a statement on the gender choice of candidates. If I can also reiterate that classical tights that are closer to the skin tone of a candidate is perfectly acceptable for Classical examinations. The revised Grade 6 examination will be compulsory from February 2024, and the revised Grade 7 will be available in the new year. Theory questions will now be asked in these examinations. As a team we are looking at the theory questions asked during the ballet examination and are hoping to make them a little more technical based. For example, we ask what GRAND means — the answer given will be large or big and I begin to ask myself is the candidate really learning from this and is it relevant to future examinations. If we asked a more technical question such as what must we think about when we demonstrate a grand battement derriere? The set answer which we would provide would be I must keep my hips and shoulders square to the barre. With this answer the candidate has learnt a very important technical point at a low level which should serve them well in future and higher examinations. So this is our task at the moment. I will let you all know in February how we are progressing with it. The vocabulary of steps in appendix 1 of the Professional Practice for Vocational Examinations has been updated and amended making the examiners’ choice of steps for the enchainment more BTDA friendly. There is also footage of the Intermediate Vocabulary of steps on exam track for reference as a 26

teaching tool. I hope to have Advanced Foundation ready for February 2024. As a team we are starting right from the beginning of our programmes to match our POS to video footage hopefully making things a little less confusing for teachers. We are going to be very busy little elves running up to Christmas and the New Year! So may I and my team wish you the compliments of the season and hopefully we will see you all in the New Year. Artistic Director — Mark Hudson Group Members: Jill Gough — Helen Guy — Michelle Bailey, Denise Moore — Jackie Crummell A huge thank you to all the Tap teachers out there, the work you have done incorporating the new lower Grade Tap work into your schools is amazing. The feedback from the teachers is enthusiastic not just from their students but from you yourselves saying it has made you enjoy teaching tap again. I am still amazed by the enthusiasm and enjoyment from the examination candidates that have had the privilege to watch this year. Well, we are at the end of the year and looking forward to our next gathering so we will be launching the new Grade 1 Tap at the February meeting so please ensure you book tickets for the Leicester meeting and bring your tap shoes as we will be doing the work with you. If you are not teaching the Class Awards and the new lower Grade work, then please look at this on ExamTrack over the holiday period and see if it will work in your schools. The old Preparatory and Primary Examinations will no longer be accepted for Examinations from the 1st of January 2024 The team will be in the coming months going over the POS and ensuring that it matches the DVD footage on ExamTrack to ensure your lives are made a little easier, this will take some time, but it will be done. Artistic Director — Tracy Liggins Group Members: Jacqui Everitt, Wendy Oram It was great to see so many of you at the AGM and I’m sure you will agree it was a lovely venue. For those who couldn’t attend, my team and I had the pleasure of showing some of the Lyrical work. We demonstrated how to execute the corner work in grades 4 & 5 and some of the Prep and Primary, where we have confirmed which exercises are executed from parallel feet and which are from 1st position. This information is updated in the POS on exam track dated sept 2023. We have updated the dress code in the programmes of study as we can now confirm that the use of foot thongs (option 1) or Jazz Shoes (option 2) can now be worn from Grades 4 and above. Foot thongs can have a heel strap around the back of the foot but the heel itself should not be covered so shoes such as ballet shoes or full soled shoes cannot be worn. Step away from the barre to finish. Primary: Arm practice no repeat. Grade One: Barre exercise 2. Foot extension. Repeat once only. Centre Relaxation twice through only include coda. Grade Two: No amendments. Grade Three: Steps 1 straight skips, 2 on a flat foot — 2 on a rise — 2 with a hop — 4 with a strong elevation. 4 bars of 4/4 repeat once from the beginning. GRADE EIGHT GREEK 2023 — TECHNICAL GLOSSARY STEPS Panther walks and runs: Neat light precision of the foot work. Imitating catlike movements. Body and arms showing a rippling effect. Panther High Leap: Well elevated action proceeded by an accelerated run. Springing off two feet. Arms outstretched above the head and back. Body and legs aiming to show a backwards curvature of the spine. Landing in a deep 4th knee bend imitating catching of prey. Panther Long Leap: Emphasis on length of leap and not height. Landing on one foot with the other fully extended behind. Body and arms flung forward over leading leg. Recover back to a squat position cowering in a deep fourth knee bend. Bacchic High Leap: Executed as a high leap. Foot of lifted leg placed on the knee. Head flung well back. Arms tossed into a 6th frieze line. Bacchante Skip: Step hop, passing the working foot through 1st, knee slightly bent. Turn of the body in opposition, full bend of the back. Arms in 9th Angle position. Bacchic Dance: No movement can be too exaggerated, full use of the body showing an equal balance of both muscular strength and suppleness through the body. Expression must be sincere and projected. Rhythms of Bacchic dance are staccato and uneven giving a lively rendering of this dance form. Gestures of Tragedy: The walk of tragedy stride is short but heavy bearing the whole weight of the body on each step. Torches are carried in funeral processions symbolic to lighting the spirit of the dead. Torch must be held only in the left hand with the right hand supporting it a little higher up. Movement of the torch through positions whilst walking should be tense whilst projecting suffering and compassion in expression through the body face. Cymbals and Panther movements: Cymbals held by the cord/leather strap; hand must not touch the cymbal to avoid deadening the sound. The best sound is made when passing the cymbals lightly across each other 30

up and down. When a loud noise is required, this can be made by clashing the cymbals together. Light padding of the feet increases in speed and sound as the rhythm increases whilst extending the movement strongly through the body line. Dancing with drapery: The manipulation of the drapery requires strong free movement from the shoulder, and flexibility through the body line that will bend and curve in time with the beat of the music. The material should be between 2 /3 metres long. Silk is best as it should be a little heavy. Must be held firmly either by both or one hand according to the step of the movement. Dance with Tambour: Tambour must be held only in the left hand and beaten with the tips or the back of the fingers of the right hand. Beat lightly through ease of the wrist as tension dims the sound. MUSICAL THEATRE AND DRAMA REPORT

Artistic Director — Danielle Campbell Group Member: Julie Barker I can’t quite believe we are nearly at the end of another year; it feels like it was only yesterday I was writing the summer report, but here we are again! Well everything seems to be running smoothly, just one note for teachers entering candidates for Musical Theatre solo exams, please be aware that all copies of the candidates exam pieces MUST be sent to the examiner in either a word or PDF document seven days prior to the candidates exam, including a fact sheet with bullet points listing their research to the questions that can be asked during the Interview. This must be typed or hand written. Sheet music is not essential. This has been a rule since the start of the pandemic and was decided to be kept in as this allows the examiner to prepare in advance for the candidate’s interview. This is WINTER 2023

not necessary for pair or group exams as there is no Interview. However, hard copies of their pieces for all exams must also be available to the examiner on the day to allow them to prompt if necessary and must include their fact sheet/research for solo exams. I have had a lot of examiners saying that they have not been receiving this! The new Drama POS and mark scheme will be launched soon so please keep your eyes open for that. Keeping Children Safe — safeguarding guidance

Teachers will be aware the requirements for Registration were updated in January following the Department for Educations publication — Keeping Children Safe in Out of School Settings. So, what is an out-of-school settings? An organisation or individual who provides community activities, tuition or after school clubs for children. Such as youth clubs, after-school and holiday clubs, private tuition, music and dance lessons and sports training. The guidance covers advice on what policies and procedures providers should have in place for: WINTER 2023

• Health and safety • Safeguarding and child protection • Staff suitability • Governance BTDA supports this document, and the Teachers registration process ensures we show a duty of care to students taking BTDA examinations.
