As 2021 draws to a close, we have the chance to reflect on what’s been an optimistic year. The hustle and bustle of everyday life has started to return, and our lives certainly look more normal than they did 12 months ago.

Published by Signify – High Tech Campus 48, 5656 AE Eindhoven, The Netherlands www.signify.com/pioneersoflight

But more challenges await as winter brings low visibility and dimly lit streets. In December’s edition of eLuminous, we wanted to highlight some of the very best, high-performance street luminaires that can bring a warm glow back to our cities. We’re also shining the light on recent case studies in the UK; the city of Glasgow partnered with Signify to deliver a state-of-the-art smart streetlighting solution, while disinfectant UV-C lighting is playing its part at London-based rugby club, Harlequins. All that’s left to say is, enjoy — and on behalf of the whole Signify team, happy holidays. Anissa Abbou Head of Global Professional Specification, Signify

A classic design, balanced for future-thinking municipalities CityClassic gen2 The CityClassic family is designed around a flexible, modular concept based on two heights and two large canopy sizes, or a torch option without a canopy. Each is specifically designed to preserve the perfect proportions of the luminaire. The canopy is painted in a single color as standard, but a bicolor option with a white painted underside can also be requested. When using Ledgine O, the range is also easy to retrofit with GentleBeam and/or a backlight louvre.

Designed for dark skies CityClassic gen2 Where a minimum Upward Light Ratio (ULR) is required, for natural zones or strict environmental reasons, specific CityClassic gen2 models are the perfect options. These versions feature black arms and a spigot mask and have a sharper cut-off light distribution to minimize the impact on the environment and dark sky.

Extending the home experience to the street TownTune Conical Comfort Bowl Philips GentleBeam technology is an effective performant solution in other luminaire families to improve the comfort lighting experience. In TownTune Conical Comfort Bowl this expertise has now been applied for the first time on an entire deep bowl. Following CIE 115:2010 & EN 13201-2:2015, “D” discomfort glare index, TownTune can achieve D4 and D5, and, depending on the optic type and flux chosen, sometimes even D6 classification.

Glasgow City Council wanted to make its city center a greener and more attractive place to live, work, and enjoy as part of its ‘Enabling Infrastructure – Integrated Public Realm (EIIPR) program.’ A significant part of achieving this goal was to create a connected lighting system throughout the city center.

Project 1

“The vision for the future of the city center is to make it a safer, more welcoming area to work and live. The new urban lighting columns from Signify will make a big contribution to the beautification of the area and quality of life for residents and visitors.” © Charlieurban

Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of the Glasgow City Region Cabinet

Project 1

The lighting columns were designed to resemble trees to blend into the tree-lined avenues, enhancing the lighting and aesthetic of the area. The structures can also provide light shows using the Interact Landmark connected lighting platform to showcase features such as

sparkling lights, snowfall effects, and dynamic chaser lights that travel up and down the avenue. Moreover, the lighting provides wayfinding to guide residents and visitors. The decorative lighting columns enable the area to adapt seamlessly to current events and special occasions.
