Friends of the Lobero, I am happy to share this special edition of Backstage at the Lobero with you in my new role as Lobero Theatre Foundation Board President. I am so honored to have the opportunity to do my part for this amazing community theatre, and add to its impressive legacy. This is an exciting time at the Lobero Theatre. After nearly three years of hard work, we have entered the final phase of fundraising for the Encore: Lobero Campaign. Construction began on June 3, and already we’ve seen amazing progress: the bricks from the entry and paseo have been lifted and safely stored for re-use, the auditorium seats have been removed so that extensive venting and ducting can be added along with new wood floors, and demolition has been completed in order to dramatically expand both restrooms. As construction continues, you will see extensive work to improve our compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, including a much safer pathway to the front of the theatre (see page 33). We will also complete restoration painting to our mosaic ceiling, re-install roomier, more comfortable seating and complete the theatre’s first-ever heating and air conditioning system. The Lobero Board and staff are so excited for the completion of this preservation and audience comfort project, which will prepare the theatre for many more decades of great performances.
While the theatre is dark, I ask you to help us make a strong finish to this campaign. We are nearing the finish line and you can help us reach our goal. People feel connected to the Lobero for a number of reasons. I know folks who have performed on stage, or watched their children perform. Others love its history and connection to Santa Barbara’s colorful past. And let’s not forget about the experience of seeing a favorite artist in this intimate space. For me, it’s all that jazz. Thirteen years ago, before the Jazz at the Lobero series began, I brought my son Andy to see Wynton Marsalis and Lincoln Center Jazz. I was thrilled to see this major talent in such a small venue. The show was great, and afterward we had the chance to meet Mr. Marsalis in the artists’ green room, chat about the performance and snap a photo, which made that night unforgettable.

It is said that during the 1922 campaign to rebuild Jose Lobero’s theatre, “everyone was asked [for a contribution] and everyone gave.” For that to be true, it must have been an extraordinary community that came together to build this charming venue. If asked your feelings about the Lobero, many of you would say something like, “I love the Lobero,” or, “It is such an intimate and wonderful place.” Nearly every person I have met who has attended a performance will speak in the most affectionate terms of this delightful old theatre. Often they will speak of how lucky we are as a community to have the Lobero to enjoy. And I say to them,
the Lobero is lucky to have a community such as this to act as its stewards. Three years ago the Lobero Board determined it was time to move forward with a campaign to preserve and enhance the theatre. Though a difficult time economically, the condition of the theatre demanded action. If the Lobero wished to remain a center for Santa Barbara’s performing arts, the moment had come to restore the theatre’s historic and uniquely intimate character. In the few months remaining, if you have not already done so, I am asking you to do more than share your thoughtful words of praise for the Lobero. I ask you to honor the long Santa Barbara tradition of supporting and caring for its cultural institutions, and reaffirm your commitment to this historic gem. As in 1922, we are asking everyone to contribute, and we hope you will respond like those who came before you.

IT ALL STARTED WITH THE SEATS You may have noticed some of the chipped paint on the sides of the aisles, the sagging seat cushions, or heard the creaky hinges. The condition of the theatre spoke volumes over the hum of the economic downturn of 2009 and over the needs of an already stretched annual fund. The Lobero’s supportive volunteer board heard the call, taking action in an unprecedented way. Encore: Lobero galvanized their mission and spurred almost $2 million in board giving. The Lobero Theatre Foundation staff led more than 50 public tours over 18 months, educating friends about the Lobero’s history and unique character and gaining new supporters along the way. More than 100 donors met the call initially, and many more joined in the celebration of the Lobero’s 140th birthday party, presided over by Mayor Schneider and campaign chair Jim Morouse. The Lobero has received its first $1 million gift in the lifetime of the foundation. Encore: Lobero has been helped by the support of top-tier artists, Jeff Bridges and David Crosby, who generously lent their talents in an unforgettable benefit concert. The journey that led to the Encore: Lobero preservation work happening today began over three years ago–three years filled with meticulous planning and consideration about what to do now, what could wait, and how to accomplish our goals. Streamlining the focus of Encore: Lobero to “audience comfort” drew a line in the sand that all subsequent decisions would have to meet. Replacing the seats, relics of the Reagan-era, was a must. Increasing the size of the restrooms, especially the ladies’, was a must. Meeting ADA compliance was not only a legal requirement; it was the right thing to do for our patrons and our community.
The board and foundation have had to make tough decisions, and I cannot overstate how much that commitment has meant to this organization. The sacrifices made by this board are invaluable, including increased giving and a larger time commitment. In turn, we knew that as a staff we would need to do more with less in order to make Encore: Lobero successful. The Lobero staff rose to the occasion with 100% participation in Encore: Lobero donations and have shouldered an increased workload across the board.
This was the time to act, and I’m proud to say that we met the challenge. We believe you’ll agree with our choices when you return to a revitalized theatre in December 2013. Our number one goal as stewards of this very important building has been to ensure its longevity, and to create the safest, most enjoyable experience for our patrons. I often comment in this column that it’s Your Theatre, and I mean it more today than ever. Thank you all for your commitment to the Lobero Theatre.

Lobero Theatre Board Welcomes Steve Hayes The newest addition to the Lobero Theatre’s dynamic board of directors is Steve Hayes. As managing partner with Hayes Commercial Group, Steve has built a reputation for superior client service and integrity. In fact, Steve has leased more office space in Santa Barbara County than any other broker with more than 1,000 commercial transactions totaling over $1 billion in value. Under his leadership, Hayes Commercial Group has grown into one of the outstanding commercial firms in the region, and the only Santa Barbara-based firm named to Real Estate Forum’s Top Brokerage Houses of Southern California in 2011.
Steve has enjoyed seeing jazz greats like Ray Brown, Shirley Horn, and Diana Krall at the Lobero over the years. “It’s really the perfect size venue to see a world class jazz performance.
Steve was previously on the board of the Lobero Theatre Foundation in the late 1990’s. During that time he participated in the preparations for an extensive remodel of the rigging, lighting and sound infrastructure. Steve was also a major proponent in the creation of the Jazz at the Lobero series. He remembers, “There was significant financial risk– fortunately Bruce Willard and Territory Ahead generously sponsored the Series in its infancy. The rest is history. 12 years later, we’re one of the world’s top jazz venues by Downbeat Magazine.”
In addition to his love of music and performance, Steve is also moved by the historic significance of the theatre, which he views as an invaluable legacy to be enjoyed and preserved by the Santa Barbara community.

One of the last events to take place in the Lobero before construction began was a memorial service for Jonathan Winters. Jonathan was a devoted friend to the theatre, performing at a number of benefits on its behalf and bringing along a cadre of talented friends. Columnist Richard Monroe traveled from Peoria, Illinois to bid farewell to this funniest of funny men. (In May) I traveled with my son, Zack, to Santa Barbara, California, to attend the memorial service for my friend, Jonathan Winters. It was held in the historic Lobero Theater with about 135 by-invitation-only attendees. The service opened with a Marine Guard posting the colors and a short narrative of Jonathan’s service as a Marine. Jonathan was part of a 90 member Marine detachment on the USS Bon Homme Richard, the only aircraft carrier that was not hit or damaged in the South Pacific.

Klein. The eulogies ended with emotional remarks from Jonathan’s daughter Lucinda and son Jay. TV producer Don Pasternak narrated the moving service. On the theater stage were some antique children’s items. Jonathan was an antique collector. He once sent me an antique pin dating to the 1800’s from Peoria. The children’s toys on stage included a bike, ball, bat, wagon, and a school lunch pail. In concluding the memorial, Pasternak said, “This has been a beautiful, wonderful tribute to our friend Jonathan Winters.” The people responded with applause. Pasternak continued, “It’s too bad Jonathan could not be here.”
With that, Pasternak walked over to where the toys were, picked up the child’s lunch pail, walked back to the speaker’s lectern and gently set it down. And then Pasternak announced, “But he is.” Like his wife Eileen, Jonathan was cremated. His ashes were in the pail. (Jonathan) was a magnificent man and friend. I thank God for his friendship. It was hard for me to believe, a simple man in Peoria, who became a close and personal friend of one of the greatest comedians who ever lived. He was loved and is missed.

Mark Dendy Dance and Theater Projects will enjoy a month-long DANCEworks creative residency on the Lobero stage, during which they will create and premiere a new work. DANCEworks is gaining broad recognition within the world of contemporary dance and has already contributed to the careers of groundbreaking choreographers Aszure Barton, Larry Keigwin, Doug Elkins, and Brian Brooks.

2013 has been an exciting year at the Lobero Theatre, and the fun isn’t over yet! In February we took the Encore: Lobero Campaign public in a big way, celebrating the theatre’s 140th anniversary with a party on-stage. More than 100 friends and supporters came together in the festively festooned theatre to mix, mingle and enjoy the bluegrass sounds of The Mobile Homeboys (Double-Wide). Dozens got caught up in the fun and bought raffle tickets or made generous donations to the campaign, earning membership in the exclusive Club 140 and moving us even closer to our fundraising goal line. The apex of the evening came when Mayor Helene Schneider made a declaration in celebration of the Lobero’s long history, and Campaign Chair Jim Morouse led guests in a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” to this grand old community theatre.

An evening with Jeff Bridges and the Abiders ~ March 28, 2013 In March, a sold-out audience was treated to an intimate performance with Jeff Bridges and the Abiders and yes, indeed, the Dude does abide. To add to this fantastic performance, Bridges generously donated a beautiful guitar, complete with original artwork drawn on the guitar body by the Dude himself. When the first guitar was bid up and purchased in record time, Bridges bounded on stage with a second custom instrument, doubling the auction proceeds. All of this just in the first half of the evening! For the second set, David Crosby– in a treat the audience won’t soon forget–joined the band for a rare collaboration. Following the show, 100 VIP ticket holders attended a party in the Courtyard with Bridges and Crosby, where both icons generously shared their time in support of the theatre. Our thanks go out to two legendary performers who truly love the Lobero.

GO TO HALE: VOLUME 4, TREASURES OF THE LOST ART ~ APRIL 13, 2013 Entertainment writer Brett Leigh Dicks has written about Hale Milgrim’s “unadulterated passion for music” which has inspired an incredible career that began at local Isla Vista record store and lead to helming Capitol Records. The Encore: Lobero special edition of “Go to Hale,” named after Hale’s longrunning weekly radio show on KTYD, brought out some real gems from his expansive personal collection. Hale told stories about the stars, ranging from Sings Like Hell headliners who have appeared on the Lobero stage all the way up to genuine rock gods. The evening’s tour de rock was peppered with insights on the “biz,” and enthusiastic recommendations for new favorites to watch. Hale and wife Anne share a love of the arts and have been Santa Barbara residents and enthusiastic supporters of the Lobero for 20 years. We can’t wait to welcome them to their new seats when the Lobero reopens.
FIRST THURSDAY RAFFLE ~ MAY 2, 2013 After months of anticipation, the community came together for a very special First Thursday event in May. Performing between the iconic archways of the Lobero, Christy Martin and her Blue Moon Quartet dazzled the crowd with swinging jazz and crooning vocals. Following their set, the assembled crowd was geared up and ready to win the forty amazing prizes out on display, which included restaurant gift certificates, tickets to performing arts events, winery and hotel packages, as well as a grand prize opportunity to name two seats in the Lobero Theatre. CAMA MASTERSERIES A season of great artistic and musical depth, the Community Arts Music Association (CAMA) presents the 2014 Masterseries at the Lobero Theatre. It is a season that celebrates “geniuses,” as MacArthur “Genius Grant” winner Stephen Hough shares the series with MacArthur winner Chris Thile (of Punch Brothers), as he makes his Santa Barbara recital debut with mandolin transcriptions of Bach and original compositions. The Kalichstein-LaredoRobinson Trio (piano, violin, cello) starts things off with a meaty program of trios by Schubert, Mendelssohn and Brahms.

Music SINGS LIKE HELL Sings Like Hell is a radical, critically acclaimed concert series. The musical focus is on singer songwriters ranging from radio-friendly pop and rock, through any and all genres imaginable. Sings Like Hell has a loyal fan base that is upscale in the coolest way–It’s very hot music in a very cool place. The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, featuring Joseph Kalichstein, piano, Jaime Laredo, violin, and Sharon Robinson, cello, starts off this year’s Masterseries on Saturday, January 11. One of today’s most beloved ensembles, these three artists share their passion for music with audiences worldwide. Three and a half decades after its debut at the White House, The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio continues to bring technical mastery, expressive depth, and magnetism to the concert stage. Chris Thile, mandolin, appears in solo recital on Tuesday, February 11 to present his arrangements of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Transcriptions for Solo Mandolin. Chris Thile, of Punch Brothers, is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist. With a broad outlook that encompasses progressive bluegrass, classical, rock and jazz, Thile transcends the borders of conventionally circumscribed genres, creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike. On this new program, Thile draws from his new Bach recording, while also exploring his own compositions and contemporary music.
SANTA BARBARA CHORAL SOCIETY Get into the holiday spirit with the sounds of the season! Santa Barbara Choral Society and conductor, JoAnne Wasserman, return to the Lobero stage with Hallelujah, a family-friendly concert of traditional holiday music on
December 14 and 15. Come enjoy what is sure to become a holiday tradition as the orchestra, soloists, and the 90+ voice chorus leads a journey through classical, traditional and modern holiday favorites, including the “Hallelujah Chorus.” What holiday season would be complete without it?
Film WARREN MILLER ENTERTAINMENT Don’t miss the highly-anticipated 64 th annual installment in Warren Miller’s high-octane film series as Ticket to Ride makes a stop at the Lobero Theatre on December 4 at 8 pm. Dance GUSTAFSON DANCE Gustafson Dance presents Rudolph on Saturday, December 7 at 2 pm and 6 pm. Ostracized from the other reindeer because of his shiny red nose, Rudolph sets out on a journey into the snowy forest, where the Abominable Snow Monster lives. Theatre SANTA BARBARA REVELS Santa Barbara Revels present The Christmas Revels: In Celebration of the Winter Solstice on Saturday, December 21 at 2:30 and 7:30 pm and Sunday, December 22 at 2:30 pm. This year’s production of “The Spirits of Haddon Hall” takes place in Derbyshire, England in 1929 and is filled with wonderful choral and instrumental music spanning the 12 th to 20 th centuries and lively country dancing, stories, and beloved Revels traditions. This imaginative interpretation of events from an actual time and place will entertain, enlighten, and entice audiences of all ages. As the Santa Barbara Revels like to say, “Join us and be joyous!”

FUTURE OF ACCESSIBILITY IS BRIGHT AT THE LOBERO THEATRE The Lobero Theatre will become more accessible for guests and performers with special needs from the inside out! It is the belief of this board and staff that all groups should easily access all facets of the Lobero Theatre, including those with mobility challenges, which are covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA is a wide-ranging civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability. Starting from the street, an accessible path of travel will be provided to the main entry. The front brick area will offer a level area at the top reached by stairs (that follow the design shown on George Washington Smith’s original drawings), or by an ADA approved ramp. To offer
wheelchair spaces offer a variety of choices as to where to sit, and a new wheelchair lift will provide access from the auditorium up to the stage level. The auditorium will also be wired with Hearing Loop technology, which allows those wearing hearing aids to adjust their devices to amplify the sound to their comfort. The Paseo at the side of the theatre will be re-paved with brick to meet accessibility requirements including a new ramp that will be located just under the arch from the parking garage down to the Green Room stairs. Walkways at two side exits and under the Pergola are also being replaced with steps to meet code. Backstage, the sink and cabinetry in the artists’ Green Room will be updated to meet requirements as well.
The removal of architectural barriers to provide accessibility is the right thing to do for our patrons in order to ensure their safety and comfort while at the Lobero, in addition to being mandated by law. perspective, in order to meet current building code a sloped entry cannot be greater than 2%, and the previous brick entry had a slope of greater than 10% in some areas! With such a tilt, a person in a wheelchair angles towards Canon Perdido as they move across the brick in an unsafe manner. The original bricks will be salvaged and reused in the new installation.
The Foundation design team has meticulously researched and worked diligently with the Historic Landmarks Commission, archivists and historians to ensure that the architectural integrity of the Lobero Theatre is both honored and upheld.
Inside the theatre, the restrooms are being enlarged and will meet today’s accessibility requirements, a new “hi-low” drinking fountain will be included in the Lobby, and the auditorium will offer eight wheelchair spaces along with space for companion seating. The locations of the

Their work spans from auditoriums and theatres to schools, government buildings, healthcare facilities and places of worship. Lobero patrons may have seen their beautiful restoration work at the Marjorie Luke Theatre, one of our sister-venues.
Since 1982, Schipper Construction has been completing award-winning construction and renovation projects, including critical seismic upgrades to the Lobero Theatre in the early 1990’s. Other local projects include major renovations at the Santa Barbara Zoo, Hahn Hall at the Music Academy of the West, and the Santa Barbara Cemetery Mausoleum at the Old Mission Santa Barbara, just to name a few.
Preserving the historic aspects of the Lobero Theatre, a George Washington Smith and Lutah Maria Riggs design, called for a deep historical knowledge and familiarity with the building. It was critical to all parties involved that the utmost respect be paid to the iconic designers while bringing the auditorium up to modern standards. Dawn Ziemer, principal designer on the project, put in many research hours at the
