HE DA is calling for extensive and improved safety measures to prevent people from jumping off the Van Stadens Bridge.

This follows a day after the 86th person jumped from this notorious ‘Bridge of Death’ on Tuesday, October 9.

The body of Wayne Wewege (28) from Port Alfred was found on Tuesday morning by police offices.

According to Warrant Officer Marianette Olivier, a police spokesperson, members of the Thornhill Police Station noticed a stationary vehicle on the bridge at approximately 6am. After investigation Wewege’s body was found.

According to a family member’s Facebook-statement, Wewege was missing since Sunday.

It was the fourth suicide at the bridge this year.

According to MPL Pine Pienaar, the measures that have already been taken, such as cameras to monitor the movement on the bridge, is clearly not enough.

“More must be done to ensure that people cannot gain access to the sides of the bridge at any point,”

Hoërskool Patensie ‘stort ineen’ News in brief/ Nuus in kort

DIE Hoërskool Patensie is gister in ’n onderwysverslag in die Oos-Kaapse wetgewer uitgesonder as “ ’n skool op die randjie van ineenstorting.”

Met skaars twee maande oor voordat matriekeksamens begin, was veral hierdie verslag op die gemeenskapsvergaderings wat van Dinsdag tot Vrydag duur, onder die loep.

Mzoleli Mrara, ANC-voorsitter van die komitee vir onderwys, het in dié verslag oor besoeke aan verskeie skole in die gebied gedurende September, van die probleme uitgelig.

Luidens die verslag oor die Hoërskool Patensie: .het die skool ’n 0%-slaagsyfer in Maart behaal; .die skool het geen onderwysers vir Afrikaans (graad 10 tot 12), lewensoriëntering (graad 8 tot 12), tegnologie (graad 8 en 9), en kuns en kultuur (graad 8 en 9) gehad nie. .Onderwysers van ander skole moes gesekondeer word en moet nou teruggaan na hul skole tot die einde van die jaar. .Net drie klaskamers in die skool het elektrisiteit en leerders moes hul eksamens sonder lig aflê.

.Die krag is in Julie afgesny en is nog nie weer aangeskakel nie, want die skool se begroting het nog nie van die departement af opgedaag nie.

Van die algemene bevindings was dat talle onderwysposte in die skole wat besoek is (sien lys hiernaas), vakant is.

Die meeste skole het ’n tekort aan basiese meubels soos banke, stoele en tafels.

“Daar is ’n algemene gebrek aan betrokkenheid van die ouers by die opvoeding van hul kinders en die leerders word gekonfronteer deur maatskaplike uitdagings soos swangerskap, dwelmmisbruik, misdaad en MIV/vigs wat sielkundige probleme veroorsaak en hul leerproses beïnvloed,” het Mrara gesê.

Hy het die departement gevra om parallelmedium-onderrig in te bring en voorsiening te maak vir salarisaanpassings om onderwysers na plattelandse skole te lok. .Die skole wat besoek is, is: Kirkwood Hoër en St. Colmcille Senior Primêr in Kirkwood; AV Bukani Primêr en Addo Primêr in Addo; Graslaagte Primêr, Lungiso Hoër; Kruisfontein Primêr en Mzingisi Primêr in Humansdorp; St. Patrics Primêr in Sea Vista; Misgund Primêr in Misgund; Louterwater Hoër in Louterwater; Hankey Primêr in Hankey en Patensie Hoër in Patensie.

Two die in fatal crash A motorist, Michael Msizi (49) and an unknown pedestrian were fatally injured in a collision at approximately 8pm on October 4 on the N2 near Kareedouw.

According to lt. col. Priscilla Naidu, it is alleged that the drive of a Range Rover was travelling towards Kareedouw when he overtook a heavy articulated vehicle.

After overtaking, the driver collided into an unknown female pedestrian. The vehicle spun out of control and collided with an approaching truck,” said Naidu.

“The driver, Mzisi, died on impact. His wife, who was with him, sustained minor injuries and was treated at hospital and has already been discharged.

According to Naidu, the pedestrian is a black female and it suspected to be in her thirties.

Police in Kareedouw are appealing to the public to assist in her identification. The investigating officer is d/w/o Jacque le Roux can be contacted at 0 042 288 7100. A case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

Jewellery thief apprehended ON October 4 Francina Nomalanga (29) from Tokyo Sexwale in Jeffreys Bay was arrested for the theft of jewellery.

According to w/o Petra Els, she worked

as a domestic worker at several houses in Jeffreys Bay from May to the end of September this year, during which she stole jewellery to the value of over R50 000.

Nomalanga appeared in the Humansdorp Court on October 5.

Els requests members of the public to take photos of their valuable jewellery. This will assist the police to identify stolen items. “We often see valuable items during operations, but have no idea what to look for,” said Els.

New local Aids Council elected

Old defunct system being replaced

NEW committee responsible for coordinating the fight against HIV/Aids in the Kouga has been elected.

The Kouga Local Aids Council was elected last Friday at the Cultural Centre in Humansdorp to replace the old structure which became defunct.

The meeting comprised Kouga councillors and officials, and various representatives from ward committees, youth structures, NGOs, clinic committees, faith based organisations, arts and culture groupings, people living with disabilities, and government departments.

Speaking at the meeting, portfolio

councillor and chairperson of the LAC Councillor Thandeka Maseti said it was a great relief that stakeholders had shown such great enthusiasm towards the revival of the structure.

“HIV/Aids affect all of us in one way or another and it requires a joint effort from us all to ensure that we take the fight against the pandemic to the next level and hopefully succeed,” she said.

She added that it was the duty of all committee members and stakeholders to ensure that the new structure fulfils its mandate and that it serves its full term.

Some of the duties of the LAC are coordination of HIV/Aids pro-

grammes within Kouga, strengthening of partnerships amongst stakeholders and to act as an advisory body to the municipal Council on HIV/Aids matters.

The members of the committee are councillor Thandeka Maseti (Chairperson), Gene Thube (KM HIV/Aids Coordinator and LAC Secretary), Monde Fulani, Siyabonga Jama, Wadje Solomon, Julius Antoni, Yolanda Juries, Sammy Persent, Reverend Siyabonga Tambo, Cathy Madikane, Ricardo Adams, Nzimeni Oliphant, Lee-Graven van Rooyen, Glady Philander, Sipho Simamane, Nomalungelo Ntengwane and Annie Norushu.

ILSE KRIGE SOWAT 100 inwoners het verlede Woesndag opgedaag by die munisipale kantore hier vir ’n protesoptog oor swak dienslewering in die Kouga- munisipale gebied.

Dít nadat meer as 700 mense in September hul ontevredenheid met die munisipaliteit gelug het.

Paul Hjul, voorsitter van die Jeffreysbaai-inwonersverenging, het gesê die blote feit dat die optog vreedsaam was en wel plaasgevind het, beteken hulle het bereik wat hulle wou bereik, naamlik om druk op die plaaslike owerhede te plaas.

Laura-Leigh Randall, munisipale woordvoerder, het gesê ’n munisipaliteit het die reg om toestemming vir ’n optog te weier.

“Die mense is deur die polisie gevra om uiteen te gaan, omdat dit nie ’n wettige optog was nie. Dis nie dat ons gesê het hulle mag nie betoog nie – ons het net gesê dit is nie ’n geleë tyd nie, want hier was niemand om die memorandum te ontvang nie.”

Sy het gesê die munisipale bestuurder, Sidney Fadi, was in ’n vergadering toe die betogers opgedaag het.

“Hy het binne die gebou met die organiseerders van die optog en die polisie gesels. Die polisie het die organiseerders gevra om die saamtrek te verdaag, omdat hulle nie toestemming gehad het om dit te hou nie.

Alles het vreedsaam verloop.”

Sy het gesê hulle het nog nie ’n aansoek vir ’n alternatiewe datum gekry nie.

Lt.kol. Zolani Xawuka, stasiebevelvoerder van die Jeffreysbaai-polisie, het bevestig die optog is nie deur die munisipaliteit gemagtig nie.

FTER years of careful planning and endless fundraising efforts, the Rainbow Day Care Centre in Kruisfontein, Humansdorp might soon boast two new wings - vastly improving the learning facilities at the Centre.

Plans to extend the Centre headed under die Victory4All Projects and which is home to 58 learners with special needs, such as physical and mental disabilities or learning difficulties - is set to be submitted to the Kouga Municipality in this week.

Johan Vos, co-founder of V4All Projects, is positive that

they will get the approval to start building very soon. “Everything is according to building restriction, so it will not be a problem to have the approval soon.”

According to Vos, the two planned wings will boast six new classrooms, a computer room, a new headmaster’s office and four new ablution blocks.

“At the moment the centre only has space for a maximum of 60 children. The waiting list for new children wanting to enrol at the Centre, stands at approximately 45. With the new classrooms and additional facilities we will be able to accommodate another 60 to 75 children,” said Vos. It is anticipated that building, at a cost of R1.7-million, will start early in next year.

Hy is al vir die afgelope 21 jaar ’n passievolle brandweerman en hou sedert 5-jarige-ouderdom gereeld by Gamtoos vakansie. Hy het so verlief geraak om dié vakansieplek van sy kinderjare dat hy hom in 2011 permanent hier kom vestig het.

“Met ons naaste brandweerstasie

meer as 40km ver loop die inwoners ’n groot gevaar indien ’n brand sou uitbreek. Oor die jare het meer en meer inwoners my advies oor brandbestryding kom vra, en dié behoefte aan opgeleide brandbestryders het gelei tot die tot standkoming van die Gamtoos Brandweerdiens.”

Volgens Riaan bestaan die Gamtoos Brandweerdiens uit ’n span van 10 vrywilligers wat vir die liefde van die saak die veiligheid van die gemeenskap verseker.

“Die groep vrywilligers is deeglik opgelei en interne opleiding - teoreties sowel as prakties, wat dril-oefeninge insluit - vind voortdurend plaas. Ons het selfs ’n ontruimingsplan in plek. As ’n span maak ons seker dat ons aan die voorpunt van ontwikkeling op ons gebied is.”

Volgens Riaan is hulle ten volle toegerus om nood situasies soos veldbrande, huisbrande en mediese noodgevalle - insluitend slangbyte - te hanteer.

“Die brandweerdiens beskik oor twee sleepwaens wat elk toegerus is met ’n watertenk, brandslang, brandblusser en die nodige noodhulp toerusting. Verder beskik ons oor ons eie waterpomp met ’n kapasiteit van 500 liter en spesiaal-toegeruste

sleepwa, wat dien as ons eerste reaksie eenheid.”

Aldus Riaan werk hulle nou saam met alle nooddienste, soos byvoorbeeld die polisie, brandweer en paramediese lede. “Ons probeer om ’n steun basis te wees vir inwoners in hul tyd van nood.”

Volgens Riaan is hy en sy groep vrywilligers slaggereed vir die komende vakansiemaande wat ’n toeloop van vakansiegangers en braaivleisvure beteken.

Riaan gaan deelneem in hamergooi, diskus, spiesgooi, gewigstoot en toutrek.

Riaan Windhorst from Paradise Beach is set to, once again after 22 years of absence, compete in the F1 Powerboat Championships.

Formerly the youngest Formula 1 Powerboat pilot, 42-year-old Riaan Windhorst from Paradise Beach, is gearing up to tame the water in his Seabolt Powerboat at 240km/h.

This follows after the F1 Powerboat Corporate Body approached Riaan a month ago, asking him to return to the F1-racing scene.

“I have been dreaming for a long time to return to F1 Powerboat racing, and this opportunity presented by F1 Powerboat Corporate Body could not have come at a better time,” said Riaan.

“F1 Powerboat racing is highly competitive, where the boats travel an

astonishing 22km/h on water and go from 0 - 100km/h in a mere 3.5 seconds.

Riaan first started racing in 1982, competing in the Junior Hotdog Classes. During the two years he competed in this class he not only came second overall in his first year, but also claimed the sought-after winningcrown in his second year of racing securing his Northern Transvaal Colours.

At the end of his second year, Riaan upgraded to the Formula 40 Class and won 7 of his 10 races for the season.

He came third in the SA Games and received his Northern Transvaal Senior Colours.

From there on there was no stop-

ping this adrenaline-junkie, and he became the youngest Formula 1 Pilot in the world at the young age of 16 years.

In his first year, Riaan earned several wins and ended third overall in his first season in the carburettor class.

During his second season, he managed to secure the second overall position.

His racing career came to an end in 1990 when he enlisted in the army for training.

In order for Riaan to make his comeback to Formula 1 Powerboat racing, he needs funding from businesses or an individual. According to Riaan, funds needed are approximately R15 000 per event or R250 000 per season. “In return, sponsors will get maximum exposure in terms of advertising. If the per season option is selected, the boat will be painted in the sponsor’s colours,” said Riaan.

Local entrepreneur tackles tough economy MONIQUE BASSON WHEN the local economy got tough and business started to slow down, a determined entrepreneur from Humansdorp decided she would do everything in her power to survive this rough patch - all while keeping her head held high.

Local entrepreneur and owner of Hair by Raccinné in Humansdorp, Racinné Kahn who has been based in this unique little town for the last 18 years, has recently closed the doors of her shop in Du Plessis Street and moved her business to her house.

According to Khan, this move is due to financial reasons, as well as offering more hands-on and one-on-one services to her clients.

“When I first started my business 18

years ago, the rent used to be R700.

Over the years it has increased to almost R5 000. This, coupled with the cost of living inflation, made it necessary for me to make a drastic change or face the possibility of having to close my business,” said Khan.

“I decided to scale down on the gift side of my business and run the salon and soap-making initiative from my house.

“What a blessing this turned out to be. Not only is the stress far less, but I can now offer my services in a more relaxed atmosphere to my clients.”

According to Ora Schroeder, who has been a client of Khan for the last 15 years, she enjoys this change tremendously. “This is so much better, not only is it more private, but it is also more sunny.”

Local rally heads to J-Bay THE national rally season is done and dusted but for local rally fans the excitement continues.

The Fountains Mall’s regional rally championship, in association with the Algoa Rally Association, takes place on Saturday, October 13 with the start at 9am.

The event starts in the Fountains Mall parking lot before heading out to gravel and tar stages located around Jeffreys Bay. In addition to the rally start, spectators can look forward to a drift car at Fountains Mall which will provide motorsport action between the rally stages.

Supporting events include go-karts and displays which will keep spectators entertained.

The service park will also be at Fountains Mall and is open to the public who can view the cars being serviced between stages.

Rally vehicles and tar-only competitors will compete for the fastest stage times in the Gabriel Jewellers Stage, which will take place around the Fountains Mall parking area, Blue Waters and the Sands Complex.

This will be followed by the fast gravel sta-

ges past Jubiliee Estates and on the Lombardini Road. Provision will be made for spectator viewing.

The S20 open-class will be a close contest between Brian and Gary Heine in a Datsun SSS Coupe National rally-built vehicle, Rikus Smit and Johan Viljoen driving a VW Golf 2 litre and Nico Smit with navigator John Wright competing in a VW Polo. Neels and Jan Vosloo could spoil the party with winning stage times competing in a National specification, well prepared Nissan Sentra.

The regional RA5 VW Junior rally team will be a close contest between the front runners of Andrew Heine, Jouwert Van Der Walt and Ross Bartle - all competing in Volkswagen Motor Sport specification Citi Golfs.

Ford fans will also be in for a treat with Ford Escorts of Iddo Steyn, JP Van Zyl and Ron Scott with respective navigators, which include the experienced Mark Irvine.

The Fountains Mall Rally come to a close at the Mall in the late afternoon with a final tar stage and prize-giving.

Waddle you do to save our penguins?

ESTI STEWART BAYWORLD in Port Elizabeth will host a four-day Penguin Waddle from Cape St Francis to Maitlands in a bid to create awareness of the endangered African Penguinm who could disappear within 50 years.

Algoa Bay is home to almost half the world’s total population of the African Penguin. “We will be ‘waddling’ from October 12 to 15 and the focus is not on fundraising, but on conservation awareness,” says Trudi Malan from Penguin Eastern Cape.

The public is invited to join one of two teams who will be walking to Maitlands - the one team is from Penguins Eastern Cape (PEC) in Cape St Francis and the other team from Bayworld in Port Elizabeth.

from PEC on October 12 on the first leg to Jeffreys Bay. Day 2 will be from Jeffreys Bay to the Gamtoos, with day 3 from the Gamtoos to Van Stadens and on the final day from Van Stadens to Maitlands.

Each waddler will receive a complimentary ticket to Bayworld that they can use at their leisure. Waddlers must wear black and white or dress like a penguin. Banners, signs, and flags are welcome – as long as they are of penguins.

Tickets are available from the Oceanarium staff at R20 for adults and R10 for children. Members of the public are invited to bring along their picnic baskets and drinks.

Trashy’ fashion show to hit Jeffreys Bay Global Leadership Academy (GLA), in conjunction with Fountains Mall, will debut the first Recycled Fashion Show, scheduled to take place on October 13 at 10.30am.

The fashion show is intended to educate the general public about recycling in a fun and exciting way, as well as to raise much-needed funds to build GLA’s multi-functional educational facility with an international green rating. The facility will encompass a school, sport facilities and housing for learners.

“The show is encouraging youth and adults of all ages to get creative and construct fashions made entirely from recyclable materials for a chance to win great prizes. All fashion show entries may contain only recyclable materials such as tin cans, metals, plastics and paper,” said Sonja Janse van Rensburg.

After the fashion show the public will be asked to vote for their favourite dress of the day. Residents can vote as many times as they like at a cost of R2 per vote.

Votes can be placed in a ballot box and will be counted by an independent person with the winner being announced in the Kouga Express on October 18. The entry fee is R30 per person, which include a goodie bags from Pick ’n Pay. Grade 12 learners in the Kouga region will also be able to showcase their unique Matric Farewell dres-ses on the day during the Matric Dress 2012 competition. OUGA Express is once again looking for a baby to grace our front page of the last edition of the year – our Christmas edition on Thursday, December 20.

The Kouga Express RRAD Photography Christmas Baby Competition is aimed at making the day even more special for babies who are celebrating their first Christmas. The competition is therefore open to all babies who are younger than one year old on December 25, 2012 and who is resident in the Kouga.

To enter, parents must send a recent colour jumbo-size photograph of their baby with the details of the baby: name and surname, date of birth, residential address and contact details of the parents. Entries must reach our offices at 2 Corporate Park, 75 Da Gama Road, Jeffreys Bay before 4pm on Friday, November 23.

Entry is free of charge.

No e-mailed entries will be accepted. Computer printouts or photos larger or smaller than jumbo size will also not be accepted.

Parents can enter any recent photo for the competition. Entry photos do not need not have a Christmas theme, and baby’s face must be clearly visible. The winners of the competition will be re-photographed by RRAD Photography for the front cover of the newspaper.

The winner will be selected from the photographic entries by judges who will be representing the prize sponsors.

Entry photos will be selected, at the discretion of the Kouga Express Editor, to be published in the run-up to the finals. Not all the entries will be published in the Kouga Express.

Winners will have to be available between December 1 and 9 for the front-page shoot, which will be done

by RRAD Photography. The winner will also receive photos from this shoot on a CD as a keepsake of the event valued at R2 400. Curves in Jeffreys Bay will host their first annual Pink “Wag ’n Walk” on October 27 at the Kabeljous Park in celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“What better way to show your support than to walk wearing pink and be proud,” said Chezanne Todd from Curves.

According to Todd, the event is a family friendly walk of 5km, starting and ending at Kabeljous Park.

All proceeds raised from walkers will go toward the Pink Drive in a bid to keep a mobile mammography unit on the road.

All entry fees from the four-legged friends will be donated towards the Humansdorp SPCA.

The morning will start with late registration at 8.30am. The official walk will commence at 9.30am, with the fun continuing until noon. Competitions and lucky draws will take place at 11am.

Entry fee is R45 per person and children under the age of 12 walk for free.

Entry fee per canine companion is R15.

Early detection is the key to recovery in Breast Cancer OCTOBER is Breast Health Awareness Month and women all over the world are looking at ways to detect breast cancer early and optimise treatment.

The Radiological Society of South Africa (RSSA) stresses the importance of mammograms and how regular mammograms and breast examination can possibly save your life.

“Early diagnosis gives the cancer patient a higher chance of complete cure and less extensive surgery.

Early detection is a critically important factor in winning the battle against breast cancer,” explains Dr. Clive Sperryn, President of RSSA. Current statistics show that 1 in 29 South African women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. However, this statistic increases alarmingly in more westernised countries where the incidence is as high as 1 in 8. Of all the cancers, breast cancer is the most

common cancer in South African women, constituting more than 50% of all cancer diagnoses.

What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancerous) cells form in the tissues of the breast. It is considered a heterogeneous disease because it differs by individual, age group, and even the kinds of cells within the tumours itself. In breast cancer, malignant cells may invade or destroy nearby tissue if left untreated.

Symptoms of breast cancer include a new lump or mass. A painless, hard lump that has uneven edges is more likely to be cancer. However some cancers are tender, soft and rounded.

What are the symptoms?

“From the age of 40 we encourage all women to go for an annual mammogram, regardless of whether they find any symptoms – preventative care is the key objective. We al-

Giving back the gift of sight

HE Bureau for the Prevention of Blindness and SA National Council for the Blind’s Eye Care Services Division are celebrating 60 years of mobile outreach service to South Africa this year.

As part of their continuous efforts to eliminate avoidable blindness, they are coordinating and conducting various cataract blitzes in partnership with the provincial departments of health across South Africa during the month of October in order to put eye care services in the reach of under-serviced rural communities.

Each cataract surgery, which is performed in under 30 minutes, gives the gift of sight back to each patient – and the Bureau plans to be instrumental in giving this gift to as many as 600 people.

These blitzes take place as part of the Eye Care Awareness Month (ECAM) campaign. ECAM is a South African initiative held annually in the month of October in order to raise awareness about the importance of eye health, specifically around the prevention and treatment of avoidable blindness.

IN the past few weeks we have seen a high incidence of children with chickenpox, especially in preschools and day care centres.

Lots of parents have had queries and questions around the chickenpox vaccine and general concerns surrounding this childhood illness.

Chickenpox is usually a mild illness among children, particularly those under the age of twelve years, but serious complications because of the illness can occur.

Chickenpox is caused by the Varicella Zoster virus and causes flu like symptoms and an itchy rash that looks like blisters. The incubation period of the virus is about

10 – 14 days. Chickenpox is spread through respiratory droplets, like if the infected child sneezes or coughs close to you or if you touch the fluid from the blisters. A child is at its most contagious two days before the rash appears until all the blisters have crusted over or dried, which is about a week. Children with chickenpox need to be isolated at home for at least a week to protect their contacts. Pregnant women and immuno-compromised people are at most risk.

A chickenpox vaccine is available to be gi-ven from the age of 12 months. This vaccine can also be given to adults who have not had the illness before or working in a high risk environment, like preschools. Children, who have had

chickenpox before, do not need the vaccine, because they have lifelong immunity against chickenpox, but may still develop shingles later in life. A vaccinated child is protected against chickenpox and shingles.

If your child has been in contact with another child with confirmed chickenpox, the vaccine can still be given within 72 hours after exposure which can prevent the illness or make it less serious.

Parents should remember not to give Aspirin to a child with chickenpox – this may lead to a serious complication called Reyes syndrome.

Louise Panton from Kabeljauws writes: What kind of parents give their sons crossbows to ‘play’ with? hat were you thinking? These boys, Grade 7, walk around Kabeljauws killing birds with these crossbows.

For two months we have watched a pair of Dikkops nesting, hatching and caring for their two chicks and today, Sunday 30 September, two known boys who live in the suburb killed one of the parent Dikkops with an arrow from the crossbow. They claim they were trying to kill Starlings because they had been promised R5 for each Starling they kill.

Dikkops take only one mate for life and they are prime targets when sitting over their chicks. Whilst the one parent looks after the chicks the other one stands guard and collects food, but you wouldn’t be interested in that, would you. Your ignorance knows no bounds.

And these people probably think they are pillars of society.

You make me sick to my stomach. Why don’t you do target practice on one another.

Successful Rotary Spring Art Exhibition Dave Kan from the Rotary Club writes: The Rotary Club of Jefferys Bay held a most enjoyable and social Art Exhibition evening on Friday, September 28 at InFood, No 10 Da Gama Road. Prior to the event wooden trays were sold to interested parties who were to decorate the tray according to a theme.

The theme of the Exhibition being “Peace through Service” and all were encouraged to base their presentation around this theme.

The intent of the Rotary club was to raise money for various Rotary projects and to recognise and encourage artistic talent in the Kouga region. Rotary supports the use of art as a catalyst for promoting the values of responsible living, service and peace.

Artists and paying guests were invited to attend a cheese, wine and snacks evening at which all were encouraged to peruse the art works on display. Individually numbered auction slips where also provided to interested guests whereby the opportunity of performing a “silent monetary bid” could be made on any work of art that took their fancy.

The follow up being that other interested parties could out bid the amount placed on the item of their fancy.

The resulting works of art varied from surf to beads, trees to sky, metal and much more that made for some very enjoyable discussion.

The Rotary Club of Jeffreys Bay would like to take this opportunity of thanking all participants and guests for making the evening worthwhile. The funds raised will further assist Rotary in their ongoing projects.

Donderdagoggend baie vroeg het my man die geyser leeg laat loop deur ’n tuinslang te gebruik. Wat oorgebly het onder die geyser was hierdie modder bruin water met klippies en allerhande gemors binne.

Die vraag wat ek nou vra is: hoe kan die munisipaliteit volhou deur aan die publiek te sê dat ons drinkwater skoon is?

Hier is ’n duikelike bewys van hoe die koue water lyk wat in ons geysers inloop. Dit is absoluut skandalig en dit is hoogtyd dat die publiek moet kennis neem hoe Jeffreysbaai se water daarna uitsien.

Ek het al my wasmasjien gaan verkoop omdat al my ligte wasgoed vir die afgelope agt jaar met donkerbruin kolle uit die masjien kom. Nodeloos om te sê dat ek verniet ’n nuwe wasmasjien gekoop het. My wasgoed het nog steeds met bruin kolle uitgekom wat ek met die hand elke keer moet uitwas.

Ons geyser is nou 2jaar oud.

Die Oostelike Provinsie het twee uit die drie titels verower. Gina Smith het die o.17-afdeling en Crystal Hulett die o.15-afdeling vir meisies gewen. Kai Woolf (10), van Jeffreysbaai, het die eerste plek net-net gemis en moes die titel afstaan aan Sophia Bell van Durban in die o.13-afdeling.

In die afdeling vir seuns is Matt McGillivray van Jeffreysbaai as die o.15-seunswenner aangewys ná ’n goeie vertoning oor die duur van die kompetisie. Hy is ook die wenner van die All Aboard Surfer, die beste branderplankryer van die byeenkoms.

Daarmee het hy ’n reiskaartjie gewen ter waarde van R20 000. McGil-

livray het boonop die beste “airshow”-vertoning gewen met R5 000 prysgeld geborg deur Red Bull.

Benji Brand van die WP is die o.17wenner en het ook Citroën Port Elizabeth se prys vir die hoogste telling in ’n uitdunronde gebuit.

Hy is nou R3 000 ryker ná sy vertoning op Dag 1.

Die OP was ook die wenners van die spangeestoekenning.
