Club Torque Congratulations to the Jaguar Car Club of Victoria on their successful 50th Jaguar National Rally held at Albury/Wodonga recently. About a dozen SA cars took part in the event. Moira & I drove the XK120 over and back in convoy with John Williams in his XK120. The cars performed very well. On arrival in Albury we were greeted with a thunderstorm and heavy rain but the weather was fine for the rest of the weekend. The display day and Concours took place on the Saturday with a social evening that night featuring Abba music with a band called Babba. Long-time club member Ray Smithers celebrated his 80th birthday on stage with Babba! Congratulations Ray. Sunday involved a sporting activity or a drive through some picturesque Victorian towns to a winery for lunch. Sunday evening was the formal presentation dinner with trophy presentations. WA also promoted the 2020 rally at the dinner. A number of SA members then took part in the enjoyable post rally tour taking in two nights in Yarrawonga and three nights in Echuca. We continued to get glowing comments about our SA Rally last year from so many participants. . The 2020 Jaguar National Rally will be held in WA from 27th March – 4th April using a similar format to that used by SA last year. It will be in two parts with about 4 days around Perth and 4 days around Busselton 250km south. We were well supported by WA for our rally and we hope to have a large number of members going to WA in 2020 so begin planning now. Online bookings should become available in October. We arrived back in Adelaide for the April general meeting where guest speaker Martin Haese made an excellent presentation. Martin covered a range of topics including his passion for British cars and his interest in attracting Formula E racing to Adelaide. Thank you Martin. The following weekend we took part

The President’s Rap

along with many other club members in the very popular McLaren Vale Vintage & Classic. Young children and spectators were delighted to see us in Batman masks for the parade! We have been pleased to see a large number of club members trying out the new administration database: TidyHQ. This year we will manage our membership renewals through TidyHQ which will streamline the process considerably saving many hours of work by our Membership Secretary. All members with emails will receive a message early in June with instructions on how to renew their membership simply and efficiently. For those members without emails or computers there will still be the manual system available. They will receive a renewal letter and invoice early in June also. We encourage all members to have a go at reviewing and updating their data on TidyHQ and becoming familiar with using it. Bookings and payments for the JDCSA Annual Dinner on Saturday 27th July can also be done through TidyHQ. Please ask for assistance with TidyHQ if you need it. Register secretaries may be able to assist at register meetings.

At the general meetings in June and July our logbook officer Dave Burton will be processing logbook renewals for members who have renewed their membership. Membership expires on 30th June and must be renewed to retain club registration and a valid logbook. The most expedient process for Dave is for you to pay your membership online and post your log book and registration to the club enclosing a stamped self addressed envelope. As the membership renewal is on line the turnaround will be quicker than previous years. There are many motoring events coming up in the near future and it is great to see the continued large participation of members. Planning is well underway for SA Jag Day which will be held on Sunday 20th October at Civic Park Modbury. Enjoy safe motoring,

Julian

Editor’s Column

Welcome to a jam-packed edition of Classic Marque this month as we all enjoy the last fleeting instances of beautiful weather before we start to batten down for winter. Of course, we could certainly do with the rain, but lets not wish the sunshine away too soon.

of preserving things as best as (in) humanly possible. That said, I think we should all aim to pull the Jags (or Porsches or Mercedes or whatever else is hiding in our garages) out a little more often this winter and enjoy them - after all, that’s what they’re made for.

Many of you will no doubt bring the Jags out no matter what the weather - and I applaud you for it. I was reading an article last week in Unique Cars (online here) about the phenomenon of the “taxidermied” car - one that hardly ever comes out save for that very special (or very particular) occasion. I must admit I’ve been guilty of this with a number of vehicles I’ve owned over the years, and working in the museum industry, I’m in the game

I digress - this edition is a rather big one. So big in fact that I’ve had to hold over my feature of the new I-PACE I drove late last month to the next edition. Something to look forward to for sure.

from Pretoria, some brilliant photos from both the 2019 National Rally in Albury-Wodonga and the McLaren Vale Vintage & Classic, and brief look at a forthcoming restoration reveal of a very special Daimler being lovingly cared for by the National Museum of Australia. Oh, and Jaguar won in the Formula E last month too! I hope you enjoy this edition, and keep those photos and stories coming. I love not being able to fit everything into one issue! Happy motoring,

You don’t have to wait long to enjoy this edition, though. We’ve got a great behind the scenes look at Anne-Marie Pijanka’s experience on the set of Escape

Jaguar victory in Rome Evans Hails Maiden Formula-E Win for Panasonic Jaguar Racing Chris Soulsby Motorsport Week Mitch Evans has hailed his maiden ABB FIA Formula E Championship race victory at last weekend's Rome EPrix, securing his first career win since 2016 when driving in GP2. The Jaguar Racing driver triumphed in a 45-minute + 1 lap street fight in the Italian capital, involved in a race-long duel with Andre Lotterer on the 2,870kmlong Circuito Cittadino dell'EUR track. After an impressive qualifying performance, Evans started from second for the race, and despite having a better getaway on the front row of the grid than pole-sitter Lotterer, followed the German DS Techeetah driver for most of the EPrix. Arming and deploying Attack Mode with just over 19-minutes of racing remaining to get a 12%, 25kW boost in power, Evans was able to dispatch of Lotterer, overtaking into Turn 11 with 15-minutes to go. Carefully managing his energy usage and fending off two strong late-race charges from the trailing driver, Evans held on, taking

his first race win since the 2016 GP2 Austria Feature Race when driving for Campos Racing while also delivering Jaguar with a breakthrough Formula E victory. "This feels beautiful," said Evans after the chequered flag. "It was a fantastic race. "The first few laps were tricky in the wet. After the red flag I just wanted to stay steady. From early on I felt comfortable and my energy management was ahead of target so we decided to use it when it mattered. THE BOTTOM LINE "I wanted to use Attack Mode when Lotterer didn’t have it to gain that power difference. We had great pace from the beginning,

so I really felt confident out there. "It’s been years since I had a win, so this really feels amazing. I’m so happy for the team, for everyone at Panasonic Jaguar Racing for all their hard work and to Jaguar Land Rover for their support over the past three seasons. This has really come at a great time." By winning in Rome which marks the start of Formula E's European leg of the 2018/19 season, Evans became the all-electric single seater series' seventh different winner in as many races, jumping into fourth in the Drivers' Championship with 61 points as a result. Formula E will return on April 27 for the Paris E-Prix.

Rare Daimler Laundaulette to lead new life 1954 Royal Tour vehicle restoration nearing completion by National Museum of Australia Dane Wilden Classic Marque Ten years after the National Museum of Australia (NMA) acquired a 1948 Daimler landaulette used in Queen Elizabeth II’s debut royal tour of Australia, most — but not all — of the mysteries surrounding this historic vehicle have been unravelled. The Museum has blended traditional coach building techniques and near-lost trade skills with modern technologies to make the Daimler fit for display. Work has progressed on the interior seats, timber work, paint and body work. As works continue towards completion the excitement builds. The Daimler arrived at the Museum in 2009, acquired from a private collector in South Australia. Years of dry storage had take a toll on the interior and exterior of the vehicle, and conservators are working to restore the vehicle whilst retaining as much of the original equipment as possible. This vehicle is one of two intact survivors of a fleet of six Daimler DE 36hp models originally commissioned by Australian Prime Minister Ben Chifley in 1948 for the proposed 1949 Royal Tour of Australia by King George VI. By sourcing these very British cars, it seems the Australian government sought to preserve ties with British industry and culture. A classic choice, the Daimler Motor Company in Coventry had enjoyed many years of royal patronage and undertook highly regarded bespoke coach-built commissions for ceremonial purposes. This imposing four-ton landaulette vehicle was fabricated by coachbuilders Hooper and Company on a purpose-built Daimler chassis powered by a ‘straight eight’ (eight cylinders in line) engine. Almost six metres long, it had luxurious interior fittings such as an electrically operated sun roof and windows, cream Bedford cord and blue leather upholstery, a walnut dash, roller-sprung silk window blinds, engraved glass light fittings and ashtrays, and thick fitted carpets. The folding landau section would allow the occupants to be easily seen, yet give some protection from the heat and dust of an Australian summer. To the shock and disappointment of many, however, the tour was cancelled at the very last minute owing to the King’s poor health. Extensive plans had already been made — the fleet was completed, crated and waiting to be dispatched to Sydney. Under these circumstances, the Australian government was required to fulfil its financial obligation to the Daimler Motor Company.

Jack Beasley, the Australian High Commissioner in London, was able to sell two Daimlers to the Maharajah of Mysore in India, but the high tax payable on luxury cars did not make these large and ostentatious vehicles attractive purchases in post-war Britain. The cars were modified to suit ceremonial requirements; at almost two metres in height, they were described as ‘too great to enable them to go under many of England’s low bridges’.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Still lacking buyers, the remaining four Daimlers were shipped to Australia in 1949, where they became part of the government car pool and were used sparingly by the Governor-General, Sir W illi am Mc K el l. A ft er a no t he r

postponement of the Royal Tour in 1952, the four cars were recalled for duty for the attractive young Queen two years later. Over the past ten years, the NMA has worked tirelessly with staff and volunteers to see the Vice Regal Daimler restored to its former glory. Consulting experts and master craftsmen and women from around Australia, conservator Nathan Pharaoh from the NMA reports that the vehicle should be ready for assembly in the coming months. Following final assembly and mechanical testing, the vehicle will be unveiled to the public in full Vice-Regal glory in the second half of 2019. Keep your eyes on Classic Marque for a full feature soon.

He founded a national retail chain, managed Rundle Mall and was 78th Lord Mayor of Adelaide until November 2018. Martin has had a lifelong interest in classic motoring and is a former Chairman of the Bay to Birdwood. He has owned several Jaguars over the years and currently has a pristine 420G. Martin is Chairman of the Premier’s Climate Change Council and will commence as CEO of Business SA in May 2019. Martin’s well illustrated presentation was in three main parts: Motoring: Martin referred to his interest in 1960s British cars and mentioned about 8, including 3 Jaguars that he had owned over the years. He talked about his involvement in Bay to Birdwood and how that event ranks world wide and the need for historic car enthusiasts to support the event which is unique to SA. Mayor: In his time as Mayor, Martin met with many people and learnt more about SA’s rich motoring heritage and the potential that that, together with events such as B2B provide for tourism. For example, because of Adelaide’s credentials, Singaporeans come to B2B.

General Meeting Minutes

Martin concluded by acknowledging the value he has had from being involved in the application of new technology as well as heritage issues and historic motoring. ‘It has been an interesting time.’ The nature of questions and Martin’s replies reinforced that his presentation was very well received. Julian thanked Martin for his excellent presentation. Martin was able to stay for the rest of the meeting and continued discussions with a number of people. Previous Minutes: Minutes of the general meetings held on Tuesday 2 April and Tuesday 5 March 2019 had been previously circulated and were accepted as an accurate record of those meetings. That means that here are about 300 members yet to do so. - There is an issue in going in via the website. - Jag Day is being managed by the system. - The annual dinner will soon be on the system. President’s Report: Julian has just returned from the successful National Rally at Albury/Wodonga in the XK 120. The rally was a two day event with a post rally tour and a small SA contingent attended. WA will host the 2020 rally from 26 March to 4 April and it will be a similar format to the SA hosted rally held in 2018. The 2020 rally will celebrate 85 years of Jaguar and a brochure is available.

Vice President’s Report: NTR Future: Martin talked about the future for electric powered and autonomous vehicles and suggested that there would still be a place for historic vehicles in the future. Developments such as Formula E racing provide the opportunity to engage the younger generation in motorsport and become a major event on the world stage.

With all our cars parked under cover We headed to the 3rd floor Restaurant, where we also had a magnificent view of the race track. We pooled our betting money together and selected teams to place our Bets. We were doing real fine until the last race where we put all of our winnings Into the hands of Alan Davis and Gary Monrad. You guessed it, we lost the lot. The big winner on the night was Daphne Charman, who collected on every race except One. She had to have security escort her to her car at the end of the night. If you haven't been to Globe Derby, it's a great night out, especially for families. Bob Charman
