Club Torque It is hard to believe that

the 49th Jaguar National Rally is now over. It was great to see a large number of the interstate participants also staying on for the McLaren Vale Vintage & Classic. Congratulations go to Rally Director Di Adamson; key organisers Peter Thomas, Suzanne Jarvis and Roger Adamson; the whole rally committee; and the many club members who volunteered for various duties, helped people fix cars, and supported the rally in many different ways. It was a great team effort. Feedback so far has been very positive about the

The President’s Rap changed format of the rally and the large numbers of participants demonstrates the popularity. Overall we had between 40 - 50 XKs involved, and the XJC group also organised a special get together. However, there is no doubt that some aspects of the rally that could have been even better and we are keen to review all the feedback once it has been returned. Thank you to the whole club for your support of this great event. We also thank all the rally participants for making

this event so enjoyable and supportive of Jaguar motoring. Our generous sponsors also deserve special thanks for supporting the Rally. More detailed reports will be provided at General Meetings and in later Classic Marque issues.

Next year’s 50th Jaguar National Rally organised by JCCV will be held in Albury Wodonga March 29th – April 1st 2019.

Club Torque Hello all,

Editor’s Column friends in the club, and indeed around Australia to enjoy.

Welcome to another edition of Classic Marque - a special extended edition celebrating the success of the 2018 Jaguar National Rally, organised by our club.

Many thank s to all involved in the organisation and execution of what was an extremely successful event all round, but a special thanks to those who have contributed photos and reports for publication—you were my eyes and ears on the ground during the rally, so thank you for producing some wonderful content for our

The special pictorial report in this extended edition of the magazine will be split across two issues. I had literally thousands of photographs to comb through, so I appreciate your patience in waiting for this magazine to hit the (digital) presses, albeit al little behind schedule—thank you for your understanding. Make sure you don’t miss the next issue of Classic Marque, either, where we’ll cover the second ‘leg’ of the rally (the post-rally tour) through the

gorgeous Fleurieu Peninsula! Please also show your support for our National Rally sponsors, advertisements for which you can find throughout this magazine. That’s enough from me—I’ll let you relive all the excellent moments from the first half of the rally! Happy motoring,

Dane

Jaguar calls on Canberra to end petrol car sales by 2030 “Australia should follow the lead of nations like Britain,” says Australian Managing Director Ben Packham The Australian Prestige car company Jaguar Land Rover has called for an end to the sale of petrol and diesel cars in Australia as soon as 2030 to give certainty to investors in the vehicle, energy and infrastructure sectors. Jaguar Land Rover Australia managing director Matthew Wiesner said many countries had recognised the shift to electric vehicles was inevitable, and the federal government needed to manage our transition. “It would certainly help both industry and consumers to know when a hard transition date might come into effect,” Mr Wiesner said.

Above:

Jaguar’s soon-to-be-released I-PACE electric SUV. Jaguar Land Rover Australia wants the Federal Government to commit to a timeline to phase out the sale of vehicles with internal combustion engines.

Australia was lagging behind the rest of the world in electric vehicle adoption.

“It is about understanding what the rules are for a future development in this space. That doesn’t exist today. (Industry) needs some leadership and it needs some direction.”

The YouGov poll found more than three-quarters of respondents believed politicians should support electric vehicle adoption by trialling new tax incentives.

He said Australia should follow the lead of nations like Britain, which has banned the sale of internal combustion engines after 2040; or Germany and India, which will phase out petrol and diesel cars from 2030.

Mr Wiesner said Jaguar Land Rover was not asking for specific subsidies for electric vehicles, but believed Australia’s luxury car tax and the 5 per cent tariff on vehicle imports should both be scrapped, as they were put in place to support a car industry that no longer existed.

He said a ban on the sale of new petrol or diesel cars should apply only to urban drivers, as rural and remote Australians would continue to need petrol and diesel vehicles because of the long distances they needed to travel. “You can’t disadvantage anybody in this process. That’s absolutely vital.” Jaguar Land Rover, which is launching a new electric SUV later this year, commissioned a poll of 1000 Australians on their attitudes to electric vehicles, finding 68 per cent of respondents believed

Electric vehicle-specific incentives were becoming “less of an issue”, as new electric cars were coming on to the market “in segments that will be very affordable”, he said.

THE BOTTOM LINE the Mr Wiesner said he believed government was yet to come to terms with the implications of the coming surge in electric vehicle ownership. “We don’t see any evidence of that yet. In fact, quite the opposite. This is a very new discussion and quite frankly they

haven’t been giving it consideration whatsoever.

any

“The world is making these investments. Australia has no say. This is where we are going. But what that does mean is: how do the providers of this technology manage the timing? How do we ready for these future investments?” “It is very important that we have a vision from Canberra.” He said the there was a lot of “lazy capital” around the world that could be harnessed to roll out electric vehicle-charging infrastructure. Investors in energy infrastructure also needed greater clarity on the demand they would face from electric vehicle owners, he said. A recent New Zealand study warned that electric vehicle chargers “put a large electrical load on the network”, with even 2.4kW ‘trickle’ chargers adding the equivalent of one extra home to the grid. Club Mailbox Hello Philip and all the team (with special thanks to Di as leader) behind organising the rally in all its iterations. Barbara and I were most impressed indeed - sorting this event would have been a logistical nightmare but there was no hint of that at all - you as a team made it look easy! The publications too were superb and we’ll keep them in our treasure trove. I think it’s really quite heartening how a common interest such as our unique and artistic cars can keep friendships alive for decades we saw pals from 40 years ago and it was as though it was yesterday. The Jag club people are very nice and down to earth - we do look forward to sharing more time with them. Anyway, well done indeed you’ll be a little battle scarred no doubt but have every reason to be very proud of creating a model event which was of great complexity to conceive and administer. We expect you will receive many congratulations but certainly don’t mind sharing our thoughts with other members if you want to do that. Cheers,

Letters and Correspondence or 28mpg (Tremec T5 does make a difference!). Sorry we missed the McLaren Vale weekend however the Rally itself was exceptional and we would like to congratulate your entire team, most particularly Di Adamson, for the extraordinary effort you all put in to make it the very best we have attended (probably 12 in the past 18 years). So thanks again and please pass on our congratulations to all that were involved. Very best regards, David & Robyn Hughes. Hi Julian and SA colleagues, Just a quick thanks on behalf of the XK group to again say thanks for a wonderful Rally – we only did the Barossa section but thought it was great and we hope you might have got better weather for the Fleurieu section. The visit to the late Carl Lindner’s Collection of Classic Jaguars was outstanding – you could travel the world to find a better collection of classic Jaguars! Thanks also for lining up Gavin King and Scott Shearman as guest speakers for the XK dinner at the Weintal Resort– both were really interesting for different reasons!

THE BOTTOM LINE

Robin Turner Hi Julian,

Well the "old girl" got us home without further ado! 4,350kms at exactly 10 litres per 100kms

I have a write-up the Rally in this month’s Cat’s Whiskers for those who get to see it through our inter-Club magazine swap arrangements.

We now look forward to the Victorian Rally at Albury and perhaps another great turnout of XK Jaguars and their owners. Best regards, Brian Johnston XK 150S President JDCC (Canberra) To my fellow club members, I wish to take this opportunity to formally thank all of you for your kind thoughts and condolences with the sudden passing of my dear Elly. She just celebrated her 71st birthday. Although only having been a member since 2014 Elly obviously made an impact on her fellow members especially when she joined in to come on a couple of the extended outings. Loosing Elly after 49 years plus will obviously change my life forever, but I take comfort in having the support of so many friends with similar interests. Once again many thanks on behalf of myself, our son Paul and my extended Family. Kind regards, Roland Donders Mannum
