Club Torque The President’s Rap It is with much sadness that we recently heard that two of our valued club members had passed away. Bill Jones was a true gentleman who was passionate about his cars and we pass on our thoughts and wishes to Heather and family. Brian Walker had enormous technical knowledge about Jaguars and was a great support to many in the club and we pass on our thoughts and wishes to Sue and family. The club will miss both of these valued members. At our April general meeting Di and Roger Adamson showed the presentation they gave at the recent National Rally at Pt Stephens. The video received a lot of positive feedback for our hosting of the National Rally in 2018. Please keep April 12th – 20th 2018 free so you can be involved in this great event. I know there are some members who are already working furiously preparing their cars so they are ready to take part. Moira and I recently took part in the McLaren Vale Vintage & Classic and we were honoured to chat with Alan Jones as he was

admiring the Jaguars. He was interested in the racing history of our XK120. The parade moved at enough pace to avoid overheating and we enjoyed our afternoon at Fox Creek Winery. Also during April, Carl Lindner hosted a Jagtastic afternoon with a visit to his car museum at Tanunda. There are a number of great events over the next month or two that members may be interested in. One of these is the British Classics Tour on May 7th at Victor Harbor. Other events include the Copper Coast Classic Cavalcade, Coast to Coast, and in June the Tanunda to Tarlee run. Please refer to the Calendar on our club web site for details of events. Our club patron Ian Webber has decided it is soon time for him to retire from the role so the club is currently in the process of finding a new patron (Ed: Suggestions from club members are welcomed - please email Julian or Phil Prior directly). Don’t forget that membership and Logbook renewals are due by the end of June.

Editor’s Column

some excellent pictures to boot; great job Phil!

I’ve (barely) recovered from the bumper April issue of Classic Marque, and am thrilled to be delivering another excellent issue to you. We start the issue on a sombre note, with the passing of two club members, well loved in their respective registers and by the club overall. Bill Jones and Brian Walker will be missed, and our condolences are with their friends and family at this difficult time. Vice President Phil Prior has prepared an excellent report on the 2017 XJC Tour, which covered a significant part of New South Wales, prior to and following the 2017 Jaguar National Rally at Port Stephens. An interesting read with

Ron Palmer recounts the annual Multivalve Register night at Solitaire Jaguar, which I was fortunate enough to attend myself; a wonderful night with top-notch hospitality. A special thanks to Solitaire Jaguar for hosting, and their continued support of the club. You’ll find our cover story on pages 16-20. A special thanks again to Solitaire Jaguar for providing the XE, sales consultant Dan O’Grady for his expertise, and photographer Mark White from Project M Photography for shooting the gorgeous car. But, as always, that’s not all! On page 23 you’ll find a report by our Logbook Secretary Dave Burton on an update about ongoing changes to the Historic Registration system in this state; an important read for anyone with a logbooked Jag. In Memoriam Bill Jones We are all saddened with the passing of Bill Jones. Not only the Compact Register who will miss his charm and wit, but his detailed knowledge of Jaguars, and quite honestly anything mechanical, but many members within the club over the past 22 years. His own daily 1959 Mark 2 was brilliant with its electric XJ40 seats, integrated air conditioning, power door locks and electric windows all wrapped up in a wonderfully crafted centre console. A measure of Bill's attention to detail was when he went back to trade school to learn how to "emboss" leather so that his doors on the inside were exactly as they were on the original Mark 2's. Bill was also a long time member of the Alfa Romeo club (28 years) where he owned, over the years, a large number of them.

Brian Walker

After a short illness sadly Brian passed away 14th April, 2017. A Member of an informal group of XK owners in the 1970’s before the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia was formed, he was a founding member, and held membership card no. 10. Brian was E-Type Register Secretary for more than 10 years in the 1980’s/1990’s.

In between these events he completely built a Triumph TR4 and more recently constructed a Ford GT40. But, he still had his Ferrari to drive on good weather days.

Next he bought a V12, and helped revive the V12 Register in the 1990’s/2000’s. His knowledge of V12 Jaguars was well known and called upon by owners throughout Australia and New Zealand, for advice and problem solving.

Bill was also into WW2 Aircraft having been to Wanarka in N.Z. for the Air show in 2012 where he had a flight in a twin cockpit Spitfire. Again in N.Z. in 2014 with Geoff & Margaret Thomas they both had a flight (aerobatic) in a WW2 Mustang.

In the early 2000’s Brian bought an X308 Sovereign, and with his wife Sue, regularly attended Multivalve Meetings.

His other great interest was music, in particular jazz, and as many of you know he was part of a jazz ensemble – he played the saxophone. Bill originally trained with the PMG Department as a radio technician and later he went on to teach at TAFE and spent time in China and India teaching.

Brian was helpful at car talk discussions including preventative maintenance. He participated in all things Multivalve, day trips, and long weekends away. Brian & Sue represented the Club at many National Rallies over the years.

Club Torque Jaguar Drivers Club of SA General Meeting 4th April 2017 Opening: President, Julian Lugg, welcomed everyone and opened the meeting at 7.35pm. Visitors and New Members: There were no new members or visitors present. Apologies: Malcolm Adamson, Robin and Joan Bullock, Peter and Judy Goodale, Ron Westren, Rod and Peggy Davis, Jo Orford, Tony Human, Bill Jones, Ron and Rosie Bailey, Alan Baker, Bill and Barb Mayman and Frank Vandermeyden. Previous Minutes: Minutes of the general meeting held on Tuesday 7 March 2017 had been previously circulated and were accepted as an accurate record of that meeting. Business Arising from the Previous Minutes: Welfare Report: Julian reported that Bill Jones is in hospital and Jeanne Brown is recovering from a fall. Patron Ian Webber will stand down this year and Julian will welcome suggestions for a successor. President’s Report: Julian reported that March had been a busy month with good representation from the Club in many events including the national rally, the McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic event, Clipsal and the twilight cruise. Most of the events were portrayed well in the bumper edition of Classic Marque. 2018 will be 50 years since the release of the XJ6 and there are plans to recognize that anniversary. Di Adamson will be the guest speaker tonight and will show us the presentation for the 2018 National Rally which is to be hosted by JDCSA. Vice President’s Report: Phil Prior told us about the recent XJC tour which covered about 3500km in 12 days in a hop on/hop off format. Three couples did the whole trip and the highlight was driving the Mount Panorama circuit, albeit at 60km/h. Look for a full report in the May CM. Jag Day this year will be on Sunday 15 October at the Brighton Secondary School. Secretary’s Report: Alan Bartram reported: McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic event was a good day with good representation from JDCSA.

General Meeting

member in 2016 has been awarded to Ron Beaver. Treasurer: Tim White spoke to a comprehensive proposal to increase in Club annual membership fees by $5. The proposal was unanimously supported when put to the vote. Membership Officer: Daphne Charman advised that she will begin work on membership renewals soon. It was noted that renewals will be able to be done in conjunction with log book processing at the June and July general meetings. Editor: Dane Wilden explained that there had been a slight delay in delivery of the April CM which gained an extra 8 pages to cover the busy month in March, especially Clipsal. Julian thanked Dane and contributors for the ‘great pictorial record.’ Alan Bartram reminded members that the Club receives copies of magazines from a number other clubs and copies are held in the library. You can also log in and view on line. Conditional Registration: Dave Burton advised that we do not yet know what the new arrangements will be. Therefore you should get your three year inspections done before 30 June. Most registers have someone who can do those inspections. ACJC: Peter Holland reported that ACJC is quiet at the moment and that he is preparing to hand over the representation on ACJC to Tim White in time for the August meeting. Events Coordination: Jim Komaromi reminded members that comprehensive Club Calendar information is provided on the website. He also asked that event organisers keep him up to date. Register Reports: Compact meeting ‘next Tuesday’. XJ meeting ‘next Wednesday’. Multivalve. 53 attended last Tuesday meeting at Solitaire. E,F and GT. Meeting on 20 April at Richmond’s. Goodwood Revival night on 17 September in conjunction with SCCSA. SS and Daimler. NTR XK 789 meeting on Wed 5th at Rod and Peg’s.

Regalia: There is no coordinator at present and expressions of interest were sought especially in the run up to the National Rally. Register secretaries will be asked to take several items to gauge interest among their members.

MSCA: Barry Kitts advised that MGs will be competing on the Easter weekend and the following weekend will be a historic race meeting. Winton will celebrate the 70 year anniversary of the release of the XK. Library: Tom Brindal has freebies and Lyons’ biography and DVDs for members to borrow. New Business: Trevor Norley provided information for the Barossa HVC’s 40th anniversary run from Bethany to Tanunda and Tarlee on Sunday 4 June. Geoff Wilden advised that the SB rally will leave the Torrens Parade Ground ’early on 27 May’. He would like a banner for their car, ‘Swede Dreams’ to acknowledge the Club’s sponsorship and further donations are welcome. Julian noted the great level of Club support for the Drivers’ parade at Clipsal. 2018 National Rally Presentation: Di Adamson opened her presentation by noting that in 2017 there were 228 registrations and just over 200 cars on display. That gives us a useful guide in planning for the 2018 rally. Di then showed the excellent promotional presentation that has been prepared for the 2018 rally. Julian thanked Di and all who went to the Barossa to make the video which will be on the Club’s website together with promotional brochures. Interstate XK owners have expressed interest in celebrating 70 years since the XK release at the 2018 rally. Closure: After thanking the XK 7,8,9 register for supper, Julian closed the meeting at 8.45pm.

The Ed.’s Inbox Keys… They weren't in my pockets. Suddenly I realised I must have left them in the car. Frantically, I headed for the car park. My wife has scolded me many times for leaving my keys in the car's ignition. She was afraid that the car could be stolen. As I looked around the car park, I realised she was right. The car park was empty. I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen. Then I made the most difficult call of all to my wife:............."I left my keys in the car and it's been stolen."

What’s this pile of wood? A bookcase? A bed frame? They’re actually components of a Morgan Plus 4!

I must admit that when I collected the XE, I expected the standard, luxurious ride one expects from a Jaguar, with acceptable handling characteristics, and impressive fuel consumption. Instead, what I received was a bit of a shock. The XE exhibits superb handling characteristics for a small luxury sedan. Lightweight aluminium architecture and a 50:50 weight distribution, coupled with a sophisticated and dynamic sports suspension system in the R-SPORT, means that the XE exhibits incredible agility through winding hills roads, THE providing excellent feedback through offcamber corners. The electric powerassisted steering is direct and wellweighted at speed, but wonderfully light when manoeuvring into tight suburban parking spaces.

The two litre ‘Ingenium’ diesel engine would be my pick of the four cylinder power plants (unless the 250kW Supercharged V6 S was available!), as it balances economy and power remarkably well, averaging a claimed 4.2l/100km. Although based on an older Ford design, the engine delivers a smooth 132kW of power, but the real delight is the 430Nm of torque, best accessed in the 2000-2750 RPM range. The XE 20d R-SPORT surprised me. A friend remarked that it felt, and looked, less like a car, and more like an Italian leather shoe. I think his analogy insinuated that the XE isn’t just a car. In fact, it isn’t just a Jag. It’s an accessory. And this one had all the bells and whistles to go with it. With the amount of technology crammed into a relatively compact package, it’s excellent value for money. You’d easily pay $20k more for a boring German.

Log Book Update All of us are eagerly awaiting the revisions to the Historic Vehicles Regulations, but we cannot presume what the alterations may be, and they are apparently not going to be released until July of this year. As you should be aware, all Log Books expire on 30 June each year, and until you renew your JDC Membership (renewal forms will be mailed to you shortly) you cannot be issued with a Log Book renewal, or new Log Book. It is also important to note that (at the time of writing this note) after 30 June, if your last vehicle Inspection was more than 3 years ago, we are not able to issue a new, or update your current Log Book, hence you cannot legally drive your Historic Vehicle, unless you apply for a special permit.

Authorised Club Inspectors and their phone numbers are listed at the front of Classic Marque. We will be offering to issue/renew Log Books at our June and July General Meetings. If you wish to take up this offer, please (although we may have a JP present) prepare your Statutory Declaration, have your Inspection up to date, and bring your existing Log Book and CURRENT registration papers to the Meeting. The point therefore, is, if your 3 yearly inspection is due soon, drive your vehicle to an inspector and get it done before June 30 to avoid any delays and inconvenience in obtaining a Log Book for the next financial year.
