Classic Marque Classic Marque is the official magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia. The opinions/views expressed in published articles are wholly those of the respective authors, and are not necessarily those of Jaguar, the Editor, the Club, or the Members. Club Torque The President’s Rap The 2017 Clipsal 500 Adelaide event recognised Jaguar 60th anniversary of Le Mans when an Ecurie Ecosse D-Type (Ron Flockhart/ Ivor Bueb) won the event in 1957. D-Types finished in positions 1,2,3,4 and 6 in the 24 hour race. The recognition included a display of nearly 60 Jaguars and Daimlers covering a wide range of models.

It is pleasing to see the number of new members who are joining our club. We are continuing to promote events & activities through avenues such as strong Registers, on the website, on Facebook, and with attendance at multi car functions like Coffee & Cars. We are also considering ways to attract more younger members to our club.

The Parade of Drivers around the track on Sunday also featured open top Jaguars (roadsters and dropheads). Thank you to Di Adamson for coordinating and thank you to all members who put their cars on display or took part in the Parade of Drivers. It was a great promotion of the Jaguar marque.

Thank you to those members who have suggested guest speakers for our general meetings and we will program a number of them throughout the year. National Rally 2018 planning is well underway so keep the dates April 12th – 20th 2018 available to join in. The Rally will also

feature a national gathering of XKs to recognise the 70th anniversary of the showing of the new XK120 (with the revolutionary XK engine) at the 1948 London Motor Show at Earl’s Court. On a personal note, I recently had correspondence from the son of a previous owner (of our XK 120) who was able to send some old photos and fill in some more history of the car. He had recognised a photo of the car online (presumably from our own Classic Marque magazine) as I had kept the original registration number.

Club Torque It’s certainly going to be a busy month for the club - I guess they call it “Mad March” for a reason! Amongst the standard smattering of Register meetings and club gatherings, there are a few significant events this month, the largest of which being the 2017 Clipsal 500. This year, Jaguar is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the stunning Le Mans Victory in 1957, as elaborated upon by our President in his column. The celebrations include a display of over 50 Jaguars supplied by the club, in addition to 28 convertibles being used in the driver’s parade before the big race on Sunday. Your very own Editor will also be participating, in a 2017 F-Type V6S convertible, very kindly supplied by Solitaire Jaguar.

Editor’s Column

Aside from the Clipsal, there is the “Cats on the Prowl” twilight hills cruise on Saturday 11th March, organised by Peter Clarke (see opposite) - it’s sure to be a lovely evening, and a good excuse to give the Jag a squirt through the hills.

stories from members who attend the multitude of events this month! Make sure you’ve got your camera handy, take some great photos, and have a go at writing a short paragraph about your experiences your club magazine will be all the better for it!

There’s also the Moonta Show and Shine (Sunday 12th), the Historic Vehicle Gathering in the parklands (Sunday 19th), and of course the XJC Tour (21st-29th) coinciding with the 2017 Jaguar National Rally at Port Stephens, NSW.

This month’s edition is packed full of Jag stories and articles from around the country and around the world, so grab a cup of coffee, sit down, and enjoy!

Details for all of these events can be found in the club calendar at the back of Classic Marque, and online at www.jdcsa.com.au.

Rare XJR-15 for sale - right Historic Registration here in Australia! overhaul - Minister provides update Dane Wilden Classic Marque

Scott Newman Motor

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Stephen Mullighan MP took to Facebook to voice his thanks to the South Australian motoring community following the widely publicised consultation process regarding proposed changes to the South Australian Historic Vehicle registration scheme. Mullighan claims to have received a petition of over 2300 signatures from the Street Machine Association of South Australia, the organisation fundamental in pushing for the changes, in addition to “about 200 other responses”, including a formal response from this club, as published in the February edition of Classic Marque.

An extremely rare Jaguar XJR-15 is currently for sale in Australia. Offered by the Gosford Classic Car Museum, the car is one of just 53 produced and you'll need a cool A$1,050,000 to transfer it to your garage. Only four XJR-15s reside in the southern hemisphere, two each in Sydney and Melbourne, with this example, chassis 018, fully restored by Mike Roddy Motors in Moorabbin, Victoria. It's travelled a mere 710km with only a handful of those completed since the restoration. In concept the XJR-15 was a road-going version of the Le Mans-winning Jaguar XJR-9. It was the first road car to be built completely out of carbon fibre, though its competition focus meant it definitely put the racer in road-racer.

Stephen Mullighan MP (right) and SMASA member Glenn Stankevicius (left) celebrate changes to South Australia’s Historic Vehicle registration scheme, which will see modifications improving the safety and usability of classic vehicles permitted under Historic Vehicle registration requirements. “Last year I announced plans to improve conditional registration, including allowing modified cars on to the scheme and a 30-year rolling age for eligible vehicles.

Power came from a 6.0-litre V12 producing 336kW/570Nm. That might not seem much by today's standards, but the XJR15 weighed just 1050kg, of which almost a third was engine. Performance was vivid, with 0-60mph (0-97km/h) claimed to take just 3.9sec and a top speed of 307km/h. Unfortunately, raising the ride height to make it suitable for the road limited the effectiveness of the aerodynamics and led to very lively handling at the limit.

A one-make race series was devised to showcase the car, the THE BOTTOM LINE

“It’s great to see passionate car-loving South Australians so supportive of our proposal. “I should have a final recommendation soon which will enable the Government to implement the changes from July 1” Mullighan said in a Facebook post on the 23rd of February.

Cat burglars! Criminals steal £3 million of engines from Jaguar Land Rover's Solihull plant in film-style heist Jeanette Oldham Birmingham Mail Criminals have driven off with an estimated £3 million in engines from Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull plant in an astonishing film-style heist. A suspected stolen lorry was used to steal the huge haul of expensive car parts in just a few minutes on Tuesday night. It is understood the audacious heist took place in full view of security cameras. Police are now hunting the gang behind the theft which insiders say has left management and staff ‘stunned’. JLR is also offering a 'substantial reward'. A JLR spokesman said: "We can confirm that we are working closely with West Midlands Police to investigate the theft of engines from the Solihull manufacturing plant. A reward is on offer to anyone who has information which leads to the successful recovery of these engines. "It would be inappropriate for us to make any further comment whilst this investigation is ongoing." Insiders say the stolen 40 tonne lorry arrived at the Solihull Lode Lane depot at 10.30pm on Tuesday and entered through the securitymanned D1 gate. The HGV then drove to the Lagoons depot and hooked up to a trailer containing the car engines,

Above: The Jaguar Land Rover factory on Lode Lane, Solihull. before driving out. Sources claim the criminals obtained paperwork from the site before leaving - making their escape easier. Sources claim the first theft took just six minutes. The stolen lorry is believed to have unloaded in the Coventry area. Incredibly, the same lorry is believed to have returned to the factory a couple of hours later before hooking up another trailer and driving off with more car engines.

It is believed the engines were stolen from the Damson Lane site in Tile Hill sometime between late night Tuesday 31 January and the early hours of Wednesday 1 February. “An articulated truck is believed to have entered the site twice, each time hooking up to trailers carrying the engines and then leaving again through the gate. “The empty stolen trailers have since been located. “Any information on the whereabouts of the engines or those involved in the thefts should be

Design and Styling of the ‘S’-Type - Part 5 A continuation of our ongoing series on the design and styling of the Jaguar ‘S’-Type. After finishing the update of the new 2.4 -litre small saloon that resulted in the Mk2, Sir William Lyons (he had been knighted in 1956) wanted a new revolutionary sports car and an up-todate large saloon. Both the sports car line (XK120, XK140, XK150) and large saloon line (MkVII, MkVIII, MkIX) were out-of-date body on frame designs with styling behind the times. The powerful smooth XK 6-cylinder engine, Jaguar’s monocoque (unitary body) engineering experience, and the newly designed/engineered Independent Rear Suspension were to form the basis for both. For the new sports car, Malcolm Sayer’s aerodynamic ideas, developed on the D-type, set the general design. Sir William’s styling ensured it balanced beautifully and that shut lines and details were correct. The new IRS and the XK150’s triple carburetter 3.8 ‘S’ version of the XK engine finished off the revolutionary E-type.

The Zenith prototype car. The large saloon project was codenamed ‘Zenith’. It too would be based on the XK150’s triple carburetter 3.8 ‘S’ version of the XK engine and the new IRS. Lyons’ plan for the MkX was to

introduce advanced motoring concepts into the most sophisticated luxury saloon Jaguar ever built. He wanted a totally new look. Lyons had a lifelong interest in aircraft and Nick Hull speculates that he discussed “… the latest strike aircraft with (friends with The Motor and Flight magazines) over lunch one Sunday and using the occasion to feed his ideas for the ‘Zenith’ project.” One such contemporary jet fighter was the Blackburn Buccaneer with a “… shapely nose and tapering tail, together with hooded intakes for the twin engines. Likewise, the mid-section has a double beltline and heavily rounded forms that spill outwards in something of a porpoise-like shape.” Lyons worked on the exterior styling from the fall of 1958 to the summer of 1959. The shape was low and smooth with a long sweeping wing crown line from the front to the tapered tail. Lyons’ ideas were first built into a wooden mock-up by Fred Gardner’s secret bodyshop. Only two Zenith prototypes were built: black prototype “No. 1” was built in June 1960; a second prototype was built and also used to experiment with a “Lightweight Body”. A complete design/restyling of the back end structure was required to accept the stresses fed into it by the Jaguar IRS. The cross member carrying the IRS was mounted in the rear bodyshell to boxed chassis legs by two ‘V’- shaped rubber mountings. The MkX would also be the largest Jaguar 5½ in longer than the MkIX and 6 ft. 4 in. wide – wider than any other British saloon. Lyons tried combinations of tail clusters and rear bumpers to get the

Two alterative rear ends. Top; tail lamps on separate chrome plinths as on the XKs, with a slim-line bumper. Bottom; taillights in the extension of rear fenders with the “Armco” bumper. back the way he wanted it. The vertical rear light cluster gave a slight ‘finned’ look to the longer tapered boot contour while the Mk2 “Armco” rear bumper looked too heavy. The number plate was repositioned to the centre of the boot lid with a logoed plinth containing the number plate and reversing lights and a slim-line bumper that wrapped around the rear. The rear wheel openings were topped with a low flattened-oval wheel arch covering the top of the rear tyres. This was the first Jaguar saloon to not have some form of detachable rear spat, although Lyons did try a small form of removable spat on the mock-up. Lyons finalized styling the rear before settling on a front-end design. At the

THE BOTTOM LINE S-Types weren’t just luxurious saloon cars for the well-to-do; they were also incredibly quick in their day, which made them the perfect candidate for criminals wanting to make a quick getaway. Two headlight designs tested on the Zenith prototype. front Lyons used the classical Jaguar vertical –finned radiator grille but sloped it forward in an aggressive squared-off shape rather than the traditional Jaguar rounded ‘cat’s paws’ form of the XKs and the Mk1/Mk2. The grille was flanked by twin pairs of hooded headlamps (Note: he tried at least three headlamp designs, including vertical as used by Mercedes Benz and Facel Vega and horizontal in an oval surround as Cadillac and Rolls Royce) before settling on evenly spaced hooded headlamps with the inner being smaller. Round air intake grilles, new ‘frenched’ sidelamps, turn indicator lamps wrapping around the corner of the front wings and a slim-line bumper finished the newly styled front end. On the sides the familiar chrome-plated side-window frames were used with the front wheels topped with small flattened-oval wheel arches higher than in the rear.

small trim pieces. Lyons was involved at a detail level deciding such things as whether the upper dashboard top should be walnut or foam padded and whether to use interior door handles from Mk2 stock or Mercedes-style flush ones. The one-piece body/chassis design was based on that introduced in the 2.4-litre and further developed for the Mk2 but, while larger, was stiffer to eliminate the squeaks and rattles that plagued the 2.4-litre and Mk2. Two massive longitudinal box-sections ran beneath the floor joined by a strong scuttle assembly with transverse boxes to stiffen the front and rear floor pans. Two boxed chassis legs ran rearward to support the IRS. This formed a strong monocoque chassis-assembly relieving the upper bodyshell of load carrying. The upper and lower body skin panels were attached and joined by welding together out-turned flanges hidden behind the bumpers as developed on the E-type. When it was launched on October 12, 1961, the big MkX saloon was a cutting edge technical design but its appearance received mixed reviews. Although ‘announced’ in October, delivery of bodyshells and “teething problems” delayed deliveries of cars until the winter of 1961-62.

Rigid MkX body and chassis. For the interior, Lyons re-designed the seats for more comfort. The general dashboard layout was retained with an increased use of walnut veneer for the heater control panel and for the Mk2s leather covered centre dash panel. New ABS vacuum-forming was used for

The Ed.’s Inbox The Mechanic The three-position Lucas headlight switch in a Mk 2 -- DIM, DIMMER, and OFF.

A Jaguar mechanic was removing the cylinder head from the engine of an E-Type when he spotted a well-known cardiac surgeon in the garage.

The alternative three switch settings -- SMOKE, SMOLDER and IGNITE.

The cardiac surgeon was there waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his car when the mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?" The surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked; "So Doc, look at this engine. I opened its heart, took the valves out, repaired or replaced anything damaged, and then put everything back in, and when I finished, it worked just like new. So how is it that I make £30,000 a year and you make £600,000, when you and I are doing basically the same work?"

THE BOTTOM LINE The cardiac surgeon paused, leaned over and whispered to the mechanic: "Try doing it with the engine running."

Actor Clint Eastwood, a well-documented lover of Jaguars, takes a look under the bonnet of his 1958 XK 120, summer 1960.
