Your Editor enjoyed some time away on the Yorke Peninsula, returning to Adelaide with a combined chocolate and red wine hangover… what’s Easter if you don’t indulge a little, hey? This coming month is going to be absolutely huge for the club—in amongst the usual smattering of Autumn car shows and runs, you may have heard something about the JDSCSA coordinating the 2018 National Rally… and what a program it is! On a global front, Jaguar has entered an exciting deal with tech giant Waymo to further the development of driverless car technology featuring the soon-tobe-released I-PACE electric SUV. Exciting times ahead, on a local, national, and international level! I look forward to seeing many of you at the 2018 National Rally!

Log Book Renewals DUE 1 JULY 2018. There have been significant changes to Conditional Registration in the last 12 months. The new Code of Practice called ‘Club Registration’ became effective 1 July 2017. Full details are available on the JDCSA website under ‘Historic Registration’. Briefly, the new code removed the need for annual Statutory Declarations and three-yearly vehicle inspections, and your car now becomes eligible for Conditional registration if 30 years or more have elapsed since 1 January of the year in which the vehicle was manufactured (i.e. currently 1988). Along with this, a relaxation on modifications has occurred, making it the decision of each Club to determine what is and is not acceptable. The Jaguar Drivers Club of SA allows any modification (remembering it is the owner’s responsibility to ensure compliance with road rules and roadworthiness), and as well as Jaguars and Daimlers, accepts any make of vehicle (examples include Ferrari, Holden, Morris etc.) There is also a new look Log Book which will be issued for new/replacement books. A Vehicle Inspection (by JDCSA nominated Club Inspector) is still required for a first time Club Registered vehicle, and the Inspection form (MR334) will be made available to submit to Transport SA so that you can obtain Club Registration. Once registered, your Log Book can then be issued (note that you cannot drive the vehicle until you have a current Log Book). No further inspections are required while the log remains current and the vehicle remains with the same owner. Once issued, the information on the Conditional Registration Form is sufficient for the Log Book Secretary to issue a Log Book; however, we must also record the vehicle Model (e.g. XJ6, Mk2 etc.) which is not on the Registration Form. We are also required to notify the Motor Registrar if a Log Book owner fails to renew Club Membership (Note: your Membership or Log Book is not renewed on time and you drive your vehicle you are both unregistered and uninsured). All Log Books expire annually with the Club Membership Year (30 June), and until you renew your JDCSA Membership (renewal forms will be mailed to you in May/June) you cannot have your Log Book renewed, or a new Log Book issued. As per last year we will be offering to issue/renew Log Books at our June and July General Meetings, provided you have renewed your Membership for 2018/19. If you miss the Meeting, once you have renewed your Membership, simply mail your current Log book with your current registration papers (and a note identifying the Model of vehicle) to me via the Club mailbox. Jaguar F-PACE SVR Debuts Quickest and fastest Jaguar SUV packs a blown V8 punch; arrives here this year. Marton Pettendy Motoring.com.au Jaguar has revealed a “‘bahn”storming new V8 flagship version of its inaugural SUV, the F-PACE, and it’s the quickest and fastest production SUV ever seen from the leaping cat brand – or its Land Rover sister brand. Revealed ahead of its world debut at the New York motor show tomorrow, the MY19 Jaguar F-PACE SVR is powered by JLR’s 405kW/680Nm supercharged 5.0litre V8, making it the only V8-powered FPACE. The result is claimed 0-100km/h acceleration in just 4.3 seconds (0.2sec sooner than the similarly powered, circa$240,000 Range Rover Sport SVR) and a top speed of 283km/h – 3km/h faster than the newly upgraded Rangie SVR. Naturally, the SVR treatment also brings an enhanced chassis and aerodynamics to the fastest and most powerful F-PACE yet – the latter including an SVR-specific vented bonnet, unique front and rear bumpers with larger openings to aid cooling, plus unique wheel-arch extensions, lower body mouldings and a rear lip spoiler to aid high-speed stability. The SVR-tuned chassis features uprated dampers, anti-roll bars and progressive springs that are 30 and 10 per cent stiffer respectively. Jaguar claims the set-up reduced body roll by five per cent. Lightweight 21-inch and optional 22-inch forged wheels with staggered-width tyres are also fitted, the latter being 2.4kg lighter at the front and 1.7kg lighter at the rear.

Also improving handling and traction is an electronic active rear differential (EAD – a first for the F-PACE), while braking is left to uprated two-piece 395/396mm front/rear discs and an active variablevalve exhaust with quad outlets aids performance by reducing back pressure, is 6.6kg lighter and delivers a V8 SVR soundtrack. Inside, there are slimline front and rear sports seats with signature lozenge quilting and embossed SVR logo, a Sports Shift Selector to replace the rotary selector and an SVR steering wheel with aluminium paddle shifters. Of course, SVR has also tweaked the Jaguar F-PACE SVR’s Quickshift automatic transmission, electric power steering, torque vectoring, all-wheel drive, traction/stability control and Adaptive Dynamics.

The Jaguar F-PACE SVR will be available to order in the UK from June, priced from £74,835 ($A138,000). Australian pricing will be announced in two weeks, ahead of first local deliveries in the fourth quarter of this year. Expect a price tag of around $150K, in line with the Mercedes-Benz GLC 63 S ($164,900 plus ORCs) and other upcoming competitors like the Alfa Romeo Stelvio QV, Audi RS Q5 and BMW X3 M.

Jaguar to supply 20,000 cars to Google's self-driving spin-off Waymo Deal shows Waymo’s ambition in developing driverless ride-hailing service Gwyn Topham The Guardian Jaguar Land Rover is to supply up to 20,000 of its new electric I-Pace cars to Waymo, a subsidiary of Google owner Alphabet to be converted into self-driving vehicles for its ride-hailing service. The tie-up, worth up to £1.3b (AUD $2.4B) and announced at the New York motor show, is a further mark of Waymo’s ambition in the race with Uber and others to develop a driverless ride-hailing service – as well as a huge boost for Britain’s biggest car manufacturer as it takes it first steps into electric vehicles. Jaguar will deliver vehicles for Waymo’s ridehailing service from 2020. Waymo says the 20,000 I-Pace models will provide up to one million rides a day. Although the I-Pace will be produced in Graz, Austria, JLR stressed that it is a British designed and engineered vehicle, from its research and development facility in the West Midlands. JLR, owned by Indian company Tata, did not put a price on the deal, but an I-Pace, launched less than a month ago, retails at about £63,000 (AUD $116,000) in the UK. The manufacturer said it would be “a longterm strategic partnership” to develop the world’s first premium self-driving electric vehicle. Testing of the Jaguar car, equipped with Waymo’s self-driving technology, will start in Arizona later this year. The expansion of the service comes despite fresh fears raised over the safety of selfdriving cars, after an autonomous Uber car killed a pedestrian in Arizona in March – the first such casualty. Uber’s testing of vehicles in Arizona has been suspended after the incident. The victim, a 49-year-old woman wheeling a bicycle, appeared not to be detected by the vehicle’s sensors. front seat when it struck the pedestrian. Nvidia, which supplies chips for Uber’s selfdriving cars, and Toyota have also suspended testing of autonomous vehicles on US public roads following the accident. The suspensions leave Waymo as the only company with a fleet of fully self-driving cars – and with no one in the front seat – on public roads in the US, and on course to launch the first robotic taxi service, where members can hail cars via Waymo’s app, by the end of the year. In the UK, JLR has been involved in a range of government-backed trials involving connected and autonomous vehicles, last week demonstrating how emergency braking warning systems could improve safety. Waymo has been building up a fleet of selfdriving vehicles in partnership with Fiat Chrysler since 2015. Last month it said it would buy thousands more of the Chrysler Pacifica minivans, on top of 600 it has already converted, to form the basis for a ride-hailing service that Waymo plans to launch in Arizona later this year.

JLR’s tie-up with Waymo is another in a series by car manufacturers with new technology firms, following Ford partnering with Lyft and Uber with Volvo. The auto industry is making substantial investments in autonomous, connected and electric cars, having been heavily committed to diesel and highly fuel-consuming vehicles. Ralf Speth, the JLR chief executive, said: “With the Jaguar I-Pace we have a worldbeating car that’s captured the imagination of customers around the world. Our passion for further advancing smart mobility needs expert long-term partners. “In joining forces with Waymo we are pioneering to push the boundaries of technology. Together we will deliver the selfdriving Waymo Jaguar I-Pace with the grace, space and eco-pace that customers expect.” John Krafcik, the chief executive of Waymo, said: “While we’ve been focused at Waymo on building the world’s most experienced driver, the team at Jaguar Land Rover has developed an all-new battery-electric platform that looks to set a new standard in safety, design and capability.”

Recently invited to test the E-pace, not impressed with it or the occasion – no coffee, cake or manual offered. Tony Human – XJ, ruined a tyre and rim recently on an unsealed bumpy dirt track. Quoted $1900 + GST + freight from the UK for a new wheel, but managed to source a second hand rim locally. The tyre had to be flown in from Melbourne. All good now. David Morgan – 2008 Sovereign X358, 145,000kms, recently bought in Queensland. Had the brakes done. Very happy with it. Ray Smithers – X-type, not driven lately. 1968 340 has had new tyres. Loved the E-Pace and the occasion – had coffee and cake, and was given a manual...... Peter Buck – X-type 2.1 V6, running well but will be selling after the Rally (offers invited). Wants a bigger more comfortable Jag.
Register Minutes Bob Charman – Took the Big Red 420G to Moonta, runs beautifully, very happy with it. S -type has had a new water pump, runs well. XJ had a damaged rear left hand door, being fixed by a panel-beater who is a family member. EType has transmission problems. Bob passed on a message of thanks to the Register from Don Tyrell who recently asked for help with his car which has been successfully repaired. ANY OTHER BUSINESS: Jim advised there are to be future airbag recalls for some models – these are listed on the Ezyreg website. Arcadia advised there will be a pull-out, double -sided page in the Rally manual listing all medical facilities available in Tanunda and Victor Harbor. Multivalve Register to take minutes and provide supper for the General Meeting at the Police Club on Tuesday 3rd April. COMBINED STATES BORDER RUN 2019: Bob K checked Albury Wodonga & Griffith and identified several motels having the required facilities but those locations would have entailed extra travelling for the Queensland contingent. Having discussed the matter with Qld. it was decided to now try the Parkes & Cowra area – in hand.

Bob to check Qld & Vic to select a date to clear School holidays in each state. Qld. Should be able to help identify a NSW contact to have that State included. 3. TECHNICAL & PARTS: 1. Ross Rasmus advised has removed the engine & gearbox from his 1 ½ L. The engine is currently with his mechanic to check the condition of the block. 2. Bruce Fletcher seeks help to identify a person to repair the radiator badge for his SS Airline. The main body is still with Marque Restorations. 3. Tony Veale is pleased with the new seat belt installation in his MkV & obtained some information re several electrical matters. 4. JDCSA (Malcolm Adamson): National Rally. The SS, Mk1V & MkV Register is to assist with parking at Carl Lindner’s Museum on the Friday morning April 13th. Bruce & Bob K will attend plus Malcolm if fit enough. The Register is not required to assist with parking on the Sunday 15th at Birdwood. 5. WELFARE: 1. Des Brown is to have a knee replacement mid April. 2. Malcolm Adamson has a mild lung infection but still proposes to attend most JDCSA events when possible. 6. GENERAL BUSINESS: 1. Des Brown has full Workshop Manual for Mk1V models for sale plus several other parts – contact Des direct. Des also tabled a damaged copy of the SS Register meeting minutes dated 28th November 1979. Moonta Show and Sh
The Township of Moonta put on another great day for all car enthusiasts on Sunday the 11 th March. With over 120 cars on display, on the main oval, plenty of good food, drinks, the town fair (Free train service to and from) and the sun shining. All this made for a very enjoyable day.
I was able to rent the Fire Brigade Holiday House for the week end and this made the trip even better. We were able to sleep 12 people comfortably.
We only had 6 cars from the XJ,Mk10,420G Register make the trip, but we had such a good time, good food and with plenty of laughs.
We made the most of the display day with the cars we had. We thought that our presentation, although not the biggest, but we believed we did the Jaguar Drivers Club proud. We thought we were a little unlucky in the best car club award. Anyway, we will try again next year.
You know, on these trips away, there is always someone who makes a fool of him or herself. You would not believe, on packing up on Monday morning we told everyone to make sure they don’t leave anything in their rooms!!!
Guess what, a pair of jeans and two T-shirt left in one of the bed rooms. I don’t want to give his name away, but, the fool owns Big Red... Make sure you come along next year. Bob Charman XJ Register Secretary
