Many of us go camping to get away from the daily grind, but you can still have other people around when you’re at your site. In case you don’t know, there are actually some unwritten rules of camping to be aware of and we cover them in this article. Finally, in a continuation of our look at different areas of health that we began last year, we will look at sleep apnea, a medical condition that impacts the lives of millions of Americans. Celebrating Mom on Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day, the official day for celebrating moms comes just once a year. This year it will be on Sunday, May 12. So it’s no big surprise that the time to start thinking about our moms and how we’re going to celebrate them is now. That way on “mom’s special day” we can celebrate them happily and show them our gratitude for everything they do.

There are many ways to celebrate Mom on Mother’s Day, but for many moms a simple call or visit would be fine – moms tend to be more about giving than receiving. But if you can, and want to do more than that, we have some ideas, but first, some statistical facts.

Mother’s Day Gifts

In 2023, the National Retail Federation said that consumers planned to spend a record $35.7 billion on Mother’s Day. That worked out to a record $274 per shopper. Back in 2019, per-shopper spending was $196 on Mother’s Day gifts – a record at that time.

The most popular gift categories for moms are greeting cards, flowers and special outings. Dinner is always a big Mother’s Day favorite, with jewelry and electronics also popular gifts. That’s all well and good, but there is plenty of evidence that says moms most want to just feel a connection to their kids on Mother’s Day. To help you achieve that in person, we looked around the area to find special outings and options for celebrating mom this year.

If you're heading outside to a park or to work out around your neighborhood, audio-based fitness apps are great options. These fitness apps are different from most streaming apps since you don't have to watch anything -- like a screen or TV -- to do them. Fitness trainers coach you through the workouts through your headphones.

The only downside to these is if you are a visual person and need specific moves demonstrated to learn them. That said most apps will describe the moves so you can hear exactly what to do.

Nike Run Club is a free app designed, obviously, for runners. If you are a runner, whether you're self-motivated or are looking for that extra push, this free app personalizes your running journey with coaches, community and guided recordings. Nike Run Club tracks your running progress and includes a space for sharing and meetups. Overall, Nike Run Club aims to inspire and encourage you to become the best version of yourself that you can be.

You might also look at Nike Training Club – also free. It is a fitness app with what is described as “a robust workout library.” That library includes one-off workouts, as well as programs led by certified instructors.

You can also check out Peloton Digital, although it does have a monthly fee. This app offers a range of workouts from cardio to runs with no equipment requirements and real-time metrics.

Regardless of which approach is best for you, outside workouts have health benefits and can be truly liberating. Ultimately, you may find an outdoor workout regimen that you truly love, but it all starts with that very first step.

Short Getaway: Lewisburg, PA

As we look ahead to summer and fall we are going to bring you a short series of articles on getaways you might consider taking over the next few months. We’re going to find easy drive trips that may have interest “along the way,” as well as the rewards to be found at your destination. So whether you’re looking to get out of town for the day, for the night or the entire weekend, we have some ideas.

We’re starting the series with Lewisburg, PA. If you don’t know Lewisburg, it is anywhere from about an hour-and-a-half to just under two hours from our general readership area heading west on Route 80. There are a lot of things to like about Lewisburg as a daytrip or weekend destination. Small Footprint, Historic Architecture

To start, Lewisburg has two characteristics that are front and center. The first is that the historic area – much more on that in a moment – is within a completely walkable area of just about one-milesquare. Within that area there is an amazing density of intact, historic structures.

In the case of Lewisburg there are hundreds of contributing historic buildings, structures, and sites. It doesn’t get much better than that for a summer daytrip getaway. Note that the town also has plenty of shopping and lots of restaurants.

Lewisburg History Lewisburg is considered to be one of the best preserved 19th century communities in the nation.

Between 1773 and 1910 a total of 646 buildings were constructed in Lewisburg. In the historic district today you can find architectural styles ranging from Federal and Queen Anne, to Italianate, Gothic, Colonial Revival and quite a few more.

Over the centuries, Lewisburg has been a center of commerce in Union County, situated on the West Branch Susquehanna River. The West Branch was used for logging and shipping back in the day, and today the remains of old factories and other ancient stone structures exist along the

Within the Historic District, you will find 18thcentury log, stone, and brick buildings along Water Street and Front Street, which was the early commercial district of the town. The Lewisburg Historic District is also remarkable because of its neighborhoods. They each have their own character

Follow Standard Procedure

1. Clean your site: Don't leave a dirty site for the next campers. Most campgrounds will charge you for leaving garbage or other items behind. Take out what you bring in.

2. Put your fire out: Because you can endanger those around you, this is one of the most important camping rules, regardless of where you go. Be sure to put out your fire before bed, heading out for the day, or when leaving your site at the end of your stay. The general rule is to make sure the coals or ashes are cold.

3. Clean up after your pets: Whether you're at your campsite, walking through the campground or hiking on a nearby trail, always clean up after your pets. Also be sure your pet doesn't go to the bathroom on someone else's campsite.

4. Don't wash your dishes in the bathroom: Not only

5. Don't cut through campsites: Unless you know your neighbors, avoid cutting through anyone's campsite. People pay to be at the campground, making the site their personal space for their stay. Don't intrude just to shorten your walk to the bathrooms.

6. Respect quiet hours: Nearly every campground has quiet hours, usually from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. These are put in place for those who need to get a good night sleep or are camping with children. Voices carry at night, so be respectful of this time. Be mindful of your early morning routine as well, which can be just as disturbing.

7. Use lowlights: When driving through the campground or unloading your car in the dark, turn off your headlights and use your lowlights. For those around you, the bright lights can disturb sleep. Once you arrive at the campground, only use lanterns and flashlights.

8. Keep your pet on a leash: Campground rules for pets differ, but with food, little kids and animal allergies most people will agree they don't want your pet wandering around their campsite. Keep your pet on leash at the campsite, on trails and around the campground.

9. Leave extra wood: If you have no use for it at home, leave your extra firewood. This is one of the camping rules that benefit you and those who use your site next.

10. Put everything back: If you moved the picnic table or other items on the site, move them back. And, if you created holes or trenches fill those in,

Other risk factors include being overweight, having certain heart and lung conditions, a larger tongue or shorter jaw, a narrowed airway, drinking alcohol, using sedative drugs and smoking.

3 types of Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) blocks airflow to the lung, causing you to snore loudly and wake up multiple times gasping for air. OSA is the most common type of sleep apnea affecting 4-7% of the general population and 30-40% of people with

high blood pressure.

Central sleep apnea (CSA) causes problems with how the brain communicates with breathing muscles. CSA develops in 30-50% of people with heart failure.

Complex sleep apnea happens when people diagnosed with OSA develop CSA during treatment for OSA.

The symptoms of OSA and CSA can overlap, which can make it hard to determine the type of sleep apnea someone has. Common symptoms include:

• Chronic, loud snoring

• Abnormal breathing patterns

• Waking up with dry mouth

• Gasping for air while sleeping

• Excessive daytime sleepiness

• Difficulty staying asleep

• Morning headaches

If you think you have sleep apnea, you should talk to your healthcare provider. They may do an overnight sleep test to confirm a sleep apnea diagnosis.

• Type 2 diabetes

• Chronic fatigue

• Liver problems

Central sleep apnea isn’t known to increase blood pressure.

Treating the Conditions

A night of restful sleep and healthier blood pressure are possible with the right treatment and some lifestyle changes. Your healthcare provider may recommend lifestyle changes like losing weight, being more active or quitting smoking. They may also suggest wearing a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine to improve your breathing during sleep. If you have high blood pressure, your healthcare provider may prescribe blood pressure medications that – when taken as directed – can help lower your blood pressure.

American Legion Post #16 News

Lehigh County’s oldest American Legion Post #16 presented shirts for the Northern Lehigh High School Patriot Club. The designed logo was created by the club, which helps the Legion Post placing flags on the outlying Veteran graves.

The club also lends assistance to the Post in conducting the Children’s Christmas Party at the Post. Since our Veterans are aging the Post is grateful for the help in furnishing these honorable services. Post Historian and Assistant Adjutant, Ron Scheffler, meets with the Club at the High School.

Post 16 Preparing for Memorial Day Services

The American Legion Allen O. Delke Post 16 in Slatington has started planning this year’s Memorial Day activities and schedule according to Post commander Ron Humanick.

Dennis Ziegler, president of the Veterans Day and Memorial Day Committees of the Allen O. Delke Post 16, The American Legion, held a meeting recently, the following officers were elected. Dennis Ziegler, President; George Burke, Vice President.

Items discussed at the meeting included replacing flags on veteran’s graves, Memorial Day weekend services, Memorial Day services and participants and speakers for Memorial Day which is on May 27 this year at Fairview Cemetery in Slatington.

Flags for the veteran’s graves will be replaced on May 5, 2024. Volunteers will leave the American Legion Post at 9:00 a.m. to replace flags on the following cemeteries: Williamstown, Jacksonville, New Tripoli U.C.C., Heidelberg U.C.C., Neff’s Lutheran, 7th St. Catholic, Fairview, Friedens, Presbyterian, Washington St. Catholic, Slatedale, and Union cemeteries. Rain date is May 12. Anyone wishing to help please meet at the American Legion Post by 8:30 a.m. All are welcome to honor our deceased veterans.

Approximately 2600 flags are scheduled to be replaced. Each veteran from the Revolutionary War to the present day whose grave is in these cemeteries will have their grave checked, the metal grave marker checked, and flag replaced with a new one. The flags are provided by the county for Memorial Day. The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 16 from the Allen O. Delke Post have taken on the responsibility of purchasing flags for Veterans Day. Slatington History Preservation Committee Presents Another Trip Downtown

The public is cordially invited to attend a lecture entitled Another Trip Downtown hosted by the Slatington History Preservation Committee. The presentation will explore prominent buildings, businesses and people once located along the 200 block of Main Street in Slatington during the period between 1864-present. Some highlights include the Messinger’s Bike Shop, The Snake Pit, Hallman’s Service Station, and Kramer’s Shoe Store. The event will be held on Saturday June 1 beginning at 2:00 PM, at the Vigilant Fire Company, 110 S. Walnut Street, in Slatington. Business ads, maps, and photos will be shown along with the presentation. A questionand-answer session will follow the presentation. Refreshments will also be available. The event is free and open to the public. This presentation

follows last year’s look at the 100 block of Main Street and further explores other prominent locations in Slatington and hopes people of all ages will attend to learn about their town’s history. 13th Annual Keep Slatington Beautiful Cleanup Completed

The Slatington Parks and Recreation Commission recently sponsored the 13th Annual Keep Slatington Beautiful Cleanup in partnership with Keep PA Beautiful and held in conjunction with Earth Day. The cleanup was held Saturday April 20 with a group of 35 volunteers participating. The volunteers were able to clean the following areas in Slatington: The entire length of Slate Heritage Trail, Slatington Trailhead, a portion of D&L Trail, Slatington Memorial Park, The Fishpond, Victory Park, Walnut Street Playground, and West End Playground. Over 30 bags of trash and other miscellaneous items were collected.

The Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission would like to thank PennDOT, Slatington Borough, Slatington Volunteer Fire Department, Giant of Walnutport, Slatington Woman’s Club and Girl Scout Troop 6365 and Daisy Girl Scout Troop 672 both of Slatington, and all our volunteers for helping clean Slatington's parks, playgrounds, and trails!

Natural Beauty of Woods Marred by Vandals

For the past several years, members of the Lehigh Township Rails to Trails volunteer organization have worked to return the woods at Indian Trail Park to its natural state. Money for some of the work was acquired through various fundraisers. At one time the woods contained dirt bike jumps and a lot of debris. A truck load of trash was cleaned out and a looped path through the woods was created and covered with gravel. Community members and groups of company volunteers also helped with this work.

In an effort to deter the growth of invasive plants, native plant areas have been created. Birdhouses have been built and installed, and tree identification signs have been hung. People using the park have mentioned how much they enjoy strolling through the woods, and how appreciative they are of our efforts to make it a place to enjoy nature.

Unfortunately, some individuals have destroyed some of the work that has been done. Located by the bridge over the creek was an illustrated sign with information about the types of trout found in the water. The sign has been stolen. At one of the native plant areas a sign was broken off and a large enclosure was built around a bench designed for enjoying bird calls and blossoming plants. Some plantings have been trampled. Elsewhere, a tree planted by the trails group was deliberately broken off.

Indian Trail Park is the most popular of the township’s parks. Many parties take place there, teams play at the sports fields and fisherman use the creek. Although township authorities have been notified, prevention of further damage is everyone’s responsibility. We hope that these negative activities stop. Also, the return of the

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

The Lehigh Township Historical Society recently held its 20th Annual Finally Spring Basket Social on April 14th at the Blue Mountain Fish & Game Association club hall on Wood Drive in Lehigh Township. We heartily thank the Fish & Game members who hosted LTHS and helped us with setting up. The Society would like to thank everyone who came out an supported our fundraiser. We appreciate the roughly 20 members and supporters who donated items for the raffle as well as LTHS Business and Civic Sponsors

whose contributions were utilized. Finally, we are also so very grateful to the 67 businesses who donated baskets and gift cards and cash to make our fundraiser a huge success and best ever! Attendance was amazing with almost 170 people participating in the raffle, purchasing baked goods from our bake sale and keeping our hosts busy in their kitchen making food. We’ll be doing this all over again sometime in April 2025. See you next year!

LTHS Gravestone Preservation Workshop - LTHS is working out the details for a new Gravestone Preservation Workshop program. Our goal is to clean and preserve the gravestones in Lehigh Township’s old cemeteries. The first workshop will be held at the Berlinsville Cemetery along Poplar Drive about 0.2 mile off Lehigh Drive (Rt. 248) in Berlinsville, Lehigh Township. We plan to hold the first class on Saturday June 8th starting at 10 am and expected last about 2-3 hours. Since we cannot do the cleaning in the rain, an alternate rain date will be set.

A waiting list will be formed and additional classes will be scheduled to accommodate additional interest. More details to come as we gauge interest in this workshop. When details such as possible fees, what to bring and alternate dates are finalized, people on the list will be contacted and be required to complete a registration form and a survey that will help us with future plans.

Please be patient with us as this is just the

beginning, however we are looking forward to a great program that we can offer our community. It’s Open House visiting season again! In April we had six visitors at the Historical Centre Museum in Pennsville. On Sunday May 19th, you can visit both the museum as well as the St. Paul’s OneRoom Schoolhouse (built in 1865) in Indianland between 1 pm and 4 pm. Mark your calendars to take a walk back into the past and see items used in the past. The precious baby boy had just received his wings

One year, Two years, three years, Four... All the anguish and suffering

This Mother’s heart endured

She misses his laughter and all his love She wonders and hopes is he happy up above?

No Cub Scouts or Boy Scouts

No little league or friends

No storytelling, going to parks

No Birthday parties, why did this life have to end?

She’s feeling lonely, a deep hurt inside there is a gap

She can’t hug him, hold him, or let him sit on her lap

She can’t buy him toys nor any nice clothes

She remembers funny faces he’d make and his tiny turned up nose

Every night she would tuck him in and he would say his prayers

He thanked God above for his mother cause he would always be there

So now she struggles her stomach is taut

Her mind is racing with some hope in her thoughts

Mothers, if you have children call them together from school work, or play

Make time to love them and make lots of play dates

Hug ‘em squeeze em and kiss them each date

You’ll never know God’s calling, it just might be too late

So Mickey if you hear these words

You know that they are true

Slatington Library News

The library will hold a “Night of Recognition” on Tuesday, June 11th at 6:00pm. We will be honoring Rodney Mummey whose name will be placed on the Louise Hallman Memorial Plaque, and ten local businesses and organizations who will be recognized as our Business and Organization partners.

Our spring pre-school story hour was a big success and was enjoyed by everyone. We would like to thank Deb Barhight, Lynne Fedorcha and Hali Kuntz for running the program and for their forever young hearts.

The Donald D. Owens Reading Challenge of 2024 began on February 18th. It is open to readers of all ages. Read 10 books write down the titles and receive a raffle ticket. At the end of the challenge, four prizes of $25.00 will be given away. The more tickets you have the greater your chance of winning. The challenge will end on May 31st.

The Book Club is now reading “The Midnight

Library” by Matt Haig. They will meet in person or by Zoom at the library on Monday, May 6th at 1:00pm. Their next book will be “Black Cake”, by Charmaine Wilkerson. If you are interested in joining the book club, please contact the library. The Genealogy Club meets the second Saturday of each month. They will meet for the last time this season on May 11th at 11:00am. They take off for the summer and will resume meeting in the fall.

The library provides many services to the community. For a fee, we provide copies and faxes. A free library card gets you access to books, e-books, magazines, e-magazines and audio books from 12 libraries as well as links to 12 online databases. There are also public access computers from which you can print for a fee.

Library hours are Mon. & Wed. 9am to 7pm, Tues. 9am to 3pm, Fri. 9am to 5pm, Sat. 8am to 2:00pm. The library is closed Thursday and Sunday. Any questions concerning this information please contact Louise Bechtel at the Library at (610) 767-6461. Thank you.

In 1971, the new Tri-County State Bank opened at 512 Bank Street, Bowmanstown, PA, in Carbon County. Originally, it was called the Bowmanstown Bank and was established on July 2, 1934. The old bank was located across the street from the Bowmanstown Diner. The bank was later known as Tri-County Bank in 1983. Atty. Martin H. Philip was chairman of the board for eight years.

On Feb 1, 1984, the bank merged into and operated as part of the Merchants National Bank of Allentown. Sadly, in August 1997, the Bowmanstown bank closed forever.

Many of the people who helped identify the people in the photos were once employed at the bank. Lynn Shupp was the drive thru teller at the bank.

Steven Uhnak has fond memories of the bank when he was a kid in the 70s and 80s. His grandfather took care of the grounds and did minor maintenance during the day, and his dad would clean the bank at night.

Asking the Quiet Part Out Loud: Will A Vessel Safety Check Save

Each spring, recreational boaters debate getting a free, no-penalty vessel safety check (VSC). Some may also wonder if that VSC decal on their boat will save them from a random summertime boarding by law enforcement.

The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water, the boating safety arm of the nation’s largest membership-based boating group and Vessel Safety Check program sponsor says there is no data that supports having a current-year VSC decal lessens the chance for a random boating safety check. The U.S. Coast Guard flatly states the decal does not exempt boaters from law enforcement

“It’s a question some boaters don’t feel comfortable asking out loud,” says BoatUS Foundation boating safety director Ted Sensenbrenner, “Many boaters think that having a current VSC decal is some type of ‘get out of jail free’ card. It’s not.”

on so they can pass the next exam. In contrast, if your boat is boarded by the Coast Guard and deficiencies are found, you could receive a citation or fine.
