But first let’s remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Let us salute their courage as we honor the memories of the fallen this coming Memorial Day, May 27.

Now, on Memorial Day weekend and throughout the coming summer, as you run to the beach, run to a lake or run to the river, you must know how to keep yourself – and others if you have the responsibility of being a “water watcher” – safe. There was a local, tragic story here in our area about 12 years ago that cost a young boy and his grandmother their lives while swimming in the Lehigh River. I spoke with the young boy’s mom and dad a few weeks ago and there are things they want to share with you about the dangers of open water and how to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. Please read “Lessons from a Local Tragedy” for highlights from our conversation.

This issue’s “short getaway” will take us to a beach town on the Jersey Shore. See “Short Getaway: Point Pleasant Beach, NJ” for all the specs.

When we think of danger at the beach, we generally think of water dangers, but there is another serious danger as well. Be sure and read “Practice Sand Safety at the Beach” to learn more.

10 Summer Eye Protection Tips

Once summer arrives it can be tempting to go out and enjoy the great weather with no concerns: hit the beach, dust off that home improvement

project, maybe join a pickup basketball game. But take care. Summer activities pose a number of potential hazards to your vision.

Here are 10 precautions, recommended by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, to get the most out of the season while decreasing your risk: Choose sunglasses with full UV protection: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is much stronger in summer, and just because the lenses are dark doesn’t mean your eyes are protected. Look for glasses labeled either UV400 or 100 percent UV protection, which means that the lenses will block the full spectrum of UVA and UVB rays.

Pay attention to the lens style: Wraparound styles can provide better summer eye protection, since they cover your peripheral vision. And if you plan to be in situations where you could increase your risk for injury – such as taking a spike to the face during a game of beach volleyball – choose shatter-proof polycarbonate lenses.

Buy sunglasses from a reputable retailer: Some online sources will sell products that can be dangerous for your eyes. Do your research before buying.

Wear a hat at all times when outside: This includes cloudy days, because clouds don’t block all spectrums of UV light. Not only will this give your eyes some extra protection, it will also protect your scalp and face from sun damage.

Always wear swim goggles: Goggles are necessary for both indoor and outdoor pools. Even in chlorinated pool water some microorganisms may survive and cause an infection, and this infection risk only increases in lakes and other non-chlorinated water areas, such as hot tubs. Communal areas may be teeming with bacteria. Don’t swim in contact lenses: If you wear contact lenses, you’re more susceptible to infection, given that your eyes are more likely to get irritated. Choose the right eye protection for your sport: Depending on the sport, this might include goggles, a face guard or a helmet. The American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) has protection standards for every sport. In addition, by supplementing any official standard with the tips above (wearing a hat, full UV sunglasses, etc.), you can increase your summer eye protection even more.

Be careful when working around the house: From cutting the grass to woodworking and car projects, summertime means an increase in risk from hazardous chemicals or flying debris. For these activities, always wear glasses, goggles or a face shield that features “ANSI Z87.1” on the lens or frame. This designation means it has met the

Avoid indoor tanning: Tanning beds can produce far greater UV levels than the sun. If you do use a tanning bed, make sure to wear protective UV-blocking goggles, not sunglasses. Wash your hands frequently: This is important any time of the year to help prevent the spread of eye infections. In the summer, when people are more active outside it’s even easier for infections to spread, including pink eye. So make sure to wash your hands regularly, especially before you touch your eyes or put in your contacts.

Short Getaway: Point Pleasant Beach, NJ

Whether you live in Whitehall, Palmerton, Bath or anywhere else in our readership area, you are under two-and-a-half hours from Point Pleasant Beach on the Jersey Shore – our “Short Getaway…” focus in this issue. One of the great things about Point Pleasant Beach is that you also have the town of Point Pleasant – a charming Jersey Shore beach town – right next door.

As you probably know, there are a good number of beach destinations to be found along the Jersey Shore, but if you’re looking for a beach destination

that is quieter and more family friendly, Point Pleasant Beach could be your ticket. The town and beach are located at the northern end of the Shore. As a matter of fact, Point Pleasant Beach is actually the Shore’s northernmost coastal community directly facing the Atlantic Ocean.

Routing and Accommodations

Another advantage of it being at the northernmost end of the Shore is that you won’t have to fight your way through an endless amount of beachbound summer traffic as you would traveling further south. There seem to be at least two good routes for getting there from our readership area.

A trip to the Point Pleasant Beach / Point Pleasant area is very doable as a daytrip. It could also work to plan it as a one- or two-night beach weekend. A quick search on Expedia or another travel site for Point Pleasant Beach will indicate there are many accommodation options at the Beach, as well as in the town of Point Pleasant and within another 2-3 miles.

The Atmosphere of the Place

The atmosphere is mainly “beach town on the Jersey Shore.” That said the town of Point Pleasant has a sizable residential community, so overall the area has a quieter, more stable community feel than other beach destinations. You can find plenty of beach craziness at the Shore, but you’ll need to go further south to get into the thick of it.

According to information on Wikipedia, this is the difference between the beach and the town: Point Pleasant Beach is home to the beach, the Boardwalk and an old fashioned downtown that dates back to the 19th Century, while Point Pleasant Borough is more of a bedroom community with sizable neighborhoods and a strong fishing industry.

The Point Pleasant Beach community is considered to be a vibrant, year-round town with thriving restaurants, clean beaches and an incredibly family-friendly atmosphere. In the summer months, the beach is generally packed – as are most along the Shore – so the advice is to get there very early if you want a spot near the water.

Public and Private Beach Access

According to info. from pointpleasantbeach.com,

Point Pleasant Beach has both public access and private beaches. You will find the public access beach at the southern end of town, and depending on local conditions, you might see surfers in the water.

Be sure to note there is an age-based beach access fee at Point Pleasant Beach, and lifeguards are present from 9-5 each day. The fees at Point Pleasant Beach are reportedly smaller than fees at other beaches on the Shore.

Lessons from a Local Tragedy

About 12 years ago a young boy and his grandmother went to the river to collect rocks. The young boy went into the river to swim, but couldn’t stand up to the water’s power and rapids. His grandmother went in to save him – she was reportedly a very good swimmer – but she was also pulled under and through the rapids and swept away. This is a local story and it’s a tragedy. But there are learnings to share. The little boy’s name was Nolan Ritchie.

Life-Shattering Grief

Out of their “life-shattering grief” Nolan’s mom and dad eventually came together with family and close friends in the community and created the Nolan Ritchie Staying Afloat Foundation. Their foundation is a nonprofit organization honoring the life of their child by bringing education and awareness of open water safety to the community, as well as providing life-saving vests to children in need of one. Nolan’s mom and dad, Tiffany and Robert, graciously agreed to speak with me recently. In our conversation they shared critically important information that we should all pay close attention to before going in or near the water alone or with loved ones – especially children. Here are some of the things we discussed:

• “Life Jackets.” Those words were said multiple times during our conversation. Nolan’s parents could not stress enough the importance of wearing a life jacket, calling it the #1 thing to do whenever you go into, or get near open water like a river or ocean. “To go without one is the most foolish thing you can do.”

• “All accidental drownings can be prevented.” According to National Drowning Awareness Day, more than 236,000 people drown each year. According to redcross.org, drowning is actually the 2nd leading cause of unintended deaths for children 1-14 after motor vehicle crashes – and it is 100% preventable.

• “It can all happen so quickly.” According to Nolan’s mom, “If you are a parent or anyone else responsible for being a ‘water watcher,’ put down your phone! Keep your eyes where they need to be – it can

It’s not like a swimming pool. For an inexperienced swimmer – someone who is not a “proficient” swimmer, there can be a tragic ending.

The Foundation as Resource

The Nolan Ritchie Staying Afloat Foundation is a significant resource for water safety information. For instance, here is information pulled from just

two postings on the Foundation’s Facebook page:

The American Red Cross defines a *proficient swimmer* as one who can continuously swim 500 yards using breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle, and/or butterfly, and 5 minute float and tread. Only 56% of self-described swimmers meet the definition of water competent.

In another post, a reminder for “Water Watchers” when a child in the water is not a proficient swimmer: Provide “touch supervision” – in other words, be close enough to the child to reach the child at all times and pull them from the water.

When in the water, be safe. Wear a life vest.

Coleman to Host Senior Expo May

LTHS Open House season offers 2 for 1. Starting on Sunday, May 19th, we have both the Historical Centre Museum (in Pennsville) and the St. Paul’s One-Room Schoolhouse (in Indianland) open to visitors from 1 to 4 pm. The 2 for 1 visitation repeats on June 16th from 1 to 4. During the hot months of July and August only the Museum will be open (it’s air conditioned)!

The LTHS annual BBQ to GO Take-Out Dinners will be held on Saturday, June 15th 12-3 pm this year (Not Sunday). You can pick up an order form when you visit the museum or schoolhouse on May 19th. LTHS Gravestone Preservation Workshop – We already have a number of people interested in attending our new Gravestone Preservation Workshop on Saturday, June 8th. There will be a limit of 10 to 12 per workshop. Additional dates will be set if we have a waiting list. Our goal is to clean and preserve the gravestones in Lehigh Township’s old cemeteries. The first workshop will be at the Berlinsville Cemetery along Poplar Drive about 0.2 mile off Lehigh Drive (Rt. 248) in Berlinsville, Lehigh Township. It will begin at 10 am and last 2-3 hours. cleaning in the rain, an alternate rain date TBD will be set. The workshop will be led by a trained instructor who has been cleaning and preserving gravestones for over 10 years. The initial sessions, for beginners, will focus primarily on cleaning and preserving gravestones.

There will be a nominal fee of $15 per participant to cover the cost of cleaning supplies. The workshops will be open to adults and teens age 14 and older. Children ages 10-14 must be accompanied by an adult who will work with them. Couples can also work together. The workshop fee for pairs of two will be $15.

Saturday 12-3 pm June 15th

You may not know this, but digging holes in the sand can be extremely dangerous – especially for kids. Here is a cautionary tale for every parent with children as we head into our peak summer recreational season, which for many families will mean going to the beach.

It’s only been about three months since a 7-yearold girl was killed on a Florida beach when the sand-hole she and her brother were playing in collapsed onto them. According to news reports,

the Indiana children and their parents were visiting Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, a small beachfront community near Fort Lauderdale.

The children had been digging a hole in the sand when the 4-to-5-foot-deep hole collapsed on them, burying the boy up to his chest and completely covering his sister. A group of about 20 adults attempted to dig the girl out using their hands and plastic pails, but the hole continued to collapse in while they worked.

An Overlooked Coastal Danger

When we think of danger at the beach we most often think of the water dangers, but this tragedy underscores an often overlooked coastal danger where children are especially vulnerable. In this case, when the sand-hole collapsed, the beach at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea was not staffed with lifeguards, and emergency personnel were unable to reach the girl in time.

Digging a hole in the sand is a common pastime for many people at the beach. But according to South Florida's Sun Sentinel, "Deaths by sand-hole collapse are more common than people think,

outnumbering shark attacks." Sand-hole collapses claim at least a few lives each year. It’s not a big number, but if your child is included in that number, it’s a big number.

The problem with sand-hole safety, the newspaper explained at the time, is that “wet sand collapses as it dries out, so if the hole is several feet deep, it can quickly bury someone inside.” When that happens, the sand pins down arms and legs and makes it difficult for lungs to expand. In the worst cases, it covers noses and mouths.

It’s important to know that sand is heavy and dense when gathered in large quantities, permitting no air pockets and making rescue difficult. Though deaths and injuries from caved-in holes at beaches are rare, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that most victims are under the age of 21.

Lifeguard Facts

To minimize the risk, lifeguards in many coastal locations will prevent beachgoers from digging any deeper than the waist or knee height of the shortest person in the group. Unfortunately, there weren't any lifeguards to stop the digging that led to the death in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.

Dear Parents, if you can find a beach with a

lifeguard on duty, it's always safest to take your family to one of those. But whether or not there's a lifeguard to keep an eye on things, the National Park Service advises that you stop anyone in your party from digging a hole in the sand that goes deeper than the knees of the shortest person standing inside.

Make Your Vision Last a Lifetime

When it comes to our health, we often visit our doctor to make sure our bodies are healthy, but what about our eyes? Eyes are not always top of mind, but they are just as important. Courtesy of the Glaucoma Research Foundation and the National Eye Institute, here are important tips for maintaining healthy vision that will last a lifetime.

Get a dilated eye exam. Getting a dilated eye exam is the only way to catch eye diseases early, because with many, there are no warning signs. Talk to your eye care professional about how often you should have one.

Live a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy foods including green leafy vegetables, maintaining a healthy weight, managing chronic conditions, and not smoking can significantly lower your risk of eye disease.

Know your family history. Talk to your family members about their eye health history. It’s important to know if anyone has been diagnosed

with an eye disease, since many (like glaucoma) are hereditary.

Use protective eyewear. Protect your eyes when doing chores around the house, playing sports, or on the job to prevent eye injuries. This includes wearing safety glasses, goggles, safety shields, and eye guards that are made of polycarbonate.

Wear sunglasses. Purchase sunglasses that block out 99 to 100% of both UVA and UVB radiation to keep your vision sharp and eyes healthy.

Taking these steps can help prevent vision loss, blindness, and many eye diseases from occurring.

Healthy Vision and Higher Risk Americans agree that eyesight has a huge impact on day-to-day living and is one of the senses they fear losing most. Unfortunately, people often do not pay attention to their eye health unless they notice a problem. However, many common eye diseases that can lead to vision loss and blindness, such as diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, or agerelated macular degeneration (AMD), often have no early warning signs or symptoms.

The risk of vision loss and blindness is higher for some people based on race, ethnicity, and other demographic and socioeconomic factors. You might be at higher risk for eye disease if you have a family history of eye disease; have diabetes; are

African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, or Alaska Native; or are older than 50.

• Glaucoma, which affects your side or peripheral vision first, is three times more common in African Americans than in Whites. It is a leading cause of blindness in African Americans.

• Diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of blindness caused by uncontrolled diabetes, occurs more often in Hispanics/Latinos than in Whites.

• American Indians and Alaska Natives are 35 percent more likely to have diabetes than the average adult in the United States, putting them at increased risk of diabetic eye disease.

• Older adults are at higher risk of developing age-related eye diseases and conditions such as AMD, glaucoma, or cataract. AMD is a leading cause of blindness in Whites.

If you are at higher risk of eye disease, having a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the best thing you can do to protect your vision. In addition to having regular eye exams, eating a healthy diet,

not smoking, and wearing protective eyewear are a few other things you can do to protect your sight. Help your vision last a lifetime.

The Genealogy Club is taking the summer off. Watch for their first meeting in September. The library provides many services to the community. For a fee, we provide copies and faxes. A free library card gets you access to books, e-books, magazines, e-magazines and audio books from 12 libraries as well as links to 12 online databases. There are also public access computers from which you can print for a fee.

Library hours are Mon. & Wed. 9am to 7pm, Tues. 9am to 3pm, Fri. 9am to 5pm, Sat. 8am to 2:00pm. The library is closed Thursday and Sunday.

Why Teen Exercise is Wise

Exercise benefits every part of your teen’s body, including their mind. It improves their brain health and learning, and can help them sleep better. When your teen exercises, their body makes certain chemicals that help them feel good and lower their chances of depression and anxiety. It can also give them a real sense of accomplishment.

Three parts of a balanced exercise routine include: aerobic exercise, strength training, and flexibility activities.

Balanced Exercise: Aerobic

Like other muscles, the heart enjoys a good workout. Aerobic exercise is any type of exercise

that gets the heart pumping and gets your teen breathing harder. This kind of workout done regularly makes the heart and lungs stronger so they are better at getting oxygen to all parts of the teen’s body.

If your teen plays team sports, they’re probably getting at least 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous activity on practice days. Some team sports that give a great aerobic workout are basketball, soccer, lacrosse, hockey, and rowing.

But if your teen doesn’t play team sports, don't worry – there are plenty of ways they can get aerobic exercise. These include biking, running, swimming, dancing, in-line skating, tennis, crosscountry skiing, hiking, and walking quickly.

Balanced Exercise: Strength Training

The heart isn't the only muscle to benefit from regular exercise. The other muscles in the body enjoy exercise too. When those muscles are used, they become stronger, and strong muscles are a plus because they support the body’s joints and help prevent injuries. Muscle-strengthening activities can also be bone-strengthening.

He has since been in a foster home with other dogs and children of all ages. He is housebroken. Trenton plays well with his foster dog siblings. Family Reunions

Soon again the season for Family Reunions will come into being. These are one of the events that are found only in our Pa German areas.

Do you realize that these family reunions have not been held for so very many years — the oldest found in my research were held about 88 years ago. It was about 1900 when people started gathering together. This was customarily at home with Grampa and Gramma, on the farm. In the beginning it was only children and grandchildren that attended.

When a few of these reunions were held, maybe in the orchard, or down in the woods near the spring, uncles and aunts arrived as well as cousins and other members of the extended family.

Later the group became too large to gather on the farm, then the reunion was held in the picnic woods.

From relatives it extended into acquaintances. and soon the Family Reunions were among the largest gatherings of the entire summer. In all Pa German areas every family was affiliated with at least one.

For the first Reunions everyone brought a lunch basket to place on the table that Grampa had erected out in the orchard or in the barn on the main thrashing floor.

Then later business stuck its nose into Reunions and programs were born .

Speakers, most of the time they were ministers who were asked to come, with musicians and singers. Then officers were required to keep things

going. That, naturally, meant that money was required to pay expenses.

Money had to be raised and the custom was to hold a collection, or sell tickets and pins — and shortages were normally made up from the pockets of the officers and committee members.

Through these Reunions many families created Family Histories, searched through them for their family tree and made written record of it .

It’s a pity that the costs currently are so high for Family History books. In the past it was possible to print books for very little money, but that is no longer the way it is, the cost is so high that few could afford to buy them if they were available.

However, even if fewer Family Histories are created today, it is still a pleasure to see how families get together during the summers to continue the custom their great grandparents initiated about 89 years ago, on the old farm.

Many people today have an interest in their family background or family tree, while others do not bother with it at all. But, my dear readers, "it is just the way one looks at it."

We welcome anyone who has an interest in old cars to join us on any of our car tours. Our business meetings are not held again until September. You do not need to own an antique car to join our club or to go on tours.

Our annual Church Tour is on Father’s Day, June 16, 2024. We will attend church services at St. John’s UCC in Fogelsville followed by lunch and tour of the area.

On July 21, 2024, our club will travel as a group to Holcombe-Jimison Farmstead Museum in Lambertville, NJ. Our biggest event, Das Awkscht Fescht, (The August Festival) will be held at the Macungie Memorial Park August 2, 3, 4, 2024. This family event includes car show, swap meet, cars for sale, arts & crafts, live bands, children’s games, petting zoo. Learn more at awkscht.com. THE LEON HALL FAMILY

The Leon Hall family has deep roots in Lehigh Township when their ancestors settled here in the late 1700’s. This photo of Leon and his wife Ruth, along with son Douglas and daughter Ruth, was taken around 1960. Leon was born in 1913 and was the 5th generation of his Hall family line in Lehigh Township. Leon graduated from Lehigh Township High School in 1928 and Slatington High School in 1929. He worked at the New Jersey Zinc Company for over 30 years and later retired in 1978 from Air Products & Chemicals. He was active in the Lehigh Township Lions Club for many years. Ruth was born in 1916 and grew up in Slatington. They married in 1937 and lived with his family in Berlinsville. Ruth was a hairdresser and opened Ruth Hall’s Beauty Shoppe in 1946. She remained in business until retiring around 1980. The house on Lehigh Drive in Berlinsville was lived in by the Hall Family for 90 years until 1994.

Their children Douglas and Ruth have also lived in Lehigh Township for most of their lives. Doug graduated from Northampton High School in 1959 and Ruth in 1969. They are both married and have 2 children each and several grandchildren. Both are retired and still active in the community. Doug is in the Lions Club and Ruth is President of the Lehigh Township Historical Society. Their family’s longevity in the township shows that it was and is still a great place to live!

Missing hiker found dead In Lehigh Township

By HOME NEWS STAFF

Crews searched for a missing hiker in the early morning hours Sunday, May 5 on the Appalachian Trail. The hiker was found deceased in a wooded area near the Appalachian Trail in Lehigh Township, near the Carbon County line.

The Northampton County Coroner’s Office on Monday released the identity of the hiker as 61-year-old Raghu Kodali of Whitehouse Station, N.J. The coroner’s office is investigating the cause and manner of death.
