CAMPBELL FIGHTING CAMELS VOLLEYBALL 2013 SEASON OUTLOOK Season Overview

The Concord, N.C., native accomplished a rare feat posting a triple-double – 13 kills, 24 assists and 13 digs – in a five-set loss to Western Carolina on Sept. 11, 2012. Cindy Oppenhiemer holds the two previous occurrences for the Camels with the last occurring on Nov. 11, 1998.

Entering the 2013 campaign, Campbell is under the guidance of Greg Goral, who was named the 12th head coach of the Camels on Dec. 10, 2012. He has instilled a foundation of discipline and hard work into the program since his arrival.

Ramirez, from Long Beach, Calif., focused on playing for Seal Beach Volleyball Club and TCA Volleyball Club. She participated in just her senior season at Saint Joseph High School and was named to the 2012 Del Rey All-League First Team after tallying 596 assists, 36 service aces, 120 digs and 21 kills.

“These players are beginning to understand what it takes to play at a high level and become champions,” said Goral. “The rewards are what drives the student-athletes and coaching staff to continue working hard.” Seven returners are back for the Camels including a trio of upperclassmen that are poised to lead the team into a new era in seniors middle blocker Lindsey Coats (Dunn, N.C.) and setter Heather Wilson (Concord, N.C.) and redshirt junior outside Jessica Groen (Las Cruces, N.M.). A pair of sophomore transfers in outside Alexis Hein from ArkansasLittle Rock and defensive specialist Mary Crema (Loveland, Ohio) from Cincinnati are going to be key contributors, while freshmen setter Rebecca Ramirez (Long Beach, Calif.) and middle blocker Jenny Tait (Ormiston, Australia) provide added depth. Coach Goral has taken a teaching mentality, stressing on the technical aspects of the game, in preparing his squad over the spring and during the preseason practice sessions.

2014

“The end result is that our players will become smarter players that are in better positions to make plays and take smarter swings,” said coach Goral. “We can reduce the number of unforced and mental errors, leading to more opportunities to score.” The team has learned the value of executing offensively and having a more complete understanding of the game. “If we can execute more often, then we are going to score more points, which will ultimately lead to more victories,” said coach Goral. “We must have the right mentality defensively. To go out and be aggressive, be a team that doesn’t give up and fights for every point. Creating a sense of unity between each of the 11 members of the squad has been a goal for coach Goral. The ability to communicate at a higher level, understand one another and to work together has been encouraged in off-court team activities like a scavenger hunt, Frisbee golf, bowling and a training session at the beach. “As the season moves forward, the consistency level of our team offense and defense will progress as the players become comfortable with one another,” said coach Goral. “There will be less mistakes and an increase in all-around communication and execution.” Joining Goral in the spring was assistant coach Ashley Weers, one of the most prolific offensive players in Campbell history. It is her second stint on the coaching staff at Campbell after spending two seasons as a graduate assistant following her playing career (2005-09).

6

“Rebecca is very good out of system,” said coach Goral. “She can be running in any direction and throw up one of the most hittable balls that I have ever seen. She makes the hitters better by where she places sets.” The different traits that each setter possesses enable coach Goral to change the tempo and develop a unique offense that allows the team to compete at a high level.

Heather Wilson

Middle Blockers

“From an organizational and managerial standpoint, Ashley knows the ins and outs of Campbell,” said coach Goral. “She provides really good insight for our recruits because of her prospective of being a student-athlete here and the changes that have been made in the program.”

The experience of the middles is one of the strengths for the Camels with the athleticism of senior Lindsey Coats (Dunn, N.C. ) and junior Lorin Thomas (Raleigh, N.C.). Freshman Jenny Tait (Ormiston, Australia) at 6-2 is the tallest player on the team and has a bright future for the Camels.

The coaching staff is rounded out by Alicia Roth, who was a four-year defensive specialist at Samford. She brings coaching experience at the club level and is an asset in helping to develop the back row players.

“Lindsey and Lorin provide a tremendous presence in the middle for us,” said coach Goral. “They are players that we want to use as primary attackers. Both are shut-down blockers that do a fantastic job of being on time and reading hitters.”

“Alicia helped Samford’s program go through a transition process, where a new coach came in and built a championship team in three years,” said coach Goral. “She can relate to the players from the perspective of implementing a winning culture into our program.”

Coats paced the Camels offense last year with 225 kills converting at a .278 rate, while providing a big presence at the net by blocking 85 attacks. The Dunn, N.C., native has emerged into a leader on the squad and a role model for the younger players to look up to.

Setters Campbell has a duo of setters in senior Heather Wilson (Concord, N.C.) and freshman Rebecca Ramirez (Long Beach, Calif.) that together provide the Camels with a number of offensive options. Wilson has the experience and at 6-0, the ability to keep the defense honest by attacking in the front row, while Ramirez excels in running the offense in transition and has great court awareness. Wilson has accumulated 2,177 assists, fifth-most in program history, in three campaigns at Campbell after spending her first spring semester at Washington State. She additionally contributed 2.07 digs per set for the Camels. “The experience that Heather brings is important because of the chemistry she has built with the hitters,” said Goral. “She has been in the trenches, doesn’t get rattled and plays with a lot of poise and confidence.”

Lindsey Coats

CAMPBELL FIGHTING CAMELS VOLLEYBALL 2013 SEASON OUTLOOK Defensive Specialists

“Lindsey is our speedster,” said coach Goral. “She beats opponents with her speed and athleticism. The energy that she provides on the court motivates her teammates. She has matured into one of the hardest workers on the team.”

Lauren Bewick (Winterville, N.C.) and Crema are set to lead the Camels’ back row. Both players have already gained valuable experience entering their sophomore campaigns.

A journeyman that has trained at each position along the front row is Thomas. The Raleigh, N.C., native contributed 140 kills and 46 blocks as a sophomore for the Camels.

Appearing in 30 matches for the Camels last season was Bewick, who has improved her ability to read the opposing offense during the spring. The Winterville, N.C., native tallied 2.67 digs per set and added 12 service aces.

“Lorin has excelled rather quickly and blossomed as a middle during the spring,” said coach Goral. “She is very competitive and brings a strong physical presence to our front row.”

“Lauren did a tremendous job of training during the spring and is developing into a very good defensive presence,” said coach Goral. “She is moving quicker to the ball and a more experienced passer. We are going to rely on upon her defense and athleticism to dig up balls and make our opponents work even harder to score points.”

The first challenge for Tait in the preseason was acclimating to the 14 hour time difference from her home country, Australia. She has gained international experience after competing on the Australian youth national team and attending Queensland Academy of Sport. “Jenny brings a physical presence and ball control skills that will help our front row,” said coach Goral. “Being an international player, she has a better understanding of the game. This first year of college is going to be important for her to become quicker and gain strength through training.”

Outsides / Right Sides The Camels have four options on the outside and right side, which is led by Groen. A trio of sophomores in Katelyn Layden (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Alexis Hein (Murrieta, Calif.) and Kendall Tart (Dunn, N.C.) are set to provide experience and depth.

“Jessica is somebody that I have been very impressed with throughout my time here,” said coach Goral. “She has

been in the weight room all spring and summer, getting herself into great shape and that is showing in her ability to jump higher and attack with more power. She is an oncourt leader for our team and wants to help this program compete for championships.”

“Mary received strong training from a young age and her experience is going to help us,” said coach Goral. “She is also very competitive and has leadership skills that are important for the success of our program.”

Layden has emerged as an up and coming leader in the program through her ability to play any position on the floor. The Chapel Hill, N.C., native registered 91 kills and 164 digs during her rookie campaign. “Katelyn is a hybrid that can play either outside positions and is a strong defensive player,” said coach Goral. “She can do it all and contribute in a number of ways. She is attacking the ball at a higher point and making better decisions, which has paid off in her ability to terminate offensively.”

2014

Groen notched 201 kills during her sophomore campaign and has taken a leadership role on the court and in the weight room. The Las Cruces, N.M., native has transformed herself to play at a high level under the guidance coach Goral during the spring.

Katelyn Layden

Coming in as a transfer from Cincinnati, Crema has been an asset for the Camels in shoring up the back row and making it a strength of the team. The Loveland, Ohio, native appeared in 30 matches for the Bearcats, totaling 126 digs, 15 service aces and 12 assists.

The third returner on the outside is Tart, who is coming off a shoulder injury that forced her to redshirt last season. The injury enabled her to focus on her back-row play during the spring and transform herself into a reliable defender. “Kendall started a little slow in the preseason, but is now playing at a higher level,” said coach Goral. “She is mentally tough and working had to get back to 100 percent. She is a player that can play multiple roles for us after doing a great job of passing and playing defense in the spring.” An addition from Arkansas-Little Rock is Hein, who is coming off an injury that ended her 2012 season early. The Murrieta, Calif., native appeared in 88 sets as a freshman, posting 119 kills and 25 blocks. “Lexi is one of the athletes on our team,” said coach Goral. “She is a player that we are confident in her ability to play six rotations. The experience of sitting a season has helped her develop an understanding of the game and when to take over.”

CAMPBELL FIGHTING CAMELS VOLLEYBALL BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status.

2014

During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 15 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, has had four NFL Draft picks, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four out of the last seven years – including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run), Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. Last season, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team – one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won four PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007 and tied for runner-up at the 2011 Open Championship. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its 27 years of existence. Furthermore, the Big South has a record number of NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last two years.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997. The Conference’s 19th championship sport -- women’s lacrosse, will begin play in 2012-13 with seven members. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 11 member institutions comprise the 28-year League in 201112. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian College, plus the return of charter member Campbell University this year. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 700 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, more than 240 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship six times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles atlarge selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s
