SYNOPSIS The story takes place in a parallel 2011 year. The hero, a cosmonaut, was charged to repair an old satellite, and he just accomplished his mission. He enjoys his last minutes “outside”, around the Earth, when he suddenly sees a strange object : a perfect cube adrift. What is that thing ?! While it slowly moves away from the satellite, the cosmonaut takes his luck : maintained by a solid steel cable, he jumps in the void of space with the firm intention to get in contact with this unknow thing, whatever the cost... L’histoire prend place dans un 2011 alternatif. Le héros est un cosmonaute chargé d’effectuer des réparations sur un vieux satellite défectueux, et il vient de terminer sa mission. Il profite de ses dernières minutes en “extérieur” en orbite de la Terre, lorsqu’il aperçoit un objet insolite : un cube parfait à la dérive. Quel est cet objet ?! Tandis qu’il s’éloigne lentement du satellite, le cosmonaute tente le tout pour le tout : attaché à un solide câble d’acier, il se jette dans le vide avec la ferme intention d’entrer en contact avec cette chose inconnue, quel qu’en soit le prix...

QUICK ANALYSIS OF THE STORY ANALYSE RAPIDE DE L’HISTOIRE What’s the meaning of the adventure told in the short film ? i’d like everyone to make his own idea about it, without reading my explanations. Anyways, the next page may give a small clue if you really want one... Faut-il trouver un sens à l’histoire contée dans ce court-métrage ? j’aimerais que chacun se fasse sa propre idée de l’aventure, sans que j’intervienne dans la compréhension du scénario. Toutefois, la page suivante pourrait apporter des éléments de réponse à ceux qui y tiennent vraiment...
The key of comprehension resides in the cube itself, access key to the monolith. If it can remind you of Kubrick’s film, the role of this monolith is different. First, it’s still under construction, which proves it’s not the same as Kubrick’s. Here, it can be understood as a tower that each civilisation of the universe would have contributed to build, one day, in its own history. Indeed, this same tower is protected inside an extra-terrestrian structure, but the fact that no alien appears on screen indicates we’re not in a place to live, nor at an encounter point. So you have to consider the great circular room as an ark meant to preserve the monolith which is beeing slowly built through time – and has been for billions of years – and will continue to be built. In the short, humans were the last ones in date to participate, and others will come after to continue the work. This is although suggested at the very end of the video by the appearance of a whole new cube.
La clé centrale de la compréhension réside dans le cube lui-même, clé d’accès au monolithe. Ce dernier rappelle l’œuvre de Kubrick, mais son rôle est différent. Le fait qu’il soit en construction prouve bien qu’il ne s’agit pas du même monolithe. Ici, il peut être perçu comme un édifice que chaque peuple de l’univers aurait un jour, dans sa propre histoire, contribué à bâtir. En effet, cette tour noire est préservée dans une structure extra-terrestre, et le fait qu’aucune forme de vie ne soit visible à l’écran indique que ce n’est pas un lieu de vie, ni un point de rencontre. Il faut donc voir cette grande salle circulaire comme une arche destinée à préserver le monolithe qui se construit à travers le temps - et ce depuis des milliards d’années - et qui continuera à être bâti. Ainsi dans ce court-métrage, l’Homme serait le dernier en date à avoir participé à sa création, et d’autres à l’avenir viendront encore poursuivre cette œuvre. Ceci est d’ailleurs suggéré à la toute fin de la vidéo par l’apparition d’un nouveau cube à la dérive.
