Dear Readers,

We at Entrepreneur Middle East are honored to cooperate with the Women’s Empowerment (WE) Council and the WE Convention to bring forth the stories of women who had the courage, wisdom, and stamina to reach goals that, at one point of time, may have seemed unattainable. These pages thus serve as a cue for you to remember that, if they can do it, you can too. They are also a reminder that today, in contrast to past decades, women are much more educated and empowered to lead, and it is the duty of each and every one of us to all the more contribute to their surge forward.

This brings us to the people women surround themselves with, and how critical their circle of supporters is to their rise to greatness. And while we often hear about the need for women to support each other, it should not be forgotten that men can help promote the advancement of women too. Indeed, the benefits of such an approach have already been exemplified by the HeForShe initiative, the global solidarity movement for the advancement of gender equality launched by the United Nations.

This is something I have seen first hand with my male peers at Entrepreneur Middle East. Be it with their refusal to participate in all-male panels at events, or with them going above and beyond to accommodate flexible working policies for mothers, they are, I think, doing things right when it comes to what true male allyship for gender equity in the workplace should look like. In fact, these are practices that I wish every male boss, co-founder, colleague, or team member out there will emulate for their female counterparts.

For every woman attending the WE Convention 2024, I hope that it will translate into better lives for you and everyone around you, and I also hope that it will also help you build a tight-knit circle of supporters- both male and female. All the best!

“IN CONTRAST TO PAST DECADES, WOMEN ARE MUCH MORE EDUCATED AND EMPOWERED TO LEAD, AND IT IS THE DUTY OF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US ALL THE MORE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR SURGE FORWARD.”

H.H. SAYYIDA BASMA

AL SAID

FOUNDER, WHISPERS OF SERENITY

H.H. SAYYIDA BASMA AL

SAID a member of the Oman royal family, has made it her life’s work to raise awareness of mental health challenges and taboos across the GCC region, and educating people on the importance of having a healthy state of mind. This is why Al Said, who is a mental health clinical counselor, hypnotherapist, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)informed trainer, founded Whispers of Serenity, the first private mental health clinic in Oman. She is also the founder of Not Alone, a mental health awareness campaign that was known for providing psychological support during the COVID-19 pandemic through a messaging support line that was available worldwide.

TRANSPARENT DIALOGUE ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH NOT ONLY FOSTERS PERSONAL WELLBEING, BUT ALSO ENHANCES PROFESSIONAL EFFICACY, CREATING A MORE SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL.”

Al Said's wealth of experience in the field lends credibility to her observations about the state of mental health in the GCC, and her insights on how that pertains particularly to the region’s female executives and entrepreneurs are definitely worth noting. “Many feel compelled to push themselves to their limits before acknowledging any mental strain, fearing that any admission of struggle will be perceived as a sign of weakness,” Al Said says. "There's a common misconception conflating self-esteem with anger or an aggressive demeanor. Women often feel the need to overcompensate by acting tough or angry to assert their leadership or entrepreneurial capabilities, believing that this display of 'strength' is necessary to be taken seriously and to prevent being undermined.”

AS SUCH,

OUTWARD toughness or anger with self-esteem, Al Said advises women to work on building their inner confidence, as well as the ability to remain calm and composed. "I strongly believe that a calm demeanor is not only more appealing, but also more effective in leadership and entrepreneurship,” she says. "Women should be encouraged to let their work speak for itself, cultivating self-esteem that's reflected in their achievements, and how they conduct

themselves professionally.”

Furthermore, Al Said calls for redefining self-esteem as the ability to be assertive without being aggressive, to command respect without intimidation. Achieving this result, though, will require encouraging more women to speak about mental health difficulties. "Women must recognize their right to acknowledge when they're not okay,” she says. "In professional spheres, the reluctance to admit to feeling pressured often stems from a concern of being judged through the lens of gender stereotypes. The persistent question of how women balance work and home, seldom directed at men, reflects this bias. The narrative that household responsibilities are exclusively a woman's domain is outdated and needs to change.”

AL SAID THUS ADVISES WOMEN TO RECOGNIZE and articulate their struggles. "By addressing what they're experiencing as it happens, women can better manage their responsibilities and maintain their productivity,” she says. "Transparent dialogue about mental health not only fosters personal wellbeing, but also enhances professional efficacy, creating a more supportive environment for all.”

IN ADDITION, AL SAID BELIEVES THAT A TOP-DOWN APPROACH is crucial for addressing mental health effectively, and thus she encourages regional leaders to prioritize well-being as a core value. "Currently, there's a tendency at conferences and leadership forums to prioritize discussions about business empires and economic ventures, often at the expense of wellbeing topics,” she says. "This oversight is significant, because a foundation of good mental health is critical for the sustainability of any business or empire.” As such, for a successful mental health system on a national level, Al Said

} Enhance self-awareness "Take the time to reflect on your current state of mind. Are there noticeable changes in your mood, enthusiasm, or passion for your work and personal life? Recognizing these signs is the first step towards addressing them."

} Identify triggers "Keep a journal to note down moments when you feel stressed or unhappy. Understanding what triggers negative emotions can help you manage or avoid these situations.”

} Practice open communication "Before seeking professional help, it might be beneficial to speak to someone you trust- a friend or family member who listens well and can offer support. If speaking to friends or family is not enough, do not hesitate to seek help from a therapist, psychologist, or life coach. Choose a professional with a proven track record and experience relevant to your concerns."

suggests an integrated approach that includes government initiatives, followed by the private sector's involvement, and extending to educational institutions and healthcare facilities. "Mental health work is never done; it requires continuous effort and adaptation to address new challenges as they arise in our rapidly changing world,” she notes. “Leaders must remain vigilant and proactive in fostering environments that support mental health.”

WHEN IT COMES TO MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES IN THE MIDDLE EAST,

Al Said, who’s considered to be one of the pioneers of mental health awareness in Oman and across the GCC, believes that they

aren’t unique to the region. "I've learned that mental health issues transcend borders and cultures, becoming an international concern,” Al Said says. "There is no country untouched by the taboos associated with mental health, which are often rooted in deeply personal issues.”

Globally, Al Said continues, the perspective on mental health is evolving into a widely discussed topic, attracting dialogue even from those previously uninformed about the subject. "The universality of mental health challenges calls for a reevaluation of our questions and assumptions, emphasizing that this is not an isolated regional issue but a shared global battle,” she concludes.

IN THE WORLD WHERE CONSUMER

CULTURE has reached an unprecedented zenith, it might seem counterproductive to foster consumer awareness about the implications of their choices. But according to Olga Jeffers, founder of VintageDream, an e-commerce platform for vintage jewelry and clothing, this is the only way for the world to go now. "The ethos of conscious consumption, which I advocate, is about pausing to consider the broader impact of our buying habits,” Leffers says. "It's about recognizing that what we purchase, and how we use it, can either contribute to the problem, or be part of a much-needed solution.”

TODAY, LEFFERS’ COLLECTION CONSISTS of more than 10,000 pieces from the most famous fashion houses: Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel, Dior, Oscar De La Renta, Nina Ricci, Miriam Haskell, and others. Leffers believes that in embracing the stories and history inherent in vintage pieces, people will start to acknowledge the role of preservation in contemporary fashion. "The essence of my #VintageMatters approach is to encourage people to recognize that their choices have power,” she declares. “Power to reduce waste, to preserve history, and to make ethical and sustainable fashion choices that reverberate through our society.”

THIS PHILOSOPHY OF FASHION IS EMBEDDED ALSO in her recently launched clothing brand, Leffers. "I envision Leffers not just as a brand, but as a legacy- creating garments that hold their value and significance well into the future, ultimately becoming cherished heirlooms in someone's wardrobe,” Leffers says. "It's about striking a balance between timeless design and modern responsibility, ensuring that every item we produce today is crafted with the potential to be loved and valued for decades to come."

KATRINA MANKANI

MANAGING DIRECTOR AND DIRECTOR OF POSITIVE EDUCATION AT FORTES EDUCATION

KATRINA MANKANI IS AN ACCOMPLISHED LEADER in the UAE’s educational sector- she is the Managing Director and Director of Positive Education at Fortes Education, a Dubai-based K-12 and pre-school operator. Within Fortes Education, Mankani is also the Managing Director of its pre-school chain, Jumeirah International Nurseries (JINS), and a leader of the Positive Education initiative at one of its schools (Sunmarke School and Regent International School). Each of these roles showcases her commitment to integrating innovative teaching practices with the principles of positive psychology, with an aim to cultivate environments where students thrive academically and emotionally.

FOR ALL OF MANKANI’S PROWESS IN THE UAE’S education scene today, it’s interesting to learn that she arrived in Dubai more than 16 years ago to launch her own real estate brokerage. So, what inspired her shift to education? “It wasn’t something I plotted out meticulously,” Mankani replies. “Rather, it was a path that found me, ignited by a desire to leave a meaningful imprint on the world. My guiding light in this journey was my mother-in-law, Shakuntala Mankani, a pioneer in Dubai's education scene since the late '70s. Her steadfast belief in education's power to transform lives has touched not only her family, but also thousands of students across Fortes Education nurseries and schools. True to the Mankani family ethos, where merit and hard work reign supreme, my educational voyage commenced from the ground up."

THIS PHILOSOPHY HAS GOVERNED MANKANI’S WORK AT JINS TOO. After all, despite her credentials, which include a master's in public administration from Moscow State University and a master's in education in private school leadership from

Columbia University, Mankani’s induction into JINS in 2009 was as a humble teaching assistant. "From there, my path meandered through roles as a teacher, nursery manager, and, by 2015, to my current role as Managing Director,” she says, and then adds with a laugh, "Along this path, I notched up a quirky achievement- changing 28 nappies in just five hours!”

AS FOR MANKANI’S FORAY INTO POSITIVE EDUCATION (which Fortes Education defines as “teaching that develops skills not only for academics, but also for personal wellbeing and character development”), it all started from realizing that learning should also be focused on developing personal features like gratitude and generosity, and much more. Imagine a school where the curriculum is as concerned with teaching kindness as it is algebra, so children grow up knowing how to count, and also how to count on each other” she explains. "Positive education isn't just an educational philosophy; it's a revolution we're leading at Fortes Education. Think of it as educating the head, heart, and hands.” But what is the long-term goal when it comes to positive education? "Our goal is to create a world where every child has access to an education that balances academic achievement with emotional well-being and character development,” Mankani says. "This vision encompasses not only the expansion of our own institutions, but also influencing educational practice worldwide.”

INSIDER INSIGHTS

Katrina Mankani shares three practical strategies for achieving success

} Flexibility is your ally "Life's most significant opportunities often come disguised as detours. Embracing flexibility has allowed me to navigate from real estate to the realm of education, demonstrating that the path to success is rarely linear, but always enlightening."

} Resilience is your foundation "The journey of an entrepreneur is paved with challenges. Like a ship navigating turbulent seas, resilience has been my anchor, ensuring that no storm could deter my course."

“LIFE’S MOST SIGNIFICANT OPPORTUNITIES OFTEN COME DISGUISED AS DETOURS.”

} Seek purpose beyond profit "The most fulfilling ventures are those driven by a desire to make a meaningful difference. This principle has been my north star, guiding my everyday decisions. Let your mission guide your entrepreneurial journey, and success will follow."

NOBODY TOLD ME THAT FEMALE LEADERSHIP IS DIFFERENT THAN MALE LEADERSHIP.”

AS A PIONEER IN EPIGENETICS AND REGENERATIVE THERAPIES in the Arab region, whose efforts have been recognized with over 35 prestigious scientific and leadership awards,H.E. Dr. Maryam Mohamed Fatma Matar actively champions gender equality and women’s leadership in science and technology in the UAE. That said, she is also quick to point out that women who build their careers in the UAE

face fewer obstacles than in other parts of the world- note here that Dr. Matar was the first woman to hold a high-level senior position in a government institution when, in 2008, she was appointed as the Director General of the Community Development Authority in Dubai. "I’ve always been looked after, especially by our leaders," Dr. Matar says.

DR. MATAR ADMITS THAT THERE WAS A TIME when not everyone in the UAE

was ready to accept that women had started taking higher career positions; however, as soon as they saw the support that these women got from the country’s leadership, they followed suit. Dr. Matar reconfirms this by sharing an interesting story about her meetings with H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. "Every Tuesday, all Director Generals would have lunch with His Highness, and I would be the only one in a black abaya,” she says. "Once, I was late, because I had some prior commitments, and I had asked the protocol about it, but they insisted that I come, saying that my absence would be too obvious. Once I finally managed to come to that meeting, His Highness was already in the majilis, and I was so ashamed that I came after him. But when he saw me at the entrance of the majilis, he stood up, and other attendees of the meeting did the same. I started running those 15 meters from the entrance to him, apologizing, and requesting him to sit down. I told him that it was the first time that everyone stood up for me, and then he said, that from then on, they would all always stand up for me. From that moment, even when H.H. was not there, my colleagues would stand up for me. It shows how kind and supportive our male colleagues in the UAE are.”

TODAY, DR. MATAR PLAYS A PIVOTAL ROLE IN DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE HEALTHCARE models for the MENA region, not only as the founder and Chairperson of the UAE Genetic Diseases Association, but also as the founder of the Sheikh Zayed Genetics

Research Centre. She has been instrumental in driving scientific discussions and community engagement in the fields of epigenetics and regenerative therapies. Her “Reprogram Your Genes” awareness program, adopted by over 200 academic institutions and 150 organizations, engages a wide audience from students to professionals, encouraging them to embrace healthier lifestyles. Achieving this level of success in her career also required developing good leadership skills about which Dr. Matar has some unique insights. "Nobody told me that female leadership is different than male leadership,” she says. "The only two decisions I regret are the two decisions that I took on the first day of my period. It was only then that I came to truly understand the importance of learning about my own psychology, physiology, and biology, and how women are different during those few days in a month. I did not know that it would affect my decisionmaking so much. Since then, I have come up with a different approach to managing my organization- whenever I have to make a decision during the days of my period, I make it through my team.”

BEFORE WE PART WAYS, DR. MATAR

SHARES ONE MORE ANECDOTE FROM HER CAREER that shows how she was able to thrive and succeed in in a male-dominated environment- this story takes us back to 2006 when she was named an Undersecretary in the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention. "I was only 29 years old, and I remember that I had only male colleagues at the Ministry, who were all senior to me age- and experiencewise,” she says. "My husband helped me a lot, because he advised me to treat them as I would treat my father. Would I be the first one or the last one to talk when discussing any issue with my father? I answered that, for sure, I’d be the last one to talk. So, he said, let them start too, show your respect. From that moment, instead of rivalry, they started waiting to hear my opinion in the end, and they would more often than not agree with it. So, all that it took was to show respect to the elderly, and to them as men."

shares her advice for women in the workplace

Be proud to be female “You need to understand how unique we are as females. We as women are empowered with biological strengths that men do not have. Look after your beauty, be feminine, don’t raise your voice."

Look after the beauty of your brain "We know that females have two X chromosomes, which, according to clinical studies, contain the gene that is responsible for social intelligence, mathematics, decision-making smartness, and much more. So, if one is not working, we have the other X chromosome- but in any case, do invest in your education."

LECTERA

A PARTNER OF THE WE CONVENTION, LECTERA IS AN EDTECH PLATFORM WHOSE COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUM -WITH OFFERINGS IN 15 LANGUAGES- SERVES MORE THAN THREE MILLION PEOPLE FROM 65 COUNTRIES. LECTERA.COM

What are the advantages of Lectera when compared to other similar edtech solutions?

Perhaps the most important advantage we have to this day remains the fast education methodology, developed by the founder of the platform, Mila Smart Semeshkina, which is the basis of all our educational products. An international team of highly professional individuals, including very strong methodologists and IT engineers, works on their creation.

In addition, we invest significant resources in the localization of educational products, as we have 3.5 million learners from 65 countries around the world. Machine translation with neural networks is improving every year but is still not good enough for those who want to learn and master professional skills in their native

language. Moreover, our users have the opportunity at any time to take a test and receive optimal recommendations for their further education and development, and we see how this testing truly helps people make accurate decisions.

What makes Lectera’s offering so appealing to users?

We offer a quality product to each user, they receive it and give their feedback— most often distinctly positive, as evidenced by reviews on trustpilot.com, for example. This tells us that our continuous work on the quality of our educational products is yielding results. Our users regularly receive up-to-date information about our new products and market trends, participate in webinars, and joint partnership programs that we launch. We focus on high-quality educational products and a thoughtful methodology, continuously updating our course catalog, and working with new educational formats that meet the challenges of the times. We aim to satisfy the needs of each

individual user, considering their unique requirements, and to anticipate the type of education they need for a successful future.

How do we encourage more people to see the potential of edtech?

The Lectera team continuously promotes the potential of edtech, the necessity of lifelong learning, and the tools that facilitate integrating continuous education into everyday routines. On our platform, lectera.com/magazine, we regularly publish articles on these topics to educate and

inform a wider audience.

Furthermore, Mila Smart Semeshkina, the founder of Lectera, plays a significant role in advocating for edtech through her public and journalistic activities. Particularly, as an invited speaker at prestigious international forums, she consistently draws attention to this important subject.

By showcasing real-world examples, success stories, and the transformative impact of edtech, we aim to inspire and encourage more people to see its potential. Mila Smeshkina, through her speaking

"I would say that in the beginning of your journey it’s ok if you don’t know exactly who you are, as figuring that out is a part of the journey. You still can get successful without knowing yourself enough. But for staying successful and not disappearing again, you need to know who you are.

Beside that, consistency is key. No matter what, you are not allowed to give up. You must know what you want, you have to remind yourself of your goals, and if you don’t do that, your soul will do so. Because if what you‘re doing is your real truthful purpose, then there is no way of giving it up. No matter what.

And last but not least, putting yourself out there, and creating a big network, is always something which helps you to support others, and to get support for yourself."

MILA SMART SEMESHKINA

FOUNDER, WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT (WE) COUNCIL AND WE CONVENTION

MILA SMART SEMESHKINA WAS INSPIRED TO ESTABLISH the Women's Empowerment (WE) Council and organize the WE Convention conference upon recognizing the significant lack of platforms specifically dedicated to female leaders, where they could convene, grow collectively, and inspire each other. "My vision was to create a place where women leaders could mentor and guide others, showcasing how to achieve goals with motivation and by being role models,” she says. "The concept was to establish an environment where women, acknowledged for their strength, power, and self-sufficiency, could channel their abundant energy productively. Essentially, the WE Council is a beacon for women acting as lighthouses, and for those seeking guidance to navigate their lives.”

BASED OUT OF DUBAI, THE WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT Council has today grown into a community of 30,000 women from around the world. Its flagship event, the WE Convention, featured a stellar lineup of 65 speakers in 2023, which included notable names like model, author, and dietician Maye Musk, Wildberries founder and CEO Tatyana Bakalchuk, and Build an Empire CEO Elena Cardone. In 2024, the two-day WE Convention is set to feature more than 100 speakers, including Maria Sharapova (world-class tennis champion, investor and entrepreneur), Carla Bruni (singer, supermodel and the former first lady of France), Karen Wazen (digital entrepreneur), Meryem Uzerli (actress), and many more.

BUT THE STELLAR LINEUP OF SPEAKERS IS NOT THE ONLY STRENGTH OF THE CONFERENCE- its uniqueness is in the content that the many extraordinarily successful women will share with attendees. "At our events, successful women share their 'recipes' for success- detailing the specific actions they took, the challenges they overcame, and the pathways they followed,” Semeshkina says. "These narratives are akin to recipes in cooking; each includes a set of ingredients (actions and strategies), mixed and prepared in a unique way. The same principle applies to career and business success: the foundational elements are similar, but the final outcome is uniquely flavored by each individual's journey.”

Our aim is for

attendees to leave with tangible success stories, whether it's doubling their income, expanding their business, or advancing in their careers. We seek measurable and practical outcomes that result directly from the strategies discussed at the WE Convention. “ ”

Another strength of the WE Convention, Semeshkina continues, is an atmosphere of camaraderie and support. “It is a stark contrast to the often-perceived notion that women in success-driven environments compete and undermine each other,” she explains. "Instead, when brought together with a shared vision of success and a common worldview, an incredible atmosphere of positive and constructive networking emerges. Women help and uplift each other, creating an environment of mutual support and collaboration.”

FOR THE 2024 EDITION OF THE WE CONVENTION,

Semeshkina has chosen a topic that is often shrouded in hesitation, yet crucial for empowerment: money. "The discourse usually revolves around self-development and spiritual growth, which are vital; however, there's an urgent need to address the practical aspects of financial empowerment and career success,” she says. "It’s about time we openly discuss why earning money, achieving career milestones, and having the autonomy to make choices matter significantly.” This year’s event will therefore delve into success strategies, discussing the importance of financial independence and career advancement, and offering insights into stabilizing and growing businesses. "Our aim is for attendees to leave with tangible success stories, whether it's doubling their income, expanding their business, or advancing in their careers,” Semeshkina says. “We seek measurable and practical outcomes that result directly from the strategies discussed at the WE Convention. To facilitate this, we’re not just hosting inspiring speakers on the main stage, but also organizing hands-on workshops.”

AS FOR HER PLANS FOR THE FUTURE, Semeshkina aims for the WE Convention to become more widely recognized, attracting a larger number of women who aspire to be part of the WE Council community. "Specifically, our goal is to significantly increase participation in our annual conference,” she says. “Instead of hosting 2,000 attendees, we're aiming for 5,000, solidifying our position as the world’s premier forum for women leaders. By scaling up, we not only expand our reach, but also enhance our impact. As we become more prominent, we attract more influential speakers and thought leaders. This, in turn, enriches the experience for our attendees, offering them exposure to a wider range of ideas, experiences, and insights shared by our role models and speakers. The increased visibility and the quality of discourse at our events will empower more women to embrace and act on the messages, strategies, and ideas presented."

THERE IS A LOT ONE CAN LEARN ABOUT BUILDING BUSINESSES

from Emirati serial entrepreneur, public speaker, and reality TV star Sara Al Madani- after all, she started up her first venture at the age of 15. And according to her, there is one particular lesson that other entrepreneurs often find hard to learn, or even accept and admit to themselves- and that is to not let themselves, as founders, be be held hostage by their ideas and ambitions of the past. This, as it so happens, is the philosophy that governs the current stage of Al Madani’s own entrepreneurial journey.

"At the moment, my business direction has changed,” Al Madani says. "I’ve been on a self-discovery journey where I found my purpose, and I did a lot of healing work. I realized that many of my businesses are things I'm not passionate about, and don't align with my purpose. I had to restructure them to align with my purpose, which was the biggest change in the past three years. The most rewarding part is the growth, bringing an idea to life, learning, building, making something happen, and creating. The most difficult aspect is dealing with failure, learning, bouncing back, and curveballs. But if you're passionate, these challenges are just bumps in the road.”

It is therefore Al Madani’s belief that entrepreneurs should let their ideas evolve, and this is one of the points she often raises during her

many public speaking engagements. Indeed, Al Madani has delivered over 200 keynote speeches, during which she’s known to open up about her personal development, and, in the process, break many stereotypes about Emirati women as well. "As a public speaker, being Arab and Emirati, and outspoken, I face negativity and backlash for breaking cultural barriers,” she says. "I don't deal with negative comments, because I see them as projections of others' internal issues. I focus on gratitude and internal peace, which shields me from negativity.”

I don't deal with negative comments because I see them as projections of others' internal issues. I focus on gratitude and internal peace, which shields me from negativity “ ”

Al Madani’s penchant for setting herself apart can also be seen in her participation as one of the six women featured in The Real Housewives of Dubai, the regional version of the reality television (TV) series originally created by American network, Bravo. "The reality TV show came into my life unexpectedly, and while it is time-consuming and mentally taxing, it's rewarding and enjoyable,” she says. "It’s a platform to share my voice globally, fix misconceptions about Middle Eastern women, and promote my mission.”

Now, while the second season of The Real Housewives of Dubai is set to launch later this year, Al Madani has been busy with the first part of 2024 launching two new businesses: education platform for

personal development The Others, and health and beauty brand Ficks. So, with all of what she has on her plate, one has to wonder: does she have room for any new plans? "I don't plan much anymore, I live in the now,” she replies. "I set goals, but it's okay if I don't meet them." This statement by Al Madani offers a peek into how she perceives success today, and it’s an ethos that she includes in her advice for all the entrepreneurs out there today. "Firstly, define success on your terms," Al Madani says. "My daily success is measured by what I do for myself, and then for others. Secondly, just start. Your journey is unique, so take the risk; it's rewarding. There's no perfect time, so make the time right."

declares Dr. Giovanna Graziosi Casimiro, a Web3 strategist with a Ph.D in extended reality (XR) technologies, who is also the Head of Metaverse Fashion Week, a role she started while working at 3D

virtual world browser-based platform

Decentraland. "For me, a typical day is handson, dealing with client and brand crises, and finding unexpected solutions for last-minute challenges.” And given her specialization in XR solutions, virtual worlds, and physical computing, Dr. Graziosi Casimiro is uniquely positioned to lead the Metaverse Fashion Week, which annually takes place across multiple metaverses, housing virtual storefronts of numerous global brands.

Dr. Graziosi Casimiro’s involvement with Web3 traces back to 2017 when she began exploring the crypto anarchy movement and opensource culture, and it was in 2021 that she formally entered the Web3 realm as Head of Events at Decentraland, subsequently assuming the role of Head of Metaverse

} Put effort into both diligence and efficiency

"Devote time to study and broaden your knowledge. Challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone, and explore new territories beyond what you already know."

} Embrace critical thinking

"Resist jumping on trends simply because they're popular. Instead, challenge the status quo, and lead the way by questioning everything, and pioneering new ideas."

} Web3 revolves around people “Web3 is not just about tools, which are bound to evolve and become obsolete over time. Therefore, prioritize collaborative efforts, community engagement, and collective project development. Establish a robust and reliable network of talented individuals to collaborate with."

Fashion Week. Since 2022, she has also been a faculty member at the Paris-based higher educational institution Institut Français de la Mode, where she teaches courses on innovation and immersive technologies.

DR. GRAZIOSI CASIMIRO THEREFORE SEEMS the right person to ask how embracing bold choices leads to innovative breakthroughs, and she replies by pointing out that humility is essential in her line of work. “In an innovative space, you must be prepared for a volatile environment, where ideas are constantly revisited,” she says. "Discourses like 'I've been doing this for 20 years' may not always be effective. It's not about the length of your experience, but your ability to change, adapt, and collaborate. Moreover, in the Web3 space, new ideas require patience, and not everything should revolve around money. Good ideas flourish before capital, and eventually, they become self-sustainable.”

RESIST JUMPING ON TRENDS SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY’RE POPULAR. INSTEAD, CHALLENGE THE STATUS QUO, AND LEAD THE WAY BY QUESTIONING EVERYTHING, AND PIONEERING NEW IDEAS.

SUCH A PARADIGM WOULD ALSO EXPLAIN THE ETHOS that governs Dr. Graziosi Casimiro in her career. "There's still so much more I aspire to contribute to this community, and I hope to leave a lasting legacy beyond my time, resonating with future generations,” she says. "My personal motivation extends beyond the confines of this universe's physics and theories. As a passionate

fan of science fiction and theories like the multiverse and string theory, I've always been intrigued by the possibilities they suggest for transcending the limitations of our reality. Additionally, I've been fascinated by the intersection of technology and the human body, contemplating how our definition of humanity will evolve in this era and beyond.

ELINA LANDMAN

COGNITIVE PSYCHOTHERAPIST AND EXECUTIVE COACH

THE RICH CAREER OF ELINA LANDMAN, a cognitive psychotherapist and executive coach, has given her a unique insight into the barriers that prevent women from reaching leadership positions. With degrees from a number of notable institutions, including the Institute of Gestalt Therapy and Counseling, the Eastern European Institute of Psychoanalysis and International Business Coaching University, and the Albert Ellis Institute in the USA, she has dedicated her career to helping women overcome several career-related limitations. According to her, women are naturally self-demanding, and they set high expectations for themselves, which "affects their growth in leadership positions.” At the same time, Landman continues, women often suffer from having a fixed mindset. "The bottom line of negative beliefs is to distinguish between two key concepts- a fixed mindset, and a growth mindset,” she explains. "While a fixed mindset reinforces our limitations, a growth mindset gives us a chance and faith in ourselves. Research has proven that a growth mindset drives progress. We can outgrow and overcome our limiting beliefs if we reframe them, and stop seeing them as extremes.”

SO, WHAT STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH would Landman advise women to take in order to change their fixed mindsets? "Determine which group the limiting belief that you have belongs to,” she replies. "According to the author Robert Dilts' classification, limiting beliefs can be divided into three broad categories based on the feelings that a person hashopelessness, helplessness, and underserving.” Once they do this, Landman says that women should work on constructing a new value system for themselves. "I always say that, if we know what failure and disappointment are, then we can have a different experience by noticing where we were satisfied with

ourselves. Such stories are difficult to remember, but everyone has them, and they are priceless for working on changes.” Finally, as the last step, women should make it a

point

to confront negative

beliefs

about themselves. “For

example, if a person has difficulty realizing and accepting their abilities, in their success

stories, we will definitely find evidence that they indeed possess these abilities." In this way, Landman concludes, the person can demonstrate these abilities, and then react better in future similar situations, leading to a positive outcome.

Elina Landman offers tips for maximizing one’s productivity

} Stop writing your plans; start planning your time "These four points will help you move from internal chaos to clear actions- things that need to be done first, plans that need to be completed without hesitation, what you cannot do, and what you can delegate.”

} Keep a list every day for two weeks where you answer two questions “The first question is about one action that you will stop doing today, because it interferes with your time management. The second question is about one action that you will immediately start doing, because it helps you manage your planning and feel calm."

} Check yourself and your actions once a week “Check yourself by using these five criteria- what gave you strength and energy, what aroused your interest, what inspired you, what important meaning you demonstrate, and what actions you performed at the limit of your abilities and talent."

“THE BOTTOM LINE OF NEGATIVE BELIEFS IS TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN TWO KEY CONCEPTS - A FIXED MINDSET, AND A GROWTH MINDSET. WHILE A FIXED MINDSET REINFORCES OUR LIMITATIONS, A GROWTH MINDSET GIVES US A CHANCE AND FAITH IN OURSELVES.”

MISHAAL ASHEMIMRY

VICE PRESIDENT FOR DIVERSITY INITIATIVES AT THE INTERNATIONAL ASTRONAUTICAL FEDERATION, AND FOUNDER, MISHAAL AEROSPACE

WHILE MISHAAL ASHEMIMRY

CURRENTLY serves as the Vice President for Diversity Initiatives at the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), the Paris-based international space advocacy organization, and as a special advisor to the CEO of the Saudi Space Agency, she is also an entrepreneur, having founded Mishaal Aerospace in 2010 to pursue her ultimate dream of building rockets. Now, looking at how her career trajectory has led her to where she is today, it is quite understandable why her advice for aspiring female scientists starts with her saying, "The view from here [the top] is pretty amazing! So, don't let anyone clip your wings. The sky, as they say, isn't the limit– it's just the beginning!”

ASHEMIMRY IS TODAY PERHAPS best known as the first female aerospace engineer in the GCC, but she is also an entrepreneur, commercial pilot, speaker and influencer. But when she was starting in this field years ago, she remembers chasing rockets as not exactly being the most conventional path for a young girl in the Gulf region. "There were definitely many hurdles [at the beginning],” she says. "The first one was the fact that

aerospace engineering wasn’t available in Saudi Arabia at the time. Consequently, I had to start my journey early from middle school and high school to prepare to get into aerospace engineering. Hence, I lived in the US most of my life away from my mom. This was tough, but necessary to get to where I am today." Ashemimry thus went on to earn a master's of science degree in aerospace engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology in the US, as well as two bachelor's of science degrees -in aerospace engineering and in applied mathematics- from the same institution. "During my master’s degree, I was fortunate to get funding for nuclear thermal rocket research from the US’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Marshall Space Flight Center, which was and still is my favorite engineering effort,” she recalls. "I was very eager to continue the next level of this research into a doctor of philosophy degree, but unfortunately, NASA’s budget for space nuclear research got cut, so I could not continue this research into another degree.”

} Be passionate about your field "Pick careers you are passionate about, because if you have a passion for something, no matter how hard it gets, and trust me, it will get hard, one’s passion will be the driver to continue."

} Be comfortable with discomfort "I recommend learning as much as you can about your chosen field through formal education, individual research, and knowledge acquisition by all means. Next comes experience through working in one’s field, and putting oneself in uncomfortable and challenging situations. Then, teach what you know, because it will enable you to explain complex concepts to others that may not understand it, pushing your creativity.”

} Be committed to success (regardless of setbacks) "Welcome failure, as one learns more from failure than from success. I always say, 'Failure is the seed from which success grows.’"

Department at American multinational aerospace and defense conglomerate Raytheon, where she contributed to 22 different rocket programs. However, the aerospace job market started slowing down in 2010, and companies started laying off rather than hiring. "I left Raytheon, and then, it was difficult to find other jobs in the market,” Ashemimry remembers. "As a result, I was faced with either moping around and waiting for a job opening at some aerospace company, or starting up my own. I was faced with either leading or following- I chose leading.” Starting her rocket company, Mishaal Aerospace, Ashemimry was confronted with two types of difficulties- technical and fundingrelated. "Every technical setback became a stepping stone,” she says. “It taught me resilience, the importance of collaboration (because let's face it, rockets are a team effort!), and the power of creative problem-solving,” she says. "When it comes to funding, searching for investors took me two and half years, because aerospace is not an easy field to attract investors (it is too risky for the average type of investor), while those that appreciate it had already invested in other rocket companies.” However, despite such problems, Ashemimry has never regretted going down the entrepreneurial route. “In starting your own business, you become in control of your achievements, regardless of society’s reservations or whatnot,” she declares. "However, as female business owners, we do get recognized by the community once one achieves a particular goal, and we get to be in the spotlight faster.”

AS MUCH AS HER ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY IS trailblazing for young girls in the Arab world who are interested in the realm of science, Ashemimry's work for international organizations is equally dedicated to inspiring change for the better- for instance, through her work at the IAF, she is actively contributing to increasing gender, geography, and generational diversity in the space sector. "In an effort to do this, we have created a committee called the Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Administrative Committee (IDEA), focused on developing initiatives and programs to facilitate and encourage diversity in the sector,” she says. "One such initiative is the diversity checklist, which will be shared with all member organizations at the IAF that is meant to establish each organization’s baseline statistics for different categories, and invites them to commit to key performance indicators for their diversity for the next three years. These and many other programs, like the 3G (gender, geography, and generational) Diversity Awards, are intended to encourage and recognize organizations to do more for diversity."

EMON SHAKOOR

FOUNDER AND CEO, BLOSSOM ACCELERATOR

FOR EMON SHAKOOR, FOUNDER AND CEO OF BLOSSOM ACCELERATOR

Saudi Arabia's first tech-inclusion accelerator and ecosystem builder, the most rewarding aspect of entrepreneurship is that one is no longer waiting for change to come. “You create that change every day,” she says. “It is also about being able to actually execute on a vision you’ve been working on, and then seeing it serve thousands of people and positively changing their lives.”

Taking matters into her own hands seems to be a personal feature of

Shakoor. Having grown up suffering from epilepsy and daily seizures motivated her to study the brain, which then led to her becoming a neuroscience researcher who worked in clinical drug trials. She was in California, US, while undergoing this personal transformation, when it brought about a new opportunity that she was keen to seize. "The Bay Area was flooded with innovation, and everyone around me was coding together their next startup, and raising from venture capitalists,” Shakoor recalls. "So, it wasn’t long before I decided to also start a company out of California, and take advantage of my scientific background to test and either confirm or deny the thesis or problem statement behind the company itself. It is in that experience of starting my first company and navigating the startup ecosystem in California that I decided to move back to Saudi Arabia, and build a startup ecosystem back home that was later coined Blossom Accelerator.”

BLOSSOM ACCELERATOR SPECIALIZES

IN EXECUTING and operating all kinds of entrepreneurship and innovation programs to enable companies to start, scale, and succeed; today, its alumni includes more than 3,000 startups across five countries. Plus, it was thanks to the work that Shakoor did in helping Blossom Accelerator founders raise funds that she was inspired to also join the ranks of startup investors. "As an angel investor, I invest in around five early stage companies per year, and I work with them closely as an advisor in sectors I believe I can add value to,” she says, while adding that she also serves on the opportunity committee at Oqal, Saudi Arabia's largest angel investment group. Shakoor is also a venture partner at Oryx Fund, a London-based US$50 million fund dedicated to investing in early stage companies across the MENA region. "We primarily invest in five verticals, edtech, healthtech, fintech, logistics, as well as B2B enterprise software solutions, and we are actively looking for companies in our target verticals at the pre-seed and seed stages, as we continue to build our portfolio,” Shakoor says.

The greatest project you’ll ever work on is yourself. If you are constantly the best version of yourself, you’ll bring thought leadership and creativity to everything that you do.

NOW, FOR ALL THE ACHIEVEMENTS SHAKOOR HAS HAD through the course of her entrepreneurial trajectory, she is also emphatic about telling those wanting to follow her lead to be prepared for what is almost certainly going to be a long, daunting, and lonely journey. "There are constantly new obstacles that no one can prepare you for, and it is 100% the responsibility of the CEO to constantly mitigate challenges, risks, and ensure sustainability and continuity,” she concludes. “And that is no easy feat.”

} Be confident and dream big "Don’t play small. Push yourself to accomplish and achieve the highest measures of success, and stay extremely focused on that mission until it is achieved. You can only do it if you believe in yourself.”

} Have a very clear goal “It should be an ambitious three- to five-year goal, and you should always be reflecting back on it, and amending it. The greatest project you’ll ever work on is yourself. If you are constantly the best version of yourself, you’ll bring thought leadership and creativity to everything that you do.”

} Stay authentic to yourself, always "Don’t allow the world to tell you who you should be, or what you should do. You already know- you just need to follow your curiosity and gut. And in the process, only surround yourself with people and friends who genuinely care about your success and growth."

TODAY, KHAN IS THE FOUNDER OF CASA DA LOUISA (CDL) GROUP, an education group operates across the entire spectrum of educational solutions, from brick-and-mortar early education centers to cutting-edge educational technology and strategic educational initiatives. “It is named in honor of my grandmother, Louisa, and it embodies the resilience she instilled in me to overcome personal challenges,” Khan says. "Our footprint spans 25 countries, where we have made a profound impact on over a million children, teachers, communities, and individuals with our innovative solutions. From pioneering the first artificial intelligence-powered literacy centers in Kenya, Liberia, Ghana, India, and Nigeria, to developing affordable laptop solutions for teachers across East Africa, CDL has consistently pushed the boundaries of educational innovation.”

WHEN ASKED FOR HER INSIGHTS ABOUT BEING A FEMALE ENTREPRENEUR, Khan replies by saying that her perspective not only

on entrepreneurship, but on life in general, changed just about a year ago when she became a mother. "Motherhood has reignited my appreciation for the unique strengths we, as women, possess: the ability to juggle multiple tasks, to empathize deeply with others, and to endure both physical and emotional challenges with unwavering resilience,” she declares. "In today's rapidly evolving world, where technology often replaces technical skills and the demand for soft skills grows, these abilities are invaluable.” Here, Khan admits that balancing the demands of work with the needs of a child can evoke a constant sense of guilt and pressure to prove oneself both as a competent mother and a successful professional; yet, she also highlights the positive side of things- for her, becoming a mother sparked new creativity and inspiration in her work. "It has strengthened my resolve to create a better future, not only for my child, but for all children,” she concludes.

Swimming Upstream in a Conversation with Sara Al MAdani

In today’s world, where self-reliance is highly valued, finding genuine support is exceptionally rare and valuable. True support isn’t about solving someone else’s problems or carrying their burdens. Instead, it lies in the art of understanding, inspiring, and empowering one another amidst life’s various challenges and successes. Many men attribute their achievements to the nuanced support from their wives, who provide presence, cover weaknesses, and amplify strengths. Veronica Berti Bocelli, Vice-Chair of the Andrea Bocelli Foundation, embodies this ideal of support. She will discuss empowering his success while maintaining her independence, career, and charitable works, all while staying a loved and admired woman.

Every individual has distinct qualities and the potential to fulfill their aspirations. Often, those who conform to societal norms are driven by a fear of judgment, relying on the approval of others. Conversely, individuals who challenge these norms remain unaffected by external influences, holding their own perspectives and embracing risks to pursue their goals. In this talk, Sarah Al Madani, a prominent Emirati businesswoman, reality TV star, public speaker, and the recipient of over 140 awards in various fields, who runs nine businesses, has 68 tattoos, and has been married and divorced twice, will share how she remains focused on achieving financial success and resilience, balancing her personal and professional life while staying authentic to herself and not letting external forces dictate her beliefs.

Success Knows No Years

Keynote 20:00-23:00 Gala Dinner, Armani Hotel

The Tao-Art of Effective Leadership

Stereotypes in the workplace often focus on gender, race, and culture, but age-related biases are just as prevalent. Young professionals are frequently seen as too inexperienced for leadership roles, while older individuals are often dismissed as overqualified or just ‘past it’. Yet, research presents a varied picture. MIT specialists found that launching a successful business is most optimal after age 40, despite the fact that about 40% of women start their entrepreneurial journeys before 20. What’s the key takeaway? There’s no ‘right’ time to chase your dreams. There is no universal sweet spot between the speed and ambition associated with youth and the experience and maturity that comes with age. The best time is simply when you choose to make a move. This panel addresses both internal and external age-related biases, explores the evolution of professional paths throughout adulthood, and champions the belief that age is just a number, not a determinant of success

Join business speaker, writer, and public figure Irina Khakamada for an insightful exploration into the essence of leadership. With this keynote, Irina will delve into how to discover and embrace your purpose, cultivate key personal leadership qualities, and harness your leadership skills to effectively navigate through challenges. She will discuss the importance of fostering self-belief, understanding the weight of responsibility, managing teamwork, and selecting successful paths in your career. Furthermore, Irina will unveil the secrets to sustaining lifelong leadership, adapting and thriving regardless of the circumstances.
