addicted and immersed “Obsessed, in the mountains since 1983, I have written my life story around snowboarding.
I have been all in from the beginning hiking resorts before they allowed snowboards at age 9, allnight drives to Jackson Hole in high school to score first tracks of the year, hiking all night to score a first descent at dawn. Becoming a pro snowboarder was not an optional career; there was no backup plan. Now 30 years after stepping on my first snowboard I feel blessed to have been given the opportunities I have. From riding some of the world’s wildest lines to the products I have helped create, it’s been an honour to be a part of snowboarding’s evolution. During this journey I have often focused on the performance of my equipment. How can we make this board better… rail an edge harder… weigh less without sacrificing durability? I founded Jones Snowboards in 2009 to find answers to these performance questions and make innovative backcountry snowboarding equipment that reflected this passion for technical progression. When it comes to snowboard pioneers it begins and ends with one man, and that man is the late Tom Sims. As the creator of modern day snowboarding Tom was absolutely at the forefront of the sport back in its formative days. His laid back Californian skater lifestyle helped create the freestyle movement that turned snowboarding into the global force that it is today. Without Tom, snowboarding would be a completely different animal. Tragically Tom Sims died in 2012 but his legacy will never be forgotten. It’s almost impossible following Tom Sims in a list of snowboard pioneers, but if anyone can Dave Lee can. As one of the most influential snowboarders of the 90s, Dave’s fluid style epitomised freestyle snowboarding of that era. His knowledge of snowboard design and construction gained through his early years in the factory at Mervin Manufacturing, combined with his experiences as a pro rider has given him a level of know how pretty much unequalled within the sport. When Dave set up his own brand in 2004 little was he to know how influential they would become. In 2010 as a low priced alternative to taking out adverts in magazines Signal created a monthly internet show called Every Third Thursday. The premise behind this was to come up with unique but fun ways to manufacture snowboards in their own factory. Seven years on and Every Third Thursday has become a massive hit that has spawned some of the most innovative snowboard manufacturing techniques seen in decades, and is proof that the pioneering spirit is still strong in snowboarding. 1977: Whilst Star Wars fever gripped the planet and Punk was changing the face of music, deep in the Vermont countryside snowboard pioneer Jake Burton Carpenter was hard at work. You’ve got the Olympics, you’ve got the X Games, but for any snowboarder worth their salt there is only one event that they all want to win. That event has taken place every year since 1985, it gets no global exposure, you won’t take home any cash and if you come first, you’ll win a trophy made of Duct Tape and an embroidered Jacket. But spend a couple of minutes looking at the list of previous winners and you’ll see a roll call of the greatest names ever to strap a snowboard to their feet. Tom Sims, Shaun Palmer, Craig Kelly, Ross Rebagliati, Terje Haakonsen, Rob Morrow, Temple Cummins, Xavier de la Rue, Seth Westcott, Karleen Jeffery, Barrett Christie, Victoria Jelouse and this year winners Maelle Ricker and Mathieu Crepel. So what is it that without fail, year on year, draws the world’s best snowboarders to an isolated mountain in Washington State that most tourists have never heard of? It is of course the Legendary Mount Baker Banked Slalom. Harking back to the pioneering days of the sport, this single run timed slalom down a banked gully is the ultimate test of a rider’s skill. Over the past few years we’ve seen the Baker Banked Slalom spawn a new generation of snowboard events following the same blueprint: The Dirksen Derby, Dick’s Ditch, The Rat Race and Sudden Rush in Laax. So what is it about Banked Slalom that seems to be generating so much interest? Well it’s simple really: It’s so much fun; It suits snowboarding perfectly; Anyone can do it. Now that growth in Banked Slalom has also had another dramatic effect on snowboarding. It’s also refocused riders back to the art of carving. Almost forgotten during the rail years, at long last the new generation of rider has discovered that there really is no feeling like nailing a carve on the piste. This new found passion for carving and banked slalom has also had a dramatic effect on snowboard manufacturers. For this season we’ve seen a rush to bring to the market a whole new generation of snowboard. These banked slalom focused boards blend fully directional pow inspired shapes with a deep sidecut and responsive flex to create a series of boards that deliver what can only be described as a truly mesmerising ride. Even the most committed freestyle rider comes back a changed person after just a single run on one of these boards. Harking back to the pioneering spirit of snowboarding, these freecarve/snowsurf boards are all about the experience of the ride. Over the past few seasons we’ve seen women’s snowboarding progress at a pace like never before. With a new generation of elite riders coming through, the sport has seen a level of progression both in the park and in the pipe that has been nothing short of incredible. Riders now go bigger, tricks are more technical and that gap between the top male riders and the top female riders has definitely narrowed. Oh it used to be so simple, if you were a kid you’d buy a cheap foam filled snowboard and ride that until you were big enough to get on an adult board. Things have changed though, whilst we were dropping powder faces in the backcountry those kids went and got really good at snowboarding. No longer do you think it’s cute when you see an 8 year old on the hill, what you do now is move out the way as they make you look like the geriatric old fart that you’ve all of a sudden morphed into.
