Even though early decimal dates are tough to find in premium grade, with 1966-74 coins particularly scarce, every coin in our sets is in Uncirculated condition. In addition, the selection before you includes sets NEVER issued by the RAM! No Mint Sets were issued in 1967 and 1968, but you can get BOTH at Downies!

From 1966 until 1983, virtually every RAM Mint Set was sold in acrylic open top wallets. After 1983, the sets featured coins sealed within archival quality bubble, so to avoid unwanted handling and exposure to the air. The 1966-83 Year Sets are not available in this form – except at Downies! Kept secure behind ‘see-both-sides’ protective bubble, thereby guaranteeing longterm preservation of the quality, this is the best way to collect Australia’s early decimal coinage.

After years of debate, the Pretoria Mint was authorised by proclamation in 1922. Previously a nunnery, and in later life a prison, the Pretoria Mint struck South Africa’s first sovereigns in 1923. As with all British Empire sovereigns at that time, each coin united the portrait of George V with the St George & the Dragon motif, along with an SA mintmark. The Pretoria Mint struck sovereigns each year thereafter, until the cataclysmic events sparked by the Great Depression saw production halted in 1932 – the year that Downies was founded!
