Toucan Tip of the day! Want to really know what’s going on at Comic-Con? The Comic-Con Events Guide (the one with Tarzan on the cover) is your complete guide to all things Comic-Con. Want to know where to your favorite guest is appearing? It’s in there (pp. 152-158). Concerned about the new Stroller Policy? It’s in there (p. 13). Do you love the works of Jules Verne, H.G. Wells? Have a desire to dress in Victorian era or in wild west style clothing with steam powered equipment? Then Steampunk is just what you are looking for. With strong influences from Vern’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Wells’ The Time Machine, along with the T.V. show The Wild Wild West, Steampunk melds the best qualities of several genera’s and fuses them with the whimsical inventive and exploration flavor of a neo-Victorian and Edwardian era to create amazing costumes and equipment. At Comic-Con, there are several steampunk related events and artists: Phil and Kaja Foglio, the team that brings the steampunk series Girl Genius, have a booth (Girl Genius, 1331); author Gail Carriger, of The Parasol Protectorate Series is participating in three panels, and Sunday there is a Steampunk costuming panel at 3:00 in Room 24ABC.

Kim Hutsell and his wife Linda, established the Starburner Galactic Courier Service in 2008. Starburner is holding their 4th annual awards for outstanding contributions to the Steampunk community. Nick Bauman started the Steampunk meet ups at Comic-Con in 2008, gathering close to 200 costumed adventurers for the first photo shoot. Each year the photo event has gotten larger, earning mention in the Guinness Book of Records in 2010. This year at Comic-Con, there will be a meet up on the North Steps of the Mezzine level, Saturday at 12 noon. This will include steampunk themed awards, a photo shoot, and rumors of a flash mob from the Steampunk group Mantecoza (known for their Steampunk podcasts). Stop by the Gaslight Gathering table on the Mezzanine level, check out the costumes and find out how you, too, can join in all the steam powered fun. In Southern California, there are several groups that promote Steampunk: the Gaslight Gathering,

Starburner Couriers, The League of STEAM (Supernatural and Troublesome Ectoplasmic Apparition Management), a.k.a. the “Steampunk Ghostbusters” and Chrononaut. These groups co-exist to support each other as a community. Chrononaut’s Erik and Ingrid Chamberlin are steampunk historians who have worked with the San Diego Automotive Museum in Balboa Park, to create a steampunk exhibit that highlights some of Starburners steampunk gadgets and art.

Above and left: Kim Hutsell shows off a costume tyipical of the Steampunk genre. It’s a “safe, fun hobby for all ages,” he says.
